WMU Tennis is ... WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S TENNIS STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PHILOSOPHY The Western Michigan University Women’s Tennis Strength and Conditioning Program is a year round effort to maintain a championship level of strength, power, speed and conditioning. The program is built to help each athlete play at their optimal level during practice and games, stay healthy and improve performance by incorporating explosiveness and intensity in each workout. Using a combination of Olympic exercises, functional training and tennisspecific speed and agility training, each Bronco Tennis studentathlete will be physically ready to make that championship run.

WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TRAINING The focus of the WMU athletic training staff is to prevent studentathlete injuries and facilitate an effective post-injury rehabilitation to ensure a safe return to competition. Five full-time athletic trainers oversee three graduate athletic trainers in providing comprehensive medical care to all of Western Michigan’s 16 varsity sports. In addition to its eight-person athletic training staff, the WMU athletic training staff is assisted by three full-time physicians and a sports medicine fellow.

The Western Michigan men’s and women’s tennis teams play their outdoor matches on campus at Sorensen Courts, named for former men’s tennis coach Ray “Hap” Sorensen.

Sorensen Courts is one of the homes for the USTA Boys 18s and 16s National Championships each year and has also played host to the 2000 MidAmerican Conference Women’s Tennis Championships and 2001 and 2005 MAC Men’s Tennis Championships.

The complex includes 20 total courts in upper and lower tiers. The upper Sorensen Courts feature eight brand-new blue- On campus, the Broncos also have access to surfaced courts that were completed in July complete athletic training and strength and of 2006. The lower courts feature 12 brand conditioning facilities in Read Fieldhouse. new courts that were completed in July 2007. The entire facility is lighted for play deep into the night and features access to water and electricity for all courts.

When winter rolls in, the Western Michigan tennis teams play in one of the best indoor facilities in the state. Purchased in 1998 by the university, West Hills Athletic Club features nine hard courts, spacious viewing areas, an expansive weight room and excellent locker room facilities. The Broncos practice and play matches at West Hills during the season when forced indoors because of inclement weather.

... Home Court Advantage

WMU Tennis is ... The Ellis Athletic Academic Advising Center is located on the second floor of Read Fieldhouse. The athletic academic services program exists to provide a comfortable and supportive environment in which studentathletes can strive to achieve academic success. The Ellis Center houses the academic services staff, computer labs, tutoring program, composition specialists, study table and the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. The mission of this athletic academic service program is to assist student-athletes in reaching their full potential by providing them with the necessary tools and skills to achieve academic success.

The court is not the only arena Western Michigan tennis has shown success during head coach Betsy Kuhle’s tenure. The Broncos are the only team to be recognized as an ITA AllAcademic Team for all 15 years of the award’s existence and 35 different players have been named ITA Scholar-Athlete or Academic All-MAC. Nearly every player that comes through the program has earned a degree with 98 percent of Coach Kuhle’s players graduating. The women’s tennis team was recognized in 2007 by the NCAA for having an APR in the top 10 percent of all women’s tennis programs in the country.

The women’s tennis program often produces the best team grade-point average of any WMU athletic program. In fact, a women’s tennis player has earned the prestigious WMU Senior Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both 2008 (Noriko Saruta-right) and 2009 (Kerstin Pahl-below).

The Broncos steamrolled through the MAC by dropping only three points all year on their way to winning both the regular season and tournament championship and earning the third NCAA Tournament berth in school history. The team was a success both on the court and in the classroom as it featured both the MAC Player of the Year (Malena Remynse) and MAC Freshman of the Year (Pahl), three All-MAC honorees (Remynse, Jeanmaire, Reedhina Parekh), the MAC Tournament MVP (Rattiya Hiranrat) and four Academic All-MAC honorees (Hiranrat, R. Parekh, Jeanmaire, Remynse). Hiranrat’s honors concluded a year where she set new school records with 200 overall wins and 109 doubles wins in a career.

KUHLE A 2006 inductee into the Western Michigan Athletic Hall of Fame, women’s tennis head coach Betsy Kuhle has long since established the Western Michigan women’s tennis program as the top program in the Mid-American Conference, but one of the best in the region as well. The longest-tenured coach at WMU in any sport, the 200910 season will mark the 28th year that Kuhle will guide the Bronco tennis program. Kuhle also holds the MAC record with seven MAC Coach of the Year awards, including two of the last three. The Broncos remained at the top of the Mid-American Conference in 2009 by finishing tied for second in the MAC and advancing to the MAC Tournament finals for the fifth year in a row. In 2009, Kuhle’s mentoring of the greatest player in MAC history, Kerstin Pahl, came to an end. Pahl ended her career as the MAC career leader in singles wins (114) and overall wins (232) and second in doubles wins (118). Pahl became the first player in the history of WMU and the MAC to win an Intercollegiate Tennis Association national award when she was named as the Cissie Leary Award recipient and she was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic AllDistrict IV At-Large Second Team. She was the second women’s tennis player in a row (Noriko Saruta) to earn the WMU Senior Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. A First Team All-MAC recipient, Pahl was joined by Amanda Moccia on the Academic All-MAC Team, while Emily Dudzik was Second Team All-MAC and Ashley Moccia won the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award. Western Michigan continued its dominance of the Mid-American Conference in 2008 by claiming a fourth-straight undefeated MAC regular season championship (8-0). The Broncos did’nt lost a MAC regular season match between the end of the 2004 season and April 10, 2009, a streak of 38 consecutive victories. The Broncos advanced all the way to the MAC Tournament final before losing a heartbreaker to Buffalo, 4-3. That loss didn’t prevent WMU from finishing the season as the No. 53 team in the country, the highest end-of-season Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking in school history. The Broncos’ ranking earned them a spot in the 60-team field for the 2009 National Team Indoor. The Broncos saw Pahl remain undefeated in MAC singles on her way to only the third MAC Player of the Year award for WMU in school history. She was also named First Team All-MAC, while seniors Priyanka Parekh and Noriko Saruta were Second Team All-MAC. All three also earned Academic All-MAC honors. Records continued to fall at WMU as Saruta set new marks for overall wins (212) and doubles wins in a career (114). Kuhle also added her MAC-leading seventh MAC Coach of the Year honor. The Broncos continued to set the standard for academic success in NCAA Division I women’s tennis as they were named an ITA All-Academic Team for the 14th consecutive season, a number that matches the length of the award’s existence. No other NCAA Division I team has had their team post a 3.20 GPA or higher in all 14 years the ITA has sponsored the award.

Western Michigan claimed its third-straight undefeated MAC regular season championship (8-0) in 2007 and went on to win its second straight MAC Tournament championship and advanced to the 2007 NCAA Tournament, the second consecutive appearance in the national tournament for WMU. Senior Carrie Jeanmaire and Pahl were named First Team All-MAC and Parekh was named Second Team All-MAC. All three were also Academic All-MAC selections as WMU was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the 12th straight season. Marks fell as Jeanmaire reached 204 overall wins and 112 doubles wins to set new school records.

The Broncos have won eight of the last 13 MAC championships (1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) and 11 total (1984, 1990, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) under Kuhle’s direction. Western Michigan also claimed the first two MAC automatic NCAA berths (1999, 2000) since the conference was granted that benefit in 1999. The Broncos have compiled a 459-227 (.669) overall and 173-25 (.874) MAC dualmatch record and have never finished lower than third in the conference under Kuhle’s guidance. Kuhle has helped develop three MAC Players of the Year and four MAC Freshmen of the Year. She has mentored 29 different All-MAC performers and coached 20 different MAC individual or doubles champions. The 2004-05 campaign provided a perfect illustration for WMU’s exceptional level of success under Kuhle. The Broncos claimed the MAC championship after posting a perfect 9-0 league slate, finishing 20-6 overall. The program’s 20 victories marked the fourth-highest total in school history and was the 17th straight year the team compiled a winning record. Two student-athletes were on both the All-MAC and Academic All-MAC teams. WMU also finished the season ranked 55th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, the highest end of season BETSY KUHLE’S YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD ranking ever for the Broncos. Season Overall MAC/Pts. The 2003-04 season was yet another campaign filled with team and individual honors. The Broncos finished second in the league standings and advanced to the tournament semifinals.  Kuhle was named Co-MAC Coach of the Year and a pair of student-athletes claimed All-MAC accolades. Kuhle’s young 2002-03 team went 15-9 overall, 7-2 in the MAC. Five of the eight players had never competed with the Broncos. Kuhle guided Frederika Girsang to the MAC Player of the Year award, the first Western Michigan women’s tennis player to win that award since its creation in 1998. The 2000-01 season will be remembered for a pair of historic achievements. Kuhle won her 300th career match as WMU coach. No other coach in Western Michigan history has won more than 50 matches. Kuhle also guided WMU to its third-consecutive Mid-American

Kathy Beauregard, the Director of Athletics at Western Michigan University, has been involved with the Broncos in several capacities over the course of the past 29 years. She is the second-longest serving athletic director in the Mid-American Conference.

KATHY BEAUREGARD

Beauregard arrived in Kalamazoo as a coach before moving into administration and is entering her 12th season as mentor of one of the top programs in the MAC.

Along with four MAC titles (men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s tennis) in 2003-04, the Broncos also enjoyed an increased level of success in the classroom. WMU’s graduation rate of 83 percent in 2003 ranked eighth nationally and featured a program grade point average of nearly 3.00. On the playing field in 2002-03, the athletics campaign was highlighted by a pair of conference titles in women’s basketball and softball. The men’s basketball team also made a postseason appearance, competing in the National Invitation Tournament. Postseason appearances by the WMU football, volleyball and men’s tennis team highlighted the program’s 2000-01 athletic competition.

WMU athletic facilities have greatly improved under Beauregard’s leadership. The $8-million dollar Bill Brown Football Alumni Center and the $21-million Seelye Athletic Indoor Center have benefited numerous sports teams and provide top-notch facilities for Bronco student-athletes. The locker rooms at Lawson Ice Arena were renovated and completed over the past year and the department continues to raise funds for the Hyames Field Renovation Project. WMU is in the midst of building a two million dollar state-of-the-art facility and Field Turf was also installed at Waldo Stadium during the Summer of 2006.

The 1999-2000 campaign was highlighted by the football team’s West Division title and trip to the MAC Championship. The women’s tennis squad captured the MAC Tourney title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and the women’s basketball squad made its second-consecutive appearance in the WNIT.

Heavily involved in her profession, Beauregard assumed the chair position of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee in 2001, a position which she held for two years. She represented WMU as a member of the NCAA Championships Cabinet and NCAA Football Bowl Certification Committee and currently serves on the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Previously the senior associate athletic director (1993-97), she supervised all revenue sports, the University’s compliance with NCAA rules, academic services, student-athlete welfare, and athletic marketing and communications.

The 2008-09 year saw the Bronco volleyball and men’s tennis programs capture regular season MAC crowns. The volleyball team advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament, while the Bronco football team participated in its second bowl in three seasons and the men’s basketball team won yet another MAC West title.

In just her second year (1998-99), Beauregard provided support which helped the Bronco men’s athletic squads jump from 10th to first place in the Reese Cup standings, giving Western Michigan a share of its first all-sports trophy in 17 years.

Beauregard initially came to WMU in 1979 as head women’s gymnastics coach. In nine seasons (1980-88), she produced two MAC title teams and was twice named the conference’s coach of the year. Beauregard has been active in numerous community service organizations, including Kalamazoo Rotary, the American Heart Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Glowing Embers Girl Scouts Council.

The 2007-08 academic year saw success within the department, on the playing field and in the classroom. WMU Athletics announced the renovation of historic Hyames Field. Heading into the future, the facility will be known as Robert J. Bobb Stadium and will undergo $2.0 million of work over the next year. Renovations to Sorensen Courts, Fran Ebert Field and upcoming work to the men’s basketball locker rooms all highlight Beauregard’s dedication to moving WMU Athletics forward.

Honored by numerous organizations throughout her career, Beauregard was awarded both the Woman of Achievement Award (YWCA) and Athena Award (Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce) in 2002.

Athletically, WMU’s tennis programs found success yet again with both winning a regular season MAC title and the men’s program capturing the tournament title to earn a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Both Dave Morin and Besty Kuhle were named MAC Coaches of the Year for the second-straight season. The men’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs captured MAC West titles during the past athletic season. A pair of Bronco track student-athletes earned All-America honors with Becky Horn earning the nod during the indoor and outdoor seasons and finishing third in the 800m at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In 2000, Beauregard received the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater.

Beauregard is a native of Kalamazoo and graduate of Loy Norrix High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 1979 and a master’s degree from WMU in 1981.

She and husband, Rick, have a 18-year-old son, Brad, who will attend WMU in 2009. Rick retired from Kalamazoo Public Schools after 32 years of service and began Beauregard Home Services in the Fall of 2006.

Beauregard ensured the longevity of WMU’s football and men’s basketball programs by restructuring Bill Cubit’s and Steve Hawkins’ contracts in 2007 and 2008, respectively. WMU Athletics also welcomed Tasha McDowell as the fifth head coach of WMU’s women’s basketball program in 2008. Academically, WMU boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in Anthony Gebhart (first team) and Joe Reitz (second team). Gebhart was the first football representative since 1998. Volleyball, baseball and gymnastics finished in the top 10 among other like programs in the APR and WMU football had the highest APR score in the MAC for the 2006-07 campaign. Overall, 415 student-athletes finished 2007-08 with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. In 2006-07, men’s and women’s tennis not only repeated as MAC Tournament champions but captured regular season titles as well. Both Morin and Kuhle earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. The WMU football team participated in the program’s first postseason bowl game since 1988. The Broncos boasted three NCAA statistical champions in five categories — Ameer Ismail (FB - sacks and tackles for loss); Carrie Moore (WBB - points per game) and Mark Letestu (HOCKEY - freshman scoring and short-handed goals). Western Michigan continued to pursue excellence in the classroom in 2006-07 as 26 student-athletes in 14 sports earned Academic All-MAC status. WMU had five of its programs honored as being in the top-10 percent in their respective sport in the announcement for their excellence in the classroom over the years identified in the most recent APR; baseball, men’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Broncos boasted five academic all-district selections and a pair of academic all-americans in Joe Reitz and Carrie Moore. Moore and Ismail earned All-America status in their respective sports with Moore receiving honorable mention for Kodak All-American and Ismail earning Second Team AP All-American.

In 2005-06, Beauregard oversaw a department that captured the Jacoby Cup Trophy, awarded to the top women’s program in the MAC based on sports standings. WMU has now won the Jacoby and Reese (men’s overall sports award) trophies during Beauregard’s tenure. The Broncos garnered three regular season titles — gymnastics, softball and women’s tennis and two MAC Tournament titles — gymnastics and women’s tennis. Under Beauregard’s direction, WMU also won its 100th MAC title all-time in 2005-06. The 2004-05 athletic campaign continued what has become common place at Western Michigan. Team and individual success began in the fall and continued through the spring, highlighted by a MAC Championship in women’s tennis. The strength of the women’s programs as a group allowed WMU to finish second in the Jacoby Cup.
