Professor Kevin Behrens
Professor Behrens is a Bioethicist and the Director for the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics, who obtained a DLitt et Phil from the University of Johannesburg in 2012, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education from WITS. Prof. Behrens teaches both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Bioethics. He has supervised 19 Masters students to completion (three graduated with distinction), and 6 PhD students. His teaching portfolio reflects his impressive contribution to the field of bioethics. His teaching evaluations are above the University average and most students give positive feedback. He has been extensively involved in curriculum development for bioethics training at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level for the Faculties of Law and Health Sciences.
Professor Behrens is an NRF B2 rated researcher. He has 35 publications in total, of which 10 in international journals and 10 in local journals (first/senior author on 18). He is the first author of seven book chapters, and an h-index of 13. His author impact Beamplot 13 on the 76th percentile in his field. He has received grants from the SAMRC and NRF.
He serves on many University, Faculty and School committees. To name a few, he Chaired the MV AX appeals Committee. He is on the University Advisory committee for Ethics, while also serving as the Deputy Chair of PESC. He participates in a broad range of extra University Institutions including the Research Ethics Committee for the CSIK, COVID Ethics consultant for Lenmed, and Clinical Expert Advisory panel of the SA Council of Medical Schemes. He is a reviewer for several international publishers and journals. He has also served as an NRF reviewer. He is an external examiner for many other Universities at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
