Greetings Neighbors…

Dear Resident Members,

Soup’s on! The Island Grille has opened.

The team and I want to express an appreciative and sincere “thank you” to each and every resident for your support during a very busy first quarter. Like you, we are pleased that the vast majority of construction projects are complete and we can focus on improving day to day services across the Island. I am hopeful that you and your families were able to enjoy our scheduled activities across the Island through the Holidays and Spring Break.

Our staff has literally been at it 24/7 in an effort to please you. They have become a team in every sense of the word. A great vibe is palpable.

That said, as with all new endeavors, there are challenges in areas. Trust in the dedication of our staff-they will deal with it all and overcome.

While we are never short on diverse opinion on Williams Island, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. The level of service has increased substantially. Food quality and variety is beyond pleasing. During this period, you, the residents, are an important part of the equation.

We need your thoughtful and genteel input, your reaction and your suggestions. With your help we will continue to approach the sweet spot we all desire.

Come to the Grille with optimism and a smile.

You will get it returned 10-fold along with a great meal, served professionally and with warmth.

Where your expectations are not met, gentle suggestions will be welcome and responded to.

As evidenced by the weekly newsletter, Williams Island has a full dance card. We should be especially proud of our tennis community as they have banded together to honor a long time resident and Hall of Fame tennis player, Fred Stolle and in the process raise money for a wonderful charity, First Serve Miami. So find time to attend this event, honoring a unique gentleman, a world class athlete, raconteur and a great neighbor. At the same time, contribute to a fabulous cause!

With the opening of the Island Grille in March we have begun a new era of dining experiences in a beautiful venue. We are one month into daily operations and continue to learn about the nuances of operating the Grille and understanding the diverse expectations of the membership.

We deeply value your comments and suggestions and will continue to present creative, fun and quality food choices for your enjoyment while focusing on casual yet timely service. Please know that we will be making menu modifications as needed based on sales trends and your feedback so please make sure you are signed up to receive our weekly Monday News to keep current. I am happy to report that in addition to our traditional top sellers of Salmon and Burgers, our Pizzas have moved into the number two(2) seller spot. Make sure you tune into the TV channel to see “Ryan the Pizza guy” talk you through making our Pizzas!

March also saw the introduction of “AMR On Guard” services to the Island. I want to thank the Board for their vision and determination to bring this valuable service to Williams island. Along with our great Security team this elevates our Security and Response Services to a new level. Please make sure that you familiarize yourself on the services provided by visiting the website www.williamsislandclub.com with information on the homepage and the security page.

Looking forward we are planning new services from themed birthday parties to summer camps to themed dinner events and cooking classes. Capital projects will continue improvements in Tennis and the Spa along with improving Safety and Security across the property.

Communication remains a key opportunity for us so will be launching a new mobile app to provide another method to keep in touch with us and make staying current with Island Events easier than ever before.

I am confident that you will all agree that it takes a great team working together to provide positive services across the Island. While we have several programs in place to internally recognize exceptional service and “happy wow” moments, we need your help. We are asking for your participation in our “Golden Pineapple Hospitality Award and recognition program” by sending accounts of extraordinary efforts to doingitright@williamsislandclub.com There is no doubt of the positive impact of sharing a positive note from a member resident with a team member. The ISLAND GRILLE With a welcoming setting, artistic décor, and breezy terrace, the Island Grille brings style and flavor to Williams Island.

Having opened our doors at the Island Grille almost a month ago, both Damian and Chef Doug would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all our members for the genuine support and best wishes for the success of the Island Grille. Chef Doug will continue to develop his menu and specials with the freshest, highest quality products available. He is delighted by how some of the menu items have been received such as the Colorado Rack of Lamb, Salmon, Crabcake and member favorite Chef Ryan’s Margarita Pizza.

“We want everyone to look forward to upcoming changes on May 1st,” says Damian and Chef Doug, “The menu will evolve and new items will be added and, of course, member favorites will remain”. Damian is relishing the challenge of introducing the warm

professional service culture that he says “should be felt by every member when they walk in the door.”

Damian wants members to keep an eye out for the May Event Calendar, where he looks forward to organizing events that members will have fond memories of.

A native of Ireland, Mr. Collins joins us from New York City where he served as General Manager of the highly-acclaimed Bull and Bear Prime Steakhouse in the Waldorf Astoria.

He directed all operations, marketing, promotions, and the culinary team. He emigrated from his native Ireland 7 years ago. His past food and beverage experience consists of management positions in 5-star establishments such as the Ashford Castle.

The Castle was ranked Best Resort Hotel in the World in 2015.

Mr. Collins enjoys cooking and playing golf in his leisure time. He relocated to Miami this month with his wife and 3-year-old daughter.

WIPOA Board President Michael Josephs and COO Steve Matlaga opened the event which included Aventura City Manager Eric Soroka, Aventura City Commissioner and WI Board Member Bob Shelley and Aventura City Commissioners Gladys Mezrahi, Dr. Linda Marks and Howard Weinberg.

WIPOA Board Member and former City Commissioner Billy Joel was in attendance along with WIPOA Board Members, Jerry Cohen, Wilma Felder, Jonathan Evans, Barry Keyfetz, Charles Weiss and Alfredo Frohlich. The WIPOA Construction Committee was thanked for their hard work and dedication in making the Island Grille a reality. Members include: Jonathan Fels, Jay Eichel, Jorge Garcia, Ron Kettles and Jonathan Evans.

Member of the real estate brokerage community attended as well along with Aventura Marketing Council President Gary Pyott and Executive Elaine Adler. 2017 williams island davis cup

On Saturday, January 28, the Tennis Club hosted its Annual Williams Island Davis Cup. 48 of our most active tennis members participated in a Davis Cup style format. Teams played in mixed doubles.

Congratulations to team Brazil and team Mexico for making it all the way to finals. Team Mexico defeated Brazil 11-10.

Over 70 tennis members enjoyed watching and rooting for their favorite team. Following the exhibition, dinner at the Island Club was served and members were awarded.

Williams Island hosted the USPTA Pro League Match Friday, February 17th with 32 USPTA teaching professionals from area clubs in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Ft. Lauderdale.

Playing weaker players Playing weaker players is critical because you have to adapt to the differences in pressure when you’re the favorite.

It’s also a great way to work on new parts of your game that you might be hesitant to try against players at the same level.

There is nothing better than match play to work on your game. Not just tactics but how do you play emotionally? Do you have a lapse after winning the set or running off 8 games in a row? How are you at playing from behind, or the odd game down?

I used to start out most of my clinics- I’d ask “How many of you want to play with people better than you?”(Most hands went up) Then “How many want to play with worse players than you?” (No hands) Then I would say “Well, I guess you are the best player in this group, and I can’t play if I don’t want to play with anyone worse than me! Louie is next best, and he can’t play if he only can play with better players…” and so on to the last player. They all got the point, and happily played up, down and even :) I love this formula. Playing better players is great for developing your defensive skills, lesser players lets you work on new things and your offensive weapons, while playing at your level develops your competitiveness and mindset. Know what you need at any point in your match.

Practice with people where you may control the outcome and people that can challenge the outcome. You can benefit from both and they can help their games as well. I was told that by my coach when I first started playing the game. Rule of thumb, play matches 50% against same level players as yourself, 25% better players and 25 % lesser players.

If people only played better players no one would play. The player that thinks that way is the “lesser player” to the person they want to play.

Playing a better player makes you comfortable with losing; I always had my players play the person they hated playing the most. I became the enemy.

For the past 2 and a half months, Florida USPTA hosted the USPTA Pro League at several tennis clubs and country clubs in Palm Beach County. Thirty-two pros from the area competed in a team tennis format which was held at various clubs such as Woodfield Country Club, Wycliff Country Club, Mizner Country Club, Cascades Tennis Club and Boca Woods Country Club as well as our very own Williams Island Tennis Club. There were 4 teams, and each team was comprised of 6 players.

Carlos Triana along with his team represented Williams Island and won the finals vs Boca Woods this past Friday, March 31st. Congrats!
