To get to Anguilla via boat ride, you can: • take the public Ferry Service from the Marigot Ferry Terminal in St. Martin (see Ferry Service schedule on the right) • Or, schedule a charter, see GB Ferries ( page 2), for a swift transport from the Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) to the Blowing Point

Ferry Terminal (AXA).

If arriving via private yacht, having the necessary clearance is important. Docking is at the Road Bay and Blowing Point ports.

Requirements • A valid passport – valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of entry.

• Check VISA requirements before travelling.

• Accommodation must be booked prior to arrival.

• Upon departure, persons 12+ years are required to pay an embarkation tax of US$20 and children 5-12 pay US$10.

• Also, a port security fee of US$3 when departing from the seaport.

Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport, Anguilla’s only airport, services commercial and private airplanes.

Anguilla can be accessed from regional gateways such as Antigua, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico and most commonly, Sint Maarten/Saint Martin (a seven minute private charter flight to Anguilla).

From these airports, a private charter can fly directly to the

airport in Anguilla.

Local airline operators offer scenic flights around Anguilla and to neighbouring islands.

The Anguilla Air and Seaports Authority (AASPA) is directly in charge of the operations of all ports of entry in Anguilla. You can contact them at 497-3510.

• Be mindful of the right of way.

• Ensure that you have a valid temporary driver’s license (purchasable from the Inland Revenue Department).

• Do not be afraid to ask for directions.

• Watch out for pedestrians.

• Wave, or as we say, “hail”, as you pass someone.

Quick Tips & Titbits • There are 6 roundabouts in Anguilla. The inner lane is for right turns only. To go straight or turn left, the outer lane is to be used.

• 6 gas stations: Long Path(1), The Valley(2), Blowing Point(1), South Hill(1) & West End(1).

• Zebra (Pedestrian) Crossing: motorists must give way to pedestrians at the zebra crossing.

Also, be on the look out for animals crossing.

• Backstreet South Hill (overlooking Sandy Ground) is a one-way road heading East.

• There's a beach around every corner, almost.

• There's no public transportation. You will either have to rent a car (see below), catch a taxi, bike or walk to where you need to go.

Other Titbits: • Don’t be surprised that you receive your change in XCD. • No swimwear, bare backs or bare feet in stores and other business establishments.

The Anguilla Summer Festival, a Caribbean emancipation celebration, has been a part of the island’s festivities for over 40 years now.

The festival was tremendously influenced by the local traditional August Monday bazaars and other celebrations that were mainly organised by the churches.

To this day, one can still recognise some of the features of African cultural traditions and the great value placed on community spirit.

Anguilla Boat Race Season

2017 Champion of Champions - Blue Bird

More than a sport, boat racing in Anguilla is the preservation of the techniques developed by the local sailors and shipwrights in times past and a celebration of their resilience.

To observe the 50th Anguilla Day, the 8-hour round-theisland race beginning and ending in Sandy Ground began with the sounding of the horn by renowned captain and Anguilla's past Chief Minister, Sir Emile Gumbs.

Real Deal and Blue Bird 'Hard Lee'

A 'Hard Lee' is when two boats, on a collision course, avert collision by 'tacking' at the last minute. Boats that collide are disqualified.

This manoeuvre is illegal in other forms of boat racing but, in addition to how the boats are built, it makes Anguilla's boat racing unique.

An action-filled event, this poker run features local and regional speed boats. The checkpoints are beaches in Anguilla as well as cays.

A weekend of reggae under the full moon and stars with the legendary Bankie Banx and regional and international artistes at the Dune Preserve.

A commemoration of the 1967 Revolution, the day starts with a ceremony on the JRW Park and is followed by a round-the-island boat race.

LIT FEST

This annual Whit Monday fest promotes the traditional ways of cooking, music and the preservation of culture and the spirit of jollification.

Organised around Anguilla's literary heritage, the festival is a literary and book lovers' ideal reason for a getaway to Anguilla in May.

Local Recipes SALTFISH ½ lb salt cod fish, boneless 1⁄2 cup tomatoes, chopped 1⁄3 onion, chopped 1⁄3 cup sweet pepper, chopped fresh ground black pepper (to taste) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1⁄2 scotch bonnet peppers (optional) 1⁄2 lime (optional)

Salt fish is a delicacy across the Caribbean region and, if you cook it with Ackee, you have Jamaica's national dish.

Interestingly enough, it is not sourced in the Caribbean. Instead, it is typically imported from as far as Canada.

Break fish in pieces and place in saucepan with water.

Boil for 10-15 minutes then drain.

Taste fish at this point to check salt content. (If at this point it is still too salty repeat step 1) Shred fish with your fingers.

Heat oil in a skillet and add onion. Stir in the fish, sweet peppers and hot pepper. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes.

Add the tomato, mix well and cook until tomatoes are just soft.

Add freshly ground black pepper. Squeeze half lime over mixture.

*Serve with Johnny Cakes or other hearty bread and sliced avocado.

JOHNNY CAKES 4 Cups Flour ¼ Cup Cornmeal 2 Tablespoons Baking Powder 1 Tablespoon Salt ¼ Cup Sugar ¼ Cup Vegetable Oil 1 ½ Cups Water

Sift together flour, cornmeal and baking powder. Mix together with salt and sugar.

2. Make a well in the flour mixture and add vegetable oil then slowly add water.

3. Mix carefully until mixture is not sticky.

4. Knead into a ball until smooth.

5. Cover and let sit for 15 minutes.

6. Roll dough into a long strip and cut into small pieces.

7. Knead each piece into a small ball.

8. On a floured surface, flatten each ball with a rolling pin or your finger tips and palms.

9. Add about 1/3 frying oil into a frying pan or enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan.

10. When oil is hot, add flattened cakes.

11. Fry on one side for 2-3 minutes, turn and continue with other side until both sides are golden brown

FUN FACT Minus the baking powder, these ingredients make up the recipe for making dumplings for soup!

Without any major inland bodies of water, Anguilla's wetlands comprise 20+ salt, fresh and brackish ponds that are surrounded by resilient mangroves. These ponds have been a source of economic growth during the days of salt production but now mostly act as a natural habitat for a variety of resident and

migratory birds.

Flora and fauna are symbolic in Anguilla's culture; from the bright yellow wild lilies that sprout up after heavy showers (a sign of hope) to the rooster which signals when it is time to wake up (nature's morning alarm clock).

Anguilla (ang•gwil•uh) It is believed that during Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the Caribbean, he stumbled upon the island in 1493 and named it for its shape which resembled that of an eel (Anguilla is Italian for eel).

Names of Anguilla The most northerly island in the Caribbean goes by many names. Some because of its shape with historical significance, some as a result its natural composition and nature's phenomenons and others as abbreviated identifiers.

The pattern of the number of excursionists exceeding the number of tourists remained constant in 2016. However, from the previous year, there was an increase in tourists of over 6,000 and a decline in excursionists.

According to the trends of visitor arrivals, the 1st Quarter of 2017 has been the most popular time of year for visitors to come to Anguilla in order to avoid winter and to celebrate Christmas as well as New Years. Doing Business in Anguilla

International Time Anguilla is four hours (-4) behind Greenwich Mean Time, and is one hour ahead of US Eastern Standard Time (EST) and does not observe daylight saving time.

To facilitate cash withdrawals, there are 8 ATMs (one at each bank building) and at Island Gases in Long Path, Tomac Plaza in Water Swamp, Romcan Supermarket in South Hill and near The Galleria in West End.

Business Hours Business hours are from 8am to 4pm for the public sector and 8/9am to 5pm in the private sector during weekdays.

Financial Services Anguilla's business environment is within a low-tax jurisdiction and its integrity is supported by committed professionals with the aim to provide "a level of service which is second to none in the international financial services industry".

Commercial banks are open to the public from 8am to 2pm Monday to Thursday, and 8am to 4pm on Fridays.

Postal Services The only post office is located in the capital, The Valley. Besides the basic postal services, they also offer: an Express Mail Service (EMS), Private Bag Delivery, Home Shopping, Money Transfer, Money Gram and Internet access. In addition to the General Post Office service, postal services are facilitated through private couriers such as FedEx and DHL. Customs Brokers The most efficient way to clear goods imported into Anguilla is to appoint a Customs Broker, who will assist with the preparation of the necessary documentation.

Commercial Banks Anguilla has three commercial banks located in The Valley and one branch located in West End. Banking services such as night deposit services, chequing and savings accounts and foreign exchange services are available.

Anguilla's financial services sector is autonomously regulated by the Anguilla Financial Services Commission (FSC) in areas such as Offshore Banking, Funds, Trusts, Companies and Insurance.

The Anguilla Commercial Registry developed the ACORN system, which provides for online registration and management of companies 24hrs a day every day. This system has given Anguilla the ability to reduce many of the costs associated with international finance.

Business Licences In order to legally operate a business, persons must apply to the Ministry of Finance for a business licence. After approval, a business certificate is issued and must be visibly displayed in the place of business. All licences are valid until December 31st of the year received.

Fire Safety • When you hear a fire alarm, drop everything and get out.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1 to November 30, sharply peaking from late August through September.

Indisputably, during this time, the sea is incredibly smooth, the water is warm and visitors are keen to bask in the sun and revel in the Anguilla Summer Festival.

How Strong? Anguilla Strong!

On September 6th, 2017, Anguilla was hit by a "Category 5++ Hurricane" - as most Anguillians now refer to Hurricane Irma - which brought gusts of over 200 mph.

The damage to the island was extensive and like nothing Anguillians have ever seen before. Worst than Lenny, Lewis and the fabled Hurricane Donna which hit the island over 50 years ago. We now live to tell the tale of Irma.

The Recovery In a matter of weeks, businesses were reopening. In 100 days, we had 100% electrical coverage. A testament to the island's resilience.

The recovery would not have been possible without the strong sense of duty shown through locals and the international community who pitched in, donated and did whatever they could to help.
