From the Director Dear Friends of Windrush, Thank you all for being a part of the Windrush community as we celebrate Windrush Farm’s 50th anniversary. Who would have ever believed that Marj Kittredge’s vision in 1964 should become the impetus behind the now blossoming industry known internationally as the field of Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies? Marj’s insight and determination set the ball in motion, and through tremendous support from our community and many friends, we have been building and strengthening our programs ever since. It is you who helped us secure a permanent home and you who help us make a daily impact on our client’s lives. It is your generosity that enables Windrush to continue with its mission of changing lives. Your support makes a lasting impact. If you have not had the opportunity to see the program in action and your gifts at work, I invite you to do so. We would love to have all of you out to the farm for a private visit and tour. Our clients are ever thankful, and enjoy sharing their success stories. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all this evening as we celebrate Windrush’s past and invite you all to invest in Windrush’s future. I hope that you all have a wonderful evening. Most sincerely,

Amanda Hogan Executive Director

From the Board Greetings and Welcome! Thank you for joining us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Windrush Farm and setting the foundation for the next 50 years. In the 10 months that I have been president and chairman of the board I have learned so much and appreciate so much more the miracle of Windrush. The dedication of our staff and volunteers is amazing. A number of our staff have devoted nearly all of their career to Windrush and several volunteers have been with us for over three decades. The outstanding work they do is recognized nationally and Windrush is the preeminent leader in our field. Likewise the dedication of our sponsors and supporting community – you – is equally amazing. Many donors and sponsors have been with us from our early days. I think I have a glimpse as to why this is so. Earlier this year Kylie Jacques wrote a wonderful profile about Windrush Farm in North Shore magazine. She interviewed staff, volunteers, clients, family members and board members. The most common reason she found for each person’s dedication to Windrush was impact. Windrush makes a difference in the lives of many and people want to be a part of that difference. This weekend we are celebrating the achievement of 50 years of successfully making a difference. I doubt that many other similar organizations could make that claim. Which leads me to two very important words: thank you. The wonderful miracle of Windrush could not happen without every member of our community. For 50 years we have earned your support and we intend to continue doing just that for the next 50. Thank you and enjoy the celebration!

Bob Gore President and Board Chair “Riding helps her strengthen her mid-line, which is weak due to her cerebral palsy. She has very bad lordosis and scoliosis of her back. I’m extremely proud of her and she’s proud of herself, which helps her selfesteem. I get the satisfaction of seeing her become independent and seeing her happy doing something that helps her.” ~Corey Page, Windrush Parent

Spotlight Program: Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is a non traditional medically based treatment strategy which American Hippotherapy Association certified Occupational, Physical, or Speech therapists use as a treatment strategy to treat children and adults with diagnosis such as Autism, Cerebral palsy, stroke, genetic disorders, R/A, Down syndrome, Tramatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries.

“My child can now sit and eat his meal through an entire family dinner without falling over because his core is so much stronger.”

Therapy sessions focus upon addressing medically based individualized therapy goals in the areas of physical development, cognitive processing, language aquisition, sensory-motor processing, and the development of social/emotional skills.

“My child for the first time sang in the car.... we didn’t know he knew the words and he has listened to this CD for months...we pulled the car over and just cried...tears of joy.”

“My child has the strength and endurance to play on the playground with other kids.” “My child is so much more confident that he is now sticking up for himself and telling his twin in a loud voice not to touch his toys.”

These little things may be perceived as no big deal, but really are big deals to these families... to these kids...it is all about quality of life which many of us take for granted.

OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS STATE HOUSE ● BOSTON, MA 02133 (617) 725-4000

DEVAL L. PATRICK GOVERNOR

September 2014 Dear Friends: On behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I send warm greetings as you gather for Windrush Farm’s 50th Anniversary. Since 1964, Windrush Farm has created horse-therapy programs that help people with various disabilities. Today, Windrush Farm is recognized nationwide for its unique equine-assisted therapy. Much of this success is due to the organization’s belief: to encourage its members to focus on their abilities, and not on their disabilities. Through its therapy, education programs, and other events, Windrush Farm provides its members with a fun, unique and life-changing experience. I would like to thank the organization and its partners for their service to the residents of our Commonwealth. Today marks an important advancement for the farm and its community. I would like to acknowledge all the partners that have made this milestone possible. Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable and successful celebration. Sincerely,

A Living Legacy

Contributed by Hayley Barrett Time stands still here. The road is quiet and lined with trees. Horses graze in grassy meadows. Ducks paddle in the pond. Children ride ponies through the woods. This is Windrush Farm. For fifty years, people of all ages and abilities have come here to find healing and hope. In 1964, Mrs. Marjorie Kittredge founded Windrush, one of the first therapeutic riding establishments in the country, with two horses and the profound conviction that, “everyone can do more than they think they can.’’ Today, Windrush serves over two thousand people a year. The farm enjoys decadeslong relationships with the Perkins School for the Blind, Special Olympics, and St. Ann’s Home and School, among others. Innovative offerings include equineassisted experiences for veterans, local youth-at-risk programs, and Spaulding Rehabilitation clients. Almost five hundred dedicated volunteers devote their time to keep the farm thriving.

Debbie Shade has volunteered with Windrush for over 23 years. From the beginning, Windrush’s cooperative, compassionate culture impressed her. “We were going to work with the Perkins kids. Marj had me get on a horse and put a blindfold on me. She knew it was important for volunteers to know exactly what the children would experience.” Executive director Amanda Hogan joined the Windrush team in 1975. “Marj was a visionary. She believed that time spent outdoors and in the company of horses would help people build a solid work ethic, strength, and confidence. Students learned to be resourceful and accountable. It motivated them and carried over to other areas of their lives.” Horses respond to kindness with friendly trust. A small child in a wheelchair can lead them. A soldier braving PTSD can rely on them. They don’t require speech to forge a bond of friendship. They take no note of physical or other differences. This unique quality of acceptance is why the farm’s twenty-five seasoned horses are the heart of Windrush’s work.

Recent Happenings: Founder’s Luncheon

The second Founder’s Luncheon was held on Wednesday, May 21 at the Myopia Hunt Club. About 60 friends attended the event that awarded Prides Crossing resident, Nathaniel Coolidge with the Marjorie V. Kittredge Award.

a trusted advisor and steady supporter in his role as a Board member and Endowment trustee. His financial expertise, sound business sense and down to earth common sense have been invaluable to the organization.

The award was established in 2012 to recognize an individual whose unwavering support of Windrush Farm and the greater community embodies the true spirit of our founder and her legacy, Windrush Farm.

Nat was not only a good friend to Marj but became a very good friend to members of the management staff here at Windrush after her passing.

Nathaniel Coolidge has the distinction of being the longest serving board member at Windrush Farm – more than thirty years. Beyond being a good friend to Marj, Nat has been an outstanding supporter of Windrush. For more than thirty years he has supported this organization with: advice, labor, volunteer time, and donations of money and equipment. Nat was instrumental in encouraging the relationship with The Trust for Public Land, which enabled Windrush to secure the farm as a permanent home for the program, and to protect the land as Marj and her children wished. Nat has also been

“He recognized how devoted we all were to the organization and how much we all missed Marj,” shares Mandy Hogan, executive director. “Nat would check in regularly to see how we were doing and made us feel proud of the work we do. He takes his stewardship job seriously.” “The Windrush Founder’s award is given in recognition of an individual whose support of Windrush and the greater community embodies the true spirit of our founder, Marj, and her legacy, Windrush Farm,” shares Murray. “This year’s recipient is a man whose steady guidance and unwavering support has been instrumental in guiding Windrush through its first fifty years and putting it in a position to enjoy even greater success in its next fifty years!”

Spotlight Program: Horsemanship for Heroes

In May, a group came to Windrush from the Wounded Warriors’ Project Odyssey. Project Odyssey helps soldiers overcome combat stress through outdoor, rehabilitative retreats that encourage a connection with nature, peers, staff and counselors. Joined by enthusiastic volunteers, the warriors participated in unmounted activities. These involved the veterans trying to “read” the horses based on their actions and behaviors; hands-on work of brushing and grooming; and active involvement including leading and lunging.

An Air Force veteran, Donald O’Hagan, has been riding at Windrush Farm since 2008. “It’s an opportunity for us to focus on and look forward to something outside of regular life”, says O’Hagan. “It takes the focus off of everyday problems.” Donald is volunteering his time to assist his fellow soldiers on their journey at the farm. The camaraderie was evident from the moment the group set foot on the property. There were chuckles and smiles as each warrior enjoyed their time on the farm. Not only were they improving their self-esteem and confidence, but were also experiencing a connection with the nature and their peers.

All of us at Windrush Farm would like to thank you for your participation in this year’s Jubilee! “Changing lives, one stride at a time, one smile at a time.”
