High pressure cleaners
Why high pressure cleaning matters
Keeping things clean on board isn’t always easy and having the right tools makes all the difference. Effective, safe, and fit-forpurpose equipment is essential, and high-pressure cleaning systems deliver a fast and powerful solution to remove even the toughest dirt and build-up. By significantly reducing time and manual effort, high-pressure cleaning becomes indispensable for ship operations.
From general cleaning and engine rooms to cargo holds and surface preparation, high-pressure cleaning is valued for its speed, efficiency, and versatility. Vessels continuously face harsh environments and a wide array of contaminants, including salt, grease, soot, and rust. Choosing the right high-pressure cleaning system is therefore critical not only for optimal cleaning performance, but also for ensuring safety, operational efficiency, and the long-term sustainability of your vessel.
Effective onboard cleaning is about finding the right balance between mechanical force, chemical action, temperature, and time; the four pillars of the Sinner Circle theory. High-pressure cleaners are uniquely designed to maximize mechanical action, delivering powerful water jets that cut through dirt, oil, and scale quickly. When combined with the right temperature and cleaning chemicals, these machines reduce cleaning time and detergent use while improving cleaning.
Effective cleaning at sea starts with planning. Choosing the right method, equipment, and setup can save time, effort, and unnecessary wear on machines and surfaces.
At the core of every cleaning task are two key variables:
• The type of contamination (e.g. salt, oil, rust, grease)
• The nature of the surface (e.g. painted, metal, sensitive, rough)
Once these are defined, you can take control of your operation by:
• Selecting the right cleaning equipment for the job
• Adjusting pressure, water temperature, nozzle type as needed where applicable
• Choosing the correct chemical type and applying the proper dosage
• Applying the appropriate cleaning method (e.g. soaking, foaming, pressure washing, manual assist)

Three practical tips for success
Always prioritize safety and environmental compliance.
Efficient cleaning should never compromise crew safety or pollute the environment.
When using chemicals on vertical surfaces, start from the bottom and work upwards.
This way chemicals will not produce “channels” down the surface and will not run too fast off the surface. Use of chemicals with foaming properties adhere better and allow longer contact time.
Never allow rinsing water to flow over uncleaned areas.
The rinsing water can draw chemicals from the surface if running over non-cleaned surfaces. High pressure washing together with optimum concentration of chemicals will give the best results.
How does a high pressure cleaner work
A high-pressure cleaner transforms ordinary water into a powerful tool for tackling tough cleaning jobs. Here’s how the process works, step by step:
Water is pressurized by a pump with an electric motor.
The heart of every highpressure cleaner is its pump. When the machine is activated, water enters through the inlet hose drawing water from a tap or a tank, then flows through the pump which pressurizes the inlet water. The working pressure will cause very high water speed, and that is actually what is being utilized during the cleaning.
The outlet pressure depends on the valve setting and the nozzle size.
From the pump, the pressurized water is then forced at high speed through an outlet valve and into the high pressure hose all its way till the nozzle. The pump provides a constant volume of water, while the outlet pressure depends on the valve setting and the size of the nozzle attached to the end of the operator’s lance. The result is a forceful stream with the power to tackle dirt and grime.
The high-speed water jet breaks the bond between dirt and the surface.
As the water jet hits the surface you’re cleaning— whether it’s metal flooring, machinery, or deck areas—it effectively lifts and washes away dirt, oil, salt, and even rust. This method makes it much easier to clean large or hard-to-reach areas, saving time and effort while delivering a thorough result. The powerful flow also reduces the need for harsh chemicals and manual scrubbing, making the cleaning process more efficient.
Types of high pressure cleaners
High-pressure cleaners come in several main categories, each designed to match different cleaning challenges and onboard requirements. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right tool for every job.

Cold water Hot water Air-driven Stationary / Multi-pump installations
Cold water cleaners
Cold water cleaners are the most widely used pressure washers on ships, valued for their reliability and versatility. The temperature of the water jet coming from the nozzle is almost equal to the temperature of the inlet water. However, there is option for increasing the inlet water temperature for increased performance or a heating unit can be used to heat up the outlet water as well in some models.
