t’s confession time in Geezerville.

I recently spent my allotted 450 words in this space musing about some of the beguiling delights to be found in the “be” section of the dictionary.

Among other things, I wrote that the verb “to be” may be “substantive, copulative or auxiliary; sometimes active, sometimes passive, sometimes subjunctive.”

Immediately after hitting Send, my conscience began to twitch.

Show me an instance of that verb being used in the passive voice, it fairly screamed at me.

Try as I might, the best I could come up with was the role it plays as an auxiliary to help form a passive-voice construction.

Example: “The ball was hit by Rob” (passive), as opposed to the no-nonsense active-voice rendering, “Rob hit the ball.”

If anyone can dredge up a true example of “to be” used substantively in the passive voice, I’d love to hear of it.

Confession leads back to conscience (which, as the Bard would have it, makes cowards of us all).

In turn, that conveniently conducts us to a confrontation with the “con”

section of that same concordance.

Without question, the nuances of English can confuse—nay, confound—the most conscientious of second-language students.

Used as a prefix, “con” denotes a linkage, but only when used before 13 specific consonants.

Damned if I can conceive a logical explanation.

When journalists employ the current buzzword “conflate,” in the sense of stitching two or more separate things together, it often results in a conjectural confabulation marked by a high degree of condescension, if not outright conceit.

Unless speakers and listeners are concordant, consentient or merely concessionary, this could provoke bitter contestation, or spark a contentious rhetorical conflagration.

Should we condone or condemn such conductible conduct that can contaminate our conversation?

Who among us can confidently distinguish between condolatory and consolatory gestures toward a grieving friend? Between conceptive and conceptual? Or between concupiscence and concubinage? And where does consan-

guinity factor in?

When is a congelation different from a conglomeration—or a conglutination, for that matter? Don’t even get me started on how the latter two do (or do not) differ from agglomerations or agglutinations.

If you can associate with a consociate, is the converse also true?

Can you consign a consignment to a consignee without a formal consignation, or some other concrete consideration?

Can a conspiracy be consonant with conspicuousness? Can a constitutional be constructive in relieving conjunctivitis as well as constipation?

These ramblings may contain little more of substance than a confirmation of creeping consenescence in Geezerville.

On the other hand, they represent a congenial (congenital?) attempt at conforming to the consummate conjuration of that great man of letters, E.M. Forster: “Only connect.”

id you have someone during your youth or adolescence who made a huge impact on your life? Someone who cared about you, spent time with you and perhaps encouraged you in positive ways? Maybe they were a coach, teacher, youth leader, neighbour, family friend or someone who was only briefly in your life, but at a critical time. Mentoring—as we call it at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon (BBBSY)—can truly change the trajectory of a child’s life and is really as easy as spending a couple of hours a week together.

Forty years ago this December,

Big Brothers started in the Yukon as a volunteer-run organization to help boys, who were needing a male role model in their lives, to be matched with a caring, safe and responsible adult. The organization was funded by local service clubs and became a registered charity in 1985. In 1991, Big Brothers of Yukon amalgamated with Big Sisters of Yukon.

“I think I was six years old when I got matched with [my Big Brother] Rick,” said Jaret Slipp, executive director of YuKonstruct, who was a Little Brother in Ontario.

“Rick was a fun guy and took me to baseball and football games.

The impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs is farreaching and does have a ripple effect in families, schools and communities. In fact, research has found that for every dollar invested in Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs, there is an $18 social return on investment.

“I really didn’t have consistent male figures in my life that were focused on me,” said Slipp. “My mother had some relationships after her divorce, but of course a lot of attention was between them.

Rick was 100 per cent focused on me, and having fun and sharing time together. As a young boy, trying to make sense of things, that undivided attention was a huge change and a very positive one for me.”

As part of a Canada-wide federation, with 108 agencies currently, BBBSY has evolved and changed over the years and now has two staff supporting 20–30 matches annually. The agency has a satellite office in Dawson City, in partner-

Volunteers interested in becoming mentors—or Bigs—go through a rigorous application and interview process, including a police check to ensure they are committed to being a positive role model in a mentee’s—or Littles’— life.

Aside from the traditional community mentoring program where Bigs and Littles spend two to three hours a week doing something they both enjoy in the community, we also have an In-School mentoring program that allows Bigs to spend time with their Littles for one hour a week on school property.

Additionally, we have two group mentoring programs, Go Girls! and Game On!, which also take place in the school environment.

We have Bigs from all walks of life, and there is no perfect mentor. All that matters is that you are a caring adult who understands the impact of spending time with a child or youth.

“Rick was a good man, with ambition and very positive values,” said Slipp. “I know that a lot of who I am and my positive path in life is due to the lessons, values and confidence I gained from Rick.”

Spiritual Undertones

Brandon Isaak will launch his latest CD, Rise ‘n’ Shine, on November 9 at the Old Fire Hall

t’s been a fairly typical autumn for bluesman Brandon Isaak.

Typically busy, that is.

The former Whitehorse musician spent most of September on tour in Germany and Holland, including an appearance at the prestigious Guitar Summit in Mannheim, Germany, on behalf of his sponsor, Redemption Guitars.

Earlier this month, the singer/ songwriter/guitarist visited parts of Alberta with bass-player Keith Picot, his multimedia partner in the Silver Screen Scoundrels.

His October and November calendars also note a steady roster of gigs in B.C.’s lower mainland, where he currently lives.

On top of all that, he will return to his Yukon roots on November 9 for two back-to-back shows to launch his latest CD, Rise ‘n’ Shine.

“I’ve been working on it for about eight months, something like that. Slowly chipping away at it, because I’m on tour,” he said.

“It’s a busy life, as you know, so you try to get a chance to hit it when you can.”

After two acoustic solo albums, Bluesman’s Plea (2011) and Here on Earth (2014), the new compilation marks a bit of a departure.

“I’ve been playing a lot of lap steel guitar, so that’s a new thing that’s not on any of the other ones.

I’ve got Jerry Cook on horns, and a couple of the tracks have a little horn section. There’s some really cool swing stuff on there, too,” he said.

“What I’m hearing from people is that each song has its own character and personality. So, it’s a diverse record. I like when records

are fresh, not the same thing over and over. It’s nice when you can put one record on and it sort of covers a lot of ground.”

Although the album has no theme, as such, there is one element that ties it to its predecessors.

“There’s a little spiritual undertone to the album, maybe.

Most of my records do have a bit of a spiritual undertone. I think that would probably be the one common thread between all of them,” he said.

Isaak’s grandfather was a minister, and his mother played piano in church, as well as teaching Sunday school.

“I was in the church quite a bit, so that piqued my interest in the Bible. Over time, you learn to look at other concepts and religions, and try to learn about them all, and accept everybody for what they do and what they believe,” he said.

Both Bluesman’s Plea and Here on Earth included gospel numbers, with chord progressions reflecting the African-American influence on the southern church, “and obviously, the singing style and stuff,” Isaak added.

Isaak admits his previous solo album had him stumped for a name until his friend, Harpdog Brown came to the rescue when they were on the road together.

“I said, ‘Dog, I don’t know what to name the new record,’ and he said, ‘Well, let me go into the bank for a minute and I’ll think about it.’ And he came back and said, ‘Here on Earth.’

“And I said, ‘That’s strange. Why?’ And he said, ‘Because, man, you’re from another planet, the way you play all this stuff.’ So I thought, That’s kind of a cool name. I like it. There’s a million other things I think COVER ART: J.D. Sipe when I hear that title, too.”

Not to mention Isaak’s own father, singer/bandleader Ed Isaak, who has been a fixture on the Yukon music scene for decades.

“I’m really happy that I got Pops on there. He’s playing bass on a couple of tracks. There’s sort of a ’50s ballad tune I wrote called ‘Blame It on the Girl’, and he’s on there.”

The CD release party on Friday, November 9 at the Old Fire Hall is being co-presented by Jazz Yukon.

Thanks to brisk, early sales, it will now consist of two separate shows, at 6:30 and 9 p.m.

Isaak will be fronting a trio that includes Yukoners Lonnie Powell on drums and Paul Bergman on bass.

“I play with drummers all over the world, and Lonnie’s one of my all-time favourites. We went to Europe once for three and a half weeks (with The Twisters). Any chance I get to play with him, I’m always thrilled to do it. He’s the man,” Isaak said.

“I met [Bergman] in an elevator in Regina. He’s an awesome bass player. He’s so versatile; he’s just a groove monster. So playing with those two, it’s a real dream team.”

t seems we are living in an age of electronic wizardry. Every season there is a raft of new GPS and communication devices as well as night-vision, heat sensors and range-finding scopes. In the current race to get all these new gizmos, we often forget about some old and very dependable items from the past.

At the top of any list of “been around for a while,” dependable gear should be a map and an oldfashioned compass. Neither needs batteries and, kept in a secure container, will last forever. It’s hard to beat a GPS device until it’s full of water, broken or out of juice. A map and compass, provided you know how to use them, should help

you find your way and should be a backup to your electronics.

Genuine duct tape, or “100-mile-per-hour tape” can be used to repair torn packs, tents or clothing. It can be used to wrap around the front half of your boot to hold the separated sole in place.

It works well on “hotspots” on your feet where chafing has started and will soon be a blister. It is also very hard to beat as a fire starter. A big roll is too bulky to carry on a backpack trip, but a piece about a metre long can be wrapped around your toothbrush handle or the pen

that accompanies your journal or crossword book.

Often overlooked is dental floss, which is extremely strong considering how thin it is. With a sailmaker’s needle it can be used to stitch tents, packs, clothing and even people.

It is tough enough to fasten your light tarp or rain-fly to branches for an emergency shelter. It comes on a spool inside a plastic sleeve with a built-in cutter, or remove the spool and just carry that using your knife to cut lengths.

On the camping rack in our bigbox stores, there are a number of fire-lighting gadgets that are battery-powered or create a spark.

They are simply not dependable, and if you are clumsy with any degree of hypothermia, you will not be successful at creating your much-needed survival fire. It is also not easy to light a fire with a spark, compared to a flame. BIC lighters are very dependable and

are so small that two or three can be carried in various places in your clothing or pack. These lighters come in packs of five for about a dollar a piece. Modern BIC lighters are “kiddie proofed” with a narrow metal strap over the thumb-wheel, which creates the spark to light the fuel. In even a mild hypothermic situation you will not be able to work the sparker wheel with that strap in place. Using needlenose pliers, just remove that strap from each of your new lighters and they become much easier to get a flame.

The newly available gadgets have varying degrees of dependability and longevity while many old-time devices seem to go on forever.

I

’ve always loved the smell of woodsmoke. I know this is not the case for everyone and that too many wood stoves in a small residential area can cause concern. I am lucky to live in a part of town where few people heat with wood. These days, my woodsmoke saga begins in late August, with the purchase and delivery of four cords of wood, split and cut into 16-inch lengths to fit in our stove.

Split is a very optimistic term because almost every piece needs to be fed through an electric log splitter. This is in order to make the pieces manageable for our 70-year-old backs and arms. It is a job that I actually enjoy. I like seeing the huge, untidy pile of wood gradually transformed into a wood shed filled with a neat stack of firewood ready for winter. All that is left of the pile are scraps to be raked up—some for kindling and some for the compost.

The way the routine has worked out in our household, I have the job of wood hauler, splitter, maker of kindling and gatherer of twigs.

Every morning, soon after breakfast, I head out for a walk with our dog. Outside our back gate is forest, all the way west to Alaska and the Pacific. I have come to know the local trail system very well.

One of the things I noticed in the forest, when I started this routine

was that many trees snap off, in strong winds or with a heavy snow load, and leave a twiggy skeleton on the ground. Once it has been there for a couple of years, those small branches make the most efficient fire starter I have ever used. So, on my dog walks, I gather armloads of dry twigs from these fallen trees and stockpile them in a bin outside the house. Once the wood stove is in regular use, we keep a space in the garage filled with big pieces of firewood, kindling and an old coal shuttle filled with these dry twigs.

As I go out on these morning walks, it is the smell of woodsmoke, from the chimney, that accompanies me and greets me on my return.

Last winter I cleaned the chimney for the first time. The thaw/ freeze cycles in mid-January had resulted in a layer of creosote around the chimney cap, and the chimney was not drawing properly.

As my husband was away, I decided that I would clean it. Our roof is not particularly high, and the chimney is quite close to one side.

I chopped the ladder out of the snow and ice and hauled it around to the side of the house, closest to the chimney, and cleared a spot for it to stand. At full extension, the ladder just barely protruded above the eavestrough, but the

I wore black. I thought that was an appropriate colour for a chimney sweep and would disguise the soot that would be an inevitable side effect of the job. I readied the equipment: pliers to undo the screws that held the cap, wire and bristle brushes, the chimney brush and the three lengths of yellow rod that screw together. It turned out to be a little tricky, as the roof was covered in snow and ice. Both

I found the best tactic was to hug the chimney with a foot on either side. Then I had both hands free to undo the screws on the cap and manipulate the rods.

This meant that my face was close enough to the chimney cap to taste the creosote. All went well until I attempted to pull the brush back up the chimney—a very difficult thing to get started, as the stiff bristles oriented themselves, pointing up on the downward descent, and were quite stubborn about reversing direction. While I was up there, a friend came by and was horrified by my activity.

He refused to leave until I was back on the ground with the job done. Actually, it all went pretty smoothly. And it worked. The chimney once again worked as it was supposed to. And my old black parka now has a permanent smell of woodsmoke.

Autumn is in the air, once again, and the annual firewood ritual has started. The wood has been delivered, and as I set out on my morning walk, the wonderful smell of woodsmoke is in the air.

On July 8, 1992, the Whitehorse Star reported a find near Frances Lake of what was stated to be a worldrecord-sized piece of jade at 577 tonnes. It was speculated to be worth $5.8 billion. There is no consensus on what is the largest piece of jade ever found. To start, there are two different types of jade and it has many imposters.

T

he one record that can be confirmed is the largest carved piece of jade. This is a statue of Buddha located in Anshan, China. The statue weights in at 260 tonnes and is from a piece of jade from British Columbia.

The name jade comes from the Spanish ijada. When the Spanish first reached what is now Mexico, they noticed the Indigenous Aztecs ground up this green rock and made it into a drink for people who were sick. They called it the piedra de ijada or stone of colic.

The Aztecs valued the rock more than gold, whereas the Spanish just wanted the gold.

There are two varieties of rock known as jade: nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite is made of the mineral group known as amphiboles.

Jadeite is made of pyroxene minerals. The difference is in the chemistry. Nephrite is formed by a double chain of silicon and oxygen molecules or silicates. Jadeite is formed by only one silicate

chain. Other elements can attach to these chains, such as calcium, sodium, aluminum, iron and chromium. Those different elements will help determine the colour of the rock. Jade can be green, white, black, blue, red or yellow.

Nephrite is lighter than jadeite and is a bit softer, but it is tougher. Toughness is the ability to resist breakage. It goes back to the double chain of silicates the rock is made up of. These chains form twisted aggregates of minerals woven together in an interlocking pattern, making it tougher than steel.

British Columbia is the world’s largest producer of nephrite in the world; it is their official gemstone. The Dease Lake and Cassiar areas are the most prolific jadeproducing areas in the province, and this belt extends up into the Yukon.

The largest producer of jadeite in the world has always been Burma, now Myanmar. Most of

Jadeite sales make up a large portion of Myanmar’s gross domestic product (GDP). It is an industry reportedly ripe with corruption.

There are no known jadeite deposits in North America north of California, just nephrite.

Jade is generally associated with rocks known as serpentinites. Serpentinites are formed from very dark (ultramafic) rocks formed from the Earth’s mantle.

In the presence of seawater and the addition of heat and some pressure, these ultramafics metamorphose into serpentinite. Areas of the Earth’s crust, where tectonic plates are sliding by each other, produce the required heat and pressure.

Jade is formed from the serpentinite through further metamorphism and chemical reactions with surrounding rocks. Jade bodies are not usually very large. The pods of jade at King Arctic, near Frances Lake, were about five

In areas where jade was originally found, the Indigenous people of the area made use of it. Jadeite has been found in some of the oldest graves found in China. Axe blades made of jade have been found in Guatemala that date back to 1200 BCE. In the Fraser River area, in British Columbia, nephrite blades and rings have been dated back to 4000 years BCE. Jade was used for both ornamental and practical use. The toughness of the nephrite jade made it ideal for axe heads and chisels. You cannot shape jade with metal chisels. The only method of shaping nephrite is with the use of abrasion. Today, diamond-tipped tools do the job, but the Indigenous people used a softer rock to rub abrasive ma-

terial, like quartz-rich sand mixed with water, over the jade. Dozens of hours could be spent manually wearing the nephrite into the shape you wanted. Recreating these techniques today shows that nephrite can be worn down one to two millimetres an hour, by hand.

The sources of the nephrite used thousands of years ago in B.C. were boulders and cobbles found in the Fraser River, south of Lillooet. Since nephrite is so tough, large pieces can be transported naturally many kilometres from the source, intact.

This way of collecting jade has not changed all that much in modern times. The nephrite jade in the Dease Lake–Cassiar region occurs as rounded boulders in creeks, and glacial deposits.

Eventually these are tracing back to the source. Nephrite was most certainly utilized by the early Indigenous people of the area, but

The value of jade is based on colour, clarity, translucency and texture. It is very difficult to evaluate a boulder of jade from the outside. The rock weathers a brownish grey, so it either has to be drilled and cored or a slice taken off to really tell how valuable the piece may be. Low-grade jadeite and nephrite sell for about the same price. Highgrade jadeite is much more valuable than high-grade nephrite.

Another very important property is how free of fractures the rock is. Fractures can limit how large a sculpture could be. For that reason, jade cannot be mined by blasting. The explosives would create microfractures in the jade, even far away from the blast.

The Cassiar asbestos mine contained a lot of good-quality nephrite, but the fracturing caused by the mining for asbestos meant only small intact pieces could be salvaged. In the early years at Cassiar, much of the jade was discarded in waste piles because the company was only interested

Once a boulder has been evaluated, it has to be moved out to be sold or processed. If the jade is valuable and small enough, it can be flown out by helicopter. Large pieces are usually moved out in the winter by sled, with dozers. If a boulder is too big to move or it is mined from the source, miners can use wire saws mounted with diamonds to slice off manageable pieces. They can also be drilled and hydraulic spreaders inserted in the holes to force the rock apart.

Very much like the Yukon’s placer miners, most jade mining is done by small operations, sometimes just mom and pop. Discovery Channel has a show like the Yukon Gold production, but based on jade mining in northwestern British Columbia, Jade Fever.

There are a number of occurrences of serpentinites: south and east of Marsh Lake, down towards Atlin, east of Quiet Lake, the north Alaska Highway—Kluane area, and Clinton Creek, to name a few.

No jade has been found at any of these, yet.

The Frances Lake area find in 1992 was on the King Arctic property located west of the Robert Campbell Highway, about 120 kilometres north of Watson Lake.

Jade on the property was commercially produced there in the late 1980s and early ’90s.

The best place to start your search would be Jade City, British Columbia, about 120 kilometres down Highway 37 from the Alaska Highway. They have a yard full of jade boulders from area operations. They also have informative staff who are cutting, polishing and selling jade. You might even run into the stars of Jade Fever there.

ooking steak and mushrooms in a cast iron skillet is a fast, one-pan, weeknight meal that feels a bit decadent. And any time you get that indulgent feeling from a meal that’s relatively healthy, it is bound to become a household staple.

Letting a steak sit in some bourbon for a few hours (or days) is the easiest way to make a simple meal a bit special. The bourbon adds some woody sweetness to the meat, and the alcohol acts as a gentle tenderizer.

If you happen to have a freezer full of wild game, a few drops of bourbon can help take a bit of the edge off that gamey flavour that some people find offputting.

Place steaks in a ziploc bag and add bourbon. Let sit in the fridge at least overnight, but up to three days. Remove the steak from the bag, then season with salt and pepper and let sit while you cook the mushrooms.

Cook until onion is soft, about 3 minutes, then add sliced mushrooms and cook, tossing often until mushrooms are brown, about 10 minutes. Remove from the skillet and place the skillet back over medium-high heat.

Add the remaining butter, olive oil and thyme to the skillet, and when the butter has melted, add the steaks. Cook until steak is nicely browned, then flip and cook until desired doneness. Let the steaks rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving on top of sautéed mushrooms.

very October, Mount Sima starts snow production and welcomes hundreds of athletes from all over Canada for preseason training in November.

Whitehorse, Yukon, is the perfect location and climate to have early snow production to build the national-level freestyle park terrain and have runs open for athletes to practice ahead of the winter competition season.

Pre-season means training outside of the regular competition season for alpine sports. Because Mount Sima is located in the Yukon, winter arrives sooner than on most other mountains. This means they can make snow sooner and have better weather than most for training.

“Copper Mountain in the U.S. had always been where most alpine teams would go for training; and Austria for Park and Freestyle,” said Sam Oettli, operations manager at Mount Sima. “With the low Canadian dollar this is very expensive, and with climate change, they are no longer able to have training as early as us in November.

“Now teams come to us as the cost is better and they get to stay inside Canada with a more reliable product. It comes down to perform-

ance advantage. The earlier teams and athletes get on snow, the better they perform.”

Months of preparation are required to make Mount Sima a nationally renowned pre-season training venue. “For the entire month of September, my crew is clearing all the runs of willows and tall grass, and insuring the runs are ready for snow. This also included dirt work and drainage prep,” said Oettli. “During the summer, all the snowmaking equipment [nine fan guns, six air water sticks, 15 water sticks, three generators, air compressors, the water line and pumping station] are checked, repaired and tested so they are ready to go in October.”

October is when Sima starts making snow. “We are ready by the first of October, but really get going by the fifteenth, when cold arrives. Operations at this point are 24 hours and go until the end of November,” said Oettli during his brief free time for this interview.

“Run-building and grooming of the man-made snow starts as soon as there has been enough made,” he explained. “First is the base of the mountain, bunny hill and Dan’s Descent. Then we move to Gold Rush, Terrain Park—and Hailey’s is last.”

This all crams into a six-week time frame of countless hours of work.

“I am always amazed by the skill and dedication of our crews as they push to make our deadlines,” said Oettli. “It truly is a Herculean task.”

Since its inception in 2015, preseason training has seen strong, steady growth in the participants; from 13 teams and 181 athletes and coaches in 2015; to 19 teams and 257 participants in 2016; and 27 teams and 314 athletes and coaches in 2017.

“We have been very pleased with the growth of the pre-season training program at Mount Sima,” said Scott Casselman, president of Friends of Mount Sima. “Last year, the program resulted in 2,479-person days for the athletes and coaches in Whitehorse. That translates into hotels, airfares, restaurants, visits to the Canada Games Centre and local shopping venues.

Not only does the preseason program bring revenue to Mount Sima, it also brings a significant economic opportunity to the Whitehorse business community.”

F

ood security is an ongoing concern for northerners, as remote communities as well as Whitehorse struggle with access to reliable and affordable produce from southern suppliers. Executives at the Yukon-based power company Solvest Inc. think they’ve found a solution.

The company is in the pilot phase of a project that aims to provide an off-the-grid solution to the Yukon’s often tenuous access to fresh greens as it tests out its first CropBox this winter. “It’s a simple, easy [way] to use product that really can make a big difference in terms of northern food security,” said Solvest vice president Ben Power.

A CropBox is hydroponic agriculture in a shipping container, and they say that it can pump out between 400 and 600 edible plants per week. A single unit has 2,700 planting spaces on an average three- to four-week growing cycle.

The CropBox has an insulation and heating system meant to ensure ideal growing temperatures yearround. Because of the contained nature of the growing environment, crops can be grown year-round in northern communities that otherwise wouldn’t have the same kind of access to these foods in the winter months.

Another selling point is that no pesticides are required in a contained environment, and food produced in a CropBox can be free of

such chemical additives. “Not only can it supply a fresh and local food supply that has no pesticides in it, [a CropBox] can do it at a lower cost than most produce in the local grocery stores,” said Power. “So you don’t need to double your grocery bill in order to buy local supply from CropBox.” Power said that the CropBox hydroponics solution is ideal for northern communities because it’s both cost effective and easy to use, which he said are two of the most important factors to success in northern Canada.

“It’s not a bold statement to say that you can take someone with no growing experience in growing anything and, with little over a week’s worth of training, have them running one of those units,” said Power.

Once your unit is up and running, the company has developed an app that allows you to control environmental factors inside the box from your cellphone, wherever you happen to be.

Power said this technology also presents advantages to grocery stores interested in selling fresh and local greens. “Produce can go straight from the CropBox into the grocery store or onto someone’s table. You can manage your supply on your shelf in a way that you never could with a southern supplier,” he said.

They’re using a solar-power storing device called a power box that can be hooked up to solar panels for year-round electricity. “A power box is designed to keep the CropBox completely off the grid so that if you have no electrical hookup you can just put the power box beside it and line it with solar panels.

“The power box is filled with lithium Ion batteries. With a backup generator, in case you don’t get enough sunlight, the idea is that you can run this thing completely on its own,” said Bos-Jabbar.

per year. He said that while conventional agriculture uses 270,000 gallons of water, the CropBox uses a relatively low 27,000 gallons. Using lettuce as an example, he said that conventional farming yield is nine tons or 213 tons for greenhouses.

This compares to 1,347 tons yield from a CropBox. Those who would like to see the CropBox in action are invited to tour the project in the Marwell industrial area. “If people are interested in checking it out, I’m pretty excited about it and love showing people the vegetables,” said Bosjabbar.

I don’t think that the climate is going to be much of an issue,” said Bos-Jabbar. “The more local food, the better. The less supply lines, the better. So we do have the advantage of growing throughout the winter.”

Solvest also runs a subscription program where Yukoners can sign up for a weekly supply of fresh vegetables produced in the Whitehorse CropBox. “It’s a weekly pickup time at Yukon Brewing or Baked Café. I like the way it’s working right now because it’s no waste and it’s providing people first-hand fresh greens and herbs that were harvested the morning of,” said Bos-Jabbar. He said that Cilantro and Basil will also soon be available at Wyke’s Your Independent Grocer.

T

he famous White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR) Railway is a busy and beautiful journey through the White Pass of Alaska and the Yukon. Every year, as Alaska and the Yukon emerge from winter, so does the work to make sure these trains can carry tourists safely through avalanche paths and safely along the railway.

Bill Glude, owner-operator of Alaska Avalanche Specialists, based out of Juneau, has been working on the WP&YR each spring, since 2007, ensuring the trains can start on time and safely.

Glude was born on the coast of Maine and wandered to Alaska as soon as he was out of school in 1974. “I’ve been here ever since, with breaks for world travel,” said Glude. “I started learning about snow when I was caught in an avalanche in the Cascade Mountains, while studying Geology at the University of Washington, and narrowly escaped going over a cliff and down a gully that I later found out had killed everyone who was carried there by slides. I was lucky to survive!”

Often, many who work in the industry have at one point experienced avalanches, and, after his near-death experience by ava-

lanche, Glude began a lifelong relationship in understanding, managing and educating about avalanches. “It happened that Dr. Ed LaChapelle, one of the pioneer avalanche researchers in North America, was teaching at my university,” Glude recalls. “I latched onto him, took every snow-related course he taught, and worked for him on research projects.”

When he arrived in Alaska, after college, Glude realized that he knew little about the varied climate, terrain and snowpacks of the North. “So I followed old guys around, learning from them,” he said. “By the mid-1970s, I had started a backcountry ski-guiding business. Along with most of the guides and rescue-team members, I took the first Level 1 avalanche course offered in Alaska, in 1976.

The teachers met with a group of us afterwards, explained that they could not travel enough to address the need for avalanche education in Alaska, and offered to help train us to teach the courses ourselves.”

So that is how Glude and his friend and park ranger, Doug Fesler, started the Alaska Avalanche School, in 1978, as an educational program through Alaska State Parks. For the next 12 years,

Glude started working for the WP&YR in 2007 as a specialist, at first just doing an annual evaluation. Now he does a full twomonth program involving daily fieldwork and forecasting, training crews and doing helicopter blasting missions two to five times each spring.

“Our crews usually start annual snow removal around April 1, to have the railroad open for the first cruise ships on about May 1,” said Glude. “I sometimes show up a couple weeks early to do pre-startup blasting and fieldwork, or for special construction projects. The highest and most-shaded starting zones have put large slides on the

tracks in late May, well into our passenger-carrying season, so I usually work until a final blasting mission around that time confirms that there is not much snow left to slide on them.”

It may not be unique, as there are mountain railroads and highways worldwide that have similar problems and similar programs.

“Most of what we do follows industry standards and tried-andtrue methods. Most of our time is spent in the field observing and evaluating conditions so we can time the missions appropriately and do our daily weather and avalanche forecasts,” said Glude. “We are innovating on the ice management, though. No one really has a good method for predicting, preventing, melting or releasing water [sourced] ice that

falls off rock slabs ... so we are experimenting.”

Glude is a professional member of the American Avalanche Association and a certified avalanche instructor. He also spends much of the year working in Japan on avalanche education, when he’s not in Juneau or Skagway.

For blasting work on the railroad, crews assemble various 5- to 25-kilogram charges, in several configurations depending on their intended use, and then deliver them to the starting zones from a low-hovering helicopter with the doors removed and the crew securely harnessed. Charges have two-metre fuses with about a four-and-a-half-minute burn time and are double-capped and fused to eliminate duds. They drop two to four charges per pass, timing them carefully with dual stopwatches, then fly away to observe from a distance when their predetermined time limit is reached.

They also have smaller paths that they can ski cut* to release slides, or can do belayed cornice drops onto paths to release the slides at times suitable for their schedule. Belayed cornice drops are going out and jumping on the cornice while on belay to get it to release; removing it and any instability on the slope below. Sometimes it will require shovelling or using a rope to help cut it loose. *Ski cutting involves purposefully trying to trigger a snow slope with your skis and is highly dangerous, as the skier (if inexperienced or unlucky) can be pulled into the avalanche they are triggering.

The annual explosives order (enough to have on hand for a high-use winter) is about 2,000 kilograms.

Innovative ice management: they have used very large ANFO (ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) charges (25 kg of ANFO; the biggest we can physically drop from a hovering helicopter), in non-skid net bags, which are dropped from a helicopter in low hover, to shatter the ice and make it more absorbent of solar energy. It does not release right away, as snow would, but it promotes melting and releases within a short time. They tried water bombing by using sea water from a helicopter-slung firefighting bucket, and they are likely to try applying environmentally-friendly ice-melting chemicals to key areas, also using a firefighting bucket.

A compilation, by Doug Fesler, of avalanche incidents, in maintenance logs from the 1940s through 1980 (when the railroad operated year-round), lists around 900 events. Their recent records, from 2014 on, add about 100 events to that list.

hen you walk into the newly renovated Elements Hair Studio and Day Spa, you wouldn’t know that its location was formerly a swimming pool. You might even forget that you are in Whitehorse.

Whitehorse’s only true day spa moved into its new space in the Gold Rush Best Western Hotel in February, expanding its size by 1,000 square feet, and it is better than ever.

Ammanda Partridge first opened Elements Esthetics in the Gold Rush in 2008. She requested a meeting with Northern Vision Development and sat down with them to tell them all the reasons why they should let her open a spa in their hotel. And then 10 years later she marched back into their office and told them why she thought they should let her expand and grow for Elements’ 10year anniversary. Luckily for her, they were kind enough to support her idea—twice.

In their new space, Elements is able to offer each service in its own room. There are dedicated spaces for pedicures, manicures, the hair salon, as well as three treatment rooms, an aromatherapy steam shower and an amazingly comfy couch where you can sit, relax and wait for your nails to dry or for colour to set in. The pedicure room includes three massage chairs with pipeless jets in the pedicure basin. You can sip a glass of prosecco or wine while you catch up with your girlfriends, or just escape the kids for a few hours since Elements is fully licensed.

One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is Element’s exceptional attention to the quality of service that they give to each and every client. Clients have mentioned

that their favourite things about this spa are the private service rooms, the quiet relaxed atmosphere and attention to small details. I can vouch for that—I recall a time when I was receiving a pedicure and the esthetician’s daughter, who was about 12 years old at the time, offered me a luxurious hand massage. Pure heaven.

hether it’s for the annual bike race or a fishing holiday, Yukoners love Haines. The small southeast-Alaska port is a special destination for many.

Come fall, the arrival of thousands of American Bald Eagles, in the nearby Chilkat River Valley, offers another reason to visit. From October to January, between two- and four-thousand bald eagles will gather from around the Pacific Northwest in the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, not far from Haines. The eagles are drawn to the vast river flats to gorge on late-spawning chum and coho salmon and to enjoy the warmer water of the natural reservoir that forms there. In recent years, mining exploration north of Haines has generated new attention to the Chilkat River ecosystem and its people.

Each November, the American Bald Eagle Foundation, in Haines, holds an annual festival to help celebrate the unique and amazing eagle gathering. This year’s 24th festival, from November 7-10, will explore the theme “A Bird’s Eye View.” The diverse program features all-ages events and storytelling, supported by a var-

Art- and music-focused activities are also planned as “different mediums for telling stories of our world,” Dickerson said.

The festival will start with a dinner at the Haines Borough Public School, followed by an art bazaar and cultural evening. Local and Tlingit speakers will share their stories, knowledge and perspectives on birds. Festival guests will also have the chance to share their own bird stories at a later event.

Keynote speaker Jason Beale, a certified avian trainer and avid birder from Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, in Pennsylvania, is slated to discuss “Naturiotism” (the link between patriotism and nature) on Thursday. Film aficionados can attend the wild and scenic Takshanuk Film Festival on Friday night, which will feature 12 “mini-films,” with a seafood dinner organized by the Takshanuk Watershed Council.

The Alaska Bald Eagle Festival Banquet, on Saturday, will be held

for the first time at Harriet Hall at the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds. “It’s a gorgeous venue.

We’re excited to be partnering with the fairground officials,” Dickerson noted.

Regular Foundation programming will continue throughout the festival, with new aviaries designed to support more bird viewing on-site (the Foundation has a raptor centre and also serves as a natural museum).

A great way to see the impressive eagle congregation, one of the largest in North America, is to visit sections of the preserve near the Haines Highway. The shallow river channels and giant riverside cottonwood trees host eagles galore.

There are four designated pullouts between miles 18 and 21, as well as interpretive signage, a viewing platform and a two-mile riverside trail. Visitor guidelines are posted to ensure low-impact eagle-watching. A shuttle will be available twice daily to these main eagle-viewing areas and also stops at the impressive Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center, built in

2016 in the Tlingit village of Klukwan.

The centre is hosting an exciting “Flight to Freedom” eagle release on November 10, with birds from an Anchorage-based rehabilitation centre (if you want to be involved in the release, you can bid for the experience during the fundraising auction held just prior to the event).

The festival attracts about 150–200 locals and visitors from outside of Alaska, each year. The number of Yukoners varies each year and depends partly on the weather. “There’s a 50/50 chance there’ll be snow,” Dickerson noted.

These hemp ropes are but one of the products that come from hemp. Another commonly known one is canvas. Did you know that the word canvas comes from the word cannabis? People have been making clothing, canvas, ropes and medicine for 10,000 years out of this and its headline-grabbing sister fibre.

This project has already been expanded, even as this story was being written! Janna Swales and participants of the wreath-making event will now also be creating Remembrance Day wreaths to be laid at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Whitehorse, Dawson City and at Vimy Ridge, France.

On November 3, the Yukon Transportation Museum will be celebrating Klondike history with wreath-making, incorporating ropes that were formerly used on the SS Klondike

hat a history-packed day November 3, 2018, will be at our local Yukon Transportation Museum (YTM). The special activities start at 3 p.m. with creating wreaths from ropes that formerly adorned the Canadian National Historic Site in Whitehorse, our very own SS Klondike sternwheeler that used to ply the waters of the mighty Yukon River between Whitehorse and Dawson City.

The beautiful rope is in two sizes, twisted together of many strands that cannot be easily broken. It was quite a process to figure out how to cut the three-inch-diameter rope to a usable length. It is scratchy, itchy and can give slivers—gloves are definitely suggested when handling.

These ropes are not artefacts, although they have been used on the Klondike. Parks Canada replaces the ropes periodically and, two years ago, they asked the YTM if they would like them for exhibits or programming. They have been on display, and now some will become wreaths under the creative expertise of Janna Swales, executive director of the museum.

I had the privilege of being there as the first prototype was constructed by Janna and an eager, crafty-minded volunteer, Ruth Treskatis. It was fascinating to see the two at work, exchanging lightbulb ideas and aha moments, as they first problem-solved to form the wreath, then pulled decorations from a plastic bag that contained a variety of Christmas decorations.

Janna enthusiastically created a second wreath after her official hours were over that day. She invites you to come and construct and then decorate your own wreath with a piece of the historical rope.

Start thinking, now, about what

your creation will look like—Christmas, Remembrance Day … It’s versatile, so you can keep it on display all year as the seasons and holidays change … You are welcome to bring your own decorations: ribbons, pine cones, ornaments … The opportunities to personalize are endless.

There will be all of the help, support, guidance and even inspiration that day to empower you to leave with your own created wreath. All tools and supplies will be provided, including gloves, if you don’t bring your own.

Wreath-making is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. on November 3. More details are available on https://goytm.ca, or you can call the YTM at 867-668-4792 or email janna@goytm.ca. Space is limited.

This will be followed by sharing your wreath with the other co-creators while enjoying hors d’oeuvres from 5 to 6 p.m.

In addition, Ione Christensen, former Yukon senator, commissioner, and current president of the Whitehorse chapter of the Yukon Order of Pioneers-Ladies’ Auxiliary, and inspiring history buff, will be giving a talk, from 6 to 7 p.m., on her reminiscences of growing up with Yukon steamers. This is open to all. Please pre-register, as there is limited seating, although larger capacity than for the wreath-making. There is a nominal fee for this event. There will also be a public viewing of the wreaths. Hope to see you there.

Ulrike Wohlfarth Levins recently returned to Whitehorse. She is a wordsmith and freelance writer who enjoys the arts, history and business. As a result of her life experiences, she is actively involved in advocating for change while she helps others.
