The story of Brehon Brewhouse begins centuries ago when medieval Brehon Law compelled all Irish clans to have a brewery on a public road, with a never-dry cauldron and hospitality towards weary travelers. It was quite literally the law of the land to offer strangers warmth, companionship, and a good pint of ale.

Today, Brehon Brewhouse extends that timeless spirit of generosity and good beer into the modern era. It sits on a dairy farm in the rolling green hills of County Monaghan, Ireland. In fact, it is the only brewery in all of Europe located on a working dairy farm. The farm has been in the McMahon family for ten generations and is still home to a herd of approximately 300 dairy cattle which are milked daily. The family has ties to the alcohol industry going back decades as a supplier of cream to Irish distilling legends like Jamison's and Bailey's. Opening a brewery offered a way to boost the productivity of the homestead at a time when craft brewing was taking off, and current owner Seamus McMahon decided to have a go. Sheds were converted for the brewery and a Master Brewer was hired. The strategy was to create a core lineup of classic Irish Styles complimented by a unique barrel aging program done in partnership with small craft Irish distilleries.

Seamus, often referred to as the ‘King of the Stouts’ in Ireland, has created a beautiful range of high-quality craft beer with a flavor to suit everyone’s tastes. Its diverse lineup is a delicious taste of traditional Irish ales and acclaimed barrel-aged stouts and porters, all crafted with artisanal craft devotion just as they were done centuries ago according to ancient Brehon Law. ULSTER BLACK

Our signature stout, Ulster Black has an unmistakable toasted malt aroma, that continues into flavours of dark chocolate, coffee and light detailing of bitter hops. The use of Oatmeal lends to a smooth mouthfeel. Full bodied and full of flavour, this cozy stout always hits the spot. ABV 5.0

KILLANNY RED

Described by many as “The perfect example of an Irish Red”, Killanny Red is named after the townland that surrounds our farm and brewery. The deep, russet ruby hue of this beer is complimented by its biscuity aromatic caramel malt, nutty flavours of toasted hazelnut, and crisp tones of hops and berries.

This beer is great on its own and just perfect with BBQ red meats, lamb, stew, roast beef, black pudding or mature cheddar.

BREHON BLONDE

This Blonde Ale is one of our first, and most signature beers. This nononsense Golden Ale is always a hit, with a delicious malty honey-oat body, citrusy hops and a crisp, lightly bitter spicy finish. It’s a recipe that has, and will continue to, stand the test of time.

Fabulous with white fish, shellfish, BBQ chicken or food from the Mediterranean, but equally as enjoyable on its own.

SHANCO DUBH PORTER

Patrick Kavanagh’s family bought a triangle plot of land just outside Inniskeen called “An Seanchuach Dubh” , or “Shancoduff.” This delicious Porter is inspired by the dark shadowy field he often called Black Shanco. It’s chocolate aromas and faint coffee and liquorice tones keep this bold treasure close in the memory of anyone who seizes the opportunity to succumb to it’s smooth, velvety embrace. ABV 7.7

SHANCO DUBH BA PORTER

A truly special Version of our ever-popular Shanco Dubh Porter, this dark and robust Ale has been Barrel aged in Oak Whiskey Casks to produce more malt, more caramel, and more WOW! With a spicy chocolate and smooth coffee finish, this beer is perfect for good food, and more importantly, good company. ABV 8.8

CRANN BEATHA BA IMPERIAL STOUT

This exceptional Imperial stout is smothered in chocolate and dark roasted coffee, with delicious spicy Christmas flavours of cinnamon, aniseed, and whiskey malt. With its rich warming flavours and smooth bitterness, this wonder is only befitting of the name “The Tree Of Life” or Crann Beatha in Irish, the Celtic symbol for rebirth, and the emblem we proudly display as the crest of our brewery. ABV 10

RAGLAND ROAD BA IMPERIAL STOUT

Raglan Road Whiskey Barrel-Aged

The result of a long-term friendship between us and the whiskey finishing masters, Jack Ryan Whiskey. They came to us seeking out some whiskey casks to finish out their latest release, we gladly obliged. The notes of Madeira and Bourbon from the whiskey compliment the sweetness of roasted malts perfectly. The rich flavours of chocolate and liquorice fall deliciously into their place amongst the warmth of whiskey. ABV 8.8

OAK AND MIRRORS BA IMPERIAL PORTER

Whiskey-aged porter from a collaboration with our good friends at TWO STACKS using their freshly emptied single malt cask to mature our brew. Of course, getting it right took a few tastings with the lads. This is a superior whiskey cask-aged imperial porter that will please the most discerning of whiskey-loving palettes. ABV 7.7

BECH BRETHA BRAGGOT

Discover the unique Bech Bretha Braggot, a distinctive brew from the Brehon Brewhouse. This 9% ABV braggot is a harmonious blend of mead and ale, crafted in collaboration with Gulfstream Brewing Co in Florida, USA.

It boasts a rich honey flavour, complemented by subtle caramel notes and a hint of smokiness from the malt. Braggot, a traditional Celtic drink dating back to the 12th century, is made with grains, hops, and generous amounts of honey.

The name Bech Bretha pays homage to the ancient Irish beekeeping laws, reflecting the brew's deep historical roots and the brewery's commitment to tradition. Experience this tribute to Brehon Law, a perfect choice for those who appreciate a beer with a rich history and a unique taste. ABV 9.0
