Whitby Advertiser March 2024

A Warm Welcome There seems to be many anniversaries taking place in March. I recently read that it's 60 years since the pirate radio station Radio Caroline began broadcasting, and also saw online that the driving test was introduced in the UK 90 years ago in March 1934. Flicking through this magazine, I see the RNLI is celebrating its 200th anniversary this month, and Whitby Lit & Phil is to hold its 200th AGM as we go to press. Celebrating anniversaries serve as valuable markers of time, reminding us to reflect on the milestones achieved, the challenges overcome, and the achievements and growth of a business or organisation They can boost morale, and foster a sense of camaraderie among supporters and the general public, often reigniting the spark which may have dulled over time.

period of time, and often think of all the team’s successes despite a number of challenges from within the print industry and from digital marketing. Not to mention the growth experienced too - doing everything myself from sales through to delivery back in 2006, to now employing staff for all backoffice functions and delivering the 18,000 copies we print. Our magazine still remains the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and district, and we have recently relaunched our website with much more content and a business directory in which we include all our advertisers at no extra cost.

If you would like to advertise your business or promote an event (or anniversary!) in our April edition, do get in touch, and remember, no artwork is no problem - advert Here at the Whitby Advertiser, we design is included in our rates. have no significant anniversaries Have a great March! coming up in comparison to the ones mentioned above - soon it will be just 18 years that we Stephen Ault have notched up. However, I am Editor immensely proud of what we have achieved in this relatively short

RNLI’s Bicentenary - 200 years of lifesaving

By Neil Williamson, Hon Curator , Whitby RNLI Museum

Sir William Hillary is credited with founding the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, later renamed the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 1854.

assisting in saving 152 lives and was awarded the RNLI’s Silver Medal for Gallantry twice.

The RNLI were involved in the greatest wartime naval disaster rescue when the hospital ship HMHS Rohilla ran aground at Saltwick in the early hours of 30th October 1914. Sailing under wartime conditions, HMHS Rohilla was enroute from Leith in Scotland to Dunkirk to evacuate wounded First World War soldiers. With 228 people on board, including the ship’s crew, medical and support staff including five nurses, the vessel ran on to Saltwick Nab and almost immediately broke into three pieces.

After witnessing the destruction of many ships from his home in the Isle of Man, and being involved in rescue attempts himself, Hillary appealed to the Navy, the government and other ‘eminent characters’ for help in forming ‘a national institution for the preservation of lives and property from shipwreck ’. With support of London MP Thomas Wilson and West India Merchants Chairman George Hibbert, the Institution was founded as a charity in a London Coffee House on 4th March1824. Over three days, six lifeboats from five lifeboat stations – Scarborough, Teesmouth, Tynemouth, National Rescues - a national service The RNLI’s lifeboat crews, lifeguards and flood Upgang and Whitby (No 1 & No 2 Lifeboats) - were rescue teams have saved more than 141,000 lives involved with the attempts to rescue those on since the charity’s foundation in 1824. Rekindling happy old memories by the harbour...

Marjory ‘Marj’ Hart is one of The Mayfield’s biggest characters. She’s 90, tough, funny and fit as a fiddle. She loves Whitby, and drinking tea. She is also living with dementia and most of the time she doesn’t know where she is or what she’s supposed to be doing. Sit with her on a bench with some fish and chips, however, and it will make her day - as we discovered recently when we did just that.

Marj was one of the first people to move in with us when we opened last March and when we had a visit from Linda Wild, her former neighbour and the previous Mayor of Whitby, shortly after, we found out a bit more about Marj’s history. Marj had lived in Whitby for many years, having moved here with her late husband Peter when he retired from the RAF. And one of her daily activities when she lived in her own home was to go down to Mister Chips by the harbour, then sit on a bench to eat her lunch and watch the world go by.

Time for fish & chips! 8 |

We know that triggering happy memories can really improve the life of someone with dementia - and research also shows that events and facts that are most frequently retrieved and used over a lifetime - like a daily trip to the fish and A day to remember. chip shop, for example - are better recalled by those living with dementia in later life. And so it turned out when we decided to plan a jaunt for Marj. We would take her back to her harbourside bench, get her some fish and chips and furnish her with a cup of Yorkshire’s finest. Sure enough, the moment Marj got out of the taxi, her face lit up, and she knew exactly where she was. It was the same story when we took her to her old home, and when the taxi driver took her on an impromptu tour of the town. The memories came flooding back - everything from knowing where the best pubs were to watching the Red Arrows on high days and holidays.

“This was one of the best days of my life”, Marj said as she arrived back at The Mayfield with tears of joy. She might have forgotten about it soon after she returned but the pictures we took will trigger the memories and make her happy again. And that’s what we’re all about - making memories, and creating new ones.

An eggciting history of Easter’s delectable delights!

The association of chocolate eggs with Easter is a delightful convergence of cultural, religious, and culinary histories. Spanning centuries and continents, the story of how chocolate eggs became synonymous with Easter reveals a fascinating blend of tradition, innovation, and symbolism. The egg has long been a symbol of new life and rebirth, a sentiment shared by many cultures and religions. In ancient times, eggs were often decorated in bright colours and given as gifts during spring festivals to celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of new life. This practice was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, which is commemorated during Easter. The hard shell of the egg represented the sealed Tomb of Christ, and cracking the egg symbolised his resurrection from the dead.

In medieval Europe, the Christian observance of Lent, the forty days leading up to Easter, involved strict fasting rules. One such rule prohibited the consumption of eggs. However, chickens (who don’t understand about Lent) continued to lay eggs during this period, leading to an excess by the time Easter arrived. This surplus led to the tradition of boiling eggs to preserve them, which were then decorated and given as Easter gifts. The transition from real eggs to edible confectionery eggs began in the 17th and 18th centuries. Initially, these were not made of chocolate but of sugar or marzipan. The earliest 10 |

chocolate eggs were solid, and a luxury item, enjoyed primarily by the wealthy due to the high cost of chocolate at the time.

The Industrial Revolution brought significant advancements in chocolate production. The invention of the chocolate press in the 1820s by Conrad Van Houten helped in extracting cocoa butter from roasted cocoa beans. This process made chocolate more affordable and easier to mould into shapes, paving the way for the hollow chocolate egg.

In the 19th century, companies like J.S. Fry & Sons in Britain began mass-producing chocolate eggs. John Cadbury followed suit in 1875, perfecting the art of the hollow egg and bringing it to a wider market. The Cadbury Easter egg was a game-changer, transforming the chocolate egg from a luxury to a popular treat accessible to the general public. The history of chocolate eggs at Easter is a rich tapestry that weaves together religious tradition, culinary innovation, and cultural celebration. From ancient symbolisms of new life and rebirth to the modern-day delights of Easter egg hunts and chocolate treats, the chocolate egg has become an enduring and beloved symbol of Easter celebrations around the world, enjoyed by all ages.

Butter four 9 x 5cm ramekins.

Place the butter, chocolate and a generous pinch of salt into a heatproof bowl. Set over a small pan of barely-simmering water and stir until melted, then remove from the heat and leave to cool a little.

Place the sugar and eggs into a large mixing bowl and beat with an electric whisk until pale, doubled in volume and thick enough to leave a trail. Gently fold in the melted chocolate and the Guinness. Spoon the mixture into the ramekins, then chill in the fridge for 1 hr. In the meantime, place a baking tray on the top shelf of the oven and preheat to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

Place the chilled ramekins on the hot baking tray and bake for 18 mins. Remove from the oven and leave to stand for a minute. The centres will sink a little. Pop a scoop of ice cream into the hollow and serve. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

We challenged ourselves to bake your "roasted cauliflower dish from the October issue as we had friends visiting who are vegan and it was an amazing success! Thank You! Joanna Fear, Bradford

Tame your tech! How to declutter and organise your electronics

Keeping up with the latest gadgets can result in cable clutter and drawers full of unused devices. Use our simple guide to help you tidy up your tech, categorise your cables, and purge outdated gadgets.

Every home has one...a box or drawer full of random cables. Many of us are so terrified of throwing out any cable that we even transport this tangled mess with us when we move house! It’s time to accept that you’ll probably never use your old Nokia charger or the cable from a longgone printer. First consolidate. Organise your cables by type. This allows you to see how many of each you have. Keep three or four of each maximum. Neatly coil them and secure with cable ties or rubber bands. Use labelled containers for easy identification and storage – anything from takeaway containers to Zip bags will work. There will be at least two or three unidentifiable cables so apply the rule: if you don’t know what it is, discard it. Label the remaining ones for easy identification later.

Gadgets often come with boxes containing accessories and manuals. If space allows, keep these original boxes as they increase the gadget’s resale value and make life easier for the next owner. If you are tight for space, store contents in smaller labelled containers. Photograph the box and any important codes for easy reference later. Before discarding any gadget, back up any important data and wipe the device. This means 14 |

both deleting data and cleaning the gadget. Factory reset the device and remove it from associated apps. This step not only protects your privacy but also simplifies future handovers. Organise stored gadgets by category and store them in designated places, preferably with their original boxes and accessories. This organisation makes it easier to locate specific devices when needed.

Periodically search for gadgets to purge, checking under TVs, in bedside tables and kitchen cupboards. Decluttering frees up space and makes it easier to access frequently used items. Identify gadgets and accessories you no longer use and sell, donate, or dispose of them responsibly. Remember, gadgets depreciate over time, so it’s best to pass them on while they still hold some value. By following these steps, you can organise your technology, manage cables, and get rid of unnecessary gadgets. This process not only declutters your space but also ensures that your tech collection remains up-to-date and manageable. Responsible disposal of electronics is also key, as many devices can be sold, refurbished, or donated, extending their life and usefulness.

A Good Read Bitter

By Francesca Jakobi.

Bitter is Francesca Jakobi’s astonishing first novel. It is a captivating exploration of complex family dynamics, narrated with a poignant blend of humour and melancholy. The novel unfolds through the eyes of Gilda, a twice-divorced, middle-aged woman grappling with the recent marriage of her only child, Reuben. While Gilda is depicted as an overbearing Jewish mother, the portrayal is never cliched, but rather deeply nuanced, blending past and present to create a relatable and poignant character.

Jakobi’s short chapters drives the narrative forward at a compelling pace. The book's heart lies in its exploration of Gilda's troubled relationship with her son and her escalating jealousy towards his new wife. This personal drama is skilfully balanced with moments of dry humour, often through Gilda’s humorous reflections, a testament to Jakobi's ability to weave lightness into the fabric of a fundamentally sombre story.

backstory, as a displaced and isolated German girl attending an English boarding school during the 1930s.

While Bitter flirts with the conventions of a psychological thriller, with Gilda's nearobsessive behaviour towards her daughter-inlaw, creating moments of intense suspense, at its core is a story of love, kindness, and lasting friendship. Jakobi unsettles us at the same time as making us laugh out loud at Gilda’s exploits, but her real skill is in making us somehow love this out-of-control Jewish mother and in doing so, encouraging against our better judgment to side with Gilda!

The novel’s title, ‘Bitter,’ is a play on the German A thoroughly engaging read. word for ‘please.’ The novel delves into Gilda's

Whitby’s walled garden enhances wellbeing through nature

Volunteers have learnt to build a dead hedge to promote wildlife. We now have 12 bird boxes across the site and are adding to bat boxes in the coming weeks, all build by our volunteers.

• The produce garden is being prepared for Spring planting with plans for a variety of fruit and vegetables, developing the herb garden and building new compost bins.

The Walled Garden is a long-term well-being project, run by Whitby Area Development Trust, and an opportunity for volunteers to meet regularly outdoors to learn gardening and conservation skills in partnership with both Whitby Naturalists’ Society and U3A Gardening Group. Volunteers from the Whitby Walled Garden have been working hard all winter with planning and preparation for 2024. After celebrating their award - winning entries in the 2023 Photographic Competition, run by Two Ridings Community Foundation and Clare Granger, High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, the volunteers have £1,400 to spend on resources and equipment.

This long - term project hopes to help people achieve a connection with nature to improve physical, emotional and social health. Garden Co-ordinator, Effie Burns said:

Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises.

A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium.
