A warm welcome to you all...
In December, Whitby transforms into a quiet yet festive destination that appeals to both locals and visitors seeking a peaceful winter retreat. It offers a unique blend of atmospheric charm and seasonal tranquillity, making it a captivating time to visit.
Fewer people are around, particularly midweek, allowing for reflective walks along the shore, with grey skies creating a dramatic backdrop against the rugged coastline, or up the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, where the ruins take on an almost mystical quality amidst the mist. I find the atmospheric setting of the abbey and the town’s gothic connections particularly evocative during the shorter, darker days of December. December is also a good time to explore the wonderful mix of shops and cafes along the town’s historic streets such as Sandgate and the cobbled Church Street, all decorated with festive lights that enhance the old-world charm.
Lots of Christmas celebrations take place in December: Christmas fairs, coffee mornings, carol singing and so on – a few of these events can be found on the Community Roundup pages of this issue. We mustn’t forget too the Weekend Victorian themed weekend over in Robin Hood’s Bay which is a wealth of fun-filled activities and festive entertainment past and present for all the family. Do take time out from the endless

Christmas shopping, end-of-term activities, Christmas parties at work and those all-important chores we need to do at home and for our jobs before Christmas arrives and go along and support these community events if you can. If you would like to advertise your business or event in our January edition, please do get in touch as space is limited. And finally, a very happy Christmas to all our advertisers, readers and everyone involved in the production, distribution and delivery of the Whitby Advertiser - have a good one!

Recognising when a loved one may need extra support this festive season

The Mayfield Care Home’s
Natalie Gill shares signs your loved one may need more help - and how to discuss it sensitively this festive season.
As families spend more time with older relatives over winter, subtle signs such as forgetfulness or reduced mobility can become more noticeable. Recognising when extra support is neededand how to approach the topic kindly-can feel difficult.
To help, Natalie Gill, Home Manager at The Mayfield Care Home in Whitby, offers advice on what to look for and how to start the conversation.
Cognitive and mobility decline
“Two key indicators are noticeable changes in memory, thinking, or mobility,” says Natalie. “Look out for slower or unsteady movement, or difficulty with personal care. From a cognitive point of view, forgetting familiar names, plans, or becoming confused in conversation could suggest early cognitive decline, such as dementia. Professional care can help them stay safe and comfortable.”
Isolation and worsening health
“Loneliness is common in older adults, especially if mobility is limited or social contact is rare,” explains Natalie. “If they mention feeling lonely, it could indicate isolation throughout the year.
A more social environment-like a care home or local community group-may improve wellbeing. If you also notice a decline in their general health or chronic conditions, it could mean they need extra help with medication, meals, or appointments.”
Carers feeling overwhelmed
Caring for a loved one without support can be exhausting. “If you or another family member are feeling drained, it may be time to consider professional help,” says Natalie. “Carers can work alongside you so you remain involved while easing the strain. Look out for signs of burnoutsuch as withdrawal, worry, or exhaustionand seek support early. It can make a real difference for everyone.”

Talking About Care with Sensitivity
“Health and independence are deeply personal topics, especially for older generations,” says Natalie. “You might worry about upsetting your loved one or not knowing what to say-and that’s OK. These conversations aren’t easy, but they’re important.”
“Choose a calm moment, perhaps over tea and cake. Speak gently, listen closely, and explain the changes you’ve noticed. Offer options so they feel included in the decision-making. You don’t need to resolve everything in one chatthese talks can unfold gradually.”
“As a next step, request a Care Needs Assessment through your local authority, or speak with private care homes for guidance. This helps determine the right level of support, ensuring your loved one remains comfortable, safe, and cared for in the best possible environment.”

by Dylan Parry , BSc Hons Clinical Herbalist
Sweet Cecily’s, BeeVital and Whitby Tea Company products are all made at Nature’s Laboratory, based here in Whitby. www.natureslaboratory.co.uk
But The Dispensary is more than a shop — it’s a thriving hub for community connection. Throughout the year, we host a variety of events and groups both at our Whitby venue and the BeeArc Hives of Activity at the Reading Room in Goathland. Join our Hive Nights — free, themed social gatherings on the last Wednesday of every month, take part in our Book Group, and join Whitby Compassionate Food, our local volunteer group in aid of Compassion in World Farming, a charity that campaigns tirelessly against cruel factory farming.
Recent highlights include sound meditation, drumming circles, movement therapy workshops, an evening with Lama Lhakpa Yeshe, a Tibetan Buddhist monk and at the time of going to press, we are looking forward to a Cacao Tasting and Nutrition Talk, as part of Whitby Chocolate Festival and as part of Whitby Lit Fest Fringe events, a Honey Tasting evening paired with bee-themed poetry and prose.
At The Dispensary, health isn’t just about the body — it’s about community, creativity, and care for all living things.
We wish all our members, present and future, a compassionate and healthy festive season, and look out for our focus on Veganuary in the New Year!

Often thought about at Christmas, as this sacred resin was said to be gifted by the three kings to baby Jesus to honour his birth. Frankincense has numerous medicinal benefits, but its benefits for the skin shine through, as it helps to protect and soothe the skin, reducing aggravation and inflammation. It may also help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes, as it helps to tighten and tone the skin. Internally, it is powerfully anti-inflammatory helping to reducing inflammation in the joints and gastrointestinal system, as well as in the rest of the body. A beautiful herb to think about this December – it also features in our Sweet Cecily’s Sea Buckthorn and Frankincense Night Cream.

Danby: Three Views of a History
by Alastair Laurence.
Danby: Three Views of a History, a fascinating local history book by Dr Alastair
Laurence providing a wellresearched record of three ‘views’ of the parish and township of Danby has just been reprinted.
It covers Danby Castle and its occupiers, the various clergymen who have served the parish of Danby over the centuries, and Ainthorpe, a hamlet within the parish of Danby. A chapter is dedicated to each topic, and Dr Laurence gives a scholarly insight and detailed analysis in an easy-to-read style, often including photographs, images of paintings and detailed drawings. There are two fascinating full-page photos showing Danby Castle when new in the 14th century, and the partially ruinous castle of today. Readers will also find two interesting appendixes detailing farm

sales in Danby in 1656, and an inventory of goods & chattels of Rev John Scarth dated 28 June 1720. On the front cover of the book is a beautiful watercolour by John Freeman (2014) of a farmer herding his sheep over Shackleton Bridge, Danby. Dr Laurence’s second book on Danby, Danby: Four More Views of a History, first published in 2021 is still available.
Alastair has been writing about local history for over 40 years, concentrating on the Whitby district since 2008. He is also a regular contributor to the magazine Esk Valley News. When not writing books, Alastair plays piano in the Whitby Jazz Collective and can be found working at his family's old established firm John Broadwood and Sons, the piano & music shop at the bottom of John Street, where you can buy copies of both his books on Danby as well as his previous books on local history including The Beggar’s Bridge and The Penny Hedge: Whitby’s Rustic Curiosity.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
