PERSONAL PROFESSOR, School of Clinical Medicine

Professor Abdullah Laher

Professor Laher achieved his MBBCH in 2004 and MMed (with distinction) in 2013. He is a qualified Specialist in both Emergency Medicine and Critical care, who obtained a PhD from WITS in 2021. He has subsequently also completed a number of diplomas, including a Diploma of Allergy, Emergency Medicine and another in Child Health.

Prof. Laher has authored 76 peer-reviewed articles in both national and international journals, of which he is the first/senior author on 36. He has an H index of 10 (Google Scholar) with 358 citations, and 40 refereed conference outputs. In the past five years, he was a keynote speaker in three (3) local conferences, presented at an additional three (3) local and three (3) international congresses, and has been successful in a number of grants.

Prof. Laher teaches both undergraduate GEMP and BCMP students and postgraduate students in Emergency Medicine (Registrars and MSc). He is closely involved in the newly developed Honours program in Emergency Medicine. Associate Professor Laher has supervised 12 MMeds and 8 MSc students to completion. Additionally, supervision of two (2) MMed projects, two (2) MSc qualifications and one (1) PhD student is currently underway. He examines at both undergraduate and postgraduate level (specialist and sub-specialist exams) – MMed and CMSA. He is an instructor in several emergency / resuscitation courses including ACLS, ATLS, PALS, BLS and BASIC courses.

Prof. Laher has served on several School and Department committees, including the MBBCH Undergraduate curriculum committee, the GEMP 3 and 4 committee and the School Graduate Studies and Research Committee. Furthermore, he is the current convener of the MSc in Emergency Medicine, as well as a reviewer for both national and international journals. He participates in clinical outreach locally and Gift of the Givers’ disaster responses both locally and internationally. He is the Chair of the Social and Ethics Committee of the CMSA.
