Letter from the Editor

Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com

Next Gen Manifestation anifestation is a buzzword these days, but what does it mean? Well, the Marriam-Webster definition is “a perceptible, outward, or visible expression,” and the Oxford Dictionary says “an event, action, or object that clearly shows or embodies something, especially a theory or an abstract idea.” Basically, when something non-physical, like a thought, idea or desire, comes into being, meaning it can be perceived by the five senses, that thing is said to have manifested; a reality that before existed only in the mind has come into form, it has ‟an outward, visible expresson” and is ‟embodied.” Spirit Junkie author Gabrielle Bernstein says, “We are always manifesting. Each thought we have creates an energy flow within and around our physical beings. This energy attracts its likeness. So if you’re thinking, ‘I suck,’ then your energy kinda, well, sucks -- and you attract sucky experiences. The opposite experience occurs when you think high-level thoughts like, ‘I rock!’ Each thought you have informs your energy, and your energy manifests into your experiences. Your thoughts and energy create your reality.” Spiritual teachers like Gabrielle Bernstein and Deepak Chopra, M.D. have built their careers upon teaching principles of manifestation. There is a specific formula that can be learned which allows one to harness the creative powers of the universe and turn the invisible into the visible. In short, understanding the mechanics of manifesting is the same as understanding a powerful technology. The most widely agreed upon keys to manifesting are: being clear about what you want, invoking the feeling you would have if that was reality in your life, and then letting it go, knowing with certainty that what you desire is already on its way. Deepak puts it this way, “Most people think when I have this then I will do this and I will think like this and then I will be like this. But really we must be who we want to become and then we will think the way that person would think and do the things that person would do and then we will find that we spontaneously have everything we desire.” It’s the process of reversing the Having-Doing-Thinking-Being model to the Being-ThinkingDoing-Having model of living. It’s genius really. Dr. Wayne Dyer provides the example of an aspiring artist. He says, “If you want to be an artist then do the things an artist would do. Don’t sit at home or at your desk complaining about how you wish you were an artist; go where artists go, do what artists do, and then you will be an artist.” So what does all this mean for the “next generation” who has the privilege of being raised with this fabulous and empowering information? This summer I had an opportunity to see up close and personal, through my teenage daughter’s eyes, how the landscape of our world is changing and the truth that we have laid the framework for being able to manifest our desires quicker than ever before.

M

I was at our neighborhood pool with my son when I received a call from my daughter who asked, “Can you bring me some ice cream?” I knew she was asking because she felt like she might be getting sick and her throat hurt so I didn’t say no but instead I said, “Not right now, I’m at the pool with your brother. We’re about to leave, but then I need to make dinner so maybe after we eat I’ll run to the store.” She grunted into the phone and hung up. When I arrived home only 10 minutes later I found her happily eating ice cream. I was shocked, to say the least, and I stumbled over my words as I tried to ask, “What…? How did you...?” She shrugged her shoulders and said, “I tweeted ‘I want ice cream’ so a friend brought me some.” It was brilliant! She had employed the use of Twitter, of social media, to get exactly what she wanted without having to move a muscle, or even paying for it! And the best part was that without even consciously knowing it, she had displayed all the qualities of an expert manifester. She had calmly and confidently put her desire out to the universe, and then let it go, knowing it was already on its way, which of course it totally was. Social media allows everyone to be cosmic genies, and it allows us to rub the lamp. This next generation takes it for granted that they can throw their desires out to the universe and they are instantly responded to. Technology rocks. Electronic technology has become a vehicle for manifestation technology. If you think about the implications of this model it’s actually quite mind blowing. We have certainly exponentially increased our capacity to manifest our desires instantly. And speaking of manifesting desires, I’m thrilled about several things that have manifested recently. First, as a big thank you to the community for helping to manifest my dream of attending the Hay House Writing From Your Soul Conference in Ft. Lauerdale in May with Dr. Wayne Dyer, I’m offering a free Writer’s Workshop on Sunday, October 12th from 2-5pm where I’ll share what I learned at the conference along with other inside secrets I know from being in the publishing industry. The second thing I’m uber excited about is that ConsciousCon is coming to Cincinnati this spring. I’ve had the desire for a long time for an event like Louise Hay’s I Can Do It! Conference to come to our city, and now that desire is manifesting. Conscious-Con will be an entire convention celebrating the pursuit of consciousness. Panache Desai will be a keynote speaker, and so will yours truly. I’m over the moon about being involved with this event and look forward to the “manifestation” of it in May. More information about Conscious-Con and the Writer’s Workshop can be found inside this issue. I hope you can make it to both! Love and gratitude,

NEXT MEETINGS: SEPT 9 & OCT 14 Infusion Cincinnati, where Whole Living Journal comes to life every month, is one gigantic mastermind group! Through community discussion (town hall style) we connect through music and sharing ideas. Infusion is like nothing else. Infusion is designed to ignite, inspire, empower and infuse every person exactly where they are. In August, Rev. Kathy Engelhardt led the discussion on the latest spin on ‟the power of our thoughts” as written by Napoleon Hill in the newly released book Outwitting the Devil. We identified ‟drifting” as one of the Devil᾿s most useful tools, according to Hill, and discussed what it means to be the Devil᾿s number one enemy, an ‟independent thinker.” David Kisor and Andrea Cefalo gave a riveting musical performance of the highest caliber. If you haven᾿t made it to an Infusion meeting yet, come check it out. Infusion is only as strong as the people who attend. We want YOU to add to Infusion᾿s strength and diversity. Author and speaker Leah E. McCullough will facilitate the conversation and share the story of her journey from ‟Impossible to Succeeded” at the September meeting. Every Infusion meeting is donation basis and includes music, talk and community discussion about living with passion and purpose. 2nd Tuesdays 6:30-8pm at Rohs Street Cafe, 245 W. McMillan St, 45219. Leave extra time for parking, and plan to stay after for coffee and conversation. Be a part of the movement and let YOUR light shine! Join the conversation on Facebook: Infusion Cincinnati

“I just read an article by Jennifer Annenberg in Whole Living Journal on Spiritual Elitism (MayJune ῾14) that really impressed me. What a beautifully written piece that perfectly captures the thoughts I’ve had but hadn’t fully articulated. I teach an internship program for advanced Reiki practitioners. Grailville •

Turns 70

Grailville, a center for The Grail in the U.S. located in Loveland, Ohio on 315 beautiful acres of woodland, pastures and hiking trails, celebrates 70 years Saturday, November 1st, 6-9pm. The Grail is an international women᾿s movement which began in Holland in 1921 committed to spiritual search, social transformation, ecological sustainability, and the release of women᾿s creative energy throughout the world. Long at the forefront of environmental issues, feminist thought and liberation theology, Grailville empowers women through spirituality to become competent and compassionate leaders who make a difference in the world. In the 1940’s and 50’s, the Grailville Year’s School housed 60 women who lived simply, worked the land and were encouraged to “double your talents” as they prepared for leadership roles in world transformation. Their efforts created an ecologically friendly oasis decades before “sustainability” became a word. Older Grail members recall students saying, “I’d never done anything like this in my life, but it was expected that I could. We did everything – haying, plowing and planting. I had a wonderful sense of independence, competence and the power of women.” Focus in the 1960’s and 70’s shifted from the connection between the liturgy and the land to spirituality and personal growth with the Semester at Grailville. Designed by women’s studies and theology faculty from 20 American colleges and universities, it welcomed students from diverse backgrounds and focused on group interaction, active listening and conflict resolution. The 1990’s focused on organic farming with programs introducing the community to sustainable agriculture locally and in East Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. Today, educational outreach continues to promote conscious living via Grailville’s constructed wetland—an ecological wastewater system for 4 buildings. The first of its kind in Ohio, the site was used for research by the Environmental Protection Agency and University of Cincinnati’s (UC) School of Environmental Engineering. Continuing The Grail’s legacy of sustainable agriculture, a 9000-gallon rain catchment system irrigates the organic garden that supplies produce for guests in the dining hall and the Loveland Farmers᾿ Market. Earth-Share’s organic Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is also grown at Grailville. Each year, in honor of the women who first worked this land, Grailville recognizes achievements of current regional women farmers at the Farm to Fork: A Celebration of Women Farmers dinner. Inspiring creativity has been central to the Grailville experience from the beginning, with both amateur and professional artists living onsite to hone their craft as part of the Liturgical Arts program. The connection between nature, art and spirituality can all be experienced via Grailville’s hiking trails. Grailville’s “Celebration of 70 Years” is Saturday November 1st, 6-9pm. Ditch DRAMA the

and

Thrive

by Jennifer Kern Collins, MS, CPCC, PCC

C

onsciousness is the new frontier of happiness and success. We know this and yet, how well are we managing the thoughts that generate our level of consciousness? Our society is consumed with what I call the DRAMA paradigm, while we long for a thriving life. Now, I’m not talking about drama like in a theatrical play. I’m talking about the mental drama we steep ourselves in when we face challenges. In contrast, thriving is keeping pace on the physical plane with one’s spiritual expansion, which is actually what the challenges are for. They are life’s way of continuously inviting us to evolve. Many times, however, we use outdated methods in an attempt to get our needs met. However, even with good intentions, we end up holding ourselves in the lower levels of consciousness, which are characterized by hopeless-

ness, fear and/or frustration. Any action that emerges from these states will not be effective nor will they truly serve our lives or the greater whole. In order to live continuously expanding, harmonious, joy-filled lives, we have to become skilled at managing our internal worlds, including the drama that we enable. We need to learn to shift into higher levels of consciousness, marked by courage, contribution, curiosity, appreciation and love.

The DRAMA paradigm involves

thought patterns that are:

Disempowering: DRAMA thoughts take us out of our personal power and hold us captive in the lower levels of consciousness.

Reactive: DRAMA thinking has a

survival fight-flight-freeze compulsion.

Assumption-based: DRAMA

comes from stories we tell ourselves that may not be grounded in truth, but rather are based on our past negative experiences and their associated worldview.

Maladaptive: We develop DRAMA

thoughts and strategies as a means for survival, but they eventually prove to be ineffective and unskilled.

Addictive: DRAMA thinking be-

comes a neurobiochemical habit; we don’t know how to stop.

www.WholeLivingJournal.com

DRAMA manifests in a variety of ways and impacts our whole lives, including finances, relationships, career, and physical health. So it’s up to us to manage our thoughts and recover to an authentic, higher level of consciousness. Practice “GRATE-full” Living: GRIEVE. Let yourself feel the true emotion represented by the DRAMA so you can process the experience. RECOVER. Get grounded and recover to the present moment to evaluate what the DRAMA says about what you don’t want and what you do want. ALIGN. Connect to your Higher Self and into a feeling-good state, marked by relief, joy, appreciation, love, harmony. THRIVE. Act on the inspiration fueled by the alignment with your Higher Self. EVOLVE. Grow with the new experience the action takes you into, and live the expansion your soul. Shungite a

Powerful new Russian Stone

by Dak

I

n this new worldwide technological environment in which we are living, there is a need to protect ourselves from energy pollution. Radiation and electromagnetism emitted from microwave towers, high-tension electric lines, computers, appliances, cordless phones, and smart meters are all detrimental to our living organic physical and energetic bodies. The number of people affected by depression, stress, hyperactivity, attention deficit, cancer and numerous other maladies and diseases has increased exponentially with the increase use of the technologies incorporated into our lives. Since escape from these influences may not be practical or even possible, there is a stone from Russia, known as Shungite, which can neutralize these debilitating effects. Extensive testing by Russian and French scientists have proven Shungite to be a stone which transforms detrimental energies, boosts energy-balancing, and aids the regeneration of tissue. The beneficial properties of Shungite, are presented in the book, Shungite: Protection, Healing and Detoxification by Regina Martino, 2011, published in English 2014. Regina Martino is a geobiologist and bio-energy expert specializing in stones and crystals. She resides in Paris, France. Shungite, a form of primordial carbon formed around two billion years ago, is found only in Karelia, a region in northwest Russia bordering Finland and the White Sea. Although this stone has just recently come to our attention, its healing effects have been known for thousands of years by the local people in the region of Lake Onega. Its name is derived from a local village called Shunga. Recent testing at Russian and French laboratories have shown Shungite to possess protective, healing, and detoxifying properties with no known negative side effects. These unique properties of Shungite are caused by the rare presence of “fullerines”- hollow soccer ball shaped carbon molecules, discovered in 1985. Everything organic in our world possesses a natural right spin molecular structure, which can be seen in the twisting double helix of DNA. Anything artificial creates a left spin torsion field which unbalances our natural bio-energetic system. If any artificial influence (e.g. power lines, smart meters, cell phones) is present over a long period of time, our energy system is disturbed, unable to adjust, causing energetic dysfunction, leading to illness. The presence of Shungite helps to instantaneously correct the inorganic spin from left to right, making the technological energy compatible with our own energy, thus correcting radiation and electromagnetic pollution. Using different shapes and sizes of Shungite tools allows us to function without harmful influences of high-speed technology and harmful anomalies from the earth.

10

Living W h o l e Journal

A two-inch pyramid of Shungite has a right spin influence covering a seven-foot radius. One measuring four inches covers an area of twenty feet, and can neutralize the effects of electricity for an entire house when placed at the source of entry. By comparison, a two-inch diameter sphere has a nine-foot radius, and a four-inch sphere corrects an area of forty feet. Small Shungite medallions, adhered to our phones or placed in our vehicles, instantly convert potentially dangerous emanations. Shungite can balance cosmic and telluric (Earth) energies, (e.g. correcting fault line energies and stray electrical currents). Used with other minerals, Shungite can bring harmony to your living and working spaces. Shungite has been used clinically with promising results upon patients with the following conditions: illnesses of the musculoskeletal system, allergic skin reactions, acute rhinitis, cardiovascular disease, juvenile acne, osteoarthritis, hypertension, asthma, scurvy, liver diseases, and nervous system compromised by severe trauma. I have been experimenting with Shungite upon my sixtyfour year old body since March of this year, producing these noticeable results: increase in physical energy, full recovery from a constant shaking nervous condition, disappearance of scaly skin patches and age spots, rehydration of skin, reduction of facial and neck wrinkles, reduction of small benign growths, two thirds reduction of inflamed finger joints, smoothing of rough ridged fingernails, slowing down of hair loss, lessening of breathing congestion, and reduction in overall joint pain. I am not touting Shungite as a “sure cure” for anything, for we are all different structurally, chemically and spiritually. As with all things medical, Shungite should be used with caution and with vigilant observation of occurring changes. In my opinion, Shungite deserves our investigation. About the author: Dak has been a carrier of stones since 1988. His stone shop BLUE ROCK MEDICINE SHOW is open Friday, Saturday, and Sundays at historic Findlay Market in OTR. 513.349.9189. Undeniable Synchronicity by Verna Lee Bowen

O

ur newly purchased home was in the community of Queensland, Calgary, Alberta. I had scoured the real estate market for a house with the number six in the address because six has always been my number: - I am the 6th daughter in our family. - I was born on the 6th of the 6th month, in the 60’s. - When I met my partner, Doug, he lived in another city, apartment #206 in a building on the corner of 6th and 6th. - In 2006 I bought a new Jeep Compass, and Doug playfully pointed out, “Hey, Look! It’s a Compass; you’ll always be guided in the right direction.” As I drove my new vehicle off the lot the numbers on the odometer glared at me…my Compass had 66 kilometres on it! The street address of the only house that we both loved was #652 - just one six - nothing mystical about that. Disappointed to find no obvious “sign” that this house was the right choice, I decided I had to release my fanatical attachment to six, and simply appreciate our private yard, huge garage, abundant rooms, and sufficient space for my workshops. A week before we settled into Queensland, however, my sign arrived – synchronicity in the rarest form. I was monitoring my new website’s visibility online, and when I typed in ῾Verna Bowen,᾿ the first link that appeared in the search results read, “Verna Street, Bowen, QLD [Queensland District] Australia.” What?! I clicked on the link and gasped. There is a town in Queensland, Australia that has my surname and a street with my first name. To add to the already surreal, I recalled Doug’s words from when we met, “I used to tell people, ‘I never expect to find my one and only … she’s probably in Australia.’” Doug had unknowingly predicted this. Shortly after we moved into our house, a second synchronicity showed up. I had not noticed the number on the building across the street until one day as I was pulling out of the driveway. There it was, stark, obvious, and nearly smiling at me. The building facing me was #649. In Canada, our primary lottery is Lotto 649, so here I was staring at a symbol of abundance straight across from my new home. Those were bizarre examples that re-cemented my belief in connectedness. Synchronicity is all around us, whether we tune into it or not. It might be a phone call that shows up out of the blue right when we were thinking of the caller; a timely song on the radio that brings a warm healing; or a magazine article we stumble upon at just the right moment. Whether or not your signs are as uncanny as those in my story, they are there. Watch for them. Allow them to delight your heart and guide your life. Pursue

Peace

Stop Pacifying Fear

by Robert Michael Joseph fter eight years working as a police officer in Southern California, I went into ministry. It took me two years to stop scowling. I admit it took me a bit longer to stop profiling people. In time, I acquired the peace like the Apostle Paul encouraged his friends to have when he said: “Make every effort to live in peace with all men.” (Hebrews 12:14 NIV). “Seek peace and pursue it,” is the way the Hebrew Scriptures put it (Psalm 34:14). Peace with others begins within us.

A

The Tao Te Ching says: “There is no greater illusion than fear, no greater wrong than preparing to defend yourself, no greater misfortune than having an enemy. Whoever can see through all fear will always be safe.” - Chapter 46

Is Being Dangerous Sacred? A Badge of Honor? In the opening lines of the 2012 movie, Act Of Valor, the narrator of the story, Chief Dave, is reading from the letter Lieutenant Rorke wrote in the event of his death. Later we learn Rorke was killed in action. One of the things he writes to his then newly born son is something his father told him:

“Before my father died, he said the worst thing about growing old was that other men stopped seeing you as dangerous. I've always remembered that, how being dangerous was sacred, a badge of honor...”

Reversing the Inheritance of Fear

In our fear based society, this is what is portrayed in many movies and television shows. It seems, sometimes, fear is deemed necessary to stand up for oneself. Perhaps some parents feel compelled to pass on to their children the need to be feared by others. I’ve seen T-shirts and bumper stickers which read “Fear This.” If it read “Love This,” what would change in our souls and our society? In academics I have witnessed parents instill a fear of failure to ensure their children’s success. In athletics, some strive, unconsciously, to win because of the stigma of “loser.” Professionally, anxiety tends to be our motivation to not lose our job, or miss that promotion.

Alternatives to the Fear Approach

There are alternatives. What if we instilled in our children the joy of learning within their natural curiosity and attraction? What if athletics were approached from place of experiencing one’s fullest physical potential? What if the pursuit of excellence at work came from one’s deepest desire to feel a sense of meaningful contribution?

Teach Children in the Way of Truth

Pass on the skills to be aware of one’s surroundings; pass on the truth about the human condition, and the reality of unpredictability and imponderable events. Teach children to appropriately defend themselves and sustain themselves. But, let us not pass on to our children our insecurities and uncertainties rooted in traumas that created lies in us. Such lies grow into a fear-based approach to life that threatens to imprison future generations into believing the only solution to pacifying our own fears is to make others even more afraid of us than we are of them. To rephrase Gandhi – a fear added by more fear throws the whole world into darkness. Note: Robert Michael Joseph will be interviewed on Waves of a New Age WAIF 88.3FM on Tuesday, Sept. 16th, 3:304:30pm Eastern. Listen live at www.waif883.org. About the author: Robert Michael Joseph is a former police officer who spent 20 years in ministry. Currently finishing his Masters in Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy, he has a spiritual formation practice helping others discover who they are, what they want, and how to experience lives of meaning and purpose. The

GlutenFree

Life

by Cathy Rosenbaum, PharmD, MBA, RPh

C

eliac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder caused by a genetic intolerance to gluten (see “Celiac disease” by A Fasano and C Catassi in the New England Journal of Medicine 2012:367:2419-2426).

The Gluten / Wheat Connection

Gluten is the protein component of wheat (including spelt, kamut, semolina, and triticale), barley (including malt), and rye. When a person with celiac disease ingests gluten, specifically the antigenic gluten part called gliadin, it can cause gastrointestinal inflammation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, weight loss, fatigue, and iron deficiency anemia. Food malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies can result (see your primary care physician for more information on how to manage them). Over time, celiac disease can also cause liver disease, defective gallbladder emptying, and osteoporosis. Celiac disease may be a reversible cause of osteoporosis. Adherence to a gluten free diet is one way to help sufferers minimize overall symptoms and to maintain maximal bone mineral density.

partly restricted. With adherence to a strict gluten free diet, that risk is reduced.

Find Out Where Gluten Resides

It is important to find out where gluten resides! This means watching the foods you purchase and prepare at home but also those you consume from fast food establishments and restaurant dining. Foods like soups, sausages, and ice cream may contain hidden gluten as a filler. Be a good label reader and talk with your grocer and restaurant owners before you consume these food items. Finally, watch the gluten content in dietary supplements and medications.

Gluten Free Foods: Consuming foods certified to be

‘gluten free’ will help keep the daily gluten total to under 50 mg and not cause symptoms for most people with celiac disease. Gluten free grains include rice, millet, corn, quinoa, sorghum, and buckwheat.

Gluten Free Herbs and Other Dietary Supplements: A Strict Gluten Free Diet Reduces Risk

For perspective, oats are considered a type of gluten grain, but do not have the antigen that other gluten grains above do, so oats do not induce an immune reaction in the small intestine of people with celiac disease. However, many commercial oat products are contaminated with wheat, barley, or rye so it’s important to carefully read their labels. Look for products that are certified to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten (FDA’s ‘gluten free’ definition). Consumption of as little as 10 mg-50 mg gluten daily can lead to a clinical relapse in people with this condition. Celiac disease causes increased risk of developing some cancers if no gluten restrictions are maintained or gluten intake is only

It is estimated that there are over 60,000 dietary supplement products available worldwide. It can be difficult to find information about the gluten content in all of them. So, be a good label reader, and if necessary, contact the dietary supplement manufacturer directly for more information before you take any of these products, including vitamins.

Gluten Free Medications for Celiac Disease Patients:

Over-the-counter and prescription medications may contain gluten in their inactive ingredients. For example, sweeteners used in medications may be hidden sources of gluten. Some manufacturers cannot guarantee their medications are gluten free because their suppliers of raw materials can not do so, making it even more difficult for consumers. One way to find out more information about your medication is to call the manufacturer directly. Be sure to have the product’s lot number available when you call. Quick Test Your Adrenals

The following passage was excerpted from The All-Day Energy Diet by Yuri Elkaim (Hay House, 2014) The gold standard for testing the health of your adrenals is the adrenal salivary hormone test. You can get this test done for about $200 at a naturopathic clinic near you, or there are two very simple adrenal tests you can do at no cost right in the comfort of your own home. These will give you a good indication of whether or not your adrenals are working properly. The first test is called the pupillary light reflex test. Here’s how to do it: Stand in front of a mirror in a dark room. Take a flashlight and shine the light into one eye at a 45-degree angle from the side. Watch your pupil for 30 seconds.

When in the dark, your pupil should naturally dilate to allow more light to enter. When you shine the light, it should instinctively contract. The duration of the contraction can give you an indication of adrenal function. Here’s what your findings could represent: Stays constricted for more than 20 seconds = Healthy adrenal function Pulses after ten seconds = Decent adrenal function Pulses after five seconds = Poor adrenal function Immediate pulsation and dilation = Adrenal exhaustion

Now for the shortcut. Simply go from lying down to standing and notice how you feel. Do you feel light-headed or dizzy? If so, that is an indicator that your blood pressure has dropped and your

adrenals are too tired to do their job. About the author: Yuri Elkaim is a registered holistic nutritionist and renowned fitness expert. A former pro soccer player, Yuri is now on a mission to transform the lives of more than 10 million people by 2018. www.yurielkaim.com

nutrition and recipes from the kitchen of

The Healthy Foodies by Pama Mitchell and Mary Ann Barnes, MD

Shrimp and Avocado: A Combo to Love This issue we are featuring a salad starring two powerhouse ingredients— the mineral and antioxidant-rich Crustacean, shrimp; and what just might be nature’s perfect food, avocado. Shrimp is the most widely consumed seafood in the United States and is found in virtually all world cuisines. While some people avoid shrimp because of its high amount of dietary cholesterol, not all nutrition scientists agree that shrimp consumption will have a negative impact on your blood cholesterol. When we consider the

overall fat profile of shrimp, the high ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to the less desirable omega-6 fats makes shrimp a more attractive option. It is also a highprotein, low-calorie food source packed with beneficial minerals, especially selenium. If you are concerned about the environmental impact of eating farmed shrimp, check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s online advice about the best choices when you buy shrimp (www. seafoodwatch.org). As for avocado, most people encounter avocado in guacamole dip,

which we tend to eat in excess with a pile of fattening chips. But there are lots of other ways to enjoy it. Leaving aside the wonderful taste and texture of this fruit when it’s justripe-enough, consider its health profile. The fat in avocado is mostly unsaturated, which is beneficial for our brains and nervous system, among other positive outcomes. It is rich in the important nutrients lycopene and beta-carotene, along with a wide array of other antiinflammatory carotenoids.

Shrimp and Avocado Chopped Salad (Serves 4)

Instructions: Make the dressing (or use another vinaigrette of your own): in a small bowl, whisk together the mustard, vinegar and herbs. Add the vinegar while continuing to whisk, stir in the salt and pepper, and set aside. In a large bowl, mix together all the salad ingredients except salt and pepper (shrimp through cilantro). Add dressing and gently toss to coat. Adjust seasoning by adding more salt and/or pepper, if desired. Serve with tortilla chips (optional)

Option#2 Healthy Snacking Now that it’s apple season, our daily healthy-snack baggie has a new ingredient. That snack baggie often consists of sugar snap peas (buy the stringless kind, bagged, in supermarkets) and sliced bell peppers, of which we like the orange ones best. Make up a few zip-lock bags of these (or more ecofriendly reusable containers) and store in the fridge. In summer, add a few fresh cherries to each portion. But now, apple slices are perfect. Then just grab one each day as you leave for work, or send the kids to school.

Change is Certain by Carolina Zacaria

O

ften life presents us with circumstances that require us to adjust. Not embracing this inevitability of change results in feelings such as fear of being out of control, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. And yet, we tend to overlook the idea that life is all about change.

Nature Changes from the Micro to Galactic Levels

If we take a look around, we can see that even nature shows us how normal change is, and how necessary it is for the continuation of life - from the micro-level to the galactic level. Day changes to night, leaves change color marking the seasonal transition into autumn, and after the rain pours down the sun appears once again. Change is a certainty of existence.

Change is a Certainty of Existence

We come into this life’s experience in these little bodies that are subject to change until the day we die. However, our needs for control and security deny us the opportunity to understand our constantly changing nature, and that of society. If we look at the way our society has been built, we can see that the rules, rituals, values, and so on, are often created and driven by our own needs to be in control. CSLGC_ad_3.pdf

Accept and Release the Need to Control

Acceptance of our nature will help us to more clearly navigate our walk on Earth. We must accept that change is an inevitable, and necessary, component of our lives.

What We Know Today Isn᾿t What We᾿ll Know Tomorrow What we know, believe, and think today may not be what we know, believe, and think tomorrow - and that is good, because growth and expansion enable our true selves to manifest.

Staying Present Relieves Anxiety

We can embrace our forever-changing nature by becoming less rigid in our understanding. After all, flexibility is a requirement for our progress. Being present in the here and now will help us to better adjust to what life presents us with, eliminating our longing for the past and our anxiety of the future.

Natural Remedies for Our Furry Friends Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

erbs have long been used to treat and prevent ailments in people, but did you know that herbs can be used to treat a variety of common pet conditions as well? Our four legged friends bring us comfort, friendship and healing; all when we need it most. We can return the favor by using some of the same herbs we would use for our own healing to assist our pets when they are troubled, injured, or in pain. There are many natural, herbal and homeopathic remedies that are safe and effective to help our furry friends live longer, happier, and healthier lives. Below is a list of the most commonly used natural remedies that are safe for pets.

Boswelia - best known for its anti-inflammatory properties,

mile, skullcap, hops, GABA, L-Theanine, Vitamin B-1, and Licithin. It is for use in dogs only.

Rescue Remedy - Rescue Remedy Pet is an alcohol free variation of the original stress relieving formula Rescue Remedy. It can be used to create a calming effect in any stressful situation, and also to help with a variety of emotional and behavioral problems. It works well for animals that are afraid of storms; pets with separation anxiety; before going to the vet; or before stressful car and/or plane rides. It is safe for animals of all shapes and sizes. Rescue Remedy Pet contains a blend of 5 Bach Flower

Linda parked in her usual parking space at the office. She was feeling great and upbeat with how her morning was progressing …today was going to be a great day! As Linda stepped from the elevator she bumped into her boss, the Senior VP of Marketing, and with just a few words, Linda’s great day vanished. There was a time in my life when I could definitely relate to Linda’s situation; having a person, or a situation completely affect my mood. Unfortunately the roller coaster ride of happiness or sadness, determined by external factors which I allowed to influence my emotions, was very familiar to me. Of course, there is the other end of the spectrum which I never complain about; when I am having a rotten day and a nice surprise causes all my negative emotions to disappear. I began to wonder; who or what is really in control? Why do external factors have so much Power in my life? I decided to test a theory that I had been contemplating for a while. What would happen if I responded to situations instead of reacting to them? This choice however starts with the ability to control our emotions, which in turn dictates our

Intuition or ‟Knowing” Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

ne of our most informative and insightful senses is intuition, or “just knowing.” Somehow you “just know” your husband should not get on that airplane. But how do you get him to take you seriously? There have been no published reports of mechanical problems with that aircraft. In other words, there is no logical explanation of why he should not go on his scheduled business trip…except that you know he should not board that plane.

O

Pay Attention! Intution is Accurate and Powerful Perhaps you wake up in the middle of the night and instantly know your daughter has been in a car accident. No one has called, yet your intuition has relayed the message to alert you. Your intuition is very powerful and accurate if you pay attention to it and do not allow yourself to disregard, or downplay, it by only using logic, facts and figures. A fun, purposeful and fulfilling life is best lived when we use both our left brains (logic) and our right brains (intuition) to receive guidance and to help us make decisions.

Crown Chakra is the Receptor of Intuition

Our intuitive psychic receptor is our crown chakra, the major energy vortex that connects us with the Divine – our guides, guardians, angels, ascended masters and god/goddess. Intuition, along with clairsentience, clairvoyance and clairaudience, is a psychic sense that allow us to access the intangible - other dimensions and times (past, present and future) - to get information that will help us in this lifetime.

῾Knowing᾿ Good News Too

And, of course, lots of good news can come our way via intuition as well! If you start feeling excited and bouncy, trust that something good is coming. If a friend is suddenly very much on your mind, give her a call. Or just wait for her to call you.

There is always a reason when, out of the blue, someone is strongly in our thoughts.

Try an Intuitive Shopping Spree

When you suddenly feel like going to a store you haven’t been to in quite a while – and you ‘coincidentally’ find you have time in your day – just go there and then walk around. Once, while walking around a major department store on one of these intuitive journeys, nothing with Patricia’s ‘name’ on it could be found. When she asked, the idea in her head was to ‘go look in the wrong size.’ She did, and there was the perfect summer outfit, in her correct size, but on the wrong rack.

Build Your Intuition Muscle

Suddenly turning down a street you haven’t traveled before, or buying a ticket to an event you wouldn’t ordinarily choose, when prompted by an inner urging, can produce amazing results. Trust those little urges and you will find your life becoming richer and more fun. Your intuition gets stronger every time you trust that wisdom. And don’t forget to tell feel grateful for those unexpected joys. Stacey Leigh Mohr is bringing the gifts and blessings of our Cincinnati holistic and metaphysical community to her hometown of Santa Rosa, CA. 14 years ago she moved from Northern California to Cincinnati. Here she discovered a wonderful, connected holistic healing, metaphysical, New Age community that did not exist in Northern California. She learned, healed and thrived in the arms of this healing, supportive community. It became apparent to her that a great uniting force here is Whole Living Journal. Although now there are more holistic healers and metaphysicians in N. CA than there were 14 years ago, there is no publication like WLJ to connect, unite, nurture and grow the local holistic and metaphysical communities. Stacey will use her knowledge and understanding of holistic therapies, and her business and marketing experience and acumen to bring the gifts of the beautiful community we have here in the heart of our country to Northern CA. This fall she will open Waves of Change, a healing arts center, in Santa Rosa, CA, that will offer a unique, unbiased, comprehensive consultation service designed to empower clients to choose the healing path that is best for them. She will also, with the blessing and mentorship of Tara L. Robinson, publish a magazine modeled on WLJ (possibly even a version of WLJ itself!), to help nurture and grow the healing, holistic and metaphysical communities there. “If we want to heal the ills of the World, and bring peace to this planet, we must start with healing ourselves,” says Mohr. “As Ghandi said, ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the World.’” If you would like to support Stacey in sharing with other communities what we have created here, change lives and thus help heal our World, please visit www.Rockethub.com and search Waves of Change.
