TELL ‘EM YOU SAW IT IN WISE BUYS!

LOCAL FISHING REPORT FOR AUG. 27-SEPT. 2, 2019 A reminder to be sure and check the regulations as there have been changes. Wear your life jackets on the water. Here is a rundown: Paulina: Trolling is still best on north and east end of lake at about 35 feet to 45 and will stay about that depth for the rest of the season. Smaller dodgers best. Put a set of mini-flashers in front of your small dodger for better action. Kokes are quickly headed to pre-spawn and more are showing color. Orange has been the “go to” color, but, with the pre-spawn hormone changes, head back into the pinks. Slow the troll a bit to between 1.1 and 1.4. The strain of Eagle Lake rainbows seems to be doing well in reducing the number of chubs. East Lake: Final push of the season. After Labor Day you can own the lake. But the fish will get more aggressive until about the third week in September. Still best trolling at 40 feet. Don’t be surprised to pick up a nice brown or bow while trolling for kokes. Super bright green lures and attractors first thing in the morning, then go all pink or watermelon. Contrary to popular method, troll watermelon apex at about 1.0 MPF with about a 28 to 24 inch leader. The bite is on early, and slows by 8am, but continues throughout the day – just much slower. Kokes 14-17 inches. Tuna oil scent. Some kokes will have totally turned, and others will still be bright. Catch and release the turned ones. Wickiup: 16% full. This is just half of the traditional average water level for this date. Inflow at 293 CFS, outflow at 1380 CFS. Beach launch. This is a great time to collect fishing gear that has been caught on the tree stumps. Also, if you have a good 4x4 you may want to consider driving to the main channel and tossing metal for browns and bows. And don’t forget you have a 4x4 for a reason. Have a tow rope available for yourself or a new and grateful friend. ALSO: The Deschutes River arm is closed from ODFW marker at Gull Point to ODFW markers near Sheeps Bridge from September 1 to April 21. Keep yourself and your dogs out of there so the few kokanee we have can spawn without disturbance to the redds. Crescent Lake: 64% and dropping a bit. No new reports. Crane Prairie: 71% full and dropping 4% per week. Fishing is steady to slowing down. Warmer water results in those wonderful hatches. Fish average 10-13 inches with a few at 16-18. Algae showing, with small to medium floating piles. Be sure to stop by the resort for a free map of the channels. Damsel fly imitations are traditionally reliable from now on. Catch and release non-clipped ‘bows. Try a flat fish in spotted frog. Also, big bows will hit a bass plug. A black wooly bugger is standard for this time of year. Some weather models have the cold weather starting in late October, when the fishing really picks up again. If there is ice on the ramps, hit Crane Prairie!! Season ends October 31. North and South Twin: Planters, but, hey, they are fish and plenty of fun in a peaceful, no-motor setting. Fish are hungry. Recent trophy trout plants have livened things up a bit. Next trout plant September 2-6 with 500 trophy each. Take a kid fishing, maybe even grandpa, too. Odell Lake: Blue Green algae warning lifted August 14. The warning could go back into effect at any time. Call 971-673-0482 and press 4 for the latest info. This is the time of year when you take your best guess. They can be bunched up at the west end, scattered in the middle, or roving near Sunset on the east. Latest reports have the kokes at 45-60 feet. Kokes here tend to be late spawn type, so good fishing will extend into mid-September. Season ends October 31. Little Cultus: Brook trout season slowing due to hot weather raising water temps. Troll any dark nymph. I prefer the fly and bubble method, with just a bit of weight on the front of the fly to get it down a couple of feet or deeper. Best fishing very early morning or late afternoon to evening. Fishing will vastly improve when the cold weather sets in and the trout need to gorge for winter. Continue past Little Cultus on Waldo Lake Road (NF 600) to Taylor Lake. Rough going but fatties on a fly await. Toss a bubble with a 2 foot leader to fly and it will make the drive worth it. Lava Lake: A reminder to bring your own water until the drinking water can be re-certified safe. River/flows: Little Deschutes at La Pine: 115 CFS. A great time to float from Leona Park to Rosland Park. The relaxing three hour tour. Trout Plants: Cultus: August 19-23: 2500 Legals; North and South Twin September 2-6: 500 trophy each. No more local plants this year. This week’s fishing food for thought: “Everything I say is my opinion and does not necessarily reflect the opinion of other less informed individuals. Also, all characters depicted are purely fictional, unless of course they are real. In my many years I have finally learned not to argue with a man carrying a water buffalo. Finally, be patient and calm - for no one can catch fish in anger.” by Gary Gordon Fish With Gary Tackle Co. www.fishwithgary.com 541-536-1002
