Getting Here | Sea To get to Anguilla via boat ride, you can: • Take the public ferry service from the Marigot ferry terminal in St. Martin • Schedule a charter, with GB Ferries ( page 2) or Calypso Charters, for a swift transport from the Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) to the Blowing Point Ferry Terminal (AXA) and vice versa.

When arriving via private yacht, having the necessary clearance is important and prevents unnecessary delays. Docking is at the Road Bay and Blowing Point ports. Be sure to observe mooring requirements in order to preserve the underwater environment.

Getting Here | Air Anguilla's sole airport, Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (CJLIA), services commercial and private airplanes.

Direct commercial fl ights to Anguilla take off from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and now, Miami, Florida. There are also private charters from regional gateways such as Antigua, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and most commonly, Sint Maarten/Saint Martin.

Local airline operators offer scenic fl ights around Anguilla and to neighbouring islands.

Aurora Anguilla has a "Fly Direct" offer for its guests who want to "fly directly into paradise" on Aurora Anguilla's private planes (see pg. 37).

The Anguilla Air and Sea Port Authority (AASPA) is directly in charge of the operations of all ports of entry in Anguilla. You can contact them at 497-3510.

The world's shortest international flight is the 10-minute, 12-mile flight between Princess Juliana International Airport (St. Maarten SXM) and Anguilla's Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (Anguilla - AXA).

Getting Around Anguilla does not have public transportation so, you can opt to: Drive a Rental Obtain a temporary driver's permit from the Inland Revenue Department (see pg. 60) or a car rental agency (see pg. 11).

Remember, as a British Overseas Territory, we drive on the left and so must you.

Hire a Taxi Visit the taxi dispatchers stationed at the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport or Blowing Point Ferry Terminal to get a taxi.

Or, ask the concierge at your accommodation for assistance booking one. Or, contact Jerry's Luxury Services (see pg. 11).

Walk | Cycle | Scooter Whether to get from one point or the other, to explore or to exercise, walking and cycling are great ways to really feel at one with your surroundings. Go on a Quest to view the island in all its splendour. Immersive local tours and experiences are readily available (see pg. 49).

Meads Bay Pond 18.183497N, 63.128178W Board walk and bird watching at Meads Bay Pond. There's also a well on this site.

Katouche Bay 18.212885N, 63.075249W Go here in the late afternoon to witness the bright glow of the yellow cliffs at sunset. This bay is also the location for the end of the Katouche Hike and Cave Tour (see pg. 47).

Long Pond 18.210632N, 63.015604W This pond holds the remnants of a once functional shrimp farm.

East End 18.236194N, 62.996748W A visit to the Heritage Collection Museum will enrichen your knowledge of the intriguing history of Anguilla.

Tomato, eggplant, lettuce, cabbage, pepper, corn, pigeon pea, spinach, kale and a seasonal favourite, mango, form the list of popular local produce in Anguilla. Anguilla's farmers also supply eggs, chicken and beef, for example. Where can you buy these farm-fresh foods? At supermarkets and from roadside vendors.

Top off your foodie adventure by: cheffi n' it up using Anguilla's farm-fresh foods, or having your farm to plate experience at one or more of Anguilla's restaurants or have a private chef cook for you at your accommodation.

In Anguilla, eggplant is also referred to as "booloonjee" and arable land is referred to as a "bottom", for example, "Valley Bottom", "Cauls Bottom" and "Gaulin Bottom".

BREAKFAST

Corn Porridge Ingredients 1 cup corn (Anguilla corn, guinea corn ground and sifted or cornmeal) 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup milk 1 teaspoon butter 1 teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg or both Pinch salt (optional) 4 cups water

1. Bring water to a boil. Add cinnamon/nutmeg, salt and butter.

2. Stirring rapidly, add corn a little at a time.

3. Lower heat and cook for 15 minutes, stirring regularly with a wooden spoon. Cornmeal will require less time to cook.

4. Add milk and sugar and continue to stir regularly to avoid sticking to the pot or burning.

5. When the porridge is at the desired consistency, pour into cereal bowls and let cool. Serve warm.

Directions 1. Place water and salt in a small pot along with cinnamon stick and bay leaf and bring to a boil.

2. Add cinnamon powder sugar and stir.

3. Add grated nutmeg and slowly pour 3/4 cups of cream of wheat, whisking continuously to ensure there are no lumps.

4. Turn fire down low. Allow to cook for 5 minutes add bay leaf and mildly stir.

5. Pour into a bowl to cool. Serve.

Moist Banana Bread PASTRY

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan or spray with baking spray.

2. In a large bowl, mash the bananas, add the melted butter, the sugar, egg and vanilla. Stir well with a large wooden spoon.

Ingredients 4 slightly overripe bananas (mashed) 1/3 cup melted butter 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1 egg (beaten) 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Pinch of salt 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour OPTIONAL - 1 cup chopped walnuts/ almonds/chocolate chips plus extra for topping if desired.

3. Sprinkle the baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt over the banana mixture. Stir to combine.

4. Add flour and walnuts or chocolate chips (if desired) and stir just until no streaks of flour remain. DO NOT OVER MIX. 5. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

6. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until a knife inserted in the centre of the loaf comes out clean.

7. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

8. Slice into thick slices, serve and enjoy.

This recipe also makes 3 mini banana breads or 18 banana muffins.

Building in Anguilla Anguilla has several experienced and resourceful real estate agents and contractors to assist you in building the property of your dreams. Here are a few things you need to know before embarking on your building journey.

Alien Land Holding Licence If you are a non-belonger, an Alien Land Holding Licence must be obtained from the Government of Anguilla to purchase land or any property in Anguilla. An application for this Licence must be submitted to the Department of Lands & Surveys.

Taxes Taxes applicable when purchasing property in Anguilla include Stamp Duty and Transfer Tax. For the transfer of vacant property, stamp duty on the Licence (12.5%) and transfer fees (5%) must be paid. For a Belonger, stamp duty can

be 1% or 5%. If you own property in Anguilla, you may be liable to pay Property Tax. Planning Permission Planning permission must be obtained from the Land Development Control Committee before building or applicable developments are made.

Limitations and Stipulations For Alien Land Holders, there is a government policy that the purchase of land for residential purposes is limited to 0.5 acres and the minimum size to build is 2,000 sq. ft. living area. A 10% deposit is required until completion of the dwelling house within a given time frame. If the development is not completed within twentyfour (24) months then penalties are applied.

The Story Behind the

Stone Walls

The stone walls scattered throughout the island of Anguilla are works of art built by enslaved Africans during the 18th and 19th centuries. They bear testament to the hardiness of the rocks, creativity of our ancestors and demanding work of our forefathers. No doubt, they were used as a means to divide properties within the plantations at the Hughes Estate, Wardens Place, Mill Round, Junk’s Hole and William Richardson estates.

Today, some of them still stand. Although, the majority were destroyed during the 1970s and 1980s when development blossomed after the revolutionary years of the late 1960s.

Rocks were needed for the construction of roads and buildings and, these stone walls provided rocks quickly and in abundance. These rocks also supplied a steady cash flow for the struggling Anguillians.

An integral part of our heritage, however, is being lost through the disappearance of these walls. Left intact, devoid of bush and debris, they can be aesthetically pleasing.

Two examples of such walls are the late Miss Marjorie’s and Teacher Iris’s Dutch-style home opposite Warden’s Place (Koal Keel) and the historic WallBlake Plantation Estate in the Valley.

The Story Behind the

Hand-Built Wells For centuries, wells were an integral part of survival for communities in Anguilla. Most of these were dug and built by hand - some of which by the Amerindian people. Many of these wells are found in low-lying areas and/or near bodies of water such as ponds and the sea. Water from these wells is "brackish" - that is, slightly salty.

Water was collected, on foot, for drinking, cooking, washing and other purposes. Now, not as frequently used, these wells are landmarks - reminding us how much Anguilla's infrastructure has developed.

Wells can be found in West End, Sandy Ground, East End, Mount Fortune, The Valley, George Hill and elsewhere.

& The Old Courthouse

Visit Roger's Well in West End to read stories from those who used the well.

Sitting atop the island's highest point, Crocus Hill, is the only remaining 18th century government building, the Courthouse, on Anguilla. This historical site served as Anguilla's administrative centre - housing the Courthouse, Treasury, Post Office, Customs and Prison. Occupying the main floor were the courtroom and Post Office, for example, while the basement-like ground floor served as a kitchen and the Prison.

In 1955, Hurricane Alice destroyed the Courthouse - leaving the imposing colonial-style stairway and limestone walls of the structure behind. The current administrative centre is located in Anguilla's capital, The Valley.

The restoration project for The Old Courthouse began in 2020. The building will be used to house the National Museum and Archives.

Historically, the fi rst quarter of each year is the most popular in terms of visitor arrivals - with the tourism season running from November to April. However, with the imposed travel restrictions to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, this trend was not realised for 2021.

Starting a Business in Anguilla Any person operating a business in Anguilla is required to apply to the Commerce Unit in the Ministry of Finance, Government of Anguilla for a business licence. Once the application is approved, the business owner is required to register the business with the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and pay the required fees for the operation of the business. Upon receipt of payment, IRD issues a business licence certificate which the business owner is required to display in the place of business.
