arcelle Dubé has written the fifth novel of her Mendenhall Mystery Series titled The Forsaken Men. It´s published by the author under her own imprint Falcon Ridge Publishing. Her Mendenhall isn’t a subdivision of Whitehorse, but rather a fictive place in Manitoba.

“I chose Manitoba because I lived there for a while and really liked it, so I felt I could incorporate some realistic details and emotions into the story,” Dubé said.

Her main character, Mendenhall’s chief of police, Kate Williams, is tired of the long winter and longing for spring. When someone steals a tank of bull semen from a local vet, the mystery begins. She has to investigate a series of thefts and vandalism at a construction site and figure out her relationship with Bert, her exboyfriend.

The characters in the book are well-developed; for example, Rob McKell, Kate´s deputy chief, who

Marcelle Dubé is an award-winning Yukon author who also writes under the pen name of Emma Faraday almost died in a car accident in the last book, is back on-board and helps Kate with investigating.

Kate Williams has to overcome some obstacles during the series ... becoming chief of police in a department that didn´t want her, for instance. “She needed to have the resourcefulness to meet those challenges. At the same time, she had to have some flaws or she wouldn’t be believable. I think Kate turned out well.

“I like her a lot and it looks like other people like her, too.” Dubé said about her main character, then she adds, “Kate Williams is the kind of smart, strong, capable woman I want to be when I grow up.”

Dubé worked as a military police officer for four years in Mani-

toba, so she could use a lot of knowledge from her experience.

On top of that, she did research on police work at the RCMP in Whitehorse.

“I even got to go on a ride along! The fire marshal and the emergency management planning coordinator both patiently answered all of my hypothetical questions with minimal rolling of the eyes.”

Dubé has written 12 novels, mainly mystery, but also science fiction and a book of short stories.

Will there be a sixth book in the series?

“I have no idea. Honestly, I thought that book four, The Untethered Woman, would be my

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Oland

Campfire recipes: steak tacos

T

acos are ideal for camping because you don’t really need a plate or utensils to eat them. And if you mix the sauce before you leave, there’s really minimal prep for your taco camping feast. You could even buy a bag of pre-sliced coleslaw mix and have it do a bit of double duty on your trip.

If you’ve got any bison steaks from this season’s hunt, this is a great place to use them; if not, try out a beef flank steak from the grocery store and make sure to slice the meat against the grain for optimal tenderness. This simple sauce is also excellent on chicken or even brushed on hot dogs or burgers.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

2 steaks, about 1 pound each Salt and pepper, to taste 2 Tbsp hoisin sauce 1 tsp sriracha 1 Tbsp oyster sauce Sliced scallions, to garnish Chopped cilantro, to garnish Sliced cabbage, to garnish 1 package small tortillas

Build a fire and let it burn down until you have a few flames and a solid bed of coals. Place grill over coals and let the grill heat up for a few minutes. Season the steak with salt and pepper. Mix together hoisin, sriracha, and oyster sauce.

Place the steaks on the grill and sear until just beginning to brown, then flip and brush with sauce. Flip again and let the sauce caramelize on the grill. Cook until desired doneness—about 3 minutes per side for a medium-rare steak. Remove from the grill and brush with sauce.

and demand, made a decision in July and August to try it out by attending what they could. Her partner flew for work, so they couldn’t make it all the time.

“We were hooked in by being able to drop in and see if it worked,” Young said. “She was busy with work, so she sold to me and I was able to get ready for the next summer.”

That model has succeeded and has encouraged a diverse range of products to be shared each summer. As of early May, there were already 35 to 40 vendors registered for the market, and Riveros noted that many of the regular vendors had still not signed up.

“For booth space, about 25 per cent are new,” she said. “We have about 150 members who are all vendors, so I expect a mad dash to sign up.”

While originally conceived as a farmers market by founders Tom and Simone Rudge, the event has grown to host a very creative mix of products. Some of the more unique that have appeared over the years include smoothies that are made by riding a bike, clocks made out of popsicle sticks, refurbished axe handles by St. Elias Axes, and locally foraged spice mixes to get that Yukon flavouring in your next meal. Riveros noted that people are often pitching an idea they’ve seen elsewhere, that hasn’t been done in the Yukon yet.

They have an interest to make something they’ve seen at a farmers market down south and bring it here, she explained.

In addition to the crafters, the

It’s not uncommon to find these making their way into some of the food vendors offerings. In fact, the market society will be encouraging this cooperation, according to Ferland.

“There will be a sandwich board by each food vendor, listing what local food is being used,” she explained.

That local sourcing goes a long way towards the spirit of the market. They believe in a reduced impact with local sourcing and community support. Riveros noted that the essence of their mandate is to be local and to have valueadded products that are grown, raised, harvested or crafted.

That spirit made partnering with Zero Waste Yukon a natural step and Riveros explained that they made a presentation at the recent conference.

“We shared our initiative to become zero waste in the future,” she said. “We are working with Zero Waste Yukon and tracking how well we sort. We’re auditing.

“We are also sorting better in our office. It’s a priority, and we’re working with vendors to identify zero waste compostable alternatives and providing incentives to use.”

The market is quickly growing.

When they first moved to Shipyards Park, the market was located in the parking lot. It has since moved to the oval and has plenty of space to expand out the back, into the park. However, that growth hasn’t come without challenges that they

are working to resolve. New vendors and expansion are putting a strain on the access to power for those looking to use it on-site.

“We do have problems with access to electricity,” Riveros said.

“We’ve been asking vendors for feedback and identified it as a challenge to address. They want reliable access to electricity.”

The society just recently held their Annual General Meeting and the same eight board members and executive director are returning for the second year in a row. They meet monthly to plan and organize the markets and are always looking for more volunteers. The society generates just over half of their operating revenue through memberships and market booth rentals, but the long term support from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership program provides 30 per cent of their operating costs.

According to Riveros, they continue to explore ways to cover the remaining funding need to deliver our flagship markets this year.

Faulkner’s plane was restored by the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin in the 1990s. He has always had an interest in antique, golden-era aircraft.

“It’s a pretty cool, old machine built in 1943,” Faulkner said. “It was built for the U.S. Navy as a VIP transport.

“It’s good with Alkan [Air] set up to train people.”

The free flights will depart from Alkan Air, and Faulkner encourages all participants to sign up in advance. “The biggest thing is to pre-register,” Faulkner said.

“Kids have to have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver.”

The Transportation Museum has been hosting an annual spring barbecue for several years. It provides them an opportunity to highlight their summer season programming. Students at Leaping Feats Creative Danceworks and the Heart of Riverdale are hard at work readying their material for a spectacular year-end performance

T

he end of the school year is always an exciting time, but students of Leaping Feats Creative Danceworks and the Heart of Riverdale have something else to look forward to in addition to being free from teachers and homework.

The upcoming edition of Leaping Feats’ annual year-end dance show, Dancing Through Life 2018, will be taking place over four nights, with one show per day from May 31 until June 3. There will be some variations between each show, but all four will feature this year’s graduating students, as is tradition in the Dancing Through Life performances.

There is a sense of community that has been built amongst the dancers who have shared rehearsal spaces and stages for years. The Dancing Through Life show, while it is a celebration of how far the students have come and what they’ve accomplished, is also a bittersweet occasion, as many of them will be dancing together for the last time.

“I’ve been dancing with most of the girls I’m graduating with since the beginning and formed some unbreakable friendships,” says Yovana Cooper, a grade 12 student who has been dancing

since she was three years old. “It hasn’t really hit me yet that we’ll all be doing different things next year and going in all different directions.”

Preparations for this show go back all the way to last November when the dances began being choreographed. The process of putting together such a spectacle is a very busy and involved one, according to some of the dancers.

Maeve McManus is another grad student who will be featured in this year’s performances.

“There are hundreds of people involved in all four shows, including our dance teachers, the dancers and our parents,” says McManus. “For the ballet production, our teacher Sachi handmade the costumes, so a lot of work was put into that aspect as well.”

Dancing Through Life 2018 will showcase productions of the BFG, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Big Chances in the Big Apple. The students of Leaping Feats Creative Danceworks and the Heart of Riverdale have been working diligently and restlessly preparing to make this year’s string of shows unique, captivat-

ing and unforgettable.

The first show is on Thursday May 31 at 7 p.m., followed by another evening performance on Friday June 1, also at 7 p.m. Saturday June 2 will have an afternoon show at 1 p.m. and the final performance will be on Sunday June 3 at 5 p.m. The shows will take place at the Yukon Arts Centre.

Students from all grades will take part in the four shows, and a variety of dance types, ranging from ballet to breakdance will be presented. Dancing Through Life events typically have very high attendance rates, so people who want to attend are encouraged to get their tickets as soon as possible so they don’t miss out.

T

he first rule is that it has to be fun or it will fail.

Yukon has a long-running pothole lake fish stocking program. There are 18 of these lakes and six or seven of them are in or near Whitehorse.

Others are within a 2-hour drive. These lakes are stocked on a scheduled basis and depending on the lake, the fish are Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char or Kokanee Salmon (freshwater sockeye).

A stocked lake publication is available at any Department of Environment office or by Googling “Yukon stocked lakes.” Included are lake location maps, info on the fish and tips to make it a successful outing.

At many of these lakes, you can drive right to the water.

Some lakes are a bit ornery to fish from shore except in a few spots.

Hidden Lakes in Whitehorse are included as they were created when the Whitehorse dam was built in 1955, so they are flooded forest areas with the trees still standing under the lake surface.

These lakes are best fished using a canoe, small boat or winter icefishing (which can last into April).

Other than stocked lakes, there are a number of other nearby spots that are productive.

The Yukon River in Whitehorse has a number of species, but Arctic grayling are abundant and not hard to catch. Small flies or spinners seem to work best. Being right in town, fishing can be a couple of hours in the afternoon or even after supper.

Try the pools behind the fish hatchery or the point off the Millenium Trail reached by the skateboard park.

The straight river section off Wickstrom Road near the hospital is productive.

Part 2 with small lures, spinners or flies. A very productive method especially for youngsters who cannot cast a line yet, is Powerbait, which comes in a small jar, in various flavours, shapes and as a paste. Simple to use, the rig is a sinker at the end of the line and a dropper hook (6” to 8”) 3 to 4 feet up the line. You might have to cast for the child, but after the sinker is on the bottom, reel in some line to keep the hook off the bottom (Powerbait floats, which helps.)

Grayling like little black flies all year. A split shot a foot above the fly and a float or bobber 5 to 6 feet above that. It is cast out and retrieved slowly.

You do the casting and they do the reeling.

It’s up to you to make it fun.

Not very far south out of town is the Lewes River bridge.

This area has pike, grayling and whitefish and is easily fished from shore. Try the small point on the Marsh Lake side of the bridge or the north side of the bridge again on the Marsh Lake side. Whitefish are frequently caught on the downstream side of the boat lock by the dam.

A little further south is the Johnson’s Crossing Bridge over the Teslin River. There is open space

to fish from shore on both sides of the river on the downstream side of the bridge. Arctic grayling are abundant and available all year as

long as the area isn’t frozen over, which happens occasionally, but only temporarily.

Stocked lakes can be fished

n this year’s cover of NorthwesTel’s 2018/19 phone directory is Gabrielle Watts’ sensational painting, Mount Lorne From Above. Watts has always been intrigued by the majesty of Mount Lorne, so she produced a landscape painting inspired by it especially for the annual NorthwesTel Directory Cover Art Competition.

Watts was also the winner of the 2011/12 NorthwesTel competition with her painting Yukon River Valley and has come to be a renowned local artist who continues to pursue and share her passion as a member of the Yukon Art Society.

A Whitehorse resident for just about 24 years now, Watts considers the Yukon home and continues to be fascinated by the beauty of its landscapes.

“There are not too many places like this, elsewhere,” she states before explaining what peaked her creativity to paint Mount Lorne from Above. “On flights in and out of the Yukon, I am always taking pictures from the air.”

On a clear winter day, in January, Watts captured this particular shot of Mount Lorne. The sun was low, she described, which gave the snow a warm, glowing colour while also forming long,

dark shadows in the valleys. She took the photograph, which she used as a vision for this year’s submitted piece, in 2013, and found it fitting to recreate it in just four short days for the annual NorthwesTel competition.

Watts is a self-taught artist who took an interest in art at a young age; however, she only started to pursue it after she came to the Yukon. Never having taken a lesson, one day she decided to put paintbrush to canvas to see how she would do.

Painting landscapes is what Watts has come to enjoy most, as she looks for scenes that have something unique about them, something eye grabbing that sparks the inspiration to create.

For Watts, painting is a form of relaxation that takes her into another world. Watts feels that she is not a prolific painter , but paints only when she feels the need to do something creative.

“I have a pile of pictures that I know will make good paintings ... I look to those for inspiration,” she shares.

Watts believes that some people are born with the desire to create art, as it is ingrained inside them, but also believes that life experience has a huge influence as it leads people in certain directions. Throughout her life,

she has had the opportunity to live in and travel to many different places around the world.

Exposure to diverse cultures, along with the ability to visit art galleries and museums, further familiarized her with the world of art and has contributed to her art career.

Watts expressed how extremely excited and honoured she is to have won the NorthwesTel Directory Cover Art Competition for a second time. “I am really humbled to have been chosen again.”

Gabrielle Watts is a member of the Yukon Art Society and has participated in several collaborative art showcases over the years. In 2019, Watts, along with a group of women, is hoping to do another show to display her work. So make sure to keep your eyes and ears open for a collective art showcase featuring Gabrielle Watts, early next year.

Odessa Beatty is a writer at What’s Up Yukon. She is currently a student at McGill University however was born and raised in the Yukon. She is passionate about arts, and culture. Watch for her performing high kicks at the Klondike Follies this summer!

Are you ready for a good time? Love country rock?

n June 23 Teslin will again be hosting an electrifying country-rock concert called Teslin Rocks Country, featuring a slate of excellent contemporary Canadian country artists.

Headlining the show will be two artists from from British Columbia: Aaron Pritchett and The Washboard Union.

Aaron Pritchett’s reputation as a solid and well-known country artist in Canada spans over 20 years. Hailing from Gabriola Island/Nanaimo, Pritchett has played to sell-out shows throughout Canada, is an avid fan of hockey, a tireless contributor to many charitable causes and has a special place in his heart for small communities across Canada, having himself come from a small northern British Columbia town.

Pritchett is no stranger to the Yukon. He attended the first Teslin Rocks Country in 2016 and also attended the West Coast Music Awards in 2011. While here in 2011, he heard about two students who suffered severe injuries in a bonfire accident.

Pritchett immediately offered to do a concert for free and performed at Porter Creek Secondary School.

“I’m very excited about coming back to Teslin to do another show,” Pritchett said when asked about the return engagement.

“The last one in 2016 was a great time.”

festivals and concerts, in addition to radio guest appearances, including performing their hit “Shine” on center stage at this year’s Canadian Country Music Awards. Their most recent releases “Shine” and “What We’re Made Of” have become ever popular themes in their concerts.

The Teslin Rocks Country event will be their first show in the Yukon. “It’s our first time in the Yukon, and we are very excited to come to Teslin, in the Teslin Arena, in the Land of the Midnight Sun,” the band said in a video for the show.

Country music fans in western Canada had a chance to catch them live earlier this year, as they opened for the American band Old Dominion’s tour through Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia in February, and are heading out across Canada again this spring and summer, with dates in Ontario and Quebec in August.

Rounding out the show will be Jordan Aaron, an up-and coming country musician from Vancouver; Mussell and the Flex, a novel rock and country cover band from Victoria; and Whitehorse singer-songwriter Roger Gabriel, who performed in the first Teslin Rocks Country in 2016.

We are excited to be hosting this event, which will mark only the second time in a number of years that Teslin has held a musical event, and will certainly be as notable as Teslin Rocks Country 2016 was. We are looking forward to once again putting on a premium concert in Teslin.

The Teslin Rocks Country event takes place on Saturday, June 23 at the Teslin Arena. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 6 p.m.

Summer dancing is on its way to the Whitehorse Wharf on Front Street beginning May 31 at 5 p.m.

T

he Yukon Arts Centre and Paradise Music Festival are partnering to bring a new spring concert series to the Whitehorse Wharf on Front Street at the end of Main. Beginning on May 31 at 5 p.m., guest DJs will perform, providing a summer dance floor for Yukon families and dance music fans alike.

The collaboration has been developed by Kasey-Rae Anderson, who is the wharf coordinator for the Yukon Arts Centre, and Kevin Jack (a.k.a. DJKJ), who is the president of the Paradise Music Festival.

The two see it as an opportunity to showcase the electronic music scene that has returned to Whitehorse over the past few years. “[The Yukon Arts Centre] knew that there has been a lot of electronic dance music (EDM) DJs in the local bars,” said Anderson.

“I reached out to Kevin because he has a pulse on the DJ scene.

Paradise has done the booking.

“We wanted to do something for the electronic music scene that’s happening.”

Jack, who has been a DJ performing in the territory for 18 years, sees it as a great opportunity to develop partnerships that haven’t always existed

PHOTO: Alex Jegier in the past. “It’s a really good bridge for the Yukon Arts Centre and Paradise to partner,” Jack explained. “Hopefully we can build it further and look at bringing up some bigger acts.”

The Whitehorse Wharf is part of the Yukon Arts Centre’s Old Fire Hall management, and Anderson says that while it has been used for public events for the past few years, this will be the first programming done by Paradise. As a public space, the wharf shows will be open to anyone who wants to attend. The two groups hope that it will share EDM with people who haven’t had a chance

Kevin Jack (DJKJ) is the president of the Paradise Music Festival and will DJ the first performance on the wharf to experience it before.

“It’s a chance to highlight the electronic scene,” said Jack.

“Like any genre, it goes in and out of style. [EDM] has been making a comeback the past three years.”

Jack will partner with Sean Sluggett (a.k.a. DJ Purple Teeth) for the first show.The duo will be performing summer-friendly, happy tunes in the ghetto funk genre. Ghetto funk is a newer sub-genre of EDM and is a mix of

older tunes, like Michael Jackson or old-school hip hop, that are remastered for the electronic dance floor.

“When people think of electronic music they often think of Ibiza or Burning Man dance floors with a crazy 180 beats per minute,” Jack explained.

“There’s a whole bunch of different types and it’s a real chance to show the diversity and our diverse group of artists.”

The event is targeted for anyone, including EDM enthusiasts or families who want to come out and have a good time dancing.

Jack saw an appetite for family dancing at the recent Type 1 diabetes conference where Paradise partnered with the Yukon T1D Support Network to put on a con-

cert. The event had a family portion from 7 to 9 p.m. that was well received.

“We had good feedback,” said Jack. “We had people saying ‘Thanks for putting on a show we can bring our families to.’”

The Yukon’s lost centenarian

ecently, while researching the census statistics accompanying an editorial in the spring issue of Sourdough Chronicle (YCOAYukon.com), I was astonished to learn that the Yukon Territory currently is without a card-carrying centenarian, male or female, according to the most recent age data on record which is the 2016 census.

This doesn’t seem possible in a place where white-bearded men and blue-haired women appeared to be everywhere during 2018 Sourdough Rendezvous. Yet, here is the “proof:” Yukon Population By Age: 2016 Census 80-84 years. . . . 375 85-89 years. . . . 195 90-94 years. . . . 80 95-99 years. . . . 20 100+ . . . . . . . . 0 This disturbing knowledge sent us on a surfing trip to try to figure out why. Could the culprit be our harsh and demanding winter climate? So we checked out our American trumpsters to the west, also using 2016 census numbers: AK pop: . . . . . . 741,894 Centenarians: . . 83 (The oldest and coldest being Fern Elam, of Kenai, who was 105 in 2016.)

As we head into warmer temperatures, it’s time to dust off those tents and enjoy some overnight camping trips in the Yukon

B

y no means do I consider myself an aficionado about hiking, but I love it most of the time and learn something new every single hike – either through an experience or meeting someone who does it better.

Slowly, over the years I have accumulated new techniques, gear and tips to manage hiking and camping trips. A new type of camping I learned in the Yukon last summer is car camping, which was an interesting experience for me, but a lot more fun than carrying everything you need on your back.

Do you need that book to read or can you handle a week with your own thoughts? Sometimes it can be tough, especially when you can’t afford the latest and greatest lightweight gear or you go alone. From my experi-

ence, here are the top 10 items you must have when camping:

1. Excellent hiking boots

The most important aspect to any outdoor adventure is taking care of your feet, because no matter what type of camping trip you do, having waterproof, dur-

able hiking boots it’s a must. If you have ill-fitting boots, you will get blisters and be uncomfortable and in pain and you won’t enjoy your trip.

Top ten items needed for all camping trips ... continued from page 23 trips. It’s going to keep you dry and protected from the annoying bugs.

I have Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC) Camper 2 tent that can sleep two people.

My must-have in a tent is a vestibule area. There is nothing worse than putting your drenched boots inside your tent – until you get home and can thoroughly dry it out, your tent will stay wet. So having an outside, but protected area, is key to keeping dry.

However, a lot of great trails are accessible by road, so I also have a bed in the back of my van that gives me a very comfortable sleep for a weekend of hiking.

3. Sleeping bag

Being too hot or too cold can determine how much (or little) sleep you will get. The mountains, particularly up high or near lakes, can get very chilly at night, very quickly.

You need to make sure your sleeping bag is going to keep you warm enough at night. I have a Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag classified for extreme -22, it’s comfortable in -10 and way too hot in about +5. It’s bulky, which is a big downside for hiking, as it takes a lot of room. The more you spend, the more lightweight and compact, but still effective, your

sleeping bag will be in extreme temperatures.

4. Rucksack

Having hiked for many weeks in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia, I can vouch for how important a well-fitted rucksack can be – and even if it is well-fitted, it can still batter your body.

Make sure you have a waist and chest strap and can adjust the back according to your height.

Make sure to pack your bag with the heaviest items at the bottom and lightest at the top. Your legs have the most strength and you need to distribute the weight around your body to best utilise your strength.

It can be tricky sometimes, because you don’t want to repack your bag every time you need something. So sometimes your 1-2 kg water bottle will be at the top of your pack. Let’s just say you develop really good back muscles after a few trips in a summer.

Hiking around for weeks with 30 kg on my back leads to bruised hips and shoulders from the weight of the pack, but surprisingly, the human body can withstand a lot. I’ve had my pack for eight years and it has travelled all over the world in all types of climates and environments. It’s a Berghaus “60L +10L” rucksack.

My first car camping experience in Aishihik Lake introduced me to the luxurious side of camping, in that your entire vehicle can carry (almost) anything you’d like to have at your campsite. Like wood, an axe, fold up chairs, a jug of water...

5. Hiking poles

Without hiking poles, heading up with a heavy backpack is near impossible. The hiking poles give support and help with balance.

They also shift some of the weight of the rucksack to your arms instead of just weighing on your legs.

I have hiking poles for summer use and for winter use. Usually the baskets at the base will determine which pole I take. The bigger baskets would be for powder ski days

with smallest or no basket for hiking in dry summer.

6. Camping stove and fuel – and matches!

Being able to have a warm meal after a long day is definitely a satisfying treat. After years of having a big stove and pot I recently upgraded to the tiny, backpackerfriendly system GSI Halulite Minimalist Cookset and MSR Pocket Rocket 2 Stove. It’s lightweight

and can pack it all into one small container, including a small MSR Isopro fuel canister.

Don’t forget to keep track of how much gas you use, because there’s nothing worse than running out when you need it the most. Also don’t forget to have dry matches – lighters won’t work if it’s too cold. Also be prepared for inclement weather….what cont’d on page 26 ...

7. Food, snacks and water!

There’s nothing more important than keeping your body fuelled up as you burn through your hiking days. There are so many suggestions to have the best foods and snacks on your trip, it’s really up to you.

For long trips I’ll take the dehydrated, pre-made Mountain House meals for breakfast and dinner, and then have things like cheese, wraps, jerky and dried fruits for lunch. I also bring tablets for the gastrointestinal problems you may encounter with this diet If it’s a short trip or I have access to my vehicle, I modify this.

But mostly after 10 to 12 hours of hiking solo, the last thing I want to do is make a meal from scratch and carrying all your food yourself, the lighter the better.

There’s no right or wrong way, as long as you keep your energy levels up and prepare for potential bodily reactions you will be fine. It’s always better to have a little more food than not enough. Clean drink-

What clothing to wear is an important issue, and it’s often tricky – particularly in the Yukon. The weather can change instantly and if you aren’t prepared you could get in trouble.

In spring, there will still be snow at the summits and the winds are strong and cold. So bring a windproof shell to put on.

I wear light Arc’teryx gloves; Outdoor Research brand quick dry hiking pants and gaiters; knee high Darn Tough brand socks; a long sleeve, quick dry hiking top; Columbia brand puffy jacket; and, of course, my Yukon Built brand cap and sunglasses.

Only once have I not had to wear a jacket while hiking in Yukon, and that was when we had the one week of 30ºC. Otherwise,

I also carry water purifying tablets, insect repellent, toilet paper, plastic bags and sunscreen. Bear spray – just don’t mace yourself with it!

10. A little nip is well deserved

Nothing like a well-deserved nip of Fireball whisky after a long hard days hike sitting by a fire. It’s totally worth the weight!
