FY2015 ANNUAL REPORT (July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015)

A LETTER OF THANKS Dear Windrush Supporter, Because of you, Windrush Farm has had another banner year in helping people and making a significant impact in the greater community. The word “impact is certainly prevalent when you speak with staff, volunteers and supporters about why they donate their time, money and effort to Windrush. In Fiscal Year 2015, thanks to your generosity, we served over 400 individuals with special needs and collaborated with some incredible organizations. For example, we celebrated 30 years of working with The Perkins School for the Blind. Reading on, you will see the complete list of our partnerships. This past year, volunteers clocked over 10,700 service hours in weekly classes and special events. We hosted numerous Community Service Days. Volunteers came to help from many local schools and organizations. We had employees from many corporations. Those companies bringing their employees to Windrush keep coming back for the same reason: impact. Many of the highlights of this past year are included in the body of our annual report. Please take the time to read through and see what programs Windrush was able to expand and develop because of your thoughtful gifts. FY 2015 was a great year and FY 2016 is shaping up the same way thanks to the very dedicated Windrush Community. There are two other words we use a lot at Windrush, and we mean them: THANK YOU! Please come for a visit any time!

Program Highlights • Increasing hippotherapy offerings by adding an additional therapist and an additional day. We had a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and a certified occupational therapy assistant practicing hippotherapy on Mondays and Fridays and serve 16 hippotherapy clients. • Barn Buddies is an unmounted program pairing a client, with or without special needs, with one of our specially trained volunteer coaches to work on individually developed goals in the barn. Clients have a hands-on learning experience performing various tasks around the farm and with the horses under the guidance and supervision of their volunteer coach. This program is designed for both children and adults. • Developing partnerships and collaborations with other organizations to create a more diverse client base. We developed a partnership with YouthBuild Lawrence and YouthBuild North Shore, agencies which deliver GED and carpentry training for youth “at risk”. YouthBuild Lawrence rotated twenty students through Windrush (five students for five hours, once a week over 32 weeks) for a total 300 hours of volunteer service. • Hosting 36 riders with disabilities for the Massachusetts Special Olympics for the 25th year. • Completing our brand new Veterans Obstacle Course. In conjunction with a grant from PATH Intl. and the construction savvy of YouthBuild Lawrence, we were able to build an obstacle course including a see-saw, balance beam, flat and round bridge, pedestals and steps. Our clients will need to be able to build a relationship with their horse in order to lead their horse through the course, which is the only one of its kind in the area.

Elizabeth Haley: A Joy To Know Contributed by Susan Foote

Karen Ontell, volunteer and Elizabeth Haley at Special Olympics.

When people think of Elizabeth Haley a smile always comes to their face. One of Windrush Farm’s longest riding clients, she is most definitely a glass half full kind of person and a delight to be around. Elizabeth arrived at Windrush at age 8 as a special needs students from the Marblehead Public Schools. According to her mother, Anne Roberts, when she first began lessons she would not even enter the barn. Elizabeth has developmental delays, ADD, and some mild retardation. Anne’s goal was to increase her daughter’s selfconfidence. “I thought it would be a wonderful thing for her to be in charge of a good horse and get it where she wanted it to go. I also knew it would be terrific for her balance.” Riding lessons continued for Elizabeth until she reached her teens and resumed when she turned 22 and entered a group home. Today she is 35 and rides once a week. “There have been significant changes for Elizabeth over the years. She is so much stronger and doesn’t hesitate to give vocal demands to her horse at a walk or trot. It’s been wonderful to see thanks to a fabulous staff,” said Anne. “She also has made many friends at Windrush and loves everyone there. I’d say she has blossomed socially, and it melts my heart.” Pam Skinner and Tina Fransioli have both had the pleasure of teaching Elizabeth over the years. When asked to describe their student, they each mentioned how polite and kind she is and the caring cards she sends to Windrush Farm on holidays. “We are all capable of more than we think, and that includes Elizabeth,” said Pam. “She is always upbeat and fearless – a joy to know.” “Elizabeth is extremely cooperative in receiving instruction and a true delight to teach. Her trotting has improved a great deal and she now posts in rhythm,” said Tina. “I hope to see her ride independently. Elizabeth is always open to a challenge and together we will get there.”
