The 20th anniversary edition of the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival takes place June 6-8 in Haines Junction

I

t’s a special year for the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival (KMBF). The Haines Junction-based bluegrass, folk and roots festival is celebrating its 20th edition, billed as its 20th anniversary.

“It’s actually been more than 20 years since the first one,” says John Faulkner, the festival’s artistic director. “But things like the pandemic came along and stole a couple years here and there.”

Whether it’s the true anniversary or not, a Yukon bluegrass festival lasting over two

decades and 20 editions is no small feat. Faulkner, who has been part of things since the festival first began, says he and his team have always been consistent in their approach, and never changed their goals.

“We’ve been really lucky that we’ve been able to attract the top artists in bluegrass and roots music,” he says. “I like to say we punch way above our weight.”

There are a few reasons the KMBF is able to bring in big names, as Faulkner outlines.

“We shamelessly trade on the fact that the Yukon is an incredible place,” he says. “For bands from the outside, I think it’s an exotic, bucket-list place to perform.”

Faulkner says the KMBF’s reputation as a well-organized and smoothly-run festival was established in its very first year, when the festival was co-founded

by Bob Hayes and Peter Milner.

The two late founders were jointly inducted into the Canadian Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2024.

“They set the bar pretty high, and we’ve tried ever since to stay

Though Hayes and Milner have both passed, their influence still carries the festival year after year, becoming part of their legacy and a lasting mark they have left on the Yukon and Canada’s bluegrass scene.

“It’s pretty neat,” says Faulkner. “It’s fantastic that it’s gone on so long and become such a beloved part of the Yukon summer.”

It’s a simple, tried-and-true formula that’s kept people attending the festival for over two decades, and Faulkner has no plans to try and reinvent the wheel.

“It’s got a great vibe, it’s got a great location, it’s got the top musicians in bluegrass and roots playing at it,” he says. “So, what’s not to like?” cont’d on page 6 ...

A

s the author Gertrude Stein once said, “We are always the same age inside.” That means I’m still the Grade two kid who was so excited about my class’s anti-littering campaign. We all made posters on sheets of construction paper that said some variant of “Don’t be a litterbug” surrounded by evillooking insects and evil-looking trash.

Our work was hung in the glassfronted official sign case in front of the town hall. I was so proud.

And I was so sure our messages would solve the problem that my seven-year-old soul was so troubled by.

Weeks and months and years went by, and there was still litter flying around. I was disillusioned and heartbroken.

I still feel that sadness when I see drink containers, food wrappers, cigarette packs, and all kinds of unnameable bits along roadsides and walkways. But I haven’t given up, and I still make signs. Maybe you’ve seen them as you’ve driven out of town.

Every May, as soon as the roadside snow is gone and the mud has mostly dried, my husband and I clean up the sides of the road that is our route to town. We each carry two bags — one for refundables and one for trash. We park the car one kilometre down the road, then I walk back to our starting point on one shoulder, cross the road, and walk back to the car on the other side.

Meanwhile, he has done the same but walking in the direction of travel, then back. We empty our bags into bigger sacks in the car, drive two kilometres ahead, and do it all over again, and again, until we get to the highway.

Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but sometimes I think the litter situation isn’t quite as bad as it used to be. I’m thankful for others who clean up, too. But that said,

I know that today’s kids still see litter and are bummed out about it.

I love and appreciate the studentpainted trash receptacles around town. Their messages illustrate the range of emotions aroused by the problem of littering.

There’s love for the earth seen in illustrations of sun, water, and greenery, and in appeals like, “For all the foxes, fish, bears, and moose; for our land and for the future ... Don’t litter.”

There’s impatience, and maybe anger, in the message, “This trash can is not that far. Don’t be lazy.”

There’s idealism of the Dr. Seuss sort on the container that suggests we “Be like the Lorax.”

There’s humour and cleverness in the design showing a UFO and aliens saying, “Please let us abduct your trash.”

And then there’s the one that reminds me of the heartbreak I felt when I was in Grade two – “If

you liter (sic), we will go extinct.”

Alongside my age seven innocence and sadness, I also remember feeling frustrated by not being able to understand other human beings and why they do what they do ... (well, that feeling never goes away, does it?)

After all, our family car had a trash bag in it, and it got emptied at the gas station during fuel ups.

So easy. And hey! Those drink containers are worth money. Who in their right mind throws away money? And just open your eyes and look at the world around you.

See how beautiful it is. Why would you make it ugly?

I know we all have different sensitivities and tolerance for order vs. messiness. For instance, my husband doesn’t see what I see when I’m dusting furniture or mopping the floor. My friend’s kitchen strikes me as chaotic, but she knows where everything is.

My neighbour says he doesn’t see the litter along the roadway.

But we care about each other — so my husband wipes his feet before coming inside; I help my friend in her kitchen; my neighbour doesn’t throw anything out his truck windows. We all do what we can to be sensitive to each other.

So let’s all be sensitive to the wishes of children and their need for a healthy planet to grow up on. Let’s all remember that, no matter how old we are, not being a litterbug is really, really, really important. n

SANDCASTLES: TIPS, TRICKS & CREATIVE FUN There is something magical about building a sandcastle

W

hether you are five or 55, digging into warm sand and crafting your own little kingdom by the sea is one of summer’s simplest — and most joyful — pleasures. Building sandcastles is not just a fun beach activity; it is a chance to get creative, bond with friends or family, and let your imagination run wild.

But if you have ever tried to build a sandcastle and ended up with a crumbling pile of sand, you are not alone. Like any art form, there are some tricks to getting it right.

Here are some fun and useful tips to help you level up your sandcastle game and create a sandy masterpiece to be proud of!

Use this sand to build a firm mound — your castle’s foundation.

Pack it down tightly, stomping it with your feet or pressing it with your hands. A solid base is key to a sturdy castle.

Use the “Drip” Technique for

Towers One of the easiest and most fun ways to make towers is the “drip” method. Mix very wet sand

Use simple tools like plastic knives, spoons, paintbrushes, and even straws to carve and shape details into your sandcastle. Straws are great for blowing away excess sand from small crevices without touching your work. Start with basic shapes — arches, windows, and brick lines — and work your way to more intricate designs as you get comfortable.

Want to take your castle to the next level?

Add moats, drawbridges, staircases, or seashell decorations.

Collect beach treasures such as small stones, seaweed, and driftwood to give your castle character.

Right Sand Not all sand is created equal. The best sand for sandcastles is fine and slightly moist.

Dry sand will not hold together, and waterlogged sand will slump. A good rule of thumb is to mix about one part water to eight parts sand — just enough to hold its shape when you squeeze it into a ball. If it crumbles, add more water. If it oozes, add more sand!

 Build a Strong Foundation

Start by digging a hole a few feet from the waterline to access

Building castles one grain at a time in a bucket until it is a soupy consistency. Then, take handfuls and let it drip through your fingers onto your base, forming tall, drippy towers that look like something out of a fairytale. Kids love this technique because it is messy and magical!

Sandcastle building is even more fun as a group activity. Assign roles: digger, builder, decorator, sculptor.

Working as a team not only makes the project go faster, but it is also a fantastic way to bond and share laughs.

Building sandcastles is a timeless beach tradition filled with creativity, teamwork, and pure joy. With the right sand, some helpful tools, and a splash of imagination, you can create anything from a simple seaside fort to a grand sandy palace.

WASTE NOT, BURN HOT Turning scraps into sparks

I

have always thought that it is a waste of kindling to leave or burn the smallest branches in the bush when cutting firewood.

But the mess that they made all

over the floor when I brought them inside had me back to chopping kindling in no time.

Last week, I came up with a plan for all those little branches.

I wrapped them in an old What’s Up Yukon, chucked in a couple of toilet paper rolls (that I’ve been saving for something useful),

taped them into a bundle and shoved them in a beer box.

I then stomped on the bigger branches to break them and put them in other beer boxes. It took a while and I suffered a couple of scratches but it was worth it for those fire starters. I thank myself every morning when I

pop one in the wood stove with a couple of branches and logs, light one corner and walk away.

No need to blast it with a blow torch and it works the first time, every time.

My plan works best when the branches are on your own property so you can process

them at will. Nobody has the energy, patience or room to collect them after filling a truck full of firewood.

But it is a fantastic way to clean up your property … and to start your woodstove. n

Music, magic, mountains ... cont’d from page 2 Faulkner makes sure to point out that the festival doesn’t appeal only to hardcore bluegrass fanatics, and believes any music lover and anyone who wants to be part of an enjoyable community event will feel right at home amongst the festival goers.

“People sometimes forget that,” he says. “The level of musicianship is so high — it’s world-class. Any music lover is going to be dazzled, whether they’re a hardcore bluegrass fan or not. And we also present a wider variety of music than just straight up bluegrass. We always have folk and roots artists, this year being no exception.”

It’s more than just performances that take place across the festival weekend.

Faulkner says the Saturday night barn dance continues to be hugely popular year after year, as does the Sunday gospel music show.

But open stages, workshops and jam sessions are also among the events in which attendees can participate. That’s not even to mention the community and nature aspects the festival brings.

“It’s a pretty nice package,” Faulkner says.

This year’s lineup, like any year, features a mixed bag of local and travelling artists, and Faulkner says the lineup is curated in part by artists reaching out and asking to be part of the festival, and also by his own finger on the pulse of who is hot and rising in the bluegrass world.

“I attend some festivals myself, and listen to the serious bluegrass channels, those kinds of things,” he says. “I try to catch people on their way up. It’s hard to describe the process in 25 words or less.”

“You get to see all these great folks in these two small, pretty intimate venues,” says Faulkner.

“Both of them have just awesome acoustics and sound. You get the best of the best.”

Faulkner says the artists are always very happy with the northern hospitality they’re provided, as well as the welcoming nature of the audiences. He also revels in the opportunity to show off the Yukon to the travelling artists, even teaming up with Alkan Air and pilot Rick Nielsen to take the artists for sight-seeing flights over the St. Elias Mountain Range and Kluane icefields.

“People come back from that and they’re just gobsmacked,” Faulkner says. “It’s almost a religious experience to go and see that.”

It’s not just fun for the artists, though, as Faulkner says going out to see bluegrass music live is an entirely separate experience from listening to recordings of it.

“It’s almost a different sport,” he says. “You can listen to the records and the records are amazing, but to see them perform in the moment and how organic it can sometimes be, it makes the hairs stand up on the back of your head. It’s so incredible.”

The future of the KMBF is always on Faulkner’s mind, as he’s making preparations for the following year before the dust even settles on the current one.

It’s been over 20 years, and if it’s up to Faulkner, it will be far longer than another 20.

ment abounds. It’s not just education, though learning happens at every turn. It’s an invitation for children to discover that art exists to be inhabited, carried forward, and eventually created anew.

At noon, a parade will wind around the Arts Centre building, led by the Carnival Band and featuring everyone who wants to join. Children will carry creations made earlier in the day, their voices mixing with brass instruments. Stilt walkers will tower above the crowd, while aerialists will later teach children to work with hoops, turning the air itself into a space for artistic expression.

The festival operates on a Michele Emslie, model of radical accessibility — Community Programming most activities are free, with the Director for YAC two main performances requiring only a five-dollar ticket, and even those include rush tickets for families who need them. This isn’t charity. It’s a recognition that art belongs to everyone, and that community cultural life requires intentional cultivation and care.

In the endless June light, the work of growing both art and artists will continue — Remy Rodden, left, and Peter Lenton of the EnviroSongsters will perform their one voice, one heartenvironmental-themed show at the Midnight Sun Moppets Children’s Festival beat, one shared song at a time. n

are not just future citizens but present ones, capable of leadership and care when given the proper tools and encouragement.

Lenton carries with him a story that illuminates the deeper purpose beneath all this organized chaos. After a school performance in northern Alberta, a young boy approached him in the hallway, grabbed both his hands, and asked with startling directness: “Where are your songs?” When Lenton explained that they lived in his head, his guitar, and his heart, the child squeezed his hands tighter and declared, “Well, now they’re in my heart too.”

This moment — of transfer, of ownership, of music finding new homes — captures something essential about what the Moppets Festival offers. It’s not just entertainment, though entertain-

ature presses against the towering windows of the Yukon Arts Centre’s (YAC) foyer from three sides — a gentle embrace of spruce and birch that transforms the space into something between theatre and forest sanctuary Here, where audiences typically gather before performances, Michele Emslie and I sit at a quiet table, dis-cussing something that happens just once a year: the moment when this sophisticated performance venue transforms into a play-ground of possibility.

On June 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Midnight Sun Moppets Children’s Festival will once again claim these halls, bringing with it the particular magic that occurs when art meets childhood wonder.

“I just love this event so much,” says Emslie, the community programming director for the Yukon Arts Centre. Her wild pink hair bounces as we talk about the purpose and meaning of art in the community. Emslie has cultivated this festival with the understanding that children don’t just consume culture — they actively create it, given the space and invitation to do so.

The festival will spread across multiple spaces, both indoor and outdoor. Free activities beckon from every corner: a cardboard castle that rebuilds itself each year through collective imagination, tie-dye stations where white tshirts become canvases for personal expression, and a sunflower planting station that sends The Tiny Islands Brass Carnival return to the families home with the Midnight Sun Moppets Children’s Festival promise of something growing. The Unknown Chef The Unknown Chef has fed you at many local restaurants, for years, and has decided to share some recipes he has developed and others he has stolen from other chefs.

CLASSIC BACON CHEESEBURGER

Flatten the patties

Who doesn’t love a bacon cheeseburger?

They’re even better at home

S

kip the Door Dash, skip the fat-food places, even skip the restaurants who fry a burger up on the flat top grill!

Make your own BBQ burgers from scratch and they are not only more nutritious, but way more tasty!

When I was growing up, we never had homemade burgers. My Dad was the ‘BBQ King’ and did amazing things with steaks, ribs, chops, etc ... but never could get the burgers right. He even went out and bought one of those ‘fancy’ burger presses to try to form the patties better — to no avail!

He would light the barbecue, always with briquettes, make the patties, prep all of the fixings and then watch in horror as his patties dried up, broke apart, fell through the grill and burned on the briquettes. He would try to scoop up what he could salvage and put that on the buns.

I tried a few times after I left home to make burgers and always got the same result as Dad. Of course, I was basically using his recipe, so what’s that old saying, ‘The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result’.

I learned, years later, from

some incredible chefs that what we were both missing is a combination of a binder and pressure. The binder — eggs and bread crumbs — holds the patty together while it cooks and dries out. The pressure forces the little pockets of air out of the patties so they adhere properly and maintain their form, even as they dry and shrink.

I was cooking up in Dodge with ‘Big Ernie’, the head chef. What an amazing chef! When Ernie taught me his burger recipe, I knew that I had found the best ever.

It’s funny, we would do up 5 kg of burger at a time and one of the ingredients is seasoning salt. Ernie was showing me the mixture and grabbed the bucket of seasoning salt. “Add a heaping handful of salt,” he said. Then he grabbed my hand, turned it over, laughed and said, “in your case, better make that two heaping handfuls!”

I have, unashamedly, used his recipe ever since to great success and accolade, both at home and in restaurant kitchens.

Ingredients: • Ground Beef • Eggs • Bread crumbs • Worcestershire sauce • BBQ sauce • Seasoning salt • Montreal steak spice • Garlic powder

As soon as that cheese melts…

Prepare the ingredients • Bacon • Cheese • Buns • Lettuce • Tomatoes • Onions • Condiments Method: 1. Prepare your ingredients.

Slice your lettuce and onions and store in the fridge to keep crisp.

Weigh your ground beef so you know how many patties it will make.

2. Empty your ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of bread crumbs, one egg and about ¾ tablespoon of BBQ sauce for every two patties. Also about a teaspoon of worcestershire, seasoning salt, steak spice and garlic powder per patty.

3. Get your hands right in there and thoroughly mix everything up. Squish it between your fingers until it’s really mixed well. It should feel a little slimy and slightly sticky by the time that you are done.

4. Lay out some wax paper on your counter. I use a scale for this next step. Portion the beef into quarter pound balls. Lay them on the wax paper and slightly push them into an oval, leaving plenty of space between them to flatten them out. Cover them all with another piece of wax paper.

5. This is the fun part. Take the biggest, heaviest can out of the cupboard that you own. It needs to be at least 5 inches in diameter.

Use the can to flatten the patties by giving them a really good, hard whack. Yes, just smash them with the flat end. I use a 1.4 litre can of pineapple juice.

6. Heat up your BBQ and cut your bacon strips in half. Slice your cheese thinly and set aside.

You’re going to cook the bacon on the BBQ while the burgers are cooking, so set the bacon in a BBQ safe plate.

7. Spray the burgers with veggie spray and set on the BBQ. Put the plate of bacon on at the same time. When you flip the burgers, spray them again first.

8. Load up your buns. I use ketchup, green

relish and sliced onion rings on the bottom. Mayo, lettuce and tomato on the top.

9. Just as the burgers are ready, add the bacon strips and sliced cheese. Close the lid of the BBQ. As soon as the cheese is melted, remove from the heat and place the burgers on your readied buns.

You can serve just about anything as a side with these: potato chips, salad, baked beans, jalapeno poppers. Since this is a classic burger, I’m going with my classic home made chips, more on those later. Enjoy! n

S

he feels it’s important that people value the northern lifestyle and that comes from building an understanding.

The challenge of successfully delivering this education fills her spirit and nourishes her creativity.

Becoming an internet sensation was just an accident.

Sudrich calls herself a content creator. She has just under one million followers on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube combined.

Her audience profile is broad: equally male and female, 28 and older, and from around the world.

As a communications specialist, Sudrich realized she could better meet the needs of her contract clients if she understood the opportunities and challenges of posting video on social media.

Short video was emerging as a popular communications tool on Instagram. First, she had to learn how to make one-to-two-minute targeted videos.

Sudrich decided to use herself as a subject and to talk about something she knows — hunting, fishing and camping. Her content was targeted at people who didn’t grow up with this lifestyle but were intrigued and wanting to try it out, yet feeling nervous about asking questions that may be seen as foolish.

Over time, Sudrich learned to break her stories into small bites. She started to develop what she calls, “teaspoonfuls of information.” This method has promoted more understanding and less of a reactive, generally negative response.

For example, she explains, “I got up, that’s a whole video.

We saw a moose, that’s a whole video. We harvested a moose, that’s a whole video. We walked up to the harvest site, that’s another video.”

It’s about bringing her viewers along slowly, taking time to explain not only what is happening in the videos, but why. The effect has been the gentle building of an

education about life on-the-land, and with it, more acceptance.

Uninformed feedback, Sudrich has learned, can be hard to handle.

She references talking to people about fur and trapping. No surprise, this is usually a hot topic with outsiders.

Sudrich explains her motivation — “I have so many friends in Old Crow who are young men and women, who are fantastic on the land. Every time they share something about their lifestyle that they are proud of, and they absolutely should be proud of, they just get hammered online and their content gets taken down.”

Sudrich’s aim is to reduce the misconceptions and develop an understanding. “It’s impactful to their self-esteem, to be told that their lifestyle is dangerous and wrong.”

So how did all of these videos on fishing, hunting and camping in the north go viral? One evening Sudrich posted a fishing video and talked about the lure she had used to catch her fish.

The next morning, when she checked her social media accounts, she was shocked to see that she had gone from 2,000 followers to 6,000 people who had engaged with that video, overnight. This was the start of her accounts taking flight!

“That’s when I learned that men on the internet love nothing more than to correct a woman when it comes to things like

hunting and fishing. All of their comments drove the engagement rate up. It became my first viral video.”

It turns out she had called the lure a Len Thompson, which was in fact the manufacturer of the lure, not the type of lure.

Realizing the opportunity however, Sudrich jokes, “I now

fish on the internet as much as I do in the bush.”

These days her social media persona is humming along with ever-increasing popularity. Her dad Rudy is a favourite with her followers and features in many of her videos.

Czech Republic. Her followers love the authenticity of Sudrich’s story-telling, how she relates with her dad, and her life in this rugged, challenging terrain. She’s constantly reminded by outsiders of how fortunate she is to live in the Yukon.

“It helps you see your own reality through the eyes of other people and you appreciate it more,” she says.

With a baby on the way, Pavlina and her partner will need to reassess. It will be their first experience of raising a little one on the land, navigating family privacy when creating social media videos, juggling the demands of work, life, and the online interactions with nearly a million people — there’s a lot to learn and there’s only so much time in a day!

Ultimately, Sudrich’s objective of helping people feel comfortable and confident, when going into the Yukon wilderness has been met.

She just didn’t expect it would be this many people, from all walks of life, who would be responding to her call.

“If I can help people feel more comfortable getting out there, that’s rewarding,” she says. n

A reflection on friends, family and our community

A

fter posting sternwheeler pictures in my last column, I thought that I had a little ‘splainin’ to do. For those of you who don’t remember, I was “Sternwheeler Sam” during Rendezvous in 2015. It was my second time Samming after being “Dino Martini” in 2005.

Let’s roll back the history here for clarity’s sake, bear with me —

My first ever time in the Yukon was January of 1990, when I came up to play for a month at the KK with The Darcy West Band. It was a typical Yukon January — cold, dark and an absolute blast! We met so many great folks; some are still really great friends to this very day.

Towards the end of January, many of the folks that we had met started telling us that we should contact our agent and extend our

stay for another month. Something called ‘Sourdough Rendezvous Festival’?

We had no idea what they were talking about and had dates booked already, ‘down south’ immediately after our gig, so we left to go back home and back to work with no idea Fast forward 10 years and I came up to open the 202 with my band Midnight Flyer. That’s when I decided to stay. I ended up scoring a full time gig playing at the Roadhouse six nights a week.

Still no clue about Rendezvous.

Sometime in late January of 2000, Denise, Con Lattin’s manager at the Roadhouse, came up to chat. I was sitting having a coffee with Stu, the piano player from Yukon Jack, at the bar. She opened the conversation with, “So, Rendezvous is coming up soon.”

“Great,” I said, “I’m really looking forward to seeing this.”

She went on to say that “I really wanted Barnacle Bob to come down from Dodge and play honky-

tonk piano for two weeks.”

That kind of floored me. Was I going to be laid off for two weeks due to some stupid festival?

She went on, “I called him up and asked him and he told me ‘screw that!...’ I’m not coming down to town to play at your crappy little bar!’ “ Bahahaha!

Then she said, “So you are going to learn how to play honky-tonk piano in the next 2-1/2 weeks!”

Stu and I rolled around laughing, which did not impress Denise at all. In the end, under threat of terminating my contract, I spent two hours every afternoon on stage trying to learn how to play honkytonk piano.

In the nick of time, the guys from next door at the TNT came over and offered me a full-time gig playing bass with them — six nights a week for great cash. I couldn’t move my gear over fast enough!

(After proper notice, of course.)

That first Rendezvous was an absolute riot! Two weeks of non-stop partying, drinking, bar hopping, dancing, playing, singing and fun.

Fast forward another five years, the TNT had turned into the Blue Moon Saloon, with my great friends Gerry, Hilda and Bob running it. It was my living room. Rendezvous was fast approaching and I had this silly idea to be a Sourdough Sam. Gerry, Hilda and Bob thought that was a great idea and sponsored me.

The theme that year was a USO Show. United Services shows for overseas deployed servicemen and women. Dino Martini was born!

I went to see my ex-neighbour from a few years back in Mendenhall, Denise, who was a hair-dresser in that studio upstairs next to YK Net on Main, at the time.

I had been cutting wood out at the Marshall Creek burn for a while and was quite ‘shaggy’ looking.

I asked her if she could make me look like Dean Martin. She was eccont’d on page 13 ...

Talent No Talent? With the Shufflers

Sternwheeler performing at the Lip Sync in Gerties static about it and I later learned that she has had a crush on Dean since she was a little girl. She did a great job.

I walked around town for two weeks in a suit and tie and had people that I’d known for a long time come up and introduce themselves. They didn’t even recognize me, all cleaned up and properlooking.

I will say that, while I didn’t win, I placed respectably and learned a great deal. Mary from ‘Mary’s House Of Men,’ across the street from the Blue Moon, got me all dolled up for the Queen of the Creeks drag show. Bob was my escort and we all had an absolutely fantastic two weeks. As the guy who won first place that year said, “It was the only contest that I ever won with my liver!”

Fast forward another ten years …

Pam and I had just returned from our stint in Winnipeg opening a prep lab there, and I ran into our great friend Marj Eschak in the Super A in Porter Creek. “Rendezvous is coming and we need Dino back,” she told me.

After some time, and tequila, we came up with Sternwheeler, the miner on our licence plates.

Pam and I had way too many, very late night planning sessions. We searched for the music that we’d need, we searched for the costumes and props, I rehearsed the numbers.

It was great fun.

Suffice it to say that Pam and I had a fantastic time! I met some new friends who are still brothers to this day. Two-cheeks, Benji, Evan, Daniel, Harold, Stuart ... among many others.

As much as I love Marj like a sister and would do anything for her, I was not about to shave my beard and cut my hair to recreate Dino, for what had now turned into five shows over two weeks. “I will think about that,” I promised her. I went home to our little cabin in Mendenhall and mulled it over with Pam.

Our great friends Craig and Fernando were running the Sternwheeler Lounge in the Days Inn at the time and sponsored me this time. It was a great fit! Fernando did my hair in Victoria’s Secret curls for the Queen of the Creeks, and one of their friends who is a drag artist himself, taught me how

brand for me since then. He has placed in the DCMF Lip-Sync at Gerties and performed for five summers at the DBRV Lodge for American and German tourists.

When I go out in town in costume, I have tourists stopping me to ask for a picture. Sternwheeler was the bassist for our band GR8-X

out in the Junction for their Halloween dance and many times at our favourite pub, The 1016.

While I’m getting older and not quite as sexy and nimble as I used to be, the thought’s still there.

Should I do another Sam run? You never know. It’s a great way to help out the community, have a ton of fun and prepare a brand new show for neighbours and tourists alike.

That all seems like a lifetime away, though. For now I’ve got a garden to plant, some amazing content to publish for you all and a whole Yukon summer to enjoy before I start to think about cold, dark and getting through the next winter.

You might see me again next February. I’ve got some ideas. And you know what they say, “Once a Sam — Always a Sam!” n

T

hough she’s only been in the Yukon for the past four years, Bria Rose has already become a staple of the territory’s music community.

Originally hailing from Dease Lake, B.C., she hit the ground running upon arriving in Whitehorse, playing every open mic and free performance opportunity she could find to meet fellow musicians and music lovers, before eventually launching Bria Rose N’ Thorns, her indie-folk group.

“I just love the Yukon and I love the music scene here,” she says.

“It’s been so supportive and helped me start my career.”

Considering herself first and foremost a storyteller, as well as a lyricist and a vocalist, Rose is primarily self-taught, but wants to pass on her gifts to younger generations in addition to sharing her craft with audiences.

She’s been taking lessons to improve her skills in order to teach music to youth, and last fall completed the Women in Music Canada (WIMC) Entrepreneur Accelerator program.

“It’s been a busy few years,” she says.

Last year, Rose released her debut EP, Sprout, and is working on its follow-up now, which will be her first full-length record. She plans to release the first single this fall, as she has been documenting moments and feelings from her own life through her songwriting.

“It has pieces of my roots, the folk and country bits,” she says of the new music. “But I think it’s also alluding more to what is to come and showing more of my style. As I’m growing as an artist, I think I’m turning more to alternative rock and folk rock. I’m excited to share it.”

Titled Bloom and planned for a hopeful April 2026 release, the album will continue the theme set

by Sprout, and serve as the second entry in a trilogy following the life cycle of a rose.

“We’ve been putting in a lot of work and practice,” says Rose.

“I’m actually working towards something I’ve dreamt about since I was a little child,” she says. “It’s been really awesome.”

extensively next year, this summer Rose is keeping things mostly local with a mix of band and solo shows, kicking off a summer of northern shows with a performance at Winterlong Brewing Co.’s 10th anniversary celebration in May.

Rose will also be performing a solo set June 21 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC) for National Indigenous Peoples Day, and with her band that night at Lefty’s Well.

“We haven’t played at Lefty’s in almost a year,” she says. “It’ll be fun to step back into such a sweet local spot.”

After cutting her teeth in venues like Lefty’s and the Local Bar, the local spots will always have a place in Rose’s heart. Other local performances will include a July show at the Guild Hall in Whitehorse and an August show at the Village Bakery in Haines Junction.

Perhaps most exciting of all is a slot on the long-awaited return of the Atlin Arts & Music Festival, taking place July 11-13 in the northern B.C. community.

“Once upon a time, Gord Downie played this festival,” says Rose. “It’s pretty cool to be playing the same festival.”

Rose says every day she struggles to be true to the word “tenacity.” She admits the constant grind of being an artistentrepreneur can be a drain on her mental health, especially when she feels discouraged not landing opportunities she’s poured work into — but none of that is ever enough to make her give up, and it only makes her appreciate the wins more.

“Sometimes you’re doing admin work and you’re spending so much of your time on the computer, and you just want to be doing the music,” she says. “But it’s a handin-hand process, and I live for the performance – there’s nothing better in the world.”

Even though she gets nervous before she plays live, it’s still Rose’s favourite thing to do, and how she recharges her social battery. She remembers her father telling her when she was younger that if you don’t get nervous, it means you don’t care, and she carries that motto with her to this day.

“Putting your emotions into something physical, whether that’s art or building or whatever, it’s life-saving,” says Rose. “You don’t have to ingest or take something; there are good ways to channel your feelings, and I think it’s important to share that.” n

A HAPPY CAMPER SWITCHING GEARS Eight Helpful Tips: A Humorous Survival Guide To Camping With Three Generations 1. Bring plenty of food, and then double the amount.

The grandchildren eat a full breakfast at their own campsite.

Then they head over to our picnic table with an empty plate, begging for more food. Every single day.

2. Bring extra first aid supplies.

Face-planting, scraped knees, and unexpected allergic reactions are just a normal part of camping. Also, prepare for blisters, burns, bruises, insect bites, potential infections and the list goes on.

I

n a recent story published in What’s Up Yukon, I share many reasons my husband and I love to go camping. We leave the background noise of our daily lives behind us and welcome the sound of silence. We can truly relax and

enjoy our peaceful surroundings.

A few times a year we switch gears. We camp with our grown children, our grandchildren and extended family. We all leave behind the flurry of activities, agendas and commitments at

home. We have fun and enjoy each other’s company surrounded by the incredible beauty in one of our picturesque campgrounds.

The sound of silence has now been replaced by the sounds of camping fun and chaos!

3. Come prepared to share embarrassing and cringeworthy camping stories.

The grandchildren love to hear stories about their parents as children, such as when their mother accidentally stepped into a fresh cow pie wearing only her sandals.

Or, the origin story of our daughter’s excessive fear of wasps. She was playing under a tree at our campsite in the Kootenays and a nest of agitated wasps descended on her. Not a happy camper on that trip.

I still get sick to my stomach recalling the panic and scrambling to get engorged leeches off both of our daughter’s legs at Green Lake, located in the South Caribou region of B.C. This story always elicits groans and looks of disgust. Especially from me.

Not a fun experience to remove leeches, getting bigger by the second, off a screaming child.

Although it makes for a good story.

4. Bring playing games.

We don’t need a rainy day to play games. We always try to include our entire group, ages ranging from three to 75. Even the youngest can press the buzzer or turn over the egg timer.

The games vary each year.

New games are introduced and we enjoy old favourites. Some of our recent games include: Catch Phrase, Telestrations, Junior Pictionary, Taboo, Balderdash, Snakes and Ladders, many card games including a new one to us, Dutch Blitz.

Of course, we keep the games family-friendly. Our “Cards Against Humanity” game is gathering dust at the moment.

5. Prepare to step out of your comfort zone.

At our age we still require some form of agility, mobility and especially a fun, flexible attitude to camp with our children and grandchildren.

We join in on hikes, frisbeeplaying, tossing a baseball and playing badminton. We enjoy water sports, such as (trying to) balance on a surfboard, kayak, or canoe and swim across to the big log.

It may not always look pretty, especially when the canoe tips over and a part of our usually hidden anatomy is now exposed to whoever is nearby. At least we try our best and reinforce the saying, “there is no fool like an old fool.”

6. Bring plenty of snacks.

I realize I have already mentioned bringing plenty of food.

Snacks fall into a separate category. I am constantly reminded how children are growing human beings and always hungry. Grandparents are a good source of snacks and treats and we rarely say, “no.” cont’d on page 19 ...

My husband and I enjoy the tranquil sound of silence when we are camping on our own.

We also appreciate switching gears and the opportunity to camp with our children and extended family. A quiet camping experience has now been replaced with the sounds of camping fun and chaos.

Fast forward a few years from now and I hope our grandchildren will have the privilege and opportunity to take their own children camping. They will share camping traditions passed along from their parents and grandparents.

They will take their children on a hike through the forest, and a swim in the lake, appreciating nature and the joy of new adventures. They will play games and sit around the evening campfire sharing stories and giggles.

Most of all, they will share the priceless gift of spending fun, relaxing days together, with the people they love most … camping as a family. n

8. The evening campfire.

It is a magical feeling to see everyone sitting around the campfire and basking in the glow of a day well spent. The flames light up the tired, happy faces as we share stories and giggles about today’s adventures.

The evening campfire always includes roasting marshmallows, popping popcorn, and making s’mores. In past years we have made banana boats which include chocolate and miniature marshmallows tucked inside a banana and then wrapped in foil.

We heat this over the campfire, unwrap it and eat it with a spoon.

It tastes like a warm banana split sundae. Yummy!

ENGINE OIL Your Vehicle’s Operational Lifeline Without engine oil, serious damage can occur in a very short amount of time. Modern engine oils prevent blockages and contaminants from restricting oil flow. Oil breaks down and loses its properties over time, you should always check your oil on a regular basis. We recommend every 10,000km to 20,000km.

Some circumstances, may require more frequent changes. For example if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions like 4wding, towing, racing, or excessive stop-start driving.

It is also important to use the correct grade and specification of oil in your engine. Many modern European and diesel engines require certain additives which are present only in specific oil grades, and using the wrong specification can cause major and expensive engine and component damage.

ON THE CULINARY TRAIL IN SCOTLAND

W

e’ve dined on imaginative, delicious dishes like sea trout with langoustine emulsion at Café Gandalfi, for example, or fried artichokes, garlic yogurt and burnt Aleppo butter at Ox and Finch, a bistro near the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

On our last visit, from which we have just returned, we did not fare so well. I’m not sure why – perhaps a combination of ordering the wrong thing at the right restaurant, or choosing the wrong restaurant, or not getting to Glasgow until our second-last day.

This time, our best meals were at home, at my roommate’s brother’s place in Stewarton and at our rented cottage on the outskirts of Kingussie, near Cairngorm National Park. Kingussie boasted a butcher, indeed a renowned butcher — as the helpful welcome package from our host informed us.

We visited the butcher of renown on our very first morning and came home with a selection to last a few days: rib-eye steak, lamb chops, pork terrine, and for the two Scots in the party, blood pudding (cue a shudder from yours truly).

We concocted sauces with red wine, Sainsbury’s Double Cream (why do we not make double cream in this country?) blueberries from Morocco

and British tomatoes, cooking everything on the stove top because we couldn’t get the oven to work. We did not suffer.

Then, in Glasgow on that second-last day, after a train ride from Stewarton in a railway car jammed with (Catholic) Celtic football fans in green and white striped jerseys drinking from the bottle and banging the ceilings with their fists while roaring out Celtic cheers, after dodging the Orange walk of 2,500 people organized by the (Protestant) County Grand Lodge of Glasgow, we found a beautiful Spanish restaurant near George Square with a large patio on the shady side of the street — did I mention that it was really hot in Scotland for three whole weeks?

There, at last, we ate the kind of quality restaurant food we remembered, this time with an Andalusian twist. Tapas of grilled bruschetta with silky roasted tomatoes; oyster mushrooms and spinach cooked in white wine and cream with a cheesy gratin topping. A glass of Sangria and a foamy San Miguel beer and we were in heaven. (We left Glasgow on the mid-afternoon train to avoid getting caught up in any Celtic-Orange skirmishes!)

Now, back at home, with the gardening season looming and the prospect of fresh kale all summer long ahead, I felt compelled to use up the last of the frozen kale in a recreation of that splendid Spanish mushroom and spinach dish at Café Andaluz.

CREAMY MUSHROOM AND KALE GRATIN • 2 Tbsp butter • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1 cup finely chopped onion • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 4 cups of sliced cremini mushrooms

On our last several visits to Scotland, my roommate and I have grown accustomed to eating well in Glasgow restaurants

• 2 packed cups of finely chopped kale, thawed if frozen • 1/2 cup white wine • 1 cup 35% cream • 2 oz parmesan, grated (about 1 cup) • 4 oz mozzarella, grated (about 2 cups) • 6 Tbsp breadcrumbs • 1 Tbsp butter, melted

3. When most of the wine has cooked off, add kale and sauté until kale is cooked but still bright, about 3 to 4 minutes.

1. Melt butter and oil in a 10inch cast iron frying pan over medium heat. Once butter is sizzling, add onion. Sauté until soft and translucent, about 7 minutes. Remove onions from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.

2. Add mushrooms to the same pan. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until mushrooms have softened and released their juices. Turn heat to medium high and continue to sauté, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms are browned and crispy. Add white wine and garlic, reducing heat to medium.

5. Once cheese has melted, spoon the mixture into 8 1/2cup ramekins. (There might be some mixture leftover — refrigerate and save for another day. Eat within a few days).

4. Add cream. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add cheese, stirring until cheese is completely melted.

6. In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs and melted butter. Spoon breadcrumbs over each ramekin. Broil for 3 to 4 minutes, until golden brown.

7. Remove from oven. Serve immediately, accompanied by garlic bread.

Makes about 2 1/2 cups, enough for 8 to 10 servings.

GARLIC BREAD I learned this trick for quick and easy garlic bread from former Yukoner Philip Adams, a bold and inventive cook.

• 1/2 baguette, sliced into 1/4-inch slices • 1 large clove garlic • 1/4 to 1/3 cup olive oil • Salt and pepper 1.

Toast baguette slices in a 425F oven until edges are browned, about 5 minutes.

Slice garlic clove in half.

Rub one side of each slice of toasted bread with the garlic.

Crumbs of garlic will stay on the bread, almost as though the bread is a grater.

Pour oil into a dinner plate and add salt and pepper.

Press the garlicky side of the toasted bread slices into the oil, making sure the surface is coated. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Makes about 16 slices. n
