he long days of June and July are wonderful for getting things done. Everything, even nature around us, feels like it’s going non-stop. That also means, though, that sometimes self-care and our mental and emotional well-being takes a back seat. We give priority to “more important” things and forget to check-in with ourselves. That’s where a microadventure can come in.
Microadventure is a term that has gained popularity over the years, ever since British adventurer Alastair Humphreys wrote a book about the concept, back in 2014. Basically, a microadventure is a cheaper, more accessible and shorter version of what one usually would consider an adventure, but with a similarly refreshing and perspective-shifting effect. Ad-
ventures are a step away from the day-to-day and into the unknown, and they can often do wonders for our mental health. So, keeping in mind our busy summer schedules, here are a few microadventure ideas that might give you a much-needed mental and emotional boost. None are particularly expensive; in fact, most are free and they also require a bit of movement, which is said to be beneficial to your mental wellness, as well.
Make art outdoors
Maybe you consider yourself to be creative—or perhaps quite the opposite. Either way, why not spend an afternoon outside making some art for the pure fun of it? Relax and clear the clutter from your mind by grabbing some watercolours, pulling out your camera, taking along your journal or borrow-
ing some crayons. The medium doesn’t matter. You could even incorporate natural materials and found objects into your creation. Let yourself see things with fresh eyes: appreciate the details of the clouds in the sky, the medley of sounds a raven makes as it flies by or the way the trees cast their shadows. Why not go on an art microadventure and refresh your mind and your soul, with time spent outside in nature, by letting your imagination wander? If you’re looking for some inspiration, check out Created at the Canyon, a two-day event at Miles Canyon that is hosted by the Yukon Conservation Society and that features a whole
variety of local artists and creatives. This year’s theme is Salmon Runs & River Reflections and takes place on July 5 and 6.
Give yourself a day of silence and digital detox
Yes, a multi-day meditation or silent retreat can be an amazing way to reset and recharge, but it isn’t very realistic for many people. Much more doable is treating yourself to one day on your own. Disconnect from the distractions of your daily life and, instead, reconnect with yourself once again. We’re lucky to live in a place where it’s not that hard to get away from the crowds, so why not take yourself on a little excursion to your favourite quiet place, get up early to catch the sunrise, pack a snack, breathe
deeply—maybe even take a cold plunge in a lake, on the way or spend the day barefoot to ground yourself more thoroughly in the present moment. Put aside your usual routine and go about your day intentionally, away from your phone and social media, and remember what it feels like to enjoy your own company.
Play like a little kid
My daughter is about to turn one and I’m convinced that she has things way more figured out than I do. She expresses her emotions freely and honestly, knows what she wants, follows her curiosity and is a master at finding joy and pleasure in the little things. For a little kid, everything and anything can be a microadventure—a moment by the river, a trip to the farmers’ market or an hour cleaning out your fridge can all be equally fun with the right perspective and attitude. Invite your grandkids over, call up your nieces or nephews or set aside a weekend of spontaneity just to spend with your own kids. If that’s not possible, try to remember what it felt like when
Playfulness is key to our emotional and mental well-being
you, yourself, were a kid; and try to tap into that inner child that’s still somewhere inside of you. What was your favourite thing to do outside when you were small? I remember creating whole worlds just with a few sticks, some pine cones and a handful of dandelion blossoms.
Children can teach us so much about letting go of control and being more playful instead of fearful. Get into the spirit of finding adventures all around you by reading a children’s book such as Addie Ant Goes
cont’d from page 2
Reconnect with your inner child and get inspired by Addie Ant
On An Adventure, a charmingly told story of adventuring in your own backyard. Illustrated by Kelly Anne Dalton and written by Maren Morris & Karina Argow, it came out new this spring.
Get acquainted with your natural surroundings
Loneliness can seep into our lives without us noticing it. Sometimes it’s triggered by moving to a new place or by some specific life event, but often it’s just time that gradually causes us to drift away from other people and to wake up, one day, feeling very much alone. At a certain point in life, making new friends becomes much harder, and it’s difficult to know where to start. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you how to find your community of people; but what I can tell you is that we’re never really alone.
On the most-fundamental level, we will always have the earth beneath our feet, and the sky and the sun above. Those things will be constants in our lives until the day we die. If you can learn to feel awe and wonder about the natural world around you, I promise you that you will feel less alone. Friends and even family can come and go, but this will always be here for you. Whether you’re hiking up a mountain or sitting on a bench at the park, marvel at the incredible biodiversity around you. Use an app or a guidebook to get to know the names of the plants and animals you cross paths with. Make their acquaintance, look up their original traditional names, learn a little something about them. Keep an eye out for the moon in the sky, feel the warmth of the sun on your skin and listen to the wind in the trees. Enter into a relationship with the seasons and the environment around you, with gratitude, and you will always feel like you belong to something.

The 1st Whitehorse Scouting group has announced that two of its youth have succeeded in achieving their Chief Scout Award. The Chief Scout Award is the top Section award in the 11-to-14-year-old category on the Canadian Path.
To achieve the Chief Scout award, scouts must complete a minimum of 18 Outdoor Adventure Skill stages for their age and time they were involved in Scouting. The demonstrable skills can include climbing, sailing, scout craft, camping, hiking trails, winter skills, canoeing, aquatic and emergency skills, according to Scouter Dale Bort.
John Andersen and Rowan MacDonald are the Yukon’s two latest scouts to earn the Chief Scout Award. The two achieved all-seasons camping, fire making, cooking, climbing, rope making and knots, as well as participating in many hikes and ice-fishing expeditions. Additionally, they both have their First Aid certifications.
“I thank my family, peers and Scouters who were there to encourage me,” says Andersen. Andersen and MacDonald have also joined Scout groups
from across the country that came camping to the Yukon, plus participated in a week-long tour and camping adventure in the territory during Summer of 2022. They will both be attending the Scout Jamboree this summer on Vancouver Island.
“We participated in many outdoor adventures that were great,” comments MacDonald. “We had fun and we joined other groups from Victoria and Vancouver, Regina, Calgary and Quebec that came to explore our Yukon outdoors.”
Along with the skills they have shown, the Scouts needed to complete 30 hours of community service. This included helping clear paths of fallen trees, helping an elderly couple move and picking up garbage in the city.
“Scouting should be a journey, an adventure that brings life values, makes friendships, builds teamwork and character,” says Bort. “To be a Chief Scout should say you are respectful, have courage in times of difficulty, and [are] committed to the Scout Promise: to be helpful and trustworthy, to be kind and cheerful, to be considerate and clean. John and Rowan were

selected by their peers and Scouters to receive this award and it was approved by our Scout Commissioner.”
Andersen and MacDonald received accreditation towards their schooling for attaining their Chief Scout award. The award ceremony was held in May, with their certificates presented by Commissioner Adeline Webber.
“It warms my heart to have had the privilege to know John and Rowan and to see them mature over the years they were involved in Scouts,” says Bort. “We had tough times during Covid, making their community service difficult, but they hung in. To see them accomplish this award has made me proud of them. I hope Scouting has had a positive influence in their life.
“Also, we are pleased to announce that there are two youths From Faro—Monica Kazda and Olive Passmore—receiving their Chief Scout award this year … Congratulations!”

Pity. That is the first feeling I get while reading Nadine Sander-Green’s coming-ofage novel, Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit (recently published by House of Anansi Press). Feelings of pity soon turn into feelings for the protagonist, Millicent. As the atmosphere and landscape of the Yukon shape in the reader’s mind, the protagonist is running into a toxic relationship one would like to prevent her from.
The story drew me in from the first page.
Millicent is a shy 24-year-old reporter coming to Whitehorse to work for a local newspaper called Golden Nugget. The protagonist has no experience in media work, nor does she know what to do at a press conference. Do I have to run after the premier like the other journalists? she asks herself during a press conference. Millicent studied creative writing and wanted to be a poet. She has no experience in journalism. When she is assigned to interview a filmmaker living in a converted school bus, she falls in love with him. Soon the affair turns toxic.
Millicent is very green and doesn’t have a clue about the Yukon when she arrives there in September. She describes Whitehorse as a city with two faces: If one doesn’t look too closely, Whitehorse was like a small city down south, with hotels, shops and tourists. But there is another side to it, with dark winter, seasonal depression, poverty, and people living in Walmart parking lots. Pascal, the eccentric filmmaker living in the school bus, tells Millicent what
her life could look like. They could travel and be artists; she could write her poems and he could make films. Millicent will soon discover that he is lying to her about film assignments which don’t exist. She doesn’t see the red flags because she doesn’t have much experience in relationships. As a reader, you feel the red flags immediately. Suddenly, Pascal is pushing her away from her family. When Millicent moves into the school bus with Pascal, things get worse.
There is more to the novel than a love story that turned toxic. Nadine Sander-Green writes about land issues in the territory. She uses The Vista as a synonym for The Peel. In her book, elections are coming up and First Nations want to protect The Vista from mining. A fictitious company named Gold Power wants to build a mine in The Vista. Like Millicent, Nadine Sander-Green came to the Yukon to work as a reporter for a local newspaper. She covered the reporting about the Peel Watershed back in 2011 when the First Nations took the Yukon government to the Supreme Court—and won.
A scene that stands out for me in the book is when one of the reporters of the Golden Nugget says to Millicent that he and Millicent are stealing. Because they drive up from the south, take jobs, land, and stories. And then they call it home. “Isn’t this the same as stealing land?” is the question the co-worker asks her. A question that makes one think. Is telling stories about the North, stealing? Nadine Sander-Green
tells the story of Millicent and the Yukon land issues, with care and purpose. The author has lived in the Yukon on and off for eight years.
Nadine Sander-Green said, in an interview with the Cranbrook Daily Townsman newspaper, that it took her almost a decade to write this book. It went through many drafts and went from being similar to her story, to a more fictionalized plot. She makes it clear that it is not a memoir; it’s fiction. And anyone who has ever experienced a toxic relationship can relate to the story.
As the author said in an interview with CBC, it can happen to anyone. Because love bombing and promises of toxic people are so compelling. When you fall for it, you are blinded and can’t see the red flags pointing in the direction of a toxic relationship.
Like Millicent, Nadine SanderGreen came to the Yukon to work for a local newspaper, the Whitehorse Star. She grew up in Kimberley, British Columbia, and has lived in Victoria, Toronto and the Yukon. She also worked in a variety of jobs, including for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society in the Yukon. She met her partner in the Yukon and they moved to Calgary, where they are living today with their family.
Nadine Sander-Green completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Guelph. In 2015, Nadine Sander-Green won the RBC PEN Canada New Voices Award for writers under 30. Her writing has appeared in the Globe and
hildren have a lot of energy. It’s true. And as a parent of a little boy who is about to turn four, I am constantly looking for new ways to help him exert that energy and exercise his growing body in fun and engaging ways.
Enter soccer.
In the past I have seen those adorable pictures of young children playing soccer in their colourful Timbit jerseys. And I always thought that one day, when I had children of my own, I would love to get them involved in something like that. I hoped that my little one would show an interest in group sports and that this could be an activity that they could pursue.
So when I heard that Whitehorse United FC, a local soccer club in the Yukon, was offering opportunities for children, age three and older, I was ecstatic. I was even more excited that my son wanted to join a team as well. I eagerly watched for registration for the Under 4 (U4) group to become available and I happily got my son all signed up for the season, which began early this May.
Having participated in little league softball as a child, I loved the opportunities I had to get outside, make new friends and play. Sure, we never won a game, but my memories of losing every single game were never sad ones. I loved it. And I think a big part of that was the fact that my coaches never seemed to put pressure on us to win. They wanted us to enjoy the game knowing that as long as we kept playing, our skills would do nothing but grow.
And I was extremely pleased to see that the U4 group would allow my child the same type of experience. With a focus on developing skills and a love for
the game, children are allowed to explore the sport of soccer through lively activities and games that help build their physical literacy. I’ve witnessed first-hand how learning a variety of core soccer skills in a lowpressure environment offers a fantastic chance for the introduction of the sport in a way that builds children’s confidence and provides an opportunity for some good ol’ family fun.
Angie, a local mom and friend of mine, said her family has enjoyed it so much that this is the second time they have participated. Angie went on to say that her four-year-old daughter, Ellie, enjoys soccer because it’s social and skill-based. And that this combination of games and the learning of new skills is a large draw for her daughter and their family to join in each week.
laugh sometimes. You see some children who are really listening— practising their skills with real intention; and then there are others (my son included), who just want to roll around in the grass, chase each other and kick the ball as far as they can.
The sessions are 45 minutes, which attunes to the short attention spans of little ones, and the coaches show impeccable patience and care as they engage with the children and try to get them involved. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate with their children, providing them with a teammate that they are already comfortable with. And it has been so much fun to see all the families running around, laughing and having a blast together.
It really is amusing to watch.
My husband and I take turns playing the games with our son, and in my moments of being a spectator, I cannot help but
It sometimes looks like us adults are trying to herd a group of cats. And, honestly, bless the incredible coaches and their accompanying youth helpers for their understanding of children at this age. They recognize the need for breaks and the varying needs of children and their families. And they do a fabulous job of providing a variety of short activities that appeal to all while still incorporating those skill-building techniques for the developmental levels of children under four.
Listening
I truly am grateful for the chance my son has received through this wonderful learning experience. My heart is happy when I hear him say how much he loves soccer and when he asks me to play with him in our driveway at home.
Yes, he is still working on developing his soccer skills, but the seed of love for the game has been planted, and that is the most I can hope for. I honestly can’t wait to watch how this love will develop over time and how his techniques and coordination will progress. But most of all, I can’t wait for the chance to sit in the crowd of his first official game and cheer him on! ■

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively.
Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air. Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

It is relatively a new profession, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a practicing end-oflife doula in Whitehorse. Kim Winnikey’s company, Passages, offers many services to guide and support terminally ill patients and their families and friends through their final days..
Since the role of an end-of-life doula is as diverse as their clients, I asked Kim what her niche is. She said she is strongest at “being present with whatever arises for a given client or in a given session. Sometimes this is sitting with intense emotions or existential questions; other times it is connecting people with resources and tools to meet specific needs.
“Supporting clients in identifying what is important to them at this moment: Is it repairing a ruptured relationship? Or legacy work like scrapbooks, life reviews or video montages? Is it setting up their space to be comfortable, sacred and supportive? Some people request support in tying up paperwork and administration.”
She also finds a lot of meaning in “supporting caregivers, friends and family members by providing short-term respite care, suggesting resources or by simply being fully present as they share their grief and stories. Actively listening and being fully present is so supportive of healing and growth.”
Kim’s comfort around the death stems from the fact that her father was a funeral director in northern Alberta. One of her earliest memories from the funeral home was picking out her casket when she was five and planning her funeral a few years later (and updating those plans every few months). This normalized death for her and allowed her to be comfortable with the intense emotions and grief that often come with death.
My sister, Valerie Lykkemark, is a death doula in Victoria, B.C. Like Kim, Valerie completed the Douglas
College End-of-Life Doula Training Program, as well as other online
courses. Kim has volunteered for Hospice Yukon for eight years, and Valerie volunteers at Victoria Hospice.
Before Valerie became a death doula, she had worked, for years, coordinating volunteers for cancer patients in Victoria. She knew what services were available for terminal patients and how to navigate the healthcare system, so she thought that
that would be her main role as a death doula. Through her training, she discovered that her empathy and inner knowing were strong assets. She discovered a love of creating altars and rituals to empower the family and friends to better support the dying person.
I witnessed this power last Christmas when we thought that our mom was dying.
Mom was in the hospital, shaky, not eating much and too weak to even sit up on her own. Valerie recognized other nonmedical signs that Mom was nearing the end. She was going through her “end of life review,” reliving pivotal moments in her life. For example, the day we were waiting for the ambulance to transport her to her new nursing home, she was positive that people were arriving for her garage sale (on the other side of the hospital curtain), which had happened 10 years ago after Dad had died. It was a
Mom’s altar, with her grandchildren’s hearts hanging above it
traumatic experience for her at the time, and heart-wrenching to watch her anxiety as she relived it in that hospital room. I was glad that Valerie had explained to me what was happening so I could appreciate experiencing this stage of life.
Valerie created a beautiful altar, back at Mom’s old place where we were staying, with photos of my dad and of my mom’s parents. Every night we would light the candles, share a moment of silence and then say or do whatever felt right at the moment. We called on our mother’s many friends and relatives who had already passed—to come guide

her on her journey. We thanked the universe for the 92 years that Mom has spread her love on this Earth, and prayed that she would soon receive it all back in heaven. Sometimes we sang a song, did some yoga, danced around the room … whatever felt right.
Valerie’s morning ritual was going for a long walk through Fish Creek Park, for her own health and well-being. She enjoyed looking at the half-frozen river, comparing it to my mom’s spirit journey (starting to flow home, but still frozen in places). We knew that one reason Mom didn’t want to let go was that she was still worried about some of her kids and grandkids. So, as all of our family began arriving for their possibly last visit with Mom, Valerie added another ritual to her walk. She would pull a “worry stick” out of a big beaver dam, for each visitor, and fling it out into the current.
It seemed to help a bit. Mom quit stressing about her kids
and grandkids. Instead, she was worrying about how she was going to get to the airport and where her passport was. When we asked where she was going, she couldn’t tell us. Valerie knew that getting ready to get on the train or plane is common before someone dies. When we suggested that maybe the trip was to heaven, to see our dad, she would look at us like we were nuts. Valerie had already made sure she had all of her Advanced Care Planning: Mom had indicated that she didn’t want medical intervention, so we arranged for her to be put on Comfort Care.
It was both solacing and refreshing, for me, to be with someone who wasn’t afraid of death or afraid of talking about it.
Valerie and I visited the funeral home together and learned about the plan that Mom and Dad had bought years ago. We started working on her obituary and discussing Celebration of Life plans. When they moved Mom to a nursing home, we wrote out endof-life instructions in case Mom died in her sleep. We asked that they contact us before the funeral home so we could spend some time with her body before it was taken to the crematorium. I was grateful to have my own death doula to guide and support me through these plans. Valerie made it feel like an honour to witness our mom’s last journey, and we felt many moments of magic and peace.
As it turned out, Mom got moved to a nursing home where they took such good care of her
that she regained some strength. She still can’t walk, is often too shaky to feed herself and is very depressed, but her spirit is holding on. Everyone recognizes that
When I asked Valerie why she named her company RiversEnd, she explained, “This speaks to my passion for water, which
giving birth is hard labour, but so is dying. Valerie explained to our family (and to Mom) that Mom will eventually lose her appetite and will stop eating and fade away. I hope to be there when that happens—to hold vigil—and I am comforted to know that Valerie will be there too.
questions about the end of life and what comes after.”
Like Kim planned her funeral, at seven years old, Valerie encourages everyone to make an end- of-life plan. The more details you can write down about what you want—as far as medical intervention, celebration of life, donating organs, and burial—it will take a lot of stress off of the loved ones you leave behind.
“Remember, when you start talking about death, the values of which you currently live your life are highlighted. So, by thinking about how you want to die, you actually end up living a better life that aligns with your truth.
“Don’t be afraid to say the ‘D’ word. It won’t make it come faster but we all get to take a turn

Nature does things well ...
When there is no flower left in winter, the shiny red of wild fruit pops up right when they are needed. Full of vitamins and nutrients, thanks to the light they gathered over the summer, these berries offer a necessary support, over the winter, to the local fauna. Visible from far away (thanks to their colour), birds, foxes, rabbits, bears and other mammals are able to treat themselves to rosehips when their organisms are the most fragile. Foraging these berries should be done sparingly and on trees with an abundance of them.
I love testing recipes with rosehips. It is possible to eat them right from the trees, to make the most of the vitamins. The little stinging hairs inside the fruits can be allergenic on the skin but do not do much to the intestines. They can also be fermented in a brine and eaten, throughout the winter, directly from the jar. I also like to freeze them and keep them for cooking muffins! I usually cut the hips in half, with the hairs and seeds removed with a butter knife before freezing them. Light and fruity, those muffins are delish eaten warm or cold, accompanied with yogurt.
INGREDIENTS FOR 12 MUFFINS
• ½ cup unsalted butter
• 2 eggs
• 1 cup thick yogurt
• 3 cups flour
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 3/4 cups sugar
• 2 cups rosehips
• Zest of 1 lemon
• Enough oats for topping

Sophie is in her 30s and is French. She studied and worked in the U.K. and in Senegal, before moving to Canada. The time she spent in the Yukon changed her life for the best. She developed a true interest for quiet, wild spaces and for a more rural life. She is now back in France, starting a goat farm in the countryside and sharing stories from Europe!
1. Preheat oven to 350 F and lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin (or line with papers).
2. Melt butter in a pot and leave to cool. Mix with eggs and yogurt in a bowl.
3. In a separate bowl, beat flour, baking powder and sugar. Add this combination to the egg mixture and gently whisk by adding the flour from the side to the center of the container.
4. Add the hips and the lemon zest. Scoop the batter into the moulds and sprinkle with a tiny bit of sugar and a handful of oat flakes.
5. Place in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the muffins are well puffed and golden brown. Let them cool for 5 minutes, then remove them to a wire rack to cool completely. The muffins can be kept in a hermetic box for three days, or in the freezer.
Note: If you don’t have lemon, orange zest can be used. You can also add cinnamon to the topping. ■

hen you’re driving along the Mud Bay Road in Haines, Alaska, just before you turn onto the Chilkat State Park Road malarky of potholes and washboard, there is a small property that houses a couple of wizards. You’ll know the place by its sign, Extreme Dreams. Pull in.
Here, in this shop, John and Sharon Svenson sell their work. John is a glass artist and a watercolourist; Sharon makes glass mosaics.
They each have their own studios, in which there are kilns, there are sheets or sticks of glass in shimmering colours, there are cutting tools and sources of flame. There is everywhere evidence of two creative minds, busy making
beauty, partly to sell but mostly for the love of creating.
“With a foundation in watercolour, I’ve been utilizing powdered glass and the heat of kilns to fuse multiple layers together, giving painterly effects,” said John. “Still primarily a painter, I had initially drifted to flame working and fusing as a therapeutic alternative, but once going down that glass path, there is no turning back. My goal in life has been to enjoy what I’m doing and, so far, it has been nothing but fun!”
Sharon’s work has gradually and naturally evolved from woven tapestry to mosaics, she said. “Both involve fragments of colours assembled and arranged to make a picture or pattern. There is endless

joy for me in this slow process.” Sharon was born in Whitehorse and moved to Haines when she was three. After graduating high school in the late 1960s, she got the heck out to San Francisco for a couple of years. In those years she met John, a veteran of the Yosemite climbing scene. Together they moved back to Haines and began building a homestead. Now their place is one of those great, funky Haines collections of main house, outbuildings, gardens, an outhouse, a firepit and a guest sleeping house made entirely of glass. And, of course, the shop. When you visit the shop, it is usually John who appears. He will walk you through the art, open drawers and bring out treasures. He might even show you how to
1. Drain salmon, reserving the liquid for adding to stock or augmenting the pets’ dinners. Place in a medium-sized bowl.
2. Break apart the salmon, skin included, with a fork or your hands, and mix until it’s a uniform texture with no big pieces.
3. Stir in the remaining ingredients, using a light touch, until thoroughly combined.
4. Shape into 4 patties of an even size.
5. Pour 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs onto a large dinner plate. Coat each patty with crumbs. Refrigerate for about an hour before cooking, if you have the time.
6. Heat butter and olive oil over medium heat in a cast-iron frying pan. When it’s bubbling, place salmon cakes in the pan.
make a glass bead, all the while telling his stories and soliciting yours.
My husband and I were lucky enough to be John and Sharon’s guest for a supper of deep-fried halibut, the best I’d ever tasted.
(John and my husband worked together years ago on a movie shot in the Haines Pass.) We were lucky enough to sleep in the glass guest house the night it rained.
When we left, Sharon pressed delightful gifts into our hands: a bottle of her own highbush cranberry liqueur. Two jars of
canned smoked hooligan, the tiny smelt that has fuelled Indigenous peoples up and down the West Coast, for centuries, traded through a network of “grease trails” leading from coast to interior. And, two precious jars of home-canned salmon. Now, I’m not saying that if you drop into Extreme Dreams, you will leave with canned salmon. But I am saying you’ll find a world that sparkles with colour, just as Dorothy and her companions found in Oz, at the end of the Yellow Brick Road.
2 Tbsp breadcrumbs, plus 1/2 cup for coating (more as needed) ❑ 1 Tbsp butter ❑ 1 Tbsp olive oil ❑ 1/4 cup mayonnaise ❑ 1 tsp Dijon mustard
7. Cook for 4 minutes each side, until crisp and golden.
8. Serve on sourdough buns with lots of tartar sauce, arugula, tomatoes, sliced cucumber and green onions.
Makes 4 servings.
1 Tbsp capers, coarsely chopped
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
❑ Salt and pepper, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. If you have time, chill for a couple of hours before serving.
Makes about 1/3 cup—enough for four salmon cakes (but double the recipe, why not!) ■

This summer, Wendy is launching the 50 Lakes Project. She will SUP 50 Yukon lakes within three to four hours of Whitehorse and will create a guidebook profiling the 50 lakes and their stories. See you out on the water.
tand-up paddleboarding 50 Yukon lakes in a single season will take some good planning and a lot of luck. For me, the season was off to a slow and awkward start. After an early first paddle on Schwatka Lake, I tried to get a jump-start on the other 49.
Early attempts to stand-up paddleboard (SUP) came with some typical Yukon challenges. I was blocked by ice and pelted with blowing snow and hail. I was blown off a lake, after only 15 minutes, by sudden gusts and high winds. One launch was delayed during a wildland firemanagement training session, with its helicopter continuously dropping its water-scooping Bambi Bucket or Heli bucket into the lake, dropping the load onto its target on Grey Mountain and then circling back.
Finally, the lakes opened and the weather improved. But that came alongside waves of family needs, illness and work deadlines. Slowly, I carved out bits of time to make it to the next lake.
Then there was the dreaded check-engine light on the van, and various gear issues—each thwarting my paddle plans. Beneath all of the weather, life and logistical challenges, I could feel the bigger hurdle.
Fear and anxiety had built up over the past months. This winter (even this past year) seemed
like a harder one to shake off. There was the imposter syndrome that
The day ahead
was about facing my lake nemesis. Feeding my nervous stomach an early breakfast of hot coffee
and oatmeal, I launched my SUP. It was a beautiful, quiet morning. The water was serene; only the laziest ripples made an appearance on its surface.
It was the calmest I had ever experienced Lake Laberge. It had been 15 years since I raced the 2010 Yukon River Quest as part of a tandem canoe team. That was a year of high winds that reached 25 knots, with one-metre-high waves. Not surprisingly, a number of teams capsized. Our tandem canoe made it off the lake without dumping, but only due to the ace talents of my paddle partner in the stern.
The year before the wind-lashing of the race, I paddled Lake Laberge with a friend from France.

Rest, easy. Fantastic rates on air and hotel packages.
The best way to organize a quick British Columbia or Alberta getaway is also the most affordable. Visit Air North Getaways now airnorth.vacations
A slow start cont’d from page 18
A day that had started calm had turned wild with the winds … and quickly. Our canoe got pinned at the end of the lake. We hunkered down on a beach, we flipped our canoe on its side to use as a wind block, made a meal and settled in for the evening. We waited out the wind for six hours before we could carry on to the Yukon River.
After those two experiences, I confess that I hadn’t been back on Laberge until this season. The 50 Lakes expedition was motivation to push through the challenges and fears. Momentum and luck then turned.
Suddenly, I was flying through the list. Lake by lake, the early season kinks got worked out. The van got a check. Items got patched and repaired. My systems were sorted and I stopped forgetting things. My movements of getting my board, paddle and gear from the van to the lake became quick and efficient. The pack of anxieties and the fear of the unknown floated away.
Each lake brought a moment of pure joy, of memory or laughter.
Like Mary Lake. It was my first time paddling this small lake that wraps around the far side of its subdivision namesake. The evening weather was stunning and I found some lovely gems. The beaver lodges were the headline of the night. The west side of the lake has the long-ago abandoned section of the White Pass railway, with its tracks and telegraph lines slowly being taken over by nature.
Mary Lake
Seeing the beaver lodge built into and over the old railway tracks made me chuckle. On the paddle back, I saw another beaver lodge. Woven amongst thousands of sticks and mud, I saw a lost paddle that a beaver made good use of and that is now a part of its lodge.
On Braeburn Lake, a female elk with her baby splashed along a sand spit between the shore and a small island. A pair of muskrats played peekaboo from their hole as I passed by. The white petals of the Northern anemones opened in
bloom along the shoreline. I was enjoying the meditative paddle strokes and the overwhelming beauty of the landscapes. And the tears started flowing. I could feel the full-body release of the stress from the past weeks. I was fully in the moment, feeling like I was exactly where I should be.
As we head into summer solstice, the cobwebs of the season’s start have been shaken off. Ahead, a summer of more magical moments awaits. ■
