FROM THE ARTS

Heather has been writing for What’s Up Yukon since the early days of the pandemic. She enjoys sharing stories about Yukoners with a passion for what they do, whether it’s making artwork, producing a play or running a business. In her free time, there’s nothing she loves more than hitting the trails with her bike and her human and canine buddies.

THE ALCHEMY OF ALFF

Around 20 years ago, when the Available Light Film Festival (ALFF) was in its infancy, the week-long event included about 20 Canadian and international films that screened at either the Qwanlin Cinema Centre or the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre

Super-keen cinephiles could conceivably take in the entire festival, as screen times never overlapped, and matinees were only on weekends.

Fast forward to 2023 and ALFF has evolved into a two-week, 100-plus film event. There are 45 feature- and mid-length films, over 50 short films, live concerts, a storytelling event co-produced with Nakai Theatre and featuring

Christine Genier, artist talks, and the pitch event. That makes about 80 events, with screenings in the afternoon every day. For the first time ever, organizers are running a multi-screen festival with films showing simultaneously.

“This is a good year for people to look at their calendars and look at the program and maybe take some sick days if they’re working full-time,” festival director Andrew Connors suggested.

“People have to map it out,” he added. “That’s new for us.”

The format means that people won’t be able to go to everything this year; however, the most-popular films will be screened twice. ALFF 2023 will offer “a bigger experience for the audience and a bit of a bigger production lift for us,” Connors said. “But that’s awesome. We’re happy to facilitate that.”

As well, after COVID-19 shut down most live events in 2022, the return to a full-blown festival experience, including both film screenings and the industry conference, is revitalizing ALFF organizers.

“The online stuff was kind of fun, the last couple of years, but it was getting hard to get out of bed,” Connors admitted.

ALFF in-person, on the other hand, has a social energy that no online version provides.

“There’s an alchemy to it that

I love,” Connors said. “You just don’t know, you know? You don’t know who knows each other in the film world, and who’s never met, and who’s going to become fast friends, and who’s going to make a movie together, and who’s going to get financing, and, you know, who’s gonna get written up.”

Something that’s been part of ALFF since the beginning is ALFF Industry, which typically attracts 30–40 Yukoners every year. Although this side of the festival is not as public as the film screenings, it’s a significant part of ALFF that draws industry folks north.

“All the industry delegates, they want to come,” Connors said. “So it’s really great for Yukon filmmakers and media producers, and creators and media artists and even visual artists and musicians, to meet with the industry on their own turf. And so it just creates this great sort of milieu or ecosystem for people to come together and get to know each other, and to get

to know the work they make and what they do and how they live— and, you know, it’s the culture here.

“It’s a way for us to express our collective stories and our culture. There’s a tourism aspect to it, but more importantly it’s about the connection between people and cultures—Indigenous, nonIndigenous, diaspora—from within and outside the Yukon.”

Among the Yukon stories being told at ALFF, this year, is director David Curtis’s The Ballad of Caveman Bill, a “humorous documentary portrait [that] explores one caveman’s resiliency, adaptability and sustainability.” A very special guest is rumoured to be attending the screening.

“It looks like Caveman Bill will be in attendance,” Connors

said. “It’s his first time leaving Dawson, in about five years, and the longest that he’s ever spent in Whitehorse.”

Other feature films with local talent include Polaris, a “madein-the-Yukon eco-action fantasy” that is having its public premiere at ALFF. Voices Across the Water, Fritz Mueller’s and Teresa Earle’s documentary about canoe builders

Wayne Price and Halin de Repentigny, is also being screened. As well, there are a number of locally produced short films.

The ambitious format of ALFF seems like an astonishing feat after the challenges of COVID-19 in 2022. From the opening film, an animated documentary called Eternal Spring, the 2023 festival promises to bring festival-goers an exceptional cinema experience. And, if you prefer to watch your films at home or if you live in another city, there are selected online viewings available as well.

Connors sounded exhausted, as I spoke with him and he yawned several times, but still he said that the rewards of producing ALFF far outweigh the drawbacks.

“It’s the reason I don’t take a winter holiday and I don’t take a day off for months—because the payoff is, you know, you get all these filmmakers in attendance, and the audiences are there, and there’s just a buzz to it all.

“It’s a festival. It’s awesome.”

A NORTHERN PREGNANCY

The second trimester

Ihad high expectations coming into the second trimester. I thought it would be like waking up from a bad dream and riding a magical unicorn into being active and motivated … not so much, but still better than the first three months!

MONTH 4

We officially announced our baby to the world, and the freedom and relief was great. I loved being able to talk with other mothers and share the fact that pregnancy really does suck.

The stress of waiting on genetic testing was excruciating.

Did you know they measure the baby’s DNA in my blood? Yes, my “parasite” has, in fact, infected every part of me, and I’m sure this is some biological requirement so we don’t eat our young. But, either way, the Harmony Test is free to those over 35 years in the Yukon and provides a number of diagnostic tests and also tells you the gender of the baby!

We got the call from the midwife, after having to redo the test and, after waiting, were told everything was normal (low risk).

And, it’s a boy! Yes, I’m growing a teeny tiny “penis” inside of me. Super weird! But, not to worry, I have two important tasks as a future mother: to make sure he doesn’t grow up being an entitled white man and that his penis should be used for good, not evil.

At week 13, we had a midwife appointment and my husband Ryan came with me (he goes to every baby appointment). And we got to hear our baby boy’s heartbeat—170 bpm—like a freight train! Ryan said, “Wow, it feels really real now.”

As I entered my fourteenth week of pregnancy, I felt like a new woman. I didn’t feel too

exhausted, then all of a sudden I woke up feeling like a cat being dragged through a drainpipe, and my breasts hurt like never before!

It was not a good day and also a reminder that you can’t take any day for granted or have any future plans for fear of the baby’s development impeding your own physical well-being.

At 15 weeks, my pants were starting to annoy my belly. Although our baby boy was still behind my pubic bone, I’m guessing he was pushing all of my organs up for his own comfort. I started getting anxiety with every little cramp or twinge. At this stage, you can’t feel the baby move or kick. And you don’t get another ultrasound until 20 weeks and your first-trimester symptoms are gone. So, you think, Is it still alive?

I love having a midwife. I called their pager and they said to come in, and we listened to the baby’s heart beat—140 bpm (happy and healthy hanging out in there). It was a great relief to just chat, too, about all of the body changes, mind changes and life changes that feel very overwhelming.

MONTH 5

At week 18 I still can’t feel the baby boy, which can be a rather unsettling experience. You take each day hoping it’s still alive and growing accordingly. I weigh myself every week to make sure I’m on the right weight track and my weight dips, which worries me. (I really should stop looking things up on Google.)

I’m just waiting, impatiently, for our next ultrasound at 19 weeks, to make sure everything is happy and healthy with the baby.

The ultrasound went swim-

mingly, and our son, Maverick Leo Campbell-Clarke, only slightly

looked like an alien, which is good. The midwife said everything was all OK and that even though I was worried about only putting on six pounds, half-way through, he was measuring perfectly!

Week 20, we decided to head to Vancouver on Air North’s hockey special, to watch the Canucks play. It was my first Canadian hockey game and it was a great game to watch! We have planned our vacation to Mexico in January, and travelling on a hot plane while pregnant was not fun, so I won’t be looking forward to a longer flight south.

Twenty-two weeks and finally I felt the baby! Maverick was swirling and jabbing me. It’s a strange feeling to have going on inside of you. If you have ever seen the movie Alien, it pretty much feels how it looks when the alien is moving around, before it breaks free and attacks from the person’s belly!

MONTH 6

Week 23 and the freezingcold weather made it difficult to keep exercising. However, I finally invested in a Nintendo Switch, with Ringfit (highly recommend it for those who don’t have much time to exercise or who prefer to be alone and in the comfort of their own home). It definitely helped during the cold snap. And once it broke, it made it easier to continue doing outside activities. n

SEASONAL RECIPES

SWEET POTATO FRIES with Fancy Mayo

Sweet potato fries are fast and easy and feel vaguely healthy, which checks all the boxes for something you want to eat in the middle of a Yukon winter. Please trust me about the fancy mayo, because while it may seem that cocktail sauce does not belong with mayo, I can assure you that it does.

Serves 4, as a snack.

Ingredients:

❑ 1 large sweet potato, cut into 1/4-inch fries

❑ 2 tsp garlic salt

❑ 1 tsp smoked paprika

❑ 1 tsp brown sugar

❑ 4 Tbsp olive oil

❑ 1/4 cup mayonnaise

❑ Sriracha, to taste

❑ 1 Tbsp cocktail sauce

Instructions:

1. Set the oven at 425℉. Mix together garlic salt, smoked paprika and brown sugar. Toss the cut sweet potatoes in the olive oil, then sprinkle the spice mixture on top. Use your hands to toss the sweet potatoes so that the spice mixture coats all of the fries.

2. Lay the potatoes out on a lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, then remove from the oven and flip all of the fries. Bake for an additional 5 minutes or until browned.

3. In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, sriracha and cocktail sauce, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve fries along with fancy mayo.

2023 YUKON RENDEZVOUS FESTIVAL

Back To ‘The Roots’

After two years of the pandemic, Rendezvous will be back to form and celebrating its 59th festival.

The Rendezvous kickoff will be held at Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC) on Friday, February 10, at 6 p.m., with further events taking place between then and the main Rendezvous Weekend from February 24–26.

“We will have both new and returning ticketed events like the Rendezvous Fiddle Show, featuring Vollrath & Sullivan; and the Rendezvous Roots High Tea. Rendezvous Raffle tickets are on sale now, with the final draw taking place at 3 p.m. on February 25 in the KDCC Longhouse,” said Tamara Fischer (“Time Bomb”), board president of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society. In the past two years, smaller versions of the festival were held (because of Covid), but now that’s history: The organizers are excited to continue hosting community events that are free to attend, including KidsFest, the Snow Sculpture Exhibit, Open Snowpad and the Performance Stage, just to name a few.

The Call For The Cup Sourdough Sam contest is back, with shows running February 17–18 and 23–24 at The Local Bar. This year, Sams were chosen after a few evenings of Sam Searchers at Whiskey Jacks Pub & Grill. The popular tradition of the Sourdough Sam competition goes back a long way: It began in 1985 and was hosted by none other than Lake Laberge Marj. However, another popular tradition will be missing this year as there will be no Quest for the Crown contest because of the lack of applicants. Organizers encourage everyone who is interested, to apply for Quest for the Crown 2024. They hope to bring back the full contest for the 60th anniversary next year. People who are interested can apply throughout the year.

The Pyro Musical is returning on Saturday, February 25, and will be produced by the award-winning Midnight Sun Fireworks Crew, with the soundtrack being broadcasted on the radio. The fireworks can be seen all over Whitehorse. Rendezvous is also pleased to be

hosting Mr. and Mrs. Yukon, as chosen by the Yukon Order of Pioneers. Don and Penny Sippel of Whitehorse are this year’s Mr. and Mrs. Yukon. They will host a “Meet & Greet” in the Elders’ Lounge at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on February 25 from 1–3 p.m. Other returning favourites, such as the Axe Throw, the Chainsaw Chuck and the Log Toss, will also take place at Shipyards Park. The popular event of Snow Carving will also take place over the Rendezvous Weekend. Six smaller snow-carving blocks will be available for groups or families to try their hand at snow carv-

ing. Festival organizers will provide tools and an expert, to help people try their best. The Snow Sculpture Exhibit will be another highlight of Rendezvous. At Shipyards Park there will be events at the Performance Stage, such as the Pet Parade and Dog Howling contests. The festival will close off with the Yukon Rendezvous Parade on Sunday, February 26, starting on Main Street.

Let’s grow leg hair and a beard: Rendezvous is excited to bring back the Strength & Style challenge as a live event at The Local Bar on Saturday, February 18, from 7–8 pm. Yukoners are

invited to show off their ink, beards, leg hair, and ‘staches. Yukoners who want to help make the events, games and shows at the Rendezvous Festival possible, are welcome to volunteer: “Rendezvous would not be possible without the support of our community—especially our dedicated volunteers,” Fischer said. Each year, the festival gets around 100–200 volunteers, including the 70-plus characters and board members who are involved for months leading up to the main event. In the month of February, especially during Rendezvous Weekend, volunteers

assist with the Snowpad and Outdoor Events, as well as with Performances and Indoor Events. They also help to provide support for the Festival Grounds, as well as providing Operational Support. “There are many different positions available, including daytime and evening shifts,” Fischer added.

Anyone looking to volunteer this February can sign up now through Volunteer Local at yukonrendezvous.com/volunteer. The schedule for all events is online at yukonrendezvous. com. n

TALES OF NAHGANNE

INTRODUCING THE SASQUATCH

more Sasquatch-related activities throughout North America.

... they have shared this vast land not only with various animals but also with this unclassified, giant bipedal, hirsute hominoid entity commonly known as Sasquatch.

Through the years, these ambulating creatures have been identified by many names: the most common Yukon terms are probably Bushman, Bocq, Hairy Giant, Forest Giant, Ghanne, Kushtaka, Keecho, Nahganne and Wildman (in addition to the crude and silly expression of Bigfoot).

The term Sasquatch was coined by John Walter Burns (1888–1962) in the late 1920s. At the time, Burns was a school teacher and government Indian agent at the Sts’Ailes Nation (formerly known as the Chehalis First Nation) reserve, a short distance away from Harrison Hot Springs in British Columbia.

He had arrived in the area in 1925, and he soon started writing articles of interesting everyday activities for local and regional newspapers. Many of his stories related to various First Nations Peoples of that area: their daily lives and activities, their hunting practices, their history and that sort of thing.

Often, members of these First Nations would talk about strange hair-covered, humanlike giant creatures they had often come in contact with in the bush, calling them Sasqu’ets, a name originating from the Halkomelem dialect of the Sts’Ailes (a.k.a. Chehalis) First Nations.

Burns had heard of these strange creatures from an old friend, as well, the ethnologist and folklorist Charles Hill-Tout (1858–1944) who had written books about the various First Nations of British Columbia, each of his books presenting

stories and factual details about the old customs of the Pacific and Salish First Nations.

Burns became more interested in these First Nation anecdotes and started using these humanlike giants as the subject of his writings. However, to make his articles more interesting, he switched the original name Sasqu’ets to the English-sounding term, Sasquatch

One of his stories reached Macleans Magazine in April of 1929, under the title of “Introducing B.C.’s Hairy Giants” —a collection of strange tales about British Columbia’s wild men, as told by those who say they have seen them.

Burns’ interest in Sasquatch continued: in January of 1937, a local newspaper called The Chilliwack Progress presented an article entitled “The Sasquatch: A Collection of Extraordinary and Weird Tales About the Hairy Giants of the Chehalis Hinterland.”

In recent years, Sasquatch has become an interesting-if-puzzling subject for many people across North America who have become interested in this phenomenon. The reason for this increased interest is probably because Sasquatch enthusiasts, like me and many others, have been reporting

I have been interested in the Sasquatch phenomenon for over 20 years. During that period of time I have gathered many anecdotes, tales and stories about these giant bipedal entities, as told to me by people of various backgrounds, although most of them were Yukon First Nations. In every instance, I investigated these accounts to ascertain the validity and the accuracy of the reported activities.

It is my intention to present the readers of What’s Up Yukon with various Sasquatch-related activities, experiences, strange encounters and occurrences that Yukoners have shared with me through all these years. These happenings, shared by witnesses, include sightings, some with the subjects actually vanishing in front of the witnesses; unexplained and unidentified vocals of various types, like strange soft vocals, whistles, yells, shrieks, howls or clicking from unseen sources; unusual activities by family dogs while in the bush; sequential tree-knocking and rock-banging occurrences; strong, unidentified and short foul-smell occurrences; the discovery of large humanlike footprints, often part of a foot track; windless treethrashing occurrences heard and observed by witnesses; people being the victims of rocks and debris being thrown at them, often by an unseen source; unidentified bipedal movements in the forest; feelings of not being wanted in some location, with hirsute erections or odd feelings that one must leave a location for an unknown reason; or a combination of various events taking place together, and those sort of occurrences.

You are invited to follow this exciting odyssey of “Tales Of Nahganne” through a series of monthly columns. n

HEARTFELT (mis)ADVENTURES

Valentine’s Day was always fun for me as a kid

Handing out brightly coloured paper hearts, to all of my classmates, and devouring way too many Conversation Heart candies always made for a fun afternoon. While February 14th is better recognized as a celebration of romance, I’ve always felt that this love-infused occasion will always be more fun for the kids.

Having worked in a school for several years, I noted that Valentine’s Day always seemed to bring out a certain kindness in the children I worked with. There really is something special about the act of giving or receiving a message of “I care about you” that brings a smile to your face that is nothing but contagious. So, this year I wanted to help my son celebrate the occasion by doing something nice and baking a festive treat that he could share with his teachers and friends at daycare.

The plan was simple—we would use an easy-to-follow brownie recipe and cookie cutters to make the desserts look like mini hearts. My little guy was thrilled, and he couldn’t wait to strap on his apron and hop up onto the stool next to me to begin our creative and heartfelt endeavour.

The result of this plan was slightly different than intended.

Everything started out smoothly. Little Buddy helped add in the ingredients and I beamed at him as he successfully cracked his first egg into the batter. We chatted away and he proudly stated that his friends would think his brownies were “so yummy,” while I pretended not to notice him sneaking some chocolate chips out of the bag.

“Time to bake, Mommy,” he announced as the pan was placed in the oven. And when the timer went off, he came excitedly running back into the kitchen to see what he’d created.

The brownies themselves turned out wonderfully. So good, in fact, that I went into the next stage with way more confidence than I should have had.

Now, I should tell you that, while I greatly enjoy baking with my son, we do not have that much experience working with cookie cutters. We have tried them out with playdough, but he was always much more interested in telling me what shape they were rather than using them as tools. I should have kept this in mind as I laid them in front of my exuberant toddler and right next to a large sheet of chocolatey goodness.

“Giant cake!” Little Buddy exclaimed—and before I could stop him, he dove both hands into the brownies to help himself to a taste.

Luckily, he was unsuccessful in getting too much of the dessert into his mouth before I was able to stop him and explain that we first needed to use the cookie cutters to make heart shapes out of the brownies. I am also grateful that once I explained this to him, he was thrilled to give it a try.

And try he did.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh as I watched him work. It has become painstakingly clear to me that, while I can demonstrate what to do and offer to provide assistance, my child is way too independent to want my help with anything. And, it’s fine. This was something he wanted to do on his own, and it’s the thought that counts anyway. So, allowing him the chance to do it his own way, I stepped back and looked on as he, way too roughly, slammed the cookie cutters down into the brownies.

Our plan was for the brownies to look like hearts—little hearts that he could give out to his friends.

My son had other ideas and he looked down with pride at his masterpiece of smooshed chocolate crumbles.

With brownie bits in his teeth, he smiled and demanded I look at the treat he had made for his friends. And I couldn’t help but pull him into a giant hug when he picked up a chunk and handed it to me saying, “Treat for Mommy, too.” I realized, in that moment, that while we’d definitely have to come up with something else to bring to daycare, the lesson I had been hoping to get across had made it. He understood.

Valentine’s Day is about doing

something nice for the people you care about. And that looks different for everyone. For some, it is being given flowers; for others, it is hearing the words “Be my Valentine” or “I love you.” For my son, it was getting the chance to make a memory (and a mess) while making brownies with his mom. And for me, it was the hug I received from the love of my life as he got melted chocolate all over my hair.

Making memories (and a mess)

t Baking is a love language and in this case straight from the heart

Taking time to do special things together is q just one way to celebrate Valentine’s Day

I’ve replenished it regularly, and now I’m told that it doesn’t sell well enough for the Yukon Liquor Corp to keep stocking it.

What? Am I the only one who drinks the stuff? Where have all the Newfoundlanders gone? There used to be lots of them here.

I’m only 77 (and a half) years old, so I wasn’t around for the salt-fish-for-rum trade, two- or three-hundred years ago. But I am old enough to have had Screech when it was a Demerara rum, and then the Jamaican version. The current version does not show a source other than “Caribbean,” but it tastes the same here as it does in Newfoundland. Which is pretty damn good. And it comes in civilized quantities. They used to be known as forty pounders, as I recall.

Here’s the company it keeps in my cabinet: 51 of them if you include one Rhum Agricole and two Cachaças.

There was a time, apparently,

when staff at the store could take a risk and bring in something they thought might sell. Wray & Nephew’s White Overproof rum was one. Bought one, tried it and went back for another and it was gone! A year later, it’s back and I’m glad.

Then there was Ron Perla del Norte, a really nice Cuban rum that I was quick enough to catch before it disappeared. Am I doomed to enjoying stuff that just doesn’t sell?

It happened with my favourite Shiraz, too. Hmmm ...

A word to the wise: If you have a favourite libation, watch out for a little red dot on the price tag beneath. That means that once it’s gone, it’s gone. End of story.

Speaking of stories, there’s one at the liquor store about Fiji rum.

It seems there had been a rumtasting event (to which I had not been invited because I didn’t hear about it, dammit) and that some rare and expensive rums were brought in. Shortly thereafter, two bottles of Fiji appeared on the shelf at a price of over $300 each. Santa did not read my letter that year and these two bottles languished on the shelf for

a month or more, with me lusting after one the entire time.

Then, one day, there was only one!

The story is that someone with a shopping cart full of good spirits went through the checkout and the scanner beeped, but the rum didn’t register on the bill.

Even if it turned out to be free, the fact that there was a $300 bottle in the cart shows a certain level of commitment, don’t you think?

Well, I drooled over the remaining bottle for another month or so and it suddenly came on sale: “only” $160. It didn’t take very long (about 30 seconds, actually) to rationalize my upcoming significant birthday and this fine birthday present.

Not all the disappearances are unwelcome, though. A product (theoretically classed as a rum) labelled “Zaya” was an absolute dead ringer for vanilla extract. Put it in your chocolate cake batter and you wouldn’t notice any difference. It was like buying vanilla extract in bulk, except, as I recall, there was no actual cash saving.

Taken neat, it left a cloying flavour that affected the next

thing you put in your mouth—and anything else for the rest of the day. The only thing you could mix it with was—you guessed it— chocolate cake. We really like chocolate cakes, which is why you won’t see Zaya in my cabinet anymore. We’re back to buying vanilla.

It just occurred to me that, in the days before off-sales, folks needing a drink outside of store hours would buy vanilla extract. Maybe that’s where the idea of Zaya came from. Maybe someone at the board level in the company thought we really liked vanilla extract. Who knows.

And, a week or so ago, I found an orphan—a single bottle of Bayou, purportedly a white rum from Louisiana. It tastes like white table sugar and ethanol. Don’t bother bringing that one back, YLC. I forget where I found Panama Red. Probably not at the Whitehorse Liquor Store. I might have found it in Calgary at YYC, the Calgary International Airport. There’s a liquor store there inside Security. You don’t have to put your booze into your checked baggage; you can put it in your carry-on. But, I digress.

People of a certain age and background will recognize the name. Yup. Marijuana. Pre-legalization, there was a segment (on a cooking show) about marijuana in the kitchen. Apparently, besides smoking it, alcohol liberates the THC. So what was the chef using in her cooking? Panama Red Rum. Another one that tastes strongly of vanilla. Shortly thereafter, a friend gave me a few cannabis seeds from her uncle’s medicinal dope farm.

They produced very pretty plants. But there’s a reason it’s sometimes called “skunk.” By the time I realized that, they had some nice little buds coming. So I nipped off the buds and put ’em in the Panama Red and chucked the plants. I haven’t used any pot that isn’t porcelain (heh heh) or metal, for over 50 years, and I’m just a wee bit cautious about trying this concoction now.

So, on Friday I was finally confronted with an empty spot where Screech usually sat.

“Ah, it’s okay. We kinda knew you’d be in today.” And from the nether regions of the store came … the last two bottles of Screech. Thanks, folks! n

The Best Things in Life are… Rescued! Meet POSSUM!

He is a 2-year-old male Siberian Husky mix.

Named after his marsupial-like appearance, Possum is quite the character! Though he’s timid and a bit flinchy at first, the true cuddle baby will show himself once he trusts you. Due to his husky genes and working sled-dog past, Possum has energy to spare and would benefit from plenty of outdoor adventuring like ski-jouring or canicross!

We don’t think he’s had many positive social experiences with other dogs, as he tends to either freeze up around them or go into defense mode. He’s a gentle boy and would do well in a home with kids and possibly another dog with proper introduction. We don’t know how he is with cats.

If you are interested in adopting Possum, please fill out an online application at humanesocietyyukon. ca. If you already have a preapproved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards him.

FOSTER FAMILIES NEEDED

As most adoptions happen in the city, YARN relies heavily on foster homes in the city when pups are ready for adoption. We look after all the vet appointments and adoption applications.

YARN cannot continue accepting litters, unless it has foster homes to care for them in the city, while they find their homes. We are in need of some great Fosters Families to help our little fur-babies when they arrive in Whitehorse.

If you are interested and able to help in fostering please get in contact with us via our page @YukonAnimalRescueNetwork or send us a message via Facebook messenger or email: cheryl@YukonAnimalRescue.net

REIMAGINING VALENTINE’S DAY

Yukon ideas for this February 14th

Whether you feel that Valentine’s Day is overrated, highly commercialized or cheesy (or it’s your favourite holiday of the year), maybe we can all agree that life is short and that perhaps we should take whatever opportunities we have to celebrate love, in whatever form it may present itself. Valentine’s Day, while often marketed as a way to honour the romantic love between two people, is really a chance to recognize love in all its shapes and incarnations, whether it’s self-love, friendship, family or our lives with our romantic partners. Here are some northern ideas of how to mark the day:

With yourself

• Take yourself out on a date at this year’s Available Light Film Festival (ALFF), which runs from February 9–19, and be transported into a different world through their lineup of amazing features, short films and other events, many of which can also be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home, through ALFF

online, if you don’t want to make the trek into town. The Yukon is lucky to have been the home of Canada’s largest film festival North of 60, for over 20 years now.

• Make an appointment with a talented local massage therapist. Massage has so many benefits for our physical and emotional wellbeing and is a wonderful way to show yourself some love this Valentine’s Day. Invest in your health and consider making this a part of your self-care routine all year-round. If massage isn’t your thing, you might like to explore acupuncture, naturopathy or a variety of other integrative medicines available here in the Yukon.

• Show some love to our four-legged friends: volunteer at Humane Society Yukon and be reminded of how love doesn’t have to be complicated and that the love of an animal truly is one of the purest things in the world. Go to their website and see how you can sign up, or check out their donation wish list for other ideas on how to support their work. If you’re looking to add a furry companion to your life, adoption adoption instead of buying.

• Bring some art into your life. Sign up for an upcoming workshop at Arts Underground, check out

some theatre at the Yukon Arts Centre (Stéphanie Morin-Robert’s Blindside plays on February 15) or listen to some live music in town. Art is a wonderful way to remind yourself of your uniqueness as an individual and the value of selfexpression in loving who you are.

With your partner

• Go on a fat-bike ride or head to Mount Sima for some winter fun. If skiing is something new to both of you, check out Sima’s private ski and snowboard lessons (learning something together is a great way to invite some “fresh air” into your relationship).

• Hunt down a tasty beverage from Yukon Brewing Company, Solstice Ciderworks, Winterlong Brewing Co. or Two Brewers Whisky, and cuddle up in front of a fire. Love can be as simple as listening to your favourite record together on a cozy Yukon winter night.

• Start seedlings for your garden this year. It might still be a bit early, but if you have grow lights or some big south-facing windows, you should be okay. Dreaming about what you want to plant outside, in a few months, and taking the first steps to make that dream a reality is a lovely way to do something together and be reminded of your love all summer long, as you enjoy the

Yukon Convention Bureau

fruits of your labour. It’s also a great alternative to traditional store-bought bouquets of flowers.

• For some, gifts are the ultimate sign of adoration from their significant other, but for many, acts of service is their preferred love language. That is to say that actions really can speak louder than words (or a box of chocolates). If you know that your partner feels most loved when you do some sort of thoughtful gesture, such as going out and chopping firewood for your sweetie, without being asked; digging out frozen berries from the freezer and making their favourite jam for breakfast; or taking advantage of Air North’s next sale, and planning a vacation. Acts of service can be large or small: if it’s how your loved one feels your affection the most, doing dishes or letting them sleep in can be just as romantic as giving them a big, extravagant gift.

With family and friends

• Go ice fishing or dig out your snowshoes. It might not feel like it some days but soon enough the snow will be melting and spring will be here. Take advantage of the winter for as long as you can. Pack a thermos of hot

chocolate or a coffee from one of our local roasters, such as Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters, and make a day of it with the ones you love.

• Take a drive to Skagway or Haines, Alaska, or find a place to rent for a “friends weekend.” Sometimes we get so busy in our lives that we forget how important friendships really are. Take some time to reconnect, play and catch up. Go on an outdoor adventure or just have a cozy time inside with board games, good food and an evening of karaoke.

• While you may have heard of Lumel Studios’ “Hot Date,” did you know that they offer group workshops/events, as well? Arranging an afternoon of glass blowing, with a group of friends or extended family, is a perfect way to stay warm and share a good time together while it’s cold and windy outside.

• Make plans to hang out at the Yukon Rendezvous Festival. This year’s Rendezvous runs from February 10–26, with the main events happening from February 24–26. Check out their schedule online and set time aside to go have some Yukon fun with friends and family, especially after the past several months of winter hibernation. n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive.

How The Birds Got Their Colours

At first all the birds were white, And Eagle was their Chief.

All the birds had a meeting. They decided to paint each other.

The birds found all kinds of colourful paints and used feathers for paintbrushes.

Hawk painted eagle with pitch, Eagle painted Hawk with ashes.

Raven painted Ptarmigan with snow, Ptarmigan painted Raven with charcoal.

Whiskeyjack painted Woodpecker with blueberries, Woodpecker painted Whiskeyjack with currants.

Sparrow painted Chickadee with ocre, Chickadee painted Sparrow with salmonberries.

Owl painted the Loon with clay, Loon painted the Owl with mud.

Grouse painted Goose with soot, Goose painted Grouse with silt.

The Seagull had beautiful white feathers, so the swan decided not to paint each other.

All the birds painted each other very fancy, They were all so happy and started singing.

When I was a kid this Elder gave me a Gwich’in name, ”CHIH AHAA”. Translated it means ”walking ahead”. Allan Benjamin, CHIH AHAA

Allan Benjamin is a poet, a cartoonist, a fiddle player and a snowshoe racer from Old Crow, Yukon. Allan is a Vuntut Gwich’in artist who provides cartoons and poems to What’s Up Yukon. He introduces us to two sets of characters who represent Allan’s family and traditional Gwich’in life growing up in Old Crow.

MINE UPDATE

Eagle Gold Mine Medallions

On September 17, 2019, Victoria Gold’s Eagle Gold Mine celebrated its first gold pour and now, on February 1, the Company launched the sale of one-ounce 99.99% gold and one-ounce 99.99% silver medallions to commemorate the journey of the mine from discovery through to production.

“The Eagle Gold Mine is leading the Yukon’s New Gold Rush,” says Victoria Gold President and CEO John McConnell. “The Company is very excited to o er our newly-minted gold and silver medallions to those who would like to own their piece of the largest gold mine in our territory’s history.”

The gold and silver medallions became available for purchase online commencing February 1 at vgcx.com.

The one-ounce gold medallions are presented in a commemorative package, which features photos of the Eagle Gold Mine and celebrates Victoria Gold’s valued relationship with the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND); within whose traditional territory the mine is located.

The First Nation is also featured on the gold medallion highlighting Victoria Gold’s commitment to balancing responsible development and the mine’s opportunities with FNNND’s traditional, cultural and environmental values.

“We hope that Yukoners are as proud of the opportunities and benefits the Eagle Gold Mine provides to the territory as we are and enjoys how these medallions represent both our rich past and our promising future,” adds McConnell.

Limited stock of the gold and silver medallions is available. For more information and to purchase, please visit vgcx.com.
