Silk Concept / Logo Development Working within a collaborative partnership with Joe Harrison, I worked mainly upon the laying out and delivery of designs for printed promotion. An acquantance came to us asking us to aid them in the design of their logo and all promotional material and tickets for their event; a new drum & bass night in leeds. This brief is spread along an extended period of time, as the original promotion was done for an event on the 7 march. Following the success of that event, another is being held on the 29th of april. The initial task set to us by the client was the creation of a logo for them to use across all their media. Initially, they required skeumorphic logotype inspired by real life silk. 3-dimensional lettering involving overlapping elements of silk were the initial plan. After considerable testing, it was decided by the client that the logo should be based upon an existing typeface. Glyphs were formed and then adjusted slightly in weight to make finals shown below and below right.

Flier Design 7th March Event At the beginning of the design process for the flier, I experimented with a folding page graphic to display the information upon. As the clients wanted a paper texture to be included on the printed media, I felt that this fit and also added an unusual visual element not often found in flier design. considering the line up and how best to display it, it became clear that while the folding page concept may not be used in the end, creating type within it was still applicable and could be used for the flat lineup. After a time and discussion with the client, it was decided that the line-up side would maintain the same flat style as conventional fliers.

Silk Poster Design 7th March Event To create the poster a largely similar formula was used as was used for the line-up side, however with a greater emphasis on the logo (both image and type). Here were some of the developments of the poster. To the right is the finished poster, as it was sent to print. A larger silk image was used (shown as originally found below). Furthermore the paper texture also had to be replaced due to sizing issues. The design process for the poster took far less time than that of the flier as most of the design features were simply scaled up from the flier. Despite the quick approach to the creation of the poster, it was widely recieved as functioning well (if not better than the flier). This could be attributed to the space allowed the silk texture or possibly the logo inclusion.

Silk Transition to 29th April After the success of the first night, the clients for the silk brief required further design work for the promotion of a second night. To be held at a different venue to first one on the 29th of april, this change reflected a new attempt to entice the audience. This shift lead to certain design changes, mainly the changing of text alignment from central to left. Work was done with the client to find a new silk image which could be used for both the poster and the flier (to maintain consistency). As the client originally intended to make an A2 Poster, we searched for a particularly high resolution image, couldn’t find one for free, and the client ended up buying stock images for both the silk and the paper. The original images are shown below the modified ones which were used in the final designs. The Beat Bar logo is shown below.

Flier & Poster Design 29 April Event Despite the changes made to texturing sources, the typeface was kept the same, as was the texture combination (except fo altering the lineup background to silk and text to paper). The design of the back stayed largely the same, however the introduction of more event information and venue promotion enforced the night. Unlike the previous poster, the design of the new night’s larger promotional material would simply be an enlargement of the flier’s lineup side. This was done to increase consistency across the range but also to save time, as the brief was sent to us at a late date.
