Always ready to listen
Vienna’s underground network is steeped in history
U5 fully automated into the future
Ombudspersons act as a link between the construction site and the residents. They are always ready to listen to the concerns of the local residents, providing first-hand information and working to find solutions together. Each construction phase has its own contact persons who can be reached by local residents either at the construction office or by telephone.
On 3 November 1969, work started on the construction of the Vienna underground network on three lines at the same time. The first sections of the U1, U2 and U4 underground lines formed the basis for the network, which was continuously expanded in the following years.
Many people are already familiar with fully automated underground networks of other major cities such as Paris or Barcelona. After all, what is still a long way off for individual motorised transport has already been tried and tested on the underground, passing the practical test with flying colours. This is why newly built underground lines are almost always fully automated.
Please direct general questions about underground construction to u2u5@wienerlinien.at or by telephone to our customer service department at 01 / 7909 100.

Since the ceremonial opening of the first section between Karlsplatz and Reumannplatz in 1978, the network has grown to a length of over 83 kilometres and today has 109 stations.
Back to the future: From the first cut of the spade to Wienerberg Work begins on the construction of the underground network with the start of the first expansion phase of Vienna’s underground.

Let’s check out the underground. The underground was something fascinating for Vienna’s inhabitants many years before it even opened. The idea of travelling under St. Stephen’s Square was unimaginable. What a great idea to build a tunnel under the Danube Canal. Some 50 years after starting to build an underground network in Vienna, we are again at work in the heart of the city. Vienna is being given new lifelines so that the bustling centre remains well connected to the districts.

In a second construction phase, the U5 is to be extended to Elterleinplatz in Hernals and the U2 to Wienerberg.
The relevant planning project for the U5 extension was launched in 2018. Planning work for the U2 extension is expected to begin in 2020 so as to complete the U2xU5 intersection during the 2020s.
We are building the city of tomorrow.
The time for fully automated underground operations has finally arrived in Vienna with the construction of the U5, providing an opportunity for the operator of Vienna’s underground system to gain valuable experience in converting existing stations and building new ones: The stations from Karlsplatz to Rathaus will be refurbished and equipped with platform screen doors, and a brand new station will be built at Frankhplatz.
Fully automated underground operations have already been tried and tested internationally. In particular, systems with platform screen doors, such as the ones planned in Vienna, improve safety levels.
Did you know? Trains on the U1 to U4 have already been operating in a semi-automated fashion since day 1, with the speed being determined by the control centre.
Safer Platform screen doors only open once the train has pulled into the station. Delays caused by items on the tracks will also be a thing of the past.
More flexible Times of peak demand, such as is the case of major events, can be handled with greater ease and speed.
More personal Wiener Linien employees will be available on the trains and on the platform to help passengers, rather than performing routine tasks in the driver’s cab.
Technolologically speaking Vienna’s underground network was one of the most modern in the world at that time.
The X-wagon will be Vienna’s first fully automated underground train, but it can also be used with drivers on the U1 to U4 underground lines. The first trains of this new generation are due to begin test operations on Vienna’s underground network in 2020.
