Welcome to the Autumn 2019 Issue of Your Golfer Magazine As we move onwards once again into the cooler months of the year, I am sure many of you are looking back at a summer that provided some ideal conditions for Society Golf.

This summer also provided the avid golfer an opportunity to experience some fantastic professional golf. Shane Lowrys 63 at Royal Portrush will always stick in the mind as one of the best 18 holes of golf seen this year.

However, something even more remarkable was to come in the form of the Womens European Solheim Cup team.

With Europe not winning this competition since 2013 (and indeed only 5 times previously out of the last sixteen matches) it was always going to be a tough call, and with women’s golf becoming ever more popular in the game, the victory (secured by Suzann Pettersen) in the most dramatic of circumstances has really highlighted the role women are beginning to play in making the game more accessible for all. This is now clarified by Georgia Hall (Womens British Open Champion) who has been appointed A Wentworth Golf Ambasador, which can only go to reinforce the role in which women can play in golf. We hope to see more and more success from our homegrown talent as time goes by.

Raising cash for Coventry foodbank Citizen Golfing Society visited The Vale Golf and Country Club, Bishampton, Pershore Worcestershire for their latest tournament.

Citizen is a large Registered Social Landlord operating in the West Midlands, Hereford and Worcester and the Golfing Society combine raising money for charity with their love of the game. On this occasion they raised over £1000 for Coventry foodbank.

This was not the only magnificent achievement of the day as their CEO Kevin Rodgers managed something very rare when he scored an albatross on the par 5 (482yards) 4th hole. He drove off the tee and then took his 4 iron and watched in amazement as he achieved what sources indicate is a 1 in 6 million chance.

Carden Park Reveal Custom Fitting Studio with TrackMan Technology.

Carden Park Hotel in Cheshire has revealed their first golf development since announcing its 3-year strategic investment programme earlier this summer.

England’s Golf Hotel of the Year has unveiled a newly refurbished Golf Pro shop complete with a Custom Fit Studio and all-weather Custom Fitting Bay with world renowned golf software TrackMan. The new and improved Golf Pro Shop now offers TaylorMade, Ping and Green Lamb along with existing brands Under Armour, Nike, Adidas, Oscar Jacobson and more.

The Ladies of Llanymynech Golf Club Staged an interesting golf spectacle for train passengers.

On Sunday 7th July Llanymynech Ladies took part in an event at Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway in conjunction with Welshpool Town Council . The event was 'Theatre from the Train' 'The Theatre from the Train’ event will happen just once (Sunday 7th July 2019) and will not happen again, It was a one off.

From the train the passengers were enthralled and amazed at what they saw.

Sheep lining up at traffic lights, ancient battles, trees running around fields, unusual events and a spectacular golf display from the ladies were just some of the highlights There were many theatrical groups involved and it was something very special.

Student greenkeepers celebrate Toro awards success The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association is proud to reveal that Jason Norwood of Rudding Park Golf Club in Harrogate has been named the UK’s top student greenkeeper at the 31st Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards.

Alongside Jason, Tom Bromfield of Trentham Golf Club earned the title of Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year in just the fourth hosting of that prize.

The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards is a national contest hosted by greenkeepers’ association BIGGA and sponsored by turfcare machinery and irrigation manufacturer Toro alongside official UK distributor, Reesink Turfcare.

This year saw a record number of nominations for the prize, meaning the finals were as hotlycontested as ever.

Each year, a selection of the best student greenkeepers, selected from regional interviews hosted across the country, head to BIGGA House at Aldwark Manor in York for the two-day finals of the event. During their time at BIGGA’s headquarters, the candidates complete a variety of tasks designed to test their industry knowledge and their commitment to the profession.

Jason, 30, dedicated his victory to his sons Max, 4, Harvey, 1, and his wife Laura, who he has been with since he was just 16.

“I’m absolutely shocked and shaking,” said Jason. “ I can’t wait to tell my family. I put a lot of work and planning into my studies, particularly going to BTME this year and getting everything I could out of that.

“I haven’t really any words to say, this is the pinnacle of my career so far and the biggest thing I’ve ever achieved.”

As part of his prize, Jason wins a sevenweek scholarship at the University of Massachusetts in the USA, as well as a trip to the GCSAA’s Golf Industry Show in Orlando and a trip to Toro’s headquarters and R&D centre in Minneapolis.

The Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award is open to students under the age of 20. As winner, Tom receives a two-week work placement at the exclusive Vidauban Golf Club in France, as well as a trip to BTME in Harrogate.

Tom, 18, is an apprentice at Trentham in Stoke on Trent. He said: “I’m a bit shocked, I wasn’t really expecting that! But I’m really happy with the result.

Reece, the other apprentice at Trentham, was here last year and he was a big help to me. I’ve a lot of respect for not only Reece but also Ed Stant and Jim Fox at Trentham as they’ve really helped me out and they’ve given me the chance to get this award, so I can’t thank them enough.”

The runner-up in the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award was James Dawson of Oulton Hall Golf Club.

The runner-up in the Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award was Josh Marshall of Worcestershire Golf Club.

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association was created in January 1987 due to an amalgamation of the British Golf Greenkeepers Association, The English and International Golf Greenkeepers Association and The Scottish and International Golf Greenkeepers Association.

Today BIGGA has around 5,900 greenkeepers and turf professionals as members.

The Mere Golf Resort & Spa’s golf tournament ambassador Jack Brooks wins The Royal Birkdale Silver Goblet 2019 and awarded The North West of England Link Championship title 15th August 2019 The Mere Golf Resort & Spa’s golf tournament ambassador, Jack Brooks, has won first place at The Royal Birkdale Silver Goblet 2019.

The prestigious competition, which took place at Royal Birkdale Golf Club on Sunday 11th August, saw Brooks win by 4 shots with scores of 68 and 73, placing him 155 points clear at the top of the Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit.

The tournament was linked with The Hillside Pines Trophy which took place on Saturday 10th August at Hillside Golf Club. Here, Brooks took third place, making up a 4 round World Amateur Golf Ranking 72-hole Event, The North West England Links Trophy, in which he won by 10 shots, obtaining The North West of England Link Championship title. Brooks is currently ranked 249th in the Official World Golf Rankings 2019.

GOLF IN KENT IS ‘OPEN FOR BUSINESS’ Kent, England, September 2019; Following the successful staging of The 148th Open at Royal Portrush, Golf in Kent has declared itself ‘Open for Business’ now that Royal St George’s Golf Club is the incumbent host of one of the world’s great sporting events, which will take place on the east Kent coast from 12-19 July next year.

The county also has an abundance of highlyregarded inland courses such as the parkland layout at Canterbury Golf Club, located on the outskirts of Kent’s medieval cathedral city, which is considered to be one of Harry Colt’s finest ever designs in England.

Further inland still, there are two magnificent downland courses at London Golf Club created in the early 2000s by the legendary Jack Nicklaus which are just 25 miles from the centre of London and set in an oasis of calm and tranquillity overlooking the rolling Kent countryside.

There are different scenarios and penalties for players that hit the incorrect ball during their round of golf. These are outlined by the R & A:

Match Play

If a player makes a stroke at the wrong ball, he loses the hole.

If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played.

If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at the wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

Stroke Play

If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two shots.

The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.

Formed in the early 1900s, distinguished golfers to play the course and pass judgement in its early days include legendary golf course architects, Harry Vardon, James Braid and J H Taylor and 1907 Open Champion, Arnaud Massey.

After a period of neglect and following the end of the First World War, renowned golf course designer, Dr Alastair MacKenzie was commissioned to design and supervise the reconstruction of the South Cliff golf course.

Today, the course falls in to two parts, divided by the main road from Scarborough to Filey. The seaward side of the golf course is at one with the elements and represents a true test of links golf; whilst, the holes of the land-ward side of the course are laid out at the bottom of a rolling valley stretching southwards into the hills and on the slope of the ridge to the east.

The South Cliff clubhouse was later added in 1930 and the Professional Shop in 1937.

Recent investment in the golf clubs facilities has ensured that the course is in magnificent condition all year round and that the clubhouse is the ideal venue for all manner of social events.

Some have argued that a 9-hole course is not a full-course, but there are inherent dangers and safety issues from tighter 18-holes courses, such as narrow fairways, parallel or crossing holes. Well designed and maintained 9-hole courses can still offer all the challenges of a full-course, while at the same-time providing access to high quality facilities and driving ranges.

Located in the glorious Lune Valley near Kirkby Lonsdale in South Cumbria, Casterton Golf Course certainly ticks all of these boxes.

With more than 60 years of history as a golf course, in recent years Casterton has been radically improved and extended.

The 9-hole main course measures 5,802 yards and has been designed using the naturally undulating parkland with rocky outcrop. It is a Par 68 course with two Par 3’s, six Par 4’s and one Par 5 hole. All the holes have their own character and features providing a challenge for all golfing abilities.

The underlying rock is limestone which provides excellent drainage ensuring that the course is playable all year round, and it has a reputation for the excellence of its greens and the high standard to which it is maintained.

Review One of the very best, Little Aston Golf Club

Designed in 1908 by the 6-time open champion Harry Vardon and later re-modelled by Harry Colt, Little Aston was rated the number one parkland golf course in England in the 2019 Golf World Rankings.

We were lucky enough to play the Little Aston golf course in Sutton Coldfield, in August when it was in peak condition.

Having heard a lot of positive feedback about the club and course, we were really looking forward to playing here and it definitely lived up to out expectations!

On arriving at the golf club, we drove through some pretty exclusive real estate to reach the gated clubhouse where there was ample car parking and a very classy looking clubhouse building.

Walking around to the front of the clubhouse the first thing that strikes you is the unique putting green or rather ‘putting course’! If you are lucky enough to play here, you must experience the putting course - its many contours and unique challenges are fabulous.

There are also other very good practice facilities here including a brilliant chipping and short game area as well as an extensive driving range.

Prior to teeing it up, we had a good chat with Little Aston’s Head PGA Professional, Brian Rimmer who gave us a few good pointers to take out in to the course.

Iain Burns the Club Manager then came out to greet us. Formerly of the Forest of Arden, after talking to Iain, you soon get to realise how professionally run and well organised this golf club really is.

The club’s highly trained staff are friendly and make you feel most welcome at the prestigious club.

The Little Aston golf course itself was amazing with perfect weather for golf it was in tremendous condition throughout.

A 6,417 yard par 72 from the yellow tees with three par 3s and three par 5s, the back nine plays a little longer than the front although bunkers are plentiful over both loops of nine.

The fairways were lovely and firm as well as being beautifully cut – complemented by true and fairrunning greens with a few tricky flag positions.

Excellent course management is needed here.

The golf course’s surrounding are very tranquil and can be enjoyed as the course is relatively flat and easy-walking.

Needless to say, we were left very impressed with our Little Aston Golf Club experience.

Following our round, we entered the classy clubhouse building for some excellent food and drink all served by attentive staff with a smile.

ENVILLE GOLF CLUB With Mick & Richie A lovely day for golf at Enville Golf Club A warm sunny day in May. No better day to visit Enville Golf Club, nr Stourbridge.

And we are lucky enough to be playing here on a day when they have just finished hosting the England Ladies Open Qualifier, so the golf course in in pristine condition.

Enville Golf feature two eighteen hole golf courses, the Highgate (par 72 course), and the Lodge (a par 71 course). Both courses are set out to the highest European Tour standard and boast thirtysix uniquely contrasting holes.

Today we are playing the Highgate course, and what a gem the course is with a blend of heathland and woodland characteristics.

Before our round, we tried out Enville’s practice facilities which we found were of superior standard, including a 360 yard driving range and three short game areas.

Out on the course Standing on the first tee of the Highgate - a short 464 yard, par 5 - you could be forgiven for assuming you were standing on a green as the tee's are extremely well cared for, this course cannot be praised enough.

The surrounding long rough is heather and sits just off the second cut of light rough to catch any wayward shots. The fairways are shaped to perfection and can be fairly linksy in places, so allowing a good run.

We quickly found that the key here, is to take a lower club allowing you to get into a strong position for your shot into the green.

ENVILLE GOLF CLUB

This is clearly one of the best golf course that we have played for a while. The undulation and shapes of the holes are stunning, without a blemish on them. The Highgate at Enville is clearly a course that is maintained to the highest standard.

A lot of the holes on the Highgate are tree-lined – meaning that there is no need to take out the big stick! The four lengthy par 5’s on the course include the monster 9th hole which plays to every inch of its 586 yards from the yellow tees, requiring three well positioned shots to get there.

There are four par 3’s that truly wonderful holes to play, and with a couple of exciting par fours back to back on the 12th and 13th, this makes for a brilliant course. Albeit a difficult, but equally as fun challenge.

All members of the Enville team that we met during our visit were very friendly from the grounds-keeping team to the staff on reception.

We would strongly recommend a visit to Enville Golf Club - you'll not be disappointed, as this is a club and course is of the highest quality.

Cleeve Hill Golf Club With Mick & Richie A world apart Cleeve Hill Golf Club

Before embarking on a round at Cleeve Hill Golf Club, we knew that this golf course was going to be different to any other inland course we have ever played.

Perched on top of the highest point in the Cotswolds, Cleeve Hill is a heathland links course with 360 degree views of the picturesque Gloucestershire countryside.

We played the 6, 083 yard, par 69 off the yellow tees but with all the hills and undulations of the landscape, it plays a lot longer! The course encompassed four fantastic par 3s that are very difficult in the wind as well as some long, tough par 4s and one par 5.

The par 4, 12th hole which is stroke index 2 on the scorecard is a fantastic golf hole.

Cleeve Hill Golf Club Set on common land, the course is shared with ramblers, but this isn't an issue as the course is wide with loads of space.

Sat on the highest point in the Cotswolds, your game is really open to the elements and when the wind gets up, it's fantastic fun trying to play low shots and run the ball in to the long and narrow greens. Most of the time you also find your ball either above or below your feet so, a good test in ball striking.

The fairways are good and linksy as are the greens but beware, stray too far off the fairway and there is a lot of gorse that will swallow your ball up!

The golf club was easily accessed and adequate car parking was available. The Cleeve Hill clubhouse is basic with a great friendly atmosphere and the amenities you would expect from a traditional golf club including, great home-cooked food.

Very reasonable to play and a good fun day out with great views, Cleeve Hill is well worth a visit!

Value for money and an enjoyable day at Dore & Totley Golf Club Accessible from the south, Dore & Totley Golf Club is a really good parkland golf course situated on the outskirts of Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Head Professional, Steve Roberts who gave us a few good pointers before we went out!

We were apprehensive but, the course was not to hilly considering the area it's located in.

Our round on the mature Dore & Totley golf course exceeded expectations. The 6,331 yard par 72 feature three par 5s and three par 3s all with varying levels of difficulty.

There is not a boring hole on this course with eighteen truly unique golf holes. You will not ‘play the same hole twice’ as with many parkland golf courses.

You must to be accurate from the tees and pick where you want to land your tee shot to make for a good angle into the green. The greens are very good and fast but they are very well protected lots of bushes and trees in close proximity to the second cut.

The fairways were very good and well-manicured whilst the tee boxes were well presented with hole planners on each showing you the hole and where the trouble lay.

There was also lots of bunkers on this golf course with good quality sand in them, to catch any wayward approach shots.

The key to a good round at Dore & Totley is definitely in approaching the well-protected greens.

Aside from the golf course, Dore & Totley Golf Club was also home to a great practice area and putting green, a good clubhouse with friendly, attentive staff.

Penn Golf Club

With Mick & Richie Penn Golf Club – a smashing course!

Easy to find, on the outskirts of Wolverhampton set in Penn common, Penn Golf Club is home to a lovely heathland golf course.

First impressions were good as we drove into the club’s grounds through the prestigious electricgated car park.

The first thing we saw was an extensive putting green next to the first tee and the superblyappointed clubhouse building. The club’s Head PGA Professional Liam and his team gave us a very warm welcome and made us feel right at ease when checking in for our round.

The Penn golf course itself is a 6,174 yard par 70 of the yellows with four par 3s ranging in distance from 128 yards to 199 yards - and very nice they are to. There are two good par 5s requiring accuracy from the tee to make par.

The mature and well-established golf course is easy-walking and fairly flat – ideal for societies.

Fairly wide, the greens and fairways well maintained promoting a good pace for our round. However, there are plenty of traps just waiting to catch your ball, very strategically placed with additional drainage ditches crossing the fairways.

The course is split by a country lane that you cross to play the back nine then back across to finish off on the 18th. Our personal favourite hole was the par 4, 8th - stroke index 1 and a great golfing hole.

All in all, Penn Golf Club offered great value for money, ranging from £15 to £25 for eighteen holes, even at the weekend! It’s a smashing golf course with a great atmosphere!

As a downland course it has a ‘links feel’ to the way it plays, particularly in the summer months. The degree of difficulty varies with the strength and direction of the wind, and the strategically placed bunkers play their part.

Each hole presents its own challenges, and everyone has their favourites, but two of the most memorable are the beautiful par-3 5th and 17th holes – it’s always a delight to play them well!

Once you have negotiated the challenge, the focal point is the Clubhouse, with is its panoramic views out to sea, across the South Downs and towards Brighton. Reached alternatively via a 3.5-mile drive from Westray Airport in the North just off the B9066, the golf course has excellent sea views, within an easy tenminute walk of Pierowall. It offers a certain charm and unique golfing experience, but certainly adds its own challenges particularly a par 6 into a northerly wind..

It is a relatively small course of 3030 yards, with three Par-3s, three Par-4’s, 2 Par-5s and a Par 6. Despite being a challenging course par 37, it is suitable for all ages and abilities, and you will also find a putting green and club hire. Green fees are very reasonable, currently at £10 for 9 holes or £15 for a day ticket.

Throw in club hire at £3 per set and your day may very well be decided!

While the links course attracts tourism interest to Westray, it also provides an all year option for all of Orkney’s golfers. Plans have just been submitted for a clubhouse to further enhance this lovely 9-hole course, with its superb views over the beach.
