Should hockey players shake hands more often? It couldn’t hurt.

O

n March 8, 2004, in a game between the Colorado Avalanche and the Vancouver Canucks, Todd Bertuzzi punched Steve Moore from behind and then drove his head into the ice.

I was watching TSN on the 10th anniversary of this incident, and they kept playing the clip over and over again.

It was, frankly, sickening.

A decade later, the NHL has made some progress on this front.

Hiring Brendan Shanahan as director of player discipline seems to have been a good move. To watch Shanahan, who holds the record for most career “Gordie Howe hat tricks,” dole out punishment for cheap shots in his dry, analytical manner, gives fans hope that the NHL is taking the subject seriously.

Still, hockey players have never been bigger, stronger, and faster than they are now. And their “protective” equipment has never so closely resembled weaponry.

Someday, someone is going to get killed.

Given that, it’s the NHL’s mandate to do everything they can to reduce instances of dangerous, illegal play.

I don’t think we need to shake the foundations of a great game.

In some cases, the simplest solutions are the best.

Hockey players have never been bigger, stronger and faster than they are now.

So here’s my idea: make them shake hands after every game.

At present, NHL players shake hands on two occasions; at the end of a playoff series, and after outdoor stadium games; after every other game of the season they never have to look their op-

ponents in the eye.

At the University of Lethbridge I played five seasons with the legendary Trolls Rugby Club.

Rugby is every bit as rough as hockey, but there is a key difference. After a hard fought rugby game the two teams tend to party with each other. And if there were questionable plays during the game, a round of beers makes for quick restitution.

I’m not expecting opposing teams to go out for drinks after a game, but it is my supposition that if these armoured warriors know they have to shake hands face-to-face with their adversaries at the end of the game, they will play with more honour during the game.

If my plan has a flaw it is that it puts too much faith in human nature. But I’d rather be naïve than cynical.

The biggest benefit of my plan is that is costs absolutely nothing to try.

The Art of Winning and Losing Life lessons at the Arctic Winter Games

by Tamara Neely says. “They have to learn to get along, to share, and to do everything that it takes to make that a good experience, not a bad experience.”

One of the most important lessons the youth can learn, Arcand says, is how to lose well; learning how to be a good sport through a loss is a lesson that will serve kids well.

“Everyone is a good winner, but if you can learn how to lose, it makes you a far better person,” Arcand says. “To be well-rounded, you have to be able to win or lose, because you’re not going to win every competition you go to.”

This year Team Yukon has 10 kids participating in Arctic Sport, which are derived from traditional Inuit games. The Arctic Sports include the one-foot high kick and the knuckle-hop.

With the knuckle hop, the competitor will be in a plank position, with their hands in a fist with their knuckles touching the floor, and proceed to hop in that position.

The athlete who covers the greatest distance wins.

“You’ve got to give them credit, because (the traditional sports) are extremely physical – some people call it brutal,” Arcand says. “When I grew up we played basketball and volleyball, but this is what these guys played, and it was a test of their manhood. I’m sure it was even more physical in the days gone by.”

Arcand has been involved with the Arctic Winter Games since 1992, which was the first year that Whitehorse hosted the games. He has noticed that Arctic Sports and the Dene Games always draw a large crowd.

The Yukon Team has 15 kids in Dene Games this year.

These events include the finger pull, snowsnake, stick pull, and pole push. According to Northwest Territories physical education and science teacher, Darren Wicks, who created a website to showcase the Dene Games, these games allowed the Dene people to practice their survival skills — skills such as carrying heavy fish by one finger (the finger pull), slaying a caribou with a spear (snowsnake), and carrying a canoe far distances (pole push).

Four Yukon kids are competing in dog mushing, eight in curling, eight in snowshoeing, and seven in snowboarding.

The indoor events include eight table tennis players, 20 kids in volleyball, and 27 in soccer.

In addition to sports, Yukon youth are also in Fairbanks to perform as part of the cultural exchange component of the games.

“Every contingent takes six to eight kids and they perform all over the city,” Arcand says. “They try to get the kids out in the community, performing, so the general public gets to see it for free.

“There could be just 10 people in the audience, and I’ve seen it where you couldn’t get near them because there were 200 people watching.”

By the time the Arctic Winter Games wrap up on Saturday our Yukon will have some interesting stories to tell.

pack of roughly 260 teens and tweens are in Alaska this week last to compete in the Fairbanks 2014 Arctic Winter Games. The 10-year-olds right up to the 19-year-olds, have been managing their adrenaline all week, bolstering their courage and drive to compete against youth from around the circumpolar North.

Between March 15 and 22, the Arctic Winter Games feature events in traditional First Nations and Inuit sporting competitions, and a variety of mainstream sports such as skiing, gymnastics, and volleyball. The Yukoners are up against teams from Greenland, Russia, Alaska, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

Sport Yukon president George Arcand says the opportunity to compete in the Arctic Winter Games is not only a physical challenge for our youth, but also an opportunity for life lessons. Lessons such as, being comfortable away from home, learning about myriad cultures, and communicating with people, even when they speak a different language.

“The lessons are not just on the competition field – they’re learning how to become part of the world by dealing with other people, other cultures, other languages,” Arcand says. “When you really think about it, we’re not just sending them out to go to, for example, a volleyball game.”

In the downtime from competition, they are being exposed to different situations.

“If you’re on a hockey team, there are 19 people that make up that team, and they’re going to stay together in a classroom (in Fairbanks) together,” Arcand

Why the Klondike needs World Heritage status Gray made a lot of money by allowing Ridley Scott to option Gold Diggers: Striking it Rich in the Klondike, the book she worked on while at the Berton House here, but I lament that Scott completely ignored the book.

It’s not the first time an important book about the Klondike has been given the Hollywood treatment.

Pierre Berton’s hit book Klondike was under option to be made into a television series back in 1960. It turned into a comedy of errors, which he recounts in his media study, Hollywood’s Canada: the Americanization of Our National Image (1975), and more comprehensively in My Times: Living With History, 1947-1995 (1995).

Berton met the producers in New York. Among the people connected were scriptwriter Sam Pekinpah and producer William Conrad (better known later as the

lead in the series Cannon).

What followed will sound familiar if you saw the Discovery Channel’s version of history.

“What was cooking, I discovered, was just another TV western about cowboys shooting at each other,” said Berton in My Times.

“The key character, (Joe) Bailey told me, would be a U.S. Marshall who brings law and order to the unruly denizens of Dawson.”

Berton explained that Dawson City was in Canada.

“Bailey seemed baffled. Had I checked? I reminded him that I wrote the book.”

Still, Bailey opted for a Marshall-figure, elected by the local miners to do the job.

“I told him there were 40 members of the North West Mounted Police in Dawson at the time, not to mention 202 soldiers from the Yukon Field Force, sent to prevent the Americans from grabbing the Yukon. Dawson was never a law-

less town; a typical ‘crime’ was chopping wood on the Lord’s Day.” There were no murders, no major crime, Berton continued, unless you included some of the stage performances at the various entertainment establishments. “(Bailey) seemed depressed at that, but brightened suddenly.

‘I’ve got it,’ he said. ‘We’ll move the whole story to Alaska.’”

That’s kind of what they’ve been doing since the earliest film treatments of the Klondike story, nearly 100 years ago.

Is it any wonder we’d like to get World Heritage status so we can nail down a bit of our history before someone else makes off with it?

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Charlotte Gray’s book, Gold Diggers, is great, but the mini-series that was based on her book, called Klondike, is a repeat of the Hollywood treatment that happened half a century earlier to Pierre Berton’s book, Klondike.

Poems like Flower Seeds

Whitehorse writer Joanna Lilley is launching her new book of poetry, The Fleece Era, on March 21 at The Old Fire Hall.

A

good poem can be a flower seed planted in the mind of the reader. Everything is in the poem; it just needs fertile ground to grow, inspire, make you smile, make you think.

Joanna Lilley’s seed of poetry has grown into The Fleece Era, published by Brick Books, based in Ontario. She will be reading her poetry at a book launch on March 21 in Whitehorse.

“It has been one month since the book is out, but it still feels unreal to hold it in my hands,” Lilley says. “Most of the poems were written in the last seven years.

Although some ideas were there much longer.”

The book is named after a poem she called The Fleece Era. “That poem is inspired by the first time I saw the material fleece,” Lilley says.

It became a symbol for what Lilley considers the oil age.

“At first, fleece wasn’t, as far as I know, made of recycled materials,” she says. “That came later. The poem is exploring the idea that we will all need to give up our addiction to oil and find a way to live through using resources that are renewable.”

At the moment, Lilley’s poem called “Overheard,” is her favourite in the collection. It’s about children growing up and making their own decisions.

“I’m tuned in to this one at the moment because I’ve just returned from a trip to Britain to see my parents, and it breaks my heart every time I leave them, even though I love living in Canada.”

The collection of poems has been inspired by different experiences and ideas in her life, but she says there are some themes that run through the collection.

“I’m intrigued by the experience of everyday living – those decisions we have to make each day,” Lilley says. “Everything we do has an impact on somebody or something.”

Lilley intends for her poems to reflect those impacts.

“We can’t exist without having an effect on other peoples lives,” she says.

“Everything we do has an impact on somebody or something.

That troubles me, and it also excites me.”

It’s the little things that inspire Lilley to write poems.

“Seeing green parakeets flying wild in London, for example,” she says. “I have to feel an emotional or spiritual connection, though, for a poem to take hold and work its way through me and onto the page.”

She also needs silence to write.

“I can’t have the radio on or any music,” Lilley says. “I need to let my mind turn itself on. I need to sit with my fingers on the keyboard and let ideas flow. It’s a magical process that delights me.”

Joanna Lilley will be reading from her book of poetry, The Fleece Era, at a book launch at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21, at The Old Fire Hall in Whitehorse.

ecently, there’s been more focus on our food — what is in it, and where it comes from. Living in the North, securing a steady supply of food is a topic in our food conversations.

Between March 26 and 28 this conversation continues with the lecture series, called “Yukon Food and You – Food Talks,” hosted by the Growers of Organic Food Yukon (GoOFY).

These presentations start out by discussing relationships: between our food and ourselves, and between producers and consumers. They continue with discussions on locally grown produce and how to access it. Topics include “Why Go Organic,” “Food Security,” and “Eating your Value.”

The talks begin on March 26 with three speakers from across Canada; Jon Steinman, Jodi Koberinski, and Kathleen Charpentier, who will join the Yukon conversation.

Each of these speakers has a unique point of view. Steinman is a food journalist and hosts the television and radio program “Deconstructing Dinner.”

Koberinski is the executive director of the Organic Council of

Ontario, and Charpentier is the women’s advisory vice president for the National Farmer’s Union, and an organic farmer herself.

The first two nights will be free to the public and will include snacks and a cash bar. The third night will feature a dinner and live music.

The three-evening event “Yukon Food and You – Food Talks” will take place Wednesday, March 26 through to Friday, March 28 and will be held at The Old Fire Hall, located at 1105 1st Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Thinking about Deconstructing Dinner

The food journalist Jon Steinman will be staying another day in Whitehorse to present a free talk on March 29 about the origins of the food we eat.

Steinman, who is based in Nelson, British Columbia, is presenting the talk courtesy of the Potluck Food Co-Op, who are having their annual general meeting that evening.

Steinman is the engine behind the television series and radio show called “Deconstructing Dinner.” He investigates the method of producing food we commonly buy at the grocery store, and how the relationship we have with food and farmers has changed.

All are welcome to attend the AGM and presentation by Steinman, which takes place between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The event takes place at The Old Fire Hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and soup will be served.

A Flood of Activities

Events to appreciate and celebrate water take place in Whitehorse March 18 to 25

“I know that we have many talented artists and I can’t wait to see what they have come up with,” Erin Light says.

A free screening of Edward Burtynsky’s film, Watermark, will follow the opening of the exhibit.

“This film caught our eye during the Available Light Film Festival as the imagery was beautiful and the scenes were so diverse, featuring water around the world,” Light says.

This will be coupled to the announcement of this year’s Premier’s Excellence in Water Stewardship award recipient. The award recognizes outstanding achievements, innovative practice and leadership.

On Saturday, March 22 there will be a wetlands nature walk in McIntyre Marsh, which is 3.4 km along Fish Lake Road. This walk will offer a chance to see animal tracks and birds.

The last event takes place on

Tuesday, March 25 at the Yukon College – it’s a free lecture on water treatment and remediation.

The talk is part of the college’s Brown Bag Lunch Speaker Series.

In addition to these public events, a set of Yukon Government representatives and Yukon College scientists will deliver more than 50 classroom presentations in seven Yukon communities throughout March.

“I am excited about all of these events because I am passionate about water and all of these events are unique, but if I had to narrow down the field, I am especially excited about all of the classroom presentations that we will be doing,” Light says. “The classroom presentations provide us with the opportunity to reach out to so many youth and share information about our abundant water resources. I like to think that we may be inspiring some children to choose hydrology as a career in the future.”

Last year, Yukon was a leader for Canada Water Week regarding the number and breadth of activities offered.

The organization’s website shows that there are a plethora of events taking place across the nation, all in celebration of water.

Some of these include film screenings in B.C., a leak detector challenge in Manitoba, art exhibitions in New Brunswick, a workshop for

kids in Ontario, and panel discussions on water and energy at the Universities of Alberta and Calgary.

he middle of March is important for more than just spring break — it also marks Canada Water Week. Described as the week to celebrate water across the nation, Canada Water Week is held annually in the third week of March, coinciding with the United Nations’ International World Water Day on March 22.

Heather Jirousek and Erin Light, from Yukon Government’s Water Resources Branch, are spearheading this year’s events and have pulled together six free activities with broad appeal taking place March 18 through 25.

On Friday, March 21 there will be an art exhibit and a film screening at the Yukon Beringia Centre in the evening. Rhyme and Wretchedness

by Glenda Koh sets out on a seemingly innocent date, which results in an interaction with a supernatural demon.

C is shy and unassuming, but reveals that he has sold his soul to the devil so he can sing like an angel. Because he is so shy, he can’t sing in front of anyone. As a result, he despises the world.

The monologues are written entirely in unrelenting, leathery rhyme. Playwright O’Rowe describes the format as a tool that helps the dark and violent subject matter become more palatable.

Make no mistake, the rhyme and rhythm do not lull. Rather, they draw the audience in and then push them back.

The net effect is an immediacy that carries the viewer along with a force that requires one to simply hang on and not fall off.

The play will literally be on the edge.

The entire theatre will be turned backwards, with the audience seated on the stage, facing the seats of the auditorium.

The actors will be perched one-at-atime on a narrow wedge of stage, encased by a frame of rubber bands.

Those who attend Mark O’Rowe’s Terminus can expect to be taken for a gritty, graphic, roller coaster of a ride.

The play, which debuted in 2007 in Dublin, has achieved international acclaim and will be produced at the Yukon Arts Centre

by Outside the March Theatre Company, March 26 to 29.

The story consists of three interwoven monologues by characters known only as A, B, and C. The three embark on a seemingly ordinary night in Dublin.

For those who think of Dublin as quaint and pastoral, this image will soon be shattered. What unfolds is a fantastical, supernatural, violent world of demons and angels.

Character A speaks first.

She is a former teacher who volunteers at a crisis call centre. After receiving a call from an old student, she attempts to rescue the girl. In doing so, she takes the audience on a dark journey where rough gangs perform backroom abortions using rudimentary instruments.

B is the daughter of A, a sweet girl who

Goodbye, Winter

Annual Burning Away the Winter Blues celebration takes place March 22

arch is a welcome relief for Yukoners.

We see the sun outside after work, it gets warmer — at least during the middle of the day — and we start to see the winter hermits among us emerge from hibernation. The month also marks the official start of spring, and March 22 is the date that Yukon Educational Theatre hopes Yukoners will join them in celebrating at this year’s Burning Away the Winter Blues event.

“Burning Away the Winter Blues is a festive and cathartic celebration for our community to come together and mark the beginning of spring,” says Geneviève Gagnon, Yukon Educational Theatre’s artistic director. “It is a substancefree event that welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds.”

The celebration begins at 8:30 p.m. at the S.S. Klondike. Gagnon encourages people to park at the Robert Service Campground parking lot because there will be a free shuttle from the parking lot to the S.S. Klondike from 8 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

“At 9 p.m., a procession leaves and walks the Millennium Trail along the Yukon River to the Robert Service Campground, where we will have a giant bonfire and will burn an effigy along with people’s winter blues that they have written out,” Gagnon says.

“It’s an opportunity to shed those winter blues, let go of what’s been hard during the dark months of the year, and put out intentions for the lighter days that are already well under way,” Gagnon says. “People should come to have a good time, be creative, express themselves and celebrate with friends, family, and their community.”

There are many ways for the public to get involved in the event.

The Burning Away the Winter Blues event begins with a gathering by the S.S. Klondike, then a procession is led by torch over to the Robert Service Campground to the bonfire.

“Everyone is invited to participate in the event by dressing up, bringing drums and instruments, and taking along their own burnable effigies and blues, which we will collect and throw in the fire

with the effigy,” Gagnon says.

Each year the event features a large effigy made by a local artist that is at the centre of the burn.

“The way we’ve approached the effigy is a bit different this year, thinking of ways to make the idea of an effigy more of a community project,” she says.

A local artist has built two horse effigies inspired by the eight-legged horse Sleipnir, a creature that travels to and from the Underworld in Norse mythology. These effigies will lead a stampede of horses towards the

bonfire created by members of the public on their own or as part of our workshop series, where they will interact and dance.

Yukon Educational Theatre has already hosted a couple of workshops for kids and adults to make their own horse effigies, so the event will also be an opportunity to see the community’s creativity.

More local artists have been invited to participate in the event.

“This year we are very excited to welcome special performers, including Claire Ness as our procession leader, Erica Bigland as our live webcast host, and of course poi performers, musicians and drummers.”

Gagnon is particularly excited about this year’s effigy, which will be placed in the bonfire once the procession arrives at the campground.

This year marks the 16th anniversary of Burning Away the Winter Blues. The event was originally created in 1999 to acknowledge the beginning of spring.

“Recognizing a need to throw off winter hardships and celebrate spring and renewal, the Yukon Educational Theatre went back to its roots: we created a ritual, an event with no audience, only participants,” Gagnon says. “This desire to encourage public participation and evolve new rituals still holds true for all our events and workshops.”

resh from one of its most successful festivals to date, the Yukon Film Society presents a trio of superb films in its monthly Available Light Cinema series, March 22 and 23.

Headlining the bill is the triple-Oscar winning Twelve Years A Slave, followed by award-winning documentary Cutie And The Boxer, and a new Coen Brothers feature, Inside Llewyn Davis.

Based on a nineteenth-century memoir outlining the true-life experiences of its author, Twelve Years A Slave is probably the most gripping, no-holds-barred cinematic portrayal of slavery in America yet.

Solomon Northup was a free black man who lived in Saratoga, New York in the 1840s. An accomplished violinist, he is tricked into accompanying a pair of con artists to Washington, ostensibly to perform as musical accompaniment to a traveling show. Once there, he is drugged and imprisoned.

With all proof of his identity stolen from him, he finds himself on a steamship bound for Louisiana, where he languishes under

successive slave owners for 12 years.

Played with amazing strength and power by Nigerian-born actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, Northup is eventually restored to freedom through the intervention of a Canadian abolitionist, played by Brad Pitt.

The film Cutie and the Boxer is a unique documentary from firsttime director Zachary Heinzerling, which earned him the Best Director award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

It portrays the lives of a married New York City couple that are both artists, Ushio and Noriko Shinohara.

Before emigrating to the United States from his native Japan in 1969, Ushio had already staked out a reputation as an avant-garde artist, for his highly original work.

Donning goggles and paint-saturated boxing gloves, Ushio would literally punch out his art onto canvas.

In 1972, he met and married 19-year-old art student Noriko, although he was 21 years her senior. Now in his ‘80s and forty years

into his marriage, Ushio has struggled for years with alcoholism, though he’s now sober.

Touching Moments Make the Games Unforgettable

S

ochi marks my 6th Paralympic Games, the first three as an athlete, followed by three with the Canadian Paralympic Committee. I have watched the awareness around the Paralympics grow considerably over the 15 years, and the games here in Sochi once again have brought Paralympic sport to a whole new level. All of the events are sold out and the stands are packed every day with people outside the venues desperate for tickets.

I am here as part of the Canadian media consortium which has been absolutely ground breaking. After the first three days of the Sochi Paralympic Games we had already surpassed the coverage shown in Canada for the entire London Paralympic Games in 2012. My role here is blogging for Yahoo Sports, athlete interviews for CBC, and other internal media for the Canadian Paralympic Committee.

My first few days in Sochi were completely chaotic. There is so much that happens behind the scenes that you just don’t see as an athlete. It has been an interesting and humbling experience to witness the amount of people, time, work, and lack of sleep that goes into creating a seamless experience for the athletes so the only thing they need to focus on is their performance. And as far as I can tell, everything for the Paralympics has been done to the same standard as the Olympics.

The first event I saw at the games was downhill skiing. The

Chris then called up one of his former guides back in Canada and within three days, Nick Brush made it to Sochi to fill in as Chris’s guide. These Canadian athletes really put the team ahead of themselves. I was so touched, especially when BJ said that even though he was not in the race physically with his brother, he felt every moment of the race with him from the stands.

There have been so many incredible performances at these Games, but it really is the touching moments shared between the athletes, friends, family, coaches, and staff that make the Paralympic Games unforgettable.

Although I grew up with a disability, I didn’t learn about the Paralympic Games until I was a teenager. Seeing how far we have come and knowing the impact the increased awareness of the Paralympics Games will have brings tears to my eyes. Paralympians continually change perceptions on what is possible, not for people with disability, but for absolutely everyone.

ou know you’ve been away from the Yukon for too long when you get off the plane and -15°C feels cold. But I welcomed the feeling, anyway; I missed it.

There’s always so much to do when I get home: the woodpile is dwindling; I hadn’t climbed a mountain since November; the ski trails needed someone to ski them; and my dog needed to lose some weight.

With so much to do, it’s hard to sit still, but the national championships were just around the corner so I forced myself to rest up. Sadly, no mountain climbing was done.

However, there was a lot of skiing done, and the conditions were perfect, as usual. During my European voyage, I forgot what skiing on real snow felt like. The first trail I skied when I got home was the MacIntyre Ascent Trail.

The Ascent Trail is the outer-

most ski trail, crossing the Copper Haul Road and winding most of the way up Mount Mac, providing a spectacular view of Whitehorse, Grey Mountain, and even Lake Laberge. A little higher and you’d get a view of Fish Lake, too. The Descent Trail – which is the way down from the Ascent Trail – and a portion of the Copper Haul Road are shared with snowmobiles, and I was pleasantly surprised with their courtesy to skiers. The groomed ski track was left untouched making for a wicked fast downhill.

Maybe the skiers and slednecks can get along after all.

Between this past week at home and a few weeks over Christmas, I’ve done some skiing on the Whitehorse trails, but it’s not often I get to race on my home trails anymore.

The Marsh Lake, Mount Lorne, and Northwestel Loppets – those are the races I’d look forward to

all year when I was growing up. Not winning a draw prize at the Marsh Lake race was a rare occurrence.

The snack table also stood out.

After the race we would shovel our 10-yearold faces full of homemade chocolate chip cookies and stuff as many Gatorade bottles in our backpacks as possible (as a 10-year-old it wasn’t every day you came across free GaPHOTO: Colin Abbott torade).

After finishing the 7.5 km Northwestel race, I’d watch Dave Brook duke it out with one of the Waterreus brothers for the big title.

At Mount Lorne, it was the chili and hockey game afterwards that we looked forward to. Sadly I don’t get to enjoy these hot commodities much anymore, although I did get to do at least one race at home this year. On March 8 I competed in the Yukon Championships. I had my fill of cookies, chili, and Gatorade, plus I was named Yukon Champion!

Now I’m headed back east to Newfoundland, via Air North’s awesome new flight to Ottawa, in hopes of being named national champion. I’ll have a quick chance to catch up with some Ottawadwelling Yukoners before meeting the rest of the Yukon Ski Team in Corner Brook.

Playing Ultimate is Not Just a Fling in the Park

F

or the uninitiated, the game called ultimate might look like playing Frisbee – a hot sun and lazy days at the park kind of game rather than a sport of teams grappling competitively over the disc.

However, ultimate is an organized sport that thrives on competitive spirit, and intense practice.

Here’s how it works. Ultimate is played between two teams of seven. When a team completes a pass into the opposition’s end zone, one point is awarded, and the first team to reach 15 points – with a lead by two – wins the game.

If the disc is intercepted or dropped, the possession changes teams.

The ultimate teams are coed, and based on an informal drop-in.

“I first played here in 2007,” Yukon ultimate player Carrie McClelland tells me. “I was new to town and I thought it would be a great way to meet new people.”

McClelland likes that a player

must freeze in place once in possession of the disc, meaning she must pass the disc before running to another position.

“It’s a true team sport, you have to pass it,” she says. “You can’t try to be a hog or a star, because you always have to pass.”

In addition, there are no referees in ultimate, not even at the national level. Instead, the calls are left to the players. This encourages responsibility and respect.

“It’s the ultimate sport for sportsmanship,” she says.

Anyone interested in giving it a try can attend the weekly drop-in games. All you need is a friendly attitude.

Drop-in times are Sunday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesdays from noon until 1 p.m. at the Canada Games Centre.

Come with both a light shirt and a dark shirt, and introduce yourself so you can be assigned to a team.

All levels of experience are welcome, and players new to the game are always given a brief lesson by the other members.

For the more competitionminded, you can register to join a team. Contact the Yukon Ultimate Frisbee Association to fill out a form and pay a $10 membership fee for the winter or summer season. Registered players will train for tournaments, and the summertime Breeder’s Cup, which includes a barbecue, and an ultimate game between current players and veterans.

Retired Athletes Former Yukon Quest dogs grow old in their new, adopted homes

hat happens to Yukon Quest dogs after they retire?

Many live out their lives at the kennel they were raised in, enjoying the perks of retirement: running loose, puppy training and wrangling, and the lucky task of cleaning up spilled kibble, or fish and meat scraps.

Some dogs though, get to go to their own special retirement home.

Recreational mushers often end up with retired race dogs.

They can be a great addition for a small kennel, where leaders are scarce or dogs are young.

Jillian Rogers owns Spitfire Kennels, currently based out of Homer, Alaska. She lived in Whitehorse for many years and also covered the Yukon Quest as a reporter numerous times.

“Getting ex-Yukon Quest or Iditarod dogs is good for my kennel,” she says. “Those dogs add experience and work ethic to my recreational team.”

Rogers has had at least five ex-Yukon Quest dogs. Drake came to her in 2008, from the yard of Iditarod and Yukon Quest mushers

“Drake is very sensitive and it took a little while for him to trust me,” Rogers says. “Now he’s the ham of the kennel and, as with all the dogs, (he) is very good loose.

“He’s also my Casanova, as he’s always trying to get some action from the ladies, even though they’re all spayed.”

Another of Rogers’ dogs, Bully, came to her after they bonded during the 2006 Yukon Quest. Bully was “a big brown brute” from the team of Regina Wycoff.

Rogers was handling for Wycoff at the time. Bully was dropped due to injury in Dawson City, and spent the rest of the race sharing a truck cab with Rogers.

“He rode with me in the cab of the truck for the remainder of the race and I fell in love with him,” she says.

Bully went on to live with Rogers, recover from his injury, and become her steadfast lead dog in all the races they entered, ranging from 20 to 300 miles.

Bully is now 15 years old and has retired completely from running.

“Though he’s slowed down,

he’s healthy and happy in the house with me,” Rogers says. “He still flips over for belly rubs when anyone gets close to him.”

A similar friendship began when Nancy Tanner met Bertha.

Tanner works at the Beez Kneez Backpackers’ Hostel in Whitehorse, and after the resident dog passed away, she realized how much she missed having a dog around.

“I didn’t realize until he was gone how much joy having a dog around brought, not just to me, but to the guests at the hostel,” she says.

Tanner was helping out her friend Gaetan Pierrard during the Yukon Quest 300, and as they headed back to Whitehorse after the race, nine-year-old Bertha joined Tanner in the back of the crew cab.

“Within 10 minutes, Bertha had snuggled over and was laying on my lap,” she says. “I told Gaetan as we were driving that I now had a lap dog, and he just smiled and told me that the Quest 300 was her last race and he needed a retirement home for her.”

Bertha’s retirement involved

moving from a home of more dogs than humans in the Mendenhall subdivision to spending her days at the hostel in downtown Whitehorse with lots of new people coming and going all the time.

“Because she picked me as her new owner it was remarkable how quickly she adjusted,” Tanner says. “Gaetan carried her up the stairs here into the hostel. I am not sure who was more nervous, me or Bertha.”

Compared to her quieter lifestyle out of town, she has adjusted remarkably quickly, says Tanner.

“She has her small circle of humans that she loves and shows it,” Tanner says. “Bertha is offthe-charts smart, loves routine and she learns so fast. In the year I have had her she has lived with about 4,000 people from all over the world.

“About three weeks after he gave her to me, Gaetan came to visit. She knew he was here before he opened the front door and ran down the stairs to greet him. That was the second time I saw him carry her up the stairs. This time they were both smiling.”

Rogers says those two were her main duo up front for a few years.

“Now they share a dog bed and only get up to poop and eat.” recreational kennel based out of Whitehorse. Because her dogs are now getting older, she is easing out of the mushing world. But when her team was in their prime, the ex-Quest dogs she adopted were not only welcomed, but needed.

According to Young, retired Quest dog Pingo was one of these.

“She was shy, but easy to handle,” Young says. “She was sweet and smart. Pingo never caused a lick of trouble. She got along with every dog she ever met.”

Pingo’s inherent leadership abilities helped train the team, as well.

“Pingo always found the safest way across ice, the hardest-pack snowmobile trail, the way to get cont’d on page 19...

“Pingo retired just before her 13th birthday to a life of leisure on the couch. She enjoyed being a house dog.”

Pingo’s son, Sundin also found his way into Young’s yard, but unlike his mother, he prefers the company of other dogs to that of humans.

“I call him my yard ornament as he really doesn’t come in the house very often,” Young says.

“Despite his shyness, Sundin is the happiest dog in my yard. He is constantly hopping around, singing, and playing. He is completely delighted every night by dinner.”

Before he retired due to a spinal condition at 12 years old, he was a sight to behold.

“Sundin in harness was a different dog,” Young says. “He was confident and self-assured and he’d have kept pulling if I would have let him.”

Rogers sums the experience of adopting Quest retirees nicely: “It’s rewarding for me to take these dogs in and help out my competitive musher friends while giving these incredible creatures a nice place to live out their days.”
