A Warm Welcome ‘No sun, no moon! No morn, no noon, no dawn, no dusk, no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, no comfortable feel in any member. No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, no fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds!’ is how the 19th century poet Thomas Hood described November. He’s not far wrong, as it can be a dull, rather bleak, depressing sort of month, and we yearn for the late winter when the days start to lengthen once again, and the sun makes more of an appearance. A couple of events take place in November though that brighten up the month for me. The first is Bonfire Night, commemorating Guy Fawkes’ failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Bonfires with effigies of Guy Fawkes are lit, accompanied by dazzling firework displays. Families and communities come together, enjoying the spectacle and savouring traditional bonfire treats like toffee apples and mulled wine. Remembrance Day is the other event. On the 11th November at the 11th hour, people observe a two-minute silence to honour armed forces members have died in the line of duty. Poppies, symbolising the fallen, are worn as a mark of respect. On Remembrance Sunday, wreaths are laid at the War Memorial on Dock End here in Whitby when the town’s Mayor, members of the Armed forces and the community gather for a service. It is also November when the festive spirit begins to take hold, Christmas lights are switched on in towns and cities, and Christmas markets open their doors. Whitby is no exception – check out our What’s On pages! If you would like to advertise your business or promote a festive event in our December edition, please do get in touch - space is filling up fast! Have a great November folks!!

CANINE FROLICS & FUN AT THE MAYFIELD CARE HOME!

The past month at The Mayfield Care Home was packed with fundraisers, wonderful events, and new faces.

We kicked off the month by trading our uniforms for cozy pyjamas for a sponsored pyjama day, all in support of Alzheimer’s Society. Our funspirited team embraced the occasion and we managed to raise £125 for this meaningful cause. We hosted a delightful Macmillan Coffee Morning and welcomed our residents, their families, friends, and our team members. The Mayfield’s kitchen team treated everyone to an irresistible selection of homemade cakes, and we were able to raise a cracking £150! Many thanks to everyone involved for helping us support these causes that are very close to our heart.

Our calendar was also filled with a wide range of other activities, outings, musical concerts, and a nostalgic visit by Whitby Museum. One particular highlight was the visit from Little Rainbows Nursery, where the children’s enthusiasm, songs, dances, and conversations brought joy to all involved.

Birthdays were a frequent cause for celebration throughout the month, featuring an abundance of delicious cakes and chocolate that put smiles on everyone’s faces! Lastly, Adam, our General Manager, introduced his beautiful new English Setter to The Mayfield who, ironically, hails from the south of France. 8 |

Al has quickly become a beloved presence in our community, spreading joy among our residents, visitors, and team members.

The Mayfield Care Home in Whitby is welcoming new residents for short- and long-term stays. If you or a loved one are interested in coming to live with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our friendly team is always happy to help – please call us on 01947 280 884.

Monthly Recipe Pear and Chocolate Pudding Cake

A light and luscious cake using in-season pears.

Pears pack fibre and vitamins. These nutrients are thought to fight inflammation and promote gut and heart health. The antioxidants in dark chocolate have been reported to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of clotting and increase blood circulation, thus making this treat quite an healthy one - in moderation of course!

Timings & Servings Preparation: 20 minutes Cooking: 40 minutes

Method

Grease the sides of a 25cm loose-bottomed cake tin and line the base with baking parchment. Sprinkle in 2 tbsp caster sugar and swirl it around to coat the base and sides, then tip out any excess.

Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of hot water, remove from the heat, stir in the brandy and leave to cool.

Whisk the egg yolks with the caster sugar in a large bowl until pale and thick; then fold into the cooled chocolate along with the ground hazelnuts or almonds. In a separate bowl, with a clean whisk, beat the whites until they reach a soft peak (don't over beat). Stir a spoonful of the whites into the chocolate mix, then carefully fold in the rest of them. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin. Level it off, then arrange the pears over the mixture, cut side down. Bake for about 40 mins until the pears are soft and the cake is cooked all the way through. Leave to cool in the tin for five minutes before releasing it, then place on a rack to cool completely. Dust with icing sugar and serve with crème fraîche.

Serves 8

For those looking to avoid icing sugar one good alternative is coconut sugar and a good replacement to crème fraîche would be greek yogurt.

THE ENDURING RELEVANCE OF WAR POETS

By Brian Allen

Remembrance Sunday – November 12th Many of us studied the war poets at school. Our children may be studying them now. Have you ever asked yourself why? War poets, as a collective, have been instrumental in capturing the essence of conflict, the human costs of warfare, and the profound emotional experiences of soldiers and civilians alike. YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Trees: Heroes of nature!

Trees have graced our planet for over 370 million years, offering a range of benefits that render them indispensable to life as we know it. National Tree Week (25th November-3rd December) celebrates the many reasons why trees are the champions of the natural world and why we should all plant a tree today. Every school student learns that trees play a pivotal role in the process of carbon dioxide reduction. Through photosynthesis they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, a vital element for most organisms on Earth. A mature leafy tree can produce as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. By cleansing the air, trees essentially act as the lungs of our planet. Trees are formidable warriors in the battle against climate change. By absorbing and storing carbon dioxide, they mitigate the greenhouse effect, helping to cool our warming planet. Forests worldwide store more than 296 gigatons of carbon, acting as crucial carbon sinks. Forests, rich with trees of all kinds, are hotspots of biodiversity. They provide habitat, food, and protection to countless species, from the tallest giraffes nibbling on treetop leaves in Africa, to the smallest beetles burrowing in the bark of rainforest trees. Without trees, many of these habitats would be lost, leading to massive declines in biodiversity. Trees play an essential role in maintaining the health and integrity of our soil. Their root systems anchor the soil, preventing erosion, particularly in areas susceptible to landslides or during heavy rainfall. Furthermore, fallen leaves decompose and enrich the soil with nutrients, promoting a healthy ground ecosystem. Trees significantly influence the water cycle. They absorb rainfall and produce water vapour through transpiration, which is then released into the atmosphere. This process not only aids in cloud formation but also ensures that water is recycled back into our environment through rain, maintaining a balanced ecosystem. In urban environments, trees act as natural air conditioners. Their shade cools down streets and cities, reducing the need for air conditioning 70 |

in nearby buildings and lowering energy costs. Moreover, trees absorb and block sunlight, reducing the heat island effect common in urban areas. Recent studies have highlighted the health benefits associated with trees. Proximity to green spaces with trees, has been linked to reduced stress, lower depression rates, and increased physical activity. Furthermore, trees filter out pollutants, providing cleaner air and reducing the rates of respiratory illnesses. The multi-faceted roles trees play in sustaining life on Earth means that we should be protecting them and planting more. In a rapidly changing world they are the stewards of our world and it is our duty to recognise their value, protect them, and ensure they continue to thrive for generations to come. Happy gardening!
