In Flix, film critic Alyn Darnay opines that Aquaman is "a certified blockbuster, a mega-action superhero flick filled with spectacle, cool visuals, decadent insanity, and frenetic fun. It's quite probably the best film of the 'comic book' superhero genre brought to the screen so far." PREPARING FOR THE

"BIG GAME" aybe you lost a bet. Maybe you drew the short straw. Maybe you have demanding family in town. Maybe you just like athlete asses. Or... maybe you just really like football. Hey, it happens. But for one reason or another, you have ended up responsible for hosting a viewing of the "big game." That means food. And you aren't about to serve your sister's 7-layer dip, nachos or... well, whatever else those people nosh on in between first downs and sideline interviews of hotties.

First, let me say this. I am a huge football fan and have been since I was young. If hosting for the big event, I tailor snacks to the guests. But if I am going for a mixed crowd with some sense of tastes beyond some sisters' 7-layer dip, I go Greek – well Greek/Middle Eastern. Hey, they were athletic, butch and they frequently... let it all hang out! Base your snacks on the football standards of chips and dips. Kick it up a Greek notch and even the hard-core football fans won't be disappointed. Mine never have been, even if sometimes I am just waiting for the commercials and halftime wardrobe malfunction potential.

BEST EASY HUMMUS From Her Majesty Ina Garten at foodnetwork.com To me, the hot sauce is optional, I replace with white pepper to taste and increase the garlic. • 4 garlic cloves • 2 cups canned chickpeas, drained, liquid reserved • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1/3 cup tahini (sesame paste) • 6 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons) • 2 tablespoons water or liquid from the chickpeas • 8 dashes hot sauce Turn on the food processor fitted with the steel blade and drop the garlic down the feed tube; process until it's minced. Add the rest of the ingredients to the food processor and process until the hummus is coarsely pureed. Taste, for seasoning, and serve chilled or at room temperature.

Classic, perfect... • 1 cup grated medium whole cucumber • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh mint and/ or dill • 1 ½ teaspoons lemon juice. • 2 medium cloves garlic, pressed or minced • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt.

EASY BABA GANOUSH

Photo credit: © depositphotos.com | fudio Photo by Zak Chapman. pexels.com

From Paul Hollywood of Paul Hollywood's Bread at BBC.com. There are tons of different recipes for this eggplant based dish. Eggplants, or aubergines, have always been a challenge for me, but their sophisticated taste won me over. This was the simplest recipe could find for Baba ganoush. Personally, I would (as always) increase the garlic load and might add a minced shallot. • 3 aubergines (medium eggplants) • 3 garlic cloves, crushed with a teaspoon of salt • 1 lemon, juice only • 2 tbsp tahini • 3 tbsp olive oil • black pepper, to taste • 1 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley Prick the aubergines with a fork. Grill the aubergines until the skin is charred and blacked, and the flesh feels soft when you press it (this will take approximately 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through cooking). In a pestle and mortar, crush the garlic with the lemon juice, tahini, olive oil and pepper. When cool enough to handle, cut the aubergines in half and scoop out the flesh. Mix the soft flesh with the remaining ingredients. Place in a serving dish and finish with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle the parsley over the top.

Florida and abroad for hundreds of publication, ranging from Where Miami and the Sun-Sentinel Group to Frommer's Fodor's, Time Out, Fresh Guides, Black Book NY and more.

I would serve this "dip" combination with warm pita or other flatbreads, maybe lightly coated with olive oil before a re-heat. Alongside the flatbread spread, I might serve bowls of pistachios, dates, a plate of feta cheese, kalamata olives and Greek peppers. It might not be nachos or your sister's 7-layer dip. But it's really not hard. A couple of these dishes are likely to become frequent favorites of yours. They're largely healthy and bursting with taste. Go team!

TOP TRAX

ONES TO WATCH IN 2019 By DJ FR8-O

nother year has arrived, and with it another wave of artists waiting to take the world by storm. So who exactly will we be adding to our playlist of faves over the next twelve months? Well, with more and more out singers like Troye Sivan making their way into the mainstream, and gay-friendly icons like P!nk voicing their unwavering support for the LGBTQ community, it looks like 2019 may turn out to be the year of the rainbow… or unicorn… or rainbow unicorn. Here are a few allies that have been making their voices heard recently, and will only get louder and prouder.

Astrid S Scandinavia has been feeding us great music forever; especially over the last decade. Their latest export is already a mega star in her home country of Norway, collecting her first Norwegian Grammy Award for 'Newcomer of the Year' and the MTV EMA Award for 'Best Norwegian Act' in 2016, as well as the Spellemann 'Artist of the Year' Grammy the following year. She's opened for Troye Sivan during his European and North American tours, and is currently on the road with gay singer Olly Alexander and his internationally acclaimed pop group, Years & Years. Her latest tracks "Emotion" and "Closer" have already clocked over one million views and counting. So don't be surprised if you she starts topping the charts on this side of the pond soon. Brandon Stansell Pulling inspiration from his own coming out story, this out singer is making big waves throughout the country music scene. His bold honesty and stunning good looks have made him the latest LGBTQ icon, while his stellar voice and songwriting have created a massive buzz among the country music community. The groundbreaking video for his single "Hometown" has been applauded by his industry peers, and heralded as one of Rolling Stone Country's Top Country Music Videos of 2018. Whether or not the genre is your thing, the fact that an out artist is being played and praised by a community traditionally known for its strong religious values is a huge step in the right direction; not just for Stansell and other out artists like him, but for all of humanity. Expect to hear more of him in 2019. Normani Yet another Fifth Harmony member is stepping out into her own spotlight. Her first single, "Love Lies"– a duet with Khalid, recorded specifically for the coming of age/coming out film Love, Simon – has been blowing up the airwaves over the last few months. Her most recent venture is the two-track collaborative EP with international DJ/Producer Calvin Harris titled Normani x Calvin Harris, featuring "Checklist" and "Slow Down." Slowing down is exactly what Normani won't be doing when she joins Ariana Grande on her Sweetener tour this spring. All this buzz will culminate in the release of Normani's debut solo album set to drop sometime this year, so brace yourself for some catty rumors and petty shade from her former bandmate's followers.

If you're a recording artist, producer or musician and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at abarrios@wiremag.com. 12 WIREMAG.COM #02 2019

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER By Rafa Carvajal

"MR. AILEY ALWAYS SAID THAT HE WANTED HIS DANCERS TO BE A MIRROR FOR THE AUDIENCE, SO THAT THEY COULD SEE JUST HOW BEAUTIFUL THEY ARE." - DANIEL HARDER

14 WIREMAG.COM #02 2019

lvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) is returning to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County February 14-17, 2019 during a 21-city tour to celebrate its 60th anniversary; part of the Center's Knight Masterworks Season - Dance Series, which is presented with support from the Knight Foundation. The celebration will include world premieres, company premieres, new productions, timeless masterpieces, and much more. If you haven't experienced an Alvin Ailey dance performance, this is your opportunity to see this world famous company perform in our Magic City. For fans of Alvin Ailey like myself, we look forward to their annual Miami visit and to experiencing the new premieres as part of their 60th anniversary. Founded back in 1958, AAADT continues to thrive under Artistic Director Robert Battle, who is also a Miami native. Battle was personally chosen by Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison, which makes him only the third person to head the company during its illustrious six decades of dance. This season, the company returns with the world premiere of Lazarus by acclaimed hip-hop choreographer Rennie (Lorenzo) Harris, AAADT's first two-act work. Inspired by the legacy of Alvin Ailey, Harris connects the past and present by tackling the racial inequities in America back when the company was founded, that still exist today in parts of our country. Another world premiere is The Call by Ronald K. Brown, a mix of modern and West African dance idioms. The work is "a love letter to Mr. Ailey." Alvin Ailey & Vinnette Carroll. To preview AAADT's 60th anniversary celebration, Wire Magazine sat down with Alvin Ailey dancer Daniel Harder to discuss what inspired him to become a dancer and his thoughts on AAADT turning 60. Daniel began dancing at Suitland High School's Center for the Visual and Performing Arts in Maryland, and graduated from the Ailey/Fordham B.F.A. Program in Dance – where he was awarded the Jerome Robbins/Layton Foundation Scholarship. He became a member of Ailey II after dancing in the European tour of West Side Story and joined AAADT in 2010. Rafa Carvajal: What inspired you to become a dancer? Daniel Harder: Watching Michael and Janet Jackson videos as a kid. RC: What does it mean to you to be a part of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater? DH: As a black, gay man living in this country, being able to express fully and wholeheartedly who I am by sharing my experiences through my art, and in turn allowing audiences to see that we are more alike and special than dierent, is a blessing that I don't take for granted. I am able to do this because of the platform that Mr. Ailey created 60 years ago.

"MR. AILEY'S GENIUS SPEAKS TO THE HUMAN SPIRIT." - DANIEL HARDER

AAADT. Photo by Andrew Eccles

RC: Why do you think Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has withstood the test of time for 60 years? DH: Mr. Ailey's genius speaks to the human spirit. He definitely created his company around the need for the African American experience and expression to be celebrated and voiced through the modern dance tradition. However, that expression is universal and one that appeals to all‌ no matter race, religion, creed or orientation. That's why the company has lasted for so long and will continue to be a vital force for years to come. RC: Are any new productions premiering this year at the Arsht Center? If so, which ones? DH: There will be several premieres happening this year at the Arsht Center. Rennie Harris's Lazarus, which is a one hour, two-act ballet that examines the racial inequities of the past and present through hip-hop and house dance. Ron Brown's, The Call, Wayne McGregor's, Kairos, and a program entitled Timeless Ailey that celebrates the genius of Alvin Ailey and many of the 79 ballets that he created for his company during his lifetime will also be premiering at the Arsht Center. 16 WIREMAG.COM #02 2019

RC: Describe your style of dance in three words. DH: Versatile, sincere and expressive. RC: What does dancing mean to you? DH: Dance is equivalent to breathing for me. It feeds my mind, body and soul and allows me the means to create, express, and share the many dierent facets of who I am in their most honest form. RC: Why do you think Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the world's most beloved dance companies? DH: I think the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a representation of the genius and legacy of Alvin Ailey. With that being said, the company has become a beacon for excellence, but also a place where audience members can see themselves and their experiences. Mr. Ailey always said that he wanted his dancers to be a mirror for the audience, so that they could see just how beautiful they are.

RC: What moment has stood out to you the most in your Alvin Ailey career thus far? DH: Being asked to join the company in 2010 by Artistic Director Emerita, Judith Jamison. It's a day I will never forget. RC: What advice do you have for aspiring dancers who would want to join Alvin Ailey? DH: Continue to love what you do and remember that it's your passion. Now, in tandem with that, fall in love with hard work. Anything worth achieving is worth working hard for. RC: Where do you see your dance career 10 years from now? DH: Stay tuned... RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DH: I hope to see you at the Arsht Center.

AQUAMAN

y any definition, Aquaman is a certified blockbuster, a mega-action superhero flick filled with spectacle, cool visuals, decadent insanity, and frenetic fun. It's quite probably the best film of the 'comic book' superhero genre brought to the screen so far.

return to Atlantis to keep the boy safe, entrusting his welfare and education to her advisor Vulko (Dafoe).

As an origins tale, Aquaman seems a little long at 2 ½ hours, but each time you begin to feel that way, it takes off again and you're into another wildly absurd, unexpected, and exciting adventure. Been a long time since even a Bond film has done that for an audience. Even the ending, as predictable as possible, will leave you satisfied.

This is definitely Momoa's film; it's an instant star turn. He's fun to watch, never taking himself seriously, and he carries the role of Aquaman with ease and humor. Every other character in the film just seems like his support team. We just want to watch him do his thing, not them.

Years pass and Orm (Wilson), the new power-hungry King of Atlantis, has decided to consolidate his forces with the other underwater realms, and destroy The scope of the eye candy the surface dwellers who here is breathtaking; from the are ruining the Oceans and clever underwater physics and threaten Atlantis' security. Aquaman Rating: 4-1/2 stars (out of 5) Rated: PG-13

Running Time: 2 hours and 22 minutes

One dark stormy night, lighthouse keeper Thomas Curry (Morrison) rescues Atlanna (Kidman), a princess on the run from fabled Atlantis. They fall in love and give birth to Arthur (Momoa) an illicit half-human, half-Atlantean child with the ability to communicate with creatures of the sea. Atlanna is forced to abandon them and

Kidman is wonderful, but she's not in the film much. Heard is also good, but she's hampered with a role written generically. The other standout performance is by Abdul-Mateen II as Aquaman's nemesis Black Manta. My take… I liked the film. It's a fun time for every age group. If you can, see it in IMAX. Can a film with Momoa and the Rock be far away? I'd pay to see that.
