f I were to go to Germany, where would I go? There are so many possibilities. I usually have trouble deciding what to order off of a restaurant menu!

I asked some friends and they helped me narrow down the possibilities. Their suggestion? Tour the country in a pretzel shape!

Why not? This way I could discover places I would otherwise never consider.

As I researched these areas, it quickly became clear that seeing all these places in 10 days would result in spending most of my time on trains. I decided it would be best to just take “a bite out of the pretzel” and leave the rest for another time. However, in honour of the original pretzel concept, I will have a pretzel at each stop of the trip and see which place has the best!

Travel

For the travel between cities, I will be using the train system.

Because I will need to travel on six of the 10 days, I will purchase the seven-day First Class Flexi Pass. First class because that will allow me more access to the ICE trains, which are faster. Within the cities themselves I will rely on the public transport system for those places I can’t walk to.

Hotels

The hotels have been found through hotels.com.

Most of the hotels are located close to main train stations.

Day 1 I’ll arrive at Frankfurt Airport at 1 p.m. on Condor Airlines. I’ll travel from the Frankfurt Airport Train Station to the Frankfurt Main Train Station. From there, I’ll walk

This should take me through an upscale shopping area and the area known as Freßgass on Hochstraße: (www.frankfurttourismus.de/en/Media/Attractions/Shopping/Fressgass), which is known for its variety of restaurants and cafés. I’ll discover somewhere to have lunch here. Then it is 13 minutes back to the hotel to drop off any purchases. I’ll then train from the S-Bahn Ostendstr Station to visit the Sommerwerft theatre (www.sommerwerft.de/ en), a music and arts festival being held from July 20 to August 5. On the return trip, I’ll eat at the African Queen Restaurant (http://african-queen-restaurant.de/). I love Ethiopian food!

Day 4 Eat groceries for breakfast at the hotel. I’ll take the tram to the station, to take the train to Cologne, and eat a packed lunch on the train. In Cologne, I’ll walk 10 minutes to Maternushaus and check in, then take a 10-minute walk to visit the Cologne Cathedral and surrounding area. Next is a 10-minute walk to the Merzenich Backereien to try the nugatbretzel, which is recommended on tripadvisor.com.

Another 9-minute walk from the cathedral to the Dufthaus 4711 (House of Fragrances). Take the fragrance workshop (38 EUR) to create my own fragrance. It’s a 10-minute walk to Brauhause Sion, for dinner in the Alter Markt area. I’ll have the Saurbraten. Day 3 Eat breakfast at the Hotel Monopol before checking out and taking the train to Bielefeld. I’ll walk from there to the Krispy Kebab for lunch. It’s a farther 10-minute walk to the Arcadia Hotel Bielefeld, and If not yet 2 p.m., I’ll ask if can leave my bag and check in later. I’ll walk the 15 minutes to Sparrenberg Castle Open, which is 2 EUR to go up the tower. On returning to the hotel, I’ll stop by a bakery and grocery store a few blocks away to buy a

Day 6 Relax this morning and maybe take a trip to a local supermarket.

I’ll visit the Ritter Sport Factory in Waldenbuch, either by bus or, likely, Susanne will drive. We’ll have lunch at the Ritter Sport Café and buy chocolate gifts for friends and family back home—a one-stop souvenir shop! I have heard my friend Susanne, who suggested the pretzel trip, talk about how she prefers pretzels from her area to those from Munich. My thought was, Better than Munich? Isn’t Munich the birthplace of the pretzel? Susanne clarified that a Swabian pretzel has skinny arms and a fat belly. That way, as you eat it you get all the variety of texture . It seems Susanne is not alone in her convictions about pretzels. I found an article by Stuttgarter-Zeitung about the Swabian pretzel. It highlights the concerns of the public regarding the beloved pretzel! And so I set out to research the best pretzel in Stuttgart. ectly to the train station after the trip to Lichtenstein Castle.

We’ll drive 30 minutes to hike the paths around the castle and take a tour, and perhaps take a picnic lunch (Adult Entrance = 10 EUR). I’ll be at Tübingen Hbf in time to catch the train at 3:15 p.m. for the journey to Munich.

I’ll arrive and walk four minutes to Wombats City Hostel, to check in and settle in for the night.

Day 8 Breakfast at the hostel. Visit the Museum of Technology (12 EUR), a 15-minute walk and tram.

It’s an 11-minute walk to Viktualienmarkt, to buy some fruit and food for later and choose from the many options in the area for lunch. I’ll walk a few minutes farther to the Bäckerei Müller and try a pretzel.

Two places are said to have the best pretzels in Munich, and I think I’ll need to go to both spots.

I’ll walk back (seven minutes) to

the hostel and drop off purchases from Viktualienmarkt. Then a 15-minute walk and tram to Neue Pinakothek, via the Karlsplatz (Stachus). The Neue Pinakothek (7 EUR) houses art from 19th-century artists, such as Manet, Monet, van Gogh, and Cézanne. I’ll walk 10 minutes to Der verrückte Eismacher (the crazy ice maker) to try some interesting ice cream flavours, and return to Pinakothek to take the tram back to Karlsplatz to return to the hostel. If I get hungry, I can make a sandwich from the spoils of Viktualienmarkt.

Day 9 Eat breakfast at the hostel and then take the train to the Residence Museum. A combo ticket (13 EUR) allows entrance to the Residenz, the Treasury and Cuvilliés Theatre. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Marienplatz, and if I get there by 11 a.m. or 12 p.m., I will see the cuckoo clock go off.

I’ll go to Rischart Café for lunch

and a pretzel.

From the Marienplatz, it is a 25-minute walk to Pinakothek der Moderne (10 EUR), which has art from the 20th and 21st century.

Next door, the Alte Pinakothek (4 EUR) has art from the 14th to 18th century, including works by Raphael, Leonardo, and Rembrandt.

I’ll tram 15 minutes back to Karlsplatz (Stachus) and walk 15 minutes to Augustiner Klosterwirt for dinner, where perhaps I’ll try the Schweinhaxe, if I am hungry. Then I’ll return to the hostel and pack for my trip the following day.

Day 10 I’ll eat my last breakfast at the hostel and walk four minutes to the Munich Main Train Station to take the train to the Frankfurt Airport. I’ll arrive in plenty of time to check in for the 4 p.m. flight home on Condor Airlines.

Highlights

It is hard to say what the highlights of this particular trip would be. Finding Germany’s best pretzel? While a fun exercise, I don’t think that reaches the top. Making my own fragrance in Cologne would be one of my favourite activities ... but then, the history and art in Munich sound phenomenal! When it comes down to it, I think Munich would have to come in second place.

The opportunity to reconnect with old friends would be the best part of the trip. After all, they were the ones who inspired the pretzel itinerary!

In conclusion …

Having done all of this research, I have come to one conclusion: 10 days in Germany is not enough. I found myself saying things like,”Oh, I need more time in Munich! On the 8th, there is a concert at Schloss Schleissheim” or “Checking out a flea market would be interesting … oh, it is only on Saturday.” This itinerary doesn’t even get me to Berlin or Dresden. I know there are things I would like to do and see there.

There is only one logical conclusion: I will just have to come back!

embers of the Haines Junction Junior Canadian Rangers (JCR) attended the annual JCR National Marksmanship Championship in St. Catharines, Ontario, in early May. In total, 63 rangers from across the country competed in the event held at the Lincoln and Welland Regiment armoury, based in St. Catharines. Junior Ranger Eden Dulac of Haines Junction was the championship winner, narrowly edging out her older brother, Joshua Dulac.

Competitors shot a variety of targets from 10 metres away, including paper, clay and falling plates, as well as digital targets that were specifically used during one contest. The rifle of choice were Daisy air rifles.

started her business, over 20 years ago, it began with filling a need for her own family. She was always looking for quality natural remedies for her two small kids, but found there just weren’t many around.

Living in the bush on Carcross Road, with a strong knowledge of herbs, she began exploring and experimenting with what was growing right in her own backyard.

Gray quickly realized there were at least 40 plants growing on the land.

Her friends and family began asking for her remedies, which led her to try selling her signature Boreal Balm at the Spruce Bog Craft Sale. It was a huge hit and, just like that, her passion became a business.

While the business has evolved in many different—though connected—directions, it has done so organically and in a way that has allowed Gray to bring together her many passions. The workshops and herb walks began because the students showed up.

“People were asking for the teachings,” said Gray. “They wanted to know what I knew and what I was learning. I’m a person … I learn something and I want to share it with everybody.”

This same love of sharing her knowledge led to her books.

“I would hate to leave this planet and not be able to share what I’ve learned in this lifetime—that was the big motivation for writing the book.”

When asked about the most rewarding thing about owning a business, Gray has trouble narrowing it down to just one. She values greatly the impact she is able to have on those that come in contact with her products and offerings—“I love seeing people light up when they find something that’s for them”—and being able to teach others about herbs and remedies that they can then bring into their own lives and families.

“I love when people discover plants, have been walking by them

“It’s been a great journey for the family and for myself personally,” said Gray, who also credits her staff for being “the backbone” of her business and the community for their ongoing support. “The support from the community has been so wonderful and I’m always so grateful for them.”

Gray’s business has evolved and diversified in many ways throughout the years, all while staying true to her original vision and goal of sharing her love and wealth of knowledge, for herbs and plants, with the world.

Gray has grown her business to offer workshops and herb walks, she speaks at gatherings and conferences around the world, has had a show on CBC called “Words on Herbs,” writes for Yukon, North of Ordinary and has written two books, including her award-winning and national bestselling book, The Boreal Herbal: Wild Food and Medicine Plants of the North.

“S

ummertime is RV time—for locals and tourists alike!

Whether you want to rent an RV or you need your own unit repaired, GoNorth is proud to serve you,” said the new GoNorth branch manager, Keith Friendship.

In 2012, GoNorth opened its first car and RV rental station in Canada, which is located in the Centennial Motors building across from the airport. The company itself has been in business since 2001, operating rental stations in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Seattle. GoNorth Whitehorse just moved to a brandnew facility located at 115 Mt. Sima Road.

At the new location, Friendship proudly welcomes customers from Whitehorse and all over the world. “Many of our customers choose GoNorth because we rent 4x4 trucks, SUVs, motorhomes and truck campers with no road restrictions. Driving on gravel roads is permitted,” Friendship states.

“One-way rentals from/to Anchorage, Fairbanks and Seattle are also a big plus.”

In addition to the existing rental business, GoNorth just started offering service and repairs. Alex Kohler, a Red Seal-certified RV technician at GoNorth, explains: “We offer de-winterizing, winteriz-

ing, seal and roof inspections, trailer bearing and brake inspections, pre-purchase inspections, and more. We can also diagnose and repair various types of problems in propane, heating, electrical, water and sewage systems, and more.”

And for those who don’t have room to park their RV at home, GoNorth offers storage in their secure, fenced-in lot.

Friendship loves travelling and RVing. Originally from Quebec, work in the retail industry and for the Canadian Military allowed him to live in and travel to numerous places in Europe and all over Canada. Six years ago, he and his wife moved to Whitehorse to be close to their daughter and grandson.

Friendship enjoyed working in the RV industry in the Yukon. His favourite part of living in the Yukon is the spectacular landscapes and the wildlife.

As an avid motorcyclist, one of his other favourite trips is driving the South Klondike Highway to Skagway. “Passing Emerald Lake, seeing the Carcross grizzlies (mama and three cubs) and the spectacular spring and fall colours makes the ride to Skagway an awesome adventure. Visiting Skagway is a trip back in time. With the wooden sidewalks and the frontier store fronts, [it] makes this a great day trip or stay for the weekend.”

In 2016, Friendship and his wife relocated to the Calgary area—but they were not gone for good. “We loved living in Whitehorse, and we were missing the lifestyle and our family. For me, returning to the

Spring rendezvous in the midnight sun

n June 7, the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR) will host their first spring auction, a must-add for everyone’s calendar. The event will take place at Lumel Studios at 6 p.m. and will feature special guests that you won’t want to miss. It will include a live auction, along with a silent auction to kickstart summer fundraising for the upcoming winter Sourdough Rendezvous.

The spring auction will feature dinner, with entertainment brought to life by the YSR cancan dancers and the Yukon Snowshoe Shufflers, along with a guest appearance by the one and only Queen Lisa. It will also be comprised of original Rendezvous history items, door prizes and a demo from Lumel Studios, the amazing sponsor and host venue for this event.

Rendezvous has some very special auction items in store for this year, which many of us die-hard Rendezvous-goers would be honoured to have. A highlight is the Golden Ticket, a pass that gives the lucky owner backstage access to Rendezvous events during winter 2019.

Another sought-after item to be auctioned is a spot on the cancan bus on Rendezvous Friday. The highest bidder will spend the day with the gorgeous cancan ladies, go where they go, see what they see, get into the bars and venues with them and enjoy the thrill of being with them for a full day of

Other items up for auction, to keep on the look out for, are vintage memorabilia, such as past souvenir programs—some even dating back 50 years.

But the most special prize of the evening (something not even the highest bidder can buy) will be the ability to share past Rendezvous experiences, create fresh ones and to be part of the start of a new spring Rendezvous tradition.

This event hopes to give everyone, including those who have participated (and continue to par-

ticipate) in Rendezvous, a chance to get together with old friends, to reconnect and to meet new, like-minded friends ... all while indulging in a laugh about the good times shared over the years. Rendezvous aims to reunite old alumni while also bringing together the community for a night to remember, with upbeat performances, a fiery demonstration, sensational characters and a chance to reminisce during an auction of past Rendezvous memorabilia and experiences.

The executive director for Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous, Dave Blottner, expressed that Rendezvous is hoping that the auction will be an annual event, as well as an opportunity to meet with Rendezvous alumni, volunteers and other members of the community. He also said that he thinks this

A

s the only gaming café and comic book store in Whitehorse, Titan Gaming and Collectibles is a one-of-a-kind concept North of 60. Founded in 2005 by life-long comic-book lover and avid gamer Shawn Underhill, the space has become a rallying point for a thriving gaming culture in the Yukon.

In 2001 Wizard’s Emporium was the first comic-book store in Whitehorse. “Before that we would have to buy comics from Riverside (Grocery). Wizard’s became our teenage home for a long time,” Underhill said.

Underhill opened Titan after Wizard’s closed. “We needed a home for our community. A place for people to come and hang out.

Looking back on it now I made most of my friends through Wizard’s Emporium; 25 years later we’re still best friends. They still drop by Titan daily. It’s good to see kids forming news friendships in this space, like we did back in the day.”

Up until recently the business was located in the basement of the Hougen’s Mall on Main Street.

In need of room to expand and craving above ground windows, Underhill relocated to 3121 3rd Avenue on the corner of Steele Street.

The new space has a brighter,

less cavernous and more open feel to it than the original basement location. “The natural light really does make a difference,” Underhill said.

He hopes that the public will find the new, brighter atmosphere of the place welcoming. “Don’t be intimidated to drop by, it’s an inclusive community space.”

Expanding into the new space has meant an expansion of staff and capacity, too. The new events manager Chris Vainio devoted his time to organizing activities such as Katan and Pokemon tournaments.

As part of his business development, Underhill revamped his kitchen offerings and acquired a liquor license. “This has never caused any problem and Pokemon moms like to drink wine,” Underhill laughed.

“Our older clients sometimes like to have a beer with their meal… I’m really excited about the new menus, too... Since Mike Dibbs moved over from Bailey’s we’ve expanded our food options and it’s really brought the restaurant up to a new level. Since the move we’ve noticed better traffic flow of customers, and more people are coming here for lunch than before.”

Underhill said that his best memories come from growing com-

munity and bonding activities with fellow gamers. “This has always been a really a great place for meeting people. One time a couple got engaged at Titan.”

Building community is an important part of his business model, too. “Being in the North you have to diversify and do a lot of things.

It’s a hard industry to succeed in.

Online shopping through Amazon is killing retail, but people who support us buy from us anyway. There’s real longevity in the community aspect of the business.”

Their biggest annual event of the year happened on May 5: Free Comic Book Day. Everyone who shows up gets three free comicbooks. There were cosplayers dressed up as Deadpool, Iron Man and Dr. Strange and kids got their pictures taken with the superheroes.

ience, packaged and completely separated from whence it came.

But for many people, salmon is a cultural, social and economic base from which their lives move forward, and the fall of salmon populations is putting those in peril. In his book Kings of the Yukon, Adam Weymouth canoes the Yukon River from McNeil Lake to the Bering Sea, and observes what is happening to these amazing fish and what repercussions their decline is having on the people who depend on them.

“The history of the salmon is the history of this land,” said Weymouth in the opening chapter. From geological adaptation, cultural tradition, an interdependent ecosystem, to modern industry, much relies on the health of the Yukon River salmon.

It is a place where “the king” (to take the American term for chinook) was life for thousands of years, but it’s no longer so.

Within living memory, the number of fish returning have steadily declined, and within a few generations, an astounding population has been decimated.

But it’s not that they changed … we did. Between a complex international fishing industry and changes in global market demand, environmental standards, fishing techniques, commercial permits and laws regarding land claims and Indigenous rights, it

seems the salmon face as much peril in the bureaucratic migration they’re on as they do in the geographical one.

Along his voyage, the author stops over with the characters who make this frontier land their home; people who live intimately tied to a river that brings and takes life on its own terms.

In the book’s pages, Weymouth conveys an excellent sense of the wildness here. His words heighten the reader’s senses, so they, too, can smell the summer spruce, see the stained-glass scales of the fish and the sharp red of its flesh, and understand the hearty thrum of the river and the life it keeps in its belly.

Part river quest, part social observation, part scientific analysis, in Kings of the Yukon, Weymouth handles a complex discussion with care, all the while exploring the wonder of a fascinating species and its interconnected nature to every place it passes.

Whether we’re on the banks of the Yukon or not, readers are asked to examine what it means to be a steward of the land. And for that reminder—of how precarious and interdependent life can be—I hope this book finds a large audience, for those at home and also beyond.

The Yukon landscape

On finding trees and shrubs that thrive in the Yukon’s climate and soils

I

used to focus solely on edible plants, wild or cultivated. The only flowers, trees and shrubs that interested me were those that could contribute to a meal. If they looked nice—bonus. When my partner, John, began introducing me to the landscaping plants he loves, I admit I was sceptical. Why not have berry bushes instead of cotoneasters? Why have flowering trees when you could have ones that bear fruit?

Perhaps it’s maturity or some riff on Maslow (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs), but I have been swayed.

As I take a break from potting up tomatoes and cabbages, or pause at the edge of the apple house, I find myself stopped short by the arc of an ash branch that sweeps just so, or the way light filters through the delicate new leaves of a burr oak.

One of the things that led to my conversion was the plain good sense of discovering and disseminating trees and shrubs that are suited to, and even originate in, the Yukon. It drives me bonkers to see a picturesque Yukon town planted with the same generic menu of plants found in so many cities across temperate North America. We have a lot of beautiful, unique flora in the Yukon— Why not celebrate it?

One thing that thrives up here is the humble spruce tree. Now

before you shake your heads, let me clarify: I’m not talking about just any ol’ spruce tree. Those of you who have frequented garden centres and nurseries might be familiar with albertiana spruce, mugo pines or pendula firs. These varieties are clones that each originated from a genetic, often dwarf, anomaly in the wild.

The good news is, we are rich in anomalous spruce trees! Have you ever seen a witch’s broom? They show the type of tight, clustered growth we look for when hunting for wild specimens. We take cuttings from similar brooms that are healthy and green, which is similar to harvesting a few spruce tips in that it doesn’t damage the tree.

Brooms can be the size and shape of basketballs, cones or muffins— some even cascade like a waterfall. The distinguishing feature they share is that their growth is slower than that of the rest of the tree; that is the “dwarf” character that makes them appropriate for yards where a full-size conifer would be too large.

You never know what the growth will be like when brought into cultivation, though, and it takes many years of watching and waiting to learn which trees will be worth propagating and introducing to others (10 years is the industry standard).

John began experimenting with dwarf spruce and pine trees in

2002, and of the roughly 120 specimens collected over the years (including an exciting new 15 this year!), a solid dozen are proving to be consistent and delightful, with many others still in trials. They vary in their degree of dwarfism; at five years old, the cluster of branches on a miniature may be the size of an orange, that of a dwarf soccer ball, and a semi-dwarf might reach to your waist.

Their needles are a myriad of greens and blues; the bark—reds, oranges and browns; the buds—golden or even burgundy. People often ask if the miniatures are bonsai, with their tight growth floating on a stalk, or if we prune our trees to shape. The answer is no. Unlike yew or boxwood, which are commonly used like a carver’s block of snow in the southlands, dwarf conifers are like crystals of frost: they evolve slowly into unique and beautiful shapes of their own accord. In fact, they require very little maintenance and can even be container-grown if the roots are protected in the winter.

Selecting landscape trees that are born of the Yukon boreal is a way to connect your personal space to the broader landscape.

We’re trying out new plants, which means subjecting them to a rigorous doubleheader test of a Klondike-winter and Dawson-summer day length.

Those that prove adaptable and hardy become our special friends, the ones we want to share with other plant lovers. These include varieties of mountain ash, maydays and Schubert cherries, ash and amur maples.

And I’d be caught out if I didn’t also mention our “pets” (trees that don’t really belong here but are sooo pretty that we haul them in and out of root cellars in giant pots, just to see them bud out in the spring). Who doesn’t love chestnuts, oaks and maples? Or figs and grapes, for that matter … Did I mention I’m still sometimes in it for the food?

Cartridges over 100 years old and still kicking

E

ven shooters in their 20s have had cartridges invented, failed to catch on, and disappeared in their lifetimes. Not so with the six I’ll mention in this short article. These cartridges are still quite popular throughout the world and that certainly includes hunting in the Yukon.

The youngest is the .375 Holland and Holland Magnum, which is popular among bison, moose and bear hunters in the Yukon. It was introduced in England in 1912, making it the youngest in the group at 106 years old.

It is also the minimum cartridge allowed for hunting “the big five” in Africa. In the hands of a competent hand-loader, this cartridge is extremely versatile. Most popular loadings are in 270 and 300 grain bullets.

Next is the 30.06 Springfield, which was produced as a U.S. military cartridge in 1906, making it 112 years old, and it is likely among the most popular cartridge in the world.

Outpaced only slightly by the hard recoiling 30 calibre magnums, the 30.06 is still more than adequate for any North American big game animal with the multitude of bullet choices available for the hand-loader and also in factory loads.

Finally the 145-year-old classic 45-70 Government was created in 1873 and was originally a black powder cartridge, which was changed to use smokeless powder when it became available.

Until recently, the only factory loads available were in 300 and 405 grains, which were loaded down to the original ballistics. Now there are a number of modern high energy loadings that have flattened out the rainbow trajectory of the old loads and also increased velocity and energy levels to match and even outdo many modern cartridges. These modern loads should only be used in modern firearms, which are designed for those pressure levels.

There are other old classics out there, but these will likely be in use forever.

Bullet cartridges have come and gone, but some have stood the test of time

PHOTO: Pixabay Third youngest at 123 years old is the 30.30 Winchester, which became famous in the iconic lever action Model 94 Winchester. This U.S. cartridge is currently available in factory loads of 150 and 170 grains.

In the Yukon, this cartridge is more than adequate for caribou and black bear, provided the shooter accepts that it is not a long range cartridge either in power or accuracy. It is more commonly used in the whitetail deer woods of eastern Canada and the U.S.A.

Similar to the 30.06 Springfield, these next two started off as successful military cartridges, which proved to be very adaptable to the field for hunting.

The 7 x 57 (aka 7mm Mauser) invented in 1892 (125 years old) is similar in ballistics to the venerable .270 Winchester, but allowed for slightly heavier bullets to be used. It’s popularity was enhanced by the availability of thousands of Mauser rifles sold worldwide as military surplus.

At 126 years old, the 1891 invented 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser – commonly referred to as the 6.5 Swede – has always been somewhat popular, but tended to be underrated in the U.S. Now with five or six newer 6.5s on the market, this cartridge is enjoying a bit of a popularity surge with the fairly recent acceptance that 6.5s are extremely accurate.

1 egg 14 Graham wafers 1/4 tsp. flavouring 2 tsp. soft butter 2 tbsp. fruit juice 1 cup icing sugar ½ can cocoanut ¼ tsp. salt 2 sq. unsweetened chocolate or 5 level tsp. cocoa Cream butter and sugar, add salt, chocolate (melted) and egg. Stir in flavouring and crumbs. Shape into 1 inch balls. Dip in fruit juice.

Roll in coconut. Place on tray.

Keep refrigerated. Makes 25 balls.

ANGEL CAKE 6 eggs separated 1-1/2 cups. sugar ½ cup water 1 cup flour 1 tsp. cream of tartar ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla Cook sugar and water to soft ball stage. Pour slowly into well beaten egg whites. Continue beating until mixture stands in peaks. Beat egg yolks until thick and lemon colour.

Add white mixtures. Sift flour salt cream of tartar and fold into egg mixture. Add vanilla. Bake in ungreased tube pan for 1 to 1 and a quarter hours at 250 degrees.

RAISIN PECAN CAKE 2 eggs 1 tsp. Cinnamon 1 cup seedless raisins ½ cup butter 1 -2/3 cup flour (all purpose) 1 cup brown sugar 2-1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. vanilla ¼ tsp. soda, salt and all spice 2-1/2 cup chopped pecans 2 cups boiling water

Simmer, covered, raisins in water for 15 minutes. Drain and save ½ cup of the liquid. Cool.

Cream butter, blend in sugar,

add eggs and vanilla, Add liquid and dry ingredients.

Fold in raisins and nuts. Bake in 8 inch pan for 45 minutes at 350 F. BUTTER CINNAMON ICING - sift together 2 cups icing sugar, ½ tsp. cinnamon, and a few grains Of salt. Blend in ¼ cup. Blend in ¼ cup butter and 2 tbls. hot cream.

Add ½ tsp. vanilla.

BANANA CAKE 2 eggs 1-1/2 cup flour 1 cup mashed potatoes 1 tsp. soda 1 tsp. vanilla 1/8 tsp salt ½ cup buttermilk ½ cup shortening ½ cup chopped walnuts 1-1/2 cup sugar Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs and beat. Mix in bananas and vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk.

Fold in nuts. Bake in square or layer pans at 350 degrees.

Finding the keys to safer camping Exploring new ways to manage human-bear interactions at Congdon Creek Campground

n the Canada Day long weekend in 2012, the Congdon Creek Campground, located on the shore of Kluane Lake near Burwash Landing, played host to a furry teenaged visitor.

A medium-sized grizzly found its way into the campground and proceeded to lounge around in the central meadow, feeding on the tasty flowers. Once the animal had its fill, it took a nap on the children’s slide nearby.

This visit closed the campground on one of the busiest weekends of the summer. In an area with a long history of human-bear interaction—so much so that tenting at the campground had been banned—this was a tipping point.

In 2013, Yukon College partnered with Yukon Parks to explore solutions that would work for both the bears, who are native to the area, and for people who want to camp safely. Scott Gilbert, a Renewable Resources management instructor and former Kluane Lakearea resident, led the charge.

“Students have the opportunity to do some practical research to try and contribute to long-range sustainability,” Gilbert said. “Students enjoy getting out of the classroom and exploring these types of questions, especially when you’re not sure what the results will be.”

Throughout the first few years of the project, the approach relied on hard labour and brute force to remove two types of plants. Gilbert and his students worked on eliminating the natural attractants in and around the campground, such as soapberry (Shepherdia Canadensis) bushes and locoweed (Oxytropis campestris) vegetation—a local yellow weed packed with nitrogen and often found in

gravelled areas along Yukon highways.

“We’ve also been using a series of game cameras,” Gilbert said.

“So, we know that bears continue to use the area, but we haven’t found any bears feeding inside the campground.”

Weeding and watching certainly helped, but it didn’t solve all of the problems. Tenting was still banned.

In 2017, Renewable Resources management student Brandon Drost, under the mentorship of Gilbert and in partnership with Yukon Parks, began a new approach to the issue. He started to explore whether the installation of an electric fence could allow tent users to return to the campground.

“We know that bear fences work,” Drost said. “My research focuses on evaluating the public’s

experience and perception of the fence … will tenters like to use it and use it safely, or will we end up just having people not like it and tent outside the fence?”

Drost asked users to answer survey questions about their experience in the campground, such as: Did they tent inside the fence?

What was the experience like?

And, did they feel more comfortable inside the fence, as opposed to at another campsite?

From July to September 2017, 56 users answered the survey. Of those responses, 96 per cent used the tenting enclosure, 87 per cent found it was a satisfactory experience, and 82 per cent felt more secure.

Overall, both Drost and Gilbert viewed the fence as a success.

With a few small changes in future years, such as a gate that’s easier to lock, a closer outhouse and grey water facilities, the electric enclosure could continue to be used at the campground, allowing tenters to return to Congdon Creek.

This trial project may also be used as a framework for future management decisions in similar areas frequented by bears.

In addition to the mentorship and instruction from Gilbert, Drost also received a $5,000 Northern Residents Award from the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies—to help complete the project. This research was also supported through the Yukon College and Polar Knowledge Canada research funds.

Being in the same room as internationally recognized researchers was an eye-opening experience for him. “It was an amazing experience, especially for someone like me who is just starting out in a research career.”

Meanwhile, Drost is in the process of finishing his Renewable Resource Management diploma.

Next, he plans to transfer to the Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Northern Conservation Sciences through Yukon College and the University of Alberta.

“I am interested in the environment, in general.” Drost said. “I like finding practical ways that we can reduce our impact on our ecosystem and come up with options for reducing human-animal conflict, and this research opportunity through Yukon College definitely allowed me to explore my interests.”

Kluane’s ‘not-sosecret’ Ice Cave When it’s -40 C, what better way to spend a Sunday than to explore Kluane National Park and its ice cave

I

t was 6:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning in Whitehorse as my friend Nicole pulled into my driveway in her large black pickup truck. I threw my rucksack and snowshoes onto the back seat and we started our venture on the icy, dark Alaska Highway towards Haines Junction.

We slowed down as we spotted elk along the sides of the highway, visible only from a distance as the high-beam headlights danced off their eyes. I was certainly glad I wasn’t driving as I don’t have enough Canadian driving experi-

ence for the varying difficulties of ice and wildlife.

We continued our drive eastward with the dawn’s light, in the rearview mirror, slowly creeping and changing the black sky to hues of orange and pink. Once we had driven past Haines Junction, we turned onto the highway leading to mainland Alaska, watching the GPS to pinpoint the “hidden” starting point of the trail.

We arrived at an obvious pullout that had been specially ploughed out of the highway at the trailhead, and to numerous

amounts of flagging tape. We began to wonder how much this was actually a “secret cave” anymore.

We prepared our gear and equipment. It was -40 C and our ice-frosted hair and eyelashes were immediately evident. We headed into the brush of trees and onto an open, hard-packed and tracked trail. We headed along the trail with the clearly visible, white Kluane National Park peaks in the near distance and a bright full moon in front of us.

We walked for an hour and the sun finally made its way over the peaks as the moon fell asleep behind the mountains. The false sense of warmth was a welcome feeling. However, as we ventured farther along the trail, we ended up on the north aspect, in the creek’s gully and hidden from the sun.

The hike was challenging as the extreme cold required constant face covering, which resulted in difficulty breathing. Although it is a small incline, the air was cold and brutal on our lungs, muscles

Unable to understand how nature can build such an incredible structure and that there are so many different colours for blue, we ventured farther to the other side of the ice cave and glanced back at the sun-kissed mountains in the distance.

The freezing temperatures finally caught up to us as our adrenalin subsided, so we decided to head back down to get warm.

Snowshoes off, we bade farewell as we hiked down in the sunshine.

Our first expedition in -40 C had proved fruitful but exhausting. Whether or not the cave is a secret is debatable, but it certainly is a journey worth making.

As we drew closer to the mountains, we wondered how much farther this arduous journey would be ... How would we spot the cave? Maybe it’s a secret because it’s tucked and hidden away.

After two and a half hours of snowshoeing in the cold shade, the higher altitude was making it increasingly difficult. The cracks and whomps from the frozen creek would sent shudders down our spines. In some places we could hear the creek pushing through the frozen wilderness, showing nature’s incredible determination to withstand the elements.

Suddenly we looked up and delight entered our spirits as we spotted a small view of the cave’s opening. “We found it!” one of our group yelled. Our renewed energies at almost accomplishing the trail gave us strength to continue on. We reached the knoll and the ice cave’s mouth opened up with textured blue enchantment.
