“Always On My Side”

Sometimes you’re right beside me and always there on my side.

Sometimes if confidence wavers you will restore my self-esteem as you always believe in me.

Sometimes when you’re beside me I don’t feel left on my own. I am always in touch with you so, I never feel alone.

You are always on my side.

Jeff Salmon

Unsere Ursel

Ursula Holmok, longtime Atlinite, passed away peacefully on April 8th at the Thomson Centre in Whitehorse with Manu and her dogs by her side. She was born in Halle/Saale, Germany on May 3rd , 1924. Ursula is now where she longed to be – with her son Gerhard.

When life became too challenging in Atlin, Ursula moved to the Thomson Centre where she lived her last two years with companionship and the best care.

She is survived by her son Bernhard, daughter-in-law, Sheilagh, and beautiful granddaughter Hollis.

We remember Ursula fondly for her love of fine art and classical music; books of all sorts; Friday “Kaffeeklatsch”; laughter; a good party; her Henkell piccolos; making extraordinary tortes filled with marzipan, rum, whipped cream and only “one tablespoon of flour,” which she shared with so many; the company of young people; Montreal (her former home); all dogs; and fancy, stiletto-heeled shoes.

Our dear friend Ursula was one of the most remarkable women we’ve ever met. She was fiercely independent, intrepid, and had an enthusiasm for life that was infectious. We miss you. We all love you.

Bedrock Source of Atlin Placer Gold

Placer gold in some Atlin creeks have links to the Surprise Lake granite rocks, and by extension to similar rocks on Ruby Creek. Primary exploration targets for lode gold near Atlin have historically been quartz-carbonate-mariposite altered (called ‘Listwanite’) ultramafic and mafic bedrocks. A good example of Listwanite ultramafic rocks can be seen on the sides of the Atlin airport runway. Monarch Mountain consists of unaltered mafic rock. Altered ultramafic rock (Listwanite) have been considered the only source of Atlin placer deposits until recently. However, despite more than a century of searching, coarse gold such as found in the placer gravels has never been discovered in Atlin’s “Listwanite” ultramafic rocks.

This has prompted the belief that the ‘Listwanite’ rocks are mere erosional remnants of bedrock sources of the coarse placer gold, and that these sources have been almost entirely lost to erosion. An alternative hypothesis argues that, although gold is found with “Listwanite”, it was not the only bedrock source. Almost all of the Atlin placer streams or their headwaters are underlain granite style rocks in the Surprise Lake area, (geologists call these group of rocks “Surprise Lake Batholith). These rocks created a hot subterranean halo when formed. This hot halo caused adjacent rocks to chemically change. Streams with placer deposits distributed around Surprise Lake granite rocks host gold nuggets containing cassiterite and thorite. Both cassiterite and thorite are present in these Surprise Lake granite rocks.

Lode gold discovered along Otter Creek in 2016 was found in rocks of the Kedahda Formation. This gold could have been introduced into Kedahda Formation by the once hot halo surrounding the Surprise lake granites. Kedahda Formation rocks are extensive in the Atlin region and consist primarily silica rich rock, with lesser amounts of basaltic rocks, volcanic ash, dark shales, and dirty sandstone.

Therefore there are potentially two source types of rock for Atlin gold, 1) listwanite-altered ultramafic or mafic rocks and 2) Kedahda Formation rocks where found adjacent granitic rock, Surprise Lake type, or other. Both rock types make Atlin very prospective for gold exploration, and future discovery.

The Job

The job description is really quite simple:

1.) Love one another.

The Plan

God’s plan is clear

The counter-plan is veiled

The Bidding

Everybody fears the knights

But the pawns do the dirty work

And the financiers turn and wash their hands

The Cycle

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind

Tit for tat makes the whole world dumb

Is this what we really want?

Nothing

What happens when a child dies in a warzone?

The Dichotomy

There is day, there is night

There is up, there is down

There is right, there is wrong

These are true dichotomies

There are plenty of false ones

Decide carefully

The Questioning

The answers are easy

The questioning is tough

The Asking

We already know the answers

We need only ask the questions

The Outstanding Questions

The Brightness that Blinds

The devil does not do his darkest deeds

In the dead of night

But rather in bright broad daylight

Where we must squint to see

The Doors

The War Room

The Prayer Room

Wedecidewhichdoorweopen

One is easy, but leads to destruction

The other is hard, but leads to peace

The Day of Rest

On the seventh day we rest

Why?

To observe some tradition?

To honour our Creator?

Or simply, to rest?

God knows we need to rest.
