New Legislative Maps Will Bring New Faces to Wisconsin Legislature
Some of those new faces could be pro chiropractic. Writing about legislative redistricting can feel like a political science term paper. It can be a bit dry for even the casual political observer. So here it is in a nutshell...
The new legislative maps signed by Governor Evers creates more competitive legislative seats across Wisconsin. This could be a good thing for the chiropractic profession if we play our cards right this election season.
As they say in the business, there is a lot to unpack in that statement. Let’s start by directing you to the WisPolitics links below where you can pore over a very good analysis of the new maps and the impacts on each Assembly and Senate district in the state.
JUNE 1, 2024
Key Deadline for Partisan Races in Wisconsin
The filing deadline for candidates to put their names on the ballot for partisan office was June 1, 2024. This means, barring legal challenges to the signatures on their nomination papers, the candidates in each Assembly, Senate, congressional and US Senate race are set. Those with primaries will be settled on August 13th, 2024. The general election in Wisconsin, which will include a Presidential race, is November 5th, 2024.
Having just gotten done attending all major party candidate role out events, both parties are bullish about their prospects of having majority control of their respective legislative chambers come January of 2025.
Our Top Campaign Priority
At this point in time, our top campaign priority is helping Rep. Clint Moses (R - Menomonie), the first chiropractor elected to the Wisconsin Legislature get reelected.
Rep. Moses is the current Chair of the Assembly Health Committee. He has been a leader in health care policy and a champion for chiropractic issues during his two sessions in the Legislature. His district was previous a solid Republican district but the new maps have made it more competitive, particularly in a high turnout Presidential year. It is critical the we help Rep. Moses get re-elected. Please consider giving to ChiroStrong and marking your donation for Rep. Moses.
Regardless of who has partisan control of the Wisconsin Legislature in 2025, we have to have strong advocates helping us protect and expand access to chiropractic in Wisconsin. In the end it comes down to financial resources (doesn’t everything). We only have so much in the ChiroStrong fund to support only so many candidates.
If you are currently giving to ChiroStrong, thank you and please keep giving and authorizing contributions. If you are not giving, please consider making a contribution today. Learn More Here >>

Protect Your Profession. Invest in your Future.
According to the 2023 Business & Economic trends survey results, the 3rd highest valued benefit of WCA membership is Legislative advocacy, yet only 5.3% of members are actively contributing to the ChiroStrong Political Conduit.
What is ChiroStrong?
ChiroStrong is a state political conduit fund administered by the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association (WCA). Through ChiroStrong, Wisconsin Chiropractors can support elected officials and candidates who are true advocates of the chiropractic profession. Every dollar you contribute goes to your personal ChiroStrong account, which you control. While the WCA will recommend specific candidates to support, no money leaves your account without your authorization.
You are in Control of Your Donation
Whether you contribute a small or large amount, you are 100% in control of where your dollars are spent – as we must authorize each amount with your approval ahead of time. If you’d like to get involved and contribute to the WCA conduit check out our ChiroStrong website.
Chiropractic has a rich history of flexing its political muscle to advance the profession and expand patient access to chiropractic care. Chiropractors and their patients are a powerful force when we get organized and motivated.
Well, its time to get motivated again! Be a sustaining contributor today!
For many years, WCA has asked all practicing chiropractors in Wisconsin to complete three surveys each year. These surveys allow us to provide important data to the chiropractic community.
Full survey results are provided to WCA members as part of their member benefit. In this issue, we will share some of the results; however, the full results are available on our website using your member login.

Random Audits Announcement
The Office for Civil Rights are starting random audits this year. For years we have been discussing Cyberattacks, Hipaa Complaints, miss handling of patient information, etc. These have been on the rise and pose a threat to offices that lack a “defensible” HIPPA program, the biggest potential threats are RANDOM audits that demand an office produce copies of your most recent Risk Analysis, ISARA and or one or more of your Documented Policies, Procedures and Training.
The Office for Civil Rights has stated publicly at the Washington DC Hipaa and Cybersecurity symposium that they intend to audit every single doctor’s office by completing random audits.
If you have any additional questions or are looking for additional Hipaa resources, please contact Tammy McKeown, CT at wcahelp@wichiro.org
The WCA Insurance Advocacy Committee is gathering data from WI chiropractors on issues they are experiencing with commercial insurance payers.
This information will be used by the committee to develop appropriate strategies to address these challenges. Results will be used in full compliance with all relevant anti-trust laws.

Medical Marvel Massage Chairs
We designed the Medical Marvel Massage Chair specifically to address the needs of the Chiropractors. It was designed in concert with what Chiropractors needed and wanted.
Chiropractors who have implemented the Medical Marvel Massage Chair into their practice by having their patients sit in the chair prior to an adjustment are reaping tremendous rewards and benefits!
When you, as a Chiropractor, adjust patients with their muscles and joints already warmed up, it is much easier and quicker to adjust them. As a result, you see more patients and you are not working as hard when you adjust them. You are also making considerably more money. We have Chiropractors who have recovered their entire investment, ROI, in as little as six weeks.
But most importantly your patient will have far better results.
Medical Marvel Massage Chairs has been in business for 20 years. We manufacture and distribute the finest massage chairs in the industry that can handle people up to 375 lbs. and 6 ft 6”. New Systematic Review Shows Chiropractic Care Leads to Lower Healthcare Costs for Spinal Pain
by Clinical Compass, clinicalcompass.org
In a recent systematic review study by Farabaugh et al. featured in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies, compelling findings underscored the value of chiropractic care for patients experiencing spine-related musculoskeletal pain. The study revealed that individuals who initially sought treatment from a chiropractor saw a significant reduction in healthcare costs compared to those under medical management alone.
“Spinal pain patients who consulted chiropractors as first providers needed fewer opioid prescriptions, surgeries, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, specialist referrals and injection procedures.”
These findings prompt a reconsideration of healthcare policies and benefit designs. Given the growing recognition of chiropractic care's role in the medical landscape, it is increasingly evident that chiropractors integrated into healthcare teams could yield substantial financial savings for patients and systems. To align with the evolving trends in healthcare, it may be advantageous for U.S. healthcare organizations and governmental agencies to explore avenues for reducing barriers to accessing chiropractic services. By embracing this shift, we can enhance patient outcomes
while optimizing healthcare expenditure for management of musculoskeletal pain.

During her undergrad years as an Iowa State University swimmer, she witnessed how her teammates and friends benefitted from physical therapy and decided to pursue that field, like her mother.
A major appeal of physical therapy for Rachel is the length of time she gets to spend with each patient. “I love being able to be with a patient for a whole hour, getting to know them,” she said.
As with chiropractic education, PT education evolved between when mother and daughter were in school. “The fundamentals haven’t changed, but the training and degree structure have,” said Rachel, who obtained her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Midwestern University.
“When I was in school, you got a bachelor’s degree,” said Kari. “Then the focus shifted to a Master’s, and now it’s a DPT. My education during college was more basic, with CEs and learning on the job after graduating. Rachel got more of that education during school. It’s neat to see the evolution.”
Rachel did one of her 12-week clinical rotations at her parents’ clinic, during which she moved back home.
“That gave me the unique opportunity to talk with my mom, and we bounced ideas off each other,” she said.
While it’s not uncommon for chiropractors to have children follow them into the business, the nature of physical therapy jobs makes this less common among PTs.
PTs traditionally worked in hospitals, Kari said, rather than operate an independent business where their kids could see the day-to-day operations.
“These days, physical therapists and chiropractors have some cross-over, which is a beautiful thing for patients.”
Chris and Kari’s son, Jake, runs the financial operations of the practice. “He writes all our paychecks,” Chris said with a smile.
In his role, Jake also follows in a family member’s footsteps. “Jake came in and took over for his grandfather. My dad was doing all that, and he was looking to retire,” said Chris.
In addition to their Neenah office, in 2021 the Resch family opened a Grand Chute location in collaboration with
orthopedist Dr. ET Mejia. In 2024, operations expanded again when Madi began seeing patients two mornings a week inside Evolve Fitness in Appleton. “That’s really full circle, because my parents started out inside a health club,” Madi noted.
Work-Life Balance
For any family in business together, managing the professional dynamic while maintaining a healthy family life can be a challenge. “The kids were always watching, observing,” Kari said. “We’re so passionate about what we do, and they saw us in action.”
“My parents did a good job weaving their personal and professional lives together,” Madi said.
Rachel agreed. “They integrated work and life. I thought that’s how everyone saw things—that work and life isn’t a grind. Later, I realized not everyone has that work-life balance.”
One family tradition was attending the WCA fall convention in the Wisconsin Dells. “We always tried to make that a family gathering,” said Chris. “It’s a great way for WCA families to get together.”
Today, when the family gathers outside of work, “We always say we’re not talking about work, but we end up talking about work,” laughed Kari. “Someone gets an idea—we should host this, or here’s a CE idea. It’s usually fun and exciting things.”
“Our parents did a good job,” Rachel said. “We talk to each other all the time outside of work. We’re all friends, even our spouses.”
Looking Ahead
Leading by example, the Resches hope to inspire collaboration in others. “We all have our strengths and can tap into each other’s experience and expertise,” Chris said.
Right now, the family is focused on enjoying and growing what they’ve built together.
As the direction of health care shifts toward corporate chains, “Family chiropractic offices like this are not as common,” Kari said.
“Our roots are here,” said Chris. “We have a good time working together. We want to enjoy the moments.”

Empowering Health Through Chiropractic
Dr. Patrick Flynn, The Wellness Way
As Doctors of Chiropractic, we are educated with a unique perspective. This perspective, based on the philosophy of chiropractic, is an often-missing link in the health restoration our nation and the people of the world need. Unfortunately, not all of our patients know how valuable we are and what we can offer them as they walk through our doors and suffer from so many conditions for which they don’t even consider our help. But to be fair, not all chiropractors recognize the potential they have, either.
According to the CDC, today, six out of ten Americans are diagnosed with a chronic illness, and four out of ten suffer from two or more. The keys to helping many of these lifealtering concerns are possible with chiropractic based on the 3Ts. We know that toxins, traumas, and thoughts can be the most damaging factors to a healthy, optimally functioning body. Knowing which influences are causing interruptions in physiological functions, organs, and systems creates a clear path forward. With that information, we can help patients make the necessary changes to support their innate ability to heal and restore that function. What is the clinical application? Appropriate testing.
If we get back to the basics and take our rightful place in the world of health and health restoration, we can help our patients see the clinical results they are hoping for—the ones the medical community may have told them there is no hope for. How do we do that?
Clinical results cannot be argued with, nor can proper, comprehensive testing and data. As chiropractors, we utilize neurological testing while adjusting patients to address traumas. We also have the ability to use testing to address another T: toxins. Toxins can be attributed to deficiencies or, most often, overexposure and excess, leading to toxicity. If the body isn’t supported to release the stress caused by toxins, we are missing the boat. Sometimes, these toxicities are environmental; other times, it can literally be an excess or deficiency in biological compounds such as hormones or infections and subsequent immune responses. What happens when we remove that response? The body can begin to function as it should and repair. The immune response is the body’s last line of defense, especially when it comes to food. Those responses need to be taken seriously.
One of the simplest ways to address some of the toxins people may be encountering is to look at their food allergies and environmental toxins. If they are exposed to something daily that is triggering an immune response, of course the body will need to adapt and respond. Many people try to play off any allergy that isn’t an IgE response as a “sensitivity.” I don’t think we can accurately say that. That protein is triggering an immune response. What is an allergy? According to Mayo, “Allergies occur when the body reacts to a foreign substance.” Is an IgG response a reaction? Yes! It is triggering an immune response and needs to be addressed as such.
Many people, doctors included, don’t realize they have access to the testing they need; they may not even know what they need to have tested. In reality, that testing is simply not offered through the typical channels of medicine because it isn’t either covered by insurance, associated with a treatment code that can be billed, or correlated with an approved drug to manipulate the physiology related to it. Also, I can’t offer a generalized “protocol” here. Every individual is so unique in their physiology, we can’t attempt to treat patients in a one-sizefits-none standard of care or protocol in order to fit insurance codes. This is where chiropractors can stand apart. But it takes a unique perspective and being willing to step out of the box that insurance and the current medical model has put us in.
So, what is the clinical application?
By going with independent labs or suggesting they ask their MD to have specific markers run, we can help our patients find the answers they are looking for and the hope they may have lost. We can support their bodies to return to the best state of health possible for them through chiropractic and structural adjustments, proper nutritional support, and managing stress levels. At The Wellness Way, we have seen tremendous clinical results for our patients when addressing these toxicities or deficiencies in our patients. Every day, we see people who’ve been told there are no other options than surgery or drugs for their concerns, whether it be chronic illnesses, autoimmune concerns, or even environmental or food allergies. Knowing how to test, what to test, and how to support the body from there can help these patients take back control of their health and restore chiropractic’s role in the health restoration process.
What if we stood in the gap for our patients and offered them back control of their health and decisions? What if we educated them and gave them the resources they needed? What if we united as a profession, stood shoulder to shoulder, and raised the perception of our practice? We could not only change lives but also the future of healthcare. It’s time for this paradigm shift, and we believe it can start right here in Wisconsin!
If you have additional questions about how we take this highly personalized approach, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We can be better together! As chiropractors, we are educated differently, we think differently, and we do health differently.

OUR DEEPEST Sympathy
Christopher Robert Anderson, D.C.
March 16, 1983 - June 5, 2024
Christopher Robert Anderson, D.C., 41 of Reedsburg passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in his sleep on Wednesday, June 5th 2024. He was born on March 16, 1983, at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center to Dr. Robert and Edna Anderson. Growing up in Reedsburg, he attended St. Peter’s Lutheran School then graduated in 2001 from Reedsburg High School. During his youth, he was involved with theater and the arts as well as Boy Scouts, reaching the rank of Eagle Scout. He received an Associate’s Degree in Art’s and Science from U.W. Baraboo in 2003, a Bachelor of Science in Biology from U.W. Madison then later U.W. Milwaukee in 2006. Chris followed in his father’s footsteps when he graduated with a Doctorate from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2011, where he earned innumerable awards and honors. He then joined his father at Anderson Chiropractic Clinics, later taking over the business and growing it into Anderson Integrative Clinics and Motiv8 Children’s Therapy. He traveled all over the country to teach clinicians and their teams how to reach their maximum potential and he imparted his knowledge in ways that no one else could: jumping on tables, dancing, and even wearing wigs for his audiences.
Over the years, Chris held multiple advanced certifications such as Medical Compliance Specialist, Certified Insurance Consultant, Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, DOT Physician Examiner, and many more. He was especially proud of his international outreach through the Palmer Clinic Abroad Program, where he provided care to underprivileged patients in many countries including Vietnam, India, South America and Figi. In 2023 Chris was honored as the “Chiropractor of the Year” from the Chiropractic Society of Wisconsin; “his energy and passion touched everyone who had the privilege to know him.”
Above all, Chris enjoyed supporting the Reedsburg community as a whole, being an active member in Rotary Club, Boy Scouts Troop 44, Reedsburg Masonic Lodge, Reedsburg United Way, Freedom Fest, and more. He was always finding time in his busy schedule to volunteer at almost every community event including Brat Bash and Dash, Butterfest, and no United Fund Radio Auction was complete without him MCing.
Chris’s true love was travel and the outdoors. He enjoyed multiple trips within the United States as well as worldwide; his favorite places being Hawaii, Fiji, Paris, and visiting his chosen family in Arizona, Mississippi, and Door County. When not traveling or working, you could find him hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, boating, and swimming all of which with his fourlegged children Madison then Dutchess. Where ever Chris was, there was always a camera on the ready, and many have been blessed to see his photographs on display in both the Mauston and Reedsburg offices, if not being gifted with one or two of their own. Chris leaves behind a legacy of kindness and dedication to his family and friends. His imprint is lasting in the Chiropractic profession as well as the Reedsburg community, but spreads far beyond.
With traveling all over the country to teach almost every other weekend Chris gave tremendous attention and love to his “travel family”. Even the Delta Air lines agents knew him at a glance and were always ready to give him a hug and welcome. He treated each one of his co-speakers with unbelievable respect and unselfishly poured out his love of life, so each one felt elevated every time they met. Chris always thought of others first, willfully putting their needs above his. He treasured their companionship above all else. Chris joyfully developed a complex family tree, putting his friends as distant cousins, uncles, a twin, a dad, a work wife, a stepbrother and several sisters. No one was far from his thoughts for very long and everyone has a story of how he went above and beyond to help or serve them. He has forever changed each and every one of the thousands of doctors and their staff he had the opportunity to teach. His laughs and smiles will live on in their hearts and minds forever. We will all miss our beloved Chris.
He is survived by his parents: Dr. Robert and Edna Anderson of Reedsburg, brother: Nicholas (Trisha) Anderson of Reedsburg, nephew and niece: Alexander and Savannah, many aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as his many chosen godchildren and chosen family. He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents: Raymond and Phyllis Anderson, maternal grandparents: Roger and Hester Nelson.
In Lieu of flowers, the family STRONGLY requests all donations be made to a memorial fund being established in Chris’s name for future Scholarships. Checks can be made out to: the Dr. Chris Anderson Memorial fund.

Governor Evers Signs MA Delegation Bill into Law
A collaboration between the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association (WCA) and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) paid dividends last month when Governor Evers signed into law Senate Bill 788 relating to the delegation of adjunctive services to a medical assistant.
This new law, Wisconsin Act 186, clarifies the requirements under which a chiropractor can delegate adjunctive services to a person trained as a medical assistant. Prior to WI Act 186, chiropractors could not delegate adjunctive services to a person trained as an MA unless that person obtained a chiropractic technician certificate from the State of Wisconsin.
The new law eliminates this redundant requirement while still requiring the delegating chiropractor to ensure proper oversight and training.
“This new law gives chiropractors, particularly those working in hospital settings, more flexibility in how they staff their clinics,” said John Murray, WCA Executive Director. “We also appreciate the partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin and their commitment to access to high-quality chiropractic care within their SpineCare program.”

OWhat the FTC Noncompete Rules Mean for Chiropractors
by Barbara Zabawa, JD, MPH | Center for Health and Wellness Law, LLC
n May 7, 2024, the Federal Register published the final rules regarding the use of noncompete clauses in contracts. These rules take effect September 4, 2024, unless a court vacates them beforehand. Thus far, there are three court cases challenging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) noncompete rules. The lead case is Chamber of Commerce for the United States of America et al. v. Federal Trade Commission et al., 6:24-cv-00148, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, filed April 24, 2024. The plaintiff in that case is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and it has asked the Texas Eastern District Court to prohibit the FTC from enforcing the noncompete rules and to postpone the effective date. The Texas court has indicated that it can resolve the lawsuit before the September 4, 2024, effective date. More than likely this case is on its way to the United States Supreme Court.
At the heart of the lawsuits challenging the FTC noncompete rules are arguments that the FTC does not have the authority to issue the noncompete rules, that the rules are unconstitutional, that the FTC is unconstitutionally structured, and that noncompetes are necessary to safeguard specialized training.1
So, what do the noncompete rules say, and what does it mean for chiropractic clinics?
It means that after September 4, 2024, your clinic cannot subject employees or independent contractors to terms or policies that effectively prohibit or penalize that worker from working somewhere else or operating a competing business after they stop working for your business. These terms may include noncompetition agreements, nondisclosure agreements, or nonsolicitation agreements. Whether a wellness business can use these types of “restrictive covenants” will depend on how broadly they are worded. For example, a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) that bars a worker from disclosing in a future job any information that is “usable in” or “relates to” the industry in which they work would be unenforceable2. Another NDA that the FTC views as unenforceable is one that bars a worker from disclosing any information or knowledge the worker may obtain during their employment whatsoever, even if that information is publicly available3. Two other types of restrictive covenants that may no longer be enforceable after September 4, 2024 are non-solicitation agreements (prohibiting workers from stealing their former employer’s workers or clients/patients) and TRAPs, which are agreements in which the worker agrees to pay the employer for purported training expenses if the worker leaves their job before a certain date4
Whether any of these restrictive covenants “functions to prevent” a worker from getting a new job or starting their own business will be evaluated on a “case-by-case basis.” After looking at all the facts, if the restrictive covenant prevents a worker from accepting other work or starting a business, or penalizes them for doing so, the restrictive covenant will not be enforceable. An example of an unenforceable TRAP would be requiring a wellness worker to repay all they have earned plus pay the wellness company’s future profits, attorney fees and arbitration costs if that worker decides to leave before a certain time period expires5. However, asking a former worker to repay a bonus they received if they leave before a certain period of time would be permitted as long as the wellness business did not impose any other conditions (such as dictating who the worker could work for or whether they could start their own business)6 .
It should be noted that restrictive covenants do not have to be in a signed agreement for the noncompete rules to apply: the restrictive covenants could be oral or in a written policy, such as an employee manual7
Different Treatment between Workers and Senior Executives
Chiropractic clinics that have senior executives with existing noncompetes can keep those in place, even after September 4, 2024. But, after that date, such clinics may not impose noncompetes on senior executives. For all other workers (who are not senior executives), all existing and future noncompetes will be unenforceable after September 4, 2024. Who are senior executives? They are workers who:
• Are in a policy-making position that controls significant aspects of the wellness business AND
• Received total annual compensation of at least $151,1648

Laser Therapy for Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Dr. Rob Silverman, DC, MS, CNS, CCN, CSCS, CKTP, CES, CIISN, DACBN, DCBCN, HKC, FAKTR
The use of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) across three different wavelengths simultaneously is an exciting new development for treating mitochondrial dysfunction. When the laser light contains wavelengths from the red, green, and violet portions of the spectrum, all phases of the mitochondrial energy generation process are stimulated.
How the Mitochondria Make Energy
Every cell in the body—except red blood cells—contains many mitochondria. These tiny powerhouses generate cellular energy through adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which powers nearly all of the body’s essential functions. Cells that need more energy, such as those in the heart, liver, muscles, and brain, contain more mitochondria. Liver cells contain one to two thousand mitochondria per cell; each heart cell contains about five thousand mitochondria. In addition to the intracellular mitochondria, free-floating mitochondria circulate in the bloodstream. 1
The process of converting glucose to ATP occurs within each mitochondrion's folded inner membrane. It begins when glucose from the cell enters the mitochondrion through the structure’s outer membrane. The glucose is then metabolized in the mitochondrial matrix by the citric acid cycle (the Krebs cycle) into breakdown products (chiefly pyruvate). These products then move into the inner membrane of the mitochondrion and the process of converting them to ATP begins.
Through a series of redox reactions, the nutrients are moved along an electron transport chain (ETC) through five protein components. At each of the first four stages along the chain, the process produces free energy that finally drives the phosphorylation of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to ATP in the fifth and final complex of the chain, ATP synthase.
In the end, one glucose molecule has been converted to 36 to 38 molecules of ATP, along with carbon dioxide and water as byproducts.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction: Disrupting Energy Production
When mitochondrial energy production moves smoothly, the body has ample energy for normal functions, growth, and adaptation. When the process is disrupted, however, mitochondrial dysfunction sets in. Energy levels drop, oxidative stress increases, cell signaling is disrupted, and inflammation occurs. The lowered ATP levels can lead to fatigue, hypersensitivity, and chronic pain. 2 Chronically impaired mitochondrial function can even lead to fatal organ failure. 3
Mitochondrial dysfunction occurs when the mitochondria aren’t working efficiently.
Fundamental causes of mitochondrial dysfunction include:
Oxidative stress. Energy production within the mitochondria generates high levels of free radicals, particularly reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can overwhelm antioxidant levels, leading to damage from oxidative stress, impaired function, and inflammation.
Viral illness. Mitochondrial dysfunction caused by viral illness is a significant underlying cause of chronic illness, including long COVID. Viruses can damage the mitochondria's delicate internal structures and lead to increased production of free radicals and the cascade of damage this causes. The mitochondria can no longer produce energy efficiently, leading to chronic and often severe fatigue.
Environmental factors. Exposure to environmental toxins, such as heavy metals, pesticides, and certain drugs, can disrupt the integrity of the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes. They can also interfere with enzyme activity and damage mitochondrial DNA replication and repair mechanisms. Standard OTC and prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin, ibuprofen, indomethacin, and diclofenac, can inhibit the electron transport chain and impair mitochondrial function.
Age-related changes. Overall mitochondrial function declines with age, partly from the accumulated damage of oxidative stress and decreased efficiency of repair mechanisms. Age-related mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to age-related diseases and declines in overall cellular function. 4
Sedentary lifestyle. Lack of physical activity leads to lower production of oxidative enzymes, more damage from free radicals, and reduced electron transport chain activity.
Metabolic disorders. Prediabetes, diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome can impair mitochondrial function by disrupting glucose breakdown, damaging the mitochondrial membranes, and increasing oxidative stress and free radical damage.
Cell Danger Response
When the mitochondria become dysfunctional from age, lifestyle, and metabolic disorders, all systems in the body, including the immune system, operate at suboptimal levels. A
Laser Therapy - Cont.
poor lifestyle that leads to suboptimal mitochondrial function also leads to chronic low-level inflammation, which causes further mitochondrial dysfunction and a self-perpetuating loop of fatigue and additional damage. If a viral illness such as COVID or RSV is added to the already dysfunctional system, the immune system is less equipped to fight it.
When illness strikes, the mitochondria enter the cell danger response (CDR) mode. CDR is defined as “the evolutionarily conserved metabolic response that protects cells and hosts from harm. It is triggered by encounters with chemical, physical, or biological threats that exceed the cellular capacity for homeostasis. 5”
Mitochondrial activity switches from energy production to cell defense in the cell danger response to support the immune system. In other words, the mitochondria downregulate and divert their energy to the immune system.
When the mitochondria switch over to cellular energy production that favors immune defense, little energy is left for other functions. This is the underlying cause of fatigue that usually accompanies any illness. Healthy mitochondria have enough reserve to continue generating energy, although at a reduced level, during an illness. When the mitochondria function well, energy levels return to normal after the body fights off the infection.
In some cases, however, the danger response in the mitochondria doesn’t switch off. The cells can’t turn off the danger response until they receive signals from the adaptive immune system telling them the danger is past. If the signal isn’t given or received, the cell danger response remains active and blocks the return to homeostasis and normal energy levels.
The cell danger response can be modulated with an antiinflammatory diet, exercise, and stress management. Supplements that can help include vitamin D and zinc to support immune function and adaptogens such as ashwagandha. Also essential are prebiotics and probiotics for a healthy gut microbiome.
Low-Level Laser Therapy for Mitochondrial Dysfunction
The electron transport chain in the mitochondria uses highenergy electrons and hydrogen ions to convert ADP into ATP. 6
Because the process is so energetic, nonthermal laser light can stimulate it and improve the function and stability of the mitochondria by delivering highly energetic photons of energy into the cell. When photons of visible light energy from a nonthermal laser strike certain atoms in the inner membrane of the mitochondria, where the energy transport chain occurs, the energy may push an electron from that atom to a higher energy level, where an electron acceptor in the electron transport chain can pick it up.
Photons in the visible laser light spectrum are believed to affect complexes I, II, III, and IV of the electron transport chain. Some wavelengths used in low-level laser therapy are particularly effective at different points along the electron transport chain. Using the correct wavelengths is critical to achieving an excellent therapeutic response.
Laser light in the 400 to 450 nm (violet) range stimulates Complexes I and II. Complex I is the electron transport chain's largest and most complicated complex. 7 The reactions here are rate-limiting—any dysfunction at this point will affect energy production as it moves through the downstream complexes. Laser therapy using the violet wavelength supplies sufficient photonic energy to trigger the needed electron jumps to make complexes I and II function more efficiently. 8
Complex III is stimulated by laser light in the 500 to 560 nm (green) range. Laser light in this range can stimulate the processes related to oxidative phosphorylation at the ATP synthase complex, the final step in the production of ATP. 9
Complex IV is stimulated only by laser light in the 600 to 670 nm (red) range.
By stimulating the activity of the ETC complexes, the ratelimiting mechanism for ATP is restored, and ATP production within the mitochondria is increased. In addition, the freefloating mitochondria in the bloodstream absorb photon energy and disperse throughout the body, allowing photon energy to have a systemic effect on sites away from the laser application site.
Restoring Mitochondrial Function
When mitochondria become dysfunctional, their normal function can often be restored with a combination of lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements, and low-level laser therapy.
Lifestyle Changes
Numerous studies have shown that exercise is a highly effective way to improve mitochondrial function. Exercise helps enhance mitochondrial health by increasing the activity of the genes that produce mitochondrial proteins and enzymes and decreasing oxidative stress. In overweight, sedentary people, exercise increases the total number of mitochondria in muscle cells and increases the production of mitochondrial oxidative enzymes, accompanied by improvements in insulin resistance. 10 Exercise to improve mitochondrial function is also valuable for many chronic diseases, including heart failure and peripheral artery disease. Improved mitochondrial function from exercise may also play a critical role in preventing cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease and in maintaining muscle mass in older adults. 11
Supplements
The production of ATP in the mitochondria relies on several enzymes and coenzymes to function correctly. In the cell,
Laser Therapy - Cont.
glycolysis and the Krebs cycle need the coenzyme NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) to complete the reactions and break down glucose before it enters the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. Complex I also requires NAD to function properly. NAD+ is the oxidized form of NAD; NADH is the reduced form. Within the mitochondria, they are the two sides of the redox reactions that shuttle electrons along the electron transport chain. Individuals may be low on NAD because of low intake of niacin, a B vitamin that is a crucial precursor needed for NAD production. Normal agerelated decline can also lead to low NAD levels.
In complex II, ubiquinone (CoQ10) is needed to move the free electrons to the next electron transport chain phase. CoQ10 levels may be low in individuals taking statin drugs and in those with heart failure; levels also decline with age.
To support optimal mitochondrial function, I suggest this supplement protocol:
• B vitamins: 60 mg/day
• CoQ10: 300 mg/day
• Acetyl-L-carnitine: 1,000 mg/day
• NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a precursor to NAD: 200 mg/day
• Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA): 600 mg/day
• NAC/liposomal glutathione: 500 mg/day
• Magnesium: 200 mg/day
• Zinc: 40 mg/day
• Selenium: 200 mcg/day
• Vitamin C: 2,000 mg/day

mitochondria electron transport chain, particularly the high photon energy green and violet wavelengths. The key to their effectiveness is the photobiomic energy the wavelengths transmit to the cells and their mitochondria. Other light sources, such as red LED light in the infrared range, lack the coherence of laser light. These light sources can’t get absorbed efficiently into the tissues and provide minimal photobiomic effect.
In contrast, laser light in the red, green, and violet wavelengths activates photoreceptor molecules at every point along the mitochondrial electron transfer chain. The photobiomic effect is particularly effective for impacting the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase production in complex IV.
12 When the electron flow in the mitochondria is limited or completely blocked, the effect is like a kink in a hose: nothing gets through. The photobiomodulation impact of red, green, and violet laser light unkinks the hose and restores the energy flow.
Robust research supports the use of low-level laser therapy for treating chronic musculoskeletal pain. A recent study shows that high photo energy wavelengths in the green and violet spectrum are highly effective in reducing chronic neck and shoulder pain. This study provided substantial support for the first Food and Drug Administration clearance for the combined application of green and violet lasers. 13 Other research suggests that red-green-violet laser therapy can be helpful for a range of different disorders related to mitochondrial dysfunction, including chronic fatigue and traumatic brain injuries. In skilled hands, red, green, and violet low-level laser therapy is an important new treatment modality that will help patients achieve sustained pain relief and improved quality of life.
