STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Mission Statement

The mission of the Western Michigan University strength and conditioning program is to provide each student-athlete with an opportunity to develop their physical abilities, through safe and objective training. Through these means the strength and conditioning program will attempt to improve athletic performance and minimize injuries related to athletic competition.

Philosophy

At Western Michigan University, each workout will be an organized and detailed plan, combining exercise selection with effective set and repetition schemes, to be coordinated with appropriate conditioning. These workouts will afford each athlete an opportunity to improve technique in all exercises, improve muscular strength, and improve conditioning without overtraining.

FIT AND STRONG.

DONALD J. SEELYE

The offices of the men’s soccer coaching staff are located on the third floor of the Seelye Center. The offices overlook the turf bay practice facility from the east and overlook Waldo Stadium to the west, with the offices also doubling as suites on game days.

The Bronco soccer team practices year-round in the Donald J. Seelye Athletic Center, located adjacent to Waldo Stadium. The $25 million facility houses an 80-yard AstroPlay synthetic turf and encompasses 120,000 suare feet. The indoor turf bay reaches a height of eight stories, allowing for unrestricted play. The Broncos annually host an indoor tournament during the winter season. The Seelye Center also houses the Bronco soccer locker room, which was refurbished prior to the 2009 season, coaches’ offices, a fully-equipped weight room, athletic training facility and meeting rooms. Completed in 2003, the Seelye Center was made possible through the leadership gift from the Seelye family. Don Seelye was a loyal supporter of Bronco Athletics, a community leader and successful businessman.

HEAD COACH STU RIDDLE

HEAD COACH Coastal Carolina, ’03 First Season Stu Riddle was announced as Western Michigan University’s head men’s soccer coach on January 30, 2009. Riddle becomes the sixth head coach in program history.

THE RIDDLE FILE COACHING EXPERIENCE 2008 Fairfield University 2008 Kalamazoo Outrage (PDL) 2005-07 University of Evansville 2006 Kalamazoo Kingdom (PDL) 2001-02 Coastal Carolina

Assistant Coach Head Coach Assistant Coach Head Coach Assistant Coach

PLAYING EXPERIENCE 1996 New Zealand National Team 1997-98 Coastal Carolina 1999 Football Kingz 2001 Oxford City 2001 Greenock Morton 2001-02 Des Moines Menace 2004 West Michigan Edge 2005 Altona Magic

All-Big South Conference, ’97, ‘98 New Zealand (Professional) England (Professional) Scotland (Professional) (PDL) (PDL) Australia (Professional)

Prior to joining the Broncos, Riddle helped guide Fairfield University to a 2008 NCAA tournament appearance after defeating previously unbeaten and No.6 nationally ranked Loyola College to win the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Conference Championship. In 2008 Riddle, who was born in Luton, England, but raised in Wellington, New Zealand, accepted the challenge of developing the Kalamazoo Outrage soccer program with its first season of competition coming that summer. The Outrage finished their 2008 campaign with a 10-7-1 record beating perennial Premier Development League (PDL) powerhouses the Michigan Bucks and Chicago Fire in the PDL playoffs before losing to eventual national champion Thunder Bay Chill in the last eight of the competition. He also established a partnership with English club Sheffield Wednesday that allowed players and staff from both clubs to integrate for the benefit of both programs. Riddle maintains his relationship with the Sheffield Wednesday coaching staff and has visited the famed club on three occasions, most recently this past Spring, to assess training methods and the development of their top players. Riddle spent two seasons as an assistant soccer coach at the University of Evansville, beginning with the 2005 campaign. In his second year with the Purple Aces the team posted a 9-8-0 record, only the program’s third winning season since 1997. He was responsible for recruiting student athletes as well as coaching and developing players throughout the season. Riddle also assisted with community relations. Columbus Crew midfielder Cory Elenio who was part of the Crew’s 2008 MLS Cup winning side spent two seasons working closely with Riddle at Evansville while Riddle also assisted in the development of US U-20 national team goalkeeper Alec Dufty and New Zealand U-20 World Cup defender Kieran Purcell. His coaching resume also includes time as head coach for the Kalamazoo Kingdom PDL side in 2006 where former LA Galaxy MLS midfielder Josh Tudela and 2006 National High School Player of the Year Eric Alexander spent a season playing under Riddle’s tutelage. The Kingdom became only the second team to defeat the Chicago Fire at home in six seasons of play when they battled to a 2-0 win in Chicago in May 2006. As a player Riddle played collegiately at Coastal Carolina University where he was twice named team MVP and was an All-Big South Conference team member in 1997 and 1998. Riddle signed with New Zealand’s first ever professional soccer team the Football Kingz in 1999 where he played with Oceania Player of the Century Wynton Rufer and with current San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) Assistant Coach Jason Batty. Riddle went on to play professionally in England with Oxford City, Scotland with Greenock Morton and in Australia with Altona Magic. While at Greenock Morton, Riddle was coached by European Cup winner and former Liverpool and Scotland national team star Peter Cormack. He also played in the United States with the Des Moines Menace and West Michigan Edge in the PDL. As a youth player Riddle played alongside Harvard University head coach Jamie Clark for Western Suburbs FC as a guest player in New Zealand’s national under-19 tournament in which he was one of three nominations for Player of the Tournament. Riddle made his international debut for the New Zealand Olympic All Whites in January 1996, appearing in a 2-0 victory over the Solomon Islands. He went on to play in four national team games under current University of Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark, highlighted by an appearance in a 1-0 victory over arch rivals Australia in Adelaide. Riddle holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Diploma and is a contributing writer for Soccer International magazine and has had articles published with www.tribalfootball.com. Prior to the 2009 season, was named as one of nine NCAA Division I head coaches on the NSCAA Men’s National Rankings Committee. Riddle serves as committee head for the Great Lakes Region, reporting weekly to National Chair Carl Rees with a national top 25 and regional top 10 vote. Sixty-one teams, including Western Michigan, comprise the Great Lakes Region.

Riddle graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Coastal Carolina University and a Master of Science in Public Administration from the University of Evansville. He and his wife, Jessica, reside in Kalamazoo.

2009 Western Michigan Men’s Soccer COMMENTS ON RIDDLE FROM AROUND THE NATION

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Stu Riddle for 11 years and have always been impressed with his insight, passion and understanding of the game and those who play it. He is without doubt one of the country’s top young coaches. His drive and communication skills set him apart and will guarantee his program future success.” --- Carl Rees, Head Men’s Soccer Coach Fairfield University Chair of NSCAA National Rankings Committee “I first knew Stu back in the mid-90s when Stu was a member of the New Zealand Olympic team and I was the head coach. As a player he had a fabulous attitude, great discipline and had a true passion for the game of soccer. We have kept in touch over the years and it is great to see that he has retained his early enthusiasm for the game and is now using his experience to help develop young college players in the U.S. I am confident that he will be a wonderful role model for the players at Western Michigan and I look forward to following his success in the years ahead.” --- Bobby Clark, Head Men’s Soccer Coach, University of Notre Dame “Stu’s passion for the game is easy to see, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. His energy and attitude are infectious, and I know that he will be a success at Western Michigan.” --- Mike Jacobs, Head Men’s Soccer Coach, University of Evansville “Stu Riddle first came to my notice as a confident, fresh-faced 19-year-old striker with a knack of scoring goals. He continued in that vein throughout his playing career at every level he played in. From my first meeting with him I could tell that there was a special quality about him. Stu has an infectious personality and drive that served him well as a player and that I know will serve him well in his coaching career. He has always been a student of the game and is constantly looking for new ideas and methods for use in his coaching career. He has the ability not only to teach the game at a high level but also the added bonus of being able to demonstrate what is required. I am sure that the players at Western Michigan will benefit greatly from his vast knowledge, ability and enthusiasm.” --- Ken Dugdale, Head Coach Vollen FC, Norway New Zealand National Team Coach 1998-2002

HEAD COACH STU RIDDLE

“WMU soccer is very fortunate to get such a great, young coach in Stu Riddle. His passion, enthusiasm, and desire to take WMU soccer to new, unprecedented heights is unmatched. As a WMU soccer alumnus, I could not be more excited to have a person of Stu’s character leading our Broncos into the future. WMU soccer is in very good hands!” --- Eric Pogue, Head Men’s Soccer Coach Oakland University, WMU Soccer Alum

“Stu was an excellent player and servant of Coastal Carolina University as both a player and a coach. His soccer knowledge and awareness about the game are second to none!. Stuart was an excellent leader and captain during his time here, and really built a tremendous amount of respect with his strong interpersonal skills among the players and coaches alike. In the past several years Stu has been able to serve as an assistant coach to many great head coaches and programs at the Division I level and I have no doubts that Western Michigan will become a powerhouse Division I program not only in the Midwest, but in Division I men’s soccer for many years to come!” --- Shaun Docking, Head Men’s Soccer Coach Coastal Carolina University Head of Region 3, ODP “I have known Stu from crossing paths on a professional playing level in England, during this time I knew he had what it takes to become a good coach with his organizational and leadership qualities, we are now sharing ideas and opportunities for young players in our current roles, it is a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to work again with Stu at a coaching level and I’m sure he will make a great success of the Broncos.” --- Sean McAuley, Academy Manager, Sheffield Wednesday FC “I’ve known Stu for quite a while now; we’ve played and coached together throughout the years. He has always had a great passion and enthusiasm for the game. I’ve followed his U.S. coaching career with interest, and he has developed a great knack of scouting and recruiting very well from all over the globe. I’m sure with his drive and work ethic the Broncos will be a force to be reckoned with. I look forward to watching his continued success with Western Michigan in the coming years!” --- Jason Batty, Assistant Coach San Jose Earthquakes, Major League Soccer

Tom Boehm (1977-81) certainly earned his keep on a busy autumn afternoon on Sept. 21, 1979. Facing regional power Evansville on the Aces’ home turf, Boehm turned away 37 shots to preserve a 0-0 tie in double overtime. Boehm was actually credited with an improbable 52 saves that day, a number later modified to 37 based on current shots-on-goal standards. Nevertheless, Boehm’s performance still ranks second-best in NCAA history.

Notes regarding the records section: • From 1971-82, goals counted for one point in player individual statistics. For sake of comparsion, point totals prior to the 1983 season in this record section have been adjusted to meet today’s standards: two points for a goal, one point for an assist. • Two types of shots have been recorded through the years. “Shots on Goal” produce either a goal or a goalkeeper save. SOGs were recorded during the following years: 1971, 1973-80, 1986-89, 1990-94. In accordance with the latest NCAA rulebook, a shot is now defined as any “kick directed towards goal with the intent to score” — no matter how wide or high. This definition has been in use since the 1995 season and was previously applied during the period of 1981-85. • The same criteria holds true for “Shots Faced” by goalkeepers. From 1971, ‘7380, ‘86-89, ‘90-94, only “Shots on Goal” were recorded while under today’s scoring procedures, any shot directed towards goal counts as a “Shot Faced” (this was true for the 1981-85 seasons, ‘95-present).

• Starting in 2005, games became shorter in length as NCAA overtimes went from two 15-minute periods to two 10-minute periods.

Kathy Beauregard, the Director of Athletics at Western Michigan University, has been involved with the Broncos in several capacities over the course of the past 29 years. She is the second-longest serving athletic director in the Mid-American Conference.

KATHY BEAUREGARD

Beauregard arrived in Kalamazoo as a coach before moving into administration and is entering her 12th season as mentor of one of the top programs in the MAC.

Along with four MAC titles (men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s tennis) in 2003-04, the Broncos also enjoyed an increased level of success in the classroom. WMU’s graduation rate of 83 percent in 2003 ranked eighth nationally and featured a program grade point average of nearly 3.00. On the playing field in 2002-03, the athletics campaign was highlighted by a pair of conference titles in women’s basketball and softball. The men’s basketball team also made a postseason appearance, competing in the National Invitation Tournament. Postseason appearances by the WMU football, volleyball and men’s tennis team highlighted the program’s 2000-01 athletic competition.

WMU athletic facilities have greatly improved under Beauregard’s leadership. The $8-million dollar Bill Brown Football Alumni Center and the $21-million Seelye Athletic Indoor Center have benefited numerous sports teams and provide top-notch facilities for Bronco student-athletes. The locker rooms at Lawson Ice Arena were renovated and completed over the past year and the department continues to raise funds for the Hyames Field Renovation Project. WMU is in the midst of building a two million dollar state-of-the-art facility and Field Turf was also installed at Waldo Stadium during the Summer of 2006.

The 1999-2000 campaign was highlighted by the football team’s West Division title and trip to the MAC Championship. The women’s tennis squad captured the MAC Tourney title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and the women’s basketball squad made its second-consecutive appearance in the WNIT.

Heavily involved in her profession, Beauregard assumed the chair position of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee in 2001, a position which she held for two years. She represented WMU as a member of the NCAA Championships Cabinet and NCAA Football Bowl Certification Committee and currently serves on the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Previously the senior associate athletic director (1993-97), she supervised all revenue sports, the University’s compliance with NCAA rules, academic services, student-athlete welfare, and athletic marketing and communications.

The 2008-09 year saw the Bronco volleyball and men’s tennis programs capture regular season MAC crowns. The volleyball team advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament, while the Bronco football team participated in its second bowl in three seasons and the men’s basketball team won yet another MAC West title.

In just her second year (1998-99), Beauregard provided support which helped the Bronco men’s athletic squads jump from 10th to first place in the Reese Cup standings, giving Western Michigan a share of its first all-sports trophy in 17 years.

Beauregard initially came to WMU in 1979 as head women’s gymnastics coach. In nine seasons (1980-88), she produced two MAC title teams and was twice named the conference’s coach of the year. Beauregard has been active in numerous community service organizations, including Kalamazoo Rotary, the American Heart Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Glowing Embers Girl Scouts Council.

The 2007-08 academic year saw success within the department, on the playing field and in the classroom. WMU Athletics announced the renovation of historic Hyames Field. Heading into the future, the facility will be known as Robert J. Bobb Stadium and will undergo $2.0 million of work over the next year. Renovations to Sorensen Courts, Fran Ebert Field and upcoming work to the men’s basketball locker rooms all highlight Beauregard’s dedication to moving WMU Athletics forward.

Honored by numerous organizations throughout her career, Beauregard was awarded both the Woman of Achievement Award (YWCA) and Athena Award (Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce) in 2002.

Athletically, WMU’s tennis programs found success yet again with both winning a regular season MAC title and the men’s program capturing the tournament title to earn a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Both Dave Morin and Besty Kuhle were named MAC Coaches of the Year for the second-straight season. The men’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs captured MAC West titles during the past athletic season. A pair of Bronco track student-athletes earned All-America honors with Becky Horn earning the nod during the indoor and outdoor seasons and finishing third in the 800m at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In 2000, Beauregard received the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater.

Beauregard is a native of Kalamazoo and graduate of Loy Norrix High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 1979 and a master’s degree from WMU in 1981.

She and husband, Rick, have a 18-year-old son, Brad, who will attend WMU in 2009. Rick retired from Kalamazoo Public Schools after 32 years of service and began Beauregard Home Services in the Fall of 2006.

Beauregard ensured the longevity of WMU’s football and men’s basketball programs by restructuring Bill Cubit’s and Steve Hawkins’ contracts in 2007 and 2008, respectively. WMU Athletics also welcomed Tasha McDowell as the fifth head coach of WMU’s women’s basketball program in 2008. Academically, WMU boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in Anthony Gebhart (first team) and Joe Reitz (second team). Gebhart was the first football representative since 1998. Volleyball, baseball and gymnastics finished in the top 10 among other like programs in the APR and WMU football had the highest APR score in the MAC for the 2006-07 campaign. Overall, 415 student-athletes finished 2007-08 with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. In 2006-07, men’s and women’s tennis not only repeated as MAC Tournament champions but captured regular season titles as well. Both Morin and Kuhle earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. The WMU football team participated in the program’s first postseason bowl game since 1988. The Broncos boasted three NCAA statistical champions in five categories — Ameer Ismail (FB - sacks and tackles for loss); Carrie Moore (WBB - points per game) and Mark Letestu (HOCKEY - freshman scoring and short-handed goals). Western Michigan continued to pursue excellence in the classroom in 2006-07 as 26 student-athletes in 14 sports earned Academic All-MAC status. WMU had five of its programs honored as being in the top-10 percent in their respective sport in the announcement for their excellence in the classroom over the years identified in the most recent APR; baseball, men’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Broncos boasted five academic all-district selections and a pair of academic all-americans in Joe Reitz and Carrie Moore. Moore and Ismail earned All-America status in their respective sports with Moore receiving honorable mention for Kodak All-American and Ismail earning Second Team AP All-American.

In 2005-06, Beauregard oversaw a department that captured the Jacoby Cup Trophy, awarded to the top women’s program in the MAC based on sports standings. WMU has now won the Jacoby and Reese (men’s overall sports award) trophies during Beauregard’s tenure. The Broncos garnered three regular season titles — gymnastics, softball and women’s tennis and two MAC Tournament titles — gymnastics and women’s tennis. Under Beauregard’s direction, WMU also won its 100th MAC title all-time in 2005-06. The 2004-05 athletic campaign continued what has become common place at Western Michigan. Team and individual success began in the fall and continued through the spring, highlighted by a MAC Championship in women’s tennis. The strength of the women’s programs as a group allowed WMU to finish second in the Jacoby Cup.
