Hey, Flower Pot! I’m using your question! HTH. I confess this issue leaves me in a quandary.

On the one hand, I usually tend to sympathize with the city’s efforts to impose order on its citizens, since—no offense—you guys are morons. In this case, however, as one of the morons having order imposed upon him, I’m inclined to side with you.

The installations you’re seeing are what transportation officials call “traffic-calming devices.” It’s sort of funny, actually, because when I’m driving, I find that they don’t make me calm at all! In fact, they make me turn red in the face and say words like “chickenfucker.” I guess everybody’s different.

There are lots of these devices strewn about the city—along Southeast Clinton Street, in several intersections north of Northeast Broadway, and a particularly horrible one at Northeast Rodney Avenue and Ivy Street.

I hit up the Portland Bureau of Transporta-

tion about this with a polite, neutrally worded query that may or may not have contained the phrase “turning a two-block jaunt into a 16-block odyssey along whose interminable windings many of us will perish of cholera and/or old age.” They replied that the diverters are there precisely to keep folks like you (and, less justifiably, me) from using neighborhood streets as thoroughfares, specially designated greenways earmarked for use by bikes.

And just as I was about to say “Screw that,” along comes the killjoy Los Angeles Times with a Feb. 27 report that pedestrian deaths are skyrocketing even as motorist deaths are on the decline.* When you think of it that way, I suppose I must—grudgingly—concur that not killing passers-by is worth a little cholera. *The decline in motorist deaths isn’t due to better driving, but to improved safety features.

NEW GUN-SALE RESTRICTIONS MAY VIOLATE STATE LAW: The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries wrote a letter March 6 to Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek, advising them that state law would probably support a complaint that stores raising the minimum age for gun sales to 21 are engaged in age discrimination. The BOLI letter lends weight to two lawsuits filed March 5 by a 20-year-old Gold Hills, Ore., man against Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods, claiming the stores violated state law by refusing to sell him a gun before he turned 21. A former Lane County judge, Jim Hargreaves, first raised concerns on wweek. com that the age restrictions instated by Walmart, Dick’s, Bi-Mart and Fred Meyer stores might violate Oregon’s anti-discrimination laws.

Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian says the policies probably violate those laws, but they were meant to “make public places safer.”

He told Courtney and Kotek he intends to introduce a bill in 2019 to place guns among the products listed as exceptions to the law—like alcohol and tobacco.

WYDEN’S WIFE INHERITS BOOKSTORE: The family of U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) is now a good deal wealthier—in books. The New York Post reported March 4 that Nancy Bass Wyden, the senator’s wife, has inherited a large part of the $25 million fortune left by her late father, Fred Bass, who owned the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan. Bass, who died in January at age 89, left the Strand to Nancy Wyden in his will, the Post reported.

Sen. Wyden’s office declined to comment.

TRIMET ENDS $175 FARE-HOPPING FINES: One of the most draconian fines in Portland is history.

Last week, TriMet’s board of directors voted to change the transit agency’s fare evasion policy so that first-time offenders caught without a proof of fare payment are no longer handed a $175 fine. Riders who failed to pay the $2.50 fare will be allowed to pay a reduced fine, serve community service or enroll in a low income/honored citizen program. WW praised the reform last month (“30 Reasons to Love Portland Right Now,” WW, Feb. 14, 2017).

STONE ENLISTS PROUD BOYS FOR OREGON SECURITY: Roger Stone—the former political adviser to Richard Nixon and President Donald Trump—appeared without incident at the state’s oldest Republican conference last weekend.

But an organizer of the Dorchester Conference in Salem says Stone was so worried for his safety that he enlisted a right-wing group as private security. Patrick Sheehan, a Dorchester board member who booked Stone, says Stone reached out to the Proud Boys—a group notorious for its participation in Portland street brawls—after reading about violent political clashes in Oregon. “He was worried about getting killed,” Sheehan says. “He gets death threats constantly.”

Which Way, Tollway?

Portland has five options for tolling interstate highways.

City officials like the biggest one.

Portland-area drivers could soon see tolls along much of Interstates 5 and 205, if city officials have their way.

Last summer, the Oregon Legislature approved a plan to begin tolling on Portland-area highways, seeking to reduce traffic jams during rush hours and raise money for road construction.

What lawmakers didn’t decide: the location of tolls, the amount to be charged or which hours the tolling would be in effect.

But an Oregon Department of Transportation committee tasked with making a recommendation by this summer is reviewing five concrete options for which roads would be tolled.

And the city of Portland has weighed in, saying it favors a plan that would implement tolls along all of I-5 and I-205 from the Washington state line down to the junction of the two highways south of Tualatin.

The city likes the most extensive tolls because such a plan would be least likely to encourage drivers to cheat the tolls by briefly hopping off the highways in favor of local streets.

And it won’t require construction of new highway bridges or lanes, making it cheaper.

“It has greatest potential to relieve congestion at the lowest cost to taxpayers,” says Brendan Finn, chief of staff to City Commissioner Dan Saltzman.

There’s one potential downside to several of these options: They would require the sign-off of the Trump administration—which is expected to take at least a year.

Here are the five options the ODOT committee can choose from:

$25,000 WHO GOT IT? Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat seeking re-election.

WHO GAVE IT? As first reported by the Eugene Register-Guard, Kevin Peng Xu, CEO of Los Angeles- and Beijing-based MEBO International, which makes burn treatments and other regenerative medical supplements.

WHY IS IT INTERESTING? Xu, the son of MEBO’s founder, has become an enormous political donor, giving nearly $350,000 to various campaigns in 2016. As a mark of his prominence in Democratic circles, Xu attended the last state dinner at the Obama White House in 2016.

Observers think the governor’s main GOP challenger, state Rep. Knute Buehler (R-Bend), could raise $10 million—a number Brown cannot match unless she can attract big, out-of-state donors such as Xu. WHAT DOES BROWN’S CAMPAIGN SAY? ”Kevin Xu is a nationally active progressive philanthropist,” says Brown’s campaign manager, Thomas Wheatley.

Double Duty Three Portland City Council candidates mix campaigning with their day jobs.

Last week, Portland City Council candidate Jo Ann Hardesty stepped aside from her role as HARDESTY president of the NAACP of Portland.

Her decision came after WW raised questions about the NAACP’s policy that requires officers to resign at SMITH least temporarily when seeking elected office.

(Hardesty entered the race in August.)

Hardesty isn’t the only candidate in the race juggling other duties and an election VALDERRAMA campaign.

One of her opponents in the race to replace City Commissioner Dan Saltzman already faced a lawsuit over her decision not to resign her post. A third candidate’s run raises questions for her boss, Mayor Ted Wheeler.

Here’s a comparison. RACHEL MONAHAN. JO ANN HARDESTY JOB: President of the NAACP of Portland SALARY: Hardesty is an unpaid volunteer.

NAACP rules require elected officers seeking

public office to resign their role with the civil rights organization—at least for the duration of the campaign.

The NAACP is heavily involved in politics but attempts to distance itself from partisan campaigns or particular candidates.

When WW asked about the conflict last week, Hardesty initially denied she was violating policy and then agreed she’d “step back” from her volunteer post.

“This is people looking for dirt,” Hardesty told WW. “Just to make this a non-issue, I will step back and ask the [vice president] to facilitate the next few meetings.”

LORETTA SMITH JOB: Multnomah County commissioner SALARY: $103,000 Since December, Smith has faced a series of questions whether seeking endorsements, fundraising and other campaign activities violated the county charter’s prohibition on officially seeking office before the final year of her term.

Smith now faces a lawsuit by good-government activist Seth Woolley over her failure to resign. He says either the county or the state should force her resignation. The lawsuit is expected to get a hearing in six weeks.

Smith maintains that the county charter only required her resignation if she had officially filed for office before January,

and she says she sought county legal advice before running.

ANDREA VALDERRAMA JOB: Senior policy adviser to Mayor Ted Wheeler SALARY: $74,588 Unlike her opponents, there’s no question Valderrama followed the rules of her job.

She hasn’t worked Fridays since the last week of October and has shifted her schedule to work longer days during the first part of the week. She takes vacation time for the four remaining hours of her work week on Friday.

But there’s been no pretense she’s continuing to carry the same responsibilities: She requested no late nights and no early mornings, and she off-loaded some responsibilities, according to the Oct. 12 memo in which she documented her request for a flexible schedule.

Valderrama shifted out of a role advising the mayor on most housing policies—including keeping eye on the $258 million affordable housing bond passed by voters last November. She continues to do work related to the city’s Office of Equity and Human Rights.

Her flexible schedule may raise more questions about her boss’s decision to effectively support her run.

Wheeler does not plan to endorse any candidate in the race, says spokesman Michael Cox, and is following city human resources rules.

Invasion of Privacy Portland State University researchers may have violated federal law by using the personal data of thousands of Portland-area K-12 students.

Plenty of graduate students dislike the research assignments handed to them by professors.

Ezra Whitman, a graduate student in the 2017 class at Portland State University, had a different problem with the homework he was given. He said it broke the law.

“I didn’t want to do it, period,” says Whitman. “It didn’t meet research best practices in any aspect. [We were] illegally harvesting data.”

The victims of this data breach? Kids in Portland Public Schools.

For two years, professors at PSU’s Graduate School of Education conducted a research project using unwitting K-12 students as subjects. The university has since acknowledged it failed to inform parents of the research and did not get their permission to access the student data. University officials say they are still examining whether any laws were broken.

Parents who send their children to public schools have an expectation that personal information about their kids—their names, grades and test scores—won’t leave the school system.

Instead, the personal details of thousands of Portlandarea students were pulled out of school computers and used as the raw material for a study—and parents still haven’t been told.

Throughout the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years, graduate students in the PSU program raised warnings that the project was poorly designed, racially inflammatory and possibly illegal. They were ignored.

“I had concerns about the assignment and the research itself,” Whitman tells WW. “After bringing up those concerns to the professors, no one seemed to care.”

The breach points to several failures of accountability— both at PSU and in the public school system.

Starting in 2016, two PSU graduate school professors asked teaching candidates to collect the personal data of students by taking it off school computers, including names, race, gender, disability status and whether they were learning English as a second language.

PSU says the aim of the study was to create better results for students of color, by changing teaching methods to reduce racial disparities in test scores.

But WW has exclusively obtained an internal report showing that in trying to reach that goal, PSU professors and grad students collected personally identifying data from minors without asking for the consent of their parents—as federal law typically requires.

It’s hard to say whether the study helped or hurt the kids whose classrooms were used as labs. But it appears to be a remarkable breach of trust.

that faculty had concerns the study asked student teachers to break the law.

And the city’s biggest school district, Portland Public Schools, still hasn’t—at the time of the publication of this story—told parents their children’s information was collected without their knowledge for a study. The district says it does not know of any legal violations.

PSU professor Susan Lenski and assistant professor Maika Yeigh, who oversaw the project, did not return WW’s requests for comment on this story.

The study began spring semester 2016.

Lenski, who oversees the Graduate School of Education’s curriculum, designed an assignment to help teach graduate students about equity in the classroom. Lenski asked other professors in the department to assign the project to their students.

Her aim was to measure whether student teachers could adapt their teaching strategies to help students of color, students learning English, and students with learning disabilities to perform as well as white students without language barriers or learning disabilities. (White students historically outperform students of color on standardized tests.)

To accomplish this, Lenski and Yeigh needed the demographics and test scores of students in public schools taught by student teachers.

But a 1974 federal law called the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act protects personal information that identifies individual students and bars schools from distributing that data to anyone without the consent of the students’ parents.

Emails, internal reports and the assignment outline show the professors instead asked their graduate students to take the data from school computers without asking for permission.

One hundred twenty graduate students were given the assignment. They taught in classrooms in 15 school districts in the Portland metro area, including Portland Public Schools. Most of them followed their professors’ instructions.

Whitman didn’t. He refused to do the assignment and filed a complaint with the university last spring.

(Records show some graduate students also viewed the assignment as offensive, because it didn’t track white students’ performance, grouped English-language learners with students who had learning disabilities, and asked student teachers to guess their pupils’ genders by sight.)

In spring 2016, a handful of students wrote essays objecting to the assignment and refused to participate.

The next year, professors told a new batch of post-grads, including Whitman, that the assignment was required to get a teaching license.

Yeigh initially gave Whitman a failing grade after he refused to participate in the research project. It took his filing a complaint with the university’s office of Equity & Compliance to change that grade to a C and halt the experiment.

After Whitman filed his complaint, PSU investigated the project. The final report chronicling the investigation noted in October that at “no time did Lenski provide FERPA training to [teaching candidates], and informed consent was not obtained from pupils’ parents to collect data regarding their students’ performance.”

Marvin Lynn, dean of the Graduate School of Education, wrote a Jan. 9 email to faculty members acknowledging there were concerns the assignment “required [teaching candidates] to violate FERPA laws.”

In the same email, Lynn blamed the possible violations on “our limited knowledge about FERPA.” Lynn declined to return multiple requests for an interview and refused to answer questions sent to him through the university’s spokesman.

PSU says it’s still not sure whether grad students were asked to break the law—or how exactly the law applies in this case.

“Concerns from some…students and faculty were raised about whether K-12 student data was collected or used in violation of FERPA,” says university spokesman Kenny Ma. “The university is continuing to review whether some PSU student teachers, who did not receive adequate FERPA training, could have collected student data without parental consent.”

Portland Public Schools denies any knowledge of the data breach. Emails show that the PSU had been “working closely” with the school district to prepare a workshop, held Nov. 14, 2017, to address the possible legal violations identified in the university’s review of the project.

Whitman says parents of the children whose data was illegally used should be informed of the breach, because they are the only people who can complain to the feds.

“They’re sweeping under the rug that they allowed this research to be done on students whose parents were unaware and whose data was being breached,” Whitman says. “The university allowed this to happen, and there were no repercussions because of it.”

Josh Leslie knows how expensive auto theft can be.

He paid $405 to get his 1997 Subaru Legacy out of a towing lot last year after it was stolen from the street in front of his St. Johns home.

Leslie says he was disappointed when he heard that lawmakers last week had once again abandoned legislation intended to drive down the skyrocketing number of motor vehicle thefts in Portland—blaming their failure on excessive prison costs.

Leslie, still smarting from forking over cash to retrieve his car, doesn’t buy that explanation.

“Cost doesn’t seem like a good reason to not have good public policy,” he says. “It’s one of those things where somebody is paying for it—and I’d rather pay for it as a taxpayer than as an individual.”

Legislators had a chance to pass a bill in the session that ended March 3 that would have made it easier to prosecute motor vehicle thefts, addressing one of the biggest crime problems in the state. Instead, they left Salem a week early.

The bill’s failure is puzzling, given that not a single legislator spoke out against it and two of the state’s most diametrically opposed lobbying groups—the Oregon District Attorneys and Criminal Defense Lawyers associations— both agreed it should pass.

As WW reported in November, Portland’s auto-theft rate is the third-highest per capita among major U.S. cities (“Car Jack City,” WW, Nov. 29, 2017). That’s in large part because of an Oregon Court of Appeals ruling that makes it difficult to convict defendants caught behind the wheel of a purloined car unless they confess to stealing it.

Lawmakers crafted a bill that would close the loophole—then left Salem without brining it to the floor.

Nearly everyone who worked on the legislation is eager to blame someone else.

“This bill was a priority for me this session,” claims House Majority Leader Jennifer Williamson (D-Portland), who sponsored the bill. “We’ve been working on this really since the end of last session.”

In 2017, a very similar bill died in committee because of a multimillion-dollar fiscal impact statement. The statement estimated the costs of incarcerating and supervising new prison inmates created by the bill.

Williamson, who also chairs the House Rules Commit-

tee, held a public hearing last month where several public officials testified in favor of the bill, including Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, and no one spoke against it. But the majority leader never scheduled a vote on it in her committee, which means it died there.

Williamson blames prosecutors, saying the Oregon District Attorneys Association wouldn’t compromise on two changes that would have reduced the estimated cost of the bill.

She suggested the bill either reduce the minimum sentencing guidelines for motor vehicle theft or create a new crime classified as a misdemeanor that would not carry any prison time. She says she was frustrated prosecutors wouldn’t give more ground.

But prosecutors had already given up a lot.

Ryan Lufkin, a Multnomah County deputy district attorney, worked with the Department of Justice and the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association to craft the wording of House Bill 4161. He compromised this time around, allowing his opponents to soften the bill’s language and require prosecutors to prove that suspected thieves were “aware of and consciously disregard[ed] a substantial and unjustifiable risk” that they were driving a stolen car.

“We are surprised, frustrated and disappointed that HB 4161 did not pass this session,” Lufkin says, “particularly because we worked hard with our partners to craft a

bill that ultimately was without any opposition in the rules committee hearing.”

Lufkin contested the estimated costs of the bill from the beginning. He testified in a public hearing that the Criminal Justice Commission’s analysis of how many additional prison beds would be needed was skewed. The CJC used 2017’s record-high arrest rates to project future arrest rates—but Lufkin told the Legislature the bill would start driving down motor vehicle theft if it passed and would reduce those numbers.

Ken Sanchagrin, who put together the CJC numbers, admits the estimate is only a guess.

“Instead of making assumptions of where [arrest rates] would go in the future, we decided to keep it flat,” he says.

“The bill may actually drive it down, but we can’t quantify that.”

Williamson didn’t fault just prosecutors in general for the bill’s failure—she named one in particular.

She pins the blame on Clackamas County District Attorney John Foote, who is locked in an unrelated court battle with the Legislature over sentencing reforms.

Foote filed a lawsuit last month challenging a bill that would reduce prison sentences for some property crimes, alleging the Legislature did not have the required twothirds majority to change voter-approved criminal sentencing measures.

Williamson says if Foote prevails, prison costs will rise significantly.

“I think John Foote’s lawsuit directly resulted in our inability to address this issue, because we are so uncertain with our corrections budget,” Williamson says.

Foote replies that Oregon’s prison population is decreasing, compared to its overall population. He points to the spring forecast of the prison population in the next 10 years that projected 4 percent growth in the number of prisoners despite Oregon’s population growing 12 percent.

“Rep. Williamson apparently thinks it’s good public policy to save money by not holding serious repeat property criminals responsible for their behavior,” Foote says.

“I happen to think holding serious criminals accountable is part of the basic services government can provide to its citizens.”

Williamson says she’ll reintroduce the bill in 2019.

Meanwhile, Portland police figures show 2018 is already on track to see as many motor vehicle thefts as last year if not more.

He wasn’t charged.

Here’s what happened.

n May 2011, a woman contacted the Portland Police Bureau to make an allegation against Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team and one of the most visible figures in entertainment and sports.

Her complaint? That Cuban had sexually assaulted her late one night at an Old Town nightclub.

The woman told police she encountered Cuban in late April at the Barrel Room, at 105 NW 3rd Ave., and asked him to pose with her for a photograph. While they smiled for the camera, she claimed, he thrust his hand down the back of her jeans and penetrated her vagina with his finger.

The alleged assault—and a full transcript of Cuban’s response to the accusation—are detailed in a police report WW obtained via a public records request.

The allegation has never previously been reported.

After an investigation, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office determined there was insufficient evidence to press criminal charges.

Seven years later, however, there is a national movement to examine the behavior of powerful men. And on Feb. 20, Sports Illustrated published a searing investigation of the workplace culture in the Mavericks’ front office, portraying an organization “rife with misogyny and predatory sexual behavior: alleged public fondling by the team president; outright domestic assault by a high-profile member of the Mavs.com staff; unsupportive or even intimidating responses from superiors.”

Although the article does not implicate him, people the magazine interviewed expressed disbelief that Cuban, known for his granular involvement in the team’s

operations—he even selects the towels players use in the locker room, according to a Slate profile—could have been unaware.

Cuban reacted strongly to the revelations, pledging reforms.

“I feel sick to my stomach,” he told Sports Illustrated.

“There’s a problem in the Mavericks organization and we’ve got to fix it.”

It’s unclear exactly what happened at the Barrel Room in April 2011. The 50-page police report portrays an alleged victim deeply upset—and Cuban adamant that nothing happened.

The woman, whom WW is not naming because she’s the alleged victim of sexual assault, agreed to a brief interview after WW obtained the police report and contacted her.

She says she never contacted the media or sought publicity or compensation from Cuban and has put the incident behind her.

“I really left it in the past,” she says. “I haven’t thought about it for seven years.”

Now married and in her mid-30s, the woman works in the medical field and enjoys hiking with her yellow Lab. “I have a wonderful life,” she says. “I’m a happy person.”

But she’s sticking to her story.

“I filed the report because what he did was wrong,” she adds. “I stand behind that report 1,000 percent.”

Although the DA decided not to press charges, the police report does provide an unusual window into the mind of a man who has talked about running for president and is familiar to audiences worldwide for railing at NBA referees and judging entrepreneurs on the ABC reality show Shark Tank.

Cuban’s attorney, Stephen Houze, strongly denies the allegations against Cuban: “These allegations are thoroughly investigated by the Multnomah County District’s Attorney’s Office and the Portland Police Bureau,” Houze said in a statement.

“According to the detailed prosecution decline memo, investigators interviewed the complainant’s boyfriend and female friend, as well as employees and patrons of the bar, and other persons with Mr. Cuban and no one observed any inappropriate behavior by Mr. Cuban.

“This incident never happened and her accusations are false.”

uban was in Portland on Friday, April 22, 2011, for a playoff game the following day between the Mavericks and the Trail Blazers.

On the night of the 22nd, he would later tell a Portland Police Bureau detective, he arrived around midnight at the Barrel Room, an Old Town nightclub known for its dueling piano players and rowdiness. That year, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission cited the bar for a “history of serious and persistent problems.”

Cuban initially said he didn’t remember anything unusual about his evening.

“We watched the Lakers game [on television] and then we went to that bar,” Cuban told Portland Police Detective Brendan McGuire in a June 8, 2011, telephone interview.

“And you know, that was pretty much it.”

The woman told police she arrived at the Barrel Room at about 11:30 pm with her boyfriend and another friend.

owner, as others were doing. She said she didn’t really know who Cuban was and didn’t want to wait in line for a photo.

But around 2 am, the woman said, she and her friend went to pay their tab and encountered Cuban, who was standing by himself.

“It was apparent he was very drunk,” the woman’s friend later told police. “His eyes were half closed, he was unstable on his feet, and he was slurring his words.”

The alleged victim asked Cuban to pose for a picture.

She told police that Cuban initially placed his right hand on her lower back.

“He then moved his hand down until it was on her buttocks,” according to McGuire’s summary of the alleged victim’s statement. “Cuban then pushed his hand down the back of her jeans and inside her underwear where he cupped his hand over her groin area and inserted the tip of his finger into her vagina.”

nitially, the woman told police, she was conflicted about what to do after the alleged incident.

The woman said her family urged her to report Cuban’s behavior. She waited more than a week before contacting police.

When she finally sat down for a full interview with a detective, more than two weeks after the alleged incident, the woman explained her reluctance, saying she hoped the report could remain confidential so there would be no publicity. She told police she did not want to be “labeled ‘that girl’ and involved in a sex scandal with Mark Cuban.”

The woman submitted seven cellphone images to police as evidence. (WW requested copies of the photos with the woman’s face obscured to protect her identity. The bureau withheld the photos, citing the personal privacy exemption of the state public records law.)

In one of his reports, Detective McGuire, a 22-year bureau veteran, described two of the photos as “significant.”

“In both images, Cuban’s right shoulder is lowered and he appears to be stretching to reach his arm down,” McGuire’s report says. “In one of the pictures, his arm can be seen behind [the alleged victim] and it appears Cuban is reaching down toward her buttocks.”

McGuire also noted the alleged victim’s expression: “Her teeth are clenched, eyes wider than the other pictures and brow raised showing a look of surprise and strain.”

After the woman told McGuire her account of the evening, the detective interviewed the two people who’d been with her at the Barrel Room.

The woman’s female friend said the alleged victim grabbed her by the wrist right after the incident, according to the police report, and led her outside. There, she told her friend what had happened. The alleged victim was “disturbed and angry,” the friend told police.

The woman’s boyfriend was “intoxicated and incensed when she told him of the incident,” the police report says. “He wanted to go back into the club and confront Cuban.”

But the alleged victim thought that since her boyfriend was drunk, allowing him back inside would only make matters worse. They left in a taxi.

Police also interviewed bartenders and security guards at the Barrel Room but none of them said they’d seen anything.

Then it was time to approach Cuban.

t’s unclear from the police report whether Cuban knew McGuire would be calling. But an 18-page transcript shows that rather than summoning a lawyer, the Mavericks owner engaged the detective in a lengthy, free-flowing conversation.

Cuban responded to McGuire’s questions with a firm denial that mixed shock, disbelief and self-pity.

“If she told five friends right there and then, then that’s what they’re gonna tell the judge and I’m gonna be fucked,” Cuban said. “Oh my God, I don’t know what to do.”

Cuban gave McGuire the names of two people who’d been with him at the Barrel Room: Lindsay McCormick, a television reporter who had worked for the Blazers, and Kevin Love, the NBA star who’d grown up in Lake Oswego and then played for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“There was tons of people around,” Cuban told McGuire. “I kept on…chest bumping Kevin Love.”

As McGuire continued his investigation, Cuban hired Stephen Houze, a top Portland criminal defense lawyer.

Houze went to extraordinary lengths.

Records show that three days after Detective McGuire called Cuban, Houze ordered a polygraph test conducted by former Miami Police Detective Sgt. Warren Holmes, a lie-detector expert. The test results supported Cuban’s denial.

A week after the interview, two urologists on the faculty of the George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C., provided Houze a written opinion that Cuban could not physically have committed the crime of which he was accused. “[Cuban] is a large male with large hands, making penetration without lubrication of the woman in the standing position virtually impossible,” the doctors wrote.

Doug Harcleroad, who served as Lane County district attorney for 25 years, says neither piece of information necessarily means much. Polygraph results have never been admissible in Oregon courts, he says, and medical experts’ testimony can vary widely depending on who’s paying.

“I’m sure you could find another expert who would say the opposite,” Harcleroad says.

Meg Garvin, director of the National Crime Victim Law Institute in Portland, says prosecutors often shy away from prosecuting sex crimes in the absence of physical evidence.

“There’s a higher bar than for other types of crimes,” Garvin says.

In July, McGuire presented the results of his investigation to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.

“The case detective and the complainant both agree with the conclusion there is no corroborative evidence to support the complainant’s allegation,” wrote senior deputy DA Don Rees on July 27, 2011.

“Because all leads have been exhausted and there remains a lack of physical or substantial circumstantial evidence,” McGuire wrote July 28, 2011, “I recommend the case be suspended.”

When Portland Police Detective Brendan McGuire telephoned Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban on June 8, 2011, to ask him about an alleged sexual assault, it was no ordinary phone call.

Portland police interview suspects every day, but they rarely tackle someone of Cuban’s reach and power.

Cuban, who has 7.7 million Twitter followers and, according to ESPN, is “the [NBA’s] most outgoing owner,” took McGuire’s call directly, rather than referring the detective to his attorney.

“How are you?” McGuire began.

“Um, you tell me,” Cuban replied.

The conversation that followed reveals the detective’s attempts to pry information from Cuban and the discomfort of the billionaire. McGuire gets Cuban to describe the evening, while initially withholding key information—that there are “significant” cellphone images of Cuban and the alleged victim.

“If what she is alleging were true,” McGuire said, “that would be a sex abuse in the second degree, which is a felony.”

“Oh my Lord,” Cuban said. “Oh my fucking Lord.”

Brendan McGuire: This is Mark Cuban?

Good afternoon. This is Detective McGuire with the Portland police.

Cuban: Hi, Detective McGuire. How are you?

McGuire: I’m good. How are you?

Cuban: Um, you tell me. [laughs]

McGuire: Were you ever at a nightclub or bar that had like a tent set up out in…?

Cuban: Why? What’s the situation?

McGuire: Well, there’s a gal who is alleging that you did some inappropriate touching while at that club.

Cuban: Are you serious?

McGuire: Unfortunately, yeah.

Cuban: No. I mean, I take pictures all night long. Look, there was a bunch of, there were multiple athletes there. There were a bunch of players there.

McGuire: Who else was there?

Cuban: Um, Kevin Love, there were a bunch of people there, and I don’t want to put out names. I mean, there were a lot of people there.

McGuire: OK. Cuban: Look, I’m, I’m, I’m not gonna sit here, I, how did she say I touched her?

Look, people, people hug me. People grab me. People grab onto me all the time.

McGuire: Sure.

Cuban: And it wouldn’t shock me if, you know, I like put my arm around somebody or, I mean, but I inappropriately touched? Like in what manner?

McGuire: Well, I’ll tell you what the allegation is. And, of course, keep in mind, Mr. Cuban, that I’m not sitting here talking to you, accusing you of anything.

Cuban: No, I understand that. You’re just doing your job. I understand that.

McGuire: Well, that’s the allegation. I take it…

McGuire: Right. The allegation is that she came up to you to get some pictures taken and while sort of doing [an] arm around each other picture-taking thing, you stuck your hand down the back of her pants and inserted your finger into her vagina.

Cuban: There were people taking pictures left and right.

Cuban: Oh! Hell no! You don’t think a hundred people would’ve noticed?

McGuire: Do you have any recollection of any of those particular instances taking pictures with anybody?

McGuire: Entirely possible. But I suppose it’s entirely possible, depending on how crowded it was and how many people were around, that no one would notice…

Cuban: I mean the bar was packed.

There were people around us the whole time. How could I inappropriately touch anybody?

McGuire: Well, I think you pretty much said it. You’re categorically denying any of this ever happened. Am I understanding that correctly?

Cuban: Yeah. That’s correct. *** McGuire: Do you know how much you had to drink that night?

Cuban: Yeah, I mean, I wasn’t sloshed

but I wasn’t sober either.

McGuire: OK. Cuban: But, I mean, but I remember the night. It’s not like I don’t remember anything.

McGuire: So, but there’s not, it’s not a situation where you could’ve done something that you aren’t aware of?

Cuban: I can’t imagine. Not like that, ’cause that’s not my nature. No way, and if I was drunk, I wouldn’t have been, you know, had the ambidexterity or whatever you call it to do it. [laughs] I don’t even know how you’d pull that off in the first place. You know?

McGuire: OK. Cuban: Oh my God, this is just [going to] kill me if she does something. I mean, I just, there would’ve been all these people around. There was tons of people around. I kept on not even head butting but chest bumping Kevin Love right there. There’s tons of people, all those bartenders right there were talking to me the whole time. I was not alone at all with anybody.

McGuire: Did Kevin Love leave with you?

Cuban: Yeah, ’cause we all went on, I mean, we all went on this bus.

McGuire: Right.

Cuban: And there was another lady there, Lindsey McCormick. That’s who brought us there. She’s a Blazer reporter. *** Cuban: I put my finger in her vagina?!

Cuban: But there’s no way that anybody is ever going to say or know. It would’ve happened right then if they would’ve seen or known something. They would’ve stood up. I mean, anybody can make this shit up.

McGuire: That is also true. I will certainly concede that. And then once I’ve conducted as thorough an investigation as I can, our district attorney would look at it and make a decision if they thought there was enough evidence for a prosecution.

McGuire: Do you have any, well, any questions that I can answer at this point?

Cuban: I don’t know. I don’t know what to answer. I mean, I mean, OK, it’s like, “Oh he just did it one time, only one time. Just happened to be this girl.” There’s no way to know one way or the other. *** Cuban: I get people pulling my head, you know, “I want to tell you something,” and they wrap their arms around me and…you know, grab my cro—whatever. Just people just, you know, I mean, it’s gonna happen all the time, but just over the course of time, people just do weird stuff.

McGuire: Sure, sure. Nothing that particularly stands out from that night, though? *** Cuban: And what is the law? What are the consequences on that?

McGuire: Well, if what she is alleging were true, then under Oregon law, let’s see, that would be a sex abuse in the second degree, which is a felony. It’s the lowest-level felony there is, but it is a felony. And basically, the legal definition of that is penetration without someone’s consent but not any force or threats or anything like that.

Cuban: Right.

McGuire: And then as far as the consequences, I mean, that obviously that’s way down

Cuban: And what’s your gut feel?

McGuire: At this point, I can’t tell you that.

And I can’t really ethically tell you that anyway.

Cuban: Oh that’s fine. That’s fine. That’s fine.

That’s fine. That’s fine. She said I stuck my finger up her crack or crotch?

McGuire: Yeah. *** Cuban: Unbelievable. Unbelievable. I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. I’m just gonna be like a pariah no matter what. Oh Lord. Why did this shit happen? Do you have any advice, any suggestions, Detective?

SUMMER BUMMER: For the first time in 18 years, MusicfestNW—one of the city’s biggest music festivals, which is owned and produced by Willamette Week—will not happen. The festival started in 2000 with a multivenue format in the mold of South by Southwest before moving to Tom McCall Waterfront Park in 2014 and switching to a more conventional two-day, singlevenue format. In 2016, MFNW merged with Pabst Brewing’s Project Pabst event. After last year’s installment, the two festivals separated. There had been discussions of MFNW returning to the old, clubbased format, but with such a tight turnaround for booking, organizers decided it was best to go on hiatus. MFNW hopes to return next year.

Representatives for Project Pabst did not immediately respond to inquiries about their plans.

THE MAN COMES AROUND: Recent Grammy winners Portugal the Man will play a free concert in Portland in support of nationwide protests against gun violence this month. The Portland-based band will perform in Pioneer Courthouse Square on March 24 as part of March for Our Lives, a series of rallies happening across the country, organized in response to the school shooting last month in Parkland, Fla. “Portugal the Man will be supporting these students as they demand that their lives and safety become a priority and that we end gun violence and mass shootings in our schools,” the local organizers announced in a Facebook post. So far, 4,100 people have RSVP’d on Facebook to attend the Portland march.

WHAT’S UP DOCS: Netflix is releasing a documentary series about Oregon’s infamous Rajneeshee cult. Wild Wild Country, which hits the streaming site March 16, is a 22

The Nicole Taylor Story follows Taylor’s time as an active member of the Woodland Park Bloods during the ’90s. Taylor produced the 23-minute movie with a former member of a rival gang.

OREGON BEERS, AWARDED: Willamette Week’s Oregon Beer Awards, held at Stark Street’s Revolution Hall, handed out medals to the best Oregon beers in 24 categories Feb. 28. Among the most notable prizes, Wayfinder beer was awarded Best New Brewery, and Pfriem deposed Breakside as the Best Large Brewery in the state. Meanwhile, Baerlic Brewing moved up a weight class—last year’s Best Small Brewery is now the state’s Best Medium Brewery.

Breakside and 10 Barrel topped the medal count with five apiece, split among different brewery locations.

Surprises included a Pilsner win for tiny Grain Station Brew Works in McMinnville, and a gold in hazy IPAs for Portland’s Ruse Brewing, the first year that category was awarded. In the hunt for recognition, crowded beer fests always reward the bold. But boldness can take many forms. For the SheBrew Beer Fest on March 3—dedicated both to LGBTQ causes and showcasing beers exclusively by femaleidentifying brewers—McMenamins distiller Lee Hedgmon made a one-off brew that beardy beer bros may never have conceived. Hedgmon’s Welcome Back to Oz, Bitches! has a color few beers achieve except on St. Patrick’s Day in the silly part of Irishtown. It’s green, it’s glittery, and though it’s billed as a Belgian-inspired tripel, its only true style is its own. The high-ABV, gluten-free brew was made at Ground Breaker with exotic bases like sorghum and chestnut. Its emerald hue comes from an addition of blue curaçao to the blond base. The result is surprisingly balanced, pleasantly estery, with rounded malt notes. The dangerously drinkable quaff is also guaranteed to be the only beer we’ve ever tasted inspired by a shade of makeup, the sparkle-paint and green hues worn by drag performer Todrick Hall in the defiant music video “Wrong Bitch.” It isn’t, however, the wrong beer. Overkill IPA

(Grains of Wrath) Last week, we tasted 115 IPAs to pick Portland’s best. But even with that many beers, there was a glaring absence.

Fat Head’s Brewing won first and second place in 2016, on the strength of the hop skills of its former brewer Mike Hunsaker. But Hunsaker left for the northern suburbs last year, and Fat Head’s Portland is about to morph into a new brewery called Von Ebert. But as of this week, Hunsaker’s back, baby! Alongside a terrific Pilsner called Luger, his brand-new Camas, Wash., brewery, Grains of Wrath, is already pouring three of the best IPAs in the area, including Hunsaker’s first hazy brewed on his own system. That Pandemic hazy is a pleasant piece of tropicalia, and his Eagle, Globe & Anchor IPA is a nouveau burst of melony hop. But it’s the Mötörhead-themed Overkill IPA that hit my sweet spot. Like Hunsaker’s previous Built for Speed IPA, it’s a seriously crushable showcase for tropical and dank hops, with light malt balance and just a hint of pine in the back.

You could drink this stuff till you slide off your chair. The first sip was a bit like hearing a song I’d almost forgotten existed—a little bit peachy, a little bit rock ’n’ roll. Recommended. MATTHEW KORFHAGE.

Just joshing you! We know that’s an Australian greeting, and that you’re from New Zealand, Australia’s Upside Down. And right now, you’re a long way from home. Of course, it’s for good reason: Last year’s Melodrama confirmed you as the valedictorian of the current international pop class—a too-smart-forschool prodigy writing party jams about how parties are mostly awful. The last time you came through town, you were just the buzz artist of the moment, playing a last-minute radio show at Crystal Ballroom with midafternoon sunlight streaming through the windows. Now, you’re filling Moda Center, with Run the goddamn Jewels opening for you. That’s quite a leap.

Despite all that, we imagine that you’re starting to feel a little homesick. Don’t worry, though. It is still possible to find pieces of your homeland here in the Pacific Northwest. So while you’re killing time before your show, we’ve put together a full day of New Zealand activities for you, hopefully to make this time away a little more bearable. You’re welcome, mate!

Visit Icebreaker!

Surely, the first thing any self-respecting New Zealanders would do while visiting Portland is make a pilgrimage to the American corporate offices of their country’s top producer of thermal underwear. Icebreaker started in Wellington and innovated the use of merino wool in high-end outdoor apparel, and in 2007 moved its U.S. headquarters to a building in the Pearl. The company doesn’t have the presence in town it once did, but it still has a retail outlet here, and we assume the mere sight of wool makes you tear up like Homer Simpson watching toilet water drain counterclockwise.

Grab a flat white at Proud Mary Cafe!

Technically, this is an Australian-owned cafe, but from what we understand, the coffee culture in New Zealand isn’t much different.

This newish shop—a spin-off of a Melbournebased roaster—makes the best version of Oceania’s favorite latte, the flat white, in the city, and we’ve heard the long black is good, too. And it serves avocado toast! You millennials love that stuff!

Walk Elk Rock Garden!

We hear you Kiwis are really into gardens, and also Scottish shit. What if I told you there’s a Scottish-style garden right here in Portland? Please, collect your jaw from the floor. Elk Rock Garden is indeed a beaut—a 13-acre maze of rocky pathways, ponds and an abundance of greenery, secreted away in the city’s wealthiest neighborhood. In fact, it was built by a 20th-century grain tycoon who once had business dealings in New Zealand.

Also, this is probably where you would live, if you lived in Portland. Because, you see, you’re rich!

Is soccer a big deal where you’re from?

Americans tend to presume ol’ footie ball is the only form of entertainment available in other countries, and it wouldn’t surprise me if, like, platypus racing is New Zealand’s actual favorite pastime. But your sometime national team goalie, Jake Gleeson, plays for our very own Portland Timbers! You’ll have to cheer for them on the telly, though.

Elijah Wood even visited when he was shooting a movie here.

Before moving to Portland, Nielson and his brother were in the Auckland punk band Mint Chicks, of whom you’re probably too young to have heard. But we know you’ve got a little mutual appreciation society going on—he’s sung your praises in the press, and you’ve tweeted his lyrics. Also, he once told me he’d “rather do anything in Portland than be a musician in New Zealand.” You probably feel the same. Maybe he’s got a couch you can crash on?

The Decibel Magazine They Might Be Giants Tour: Enslaved, Wolves [KINGS OF QUIRK] They Might Be Giant’s 20th album, I Like Fun, in the Throne Room, came out this January, and still Myrkur, Khemmis features the same bizarre, irrev-

erent pop songwriting found in most of the duo’s long catalog.

No longer the fresh-faced Massachusetts high school friends who reunited in Brooklyn in 1982 to form a unique platinum-selling partnership, the two Johns— accordionist Linell and guitarist Flansburgh—are each pushing 60.

Still they manage to push a lot of buttons—the title track from the new album sounds like Lou Reed fronting a children’s marching band, and the crudely animated video features a recurring image of a piñata shaped like the head of a white man with a red baseball cap, which is beaten in scene after scene until it loses a jaw and gushes blood. All manner of pagan subjects infuse the band’s latest album, The Hill Temple, with lyrics informed by Kiki’s English degree. In contrast, the music is made muscular by Greta’s fascination with heavy metal and the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack. Hex is a celebration of femininity that dips toes into riot grrrl, folk music and purposely imperfect indie rock stylings. [METAL SMORGASBORD] For the past six years, metal rag Decibel has organized an annual tour offering omnivorous cross sections of heavy music’s ever-evolving subgenres. This year’s no exception. Headlining is the mighty Enslaved, a Norwegian band made up of Viking offspring whose proggy but heavy sound has straddled nearly three decades.

Local Cascadian favorites Wolves in the Throne Room sub-headline in support of last year’s Thrice Woven, an album that found them returning to their spiritual black-metal roots.

Myrkur, the solo blackgaze project of Danish Amalie Bruun, is this year’s most polarizing inclusion, both because of her poppier sound and accusations of Islamophobia.

As always, the tour’s opening band—in this case, Colorado stoner riff factory Khemmis—seems too big for their billing, but such is the case with what’s consistently been the most stacked underground metal tour of the year. The Wedding Present, Terry De Castro [SHAMBLIN’ MAN] David Gedge’s blend of C86-ish jangle and raw, angular punk made George Best, the Wedding Present’s seminal album-length ode to their favorite footballer, a must-have for any avid collector of Brit pop. Gedge’s nasally deadpan remains among the greatest timbres of early U.K. indie along with Television Personalities’ Dan Treacy and the Vaselines’ Eugene Kelly, and could almost certainly be credited with influencing hundreds of self-conscious, awkward teen frontmen with limited vocal capabilities to embrace their limitations and just belt it out weird on purpose. Rachael Yamagata, Thom Lyons [SOUL POP] Whether delivering a heart-wrenching ballad of unrequited love or a rock-tinged war cry about romance gone wrong, Rachael Yamagata attacks every song with soul. Citing Roberta Flack and Carole King among her musical influences, her style certainly invites comparisons to both, but it’s highlighted by a husky alto voice that is uniquely hers. Her fourth full-length album, Tightrope Walker—recorded at her home in Woodstock, N.Y.—is a collection of what she describes as “empowerment and grit; tonic and risk.”

Son Lux, Gordi Wills [FEVER DREAM POP] Despite its layers of cinematic grandeur and uplifting textures, the music of Son Lux burns with a fire of existential dread that’s impossible to obscure. No matter how hopeful his songs often present themselves, the dense compositions of Ryan Lott—the classically trained composer who has helmed Son Lux for a decade now—are forever just one wrong turn away from abject terror. Lott punctuates his vulnerable falsetto with jarring, sample-based outbursts that leave listeners feeling as if they’ve been jerked awake from a fever dream—a direct expression of the life changes he’s undergone since 2015’s Bones. On this year’s Brighter Wounds, Lott explores the clash between the joy of fatherhood and the unshakable sensation that his child has been born into a dystopian hellscape. “I can’t bear another day like this,” Lott repeats on “Forty Screams,” the album’s plaintive opener. It’s a dire moment of humanity emboldened by a swirl of unsettling electronics, which may be the most succinct way to explain Lott’s indescribable hodgepodge of production techniques and motifs. Deathlist Fun (self-released) [DEATH DANCE] Given goth rock’s success over the past three decades, it’s easy to forget how post-punk, the genre it splintered from, was originally tailor-made for the club.

Jenny Logan toggles seamlessly between both on Fun, her third solo record under the moniker Deathlist. But the grooves that propel the album are far too buoyant to allow the inherent gloom to envelop its danceability. While prior albums employed live drums to underscore splashier dynamic shifts, Logan uses the metronomic precision of drum machines to give her compositions perpetual motion and plenty of headroom for other instruments to explore.

The record’s first half is one taut and sultry stomper after the next, with the rubbery grooves of “Want It” and the interlocking riot grrl guitars of “Until You’re Mine” making excellent use of the space Logan leaves between her dour crooning and the canned backbeat.

Things take a sour turn on the record’s second half, with the trifecta of “Machine Bright,” “Thaw” and “Live for You” channeling the downer vibes of Nine Inch Nails, PJ Harvey, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, respectively. The upbeat guitar on closer “Window” is a major detour relative to the rest of the record, but the track’s five straight minutes of reckless shredding still offers something meaningful. Whether it was a last-minute addition or a concerted effort to assert her status as one of Portland’s most sought-after bandmates is uncertain, but Logan sticks the landing regardless, wrapping up yet another album filled with subtle brilliance and an impeccable distillation of influences. Ezza Rose No Means No (self-released) [LADIES & GENTLEMEN, WE’RE COPING IN SPACE] Ezza Rose’s progression as an artist has seen the songwriter evolve from a folkier, roots-focused sound to the expansive dream rock of her latest LP, No Means No. Rose’s music is all the more interesting for these experiments in sound— whether she’s leading her crack band through guitar rave-ups or languidly paced, head-in-the-clouds numbers, it’s clear that Rose’s band is currently very much a rock-’n’-roll project. Rose emphatically repeats the coda “Don’t wanna tell you that no means no!” on the record’s title track, as the band around her works themselves into an equally furious guitardriven peak. A successful sea change in tone comes via the hypnotic post-coital buzz of “Baby, Come Down,” a track so dreamy you almost miss the darkness at the heart of the song’s lyrics. “Baby, come down, the sex was fine without it/Baby, come down, the music won’t play without you,” Rose coos over an arrangement that’s at once colored with a tinge of dread and foreboding and perfect for slow dancing. Much like the world in which we live, the romance Rose sings about has the potential for great beauty. But you have to be able to wade through the darkness to find it. DONOVAN FARLEY. Colin Jenkins Re: Fwd: FWD: (self-released) [LO-FI LOVE] Somewhat quietly, Rio Grands has pushed along the past few years as one of Portland’s greatest sunkissed lounge acts. Its leader, Colin Jenkins, has since moved into solo work while keeping a tight grasp on his stagecraft and colorful delivery. As the title suggests, Re: Fwd: FWD: is breezy and fun, replete with narratives about drug-dealer relationships in the midst of legalized bud, wobbly keys and shout-outs to Ghost Town DJs. Opener “Hard Candy” is a retro-minded banger in the mold of Breakbot, while tracks like “I’ll Be Right Here” feel like late-night phone calls circa 1978, fit with dialing keys and hushed vocals reminiscent of a bare-bones, bedroom-set Prince. Tracks like “Sleeping at the Palms” demonstrate Jenkins’ fun, deconstructionist side, paying homage to early R&B drenched in rippling rhythm guitar and Casio steel drum approximations. The finale, “Let Go of Love,” props up Jenkins as a true crooner, dropping gems such as “my heart’s like an empty sublet that’s always looking for a renter.” A flirtatious letter to the past, Re: Fwd: FWD: is an infectious example of marrying modern lyrics with throwback sounds. Consider Donavon Frankenreiter: If you grew up with any relationship to surf culture, then you probably first saw Frankenreiter on the TV surf show Drive Thru.

Outside his status in the surfing community, Frankenreiter has always made a hobby of playing around with music. At this point in his life, though, the roles have reversed. Frankenreiter has become a prominent presence in the singer-songwriter realm with his use of island instruments. Coin, the Aces ALL THE POP] What Tennessee quartet Coin lacks in creativity, it makes up for in sheer poprock indulgence. Anthemic songs with soccerlike chants? Check.

Accessible, rhythm-driven guitar and lyrics about lust and being awkward? Check. In many ways, it’s just another factory-born version of the 1975. But after multiple listens of Coin’s latest record, How Will You Know If You Never Try, I’m convinced there’s a slight edge the band could exploit more to differentiate themselves.

Verdi’s Requiem [CLASSICAL] After an aborted multi-composer requiem project intended to mourn composer Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi took the seeds of his contribution and grew them into a full-fledged litany. By the time it was realized, it had become a dramatic tribute to the Italian writer and humorist Alessandro Manzoni, who Verdi greatly admired. This funereal, operatic religious work is nearly ninety minutes long, for which the Portland Symphonic Choir and the University of Puget Sound Adelphian Concert Choirs have been summoned. Four soloists, two male and two female, deliver the libretto. Back in 1874 when the Requiem debuted, women were not allowed to sing in Catholic Church rituals, so Verdi issued an open letter, begging the Pope to make an exception. Barrett Martin Group [JAZZ-FUSION] Drummer Barrett Martin has an impressive track record within Pacific Northwest music. His beginnings found him with one of the pioneers of grunge rock, Screaming Trees, until their end in 2000. Working as a producer and session musician, his work can be found on over 100 albums to date, six of those with the Barrett Martin Group. Although he is known for his powerhouse drumming, Martin takes a different approach behind the kit with the group bearing his name, using complex global rhythms and taking control of his internal volume knob. Zakir Hussain and Rakesh Chaurasia [INDIAN MUSIC MASTERS] Zakir Hussain is regarded as the world’s greatest percussionist as much for his versatility as for his virtuosity. His fiery, inventive improvisations on the tabla drums were legendary even when he was a teenager. But Hussain, son and pupil of one of India’s most renowned musicians, Alla Rakha, long ago transcended Indian renown. Though he often collaborates with percussionists from other traditions, like the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart and Japan’s Kodo Drummers, this recital with a fellow Indian musician from a long legacy of masters, bamboo flute virtuoso Rakesh Chaurasia, brings Hussain back to his musical roots. BROCK ’N’ ROLL: “Let me hear you say, ‘I’m gay!’” Brockhampton ringleader Kevin Abstract demanded of the crowd greeting the sprawling hip-hop crew at Crystal Ballroom on March 2. “Let me hear you say, ‘Portland’s gay!’” Not really the kind of call-and-response you’d typically expect from a rap crew, but then, there’s little that’s typical about Brockhampton. The nine-member crew took the stage in matching orange prison jumpsuits, and by the time the group hit their stride with “Star,” a few songs into the set, the crowd had the floor rocking like an old whale ship caught in a squall. Abstract took command from the very start, bouncing from one end of the stage to the other with grace and charm during “Gold”—and, as already mentioned, he established himself as a master of call-and-response. With so many bodies onstage, there was some confusion. During “Sweet,” the boys kept getting tangled in little knots on one side of the stage or the other. At one point, Matt Champion skipped directly into an unsuspecting Dom McClennon. Most of the time, though, Brockhampton showed a natural gift for organic stage direction: During “Face,” pink-haired singer-rapper JOBA took center stage to sing the hook as everyone else fell back, then he retreated as each rapper took the spotlight in turn for their respective verses. The few miscues showed the crew’s inexperience, but the performance proved that their claim to being “the greatest boy band in the world” isn’t all that far-fetched. JUSTIN CARROLL-ALLAN.

Or you may just be privy to a free Blue Star doughnut from next door, just because. The cocktail menu is a pared-down list of classics, including a truly terrific apple brandy Jack Rose. The fivedeep beer menu pours Modern Times IPA or gose at a lower price than at the brewery. But don’t go in Friday looking for Small Bar. On the weekend, the space morphs into a wine bar called Muselet, currently devoting the month of March to female winemakers. And if you pop in on Sunday, March 18? You’ll be at a bar called Aperitif devoted to the wine cocktail.

At Function, every bar is a pop-up. Small Bar’s Nick Lopez and Reichele Caviteno are doing a trial run before maybe opening in earnest at a fixed location: They took over the worst bar nights in the week as a calculated trial measure. Meanwhile, the Muselet weekends are the resurrection of a French-centric wine spot that failed in its much larger space on the South Waterfront last year. Maybe you’ll never get comfortable at Function—but you can also walk into a new bar every few days without changing your seat.

Ten Minute Play Festival

Every couple of months, Monkey With a Hat On produces an eclectic mix of new short plays. The only rules are that the plays be 10 minutes long and relate to that festival’s intentionally vague theme. This time, it’s sports. Though that’s substantially less ambiguous than previous themes (one last year was simply “blue”), the resulting plays are still plenty wacky. The Holler Sessions

Now in its second season, Artists Repertory Theatre’s Frontier Series imports some of the weirdest, experimental theater for one-weekend stints. This time, it’s hosting Frank Boyd’s one-man show, which is equally an ode to and a skewering of jazz radio. Boyd plays an obsessive, manically enthusiastic radio host named Ray, who performs his show from a tiny, wood-paneled studio covered with Post-it notes. to a world brought to vivid life by Rose Riordan’s imaginative and impassioned direction. The play is set in Colchester, Conn., the cozy New England town where the play’s mysterious heroine, a woman known simply as “the Photographer” (Lena Kaminsky), lives.

She is our tour guide, a narrator who leads us to Colchester’s modest landmarks, from a lonely public library to a restaurant called Harry’s Place. She draws our attention to a variety of romantic vignettes, which include a goofy tale of a perfume maker (John D. Haggerty) lusting after an apathetic waitress (Tina Chilip) and a moody subplot about a hardware storeowning widower (Ryan Vincent Anderson) tormented by his resurgent longing for his high school girlfriend.

Riordan and her gifted crew make the town palpably alluring. Even a graveyard, complemented by projected silhouettes of gracefully twisted tree branches, is suffused with poetic grandeur. A swirl of lights and the sound of Peter Gabriel belting out “In Your Eyes” instantly teleports you to a tender, slow dance at a prom. What Kodachrome can’t do is overcome some occasional passages of grating dialogue. Scenes that should have been played straight—like a daughter discovering that her parents are getting divorced and the widower’s encounter with an eccentric gravedigger—are milked for jokes that feel intrusive in a story that cries out for more sincerity. Equally problematic is the homogeneity of the play’s love stories, many of which cling to a tired trope: the shy outcast fretting over the inability to master the art of flirting in complete sentences. But none of that detracts from Kodachrome’s entrancing images or Kaminsky’s boundless charisma. BENNETT CAMPBELL FERGUSON. Shaking the Tree is once again staging Shakespeare’s shortest, bloodiest and most quotable tragedy. It’s a perfect fit: The contemporary theater company thrives with macabre source material, and has a knack for making classics surprising with abstract, offbeat staging. The Pride

The Olivier Award-winning play tells parallel stories of a relationship between the same two men set in two different time periods: 2008 and in 1958. It’s the kind of play that requires both boldness and tenderness from a production team, which Defunkt Theatre are more than capable of providing. Despite the political relevance of a novel about society shaming a woman for a sexual decision, it’s hard to think of The Scarlet Letter as anything other than a book that everyone is forced to read in high school. So for her adaptation, Oregon playwright and composer Michelle Horgen decided to turn Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel into a musical. It’s getting its premiere at Portland Playhouse. The show doubles as a debut of the Playhouse’s newly renovated theater, a historical church in Northeast that recently underwent a multimillion-dollar overhaul. After starring in every other comedy blockbuster in the mid-’90s, Sinbad has taken some strange turns with his career. Thanks to a photoshopped VHS sleeve and a web forum-orchestrated plot, the internet became convinced he had starred in a genie movie that never existed. Meanwhile, he was filing for bankruptcy and playing drums in a band called the Stank Nasty Band under the alias Memphis Red. But in the past few years, he’s re-emerged as Sinbad the standup comedian.

And even though the lead clip from his most recent Comedy Central special is based on a heavily mined punch line (vegetarians), it’s refreshingly aggressive in a way that harks back to a less PC era of comedy without actually being offensive. Electric City is the kind of town with two bars and one restaurant, a scar of faded optimism near the Grand Coulee and the Colville Reservation in Eastern Washington. It is a real place, poised at the precipice where the West becomes booze-haunted, biblical noir. In Spokane novelist Bruce Holbert’s Whiskey (MCD, 272 pages, $26), brutality is so inevitable and unpredictable there it’s a form of gutshot comedy: God fucks us all, and then comes for the children.

Half-Native brothers Andre and Smoker, the children in question, are the kind of men who trap a bear with ham on a leash to see if they can get something for it. Their father, Pork, calls at night asking Andre to shoot him dead—with comically specific instructions—while their mom, Peg, might fit “a year’s living into a long weekend.” When Andre, possessed “of a cloudy fury behind his eyes” since the age of 12, shoots Smoker with buckshot, he is congratulated by a passing driver.

“I am Rufus R. Jones and I have a brother I wish I’d shot in the ass a hundred times,” he says. “It’s a pleasure to meet a man who followed through.”

The tragedy that defines that chaos is nonetheless real. Holbert’s prose crosses the coal-black comedy of Charles Portis with hallucinogenic Denis Johnson, a slapstick of grim manners above a howling abyss that is always audible.

The novel is structured like a biblical fugue, its themes cycling through three different intergenerational time frames.

“Genesis” is the hard-bitten story of Peg and Pork, who first bonded over a fictional beating Pork dealt to Peg’s ex. “Lamentations” covers the doomed marriage of Andre, while “Exodus” is Andre and Smoker’s hunt for the latter’s daughter, who has been passed as chattel to a cultlike group of religious fanatics.

The beauty and waste of the Northwest is described with knifecut lyricism. “They trekked through Oregon,” Holbert writes, “swam on a green-black gloom of cedar and fir and spruce, vanished in the shadows between mountain troughs…. They avoided Portland with a bypass that spilled them into the Columbia Gorge.”

Holbert is a writer known to few, but Whiskey arrives with the report of a rifle—a major introduction to the canon of the Pacific Northwest. It is by turns the funniest book I’ve read in months and the one that left the deepest wounds behind. The next two books I read will both be his.

WW: Was Tonya Harding a willing and open film subject?

Sandra Luckow: Yes, absolutely—because she had known me a long time and because she knew that this might be a way to help her continue skating. Because of the incredible pressure involved in national competition, you’re not really cameraconscious at that point—you have to concentrate on what you’re doing. After the competition even, she wasn’t concerned about being on camera, and I would have the camera, literally during that competition, on my shoulder for four days, and there was never a time when I was without it. So the camera became like my own appendage.

What kind of opportunities?

This is one of the reasons I’m doing the film in Portland—because I have to say, I’m really amazed that she feels that Portland owes her an apology. I was there. I saw the way the people of Portland from day one supported her and she threw it back in their faces in so many ways and she so disappointed them, and Tonya’s like, “Get over it, people. I was a victim.”

So you disagree she was a victim?

This idea that the skating community looked down on her and didn’t accept her is really all in Tonya’s mind. Because if you look at the skating record, she was never given lower marks than she deserved— except for maybe once. That’s certainly not the portrayal in I, Tonya. What’s shocking to me about I, Tonya is not the movie itself. I think it’s a well-made movie and very cleverly done. Because the writer

What was it like to know her back then, when you were making the film?

You have to understand that I didn’t learn anything about Tonya making the movie that I didn’t already know. I knew that Tonya performed best when she was up against a challenge. I certainly knew that she was the most talented skater. At the age of 5, she was landing axels, which was unheard of. By the age of 13, she had passed her gold test in figures, which was unheard of. Tonya was always very precocious, very much her own person in terms of who she was. She had a very tumultuous upbringing. She had a very tumultuous relationship with Jeff [Gillooly, Harding’s ex-husband]. But one of the things that people are not understanding is that she was given tremendous opportunities by other people in her life that she chose not to take.

In 1986, filmmaker Sandra Luckow devised an idea for her Yale thesis project: a documentary about a 15-year-old Tonya Harding and her first U.S. Figure Skating competition. It was eight years before the Nancy Kerrigan scandal. “Listen, this is like the Rocky story, this is like the American dream, this is the girl going the distance,” Luckow remembers pitching the project. “This will capture people’s hearts and then they’ll change their minds about figure skating.”

Thirty-two years later, in a vortex of scandal, fury and antihero worship, Luckow’s documentary, Sharp Edges, has emerged as something else: a portrait of a Harding unspoiled by controversy. The film will get its first public screening at the Tonya Harding Film Festival, which is a double feature of Sharp Edges and Breakaway, Harding ’s straight-to-VHS acting debut.

Luckow met Harding when she was 9 and Harding was 3½, when the two shared the same skating coach. WW talked to Luckow about the film.

Were you surprised that things happened the way they did with Harding and Nancy Kerrigan?

Everybody deserves a chance at redemption. I absolutely believe that. And I often wonder what would happen if Tonya would be like, “People, I really screwed up.

I screwed up and I take responsibility for it. I don’t like that I was banned from the only thing I ever knew how to do, but there are consequences to my actions and I’m really sorry that I disappointed you.” First of all, that would never happen—Tonya is not capable of that kind of insight. But I think there would be such forgiveness and real redemption for her if she could do that.

In the Marvel-ized Afrofuture of Black Panther, camo is replaced with kente cloth. There are sub-Saharan villages along with glossy skyscrapers, and the king’s guard is a team of bald female warriors with spears that collapse like lightsabers. It’s a well-crafted Marvel flick.

It’s a satisfying sci-fi story. But Black Panther eschews genre conventions where it counts. Director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) takes Wakanda’s tech savvy to Star Trek proportions, complete with a morphing, vibranium-laced panther suit and glowing weaponry. Coco Pixar’s transcendent fable follows a young boy named Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) who lives in Mexico and dreams of becoming a musician like his long-dead idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt).

Miguel’s family disapproves of his guitar-filled dreams, but Coco isn’t Footloose for musicians—it’s a Dia de los Muertos odyssey that sends Miguel on a trippy trek to the afterlife, where he seeks validation from de la Cruz’s fame-hungry ghost. Nestled beneath the film’s cheery mayhem, however, is an overwhelmingly powerful meditation on memory, mortality and familial love. Miguel may make some extraordinary discoveries in the great beyond, but the most beautiful thing in Coco is his realization that the only place he wants to journey to is the home he left behind. PG. Darkest Hour If this fussy, grandstanding biopic is to be believed, Winston Churchill’s crusade against Adolf Hitler consisted primarily of shouting and smoking his weight in cigars. That’s the narrative director Joe Wright (Atonement) tries to sell with help from Gary Oldman, who glowers and yowls mightily as Churchill. Their enthusiasm yields not a humanizing portrait of the venerated prime minister but a history-book myth that treats him more like a statue to be dusted off from time to time than a human being. Lady Bird In Greta Gerwig’s writerdirector debut, Christine, who insists on being called Lady Bird, is a high school senior growing up in Sacramento, which she loathingly refers to as the Midwest of California. Desperate to break free from mediocrity, Lady Bird slowly abandons her theater-kid friends for a group of rich kids. Gerwig has crafted a sprawling story in which every character is subject to Gerwig’s absurd humor as much as her deep empathy. What makes the movie so uniquely touching is Lady Bird’s tense interactions with her mom—it’s rare to see a relationship between two complicated women portrayed with such care and empathy.

Phantom Thread Reported to be Daniel Day-Lewis’ final film, Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest movie is his gentlest yet. A love story of sorts set in London during the 1950s, we are immersed in the House of Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis), a quietly eccentric couturier known for his daring and unique designs. Alma (Vicky Krieps) is his latest muse, a sweet-natured country girl who catches his eye and doesn’t want to let go. Although easily counted as another standout transformation by Day-Lewis into a persnickety, avantgarde dressmaker, if this is truly his last film, it is perhaps too mild an adieu from such a fierce actor. Maybe I’m just not ready to say goodbye without one more vein-bursting monologue. R. LAUREN YOSHIKO. Bridgeport, City Center, Fox Tower, Kiggins.

Red Sparrow Red Sparrow is the kind of film you know whether you’ll like before you see it. If you like pulpy spy movies and Jennifer Lawrence, it’s probably suited to your tastes. Lawrence plays Dominika Egorova, which sounds like a Russian ballerina’s name, and she just so happens to be a ballerina for the first 10 minutes or so. When injury ends her dancing career, her uncle Ivan (Matthias Schoenaerts) recruits her to become a “Sparrow,” a secret agent highly trained in the science of seduction. To explain why Sparrows exist, one character gravely says: “The Cold War did not end. It shattered into a thousand dangerous pieces.” Dominika’s mission is to get close to Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton), a CIA agent, and learn the identity of Nash’s prized asset, a mole in the Russian intelligence sector. The plot is generously seasoned with the salt

of the genre—double crosses, cobblestone European alleyways, shadowy rendezvous in parks and hotel rooms, foreign banks. There’s also a weird side tangent involving the heist of a stack of floppy disks that apparently contain some kind of important spy information. This ridiculous plot point is treated, like the entire rest of the movie, with deathly seriousness. Even if you don’t enjoy Red Sparrow in the same way the filmmakers intended, it’s a solid spy movie if you want an excuse to turn off your brain for two hours and 20 minutes. R. R. MITCHELL MILLER. The Shape of Water Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) has created a film that is beautiful but cluttered, visionary but formulaic and sympathetic to its kind, lonely heroine, but unwilling to let her spearhead the story the way that men have driven del Toro fantasies like Pacific Rim. That heroine is Eliza (Sally Hawkins), a mute janitor who works in a Baltimore laboratory where she cleans restrooms and, on occasion, the chamber where a dark-eyed, water-dwelling creature (Doug Jones) has been imprisoned. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri A year ago, Mildred Hayes’ (Frances McDormand) daughter Angela was raped and murdered. Now the case has stalled for the hotheaded Ebbing police department. So she decides to rent billboards that display three messages: “Raped While Dying,” “And Still No Arrests?” and “How Come, Chief Willoughby?” The residents of Ebbing are forced to choose between the mother whose daughter was brutally slain and the popular police chief (Woody Harrelson), who’s dying of pancreatic cancer. It would be easy to imagine the premise as a seriously dark and thoughtful drama. But in the hands of writer-director Martin McDonagh, what emerges is a seriously dark and thoughtful comedy. R. R. Home Is Where the Herb Is Little House Foods brings Portland’s culinary tradition into the legal cannabis era.

For average bakers looking to move their pot brownie operations into the recreational cannabis market, the largest leap is the transition from cooking at home to renting a commercial kitchen.

While living “everywhere but Portland” for 17 years, born-and-bred Oregonian Miranda Weigler had been quietly experimenting with caramel recipes, extraction ratios and business management. A few years ago, her mother died suddenly, bringing her back home at the cusp of legalization—and about eight blocks from the home of her future business, Little House Foods.

“I’ve been thinking about Little House for a long time,” says Weigler. “The stigmas around cannabis are shifting dramatically, the same way we saw society’s standards about gay marriage change from one side to the other—not to mention the enormous economic opportunities for Oregon.”

The latest tenant in a renovated Victorian house at 1902 NW 24th Ave., Little House Foods follows a culinary legacy in that space, starting with famed 1980s caterer Nancy Briggs, who transformed the first floor into a commercial kitchen and launched one of Portland’s first esoteric gourmet institutions, Briggs & Crampton.

Since then, the address has been home to restaurants like Bone and Broth and Cookie Monkey. Little House represents the next phase of modern dining in more ways than one—Weigler and her team have made their own updates to the house, working with kitchen manager Megon Dee-Cave to set up an oil-processing system.

“I know it’s cheesy, but we’re like the next generation of Portland food,” says Weigler.

Little House officially opened in 2016 following recreational legalization. Dee-Cave was her first hire, a dream candidate who relocated her family from Baltimore to find a place where her passion for baking and conviction of the medical potential of cannabis could earn her a living. She landed a job establishing edibles production at Chalice Farms before seeking a more culinaryfocused recreational kitchen.

“When Chalice was bought by a Canadian entity, things just started to change,” says DeeCave, “which is fine. That’s a part of the journey.”

After meeting Weigler, they began developing a caramel candy called the CaraMellower and a drizzle-friendly lemon curd. They have since released an infused olive oil and ghee butter, so customers can take the making of edibles into their own hands.

“The hope with the ‘Cook Your Own Cannabis’ line is that we’re taking the hard, complicated stuff out,” says Dee-Cave, “and people can just start with the fun part of cooking with cannabis.”

Little House’s products have found enough traction to be carried by 55 shops across Oregon, but Weigler has her sights set on the upcoming tourist season. With new consumers within Oregon’s borders, there is broader economic opportunity than the checkout counters at dispensaries.

“When people think about social consumption, they think of the NW Cannabis Club— smoking lounges. But there’s a lot of ways that can happen,” says Weigler. She notes how social consumption is too narrowly perceived, and that the next task is getting people to understand that the Indoor Clean Air Act doesn’t stand in the way of spas that use cannabis topicals, outdoor smoking patios or infused dinners.

They have outfitted and separated the fenced backyard of the house so that it can be a legally viable space for consumption events. Weigler’s efforts to help more ideas succeed in the industry is part of Little House’s mission, rooted in the philosophy of the former culinary trailblazers in that old Victorian who cooked the way they wanted, for the sake of culinary adventure.

“The name comes from my love for Laura Ingalls Wilder,” says Weigler, referring to the author of the Little House on the Prairie books.

“Being pioneers, being self-sufficient, plus the Oregon Trail connection—it just made sense to me.”

ARIES (March 21-April 19):

The men who work on offshore oil rigs perform demanding, dangerous tasks on a regular basis. If they make mistakes, they may get injured or befoul the sea with petroleum. As you might guess, the culture on these rigs has traditionally been macho, stoic, and harddriving. But in recent years, that has changed at one company. Shell Oil’s workers in the U.S. were trained

by Holocaust survivor Claire Nuer to talk about their feelings, be willing to admit errors, and soften their attitudes. As a result, the company’s safety record has improved dramatically. If macho dudes toiling on oil rigs can become more vulnerable and open and tenderly expressive, so can you, Aries. And now would be a propitious time to do it.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20):

How will you celebrate your upcoming climax and culmination, Taurus? With a howl of triumph, a fist pump, and three cartwheels? With a humble speech thanking everyone who helped you along the way? With a bottle of champagne, a gourmet feast, and spectacular sex? However you choose to mark this transition from one chapter of your life story to the next chapter, I suggest that you include an action that will help the next chapter get off to a rousing start. In your ritual of completion, plant seeds for the future.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20):

On April 23, 1516, the Germanic duchy of Bavaria issued a decree. From that day forward, all beer produced had to use just three ingredients: water, barley, and hops.

Ever since then, for the last 500+ years, this edict has had an enduring influence on how German beer is manufactured. In accordance with astrological factors, I suggest that you proclaim three equally potent and systemic directives of your own. It’s an opportune time to be clear and forceful about how you want your story to unfold in the coming years.

CANCER (June 21-July 22):

What’s your most frustrating flaw? During the next seven weeks, you will have enhanced power to diminish its grip on you. It’s even possible you will partially correct it or outgrow it. To take maximum advantage of this opportunity, rise above any covert tendency you might have to cling to your familiar pain. Rebel against the attitude described by novelist Stephen King: “It’s hard to let go. Even when what you’re holding onto is full of thorns, it’s hard to let go. Maybe especially then.”

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22):

In his book Whistling in the Dark, author Frederick Buechner writes that the ancient Druids took “a special interest in in-between things like mistletoe, which is neither quite a plant nor quite a tree, and mist, which is neither quite rain nor quite air, and dreams, which are neither quite waking nor quite sleep.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, in-between phenomena will be your specialty in the coming weeks.

You will also thrive in relationship to anything that lives in two worlds or that has paradoxical qualities. I hope you’ll exult in the educational delights that come from your willingness to be teased and mystified.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

The English word “velleity” refers to an empty wish that has no power behind it. If you feel a longing to make a pilgrimage to a holy site, but can’t summon the motivation to actually do so, you are under the spell of velleity. Your fantasy of communicating with more flair and candor is a velleity if you never initiate the practical steps to accomplish that goal. Most of us suffer from this weakness at one time or another. But the good news, Virgo, is that you are primed to overcome your version of it during the next six weeks. Life will conspire to assist you if you resolve to turn your wishywashy wishes into potent action plans -- and then actually carry out those plans.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

In the 2002 film Spiderman, there’s a scene where the character Mary Jane slips on a spilled drink as she carries a tray full of food through a cafeteria.

Spiderman, disguised as his alter ego Peter Parker, makes a miraculous save. He jumps up from his chair and catches Mary Jane before she falls. Meanwhile, he grabs her tray and uses it to gracefully capture her apple, sandwich, carton of milk, and bowl of jello before they hit the floor. The filmmakers say they didn’t use CGI to render this scene. The lead actor, Tobey Maguire, allegedly accomplished it in real life -- although it took 156 takes before he finally mastered it. I hope you have that level of patient determination in the coming weeks, Libra. You, too, can perform a small miracle if you do.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

In fact, my projections suggest that your ability to capitalize fully on the future’s rousing opportunities and exciting escapades will depend on how well you master the current crop of well-contained opportunities and sensible adventures. Making the most of today’s small pleasures will qualify you to harvest bigger pleasures later.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

If you saw the animated film The Lion King, you may have been impressed with the authenticity of the lions’ roars and snarls. Did the producers place microphones in the vicinity of actual lions? No. Voice actor Frank Welker produced the sounds by growling and yelling into a metal garbage can. I propose this as a useful metaphor for you in the coming days. First, I hope it inspires you to generate a compelling and creative illusion of your own -- an illusion that serves a good purpose. Second, I hope it alerts you to the possibility that other people will be offering you compelling and creative illusions -- illusions that you should engage with only if they serve a good purpose.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

I do a lot of self-editing before I publish what I write. My horoscopes go through at least three drafts before I unleash them on the world. While polishing the manuscript of my first novel, I threw away over a thousand pages of stuff that I had worked on very hard. In contrast to my approach, science fiction writer Harlan Ellison dashed off one of his award-winning stories in a single night, and published it without making any changes to the first draft. As you work in your own chosen field, Aquarius, I suspect that for the next three weeks you will produce the best results by being more like me than Ellison. Beginning about three weeks from now, an Ellison-style strategy might be more warranted.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20):

According to my assessment of the astrological omens, you’re in a favorable phase to gain more power over your fears. You can reduce your susceptibility to chronic anxieties. You can draw on the help and insight necessary to dissipate insidious doubts that are rooted in habit but not based on objective evidence.

I don’t want to sound too melodramatic, my dear Pisces, but THIS IS AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY! YOU ARE POTENTIALLY ON THE VERGE OF AN UNPRECEDENTED BREAKTHROUGH! In my opinion, nothing is more important for you to accomplish in the coming weeks than this inner conquest.
