WMU Tennis is ... WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY MEN’S TENNIS STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PHILOSOPHY The Western Michigan University Men’s Tennis Strength and Conditioning Program is a year round effort to maintain a championship level of strength, power, speed and conditioning. The program is built to help each athlete play at their optimal level during practice and games, stay healthy and improve performance by incorporating explosiveness and intensity in each workout. Using a combination of Olympic exercises, functional training and tennis-specific speed and agility training, each Bronco Tennis student-athlete will be physically ready to make that championship run.

WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TRAINING The focus of the WMU athletic training staff is to prevent studentathlete injuries and facilitate an effective post-injury rehabilitation to ensure a safe return to competition. Five full-time athletic trainers oversee three graduate athletic trainers in providing comprehensive medical care to all of Western Michigan’s 16 varsity sports. In addition to its eight-person athletic training staff, the WMU athletic training staff is assisted by three full-time physicians and a sports medicine fellow.

MORIN HEAD COACH Minnesota, ‘84 14th Year WMU (223-110 .670) 19th Year Head Coach (265-157 .628)

STAFF BIOS

An eight-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year (1994, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), Western Michigan head coach Dave Morin has had the Broncos consistently in the hunt for conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances during his 13 seasons in Kalamazoo. Morin’s tenure has been highlighted by six regular season MAC championships (1999, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009) and seven MAC Tournament championships that led to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. En route to those accomplishments, the Broncos have encountered the type of individual and team success often associated with Western Michigan’s proud tradition. The only coach to win MAC Coach of the Year honors at two different schools, Morin is 265-157 as a collegiate head coach with 223 of his wins coming at WMU. Morin’s teams have been especially dominant in the MAC with an 96-32 record in regular season and tournament play. The Broncos have advanced to the MAC title match 10 times in his 13 seasons as head coach at WMU. Individually, a total of 19 players have earned all-conference accolades during Morin’s tenure. Morin’s list also includes four MAC Rookies of the Year, an ITA Region IV Freshman of the Year, and the 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2009 MAC Player of the Year.

WMU also went a perfect 5-0 in the regular season to set a new MAC record with its 20th MAC men’s tennis championship. During the year, Morin claimed his 200th victory with a 4-3 upset of No. 63 William & Mary (4/4). The Broncos were led by four All-MAC players in Hayward, Alex Birchmeier, Kazuya Komada and MAC Tournament MVP Alejandro Staub, in addition to Birchmeier, Staub and Bryan Norville making the Academic All-MAC team. 2006-07 Morin led the Broncos to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time in school history in 2007. He led WMU to an undefeated Mid-American Conference regular season championship, the 19th MAC regular season title in school history, and then guided WMU to its second consecutive MAC Tournament championship and fifth overall. The team finished the year ranked No. 54 in the country and No. 7 in the Midwest Region, while juniors Alex Birchmeier and Bryan Norville finished the

In the classroom, Western Michigan has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team for 10 of the past 11 seasons. The program was one of 11 NCAA Division I teams to earn that honor in 1999 after posting a school record 3.69 team GPA. There also have been 24 players who have been named to the Academic All-MAC roster. WMU players have also earned academic accolades at the national level, including two-time Academic All-America honoree Jeff Brink, who graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. 2008-09 The Broncos continued to maintain their superior position in the MAC by earning a third consecutive undefeated MAC championship and fourth consecutive MAC Tournament title to advance to play No. 13 Illinois in the program’s seventh NCAA Tournament. Morin was named Coach of the Year for the fourth year in a row after rallying the Broncos from 9-8 to 18-8 going into the NCAAs. Morin guided Kevin Hayward to MAC Player of the Year after finishing his career fifth all-time in wins (191). He was joined on the All-MAC First Team by Michael Calderone and Kazuya Komada, who also were on the Academic All-MAC Team with Casey Cullen.

2007-08 This squad was highlighted by earning the first NCAA Tournament point in team history against No. 16 Michigan. Hayward and Cullen defeated the No. 38 tandem in the country and then freshmen Calderone and Komada won, 9-8, to give the Broncos the early advantage, 1-0, in the Broncos’ third consecutive NCAA appearance and sixth overall. The Broncos reached the NCAA Tournament by dispatching Ball State in the MAC Tournament finals and reaching 20 wins for only the eighth time in school history.

Four Broncos were named Academic All-MAC, three were named First Team All-MAC and one was named Second Team All-MAC as Morin was named MAC Coach of the Year for a sixth time. For a second straight season, Brady Crosby was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV Men’s At-Large First Team and Birchmeier made his first appearance on the prestigious team. 2005-06 Morin had his most successful season at WMU in 2006 when he led the Broncos to a school record 25 wins on their way to a MAC Tournament championship and the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. Morin has been at the helm for each of WMU’s previous NCAA Tournament trips (1999, 2001, 2004). The Broncos remained a consistent force in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Region by going 15-2, but they also proved to be a national force. WMU went 4-1 against the Big Ten, 2-0 against the Big East and 1-1 against the Big XII while accumulating a 7-5 record against nationally-ranked competition. Morin also helped lead WMU to a No. 37 national ranking, the highest in program history, while also winning his 200th career match as coach and passing legendary head coach Hap Sorensen for second place in wins DAVE MORIN’S YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD at Western Michigan. 2000-01 The Broncos took second place in the MAC with a 4-1 record, but then stormed through the MAC Tournament to claim the program’s second NCAA Tournament berth. Fernando Garcia was named MAC Player of the Year and Ravi Pathanjail was named MAC Newcomer of the Year. Garcia was a First Team All-MAC honoree, while Pathanjali, Steve Pillon and Ryan Tomlinson were all named Second Team All-MAC.

Morin arrived in Kalamazoo in 1996 after directing the program at fellow MAC member Bowling Green for five seasons. While with the Falcons, Morin guided the team to three third-place MAC finishes, the school’s highest finish in over a decade. For his efforts, he was awarded MAC Coach of the Year in 1994. Prior to BGSU, Morin served as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota, for one season. Kathy Beauregard, the Director of Athletics at Western Michigan University, has been involved with the Broncos in several capacities over the course of the past 29 years. She is the second-longest serving athletic director in the Mid-American Conference.

KATHY BEAUREGARD

Beauregard arrived in Kalamazoo as a coach before moving into administration and is entering her 12th season as mentor of one of the top programs in the MAC.

Along with four MAC titles (men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s tennis) in 2003-04, the Broncos also enjoyed an increased level of success in the classroom. WMU’s graduation rate of 83 percent in 2003 ranked eighth nationally and featured a program grade point average of nearly 3.00. On the playing field in 2002-03, the athletics campaign was highlighted by a pair of conference titles in women’s basketball and softball. The men’s basketball team also made a postseason appearance, competing in the National Invitation Tournament. Postseason appearances by the WMU football, volleyball and men’s tennis team highlighted the program’s 2000-01 athletic competition.

WMU athletic facilities have greatly improved under Beauregard’s leadership. The $8-million dollar Bill Brown Football Alumni Center and the $21-million Seelye Athletic Indoor Center have benefited numerous sports teams and provide top-notch facilities for Bronco student-athletes. The locker rooms at Lawson Ice Arena were renovated and completed over the past year and the department continues to raise funds for the Hyames Field Renovation Project. WMU is in the midst of building a two million dollar state-of-the-art facility and Field Turf was also installed at Waldo Stadium during the Summer of 2006.

The 1999-2000 campaign was highlighted by the football team’s West Division title and trip to the MAC Championship. The women’s tennis squad captured the MAC Tourney title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and the women’s basketball squad made its second-consecutive appearance in the WNIT.

Heavily involved in her profession, Beauregard assumed the chair position of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee in 2001, a position which she held for two years. She represented WMU as a member of the NCAA Championships Cabinet and NCAA Football Bowl Certification Committee and currently serves on the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Previously the senior associate athletic director (1993-97), she supervised all revenue sports, the University’s compliance with NCAA rules, academic services, student-athlete welfare, and athletic marketing and communications.

The 2008-09 year saw the Bronco volleyball and men’s tennis programs capture regular season MAC crowns. The volleyball team advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament, while the Bronco football team participated in its second bowl in three seasons and the men’s basketball team won yet another MAC West title.

In just her second year (1998-99), Beauregard provided support which helped the Bronco men’s athletic squads jump from 10th to first place in the Reese Cup standings, giving Western Michigan a share of its first all-sports trophy in 17 years.

Beauregard initially came to WMU in 1979 as head women’s gymnastics coach. In nine seasons (1980-88), she produced two MAC title teams and was twice named the conference’s coach of the year. Beauregard has been active in numerous community service organizations, including Kalamazoo Rotary, the American Heart Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Glowing Embers Girl Scouts Council.

The 2007-08 academic year saw success within the department, on the playing field and in the classroom. WMU Athletics announced the renovation of historic Hyames Field. Heading into the future, the facility will be known as Robert J. Bobb Stadium and will undergo $2.0 million of work over the next year. Renovations to Sorensen Courts, Fran Ebert Field and upcoming work to the men’s basketball locker rooms all highlight Beauregard’s dedication to moving WMU Athletics forward.

Honored by numerous organizations throughout her career, Beauregard was awarded both the Woman of Achievement Award (YWCA) and Athena Award (Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce) in 2002.

Athletically, WMU’s tennis programs found success yet again with both winning a regular season MAC title and the men’s program capturing the tournament title to earn a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Both Dave Morin and Besty Kuhle were named MAC Coaches of the Year for the second-straight season. The men’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs captured MAC West titles during the past athletic season. A pair of Bronco track student-athletes earned All-America honors with Becky Horn earning the nod during the indoor and outdoor seasons and finishing third in the 800m at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In 2000, Beauregard received the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater.

Beauregard is a native of Kalamazoo and graduate of Loy Norrix High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 1979 and a master’s degree from WMU in 1981.

She and husband, Rick, have a 18-year-old son, Brad, who will attend WMU in 2009. Rick retired from Kalamazoo Public Schools after 32 years of service and began Beauregard Home Services in the Fall of 2006.

Beauregard ensured the longevity of WMU’s football and men’s basketball programs by restructuring Bill Cubit’s and Steve Hawkins’ contracts in 2007 and 2008, respectively. WMU Athletics also welcomed Tasha McDowell as the fifth head coach of WMU’s women’s basketball program in 2008. Academically, WMU boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in Anthony Gebhart (first team) and Joe Reitz (second team). Gebhart was the first football representative since 1998. Volleyball, baseball and gymnastics finished in the top 10 among other like programs in the APR and WMU football had the highest APR score in the MAC for the 2006-07 campaign. Overall, 415 student-athletes finished 2007-08 with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. In 2006-07, men’s and women’s tennis not only repeated as MAC Tournament champions but captured regular season titles as well. Both Morin and Kuhle earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. The WMU football team participated in the program’s first postseason bowl game since 1988. The Broncos boasted three NCAA statistical champions in five categories — Ameer Ismail (FB - sacks and tackles for loss); Carrie Moore (WBB - points per game) and Mark Letestu (HOCKEY - freshman scoring and short-handed goals). Western Michigan continued to pursue excellence in the classroom in 2006-07 as 26 student-athletes in 14 sports earned Academic All-MAC status. WMU had five of its programs honored as being in the top-10 percent in their respective sport in the announcement for their excellence in the classroom over the years identified in the most recent APR; baseball, men’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Broncos boasted five academic all-district selections and a pair of academic all-americans in Joe Reitz and Carrie Moore. Moore and Ismail earned All-America status in their respective sports with Moore receiving honorable mention for Kodak All-American and Ismail earning Second Team AP All-American.

In 2005-06, Beauregard oversaw a department that captured the Jacoby Cup Trophy, awarded to the top women’s program in the MAC based on sports standings. WMU has now won the Jacoby and Reese (men’s overall sports award) trophies during Beauregard’s tenure. The Broncos garnered three regular season titles — gymnastics, softball and women’s tennis and two MAC Tournament titles — gymnastics and women’s tennis. Under Beauregard’s direction, WMU also won its 100th MAC title all-time in 2005-06. The 2004-05 athletic campaign continued what has become common place at Western Michigan. Team and individual success began in the fall and continued through the spring, highlighted by a MAC Championship in women’s tennis. The strength of the women’s programs as a group allowed WMU to finish second in the Jacoby Cup.
