Welcome To The Summer 2025 Edition Of Your Golfer Magazine.

Following a rather productive Spring for a lot of clubs and courses across the UK, this Summer looks like becoming an absolute dream for golfers.

With the season now in full swing, courses across Britain are in fantastic condition. So, what better time to organise a golf break or society outing?

Within this edition, we bring you not only the usual news and club profiles, but also the introduction of our latest "Your Golfer" review team Gary and Kel whom have visited Northampton County GC, Kilworth Springs GC and Wellingborough GC. You can find their informative reviews of each course on pages 8 to 19.

As always we hope you enjoy this latest edition and wish you happy golfing throughout the Summer months.

Your Golfer Magazines Kilworth Springs Golf Club Review

It is early April and Your Golfer Magazine is visiting the idyllic Kilworth Springs in Leicestershire.

Set against the breathtaking scenery of The Avon Valley, this course is characterised by its large greens and wide fairways. The greens were in excellent condition and ran fast but true. Read on As Gary and Kel (AKA the brothers Ives) take you around one of the East Midlands hidden gems.

Welcoming wide first fairway a good loosener for the first drive of the day. Watch out for the out of bounds protected driving range to the left.

Short par 3 protected by par 4 generously large bunkers surrounding the green, suitable for a team nearest the pin competition.

Opportunity to really open the shoulders off the tee to this wide open forgiving fairway. Approach to the green from the left side of fairway will give most visibility to the flag.

Blind tee! If hit straight it will be rewarded with a wider fairway for the second approach in. Big hitters should watch out for the fairway bunkers left and right.

Needs a long, straight hit from the tee to avoid the fairway edge bunkers left and right

Tricky hole from the elevated tee needs accuracy to the tight green. Bunkers protect the green well for the miss hit tee shot.

Risk & reward for big hitters. This green could be in reach. For everyone else, stay left of the fairway bunker for a reasonable approach in.

Fairway slopes from left to right off the tee, naturally taking your ball towards the out of bounds. Approach shot is to a large generous green.

Slight dog-leg left to right. Accurate tee shot avoids the fairway bunkers

Short par 3, bunkers left & right of the green. Ideal team nearest the pincompetition once again.

Approach to the green is guarded by a bank to the left and a bunker to the right. Two comfortable regulation strikes will leave you with a birdie opportunity.

Clean strikes only off the tee to ensure you avoid the rather large pond. Dog-leg right to left requires a distance drive for visibility of the flag on the approach shot.

The brook crossing the fairway is definitely in play off the tee in this SI 1. However, the big hitters might fancy their chances of reaching the green for a birdie putt.

Tight fairway leading to a brook that should not trouble the average hitter. Tricky approach shot as the green awaits.

Definitely in range of the big hitters but beware the brook crossing the fairway to keep you honest with your drive.

A good, straight drive will leave you a nice approach shot in on this blind shot off the tee.

Watch out off the tee for the six bunkers placed in close proximity to capture the unlucky golfers drive.

A feature hole with a confident carry over the water required. Onlookers will be impressed if you put it on the green in one. Otherwise, at least the water fountain is impressive. A hole not for the fainthearted.

Your Golfer Magazine Wellingborough Golf Club Review

It is mid April and the Your Golfer Magazine reviewers are at Wellingborough Golf Club.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the grade one listed Harrowden Hall this course is simply stunning. As a well established venue you seem to be in constant awe of the views of the surrounding countryside. Read on As Gary and Kel (AKA the brothers Ives) take you around a course that will never fail to give you a rememberable golf day, whatever the occasion.

Hole One (Par 4 SI 17)

A fabulous approach to the first tee through the grounds of majestic views of clubhouse and course. Slight dog-leg right to left, comfortable opening hole for all standards.

Hole Two (Par 4 SI 5)

Straight hit required down a tree lined fairway. Watch out for the fairway bunker on the left. Green protected by bunkers. Don’t overshoot the green to avoid a nasty chip back up the bank.

Hole Three (Par 4 SI 11)

Fantastic view of the hole from the elevated tee. Careful club selection important to avoid the water hazard. An inviting hole for all standards of golf. Still work to do after tee shot on your approach to a sloping green.

Hole Four (Par 3 SI 13)

Another elevated tee gives good views of the green and the water hazard protecting it. Accurate tee shots will be rewarded, those that falter may well contend with water. A delightful hole to test all golfers.

Hole Five (Par 4 SI 7)

Out of bounds on the right can easily be fed by the sloping left to right fairway. Keep your drive left centre of the fairway but don’t over compensate to avoid the fairway lined trees on the left.

Hole Six (Par 4 SI 9)

Straight tee shot required on this blind drive from the tee. Stay out of the trees left and right of the fairway will reward you with an unhindered approach to the green protected by two bunkers front and left.

Hole Seven (Par 4 SI 3)

Up hill tee shot needs carry and distance to bring you into range on this demanding hole. High handicappers may struggle to reach this hole in regulation. Playing this hole into the wind will only complicate matters even further.

Hole Eight (Par 4 SI 15)

Well positioned fairway bunkers make this a difficult drive off the tee. An uphill second shot approach will carry you towards a 2 tiered green that is set with a nice backdrop view of the clubhouse.

Hole Nine (Par 4 SI 1)

Slight dog-leg left to right, don’t go tight to the right side of the fairway if you want to avoid the water hazard. A comfortable approach shot awaits good drives, but the green is guarded by bunkers centre and left. A tough hole earns its SI 1 status.

Ten (Par 4 SI 6

Another tree lined fairway. Avoid the fairway bunker on the night and aim for the windmill in the distance. On your approach to the green bunkers left and right are waiting to catch the wayward approach.

Hole Eleven (Par 3 SI 18)

Don’t think you’ll have it easy on this hole despite its short length and high SI. The bunkers surrounding this hole will give you plenty to think about for your approach.

Hole Twelve (Par 5 SI 16)

A fairly straight forward tee shot, miss the bunker on the left. You’ll do well to hit the green in two. Watch out for the little brook right and left of the fairway, well hidden until you stumble across them.

Hole Thirteen (Par 4 SI 12)

The elevated tee makes the hole link shorter and narrower than it actually is. An inviting fairway rewards the drive that finishes centre left. The right to left fairway slope will help drive that set off a little too far to the right.

Hole Fourteen (Par 5 SI 8)

An uphill drive with enough carry will afford the golfer a panoramic view of the left to right dog leg par t5. Don’t try to cut the corner it’s just trouble that awaits.

Hole Fifteen (Par 4 SI 10)

An elevated tee gives a good view of the first half of the fairway. Don’t duff your tee shot into the broke. A good approach is needed on your blind shot to the green. A lone bunker to the left is all that protected the green.

Hole Sixteen (Par 4 SI 14)

Take on the big oak tree. There is only really one line from the tee. Straight over the imposing tree. The fairway narrows as you approach the green, big hitters will relish the challenge of going for the green in one. But once you are on the green its slopes are savage.

Hole Seventeen (Par 4 SI 4)

Just need to hit a straight drive down this tree lined fairway. Centre left will give you an unimpeded route to the green. Approach to the green surrounded by large bunkers.

Hole Eighteen (Par 4 SI 12)

A nice picturesque finish to the course awaits on this hole. With water to the left and a fairway lined wall to the right, there is plenty to think about on this tee. Despite the short length the big hitters have plenty of hazards to be mindful of if they attempt the big drive to the green.

Your Golfer Magazine Northamptonshire County Golf Club Review

Nestled in the quaint village of Church Brampton lies one of the East Midlands' truly wonderful golf courses. Northamptonshire County Golf Club (voted in the top 100 courses in England) is a beautifully presented heathland course and has been open here since 1910. We at Your Golfer Magazine have been lucky enough to review the course in order to bring our views to our readers. Please continue reading below as Gary and Kel (our course reviewers) take you around this R&A Open Qualifying Venue.

Hole 1 PAR 4

Teeing off on the first you have a good open fairway to aim for and a large green for your approach. The green however is well protected by bunkers. Nice hole to start the round.

Hole 4 PAR 4

This narrow tree lined hole offers a short par 4 once again rewards the straight shot from the tee. However, beware of the valley in front of the green as it is quite deceptive and can trap any pitches that fall short.

Hole 2 PAR 5

You will start by teeing off towards a narrow fairway leading up to the green. Bushes and trees are waiting to grab any wayward shots, so it really pays to be straight with all shots on the hole.

Hole 5 PAR 4

This "feature hole" certainly favours the big hitter, however a blind approach from your average golfer will introduce quite a bit of complexity to this particular hole.

Hole 3 PAR 3

The first par 3 on the course. This has a green that is protected by bunkers left and right, again this hole rewards the straight hitter.

Hole 6 PAR 3

With this being the longest par 3 on the course, a good tee shot will reward the precision hitter, however with the green protected by trees, bushes and bunkers, this has to be the most challenging hole so far.

A wide-open fairway leads to a well bunkered left to right sloping and challenging green. This one really tests your nerve.

A very testing hole that will need all of your concentration. A good drive to the left of the fairway is ideal and will miss out the bunker traps on the right. The green itself is fast running, however a well-placed approach can be rewarded.

To start here you open up with a testing tee shot onto a narrow fairway. This will test the more daring drives as the well-placed bunkers will catch out any wayward tee shot.

Aiming for the high side of the fairway to avoid the bunker traps will give you a good chance of reaching the green in regulation. The small green in the corner needs an accurate approach shot to avoid the out of bounds behind and to the right.

An enticing wide-open fairway invites the big hitter, however hitting the green with your approach shot is a must as trouble lies in the shape of 3 protecting bunkers.

This is the shortest hole on the course but also tricky. The tee is much lower than the green with its narrowness adding an additional challenge to this particular hole.

A good drive from the tee is essential to bring the green in range, however the fast-sloping surface awaits the confident putter.

A relatively narrow fairway can make driving this hole somewhat of a challenge. A straight drive is well rewarded with only two bunkers on the hole. The green is also fairly tricky with valleys running through. Precision is a must to score well on this green.

A good positioned shot off the tee will be rewarded. Watch out for the bunker hazards in the middle of the fairway. The green is also well protected by bunkers. Accuracy is key once again!

A nice wide-open fairway from the tee. Try and take a left hand side line to avoid the fairway bunker. This will give you a nice approach shot to the green.

A bit of a signature hole and also a good hole for your groups nearest thee pin. With a river coming across the course a good carry will be well rewarded.

If you stay left of the fairway bunker, you will enjoy the walk to the clubhouse. Some well-placed bunkers await your approach shot and can therefore make you really think about how to handle your route to the green. A great finish to a fantastic course.

Overall, this was a great course, well laid out . Challenging yet rewarding with some outstanding scenery. Another bonus is the fact that due to the excellent drainage; this course may be able to offer buggies when others may struggle

The club house has all the modern facilities whilst retaining the traditional character of the building. The view from the patio area is delightful.

We highly recommend this course for a society outing.

Paddy Prepares For 882-Hole Golf Marathon In Memory Of Much-Loved Uncle Who Died From MND

PROFESSIONAL golfer Paddy Towson Sheehy is preparing to tee-off on his biggest challenge yet to help raise funds and awareness of motor neurone disease (MND).

In June, Paddy from Hampshire will take part in a Golf Marathon Challenge which will see him play seven rounds of golf, on seven golf courses, in seven days, raising funds for the MND Association in memory of his Uncle Alan, who died from MND in 2019.

Alan lived in Yorkshire, and the week-long challenge will be dedicated to his memory, finishing at Baildon Golf Club on 15 June where he played for many years. The challenge will begin on 9 June at Headingley Golf Club in Leeds, as a tribute to Rob Burrow CBE who died from MND in June last year.

Paddy explained: “I have very strong family connections to Yorkshire, particularly around Leeds and Bradford, so this challenge is very special to me and is very personal.

“I took part in the very first Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon in 2023, and, as we’re very much a family of Leeds Rhinos fans, I’ve been heavily inspired by Rob, Kevin Sinfield and the huge success of his 7 in 7 in 7 challenges.

“I want to raise as much money as I possibly can to support people living with MND and help fund research into a cure. By using my love of golf and combining it with the equivalent of a marathon every day, I hope we can do just that.”

During the week, Paddy will play an incredible 882 holes, covering a distance of approximately 177 miles.

The MND Association’s Sarah Armstrong, who is supporting Paddy’s extraordinary challenge said every penny raised during the challenge would make a huge difference to the MND community.

She said: “We are so grateful to people like Paddy, who go to extraordinary lengths to support the MND community and the Association’s work – without them, their endless imagination, boundless energy and commitment, none of the work we do would be possible.

“This challenge is particularly meaningful in so many ways and will help to raise important funds and awareness of this devastating disease.

“We’re really proud to be supporting Paddy, and we all wish him the very best of luck for June!”

We Urge All Golfers To Support Our Greenkeepers As They Deal With The Driest Spring In 70 Years

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) is calling on golf clubs and golfers across the UK to support their members as we face our driest spring for decades.

Following some exceptionally wet recent winters, the spring of 2025 has brought a stark contrast. According to the Met Office, rainfall across many regions has been at historic lows. Wales recorded its driest March since 1944, while East Anglia experienced its second-driest March on record. With May showing little improvement, greenkeepers are under extreme pressure to maintain playing surfaces amid growing turf stress.

David Byron, Head Greenkeeper at Thorndon Park Golf Club in Essex, said:

“It’s very, very dry. It’s the driest start to spring in nearly 70 years. We’ve had almost no rain, and what we have had has come in just one hit.

“In our fairways, we’re down to about 3–4% moisture content. Normally, you’d want 10 to 15% for the grass species we have.”

These conditions are presenting major challenges for turf recovery and maintenance. Areas without irrigation, such as fairways, are suffering, while teams attempt to preserve greens and tees with limited water resources.

Royal Aberdeen’s Course Manager, Richard Johnstone, said he had recorded just 11mm of rainfall between April and early May: “We’re experiencing extreme weather patterns. There’s no longer a balance. Instead, we’re seeing one extreme or the other – either constant pouring rain or complete drought.

“There doesn’t seem to be much consistency anymore, and that presents some big challenges.”

Paul Woodham, The R&A’s Agronomy Lead for Europe and the UK, noted that warm days combined with cold nights

have disrupted seasonal growth, resulting in stressed grass and delayed recovery from winter damage.

Clubs are encouraged to communicate openly with their members, sharing insight into current conditions and course management strategies. Transparent engagement and social media updates are key tools to foster support.

“Our advice to clubs is to engage in professional dialogue with your Course Manager, set agreed objectives and show open support for your team of greenkeepers,” said BIGGA’s CEO Jim Croxton.

“They will be much more motivated and determined to overcome these challenges with strong support from their members.”

“As course managers, it’s our responsibility to communicate and educate,” said Johnstone. “We need to use various channels like social media, blogs, and other platforms to help people understand the current conditions and our management approach.”

BIGGA And The R&A Select 10 Greenkeepers For FirstEver Championship Agronomy Experience

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) and The R&A have selected 10 ambitious and talented greenkeepers to provide tournament support during five of this year’s biggest championships.

Ten BIGGA members will join the home greenkeeping teams for the hosting of this summer’s R&A championships, including The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush and the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl. The greenkeepers will gain experience in elite championship preparation, working alongside the home greenkeeping teams and The R&A’s Championship Agronomy Team.

The volunteers will be on site at:

o The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush

o The Senior Open at Sunningdale

o The AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl

o The Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s and Royal Cinque Ports

o The Women’s Amateur Championship at Nairn

Each member is selected to participate at one of the championships, where they will be fully embedded into the home greenkeeping team. The entire group will also assemble at Royal Birkdale in April for an education session and will be invited to attend The Open at Royal Portrush, where they will learn about course preparation and the staging of a major championship.

The R&A Championship Agronomy Programme is the latest exclusive offering for members of BIGGA, building on the existing programme of exciting member initiatives, each intended to further the ability and skill of greenkeeping professionals. The successful BIGGA members selected for 2025 are:

New Captains Appointed At Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club

Three new captains have been appointed at thriving Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club.

They used a ceremonial hickory-shafted club to drive off the first tee at a special Captains’ Drive-in event which marked the launch of the new season.

The new club captain is Mark Butterworth, 55, the owner of Butterworth Cleaning Services, which cleans carpets, floors and exteriors for domestic and commercial clients all over Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire.

Mark, who lives at Kirkby Lonsdale, has played golf since his schooldays at Queen Elizabeth School. “We used to cycle up to the club, when it was based at Casterton, with our clubs on our backs during the school holidays,” he said.

“I was still a teenager when the club moved to its current site and played a round during the club’s opening day.”

Mark has been a member of the club at various times since then and, latterly, since 2018.

“I play in the Winter League and in as many competitions as I can during the summer season,” he said. “Last year I was asked to be captain of the Kirkby Lonsdale team which competed against Sedbergh in The Lune Spoon competition. We ended up winning and when I looked at the shield, I saw we had not won it for 30 years. I could not believe it!”

Mark, who has a handicap of 13, said playing at Kirkby Lonsdale was great fun. “I play with lots of friends and even if you play golf badly at Kirkby Lonsdale the walk around the course is lovely. There is so much wildlife - everything from deer to barn owls and herons. You are by the River Lune with views of the Howgills and Barbon Fell – it is beautiful.

“I like the club because it is so friendly. There is a really good atmosphere and everyone is welcoming.”

He said he was really looking forward to being club captain, describing it as a ‘lovely honour’.

Mark used to play rugby for Kirkby Lonsdale and coached youngsters aged from five to 19 there for several years. He still helps at the rugby club along with other former players, serving food on match days.

He is a committee member of the Kirkby Lonsdale Trauma Relief Fund, which provides financial support to local people and it will be his charity for his year in office.

The new lady captain is Kate Rhodes, 65, who lives at New Hutton.

Kate, who grew up at Whinfell, north of Kendal, attended Kendal High School. She runs Castle Fire Limited, a fire and security business based at Kendal, with her husband Colin.

She started playing golf around 20 years ago. “I had always fancied having a go at golf and wanted an activity that meant you were out in the fresh air,” she said.

“Kirkby Lonsdale is a very friendly club with a really good ladies’ section. The course is beautiful and it’s just a nice place where you can be around friends.

“My favourite hole is the 16th – it is really pretty, particularly in the spring when the bluebells are out.”

It is Kate’s second time as captain, having previously held the role in 2016. Her chosen charity for her year in office is the Great North Air Ambulance.

She has taken over as lady captain from Julia Taylor.

The seniors’ captain is Jack Waite, 64, a retired police officer, who still works as a contractor for the Pensions Regulator.

“It is my privilege to be seniors’ captain for a second consecutive year,” he said.

Jack, who lives at Storth, started playing golf in 1986 and was captain of the Greater Manchester Police A Division team for a year.

“During my year in office I hope we get even more people wanting to play and be involved in the seniors and build on what I consider to have been a successful year last year,” he said.

Ninety-seven members took part in the Captains’ Drive-in event.

Mark Butterworth said it was a special day because everyone watched the captains tee-off and then there was a shotgun start so people started and finished at the same time and met socially in the clubhouse afterwards.

The winner of the gents’ competition at the event was Graham Procter. Joanne Gascoigne won the ladies’ competition and David Hacking won the seniors’ competition.

People were also able to buy markers to predict where each captain’s first shot would land on the fairway. Those who were closest won a bottle of wine and the competition also raised money for local charities. The winners were: Dave Towers (captain’s drive); Ed Waller (lady captain’s drive); and Tony Watson (seniors’ captain’s drive).

Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club was established in 1906 and has been at its present site since 1991. The 18hole course measures 6,594 yards and is laid out in more than 160 acres of spectacular countryside. The layout provides two nine-hole loops out and back to the clubhouse.

A Pair Of Firsts For Woodsome

After 103 years, Woodsome Hall Golf Club has managed to achieve a couple of firsts in its history on the same day.

For the first time, the Club has a Chairperson who will lead the board of directors. Michael Musgrave was elected by the members at the recent AGM. Mike has been a member for 48 years and was club Captain in 2017.

The move follows a restructuring and a change of emphasis for the new Gentlemen’s Captain.

And the election of the Gentlemen’s Captain also provided the Club with another first-time event as Amer Latif was born in Toronto, Canada and at the age of one moved with his family to Southern California.

After studying at Colorado State University, Amer graduated in 1996 and started working for a biometric security technology firm. Around this time, he met his future wife, who eventually convinced him to move to her hometown of Huddersfield in 2002.

Amer told us: “Not knowing anyone socially was a challenge for the first year, but eventually I was able to adapt and when a couple of my new friends joined Woodsome Hall I made the decision to follow them in 2010, accelerating my golfing ‘bug’ and creating a whole new circle of close friends.”

Filey’s management teams then purchased adjoining land some years later allowing for the addition of a nine hole academy course. This is always in great condition and, like the championship course – can be played all-year-round. The Academy is ideal for beginners and those wishing to touch up on their short game.

The old clubhouse building at Filey Golf Club was replaced with a fresh modern premises in 2002. Renowned for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, the well-appointed, clubhouse is the perfect place to relax and unwind pre or post round.

Displaying how suitable a course it is as a test for all levels of golfer; club teams achieved historic successes last season with the Tigers & Foxes teams both completing trebles in prestigious Middlesex County events while the Rabbits section also enjoyed a league & cup double.

Home to tree lined fairways and tricky greens, the course benefits from new drainage works to several greens. For societies and guests a two tee start is an option if organisers are keen to get everyone back to the clubhouse as quickly as possible for a post round refreshment and meal before any prize presentation.

Bingley St Ives Golf Club was founded in 1931 originally as a nine hole layout. Extended to 18 holes in 1934, the course meanders through different settings for golf, switching between parkland, woodland and moorland surroundings.

The Bingley course was designed with instruction from legendary golf course architect, Dr Alister MacKenzie who has left many of his attributes on the course which can be see today, including tiered greens and a design that encompasses the nature of the landscape surrounding the golf course.

It is also home to HMNB Portsmouth; an operational Royal Navy base – nicknamed Pompey, a name it shares with the wider city and football team, Portsmouth FC.

This then culminated in Waterlooville being Hampshire Golf Club of the year by Your Golfer Magazine. The £240k project saw the installation of new pipework, as well as a new pumphouse featuring two pumps.

Durabunker were also instructed by the club to renovate twenty-three of the course’s bunkers. Twenty-three bunkers were then renovated with two of the larger bunkers being split into two new bunkers each - a positive feature giving definition and shape to the holes.

Waterlooville Golf Club welcomes visitors, society groups and corporate guests throughout the year, seven days a week. With a golf course that is always presented in an excellent condition and renowned hospitality and catering, a golf day at Waterlooville is both enjoyable and truly memorable.

A regular host of regional, county and national events, South Cliff was the joint hosts of the English Amateur Championships in 2016.

Formed in the early 1900s, distinguished golfers to play the course and pass judgement in its early days include legendary golf course architects, Harry Vardon, James Braid and J H Taylor and 1907 Open Champion, Arnaud Massey.

After a period of neglect and following the end of the First World War, renowned golf course designer, Dr Alastair MacKenzie was commissioned to design and supervise the reconstruction of the South Cliff golf course.

Today, the course falls in to two parts, divided by the main road from Scarborough to Filey. The seaward side of the golf course is at one with the elements and represents a true test of links golf; whilst, the holes of the land-ward side of the course are laid out at the bottom of a rolling valley stretching southwards into the hills and on the slope of the ridge to the east.

The South Cliff clubhouse was later added in 1930 and the Professional Shop in 1937.

Rotherham GC

Rotherham Golf Club, a historic golfing venue in South Yorkshire, is nestled in the serene setting of one of Yorkshire’s finest historic parklands. The friendly members club has a rich legacy dating back over a century.

Rotherham Golf Club has provided a true test of golf for more than a century with its 16-hole course. Open champions Sandy Herd and course architect James Braid were behind the design of what is regarded as one of the county’s finest courses, one which is highly praised by the internationally renowned golfing star Lee Westwood.

At 6,334 yards off the white tees the course is not particularly long, though with a par of 70, it is certainly no push-over. The course has played host to some top professionals and aspiring amateurs, providing a fair and enjoyable test to golfers of all abilities. As well as this, Rotherham is the only club in England to boast a US Masters Tournament winner as a member - Danny Willett.

Over the past few years, Rotherham Golf Club has been enhancing what was already

considered one of the finest parkland courses in the region through various projects to elevate the playing experience and establish a new standard of golfing excellence.

One major focus has been on the bunker refurbishment project, which began in 2019 following member feedback. This extensive project, led by renowned golf course architect Jonathan Gaunt, aimed to refurbish all the bunkers on the course, improve their layouts, sand quality, drainage, and consistency. The refurbishment included the use of state-of-theart rubber crumb and bunker liner technology, and the new bunkers were filled with China clay sand known for its moisture retention and distinctive grey, mottled appearance.

In addition to the bunker upgrades, the club has made other notable improvements to its infrastructure. The path around the 13th tee and halfway house has been replaced with the Blinder Eco Path system, developed from recycled rubber crumb.

This environmentally friendly, hardwearing material is easy on the legs and enhances

the visual appeal of the course. This follows a similar upgrade to the path to the first tee and practice nets last year.

Rotherham Golf club also hosts a Grade II listed Neo-Gothic clubhouse, Thrybergh Hall, offering two bars and in-house catering facilities. The recently refurbished charming clubhouse offers spacious seating and dining areas overlooking the 18th hole and practice putting areas.

It is also home for numerous social events enjoyed by members throughout the year. These range from relaxed babrecues to family fun days to gourmet dinners and black-tie events such as the Captains dinner and New Years Eve dinner. SEAHOUSES GOLF CLUB

Seahouses Golf Club has been a centre of golfing excellence in Northumberland since it was founded in 1913. Originally designed by Alnmouth greenkeeper, George Rochester, the traditional northern golf course features two of the most prestigious par three’s in the North of England.

The Seahouses’ 10th requires players to tee off across a Loch which stretches tee to green whilst the vastly unique, 15th hole features sea tee to green – a magnificent feature of an already highly regarded golf course.

In 1976, Seahouses’ original 9-hole layout was extended to the eighteen holes that can be enjoyed today and, since this time, the golf club has hosted many Northumberland Golf County events.

Today, the par 67 golf course measures 5608 yards and although on the short side in this day and age it poses a unique and memorable challenge from the championship white tees with magnificent views of the Northumbrian Coastline.

Seahouses Golf Club were awarded GolfMark accreditation at the end of 2018 – a huge achievement for a club of its size and something that members and the management team can be very proud of.

Alresford Golf Club

A gem of a course in a gem of a town…

Founded in 1890, Alresford Golf Club has developed into one of the most attractive and challenging courses in the south of England. The course was extended to its current layout in 1993.

Offering views of the South Downs National Park and the surrounding Hampshire countryside it is one of only 30 downland courses in England, the course is playable all-year-round due to its chalk characteristics and this coupled with its reputation for overall course presentation is why it has regularly been chosen to host County amateur and PGA competitions.

The picturesque and easy-walking setting on the slopes of Tichborne Down feature no less than five tricky par 3s and carefully contoured fairways which are a challenge to even the most accomplished of golfer. The 11th and 12th holes are considered to be two of the best Par 4’s in the county.

The recently refurbished clubhouse at Alresford Golf Club offers excellent bar and catering facilities and is unique in that it offers wonderful views across the course from the patio for those enjoying a post game refreshment.

To complement the amazing golf on offer, the elevated course at Launceston offers spectacular views over Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor as well as majestic views of the historic town and castle of Launceston.

Converted from a farmhouse building in the 1970s, the superb clubhouse at Launceston which has been modernised to offer a beautifully-appointed restaurant, spacious changing facilities and fully-stocked professional shop. The clubhouse’s large, comfortable bar area overlooks the course with good views of players putting out on the 18th green.

Founded in 1913, Dore & Totley Golf Club was recognised as the South Yorkshire Golf Club of the Year by Your Golfer in 2019. As testimony to the golf club’s excellent course and outstanding facilities, the Directors selected Dore & Totley Golf Club as the number one course in South Yorkshire.

Dore & Totley Golf Club is located in the Sheffield suburb of Bradway, close to the Derbyshire Peak District. The private members Club boasts a tremendous mature parkland golf course with subtle features and limited undulations - making it an excellent course for all levels of golf as well as visiting society groups.

The course was initially laid out by Alistar McKenzie and further enhanced by James Braid, both acknowledged masters of Golf Course design, their influences are still evident today.

The course saw major investment in May 2005 with five completely new holes added, and the redesign of the remaining holes to create the current yardage of 6,576 yards from the championship, white tees with a par of 72.

Today, the mature Dore & Totley Golf Club exceeds expectations with 3 par 5s and 3 par 3’s all with varying levels of difficulty. In fact, there is not two holes the same on this course, with eighteen truly unique golf holes.

The Wilmslow Golf Club

Founded in the late 1880s, The Wilmslow Golf Club is a member of the James Braid Association of golf courses. Situated just two miles from Wilmslow town centre and within 10-15 minutes of major motorway networks, the beautiful parkland course has a figure-of-eight layout embracing a meandering stream which is a feature of the opening hole and par threes.

Free-draining, the Wilmslow course is in excellent condition throughout the year. Opened in March 1903, Wilmslow is a subtle course which rewards intelligent play but possesses a stern challenge and a fair test for all.

Wilmslow is the only course in Cheshire where Ryder Cup points could be accumulated by European Tours Professional golfers. The course has hosted the Greater Manchester Open and the Martini International which heralded the arrival of some of the great German and Spanish golfers.

In the late 70s and early 80s, no less than six Ryder Cup captains of the future tried to master The Wilmslow golf course. Nine members of the European team who won the Ryder Cup in 1985, played in the Martini International at Wilmslow in 1983, In more recent times, Wilmslow has been selected as a regional qualifying course for The Open.

A wonderful blend of the old and new, modern and traditional, Wilmslow’s clubhouse occupies the site of the original Pownall Brow Farm and has been improved over the years to offer the ideal base for enjoying fine hospitality pre or post round.

CRAIGIELAW GOLF CLUB

Situated on Scotland’s Golf Coast, Craigielaw truly is a golfers’ paradise. Boasting a challenging 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Donald Steel, Craigielaw is inspired by the great links courses of Britain. It is equal to many of the finest examples of such courses, some of which are conveniently located nearby in the golf rich East Lothian area.

Despite only opening in 2001, the course has already hosted many national events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship and was a qualifying course for the 2007 British Seniors Open at Muirfield. In August 2019, it played host to the Scottish Seniors Open.

Established in 1891 and rated as one of Scotland’s finest inland golf courses, Crieff Golf Club is surrounded by beautiful countryside in the heart of Perthshire offering spectacular views from its immaculate fairways.

The superb Ferntower golf course is not just for the big hitters. Although it requires length and accuracy from the tees, it is an ideal society golf course; easywalking with wide open fairways and merciful rough.

Loudoun Gowf Club Gowfing Since 1909

The uniquely named, Loudoun Gowf Club offer some fantastic green fee rates for visitor as well as some of the most reasonablypriced membership packages in Ayrshire, the home of golf.

A ‘gowf field’ is a large arable rural space which is used as home to a gowf hole at one end, which players hit a gutty ball towards from the other end of the field – born from Scottish roots, many gowf fields have become the golf courses of today.

Similarities to these golf clubs, saw gowf clubs embrace the culture and traditions of the club and the local area. Loudoun Gowf Club is the last recognised ‘gowf club’ in the world.

The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course.

Golf on the land in Gaston dates back to as early as 1908. When in 1960, the Countess of Loudoun died; the estate was divided to form part of the Loudoun Gowf Club that can be enjoyed today. Later, in 1966 work began on the clubhouse to be formerly opened one year later, in 1967.

Today, the comfortable clubhouse surroundings are the home to tales of what might have been, as well as well stocked bars and excellent dining options.

Since 1974, most expenditure has been on the course itself with investment in the tools and fertilisers needed to keep the course in the most pristine of conditions. However, in recent years, the golf course has taken a new look with tress lining the fairways and changes to the shape of some of the holes. The greens are larger than they had previously been but still present a stern test for all levels of golfer.

One of Scotland’s hidden gems, Crichton Royal Golf Club was founded in 1884 when it was formed by staff of the Crichton Royal mental institution.

The golf club was forced to move location in 1900 and a small clubhouse was erected in 1902. However, due to expansion plans by the institution, the golf club began work on a new course at its current location.

Officially opened on Bankend Road in 1970, the club’s name was changed to ‘Crichton Golf Club’ in 1997 and a new and extended clubhouse was opened in 1999 providing first class facilities for members and visitors. Bar and function room facilities were also added at this time.

Today, the tight nine hole golf course with tree-lined fairways calls for the utmost in accuracy from the tees. The parkland course is set on the side of a hill with lots of mature trees. The elevated position of the first few holes boasts magnificent views of the surrounding Dumfriesshire countryside.

At 2,976 yards, the par 69 Crichton golf course is kept in excellent condition all year round with the greens recognised as some of the best in the area.

The undulating North Wales course plays as a Par 71 from the white tees and stretches over 6,310 yards. With a WHS course rating of 70.4 and Slope rating of 126, the venue hosted the Welsh team championships in 1995 and offers even the most accomplished of golfers a challenging trial whilst allowing them to enjoy the exhilarating sea air and magnificent scenery.

The par 72 Porthmadog golf course stretches over 6, 326 yards from the championship tees. The front nine is predominantly set on a heathland layout whilst, the course’s back nine has more of a links style to it. Each loop of nine provides stunning views of the Cardigan Bay coast and the Snowdonia mountain range.

The course has a WHS slope rating of 124 representing a fair challenge to all levels of golfer.
