SPORT YUKON’S 2023 MAJOR AWARD WINNERS

Sport Yukon honoured the achievement of Yukon athletes, coaches and administrators at their annual Major Awards ceremony in May

Five awards were given out at the 2023 edition of Sport Yukon’s annual Major Awards ceremony, which took place May 31 at Sport Yukon. The Major Awards began in 1977 with a goal of recognizing exceptional achievements of Yukoners in sport across a number of categories.

The award for Administrator of the Year was given to Brenda Dion. Dion has been involved in various sports in the Yukon for over 20 years and has served on several sport boards such as Athletics Yukon, Canada Senior Games Association and the Yukon Pickleball Association. According to Sport Yukon, Dion has been a huge part of the growth of sport in communities throughout the Yukon and through the Pickleball Fundamentals program with the Canada Games Centre.

“Brenda’s enthusiasm for sport is infectious and inspirational, and her impact on our community can be measured in many ways: in building senior participation in sport, in promoting healthy active living, and in leading sport organizations and initiatives with compassion, vision, and fairness,” reads a release from the organization.

The award for Coach of the Year went to Geremy Newbury. Newbury has been involved with the Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association for its past five seasons, during which

he has served as a head or assistant coach to multiple teams. His various roles have included being Head Coach of the U13 Dairy Queen Mustangs A team.

“[Newbury] is known for creating a culture of respect and hard work, and his commitment extends to his dynamic practice plans, commitment to the development and mentorship of his athletes, and belief in leading by example— bringing a positive and constructive attitude both on and off the ice,” Sport Yukon said of the hockey coach.

The Dairy Queen U13 Mustangs

A team took home the gold at two tier 3 tournaments and came close

to winning gold in a tier 2 tournament.

Callum Weir won the award for National/Territorial Male Athlete of the Year. He competed in the Canada Summer Games as part of Sport Yukon’s Men’s Soccer Team and contributed to what the organization calls a “historymaking performance.”

Weir originally hails from Haines Junction, and as a goalkeeper, has represented the Yukon in both soccer and futsal, played with professional soccer clubs in Victoria as well as Germany and was named to Canada’s national Men’s Futsal Team. Following his performance at the Canada Summer Games, Weir was named to the Games’ Men’s Soccer AllStar Team.

“For all his success, Callum remains a modest and positive team

THE BUREAUCRACY OF DEATH

There’s a scene in the old movie Beetlejuice that depicts the afterlife as starting in an office—an office full of old filing cabinets, bored assistants, unhappy “clients” and long waiting lines. It’s meant to be funny, but somehow it strikes a little too close to home these days.

In our current society, death seems accompanied by an endless series of bureaucracies. Some of these work well, some work well together; and others … don’t. I recently had the honour of serving as executor of a small estate. I was backup to an 87-year-old who classified serving as a “piece of cake,” and then turned everything over to me.

The first bureaucracy in this case was the funeral home’s. The staff were very respectful of the grief associated with a death. There were a few hiccups, like sending the death certificates to the wrong person, issues with the payment system, and so on, but all were minor.

Although the funeral home, in this case, was down south, I have also found the local funeral home to be very helpful. The one thing the home down south gave me, which I hadn’t seen before, was a fabulous document from the B.C. government on all of the things that an executor needs to do with different bureaucracies. The document is 16 pages long and suggests priorities for action, from urgently cancelling a Visa card to eventually removing the deceased from the voters’ list. It’s

easily found on their website; just search “after a death checklist ”

After the dealings with the funeral home, I felt strangely on my own. It was a small estate and hiring a lawyer would have chewed up all of the funds. As a seasoned public servant, I believed it was easy to do it myself. I’m sure you can all hear the gong going, as I coul sdn’t have been more wrong.

With a certified will, death certificates, birth certificates, marriage certificates, signatures from beneficiaries—I thought I had everything I needed. I sort of did, but I also needed information on who decides when probate is needed (good luck with that one) and what the criteria is for needing probate.

I also needed (need!) mountains of patience. Every interaction eroded mine and took it out to some foreign sea of bureaucracy. I’ve never had a ton of patience to begin with (more like a small hill), so the erosion grew more and more painful.

I can’t begin to describe the process of trying to set up an estate account with the bank. I will say that my patience through that process was eroded sufficiently enough to establish a small island in the aforementioned sea. Then there were things like cancelling union dues and trying to get back the ones that had not been cancelled—another system of bureaucracy involving several sections (and still more erosion of my patience).

Getting the taxes done and paying what was owed was

relatively easy, until the final step of getting a clearance certificate. Canada Revenue Agency decided that being the second executor wasn’t sufficient and I needed a “letter of renunciation” from the first named executor. I mean, they have the money, the bank is happy, the CPP death benefit has been paid, pensions are settled— what on earth is the risk? There are times I think that the entire process of dealing with the bureaucracy of death is designed to drive ordinary people into the hands of lawyers, or else just leave the money unclaimed in the bank.

As you may be able to tell, through this experience of being an executor, my small hill of patience has now been eroded to an open-pit mine. Please don’t fall in! If you are doing it yourself, talk to friends who may have gone through being an executor, or to an accountant/bookkeeper used to dealing with estates. If you are older and don’t have a will, please make one. There are many simple ways to do it and it will save your family or friends hours. Check the internet or wander through the YG web-maze to look for information (try the “Public Trustee Learn About Wills and Estates” as a search question). The Yukon Public Legal Education Association (YPLEA) also has a helpful booklet at https://yplea.com/wills-andestates

And, whatever you do, don’t say “Beetlejuice” three times or you may end up in the waiting room, at the end of the line. ■

HUNTING THE HUNTERS

In the fall of 2015, three B.C. hunters decided to hunt in a seldom-used area of northern British Columbia, in a location where the Alaska Highway dips into northern B.C. from Morley Lake to Swift River.

Across Morley Lake is what remains of the Old Alaska Highway, now a mostly 4x4 trail. As that area is seldom, if ever, hunted, our moose hunters from Vancouver figured it would be a good area and decided to hunt around there. So, they set up their campsite in an old gravel pit and hunted the nearby area.

Early in the morning on their third day, they bagged a moose a short distance away from the campsite. While gutting the moose, they noticed a number of large humanlike, bare footprints in the mud. The wife of one of the hunters recognized these large footprints as having been made by a couple of sasquatches, due to the different sizes, and wanted to cast the largest one as a souvenir.

After loading the moose, they drove to Teslin, 60 kilometres away, to get casting material, but none was found, so they decided to drive another 176 kilometres to Whitehorse and get plaster of paris, a material from which they could make a cast. Returning to the kill site, around 6 p.m., they quickly made a slurry mix and poured it onto the largest footprint.

Then they drove back to Teslin

for dinner and returned to the location around midnight. The cast had set enough, by then, to be removed. As they were in the process of carefully removing the cast, they were subjected to loud screams, yells and growls—and trees were being thrashed about in the nearby forest.

That really scared them and, no longer feeling safe, they retrieved

the cast and quickly piled into the pickup truck and returned to the campsite. However, they decided not to sleep there that night, for safety reasons, so they picked up their gear, left the tent up and drove back to Teslin to spend the night at a motel.

At about 10 a.m. the following day, they went back to the campsite and discovered that

their tent and the overall site had been trashed. The tent was shredded and the sleeping bags were torn apart. Everything was scattered about and all of the perishable food was taken. It was a total mess.

They quickly gathered what they could salvage and threw everything in the box of their pickup, next to the moose, and hit the road back to Vancouver, with a 55.88-centimetre-long sasquatch footprint cast as a souvenir.

On October 26, 2015, I received an email from a local newspaper reporter who had received an email from the wife of one of the hunters. It included a photo and a brief description of their experience. I then contacted the lady in question to get the full story, as mentioned above.

I was getting ready to visit the site, but it was snowing by then and I could not get an investigation expedition going … so I waited until the spring of 2016 to start investigating.

In early June, I made my way to the Morley Lake Recreation Area and set up a campsite. I searched for their campsite, which I later found, then searched for the kill

site (as it had been described to me). That was a bit more difficult to find, but, finally, after three days of searching, I found a small, grown-in sort of trail that led to the kill site.

There were no signs of any possible sasquatch-related activity found during that expedition, but I didn’t give up and I returned, once again, to the location in 2020.

During the 2020 expedition, I again camped at Morley Lake and operated from there. Returning to the kill site, I found some ground disturbances that were not made by animal hooves but that could have been made by bears (or possibly by our legendary “bushman”).

A footprint cast of 55.88 cemtimetres would indicate that whatever had made the prints had to be some 3.4 metres tall and weigh in the vicinity of 500 kilograms, with a step of 215 centimetres. A footprint of that size is the largest-ever-reported print found in B.C. or in the Yukon, although a footprint of 60 centimetres was reputedly found in the Lake Laberge area, in 1902. ■

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive.

FROM WHITEHORSE TO THE KOOTENAYS My south-of-60 adventure

Iwas not going to ask anyone to drive me to the Whitehorse airport at 3:45 a.m. on a Tuesday. It would have been cruel. That night, I had everything ready and packed to spend the summer in the B.C. Kootenays, my first summer south of 60 in a very long time.

Instead, I had a lively chat with a taxi driver about local airlines competition, while watching his speedometer going too fast in a 70 km/h zone. We sure made it on time to the airport so I could catch the 5:30 a.m. flight to Vancouver and then Kelowna. After boarding in Whitehorse, the plane arrived in Vancouver around 7:45 a.m. My next flight to Kelowna was at 9:30 a.m. I walked the terminal end to end, to kill time and stretch my legs.

Closer to the boarding time, I took a seat in the waiting lounge by my gate. By that time, the lack of sleep started to hit me, but I was brought back to life presto when a very courageous mouse emerged in the daylight. From its hiding spot below a boarding counter, it ran like its life was on the line (it probably was), reaching the safety of a garbage container about three metres away. A few others saw the mouse, like I did, including three mesmerized boarding agents. They were unsure what to do (Treat it as an unregistered guest or a pest?). I knew what I was going to do: grab my bags and move.

Kelowna was hot and sunny. After reuniting with my boyfriend, Mark, who picked me up from the airport, we decided to hang out for a bit in the city before starting the long drive home to his place in the Kootenays. We parked the car one kilometre from Okanagan Lake and walked to its shore. Sitting on a bench right by the water, we shared bad jokes about Ogopo-

go and unlucky boaters. It was delicious.

On the walk back to the car, we passed the Francophone Cultural Centre of the Okanagan (Le Centre culturel francophone de l’Okanagan) where we learned, from their outdoor display, that Kelowna means grizzly bear in the local Okanagan language. It remains a rare sight but the bears can still be found in the region, despite a loss of habitat.

We left Kelowna and stopped for a sandwich break at Peachland, still on the shore of Okanagan Lake. We once again found benches by the water to sit on. “Are there still peaches in Peachland?” I asked Mark, who knows the region better than I do.

“Yes, but there are probably more vacation condos than peach orchards these days.”

“Well, there are no more white horses in Whitehorse,” I said.

“Yeah, that’s true,” he replied (to which we debated whether a place name should remain the same even after its namesake is “no longer”).

Osoyoos was the next stop after Peachland. This was our last break in the Okanagan Valley, before the ascent to the Kootenays on Highway 3. We had another sandwich break for me, and a coffee break for Mark, who was doing all the

LIFE AFTER S’MORES: NEW CAMPING DESSERT OPTIONS

S’mores are great, there’s no doubt about it. Melted marshmallows and creamy chocolate sandwiched between graham wafers will always be a hit—fun to make and deliciously messy. But sometimes you want to mix it up a little on your canoe or car-camping trip, or even after a backyard barbecue.

Here’s an idea: bake some simple, sturdy tart shells and provide ready-made fillings that people can combine in any way they like. How about lemon curd topped with a dollop of raspberry jam, or chocolate ganache and peanut butter; or Greek yogurt, lemon curd and blackcurrant jam?

If you run out of time to make tart shells, make cookies instead. It’s as much fun to pile fillings on a flat platform as it is to spoon them into a shell. Well, almost as much fun. In my experience, the mini-

tart shells are the best sellers. Raid your fridge for anything that might work as a filling—leftover Jell-O or chocolate pudding, whipped cream, custard and any jams or jellies popular amongst your crowd. Pack the fillings in the bottom of the cooler and use the most perishable ones first.

Peanut butter, jam and chocolate ganache will last the longest, and even with those three fillings, there are six possible combos.

When you’re ready for dessert, lay everything out on the table, on top of the cooler or on an upturned canoe, and invite your customers to dig in. Hold competitions for the best concoctions. Invite guests to make one for each other. And then pack everything away until tomorrow, when new winning combinations will emerge and legends will be born.

Scottish Shortbread Cookies or Tart Shells

Ingredients

❑ 1 cup (8 oz) butter at room temperature

❑ 1/2 cup sugar

❑ 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

• Beat butter until light and fluffy. Add sugar and beat for another couple of minutes. Stir in flour until thoroughly combined. Transfer dough to a counter dusted with flour, and press into a disc.

• For cookies, divide dough in two and shape into two rectangular logs. Wrap and refrigerate for 60 minutes. Slice into 1/2-inch slices. Bake on parchment-lined baking sheets for 15 to 18 minutes at 325°F. Alternatively, roll out dough until 1/4-inch thick and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter.

• For mini tarts, form dough into 24 balls of about 1 1/2 teaspoons in size, and place one in the center of each cup in a mini muffin tin. Press dough firmly and evenly into

the bottom and up the sides of each cup—use the rounded end of a pestle to help with this task.

• For larger tarts, form balls of about 2 tablespoons in size and place in the center of each cup in a standard-sized muffin tin. Use a quartercup measuring cup dusted in flour to help press the dough evenly up the sides of the cups. Finish off the edges by tamping down with your fingers and thumb.

• Prick base of dough with a fork and chill for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400°F. Bake shells for 10 to 12 minutes, until edges are golden brown. Remove from heat. If the tart bottoms have puffed up, tamp down briefly with the floured end of a pestle.

• Allow tart shells to cool for 10 minutes on a rack before removing them, and let cool completely before packing into a sturdy container.

Makes 15 muffin-sized shells, 40 mini-shells or about 36 cookies.

Ingredients

Lemon Curd

❑ 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice

❑ 2 tsp finely grated fresh lemon zest

❑ 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

• Whisk together juice, zest, sugar and eggs in a 2-quart heavy saucepan and then set over medium-low heat.

• Once the mixture has heated up for a couple of minutes, add the butter in batches, whisking constantly until curd is thick enough to hold marks of whisk and the first bubble appears on the surface, about 6 minutes. *If curd begins to curdle, remove from

Chocolate Ganache

Ingredients

❑ 3 large eggs

❑ 6 Tbsp (3 oz) unsalted butter, diced

heat and whisk vigorously, adding any remaining butter off the heat.

• Once thickened, remove curd from heat, pour through a sieve into a bowl and stir in lemon zest. Cool to room temperature, whisking occasionally to speed the cooling process.

• Cover and chill until cold, about two hours. Will keep, refrigerated, for about one week. Makes about 1 1/3 cups.

❑ 1 5 oz dark chocolate, broken into small pieces

❑ 1 cup 35% cream

❑ 3 Tbsp butter

Instructions

• Break chocolate into a heat-proof bowl. Combine butter and cream in a small saucepan over medium heat and bring to boil, watching carefully so it doesn’t boil over.

• Pour mixture over the chocolate, and cover with a plate. Leave for 5 minutes, then whisk vigorously to combine. Scrape into a container and cool to room temperature.

• Refrigerate until ready to use—ganache will stiffen as it cools, making it easy to spread on cookies or spoon into tart shells. Will keep, refrigerated, for up to two weeks. Makes about 2 cups. ■

SUMMER DAYS

Summertime in the Yukon is an absolute joy.

It is filled with barbecues, beach days, campfires and the never-ending supply of sunlight that we all yearn for over the other eight months of the year. Not to mention, it provides a perfect opportunity to get outside with my never-ever-worn-out threeyear-old who loves nothing more than to play outside without being bundled up in all of his snow gear.

So far, this summer has allowed my husband and I to try out a variety of activities with our son, and we hope to continue providing an array of novel experiences for him, as the rest of the season progresses. Whether it is continuing to work on his rollerblading skills or taking him out to practise on his tricycle or scooter, every moment that we are able to get our boy out in the sun is guaranteed to give us a much-happier child by the end of the day.

Simple things, like using chalk to draw rainbows, puppy dogs and caterpillars on the sidewalk outside of our home, can turn a boring afternoon into one full of laughter and smiles. And taking a half-hour to sit in the grass, blowing bubbles, can transform my cranky toddler into the ultimate example of an angel-child as he runs after the soapy orbs floating in the wind. I often wonder if the seemingly impossible task of trying to tame the breeze, long enough to allow him to catch the bubbles before they float too high in the air, is akin to a puppy chasing its tail, and I can’t help but chuckle at the comparison—especially when you see them happening side by side in the park.

Most recently, I have taught my son how to pluck a dandelion puffball and then blow the exposed seeds into the air while making a wish. “Just like when you blow out your candles,” I encourage as he takes a deep breath and blows as hard as he can (and usually misses the puffball entirely). I love these kinds of moments, and

it brings on a serene feeling of contentment as I see the wonder on his face while he watches the seeds blow away.

“Again! Again!” he begs with excitement as he searches the

field behind our house for as many of the puffballs as he can find. And I know I have created a new daily activity for us for the next few weeks. One I’ll happily indulge while I can.

The warm weather also brings on the ability to take my son to the water playground at Rotary Park. I know I am not the only parent who counts down the days for it to be turned on by the City. Especially on days where it’s too hot to just play on the park equipment. Being able to let him run through a circle of cool mist while avoiding the water cannons, with a gigantic grin, is always a fun time for our family.

My little buddy loves the water. It’s his favourite way to play, and while we have yet to get him down to Carcross to wade in waters of Bennett Lake, one of the

things he has been asking for the most over the last couple of weekends is for us to fill up his waterplay table on our deck, so he can splash around with as many toys as he can fit into it. It’s a great way for him to cool off, and it certainly provided a great deal of entertainment for my husband and I as he decided to live up to his goofball reputation by dropping a few ketchup chips into the water (to clean them off).

To my neighbours, I promise he was screaming out “I put ‘chip’ in the water!” I know it sounded like something else … Yes, summertime is definitely

my favourite time of year in the Yukon. And, as my child gets older and is able to do a lot more exploring in this beautiful territory, I know that more and more special moments await us in the years to come: his first camping trip, the first time I take him on a hike, the first time he goes fishing with his dad or finally starts biking around the neighbourhood with the other local kids. Not to mention our first family trip down to Skagway, to see the cruise ships and train station.

All of these things will help create some of his most-precious childhood memories, and I, for one, can’t wait to experience it all, right along next to him. ■

ACTIVE AND WELLNESS EVENTS ... ... cont’d

Nancy Ohm recently went to Germany, with her partner, to visit family and friends. After 11 years in the Yukon, the German cannot imagine making Germany her home again. She finds Germany highly populated and is looking forward to the silence of her Yukon home. She enjoys German cuisine (something all Germans miss), traditional German foods— Knödel (dumplings) and the variety of cheese one can buy in a German supermarket—not to forget Quark, a curd or a type of soft cheese that is rare in Yukon supermarkets.

Another thing is important to her: “To be able to hunt your own food is also something which I will never get tired of.” Ohm lives outside of Whitehorse with her partner who is a hunter and trapper, and she likes to go hunting with him. When she first came to the Yukon, she found the wide-open space fascinating and that people knew each other from all over the territory. She found that Whitehorse was a small town where everybody knew each other, back in 2013. “That has changed,” she said. Back then, she worked in hospitality (and still does) to get her permanent residency with the Yukon Nominee Program.

you could do afterwards (as a permanent resident) is what kept me motivated.” Immigrants could get sponsored by employers who could prove that they couldn’t find qualified Canadian workers. Antje never regretted doing the Nominee Program, even though it was hard, sometimes, with long night shifts and unfriendly customers. And she is now working as an operations manager for a tour company, drives school buses, occasionally, and works as a coach for Snowboard Yukon. She enjoys working in the winter and taking summers off—a kind of freedom one wouldn’t find in Germany.

Feelingfindingrooted, love

“I had been a gypsy, by heart, until I came to Tagish and the Southern Lakes area.

“I felt rooted; I felt like I had finally arrived,” said Heike Graf, looking back on her journey. In 2006, she came to the Yukon for a three-week vacation. After only a week in the wilderness, with a canoe and a stay at Tagish Cabins B&B, Graf next applied for a work and travel visa, which she got quickly. She went home for a few months, gave away all her belongings, sold her occupational-therapy practice and came back with a temporary work visa.

“Why did I stay? The spell of the Yukon? The wilderness, the woods, the mountains, the lakes, the people … way nicer, way more relaxed and way less than in Germany.” She got her permanent residency, fell in love, became pregnant, gave birth to her first child and built a home for her family.

and friends in Germany, regularly. “It feels always good to be back there. And some things are, for sure, easier—shorter distances, well-developed infrastructure. But do I miss it? Not too much. Yes, of course I miss to visit my family more often. But otherwise? Only the variety of bread and cheese.”

of cultural differences between them: different languages (Jenny didn’t speak much English, because in Eastern Germany they weren’t taught English) and different food.

Dennis is a member of the Kaska First Nation and is a visual artist and a performing artist. He is also a survivor of residential schools,

(born in 1842). He has never been to America but wrote a lot of stories about Winnetou, a hero in First Nations culture. Generations of Germans grew up reading his stories with a romantic picture of Indigenous people in their mind.

Jenny said she wasn’t interested in First Nations so much, before she met Dennis, but that she was interested in spirituality. “When I met Dennis, there was a higher power connecting us.” When she went back to Germany, after her first visit to the Yukon, her mother told her (without knowing anything about Dennis) that she had had a vision about an Indigenous person whispering words into Jenny’s ear that were in a different language. “I had not told my mother about Dennis, yet, because I wasn’t sure what to think. After my mother told me her vision, I knew that I had to follow my heart.” Jenny followed her heart.

So did Antje, a German who arrived in Whitehorse in 2013 after working at a local ski resort in Kelowna. When she found out about the Yukon Nominee Program, she was looking for a sponsor and stayed. For two years she worked night shifts at a hotel, just to get her permanent residency. “The community and friends and what

Graf was missing a coffee shop, in Carcross, where she could meet with other moms. “In order to get this, I had to provide it myself.” She has been operating Caribou Crossing Coffee, in Carcross, for 12 years now. In addition to that, she works as the facility manager and events coordinator at Haa Shagóon Hidi, all year-round. Graf said she tries to visit family

Shorty (a.k.a. “Jennis”) have been sweethearts for a long time. Back in 2006, Jenny came to the Yukon for a vacation. She met Dennis Shorty in Ross River, fell in love and moved there, she said, “to spent the rest of my life with the love of my life.” Originally from the former Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) in Eastern Germany, she noticed a lot

which Jenny didn’t know anything about. Dennis carried a lot of trauma with him, and he opened up to Jenny. The couple also operates the Raven Nest Lodge, in Ross River, where visitors can stay and experience Kaska First Nations culture.

Many Germans are interested in First Nations culture. They blame that on German author Karl May

Photographer Manu Keggenhoff also followed her heart when she moved to Atlin, B.C.—not quite the Yukon, but feels like it. Keggenhoff first came to the Yukon on a vacation, and when she and her now former partner pitched their tent at Marsh Lake Campground, on the longest day of the year, it hit her. “It was pure magic. I am sure that’s when the spell of the Yukon hit me.” They next day they travelled to Atlin and she knew: “I needed to live here.

“It was love at first sight.” ■

SKILLS CANADA YUKON INTERVIEW

Name: Jewnwel Junsay (2023 Territorial Skills

Competition Competitor)

Age: 19 (just graduated from high school!)

Current workplace: HvacTech Systems Inc.

Current Trade: Sheet Metal

me feel less anxious going to work.

How did you start exploring your career in sheet metal?

In all honesty, I never thought I would be interested in being in the trades at all. I took shop classes throughout high school because I really enjoyed doing things with my hands and it was a stress-reliever from my other courses at school. I didn’t really pay much attention to anything trades related until I was in my last year of high school. When contemplating what I was going to do in post-secondary, I was drawn towards the practicality of the trades and so I started exploring the different careers that suited my interest, which were sheet metal and welding, and leaned more towards that path.

Was there someone who inspired your journey into this specific trades sector?

number of things I am trained to make in the shop, I make parts—ducts, grille boxes, box pans, etc. that are requested by my co-workers working at the construction site—from sheets of metal. Sometimes I get sent to the site, which I always find exciting because of the different work environment, and I get to see other trades in action. At the end of the day, I tidy up my workspace and clock out.

If you met someone who was looking at exploring the trades sector, what piece of advice would you give them?

Can you tell us about your experience in the trade sector so far?

My experience in sheet metal and welding has been thrilling.

I have always been fascinated about how things are made, more specifically how metal structures are made. I find it intriguing that people who specialize in these fields make it look so easy. Being able to learn from and work with them makes me feel quite honoured. Also, going into my first day as a sheet metal worker was nerve-racking because I felt extremely pressured into excelling, right away, which I put upon myself because I did not want to be a burden to my coworkers and manager; however, they were kind, patient and highly supportive of me, which helped

I specifically cannot name one person who has inspired me in my journey into the trades because there are just plenty of them: my teachers, my co-workers, my manager, my welding-club instructors and people I have met at the Territorial and National Skills Competition. There are just so many people that have inspired me to be where I am right now. These people have [so consistently] shown me their love for their work that they inspire me to follow what I love to do.

How has your trade career made your life better?

Working in sheet metal has been fulfilling to me. Although there are some frustrating moments, I always see it as a fun challenge and an opportunity to learn and grow. I truly feel like myself when I’m at work.

What does a regular day on the job look like?

A regular day on the job would be arriving at the workplace at around 7:40 a.m. and waiting until the clock hits 8 a.m.— then the work begins. Limited by the

For those that are still in high school and are interested in trades but do not know where to start, I would suggest taking shop classes and talking to your school counsellor regarding your interest in the trades. They might be able to provide you [with] recommendations on courses that you might enjoy, and even lay out a career path for you. Going to local Trades shows and the Skills Canada competitions exposes you to many

stalling those parts. There is a lot of improvising involved to make the parts fit because the plans are not always right or there are obstructions in the way, but having your improvised plan work is highly satisfying.

Where do you see your career in five to 10 years?

It’s quite difficult to see myself in five to 10 years because a lot can happen in a year that can instantly change my direction in life, but my goal is to get my Red Seal in sheet metal.

types of trades and/or technology careers, and the “try-a-trade” booths are always fun to do too.

What is the most-interesting project you have worked on?

The most-interesting project

people know? Something about my trade that I think not many people may know is that the work is not always being in the shop and creating parts from sheet metal. It is also working on-site and in-

Tell us about your experience competing at the 2023 Territorial Skills Competition: I competed at the Territorial Skills Competition in Secondary Welding and it was such an enjoyable experience. I was then invited to be a youth representative for Yukon at the National Skills Competition for the Skills for Success Youth Assembly, where we made social-media content for Skills Canada, to promote the Skills Competition. It was such a surreal experience! The venue was massive and there were so many different trades and technology competitions that I didn’t know existed! ■

5th Annual VGCX Golf Tournament

This fun, informal tournament is on Saturday, July 15 at Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Whitehorse and is open to all golfers, regardless of skill level.

“The VGCX Golf Tournament is a fantastic opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues as we work together to support Every Student, Every Day and our territory’s students and educators,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. “And if you don’t golf, there is the opportunity to join us for the Hawaiian-themed reception and dinner.”

Well over 30 companies, primarily from the Yukon business and mineral exploration and development sectors, have committed to sponsor the event. New this year, all event sponsors will be entered in a draw to win a Mexican family getaway. Last year, the VGCX Golf Tournament raised over $51,000 for Every Student, Every Day. Since its establishment in 2012, Every Student, Every Day has directly supported more than 200 local student attendance projects with over $1.85 million raised primarily from Yukon businesses and individual donations. With the ongoing support of community partners, businesses and individuals, Every Student, Every Day increased its funding this year to $280,000. The Government of Yukon also increased its contribution to $70,000.

Combined, this year’s funding commitment of $350,000 is the largest ever and is supporting 36 projects in the 2023/2024 school year to help address student attendance challenges in creative ways.
