Paris Pick makes her a natural to compete in the Style Icon contest
Wherever she goes, Paris Pick’s inimitable style goes with her. For example, when she calls me from the Fraser, B.C., highways maintenance camp, where she’s working as the cook, she tells me that she just dyed her hair pink because she’s turning 31 the next day. “I’m not going into my ‘thirty-one era’ without some colour,” she says.
*Style Icon: the online competition presented by Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, is open for voting; and Yukon’s own Paris Pick is in the running for most iconic style.
The confidence she gains from her fashion is something she also brings to the stage and to performing. She said that her look also adds to the intrigue for new audiences who aren’t familiar with her music; they see discoball earrings and don’t know what to expect.
Before she left the Yukon, a few years ago, to go to music school in Nelson, B.C., Pick was recognized not only for her catchy pop songs but also for her bold, irrepressible fashion sense. Pick might be sporting glasses with oversize frames and a leopardprint catsuit, one day, and a vintage wedding dress with sparkly crocs the next. It’s fair to say that her campy, mash-up style can give an early Elton John vibe.
It’s no wonder, then, that Pick is a quarter-finalist in Style Icon, an online competition presented by Elton John and his husband, David Furnish.* If Pick wins, she’ll receive a trip to Versace Fashion Week in Milan, a feature in Flaunt magazine and $20,000 cash.
But for Pick, it’s not all about the prizes; it’s about the cause that the contest supports—the Elton John AIDS Foundation, an organization “committed to overcoming HIV and LGBTQ+ stigma, discrimination and neglect that prevents us from ending AIDS for everyone, everywhere.”
People vote for their favourite contestant: one vote is free, but you can also donate money in exchange for votes (e.g., 10 votes for $10; 25 votes for $25), with proceeds going to the Foundation. Pick figures that, whether
she wins or not, she’s using platforms like Facebook and Instagram to promote her Style Icon page and to raise money and awareness about AIDS.
“We use social media all the time to, like, rot our brain,” she says. “So why not use it for something good for once, you know?”
As a self-described “dirt-bag trailer-park princess,” Pick creates her looks from second-hand items she finds in thrift and free stores (her first pair of beloved Crocs came from the Mount Lorne Transfer Station).
She draws inspiration from superstars of the 1970s and 80s: Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackon, Cyndi Lauper. She loves vintage clothes but doesn’t confine herself to any one era. In her photo spread for Style Icon, Pick wears an eclectic sampling of looks: a ruffled poet shirt, with disco-ball earrings; a black, white and gold-printed romper with fishnet stockings and pink boots; a lace-up vest, floppy cap, and square glasses that channel Janis Joplin.
Pick considers fashion as empowering and hopes that she can encourage others to explore their personal style as a means of selfdiscovery and self-expession.
“Finding my fashion helped me unlock so many pieces of my personality and self-confidence, and I’ll forever be grateful for that,” Pick says in an Instagram post.
“[My style is] kind of part of the music, you know, like my music’s very uplifting and upbeat So I guess also having loud outfits that kind of mimic that energy helps.”
At the same time, Pick doesn’t take herself too seriously. When I suggest she has a glam side to her style, she agrees but also emphasizes that she’s “a really lazy person” and that comfort always trumps glamour.
“I could actually look a lot more glamorous if I tried, but I just don’t care that much,” she says. “I want to express myself … but for me, that means being comfortable, like, you know, comfort comes first.”
Pick brings the same chill attitude to winning the Style Icon competition. She finds the idea of travelling to Milan and winning $20,000 to be “unreal” unless it actually happens. For now, she’s focused on donations for the Foundation, and she’s raised over $1,000 so far. But if she were to win, she says that she would use some of the money towards buying a home for her mom, who was the original inspiration for Pick’s second-hand aesthetic. “It’s important to take care of family,” Pick concludes.
People can vote for Paris Pick as a Style Icon, daily, at styleicon. org, either for free or by donation to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Visit eltonjohnaidsfoundation.org for more information. ■

HOGWARTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Oh there’s no place like Hogwarts for the holidays
Until 2008, I carried on Christmas traditions from my childhood. I wrapped presents, made a fancy meal, did some decorating and sang along with carols.
But that year, I was far from home and by myself. Christmas Day was bracingly cold, crisp and sunny, and I went for a wonderful long walk in the countryside. Back at my apartment, I made a few phone calls to family, then pulled out the gift mailed to me by my husband—the final volume of the Harry Potter series. He knew I was a big fan. As I curled up in my rocking chair to begin reading, I realized how little I remembered from books one to six. So I rummaged through boxes I hadn’t even unpacked yet, pulled them out and started over from the very beginning. Suddenly, there I was—transported to Hogwarts for Christmas. Harry and his friends always found presents at the foot of the bed, and there was, each year, a wonderful feast followed by silly fun with what the Brits call “crackers.”
Even reading the books the second time around, I loved all the mystery and adventure and humour and heartache. So
I decided I would go there, to Hogwarts and Privet Drive and The Burrow, every December over the holidays. I pick up the first book each year on December 20 or 21. I read from the time I get up in the morning until I go to sleep at night, with a few breaks for simple meals and bracing walks.
Even though I know what’s going to happen in the stories, I still feel the suspense. I still appreciate the multidimensional characters. I still laugh and cry in the same places. I still look forward to my favourite scenes. I finished number seven around January 4. I must say it’s a bit strange coming back to the real world. That’s how it felt for me in the old days of celebrating a more-traditional Christmas when I took down the tree and put away the decorations. Returning from Hogwarts is an even longer trip. But that return is pleasingly informed by two important aspects of the Harry Potter books. One is how neatly and brilliantly all the loose ends of plot and character are knitted together and tied up in the long run. I have to pay close attention to details and remember to hold
onto dangling storyline threads along the way. It’s good mental exercise for brains of any age.
The other has to do with the exceptional role model for a senior that is Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I love his sometimes wacky humour, his gentle guidance, his respectful treatment of others (no matter their philosophical differences or
questionable alliances), his strategic thinking, his remorse and humility concerning his own mistakes—not to mention that he’s one heck of a powerful wizard! I feel as though I soak up some of his strength and wisdom every year as I read through our shortest days and longest nights. The other old guy who makes an appearance at this time of year is, of course, Santa Claus. There aren’t seven long books about him—really just one poem, Clement Moore’s A Visit from St. Nicholas Santa doesn’t seem to have a life story; we’re not given any personal information or a look into his private moments. But he’s a memorable symbol of generosity and good cheer, with an infectious laugh. And I guess he’s a powerful wizard, too, if he can fly his sleigh all around the world in one night!
So whether this time of year holds a promise of presents (or not), fine meals (or not), and decorations (or not), let it be filled with inspiring and powerful magic, love of stories and the wonder of imagination. They are the gifts that keep on giving, year after year, no matter how old or young we are. ■

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM FOR PARIS PICK
With her third album out, the B.C.based singersongwriter looks back on her time in the Yukon
Paris Pick is still well-known in the Yukon. Though she’s primarily based in B.C. now, it was in Whitehorse where she got her start as a musician, frequenting open-mic nights and local showcases, eventually becoming a driving force within the Yukon music scene, both on and off the stage. Before she packed up for Nelson, B.C., to attend Selkirk College, Pick performed prolifically while also organizing events and mentoring younger artists. Her newest album under her solo
partner, Damien Alblas, lending his skills for additional guitar parts on one song.
Some musicians Pick had in her band when she wrote the songs for the record—including Elijah Bekk, SelinaHeyligers-Hare, and Aki Jonasson—did not play on the record, but Pick recognizes their importance in helping shape the songs.
“When we started recording, it was the core group of myself, Aiden and Patrick,” Pick says. “I moved away for music school,
Paris Pick released her newest album, Third Time’s A Charm, in September 2025
The former Yukon-based artist now resides in B.C. but plans to perform in the territory again in 2026
moniker, This Time’s A Charm, was released in September.
“I had written a bunch of these songs back in 2021,” she says. “We began recording the album in the spring of 2022, so I had time to sit on a pile of songs I felt good about.” Pick is always the principal songwriter in her work, and works with whichever of her usual musicians are available at any given time.
On Third Time’s A Charm, the follow-up to 2018’s Feeling Love and 2021’s Hope for the Best, Pick worked with a host of musicians including Zacharie Pelland on guitar; Aiden Tentrees on bass; Patrick Docherty on drums; Lonnie Powell on percussion; Dave Satanove on trumpet; producer Jordy Walker on synths; and Pick’s
and that kind of put everything on pause.”
As she’s found her footing and what sounds she wants to strive for and is moving into more of a yacht-pop sound from her soulpop roots, Pick says her overarching idea for her newest album was to contemporize the 1970s yachtrock style, mixing it with modern indie-pop elements.
“It’s kind of a weird mix of everything,” Pick says. I’m actually realizing more and more that I’m not as yacht-pop as I thought I was, because I’ve come across some yacht-pop artists who are copy-pasting the sound of the ’70s. I think I’m actually not doing that; I’m doing something different.”
Sometimes in life, Pick says,
it takes a few times to get something right. That can mean a relationship, a personal goal or something else entirely—like a record. Like any serious artist, Pick places high expectations on herself and hopes that, with each record she makes, she gets closer to achieving her full vision.
“It’s just funny that it worked out that way, that it’s my third album,” she says. “It’s just that hopeful attitude of giving it another try.”
Pick took on a co-producer role for this record, something she’d gotten more comfortable doing after her previous experiences making records. She says on her first go with Feeling Love, she let producer Patrick Hamilton handle

A Charm For Paris
all of the duties and decisions, but has developed more confidence in her own ear, tastes and intuition. Of course, her schooling also equipped her with more of the knowledge she needed.
“I was super inspired by my fellow peers such as Selina, Elijah, Brent Gallant, Lee Campese, Etienne Girard—all these people that are really good friends and super talented—and they all went to Selkirk’s music program,” Pick says. “I was going through a transitional period and I knew I wanted to pursue music in a more professional way. I signed up and I got in, and it was pretty awesome.”
Pick completed one year of Selkirk’s two-year music program, citing financial constraints as her main reason for not returning, but her year of education proved to be invaluable in building on her skills and making professional connections.
“You learn a little bit of everything, like sight-reading, ear training, music theory,” she says. “Then you end up having to play in all these ensembles where you have to play with different people of different skill levels, and the whole thing just kicks your ass. It was amazing.”
Though Pick opted to stay in B.C. after her schooling, finding communities of musicians and music lovers in abundance, she still spends as much time as she can in the Yukon and plans to perform in Whitehorse in the new year, to celebrate her album release.
“I haven’t been living in the Yukon for quite a while now,” Pick says. “I’m a B.C.-based artist, but an honourary Yukoner now.”
Pick may not say it herself, but her mark on the Yukon’s music scene is still ever-present. She credits her stint as the associate producer for Arts in the Park and her participation in BreakOut West, in 2019, with cementing her scene as a member of the artistic community up north. One memory Pick looks back on fondly in the territory is her DIY festival Greasefest, which she ran annually until moving away.
“I really wanted to host something that could provide a fun platform for all my friends to have
a good time and go watch each other and connect,” she says.
“Sometimes having a change of landscape to express yourself, which in this case was a greasy backyard, is cool.”
Though Pick moved away years ago, she still keeps up with her old friends in the Yukon and hopes to see more in-person support for the arts coming back, as venues often struggle to stay open. She laments
the closure of the Local (or the 202) and urges people to go out and see live music at Lefty’s Well and the newly revamped Kopper King.
“Go out to the venues that exist currently and make sure they’re supported so they don’t go under,” Pick says. “Even in the last year, the KK started doing live music and put all this work into reopening the other side, and it hasn’t been full-tilt yet, even though it has quite a bit of space.”
Because Pick has roots in several different towns, she wants to give each of her special places a celebration show for the new album. She kicked off the string of exclusive shows in November in Grand Forks, B.C., and will be hosting another in Nelson, in January. After that, her sights are set on Whitehorse, where she hopes
to play a third-release celebration concert. Though she’s spent much of her life as a nationally-touring artist, Pick prefers to focus on one or two provinces at a time now.
“It’s so expensive and it’s really hard to do that much travelling in such a big country,” she says. “I’m trying to get one province at a time and really go to all the different towns in that province, introduce myself and get them to know me.”
To keep up with Paris Pick, visit parispickandthepricks.com, listen to Third Time’s A Charm and order a physical copy. Make sure you look out for vinyls in the local shops, too, as they will be available in the new year. ■

CREATING COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS TAILS AT HOME
Julie is a registered veterinary technologist (RVT) providing veterinary nursing care to pets at home. Many services require an up-to-date exam with diagnosis, prescriptions and/or a treatment plan from a veterinarian.
Nyx and Sydney
Lately, I have been thinking about community and the part that animals play in bringing us together. As a registered veterinary technologist (RVT) whose professional role includes supporting the human-animal bond, I am rarely surprised by the connections created during athome appointments. Conversely, I am often startled to discover that same level of connection when I am out and about on Whitehorse city streets.
A recent interaction with a client
to me are that this may be causing pain to the animal, along with their human’s worry about making a mistake (or even having a fear of needles themselves).
As simple as it may seem on the surface, mastering this skill takes time and practice. When I teach people to give injections to animals, I keep those underlying concerns in mind and I maintain a slow pace, with an opportunity for questions and some time to support whichever way a person learns best.
Sydney and I had a great oneon-one teaching session at home
reminded me of interconnectedness. It seems animals can be a cord threading humans together. When I met Nyx, she was newly diagnosed with arthritis and the vet had prescribed a medication that is administered by subcutaneous (under the skin or SQ) injection. Initially, Nyx would get an injection once per week, tapering to once per month for maintenance. Her human, Sydney, had previously never given an injection and was keen to keep Nyx at home for these frequent treatments. They requested a homecare visit for the first dose, with the goal of learning this skill themselves. While a subcutaneous injection is not technically difficult, it can feel unnerving to use a sharp needle on a pet. Concerns expressed
where Nyx and Sydney could both be comfortable, with few distractions. Before we went “live” with Nyx’s injection, and in order to build knowledge and confidence, Sydney practised the technique on a demonstration toy lion. Using a lion stuffie could feel silly when adults are attempting to learn. In actuality, this low-risk scenario took any pressure off of “having to get it right” in this situation and added levity in imagining Nyx as a “house lion.” And it allowed Sydney to focus on feeling successful as they learned.
As we wrapped up, Sydney intended to continue on their own but was not entirely certain if they would feel confident giving Nyx’s dose the following week.
I met Nyx and Sydney, in this short
yet impactful way, several months ago.
Intermittently, as seasons change, I have wondered how things were going for them. While out in Whitehorse last week, I randomly ran into Sydney and requested an update. With delight in my heart, I listened to Sydney recount their success in confidently providing Nyx with her medication needs after our teaching session.
Sydney shared more details: not only were injections going well,
but they had also observed mobility changes in Nyx. She had been displaying normal cat behaviour: stalking, jumping, and pouncing; and leaping onto her windowside cat stand to watch birds outside.
These were all things she had not done in a long time. To Sydney’s observation, while Nyx’s mobility was not at her pre-arthritis level, she had definitely improved since starting this medication.
As they spoke, painting a picture with these stories, a stunning
smile unfurled on Sydney’s face. I watched awareness settle in as Sydney put the pieces together. A direct link existed between Nyx’s improved mobility, the medication itself and Sydney’s ability to learn a new skill: Sydney had become an active component in Nyx’s health, and Nyx’s improvement was the result.
The value of providing something to a pet that seems so simple, such as a subcutaneous injection, could easily go unrecognized. Beyond health implications, that simple thing carried the power to deepen the bond between human and animal. I felt honoured to be present in the moment when Sydney realized this implicit value as well.
Witnessing this self-recognition brought a smile of joy to my face and we celebrated a connection in that moment that we may not have otherwise had, thanks to Nyx. Stories such as that of Nyx and Sydney’s follow me after appointments and create connections in ways and places I am not always anticipating. For me, this story highlights how animals resonate with humans: they are one thread that weaves us into community.
As this example illustrates, becoming an active participant in our pets’ healthcare, in the way that is best available to us, can be rewarding and can give us a source of pride as well as serve to strengthen the human-animal bond.
Recognizing these bonds amongst each other can, in turn, lead to building community that is rich, with a shared understanding of the important ways that animals hold space for humans.

ABISON LESSONS GATHER
few weeks ago, we were invited out to supper at our friends’ place on a quiet road off the North Klondike highway. Our hostess met us in the driveway sporting a pair of wellworn gloves, holding a knife in one of them.
“Go right in, I’ll be with you in a sec,” she said.
“But what are you up to?”
“I’m just trying to clean a bison hide. I’m going to tan it.”
Inside, our host was moving calmly through the kitchen, draining potatoes, rolling out pastry for the berry pie, stirring a pot of bison stew on the stove—all the last-minute prep you hope to have done before everyone arrives. He greeted us with a huge smile, no sign of stress. I marvelled and took note.
This is how you do it when you’re having people over. Just chill. Clean the bison hide, do the prep. Talk to the guests while you chop. Direct them to the saffronscented roasted nuts on the table, made by a chef friend from Victoria; offer the delicious, chewy, meaty bison jerky you’ve just made. When they’re ready, serve the bison marrow bones you’ve roasted for 20 minutes at 450F, with a sprinkling of marinated parsley on the side.
Call the charming children to the table, pour the wine and celebrate the harvest (just last week) of a fine bison that the whole family helped to process. When your guests leave, send them away with marrow bones, stewing meat, ground bison, ribs, and treats for the dog.
Lesson learned, I tackled a Bison Bourguignon, partly because you can make it a day ahead of the party—a golden tactic for the stress-bunny host.
I followed Julia Child’s recipe, but not exactly—we didn’t have bacon, I forgot the tomato paste (didn’t matter) and I used lamb stock because that’s all we had in the freezer.
Here’s a tip: The usual method is to cook the tiny onions and the mushrooms, while the stew is in the oven, and stir them in later.
I flipped that on its head and roasted both mushrooms and onions in the oven first, because I could deal with the meat while they were cooking. Plus, the oven would be hot and ready for the stew.
Another tip: It’s hard to find tiny onions, fresh or canned, in the Yukon. So just use shallots instead.
A final tip (newly re-learned by me): The guests are here to eat great food, but they’re mostly here to see you. Sit them at the counter with a glass of wine, and chat while you chop. Better yet, give them a job to do. They’ll feel like part of the family.
Bison Bourguignon
INGREDIENTS
• 1 lb Cremini mushrooms, cleaned, trimmed and quartered
• 10 or 12 small shallots, peeled and sliced in half
• 4 Tbsp olive oil, divided
• 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt, divided
• 2 lbs bison stew meat
• 2 tsp dried rosemary
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 2 to 3 Tbsp flour
• 2 Tbsp butter
• 1/2 large onion, chopped
• 1 large carrot, peeled, quartered and chopped
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 cups red wine
• 2 cups bison or other strong stock
METHOD
1. Preheat oven to 375F and line
two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, toss mushrooms with 2 Tbsp olive oil and 1/2 tsp salt. Spread in a single layer on one of the baking sheets. In the same bowl, toss the shallots with a bit more olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Spread out on the second baking sheet.
2. Put mushrooms and shallots in the oven. Roast the mushrooms for 15 minutes, remove them from the oven and pour off the liquid into a small bowl. Return the mushrooms to the oven and cook for another 15 to 20 minutes, until they are browned and tender. Keep an eye on the shallots and remove them when browned and tender, about 35 minutes. Remove mushrooms and onions from the oven, transfer to a bowl and reserve. Reduce the oven temperature to 325F.
3. While the onions and mush-
rooms are cooking, prepare the meat. Remove any silver skin or gristle from the bison stew meat and cut it into uniform pieces. In a large bowl, toss the meat with rosemary, pepper and the remaining salt. Add the flour and toss again, making sure every piece is lightly coated.
4. Heat butter and remaining oil in an oven-proof casserole, with a lid, over medium heat. Once butter is sizzling, brown the meat in batches, being careful, as Julia Child would say, not to crowd the pan. Transfer each batch to a bowl as it’s done.
5. Add the mushroom juice and a little stock or red wine to the pan and scrape up the caramelized bits of meat with a wooden spoon. Stir in the onions and carrots. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, until vegetables are softened. Add the garlic.
6. Return the meat to the pan.
Stir in the red wine and stock in stages, until the meat is just covered, keeping any extra handy. Cover, and when the stew is bubbling, transfer to the oven. Cook for 90 minutes, remove from oven and stir in the reserved mushrooms and shallots. Add more stock and/or wine until all the ingredients are covered and the liquid is velvety.
7. Return to the oven and cook for another 20 to 30 minutes, until mushrooms and onion are heated through, the meat is tender and the stew is dark and rich. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt as necessary.
8. Serve on buttered egg noodles tossed with parsley, or buttered, boiled potatoes. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to one week. Makes about 8 cups, or 6 to 8 servings. ■

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive.
SMALL TREASURES FOR CHRISTMAS
Yukon Artists
@ Work will be presenting Small Treasures, a collection of tiny items designed to be given as gifts
This holiday season at the Yukon Artists @ Work Gallery, it’s true that good things come in small packages. The artists in the collective have created a collection of small pieces, perfect to be given as gifts, that are being carefully selected by curator Pat Bragg for an exhibit titled Small Treasures
Each December, Yukon Artists @ Work presents a Christmasthemed show featuring art from the co-op group’s members, and this year, the board wanted to try something different amidst the flurry of Christmas craft fairs taking place throughout the season.
“We called it Small Treasures because we wanted to encourage our artists to go small rather than some of the bigger pieces that some of us love to do,” says Bragg. “Because it is a time of gift-giving and because it is a time when people are travelling and packing things in their suitcases, we wanted to focus on small things but still have them be treasures.”
Every member of Yukon Artists @ Work will be contributing some pieces to the exhibit. Typically, shoppers must wait until the end of an exhibition to take home the pieces they have purchased, but in this particular show, people will be able to take home their treasures right away. This will free up space for other pieces, as stock will rotate throughout the exhibit’s month-long run, meaning that people can come in several times
to see the different pieces in the ever-changing collection. Most pieces in the exhibit will be priced under $200.
“It’s kind of like a pirate’s treasure cove, so we’re going to decorate it along that theme and it will be a fun place to come to just to enjoy the small pieces of art of many kinds,” Bragg says. “We’ll have glasswork, we’ll have jewelry, we’ll have small paintings, we’ll have small photographs, we’ll have small pieces of fibre art and wearable art. There will really be something for everybody.” Bragg later notes that she forgot to mention pottery, which will also be available.
Bragg is thankful to have had the support of some other experienced curators on the board, as this is her first time curating an exhibit. Her main prerogative was making sure the pieces that artists submitted fit into the treasure theme, both in terms of size and aesthetic.
“It could be modern art,” she says, “but it will fit the theme if it is on the small side, if it is glittery—we love that—and if it is something that might appear in a treasure chest.”
Small Treasures opens Dec. 5 and runs through the month.
On its first night, art lovers can take part in the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m., which coincides with First Friday, a monthly selfdirected art crawl. The Yukon Artists @ Work Gallery is one of three downtown Whitehorse art galleries that take part in the crawl, along with Arts Underground and Northern Cultural Expressions Society.
“In this show, we are looking at things that are more-modestly priced, so people who are not in a place in their life to afford a twothousand-dollar piece of art but [who] might want a small print or something that is twenty dollars, still have an original piece of art to add to the quality of their life,” Bragg says.
The YA@W collective will launch its Christmas exhibit titled
Dec. 5 until the end of the month, at its gallery space located at 4129-4th Ave.,
“Most of us started out collecting art that way. Every piece in our gallery is original art, and aside from the number of prints,
they are one of a kind. It’s different from shopping on Amazon where you’re going to see the same thing everywhere.”

A PROPER DAWSON SEND-OFF
Krista Foss, a Berton House writer-in-residence, treated locals to her presentation— The Outsider’s Guide to Being a Better Outsider before bidding them farewell
Writers-in-residence at Berton House have only two responsibilities, aside from being inspired by the place. They are to do public readings in both Dawson City and Whitehorse at some point during the residency.
Author Krista Foss fulfilled that obligation in Dawson on Nov. 13, the evening before her departure.
The event was organized by Dätla Zho (the Dawson Community Library) and attended by about a dozen folks, most of whom Foss had gotten to know during her stay.
Foss was introduced by the acting librarian, Gaby Sgaga.
“She’s a novelist, essayist and a short-story writer; an avid lake swimmer, lazy gardener and a caffeine enthusiast. Her short fiction has appeared in several literary journals, including Granta, and has twice been a finalist for the Journey Prize. Her essay writing has been featured in Best Canadian Essays, nominated for a national magazine award and received a prize in the PRISM International Creative Non-Fiction Contest.
“She’s published two novels: Smoke River in 2014, and Half Life in 2021, both with McClelland & Stewart. Born and raised in Hamilton, she now lives in a small village north of Kingston, with less than half of Dawson’s population.”
Foss offered several options during her slightly more than an hour-long presentation, beginning with what she called an Outsider’s Guide to Being a Better Outsider, in Dawson, by an outsider.”
THE 12 POINTS
1. Not taking bear-warning signs too seriously, but being cautious and hopeful
2. Being a bit eccentric, as are some of the locals
3. Enjoying the variety of displays and the shades of the day
4. Watching some sports events (Blue Jays?), with locals in a bar
5. Savouring the Hän words on many of the buildings and signs. And saying them aloud
6. Being open to change: when your agent says the project you came here to write isn’t working, find another story
7. Going berry picking and enjoying the scenery
8. Accepting the sight of odd gear (boxer shorts?) at a pickleball game
9. Saying yes to all of the epic adventures
10. Listening to others’ stories instead of telling yours
11. Embracing the ordinary, even if it’s not your ordinary
12. Telling people how you were changed by this place, before you leave
In-between readings she reversed the usual order of events by asking the audience questions: What’s the best dog’s name in town? What song reminds you of Dawson? What’s the hardest part of Dawson in the winter? What’s the best wild game you’ve ever tasted?
That new story idea she had to come up with involves the tale of a man named Aubrey, an artist who moves back to Dawson after many years living in Montreal, when he falls on hard times back there, and ends up living in

a cabin in West Dawson. She read a scene between Aubrey and his sister, who has decided to leave town so that he can use the cabin.
She’s not sure exactly how this story is going to turn out, but in the weeks since she started it, she’s written 50,000 words of a first draft, and it seems to be going well. Just 10 or 11 drafts to go.
Foss concluded her reading with a short passage from her second novel, Half Life, at the
point when a young woman who really wanted to be a theoretical physicist learned that she was probably better suited to becoming a high-school physics teacher.
There was a lively discussion about writing techniques, and she outlined the process that she had used in figuring out how to juggle the 12 character viewpoints in her first novel, which she eventually found she had to diagram on a wall chart. She has subsequently avoided having to deal with that
many plot threads and character studies in the same book.
That novel, Smoke River, was influenced by her time as a journalist and dealt with tensions created over land use between First Nations and Settler populations sharing a region.
The formal part of the evening ended with Krista Foss giving away several copies of that novel, which she said she just didn’t have room for in her suitcase anymore. ■
