Deschutes County Road Projects
On Monday, June 6th, construction crews began work on the full depth reclamation of La Pine State Recreation Road, South Century Drive and Spring River Road located south of Sunriver. The limits of construction are as follows: La Pine State Recreation Road: Highway 97 to 5th Street; South Century Drive: Spring River Road to Maxwell Bridge; and Spring River Road: Spring River Bridge to USFS boundary. This project will involve grinding the existing base material (cinders) and pavement to a depth of eight (8) inches, mixing that material with cement and water to create a cement treated base, compacting that base and then paving over that surface with a four (4) inch lift of A.C. pavement. The contract completion date is September 9, 2011. Traffic will be limited to one lane and drivers can expect delays of up to 20 minutes during construction. Hours of operation will be from 7:00am to 7:00pm. Drivers should use alternate routes where possible. Telling It Slant: A Poetry Writing Workshop With Judith Montgomery
The Deschutes Public Library and Second Sunday are offering a free poetry writing workshop with local writer Judith Montgomery. The workshop will take place on Sunday, June 12, from 11:00am until 1:30pm at the Deschutes Public Library Administration Building. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. You can register by calling Lisa McGean at 541-312-1034 or at www.deschuteslibrary. org. Workshop instructor Judith Montgomery is interested in writing from different points of view, and says, “What if Red Riding Hood was told by the wolf? The mother? The hunter?” And she adds, “History, it’s said, is written by the victors—but what if someone else told that tale—or any other? How else might we enter the story?—by telling it slant, telling it from unexpected points of view.” Workshop participants will set the stage for writing by exploring “phantom narrator” poems by Cornelius Eady and contemporary twists on fairytales to open possibilities for alternative narrators—real or imagined bystanders, animals, inanimate objects, and other non-traditional storytellers—to see how differently events may be understood, undercut, and illuminated. Participants will write, at least twice, in response to photographs, paintings, and other artifacts to explore both the apparent and the many hidden stories. Participants are encouraged to bring such artifacts to share. Judith Montgomery is the author of “Passion” (Oregon Book Award for Poetry 2000), “Red Jess” (2006), and “Pulse and Constellation” (2007). Her poems appear in such journals as Ars Medica, The Bellingham Review, Dogwood, and Northwest Review. She lives and writes in Bend, where she is working on two new manuscripts with the aid of fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission and Literary Arts.

Ready, set, go! Where? To the annual Sunriver/La Pine Relay For Life relay on June 25th-26th at the La Pine High School track! This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever, from start to finish. The opening ceremony will be at 10am on the 25th with great entertainment, some solemn words, lots of music, and a very touching survivors lap, with each survivor in a matching shirt. After that, each team (we have about 20) has their area decorated following the yearly theme. There is a great silent auction with good things you couldn’t imagine from golf to food, fun and things for your home. Of course, there’s lunch, then more activities, and in the evening, a beautiful luminaria ceremony... all this time, a member of each team is on the track walking - yes, we do that for 24 hours. Friends Of La Pine Let’s Clean-Up The City The City of La Pine and the Friends of La Pine have rescheduled the “City Clean-up Day” for June 18th. As you may know the “City Clean-Up” of the downtown area (Huntington Road & Hwy. 97) scheduled for Saturday, May 21st was cancelled out of respect for Captain James Palmer of the LRFPD and the fact of possible congestion of the downtown area associated with his memorial service. We are again asking for assistance from community groups and individuals who would like to see the city’s downtown cleaned up for all of us and our expected summer visitors. The plan is based on forming teams with specific tasks assigned, supported by haulers, loaders and the like. The event is scheduled for June 18th, from 8:30 am to 1:00pm, followed by a hamburger/hotdog picnic lunch at the new City Hall parking lot. Here is how it’s planned: at 8:30am, we’ll gather at the new City Hall parking area (6th Street & Hwy. 97), form teams and make assignments. A Note About The EHV-1 Virus There is NO EHV-1 vaccine that is labeled for the prevention of the neurological form of EHV-1. However, several are labeled for the prevention of the respiratory form. This is the “rhino vaccine” that your horse normally gets in its regular vaccine series. It is KEY to note that the rhino vaccines generally have a very short efficacy, even under normal circumstances. If your horse is high risk, or has had exposure to horses or barns that are affected, even if your horse just had a recent “flu/ rhino” vaccine in its spring series, it would be a good idea to consider boosting your horse with a rhino-only vaccine. In many horses that contract EHV-1 viruses, they spike high fevers, become lethargic, have clear runny noses and generally don’t feel well. Many horses only get the respiratory version and clear the virus after a few days and have no further problems with it. However, the neurological form of this disease can be fatal. If you board your horse, or are planning to go to an event that has horses that may have been boarded, it would be wise to cancel these events and check with the boarding facility if they have been checked to see if they have been exposed to the virus.

In the early ‘80s, Marian Lozier gave a class on making a log cabin quilt at COCC in Aspen Alley. From there we started a quilt club calling ourselves, “The Pine Needle Quilters” and we met each week at COCC. From there we met at the old library; we then moved to the old Senior Center and then to the new Senior Activity Center in March of 2005. There is only one of the original members still with the group today - Jean Marable. Years later the name was changed to the “La Pine Needle Quilters“, as the Camp Sherman group had also called themselves the “Pine Needlers”. So as to avoid any confusion, we changed our name. The La Pine Needle Quilters have always extended a warm invitation to any who are interested in learning this craft of quilting, as well as serving our community, while enjoying good fellowship spiced with plenty of laughter. There is no age limit and you do not have to be a senior to participate. No fees are involved. We charge individuals for quilting their quilts and we welcome the opportunity to do it for you. No money is kept for ourselves; it all goes to the Senior Center for the operation of our center, as we are a non-profit organization. We also quilt for various charities. We have made quilts for La Pine Hospice, Habitat For Humanity and Meals On Wheels, along with our raffle quilt for our Quilt Show each year, with all proceeds going to the La Pine Senior Activity Center. Our first Quilt Show was held at Aspen Alley with just a few quilts on display outside. The next one was at the old Parks and Recreation building and then at the old La Pine Library. The next one was at the Russell’s Forest Furniture Store. Other shows were at the new White School recreation building; we were the first to display our quilts there in July during Frontier Days in La Pine. From there our Quilt Shows were at the La Pine Elementary School. Then our new Senior Activity Center was built and now we have our Quilt Show at the center in the month of July during Frontier Day. This years Ouilt Show will be a three-day show - July 2nd, 3rd and 4th, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Hours will be 9am-5pm. Free admission. New Art Exhibit At The La Pine Library Mary Lou Wilhelm - Through July 27
Mary Lou Finch Wilhelm - As I spend time in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico, my paintings reflect the bright colors and enjoyment of the sun. I have been painting since I was in the third grade when my mother built me a desk out of two wooden apple crates and a board. She found an assortment of paints and papers and a wide variety of objects on which I could paint. We had no TV and this kept me busy while my dad rested between jobs. I loved watercolor in high school and found later it was mine to master. I paint with acrylics and do collage, and weaving with found objects. I have painted murals throughout Tillamook County Fair Grounds, Chemult, Crescent, and San Felipe. My fun maps are shown on the newest brochure of the North Klamath County Chamber of Commerce. I do most of my work Plein Aire.
Landscape + Perspective Through the Eyes of Wood & Hockney at La Pine Public Library
In June, the Art Envy series will look at landscape art, and study the works of American artists Grant Wood, who painted “American Gothic” and David Hockney, who is famous for his sun-drenched paintings of California. Participants in this monthly workshop will enjoy a 20-minute presentation on the life and work of Wood and Hockney, and then get creative in a 45-minute drawing workshop taught by local artist Paula Bullwinkel. This discussion will take place at the La Pine Public Library on Thursday, June 9th at 1:00pm. No pre-registration is necessary for this workshop. Supplies are provided and this program is free and open to the public. Local Bend artist Paula Bullwinkel has a master’s degree in art education with a minor in painting. She has participated in numerous one-woman and group shows in New York City and the East Coast area. For 18 years, she was a professional fashion and portrait photographer for Magazines in NYC and London. Paula believes artmaking is best approached with a willingness to take risks, and a keen attitude towards the enjoyment of invention. Donald Bowden
July 26, 1932 - May 28, 2011 Don Bowden, a 36-year resident of La Pine, Oregon, died from complications of cancer on May 28, 2011. He was 78. A Celebration of Life gathering for family and friends will be held at a later date. A private interment will occur at Eagle Point National Cemetery, where Don will be laid to rest next his wife, Alice, who preceded him in death. Donald Thomas Bowden was born on July 26, 1932, in Mount Harris, Colorado, to parents Joseph and Virginia (Langhout) Bowden. After high school, Don joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged after 22 years, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He married Alice Baker on November 15, 1962, in Tonopah, Nevada, and they were married 43 years before her death on August 5, 2006. Don was well known in the La Pine community and helped the town to grow. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Casey; grandson, Shawn Casey; greatgranddaughter, Lauryn Casey; and many friends who loved him. The Build-A-Mountain can drive for Special Olympics High Desert Program local athletes held on Saturday, May 21st raised over $2900 for local athletes in the High Desert Program to participate and compete in sports! Pharmacy & Your Health Lupus: How To Treat And What To Avoid Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune condition which shows up as inflammation and damage to the skin, joints, lungs, kidneys, nervous system, and other organs. The immune system mistakenly attacks the normally functioning body. Persons affected may experience alternating periods of relapse and remission. Common signs and symptoms include weight loss, muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, and fever. The exact cause of SLE is unknown, however, an infection, stress, or surgery could trigger the condition. Certain medications that can make the condition worse, including penicillin, should be avoided. Direct sunlight exposure should also be avoided. A sunscreen with a high SPF is usually recommended. If high cholesterol develops, a lowfat diet is recommended. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used for treatment of muscle aches, joint pain, and fever. Antimalarials, such as hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), decrease the immune system’s attack of the body, and may be prescribed for treatment of muscle, joint, and skin damage. Belimumab (Benlysta) is a new medication recently approved for the treatment of lupus. It works to decrease the amount of abnormal cells responsible for the condition.

The AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS is a nationwide, Oregon DMV accredited, defensive driver program focusing on driving safety within current Oregon laws in an ever-changing driving environment. It focuses a lot on natural-occurring age-related changes in driving safely. This class qualifies for the Oregon Insurance discount law for those over age 55. Each class is 8 hours total, given over two consecutive day 4-hour classes. All drivers are welcome, regardless of age. Student fee is $14 (AARP member $12). The South Deschutes and North Klamath County Groundwater Protection Project Steering committee is inviting people with expertise in groundwater-related issues to provide the committee with information. This month’s expert is Jason Churchill, of Orenco Systems. Orenco develops wastewater management systems for individual properties and small communities. High Lakes Car Club To Host 13th Annual Classic Car Show
The HIGH LAKES CAR CLUB is a group of people who have a common bond, in that they just love old cars! They started with about six people back in 1975 who met at the Gilchrist Restaurant, and later moved the meetings to La Pine for the convenience of more members. The Club now has 50-plus members, who come from as far as Crescent Lake, and still share the passion of owning -- driving, working on, and talking about -- classic cars. But, they also have a great sense of Community, contributing to many local organizations from proceeds of their annual Car Show and annual Swap Meet. They have supported the Boys & Girls Club, La Pine Park & Rec, American Red Cross, La Pine Christmas Baskets, La Pine Senior Center, the Community Kitchen, Family & Community Together, Future Business Leaders of America (La Pine High School), Little Deschutes Grange…and many others. On Saturday, June 25th, they will be hosting their 13th Annual “SHOW-N-SHINE” Classic Car Show. This event will take place at the LA PINE SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER on Huntington Road (next to Bi-Mart), from 9:00am to 4:00pm. You will see all makes and models of classic cars, from 1920s up to 1975 - Lots of ‘50s and ‘60s cars, and classic LIVE MUSIC by Ed Criss & his band! There will be awards and trophies for 1st and 2nd place in all classes, plus Best in Show, People’s Choice, and a prize for the club with the most entries. There will be a “50/50” drawing -- always a big hit! Lots of raffle prizes, including several CASINO PACKAGES, and various types of raffle baskets. This year the specialty raffle will be a 1971 CHEVROLET ¾ TON PICKUP (4-speed, 350 V-8 engine) with tickets at $5 each. Yes…it runs great! Tickets will be sold all day for all raffles, with drawings throughout the day, until all prizes are gone. The Valve Cover Races are a very popular part of the fun for young and old, and this year there will be a separate prize for the children’s division. Just build a race car from a valve cover and you could win! Information and rules for building a valve cover car are in the entry form packet. The “Engine Blow” pool is another event that everyone enjoys, with a cash prize for one lucky person. There will also be show tee shirts and hats for sale. The great “Flame-On Catering” Staff at the Senior Activity Center will offer breakfast from 7:00am to 9:00am. Then for lunch they will have an outdoor barbeque with hamburgers and hot dogs, and a Beverage Court (pop and water). For dessert they will offer pie, plus an ice cream stand. Make Pie a la Mode! This year there will also be a beer and wine garden for the adults. Lots of fun for the whole family -- SEE YOU THERE! The Deschutes County Public Health Advisory Board (PHAB) is currently seeking volunteers to fill several vacant board positions. Citizens who are interested in helping plan, support and evaluate how public health services are delivered and funded in Deschutes County should consider applying. The deadline to apply for PHAB is Friday, June 17. PHAB assists in the development of and advocacy for public policy that promotes and protects the health of Deschutes County citizens. The Board also advocates funding services that help sustain the public health system to improve the health of special populations. PHAB helps in developing priorities for services, helps to guide the Department’s strategic planning efforts and advises the Deschutes County Board of County Commissioners and Health Services Director about decisions related to health programs and services. The Board is in particular need of County residents from Redmond, La Pine and Sisters but welcomes any County resident to apply. PHAB welcomes volunteers to apply who are from the medical or insurance industries and individuals with a background or interest in public health. Advisory Board members are volunteers and are not compensated. Membership requires attendance at monthly meetings and a sincere interest in promoting the health of citizens in Central Oregon. Each Board member term of service is three years in length. We had been working with different non-profits helping them get t-shirts for different events and finally I said, ‘I can do this!’ and we started in the garage. In October 2010, I moved into the new location and the location is really growing!” Who are the main players at Jaybird Ink? “I am the proprietor and I have several friends that help me do the work when needed.”
Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? “I have been here for 18 years now. I moved here after living in California, on the East Coast, and in Arizona. I love the mountainous terrain and what the area has to offer for fishing and recreation and, it’s a small town. I love the small town atmosphere.” What is the potential for growth for Jaybird Ink? “There is lots of potential for growth. With just a little advertising and continuous good work for my customers, people are happy with their products and the business is growing. We are now adding specialty items too, like cups and pens and other ways for our customers to get their name out. It means we can offer these items to our customers so they can buy locally and get what they need.”
What is your business’s great challenge? “Growing at the right pace and breaking into the market when the time is right!” What is the biggest highlight of your career? “I think that it is when I opened up this retail storefront. It was interesting how it happened. Fluffy’s Dog Grooming was here and they were moving and I got here at the right time. It really was perfect timing. I am convinced God had a lot to do with it!”

What do you do to relax? “I go fishing. I went out to Crane Prairie on Tuesday and enjoyed a beautiful morning and was back in the shop before noon!” I asked him if he caught anything. “Not this time!” But he will be back out again soon.
Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: “There really is not anything. I am pretty transparent.” He explained that life, years ago, wasn’t pretty. In the last 4-5 years, life is much better! At that point a friend visiting the shop said, “Of course people don’t know that Jay let’s various groups meet in the store for Bible Studies and recovery meetings.”
In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? I am a Chamber member, I volunteer with SCOOTR and Relay for Life and I am active at Church.”
What are your plans for the future? “I live one day at a time. I will keep on top of Customer Service. I want people to know that my word is gold. I always deliver a few days early because it is all about service above self.” What advice would you give to community leaders? “Right now I am glad that we have local people in office who understand the area. I want them to keep La Pine Local!”
Do you have a mission? “I have a personal mission to grow in my faith and in business; I want to live up to the slogan on the wall: Jaybird Ink is ’your small town screen printer’. I will continue to keep it simple and I want to be the single source solution for specialty advertising and screen printing needs for our town.” Sounds like good words to live by! Thanks, Jay!

Summer Shootout Marble Tournament Registration Is Open
Registration is open for the Summer Shootout Marble Tournament, Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Des Chutes Historical Museum. The event begins at 10am and features tournament play, marble free play throughout the day, lawn games, information on great summer vacation fun around the community, and other fun activities. A special exhibition game will be played by local celebrities for a chance to be crowned the Summer Shootout Marble Tournament Champion. New this year, marble competition will be in two categories: children ages 7 to 14 will compete for a brand new Trek bike from Sunnyside Sports, while high school age and adults can register to compete in the Young at Heart category for other great prizes. Previous marble playing experience not needed! A warm-up and marble ‘shooting’ lessons will be provided prior to beginning of tournament play. Registration is $10 per person. Registration information and forms are available by going to the Museum’s website, www.deschuteshistory.org. Tournament registration can be done up to the morning of the event. Admission to the museum will be free to all participants with the chance to win great prizes. In addition to the marble shootout, families will have the opportunity to visit additional family friendly organizations and learn about summer kid programs around our community. Business Recognized With Safe Sidewalk Awards
This past year, five Deschutes County businesses and two organizations “cemented” their reputations for providing potential customers and pedestrians with a debris and hazardfree environment. On June 22, the businesses will receive Safe Sidewalk Awards from the Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC). For the first time, the award has been expanded to recognize year-round maintenance. The Safe Sidewalk Awards will be presented at the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners Business Meeting held on Wednesday, June 22 at 10:00am. The meeting will be held in the Barnes and Sawyer Rooms (first floor) of the Deschutes County Services Center at 1300 NW Wall Street in Bend. Each year, the award serves as a positive reminder to businesses that promptly removing snow and ice from sidewalks helps ensure the safety of pedestrians and attracts customers. Along with the snow and ice of winter, there are many other hazards that are present year-round that need attention like low hanging vegetation, irrigation overspray, and deteriorating sidewalks. All of these conditions can create challenging and often dangerous conditions on sidewalks in commercial areas. 2010-2011 winners include: City of Bend Businesses - Miller Lumber, US Bank at NE 3rd and Olney, Lee Business Complex, Sunriver Owners Assoc., Public Works Dept.; City of Redmond Businesses - The Hen’s Tooth Restaurant, The Antlers Hotel; City of La Pine Businesses - no nominations received; City of Sisters Agency - Sisters School District.
