YUKON ARTS CENTRE

Amy Kenny lives in Whitehorse. If she’s not inside writing, she’s outside running mountains.

UNTOLD STORYTELLING When Brianne Bremner got the email from the Yukon AntiPoverty Coalition (YAPC) asking for her company, GBP Creative, to shoot a portrait series, she didn’t hesitate

“T

his is one of those jobs where, as soon as we got the email, without looking at the schedule, we were like ‘yep, we will make it work,’” said Brianne, GBP’s creative director. That’s because the series was aimed at highlighting the untold experiences of seven Yukoners, each of whom had a story to tell— about the stigma around social assistance, what it’s like living in precarious housing, attending youth detention, managing posttraumatic stress, and more. “It’s absolutely just something we believe in,” said Brianne of herself and her husband and GBP photographer, Gary Bremner. “Anytime we can help share the stories of people who have experienced things like homelessness or poverty or food insecurity or all these things. Anytime we can give voice to that and let the general population know what others are dealing with, we think that’s really important.” The funding for the project came through the Yukon 125 Fund, which was given out this year to applicants whose projects “commemorate the anniversary of the Yukon becoming a territory, and honour Yukon’s communities, heritage and culture,” according to the Yukon government website: yukon.ca/125. Keitha Clark is the project coordinator with YAPC. She said YAPC applied to the fund to ensure stories were being told that might not otherwise have been reflected in the Yukon 125 celebrations. “We wanted to encourage a diverse range of experiences and perspectives to highlight and think about as you reflect on the

Jason

last 125 years, and look forward to what we want the Yukon to be for the next 125,” she said. The images, which are part of an exhibition opening at the Yukon Arts Centre on October 6, show their subjects smiling. Looking strong. That was important, said Brianne. “Especially with projects like this, when you’re dealing with potentially heavy material, it’s almost like the photo becomes a bit of a celebration for them,” said

PHOTOS: GBP Creative Brianne. “We didn’t want these photos to be sad or dreary … we want the photos to represent their resilience and their beauty.” Clark said they achieved this by approaching the series collaboratively. It wasn’t about YAPC and GBP collecting stories and photos and putting them out to the public. Everyone photographed was involved throughout the process. Gary and Brianne met with each cont’d on page 3 ...

Untold Storytelling ... cont’d from page 2 person and just chatted for an hour before Gary got out his camera. Collaborators were able to look at the photos as Gary took them. One lady wanted to be photographed in shadow because, though she wanted to participate, she still felt there was stigma around her experience of social assistance. It was a balance, Gary said, of understanding that everyone wanted to share, and also respecting where they were at in

terms of comfort levels around how they shared. His goal is always to empower people through their portraits, but he wanted to do that with their input. “Everybody reviewed their stories before going out and made edits, if needed, and changes as well,” said Clark. “And they’re very strong and powerful, but they’re strong and powerful because they’re personal. We wanted to make sure that everybody felt comfortable with the stories

that were being told, and knew fully how those stories are going to be out in the community.” Together, they tell what it’s like to be a new immigrant in Canada, looking for affordable housing when you’re making minimum wage; to be from a First Nation and having to live in a wall tent because you can’t find a place to live on your own traditional territory; of struggling toward sobriety; of establishing an Accessibility Olympics after a car crash that

changed your life. “We just want people to feel good about it in the end,” said Gary. “You’re talking about some really difficult stuff, but at least if you can get a photo that you’re proud of. It gives you that extra bit of energy to face that. It’s like the armour to kind of go out into the world.” The exhibit runs October 6 to November 18, Monday to Friday (10 a.m.–5 p.m.). n

Actually, the summons was for my wife to appear for jury selection

A

nd it’s her second time. The first time, the selection was for a trial that would begin on our 50th anniversary. Quite appropriately, she got excused for that one. There’s a possibility that she could be excused for this one, too, because of her age. I believe that’s an option available to her. But what about elders’ wisdom? Not that I would have willingly gone to court on our anniversary, but I’ve always been interested in

how a jury trial works in Canada. We get so much crap about trials in other countries, fiction and otherwise. Perry Mason was big when I was a kid. I’ve been a witness in a trial by judge, and I’ve observed a trial of a friend, also by judge, from the gallery. Is it called a gallery, or is that more Perry Mason stuff? I’ve been a member of a quasijudicial board, even the chairperson for a few years. I’ve also been a member of the Whitehorse Diversion Committee, giving firsttime young offenders an alternative to the court system. Yet, in my whole life, I have never had a jury summons. So why don’t we ever pick me? I’ve always been willing to sit in judgment of my peers.

Now I’m way over 65 and my hearing is shot (see CHS Syndrome). I could ask to be excused for the first, and I’d probably have to be excused for the second. What? They mumble? Nobody on Perry Mason ever mumbled. Just speak up, dammit! Incidentally, what’s the mandatory retirement age for judges? Jury selection was today, and my wife was not selected. She was very much interested and did not choose the out option that was available to her (being over 65). Irony of all ironies, our son got a notice today to appear for jury duty. I pay taxes. I’m on the voters’ list. I filled out the census form. I’m so hurt. n

CULTURE: Yukon’s Best Friend Bosco Bosco, an eight-year-old yellow lab, is none the worse for wear after a two-day drive from Whitehorse to Edmonton to visit family. The Best Things in Life are… Rescued! Meet Lea!

Meet Edward!

She’s a 2-year-old Pitbull.

He’s an 8-month-old Canadian Inuit dog.

Lea is a sweet loving girl who just wants cuddles and kisses. She is very much a couch potato but also has lots of energy for a walk. She loves puppies but has shown some reactivity to small dogs and cats. Thankfully all she wants is to please you so she responds well when you tell her no. She would be fine with kids, but will need to be taught not to jump up for kisses.

Edward loves his treats, he is highly food-motivated. He is playful and loves it when you throw things for him, he doesn’t bring them back, but he still loves it. He loves playing with kids. He would be good with other dogs if introduced properly. He’s smart but only knows how to sit at this point. He’s a big floppy baby and loves to be cuddled.

If you are interested in adopting Lea or Edward please fill out an online application at humanesocietyyukon.ca. If you already have a preapproved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards them. Note: Please submit only 1 application, noting your first choice. JUMP-START YOUR CREATIVITY THIS FALL The buzz of summer is over, and the days are getting shorter

A

ll of a sudden, it seems, we have so many extra hours of darkness to fill. Fall is the perfect time of year to channel your energy into a new hobby, tap into your imagination and connect with your inner artist. Here are a few ideas to help rekindle your creative drive, no matter where your passions lie.

Writing

Did you know that there exists a term in Japanese for the phenomenon of acquiring reading materials but letting them pile up without reading them? Tsundoku ( ) is the Japanese word for the stack of books you’ve purchased but haven’t yet read. I’m guilty of this all year-round but especially during the summer when I tell myself that once the days start getting shorter again, I’ll be able to start making a dent in my ever-growing collection of unread books. I wonder if a word also exists for the accumulation of dreams and goals that you have the intention of following through on but never get around to completing. As a lifelong lover of books, I have often dreamt about writing one of my own. Ideas have come and gone over the years, and first pages have been written, but never have I been able to complete an entire book from the first page to the last. In 1999, a freelance writer by the name of Chris Baty started a project called National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in which participants attempted to write a 50,000-word manuscript during the course of a month. That first year, 21 people in the San

Francisco Bay Area accepted the challenge; by 2022, over 400,000 people from all over the world committed themselves to trying to write approximately 1,667 words each day between November 1 and November 30. There are no prizes if you reach your goal—just the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve completed the first draft of a novel (which to me sounds like the best prize of all for an aspiring writer). There’s no guarantee that the finished project will be brilliant, but it will certainly improve your writing skills and help you get motivated to focus and to dedicate more time to your writing. If you love to write but a novel sounds too daunting or there’s simply no extra time in your day, why not write a haiku a day, for a month? Or maybe sign up for You’re a Poet and Deep Down You Know It: A Beginner Poetry Workshop, a free in-person workshop with Yukon poet Joanna Lilley on Saturday, October 28, from 4–6 p.m. at the Whitehorse Public Library. To register, or if you have queries, send Joanna a direct message or email her at jo.lilley@rocketmail. com. The workshop is supported by the League of Canadian Poets and is “for anyone who’d like to find out more about poetry, pick up some writing tips and try some on-the-spot writing. It’s especially geared to beginners and we’ll spend some time outdoors by the Yukon River connecting with the world around us to get the creative juices going. All you need to bring is something to write on.”

Filmmaking

Maybe your creative aspirations are more cinematic and you’ve always dreamt of making a movie. In that case, the annual Yukon 48 Hour Film Challenge may be exactly the push you need to get going. Films are to be a maximum of five minutes long and may be of any genre. The compe-

great source of creative inspiration. The Blue Feather Music Festival is taking place on November 3-4 featuring performances from Nick Gilder & Sweeney Todd, Digging Roots, Sarah MacDougall, and others. Head to yukontickets.com/TheatreManager/1/ tmEvent/tmEvent2676.html to see if tickets are still available.

Add colour to your life with a new hobby or a creative outlet tition starts at 5:30 p.m. on October 20, at which time a “key” will be revealed that you will be required to incorporate into your short film (physically, verbally, etc.). Hand in or send in a link of your completed short by 5:30 p.m. on October 22 and your entry might be chosen as a winner and screened at the 2024 Dawson City International Short Film Festival and the 2024 Available Light Film Festival. For more information and to register, go to yukonfilmsociety.com/schedule/2023-yukon48-hour-film-challenge. Enjoying Music

Social activities inevitably tend to decrease in the North at this time of year. It’s just easier to stay at home sometimes instead of cleaning off the icy windshield of your car, bundling up in several layers of warm clothes and heading out in the darkness. Humans are social creatures, however, whether we like to admit it or not, and the isolation in the cold months of the year can take its toll. Many creative activities, such as writing, painting, knitting and woodworking, are solitary pursuits and act as yet another excuse to not get out of the house. Music can be made alone, too, but often is so much better when created with and enjoyed with others. I love watching videos and livestreams of the Toronto-based musical choir, Choir! Choir! Choir! Founded over 12 years ago by Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman, as a weekly drop-in singing event, it’s become incredibly popular; and the two of them travel around the world, now, sharing their enthusiasm and love for music with audiences (who then become the choir). Maybe someday they’ll come to the Yukon (they have a couple of shows in Alaska next month), but in the meantime, I urge you to check out any of their numerous videos on YouTube and to pay special attention to the expressions on the faces of the audience/choir. Music (like all things creative) has a way of making us feel alive, of lighting up parts of us that we’ve forgotten about, and of reminding us of what it means to be human. Maybe you love to sing in the shower and have wondered what it would feel like to join your voice together with the voices of others. Maybe you used to sing as a child, but life convinced you to silence your voice since then. Why not get together with some friends and make some music? Maybe start your own choir or reach out to existing ones like the Whitehorse Community Choir and the Whitehorse Pop Choir, to see when they’ll be accepting new members. Hearing live music is also a

Creativity can also blossom in the kitchen. Maybe you take pleasure in exploring and trying out new recipes and sharing the results with friends and family? Or perhaps you’ve always wished to be more culinarily capable but fear that you’re destined to order take-out for the rest of your life? Why not dig out your favourite cookbook or tune in to a cooking show for a boost of encouragement and let your inner chef come out to play. I’m currently enjoying Big Sky Kitchen with Eduardo Garcia, and Erin French’s The Lost Kitchen—but there are countless food and cooking shows available to draw inspiration from on TV, as well as on various streaming platforms. If you’d like to take your cooking to the next level in a more in-person, local way, why not reach out to the Yukon’s own Well Bread Cooking School? They are currently offering in-home lessons as well as classes for groups of people (six or more) who all know each other. Check out their website, wellbread. ca/. You can also look them up on Facebook or send them an email at chef@wellbread.ca.

GATHER

Miche Genest is a Whitehorse-based chef and writer. She is also somewhat of a gardener. Miche has also written two books: The Boreal Feast: A Culinary Journey Through The North and The Boreal Gourmet: Adventures In Northern Cooking.

MOOSE SEASON PHOTO: Miche Genest

The hunters are returning, the leaves have gone and there’s snow in them hills —it’s the season for big pots of stock simmering on the stove, filling the house with warm, delicious smells. And then, once the stock is ready, don’t you just crave a classic moose stew? Or moose bourguignon, or goulash, or French onion soup—at this time of year, we cooks say, “Hunters, bring back those bones!” MOOSE STOCK Ingredients: • 5 lbs moose bones • 6 quarts water • 1 pint red wine or pure apple juice • 1 large onion, cut into eighths • 2 large carrots, cut into quarters • 2 stalks celery, with leaves, cut in half • 5 bay leaves • 10 black peppercorns • 10 juniper berries, squashed to release flavour • 1 star anise pod • 1 Tbsp dried thyme • 1 Tbsp dried rosemary Preparation: 1. Saw bones into pieces, as necessary, to fit your largest stock pot. Soak bones in cold water for 15 minutes, to remove impurities. 2. Preheat oven to 400 F. Remove bones from pot, pat dry and arrange on a large baking tray and roast until browned, about 20 minutes. Add bones to the stock pot and pour in water—bones should be covered by at least 1 inch. 3. Cover pot and turn burner to high heat. The water will take a while to boil. 4. On the same pan you used to roast meat, arrange vegetable pieces. Toss to coat with any fat left in the pan. 5. Roast until just browned, about 20 minutes. Set aside. 6. Keep an eye on the pot of bones and skim off any scum that rises to the surface—as the water nears boiling, the scum will rise more rapidly. Keep skimming until you’ve removed as much as possible. 7. Once the water is boiling and the liquid is as clear as you

Moose Stew can get it (don’t sweat it too much), add the vegetables and all the seasonings. Bring to a boil once more and reduce heat to medium-low. 8. Remove the cover. Simmer the pot for 8 hours (a wood stove is ideal for this task) until the stock has reduced by about 4 inches. *The aim is to have as slow a simmer as possible: that is, one large bubble just barely breaking the surface. 9. Once stock is done, remove bones with a pair of tongs and place in a bowl. This will make pouring the stock through a strainer easier. (My dog loves the scraps of meat t h a t come off the bones, with the fat removed. He would love the fat, too, but he is denied that treat for his own health, though he is not in agreement.) 10. Pour stock through a strainer into several large bowls, to cool as rapidly as possible. (I put mine on the porch with a screen overtop.) 11. Once stock has cooled, skim

off fat—save it if you think you will use it, or discard in the compost. Pour stock into containers with lids and freeze. Use in soups, stews, gravies, sauces, or just enjoy it on its own. Makes about 6 quarts. CLASSIC MOOSE STEW Ingredients: • 3 lbs moose stew meat, cleaned of gristle and silver skin, cut into 1-inch pieces • 2 tsp rosemary • 2 tsp tarragon • 1 tsp kosher salt • 1 tsp black pepper • 4 Tbsp flour • 1 Tbsp finely ground espresso • 2 Tbsp olive oil (more as necessary) • 2 Tbsp butter (more as necessary) • 1 large onion • 3 cloves garlic • 4 medium tomatoes • 4 cups moose stock • 2 cups red wine or 1 3/4 cups

pure apple juice and 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar Vegetables (to be added for last 45 minutes of cooking) • 3 medium carrots • 3 stalks celery • 4 medium potatoes • 2 Tbsp butter • 2 Tbsp flour • 1/2 cup red wine or pure apple juice Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 300 F. Toss moose meat chunks with herbs and salt and pepper, using your hands to massage seasonings into meat. Whisk flour and espresso together, sprinkle overtop of the meat and toss again to thoroughly combine. 2. Heat olive oil and butter in a large ovenproof casserole over medium heat. Once oil is shimmering, sauté meat in batches, turning once or twice so that it’s evenly browned. As each batch is finished, remove to a bowl and reserve.

3. Once all the meat is cooked, add onion to the same pot and add more oil and butter if needed. Add a splash of red wine and stir to loosen any browned bits stuck to the pan. 4. Sauté until onions are soft and translucent, about 7 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another 2 minutes. 5. Return the meat to the pot, add stock and red wine and stir thoroughly to combine. 6. Cover and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, transfer the pot to the oven and cook for 2 1/2 hours. 7. While meat is cooking, prepare vegetables. Chop carrots, celery and potatoes into chunks about the same size as the meat. Heat oil and butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add all the vegetables to the pan and cook for about 5 minutes, just enough to soften the edges. 8. Sprinkle flour overtop and stir to combine. Add red wine and stir—the liquid will thicken right away. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent sticking. Remove pan from heat. 9. Once meat has cooked for 2 1/2 hours, bring pot out of the oven, uncover and stir in the vegetables, getting right to the bottom of the pot to distribute evenly. 10. Cover and return the pot to the oven. Cook for another 45 minutes until potatoes are tender. Taste and add more salt and pepper as necessary. If the sauce needs a little brightening, stir in a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Serve at once with some hearty sourdough bread, pasta or polenta. Makes about 2 quarts. n

gg rolls may seem like a lot of work, but you’ll be impressed with what a big

difference making your own can make in the final product. Feel free to add some meat to the mix, if you’d like, but these simple cabbage and ginger egg rolls are so simple and tasty that you won’t miss it. Makes 10–15 egg rolls.

Ingredients: ❑ 4 cups thinly sliced cabbage ❑ 1 large carrot, grated ❑ 1 Tbsp grated ginger ❑ 2 Tbsp soy sauce ❑ 1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil ❑ 1 package egg roll wrapper ❑ 1 egg, beaten ❑ 1–2 cups vegetable or canola oil, for frying

Cabbage and Ginger Egg Rolls

Instructions: 1. In a large bowl, mix together cabbage, carrot, ginger, soy sauce and sesame oil, until evenly combined. Place 1 heaping tablespoon of the filling in the center of a wrapper, brush the edges of the wrapper with an egg, then bring the corners to the center and roll the wrapper around the filling. Once rolled, pinch each end to seal. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers. 2. Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat. When oil reaches 350 F, fry the egg rolls until golden brown. Work in batches, so as not to overcrowd the pan. Repeat with remaining egg rolls and serve with plum sauce. n

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON OF SUMMER MUSIC OUTDOORS A summer’s worth of free noon-hour concerts at the Front Street Gazebo has come to an end for the third year in a row

T

his year, the fun began in early June and concluded on August 25 with Gordie Tentrees. His performance was the only one forced indoors by weather this year, but he didn’t mind as it gave him the chance to enjoy the acoustics of the Palace Grand Theatre. Two summers back, inclement weather forced him to entertain from the sheltered space in front of the CFYT 106.9 FM home base on Queen Street, with his audience on the boardwalk, so

this was a much better deal. The gazebo faces a natural area for an audience to sit, either on the log rim that defines the space or on the slight hillside that leads up to the garden space where there are some benches as well. With the sound system active, the music is loud enough to attract people from across Front Street or just down the block. If the audience starts out small, it has generally grown substantially by halfway through the set.

Nominations are now open for

the Order of Yukon, the Commissioner’s Bravery Award, and the Commissioner’s Public Service Volunteer Award.

People who were too busy to come in person were able to tune in to a broadcast version on CFYT FM. The radio station was one of the sponsors, along with the Klondike Visitors Association, the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture, the Yukon 125 Fund, the City of Dawson, and Parks Canada. Guest artists included local performers, as well as folks from out of town. It was not unusual for those to have side gigs at Bombay Peggy’s, the Westminster Hotel, the Midnight Sun Hotel and even full concerts in the KIAC (Klondike Institute of Art and Culture) Ballroom, the next evening. The gazebo was not the only site for outdoor music. There were several concerts at the outdoor stage by the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Community Hall during the 25th Anniversary of Tr’ondëk

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE YUKON LITERACY COALITION?

The YLC turned a dark, windowless storage room into a space for families to play and learn together

The Yukon Literacy Coalition has announced that its space at the Canada Games Centre (the Family Literacy Centre) will no longer be available to us as of November 10, 2023

he Yukon Literacy Coalition (YLC)’s team was sad to break the news that after more than a decade of providing a safe space for all Yukon families to gather, learn and play at their Family Literacy Centre in the Can-

ada Games Centre (CGC), they were informed that the City of Whitehorse requires the space for staff offices. The Family Literacy Centre will no longer be available as of November 10. “We have lost a free, wonder-

ful, safe space for families to participate in our programming,” YLC project manager Carrie-Anne McPhee told What’s Up Yukon. “The organization now needs to find a cont’d on page 18 ...

Did You Know? Storing your out of season tires is important. Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread! Tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for long periods nor should they be stored hanging from the beads. The best practice when storing out of season tires is to keep them in a cool, dry, enclosed storage area and away from elements (i.e. water, ozone, etc.). They should be stored on the sidewall of the tire and stacked on each other or a flat surface to prevent indentations.

Try our easy Tire Storage Service to prevent damage to your tires.

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

HOW ARE THINGS UNDER THE HOOD OF YOUR CAR? Have you had a look under your hood, how are your fluid levels, what about your belts and hoses. Most owners manuals show you where to check fluids at, if you have to add any fluids make sure they are the ones for your car. The belts and hoses are sometimes a little harder to check, if you are unable to check them or have any questions, take your car to your mechanic so they can have a look at it for you.

What’s next for the Yukon Literacy Coalition? ... cont’d from page 13 gramming and support they had at the Canada Games Centre,” said McPhee. “Any way the community can help us find and sustain this new space would be wonderful. We are open to any ideas.” The Family Literacy space in the CGC is not being used right now as the team packs up to move out. “The Family Literacy Centre was one of our most valued programs, but the Yukon Literacy Coalition offers many programs that are continuing,” McPhee assured. “The loss of the Family Literacy Centre, we hope, is temporary and we will have a new centre soon. In the meantime, Family Literacy programs are being offered at the Pioneer Hotel in Shipyards Park and through community outreach.” The YLC will be hosting a fare-

well party at the Family Literacy Centre’s current space on November 4 and invites everyone who has used the space over the years to stop by. Details of the event will be posted on the YLC Facebook page when they are finalized. “We loved creating a beautiful space in a dark, windowless storage room,” said McPhee. “We have had so many families come through. In partnership with the City of Whitehorse, we had grand celebrations including many Family Literacy Day events. The Family Literacy Centre welcomed thousands of families every year. We are grateful to have been gifted such a beautiful space from the City of Whitehorse for so many years.” To learn more about the YLC, visit yukonliteracy.com. n

new location and space unexpectedly.” Before the space in the CGC was the Family Literacy Centre, it was an empty storage room, McPhee continued, recounting how Allen Murray, a former Yukon Literacy Coalition employee, discovered the space and saw its potential. “In partnership with the City of Whitehorse, we made it into a warm, welcoming Family Literacy Centre,” McPhee said. “We added plumbing, a wheelchair lift, and had local artists paint murals on the walls. We added a library and several learning stations. We are very sad to lose this space.” The Yukon Literacy Coalition is a society that is dedicated to lifelong learning for all Yukoners, offering programs and services to northerners of all ages, cultures and walks of life. In addition to their Family Literacy programs, the organization develops Skills

for Success and employment programs, as well as Financial Literacy for adults and youth. They also operate a Go for Literacy Bus that travels the Yukon, and they deliver Family Literacy programming at the Pioneer Hotel and the Learning Garden in Shipyards Park. “Our programs are free and accessible to all Yukoners,” said McPhee. “They are delivered using a non-formal approach meeting Yukoners where they are at. The Family Literacy Centre in the CGC was vital to Yukon families because it offered a free, safe space for families to come together to learn and play.” With this recent news, the YLC is looking for a new place to reopen the Family Literacy Centre and new partnerships. “Our intention is to create a new, safe space for families to enjoy the same pro-

TEAMWORK Team Eagle in the Yukon River Quest In early July, Victoria Gold was proud to represent in the 2023 Yukon River Quest with Team Eagle, which brought together eight Victoria Gold employees from various company departments to compete via canoe in this epic 715-kilometre paddle race on the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City. Post-race, the team agreed that the Yukon River Quest was one of the toughest, yet most rewarding experiences and that crossing the finish line would not have been possible without impeccable teamwork and support for one another as teammates. “We may not have been the fastest boat in the race, but we showed how the spirit of teamwork and collaboration can make anything achievable,” says Team Eagle representative Katie Chakhova and Victoria Gold Senior Regulatory Specialist. Race highlights included navigating Five Finger Rapids, crossing Lake Laberge, wildlife sightings along the route and that everyone was still smiling when reaching the finish line in Dawson City together. “We started the race as colleagues and ended it as friends,” continues Katie. “The friendships we forged along the way are the best part of working in a great team, whether that be at the Eagle Gold Mine or in a canoe. This race gave us a greater respect for the beauty of the Yukon and our shared responsibility for it.” “We are already making plans to return to the Yukon River Quest next year”. Adds Katie, “We are grateful to Victoria Gold for sponsoring our team to take on the Yukon River and can’t wait until next year’s race.”

Team Eagle in this year’s Yukon River Quest: Lucas Perron, Mine Engineer EIT; Ross Bagnell, Team Eagle Captain and Victoria Gold Coordinator, HLF Planning and Projects; Cascia Krolczyk, Human Resources Coordinator; Kyle Kirby, Operator 3-Blaster; Katie Chakhova, Senior Regulatory Specialist; Megan Gent, Mine EIT; Ben Widdowson, Environmental Coordinator; and, Aleisha Rocheleau, Mine Geologist. Team Eagle was supported by Victoria Gold’s Kelly Magnusson, Senior Administrative Coordinator and her partner Len Sloan.

The Eagle Gold Mine is situated within Victoria Gold’s 100 per cent-owned Dublin Gulch Property located approximately 375 kilometres north of Whitehorse and 85 kilometres north, northeast of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work.
