WELCOME TO HARVEST SEASON! ¡BIENVENIDOS A LA TEMPORADA DE COSECHA!
I absolutely love the Fall and appreciate the description many use pertaining to a time to harvest crops that have been planted, watered, and fertilized during previous seasons. If we consider our disciple-making efforts from this perspective, it is now time to call out those who have been called by God and equip them for service. They are ready!
The mission of WMU of Texas is to empower God’s people to advance the gospel through missional discipleship. Our vision is to see every believer across every culture and community compelled to live missionally. As we continue to engage with you in local missions, to establish partnerships for missions, and to empower our congregations for worldwide missions, we hope this fall edition of the Bridge Magazine will equip you to reach those God has called you to disciple.
Inside the magazine, you will learn more about the efforts of our border ministry and ways you or your church can engage in missions with this vulnerable population. Our emphasis on mental health, through Project Help, continues to be a path for many to learn and to serve. Over 40 areas of Texas have chosen to offer encouragement and hope through the ministry of Christian Job Corps®. There are various opportunities for you to be equipped and to share the knowledge you have gained in a disciple-making relationship.

WMU’S LEGACY: PRAYING
When thinking about the legacy of WMU and its impact on missions, four items reflect our foundation: learn, pray, give, and serve.
Why is prayer so important in missions? Praying has been a part of our DNA from the beginning in 1880. Our sisters in Christ knew the power of undergirding those sent to serve with specific prayer.
How should we pray? We often hear prayers for missionaries to include safety and health. Many live in dangerous, high-risk areas with exposure to illnesses and limited access to medical care. Let’s consider how we can expand our praying:
RELATIONSHIPS
Pray that relationships are established, leading to conversations about salvation in Jesus alone.
ENCOUNTERS
Pray for divine encounters and sensitivity in hearing the Holy Spirit when responding to these encounters.
PEOPLE GROUP
Pray that targeted audiences, such as language or culture groups, an affinity or neighborhood group, have an openness to start conversations and relationships.
CHALLENGES/BARRIERS
Pray that whatever obstacles are faced, God will remove those challenges. Pray for a barrier breakthrough!
SPIRITUAL DEPTH
Pray missionaries hear from the Lord as they read and study Scripture. Pray that their souls are satisfied through the Word alone. Pray for emotional and spiritual needs.
Looking over this list, every item applies to you and me as well. Won’t you pray for relationships and encounters for you and your family? Won’t you dive into the Word for direction and clarity?
I recently stumbled upon this quote by Martin Luther, “Prayer is the sweat of the soul.” I’m pondering this quote as I am concerned with the depth of my sweat for the sake of the gospel.
Won’t you join me in the deep exercise of prayer, sweating the soul for Jesus?

Al reflexionar sobre el legado de WMU y su impacto en las misiones, cuatro puntos fundamentales se destacan: aprender, orar, dar y servir.
¿Por qué es tan importante la oración en las misiones? Orar ha sido parte de nuestro ADN desde nuestros inicios en 1880. Nuestras hermanas en Cristo comprendían el poder de respaldar mediante oraciones específicas a quienes eran enviados a servir.

Celebrating Transitions

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

Have you ever thought about transitions in life and how important they are to us?
We celebrate birthdays signifying the transition from one year to another. We celebrate graduations, observing the transition from one stage of life to another. We celebrate new jobs, new babies, new homes.
We also mourn in the space of transition. The loss of loved ones, the fracture of a relationship, the abandonment or transition of someone out of our lives.
Have you noticed that God used transitions in a mighty way? N Mark 4:3541, while transitioning from one shore to another, Jesus miraculously clams a storm.
Mark 5:21-43 tells of a transition where Jesus’ journey to heal Jairus’ daughter from death was interrupted by a woman of great faith who touched the hem of His garment for healing. The book of Exodus is filled with examples of God performing miracle after miracle as the nation of Israel transitioned from slavery to freedom.
In transition, there is noise, chaos, and distraction. But God can use transition to display His power.
For the past fourteen years, God has used the partnership between WMU of Texas and Buckner International to deliver blessings and miracles through transition. For fourteen vulnerable families in South Texas, the transition to a new home provided through the Women’s Build Project has meant safety, security, improved health, and stability. This physical transition is significant, but it is merely the tip of the iceberg when considering the deepening spiritual transitions occurring in these families’ souls due to the prayers and encouragement of those who participate.
Pray, asking God to open your eyes to the transitions around you so you can join Him in His redemptive work.

Blessing Retired M’s is a new ministry to support missionaries who are retiring and returning to Texas. Many missionaries leave the field after a lifetime of ministry with many treasures in heaven, but often only a suitcase of material possessions.
This ministry was launched to help provide the necessary household items most of us acquire over a lifetime. WMU of Texas sends an Amazon Gift List via our email newsletter so you can make purchases to bless these newly retired missionaries as they set up a new home stateside.

Nueva Oportunidad de Ministerio de WMU en la Frontera
Meet Vanessa Lerma, our first WMU of Texas missionary serving along the Texas/Mexico border.
God called Vanessa to ministry at a young age while serving in children and youth ministry. She was mentored and discipled by Godly women, her parents, and others like the late Daniel Rangel, who served with border ministry for many years. During that time, her passion to serve others and make disciples grew.
Growing up in Mission, Texas, a border city, she learned to embrace and love the unique culture and language of the people. “As I led Girls in Action and Acteens, I learned that missions is a lifestyle, and this helped confirm that God was calling me to missions,” Vanessa shares. New WMU Ministry Opportunity

churches and Christ-centered
ministries to share the hope in Christ.
As a WMU of Texas missionary, Vanessa feels blessed to serve others and be the hands and feet of Jesus on the border. She shares,

Community Mapping with the Observant Child

Growing up, one of my favorite games to play with my younger brothers was “I Spy.” In this game of observation, one player identifies what they can see, and the other player must guess what has been noticed. This game entertained my brothers for hours. The truth is – children love to observe things, and their eyes often notice things adults may miss.
Church leaders can leverage the perceptive eye of children through community mapping. In community mapping, we assess our communities to gain a deeper understanding of our surroundings and identify assets we can leverage to meet needs. In a congregational context, we are seeking opportunities for a missional presence in our own cities.
In community mapping, a strengths perspective is used to identify what resources already exist. This is where the child’s I Spy talents come in handy. Church leaders can encourage the extra-observant children to notice schools, housing, parks, public transportation, infrastructure, local organizations, food pantries, medical clinics, and more. Through a windshield or walking survey, church leaders can take children on a scavenger hunt in their own neighborhood. Though a child will see this as a fun game, it also functions as a systematic observation of the city to notice and count the number of assets that are frequently overlooked. After children spend some time noticing and observing, it is time to prayerfully reflect. God may highlight a new opportunity for service and calling through the eyes of a child!

How To Effectively Minister To Many Cultures & Nations?

There is a beautiful picture of the future in Revelations 7:9. “After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.”
The multicultural ministry should always focus on leading peoples, nations, tribes, and languages to Christ and interacting with diverse communities. Here are some practical suggestions for developing a strong and effective multicultural ministry.

ASK QUESTIONS
Show interest by asking questions about the other culture. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because they help us better understand each other avoiding misunderstandings and conflicts.
BE HUMBLE & LISTEN
Interact with humility, recognizing that no one has all the answers. We are all on a journey, learning to communicate and interact with each other more effectively. Listening is essential to learn about new cultures to build strong bridges.
CELEBRATE
Host cultural events, fairs, potluck dinners, prayer meetings, and language classes where your ministry can highlight the cultures you serve. Allowing other cultures to share and celebrate their uniqueness shows that you value cultural diversity.
REFLECT & ADAPT
Evaluation is ongoing as you reflect on the cultural interactions, events, and programs you created. If something doesn’t work, don’t give up. Use the opportunity to learn, adapt, and improve the methodology and communication. Flexibility is key when interacting with other cultures.
God created beauty in every culture and invites us to proclaim the good news of salvation and make disciples of all nations. Let’s bridge cultural gaps and foster welcoming environments as we reach out and minister effectively to the many cultures coming to our beautiful state of Texas.

hristian Men’s Job Corps (CMJC) offers men the opportunity to grow spiritually, build healthy relationships, gain life skills, improve job skills, walk with a mentor, and move from dependency to self-sufficiency.
J.T. Ramsey, a retired pastor and emeritus International Mission Board missionary to Brazil, Bermuda, and Mexico now serves as the Site Leader for the CMJC of Gregg County.
Upon learning about CMJC, J.T. assessed the needs in the community, organized the site curriculum, and scheduled meetings with board members. As the lead teacher, he recruited volunteer teachers and mentors, networked within the community, and raised awareness and funds for the site.
Lance, a graduate of CMJC of Gregg County shared, “The biggest thing you can learn in CMJC is to find the identity, the purpose, and the call for your season of life — not so much find yours, per se, or mine, but find God’s identity for your season.”
When asked about J.T., Lance stated, “J.T. is Christian Men’s Job Corps. He gives us so much encouragement and hope.”

Our primary focus through Sisters Who Care is missional disciple-making. The Gospels guide us toward this effort through cultural engagement, social action, and gospel proclamation. SWC aims to reach women in African American churches for cooperative missions to significantly impact our communities and churches.
MENTAL HEALTH
Many churchgoers are unaware, or just not sure how to address mental health in the church body. SWC wants to come alongside churches to bring education and awareness and to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health issues in the body of Christ.
The American Association of Christian Counselors (aacc.net, 2024) reported a 25-27% increase in depression and anxiety around the world since the pandemic, underscoring the urgent need for action. SWC offers resources, training, and education to help the body of Christ in the African American church.

Cartografía comunitaria con el niño observador

Cuando era pequeña, uno de mis juegos favoritos con mis hermanos menores era el “Veo, veo”. En este juego de observación, uno de los jugadores identifica lo que ve, y los demás deben adivinar qué es. Este juego entretenía a mis hermanos durante horas. La verdad es que a los niños les encanta observar cosas, y sus ojos a menudo notan detalles que los adultos pasan por alto.
Los líderes de la iglesia pueden aprovechar el ojo perspicaz de los niños mediante la cartografía comunitaria, tambien conocido como un mapeo comunitario. En la cartografía comunitaria, evaluamos nuestras comunidades para conocer mejor nuestro entorno e identificar los recursos disponibles para satisfacer las necesidades. El propósito de un mapeo comunitario para una congregación es identificar oportunidades para establecer una presencia misionera en nuestras propias ciudades.
En el mapeo comunitario, se utiliza una perspectiva basada en los puntos fuertes
para identificar los recursos ya existentes. Aquí es donde el talento observador del niño a traves del juego “Veo,veo” resultan útiles. Los líderes de la iglesia pueden animar a los niños más observadores a que se fijen en las escuelas, viviendas, parques, transporte público, infraestructuras, organizaciones locales, despensas de alimentos, clínicas médicas y mucho más. Mediante una encuesta desde el parabrisas o a pie, los líderes de la iglesia pueden llevar a los niños a una búsqueda del tesoro en su propio vecindario. Aunque los niños lo vean como un juego divertido, también funciona como una observación sistemática de la ciudad para identificar y contabilizar los recursos que a menudo se pasan por alto.
Después de que los niños dediquen tiempo a observar y tomar nota, es momento de reflexionar en oración. Dios podría revelar una nueva oportunidad de servicio y vocación a través de los ojos de un niño.

En Apocalipsis 7:9 hay una hermosa imagen del futuro. “Después de esto vi una enorme multitud de todo pueblo y toda nación, tribu y lengua, que era tan numerosa que nadie podía contarla. Estaban de pie delante del trono y delante del Cordero”.
El ministerio multicultural debe estar siempre enfocado en llevar a los pueblos, naciones, tribus y lenguas a Cristo, interactuando con comunidades diversas. Aquí se presentan algunas sugerencias prácticas para desarrollar un ministerio multicultural sólido y efectivo.
APRENDA LO BÁSICO
Investigue las creencias, costumbres, valores e idiomas de las culturas con las que desea conectarse. Lea libros, hable con misioneros, vea películas y documentales, participe en viajes misioneros y visite restaurantes o supermercados locales de diversas culturas.
HAGA PREGUNTAS
Muestre interés genuino haciendo preguntas sobre la otra cultura. No tema hacer preguntas, ya que estas nos ayudan a entendernos mejor y a evitar malentendidos y conflictos.
SEA HUMILDE Y ESCUCHE

REFLEXIONE Y ADAPTE
La evaluación continua es clave. Reflexione sobre las interacciones culturales, eventos y programas que ha implementado. Si algo no funciona, no se rinda. Aproveche la oportunidad para aprender, adaptar y mejorar la metodología y la comunicación. La flexibilidad es esencial en la interacción con diferentes culturas.

Campamento Menard
Un campamento para todas las generaciones

Durante los últimos ochenta y cinco años, el Campamento Menard ha alcanzado a todas las generaciones de diversas culturas, no sólo para Cristo, sino también capacitando al pueblo de Dios de todas las edades.
A través de Texans On Mission (Texas Baptist Men / TBM), WMU de Texas, Baptist Youth, Embajadores del Rey (RA), Niñas en Acción (GA), y Amiguitos Misioneros, generaciones han sido alcanzadas en los campamentos para fortalecer las iglesias y sus ministerios. Hoy en día, TBM ha contribuido a numerosos proyectos de construcción para mejorar el Campamento Menard, que se ha convertido en uno de los campamentos designados para la vida silvestre y para el entrenamiento al aire libre para los RA. MI EXPERIENCIA EN EL CAMPAMENTO MENARD
Mi nombre es Benny Saenz y he estado asistiendo al Campamento Menard desde que tenía 11 años.
A primera vista, el campamento Menard me dejó sin aliento. Proveniente del desierto, nunca había visto tantos árboles. Recuerdo haber presenciado un partido de fútbol, una banda tocando en el Tabernáculo, y me emocioné aún más cuando vi a un grupo de jóvenes jugando voleibol. Ese primer año, hice amigos para toda la vida.
Cuando crecí, empecé a servir en el campamento juvenil. Esta fue una experiencia emocionante, ya que estuve lejos de casa por dos semanas y participé en las mejores representaciones en el equipo de drama. Asistir al Campamento Menard cada verano tuvo un impacto significativo en mi crecimiento espiritual.
Diez años más tarde, cuando me casé con Noemi y tuvimos a nuestro primer hijo, Benjamin, le compartí en múltiples ocasiones cuánto significaba para mí esta “Tierra Santa”. Compré un remolque plegable con aire acondicionado y llevé a mi esposa y a nuestro hijo de tres semanas al campamento en familia. Ella también se enamoró del campamento.
El 8 de julio de 2011, mi esposa decidió bautizarse en el río San Saba en el Campamento Menard. Aunque no se dio cuenta en ese momento, estaba iniciando
una tradición familiar. Al año siguiente, nuestro hijo mayor fue bautizado en el mismo río. Unos años después, tuve el honor de bautizar a nuestro segundo hijo, Samuel, y a nuestro hijo menor, Benito, Jr., durante el Campamento de los Embajadores del Rey (RA). Hoy, cada vez que hay un día de trabajo en el campamento queremos ir. Desde la construcción del puente a los dormitorios hasta la edificación del puente sobre el río que lleva a lo que llamamos “la Isla Retadora”, mi familia siempre está allí para ayudar. Actualmente, estoy trabajando en un proyecto para construir un campo de tiro con rifle, y el Campamento Menard meme ha financiado para convertirme en un Oficial de Seguridad de Campo certificado a través de la Asociación Nacional del Rifle. Me convertí en líder de RA cuando me presentaron el programa en el campamento. Todos mis chicos llevan con orgullo sus chalecos de RA con todas las insignias que han ganado. Todos ellos han cruzado por las diferentes etapas: Lads, Crusaders, y ahora están en el programa Challengers
• Benjamin sirvió como empleado estatal desde los 12 años hasta que se graduó. Ahora ha obtenido su certificación de adulto y es el líder de los Lads.
• Samuel está siguiendo los pasos de su hermano mayor y este es su segundo año como empleado.
• Benito Jr. asistirá a un Campamento
de Entrenamiento de Liderazgo el próximo año.
• Mi esposa nos ayuda en el RA Camp Menard asegurándose de que todos los RAs tomen su medicamento.
Ya sea en el Campamento Familiar, el Campamento de RA, el Desayuno de Hombres, disfrutamos servir juntos como familia.
Desde la primera vez que pisé los terrenos del Campamento Menard, me ha encantado este pedacito de cielo. Me da alegría compartirlo con mi familia, sabiendo que ellos también han crecido amándolo. Oro para que, cuando mis hijos se casen y tengan hijos, mantengan la pasión que tenemos por el Campamento Menard.
El Campamento Menard se enfoca en el compañerismo, la obra misionera y la evangelización. Durante el verano y el otoño, se celebran anualmente los siguientes campamentos:
• Campamento Acteen/Girls in Action (GA) a finales de junio
