WILDY FRINGE The Wildy Fringe 2021 was an inspiring week of creativity, showcasing and celebrating the amazing talents of the Creative Industries girls. It was also an opportunity to demonstrate the legitimacy of the Creative Industries sector, which has experienced growth within the Australian jobs market - creativity being a highly valued soft skill. Making this connection between the industry and study has consistently been a fundamental part of our work. It is an inspiring and authentic learning program that will serve the girls well into the future. Monday, Creative Industries Day, opened with a Creative Industries Assembly, where speeches were given by old scholars, Martha Lott and Sarah Wormald. Martha has worked extensively across the sector as an actor, writer, director and producer and is the founder and current director of Holden Street Theatres. Finding a love for theatre at a young age, she has gone on to tour more than 70 productions globally. Many were part of the Edinburgh Fringe, and she has produced multi-award-winning Adelaide Fringe Festival programs - building Holden Street Theatre’s reputation as the ‘home of theatre’ in Adelaide. She is an amazingly creative artist, and we were very lucky and grateful to have Martha share her inspiring story. Old scholar Sarah Wormald is an emerging producer who started working with Closer Productions in late 2018, after finishing her university degree.

Sarah has been working closely with producer, Rebecca Summerton, across many projects. She was a producer’s assistant across the development, production and delivery of ABC Comedy Aftertaste as well as on The Hunting. Sarah has also assisted with the post-production, delivery and release strategy of Closer’s feature film Animals, and worked in-depth across Closer’s upcoming development slate. Sarah offered the girls wonderful insights and advice. The Assembly also featured a staff and student band, which played a fun and brilliant composition created by Jacinta Chronowski-Wong as part of her studies, called ‘Indy Goes to the Disco’. Inspired by the classic Indiana Jones theme song, it was musically magic and fun. Artist in Residence, Rosina Possingham, joined the girls on Memorial Hall Lawn at lunchtime to create a community piece of art. Inspired by the theme ’Explosion of Creativity’, the girls used paint to create a beautiful piece of community art which went on display in Hender Hall. All week the gallery displayed amazing ceramic works created in Art across the year levels, and wonderful animations created by Year 7s - all this while listening to the beautiful composition created by senior Music girls. This was a wonderful creative display. Monday night performances began with the Year 9 Showcase, which focussed on Theatre for Change, challenging the audience to consider topical issues.

This Showcase also featured a Welcome to Country - filmed, composed, and created as part of the Year 9 Music program. It was followed by the Year 10s Drama performance of Opening up a Fuzzwollops Frame of Mind - absurdist in style, and quite hilarious! Tuesday night offered the Year 7 Showcase, featuring short animation created in Multimedia - self-devised Greek theatre plays written and performed by the Drama girls. The Music girls took to the stage as a xylophone orchestra playing two stunning pieces. Wednesday evening was the Year 8 Showcase. They began with a performance of The Witches by Roald Dahl, followed by Year 8 Music performing three first nations songs, ‘Bele Mama’, ‘Inanay’ and ‘Sesere Eeye’. The evening was topped off with two comical plays offered by the Drama girls. The Fringe wound up on Thursday night with the premiere screening of Wesley - a mini-series created by the Year 9 Film and Animation girls. The red carpet was rolled out and the paparazzi was in full force. It was a huge success, offering many laughs. A great celebration of the girl’s creative work. The Wildy Fringe 2021 was a fantastic week of delights, inspiring the girls in their creative endeavours. Thank you to all who came and supported the events - and congratulations to all Creative Industries girls involved. Hal Bruce Head of Creative Industries
