FROM THE OFFICE OF THE Executive Director-Treasurer
GOD IS FAITHFUL.
One hundred forty-two years since the founding of WMU of Texas, God has continued to allow us to serve Texas through your generosity. This year was a banner year for local missions in this state. Because of your support, we exceeded the $3.5 million goal for the Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions and were able to fully respond to each of the 86 ministries requesting funding in 2022.
For example,
• the effort to rehabilitate housing for missionaries in residence in Fort Worth is complete and two families have moved into the duplex,
• two teams built the 12th home through the South Texas Home Build,
• the first Hispanic Families on Mission Conference was held in North Texas,
• Regional Training events were held in Lubbock, Longview, and Lewisville to equip and encourage missions discipleship leaders,
• Texas Christian Job Corps maintained 42 sites with 764 participants, 325 graduates and 51 professions of faith!
As we look toward the future, we are excited about the young adults God is calling out to serve in His name in this state. Our hope is to equip and support them for such a time as this. In 1908, Mary Hill Davis said “Serving this day and generation will either condemn or endow the generations yet to come. But we only serve acceptably when we give ourselves abundantly and unreservedly.” Strengthening our connection to the state Baptist Student Ministries (BSMs) and sharing the Embrace mentoring model for calling out the called will be priorities for us in the coming months.
Thank you for your support of the mission and ministries of WMU of Texas.
To God be the glory for the great things He has done!
With a grateful heart,
TAMIKO C. JONES Executive Director-Treasurer WMU of TexasOur Mission

The Power of Legacy
Approaching my final days as president of WMU of Texas, I’ve been reflecting on the journey that brought me to my election in 2019. What a great journey it has been!
HERITAGE: First, I am grateful for my WMU heritage that began before I was born. My mother, Cleota Lenert (a native Texan), was always involved in WMU as I grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Whether in church, association, or state, she loved serving the Lord through WMU. When I was little, I remember her loading several cars and taking the Young Women’s Auxiliary to Ridgecrest WMU Week in North Carolina each summer. Mother was always mentoring women and equipping many to use their spiritual gifts through WMU. Dad created the visuals mom used for her speaking or teaching responsibilities. I also helped from time to time!
EXPERIENCES: I tagged along with mom to her various WMU programs in the church and the association, especially during my Girls Auxiliary (GA) days. One highlight was attending the Florida WMU Annual Meetings. I was especially excited to attend the annual meeting when she was elected president of Florida WMU.
I loved being in Sunbeams, GA’s, Acteens®, Baptist Young Women, and the pilot of Campus Baptist Young Women during seminary. I felt very fortunate to be Southwestern Seminary’s first summer intern with national WMU.
What an eye-opening experience! Then, leading conferences at “Houseparty” and other WMU training opportunities around Texas opened many doors. Being a pastor’s wife, I was able to start, strengthen, and expand missions discipleship in each of the churches we served. I never felt the Lord calling me to be a missionary overseas, but I did sense His calling to train our churches in missions discipleship for all ages. I have been so honored to serve as president of WMU of Texas and a vice president of national WMU the past four years. Half of my tenure was during the pandemic (some have called me the “Pandemic President”) when we learned to stretch our creativity to carry on the work of WMU of Texas via Zoom.
RELATIONSHIPS: I wouldn’t take anything for the relationships I have formed through the years because of WMU. Friendships from a lifetime of serving together, meeting needs, and sharing the love of Christ with others. I lack the space to share the many ways WMU has transformed my life through six decades preparing “for such a time as this.” (Esther 4:14)
IMPACTING CULTURES THROUGH THE LOCAL CHURCH
The Vietnamese WMU in Texas gathered for a time of worship and fellowship during the month of September where 150 ladies from 19 Vietnamese churches across Texas were in attendance. The conference was a beautiful encounter of generations of this faithful WMU group in our state.
During the conference, a panel of second generation Vietnamese shared how the next generation is being impacted by their local church through missions discipleship. The panelists highlighted how they are serving the Lord in their local churches and communities.
Rebekah Nguyen, one of the panelists, told us of the lessons she learned that impacted her spiritual life and ministry. She explains that her Vietnamese church “has always emphasized the importance of a strong Bible based foundation and that everything is first rooted in God's Word. Growing up understanding this has helped me as I'm faced with challenges or when I need spiritual guidance to always lean on His Word.”
Growing up, Rebekah was part of a Girls in Action® group in her church. She also shared the importance of discipleship as “how I keep grounded and get checked on how I'm living life and my relationship with God.”
Rebekah has served as a youth leader in her church and for the past 13 years she has been an assistant director for Camp Fusion, sponsored by Texas Baptist’s Intercultural Ministry. Camp Fusion is a ministry supported by the Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions. Rebekah is also the secretary and vice committee chairperson for her local church, Vietnamese Baptist Church of Garland, where she plans special events and activities.
Rebekah is one of the young leaders that has been impacted by the investment of the local church, WMU, and the ministries supported by the Mary Hill Davis Offering. This investment is changing the life of our future Baptists leaders among the new generation.
Transforming Generations
THROUGH MISSIONS DISCIPLESHIP
WMU of Texas believes that missions discipleship is a life-long endeavor. Through the WMU curriculum, our goal is help churches teach preschoolers to senior adults how to live missionally every day of their life.
MISSIONS TRANSFORMED MY FAMILY
"Mission discipleship has transformed our family by equipping us, and helping us to be more aware of the need others have to hear the gospel of Christ. It also has given us the opportunity to fulfill the great commission as we work together as a family by serving the Lord by praying and giving to missions."
–Irma Ynostra (pictured)THE NEXT GENERATION OF MISSIONARIES
“Seeing the hearts of preschoolers change from focusing on themselves to focusing on helping others will begin to build the foundation for this next generation of missionaires. I expect some of our preschoolers to be missionaries throughout the world.” –Phyllis
BrowerMISSIONS DISCIPLESHIP CHANGED MY LIFE
“Girls In Action and Acteens transformed my life by giving me a chance at worshipping God alongside a tightly knit community, which was something I didn’t really have before I joined the age-level group at my church."
–Aileeen Gregorio MeijaBEING ON MISSION BEHIND BARS
"Jesus identified Himself as the source of freedom. Because God seeks to set prisoners free—not always from their physical prison, but certainly from their imprisonment by sin, ignorance, rebellion, and foolish choices Christian Job Corps in Kendall County is now providing life management classes, mentoring, and Bible study in the Kendall County jail system." –Chris

Transforming Families One Home at a Time
WOMEN'S BUILD PROJECT
Having a home is something powerful most take for granted. But for the Espericueta-Zuniga family, the transformation for their family was visible. Mario, Olga and their three children had been living in a small travel trailer. Antonio, 15, and twins Dianey and Vianey, 13, had all experienced stress from their cramped living space.
This past October, twenty-seven women volunteers traveled from across the state to build WMU’s 12th home in Penitas, Texas. The family joined the volunteers to help build their home. As Olga worked to decorate the rooms of her children, she shared, “My children are now happy and able to express themselves more because they have their own space. Thank you WMU of Texas.”
Since 2010, over 200 Women’s Build volunteers have offered hope, built relationships, and shared Jesus with families participating in the Buckner Family Hope Center. Each volunteer is a storyteller of God’s grace in their own life and how Jesus makes the difference. Thank you for supporting the Women’s Build Project through the Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions.

Mary's House
IMPACTING LIVES AT HOME AND ABROAD
Missionaries sent stateside have an interesting journey. While we would call it “coming home,” missionaries on the field, whose calling is to faraway places, probably feel more like they are visiting a strange new land.
How can WMU of Texas help those stateside assignments be more manageable?
We do what we do best by providing a warm and inviting home for those who are serving and ministering abroad and come to the United States every few years to minister here. While missionaries returning are certainly encouraged to use the time for rest and refreshment, the stress of finding a suitable place to temporarily plant a family can be a challenge.
Through a partnership with the World Missions Center (WMC) on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary, WMU of Texas has found a way to provide a beautiful temporary home for missionaries serving stateside.
In 2019, the late Dr. Brent Ray, Director of the WMC, approached WMU of Texas with a vision. Take the abandoned dwelling at the corner of Broaddus and Stanley on campus and let God use it. The most recent assignment for the vacant space had been home to the late E. Earl Ellis Research Library. Yet in 2019, the building stood empty, in disrepair, and in desperate need of a purpose.
Add four years, an abundance of gifted visionaries and workers, funds from the Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions, and generous contributions through an online gift registry from the WMU of Texas family across the state, and the project is complete. Both of the units in the duplex have been remodeled, having taken the structure down to the studs. The units are fully furnished with new
appliances, beautiful décor, wonderful closet space, and 106 household items from the gift registry.
Mary’s House, a gift from WMU of Texas and the Mary Hill Davis Offering, provides all the comforts we statesiders enjoy with the added bonus of being on a seminary campus housing lots of students who can be mentored and encouraged by real-live missionaries living among them.
What is intended to be a time for missionaries to refuel and recharge, also provides a great opportunity for these Missionaries-in-Residence to encourage and equip seminary students to be prepared for their missions calling.
A home may seem like an interesting place for lives to be changed. But isn’t family the place where God started changing lives? The opportunities for community, fellowship, discipleship, and encouragement can not only change lives heading back to the foreign field but can encourage and shape the journeys of students right here in our state.

Richard is an atheist. Due to his work and family, Richard has recently expressed an interest in Christianity. Earlier this year, he reached out to Eric Hernandez, Apologetics Lead and Millennial Specialist with Texas Baptists, asking if he could attend their conference. He promised he wouldn’t bother anyone, speak to anyone, and wouldn’t “be in the way.” He said he just wanted to listen and learn.
With over 300 in attendance, Richard listened, learned, and expressed how grateful he was to attend. During and after the conference, he made himself available to help where needed.
What is most exciting about this story is that it is just the beginning. Currently, Richard is still an atheist. Because of his interests, attendance, and invaluable help at the conferences this year, Richard has become a regular volunteer at these conferences. We are eager to see where God takes his story.
Because of gifts to the Mary Hill Davis Offering, Richard continues to hear the gospel.

Camp Fusion exists to lead students to faith in Christ, deepen the faith-journey of those who are already Christfollowers, and intentionally build young leaders, as it equips them to return to their churches and take on leadership roles.
2022 was a unique year as approximately two-thirds of the 246 attending were first time campers. Camp Fusion celebrates the cultural diversity of those attending.
Linda Howell, Texas Baptists Intercultural Ministries Specialist, shared her joy of being an adult sponsor for eight Texas Lisu Christian Church youth. After Camp Fusion, the Lisu church held a three-week Bible study and went over the plan of salvation and what it means to follow Jesus. Seven of the eight kids accepted Christ. The pastor said that Camp Fusion was the reason they were open to accepting Christ.

AFRICAN AMERICAN GO NOW MISSIONS
My experience in Canada was one of surrender and trust to God. I was walking into a situation not knowing anything about Canada and knowing very little about North African Middle Eastern peoples. I had to come as a learner, surrendering my intellect, my pride, my control, to just allow myself to trust God with whatever we were doing. This heart posture also naturally led me to be more consistent with my spiritual disciplines, and I saw how those two things directly correlated to each other. I couldn’t do any ministry well if I wasn’t spending time in the Word, in prayer, and in God’s presence. Throughout the summer, we moved around the Greater Toronto Area. During this time, we would do ethnographic mapping to see where North African Middle Eastern peoples were located. Most of the time, we didn’t really see results and it was disappointing, but I had to remember that we are in the business of planting seeds, not saving people. I believe with all the people we had conversations with over those five weeks in Canada, by God’s grace, we planted a lot of seeds and left the Greater Toronto Area better than we found it.

Ethan, a member of the cattle daywork crew I was helping, asked me if he could enter a team into the Ranch Rodeo at our church, Brushy Top Cowboy Church.
