A warm welcome to you all...

In my opinion, one of the best places to visit in town is Whitby Museum nestled in Pannett Park. It offers a captivating journey into the rich history and heritage of Whitby and is a treasure trove of fascinating artefacts, engaging exhibitions, and immersive displays that bring the past to life for visitors of all ages.

Visitors can explore a diverse collection that spans thousands of years, from prehistoric times through to the modern era. The museum’s extensive archaeological finds include ancient tools, fossils, and local Roman relics, providing a unique window into the town’s early inhabitants. One of the highlights is the collection of Whitby jet, the rare and beautiful fossilised wood found locally and crafted into exquisite jewellery for centuries, showcasing the town’s historic craft traditions.

Whitby Museum also celebrates Whitby’s rich maritime heritage, with exhibits dedicated to its fishing industry, shipbuilding, and the famous whaling vessels that once sailed from its harbour. Visitors can learn about Captain Cook’s voyages and the famous whaling family the Scoresbys from the many artefacts housed in the museum. Whitby Museum is currently hosting an Eskdale School Memories exhibition. Eskdale School closed in 2024 after 71 years of operation. School staff gathered and donated an archive recording the school’s long and illustrious history to the

museum, including thousands of photographs. Whitby Museum would like every staff member, pupil and parent with memories of the school to come along to the exhibition with their stories, see if they recognise anyone in the photographs and share memories. The exhibition ends on Sunday 14 December which is when the museum closes for its winter break (re-opens Tuesday 3 February).

Speaking of December, space is filling up fast in our December edition, so if you want to advertise your seasonal promotions or events please do get in touch – our contact details are below.

Monthly Recipe Golden butternut pasta squash posh nosh!

This butternut squash pasta is as tasty as it sounds –real butternut pasta squash posh nosh! With golden squash, fragrant sage, and a touch of Parmesan, it’s hearty, comforting, and easy enough for a weeknight supper while still feeling a bit special.

Timings & Servings

Preparation: 25 mins

Cooking time: 25 mins

Serves: Makes 4 to 6 servings

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• Half a large squash or one whole small squash, peeled, deseeded, and chopped in 2cm chunks.

• Salt and pepper

• 30g unsalted butter

• 1 small shallot or half a small onion, finely diced.

• 15g fresh sage leaves, finely chopped.

• 1 tbsp lemon juice

• 450g pasta tubes

• 25g fresh grated parmesan plus extra to serve.

Method

Heat the olive oil in a large stainless-steel pan over a medium heat. Add the diced squash, season generously with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and tender, about 10–12 minutes. Add the unsalted butter and finely chopped shallot, then continue cooking, stirring frequently for about a minute, until the butter is lightly browned and smells nutty. Add the sage and stir to combine, letting the flavour infuse. Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Set aside.

Fill a medium or large saucepan with salted water and bring to the boil. Add the pasta tubes and cook until they are not quite fully cooked, still with a little bite in the centre. Drain the pasta, remembering to reserve a couple of cups of the cooking liquid.

Add the almost-cooked pasta and about half a cup of the pasta water to the pan containing the squash. Bring everything to a gentle simmer and stir constantly until the pasta finishes cooking, adding more water as required to keep the sauce loose and silky. When the pasta is cooked, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the Parmesan until creamy. Serve immediately, topping with extra Parmesan at the table for anyone who wants a little more richness.

Give your Immune System a Boost with Propolis this Autumn & Winter

Propolis — sometimes called “bee glue” — is an ancient natural remedy, and today BeeVital continues to pioneer its use in modern health products. As a substance made by honeybees from plant and tree resins (mixed with wax and enzymes), propolis plays a vital role in protecting the hive against infections. BeeVital harnesses this complexity to support human health - including immune resilience. What makes propolis immune-supportive?

One of the standout features of propolis is its rich content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which act as natural antioxidants that can neutralize harmful free radicals, reduce oxidative stress and support the immune system.

SPOTLIGHT ON..

BeeVItal Propolis

Syrup with Elderberry & Honey

The soothing all-in-one elixir

This delicious, alcohol-free syrup combines propolis with elderberry, honey and herbal extracts (liquorice, thyme, ginger & peppermint) to support your body’s natural defences.

• Elderberry supports respiratory health and is rich in antioxidants. See opposite for our Clinical Herbalist’s spotlight on this potent herb.

• Propolis adds its antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory & immune support benefits.

• Honey, is known for its soothing properties

• Liquorice, Thyme & Ginger soothe sore throats, reduce inflammation & provide immune support.

• Peppermint – helps clear congestion

• Perfect for those who prefer a tasty, easy-to-take tonic.

Propolis offers a compelling complement to lifestyle measures (sleep, nutrition, stress management). Its combination of antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and immune supportive properties positions it as a “multi-tool” in immune maintenance — not a silver bullet, but a supportive ally in seasonal defence. Propolis doesn’t act like a single-target drug, it works more holistically — acting in synergy across multiple pathways rather than “forcing” one response.

BeeVital’s natural immune support range includes: Propolis & Elderberry syrup, Propolis Capsules & Tablets, Propolis Tincture, and Propolis Water Soluble Liquid.

Herb of the Month

by Dylan Parry, BSc Hons Clinical Herbalist Elderberry – Sambucus nigra fructus

Elderberries grow from the elder tree, which commonly grows along our hedgerows and in our fields. Elderberries appear in late summer and early autumn, as we begin to transition into the colder months. The elder graciously gives us these wonderful berries to help us survive through the autumn as they are an immune powerhouse! Elderberries have a potent anti-viral activity, they also increase and enhance immune system activity, which can help to reduce the severity of colds and flus. They are beneficial for helping to clear out mucous and phlegm from our respiratory passages. Elderberries are also a natural form of Vitamin C, which naturally helps to boost the immune system.

Why Choose BeeVital Propolis?

• Research-backed local company— BeeVital is a leader in propolis science and production.

• High quality, refined propolis ensures you’re getting the active compounds you need.

* Remember to check reliable advice on how to prepare and enjoy elderberries safely before using them at home.

• Multi-modal immune support — propolis is known for antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.

• Formats to suit your life — whether you prefer syrup, capsules, tincture or water-soluble liquid, BeeVital has you covered.

Start your journey to stronger natural defences and let your immune system feel the difference

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Garden View Houseplants to help reduce condensation

Condensation is a familiar issue in many of our homes at this time of year. When warm, moist air meets cooler surfaces like windows and walls, it condenses into droplets, which can encourage damp and mould. While good ventilation and insulation are the best long-term fixes, those of us with green fingers can also use houseplants to help regulate humidity.

Certain houseplants naturally absorb moisture from the air through their leaves, helping to keep rooms drier and fresher. Here are some of my favourites.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

Peace lilies are one of the most effective plants for reducing humidity. Their broad leaves absorb water vapour, and they also filter airborne toxins, improving indoor air quality. They thrive in shady corners, making them ideal for bathrooms or northfacing rooms. Please note: this plant is toxic to cats and dogs.

Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)

A popular Victorian houseplant, this pretty fern loves humid conditions and will happily soak up moisture from the air. Place it in a hanging basket near a window prone to condensation. Regular misting and indirect light will keep it looking lush.

English Ivy (Hedera helix)

English ivy is great at reducing airborne mould spores as well as moisture. It’s a good choice for kitchens and bathrooms, where condensation can quickly turn into mould growth. Let it trail from a high shelf or windowsill for maximum effect. Please note: this plant is toxic to cats and dogs.

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants are hard to kill (even my teenage son can keep them alive!). They are low-maintenance, excellent at drawing in moisture, and tolerate a wide range of temperatures. They are also easy to propagate, as they throw out stems bearing baby plants called, rather adorably, spiderettes. Please note: while not highly toxic, this plant can cause mild stomach upset in cats and dogs if eaten.

Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)

Also known as the butterfly palm, this tall, graceful plant works as a natural humidifier – absorbing and releasing water vapour in a way that balances indoor humidity. It is particularly effective in living rooms and conservatories.

Tips for Success

Position moisture-loving plants where condensation is worst, such as near bathroom windows, kitchen sinks, or cold walls.

Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can add more moisture. Instead, let the plants do the work by drawing water from the air.

Combine plants with practical measures like opening trickle vents, using extractor fans, and wiping down wet windows.

While houseplants alone won’t eliminate condensation, the plants above can certainly help regulate moisture and improve air quality, while bringing greenery and life to our homes – a welcome bonus on gloomy winter days.

Pet Safety Note

Some popular houseplants, including Peace Lily, English Ivy, and Spider Plant, can be harmful to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten.

If you share your home with pets, always check a plant’s safety before bringing it indoors. Petfriendly choices from this list include the Boston Fern and Areca Palm, which are considered safe for cats and dogs.
