THE STORY BEHIND BREHON

The Brewery takes its name from the old Brehon Laws which used to govern Medieval Ireland. Brehon Law stated that every clan was to brew beer for their own family and to have fresh food and ale available for all visitors. This has become our main ethos, brewing fresh, high quality beer to share with our, friends, family and beyond. Plus the brewery is always open to visitors, we run weekly tours and host private events of all sizes.

Our taproom is located in the cottage that our founder Seamus grew up in. It predates 1888 and has been lived in by several generations of the McMahon family.

Adjoining the taproom is another cottage, which was constructed in 1837, predating the Famine. This rich heritage is the inspiration behind all of our beers, with each beer having a wee story behind it. Hence our tagline; Irish Beer, Crafted in Stories.

Provenance

– we stay true to our place of origin:

Developed by a desire to diversify, we take inspiration from the wealth of local history in our area.

We brew and package all our beers on site on our family premises.

2 original cottages remain on the farm, one built in 1837, predating the Famine and the second was built pre 1888.

The "newer“ cottage has been converted into our tasting room and shop, packed with stories and memories which inspire our brews and are shared with our visitors.

Famous Irish Poet, Patrick Kavanagh was born and raised just a few miles from the Brewerysome of the names of our beers have taken inspiration from the works of this local and international legend.

Quality and Craft

All Brehon Brewhouse beer is carefully brewed on site using a state-of-the-art micro-brewing facility; we have grown to a 30 HL plant

Its true to say that the biggest ingredient added to our beer is time. We never rush our brewing process and are committed to dedicating the required time to make each brew perfect. Our signature range of Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts have earned us the title of 'Kings of Stout’ in Ireland.

OUR BEERS: THE CORE RANGE

We have invested heavily in our brand; our premium packaging reflects our unique brand origin, and our range carries stories of our provenance and heritage.

Our core range includes popular brews including:

Brehon Blonde (Blonde Ale)

One of our first and signature beers, guaranteed to stand the test of time.

Killanny Red (Irish Red Ale)

Described by many as the perfect example of Irish stout and named after a towNland that surrounds the brewery and farm.

Ulster Black (Oatmeal Stout)

Full bodied and full of flavour, this signature stout always hits the spot!

Stony Grey (IPA)

Like Patrick Kavanagh, we too took inspiration from “The Stony Grey Soil of Monaghan” when crafting this fragrant yet herbal and woody IPA.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT SPECIALS AND BARREL AGING.

We are innovative and passionate in equal measure and are constantly seeking out new styles of beers and exploring new techniques.

Our most popular special and something we have become quite famous for, is our Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts.

In Ireland, we are known as the 'Kings of Stout’.

We also offer 2 Gluten Free Beers to our customers:

> Good Times Hazy Pale Ale

> Bright and Light Irish Lager

We also brew 3 to 4 one off specials each year, going as far to collaborate with other renowned micro breweries on some of these limited edition beers.

To date this year our specials have been a Braggot, a Sloe Gin Sour and a Cold IPA.

We have collaborated with Gulf Stream Brewing out of Florida and Birraffico Gregorio from Italy on some of these specials.

OUR BEERS: BARREL AGED IMPERIAL STOUTS

Our most popular special and something we have become quite famous for, is our Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts. In Ireland, we are known as the 'Kings of Stout’. The hard, limey water we get from our farm's deep borewell lends perfectly for brewing stouts. Linking in with Whiskey Distilleries across Ireland, we have access to a variety of empty whiskey barrels to age our Stouts in for at least 6 months. Sealed with a wax cap finish, these premium aged stouts are now available all year round due to popular demand.

EXPERIENCE THE BREWEY OF BREHON

We are proud of our unique origin and our rich heritage and want to share the Brehon Experience with our customers.

Every week we open our doors and run full brewery and farm tours.

Visitors get to experience firsthand our family business. They see the milking parlor and meet the McMahon herd which supplies milk to Tírlán and cream for the famous Bailey’s Irish liqueur.

Afterwards, visitors experience the brewery where the brewing process is explained, and visitors get to smell and taste the specially selected malts and hops which go into the beer.

Next up is the tasting room in the original family home, which still has the old range and dressers Seamus’s grandmother used. What a site to behold! Nobody leaves this room disappointed.

The tour ends with a little beer taster, while Seamus regales with stories of past events and the characters who resided there over the years.

EXPERIENTIAL CAMPAIGN LIVE MUSIC & EVENTS

We want to bring more people to the brewery to help showcase our unique brand origin and create a brand experience.

Working with tour operators, we welcomed at least 1 full bus every 2 weeks across the summer season. All culminating in over 600 US based tourists visiting the brewery in one day.

We also ran live events in the form of a Brewery Showcase Event and Live Music Gigs.

The Gathering; we opened up the brewery to members of the public, with ticket prices including all drink and food on the day with Music and Entertainment provided. Limited to 50 guests, it sold out within 24hrs of going live. Live Music; with local bands such as The Mary Wallopers, Fuzzy Burgers, The Willin Fools and The Porter Boys Social Club, we hosted 3 nights of Live Music at the Brewery. All 3 gigs sold out and proved a great success.

OUR STORY SO FAR...
