etting a medal is never the point of the Special Olympics Provincial Games.

“We’re there to have fun,” says Gaetan Michaud, captain of Yukon’s Special Olympics soccer team. “It’s about doing your best.”

He should know. Michaud, now 37, has been participating in the Special Olympics since he was seven years old.

On July 5, he is one of 22 Yukon athletes with intellectual disabilities heading to the Provincial Games in Kamloops, British Columbia. Thirty-six people in total make up the contingent including coaches and Special Olympics staff.

The Special Olympics Provincial Games takes place every two years, alternating between winter and summer sports. Those who

qualify this round go on to compete in the National Games, which take place next year in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

The athletes will represent the Yukon in six sports including swimming, soccer, rhythmic gymnastics, golf and bocce.

It’s an exciting time. Participants meet athletes from all over the West Coast. The trip is about camaraderie with their teammates and the chance to make new friends.

“I think Aimee has just as much fun cheering other people on,” says Sherry Dube, whose daughter Aimee Lien will be participating in the Games.

Lien, age 24, is competing in rhythmic gymnastics.

“The Games are a motivator,” Dube says. While training for the

Games, “[Aimee] gets excited, gets confident and feels proud.”

It’s also an exciting time for coaches. Janine Peters, who currently coaches golfing, has been a coach with Special Olympics for 17 years. She will be attending with the team. A sport lover herself, she has coached a wide range of activities including swimming, curling, 5-pin bowling and softball.

Peters’ commitment to the Special Olympics has been motivated by a real love of helping people, especially those who are marginalized. She believes the Games gives them the chance to shine.

Training for the Games gets serious almost a year before the competition. In the fall, athletes who are interested in participating in the Provincial Games are asked to commit to training three times per week with a certificated coach. They also agree to a code of sportsmanship, which includes a commitment to trying their best and listening to their coach.

“I am proud of the accomplishments of our athletes, their hard work,” says Serge Michaud, the longtime executive director of Special Olympics Yukon – and Gaetan’s older brother. “Our athletes don’t get paid. They’re passionate about being fit, to show Yukoners what they can do.”

Sometimes, participants do win a medal. According to Gaetan, people go to have a good time, but often surprise themselves and perform even better than in training, winning a medal in the process.

Sherry Dube laughs when medals are mentioned. While it’s not the goal for her daughter, “A medal doesn’t hurt,” she says.

She encourages all people with intellectual disabilities or their caregivers to consider participating. There are a host of benefits to joining the Special Olympics, Dube says. “You will never be sorry.”

here’s going to be a new projector at the Globe Theatre this year when the Available Light Film Festival (ALFF) takes its films to the Atlin Arts and Music Festival.

Andrew Connors, artistic director of ALFF, says this will give a sharper image than previous years, but he notes that no showing at the Globe is a bad showing.

“It’s just a treat to be in there and to turn it into a surround sound cinema,” he says. “It’s such a beautiful venue – and an intimate venue.”

For the eighth year, ALFF (which takes place in Whitehorse in February) will host selected screenings as part of Atlin.

In fact, films will kick off the weekend on Thursday July 6, when ALFF hosts a screening of the 1932 revenge-drama movie, Freaks.

The film, which Connors only recently saw for the first time, focuses on a group of circus sideshow performers – played by real sideshow performers of the time – and what they do when they find out a stunning trapeze artist is marrying one of the “freaks” for his inheritance.

The film will have a live score (Connors calls it “structured improvisation”) performed by The Sputnik Experiment.

On Friday, July 7, there will be a handful of short documentaries from the Dawson City International Short Film Festival.

neys to Adäka, which is about the Adäka Cultural festival in Whitehorse, and producer Teresa Earle will be in attendance for a Q&A. Later that same day, director Marie Clements will be onsite to answer questions after the screening of her 2017 film, The Road Forward. The musical documentary chronicles the beginnings of Indigenous Nationalism in the 1930s, and connects it with contemporary First Nations activism today.

Filmmakers will also be in attendance for Saturday’s “New Territory” event, showcasing shorts from across the Yukon.

These include Underdog, about musher Yuka Honda; Ice Flow, about a couple on the Klondike River; Second Nature: Feral, about an abandoned house falling to the elements; The Old Crow Solar Project, about the Vuntut

The 2017 musical documentary The Road Forward by Canadian Métis filmmaker Marie Clements screens on July 8 as part of the Atlin Arts and Music Festival Gwitchin Government’s initiative to bring solar energy to the Yukon’s most northern community; and Pictures Don’t Lie, where the late JJ Van Bibber, a Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in elder, tells the story of his life.

“Those screenings are an opportunity for us to put the work of Yukon filmmakers and northern filmmakers in front of an audience that wouldn’t normally be exposed to it, because there’s a lot of visitors from outside the Yukon who go to that festival and even if they come through Whitehorse they don’t get the chance to see that work,” says Connors.

As far as non-homegrown offerings, ALFF will show the 2015 film Manifesto, which is an avant

garde art film starring Cate Blanchett, that, Connors says, is not straightforward in its narrative.

“It’s an arts festival and this is a pretty challenging film,” he says. “It’s good to throw a bit of madness in there and shake people up and get them thinking.

“And Cate Blanchett is an incredible actor. In this, she plays 13 characters, and she’s unrecognizable in a few of them, so that’s why it stood out for me.”

“We do anticipate that this is going to sell out,” she says.

As of June 23 there were still campsites at the festival grounds available (sites can also be booked at YukonTickets.com), which isn’t normally the case this close to the festival.

Even if these sites sell out, though, Drainville notes there’s plenty of overflow camping available.

“There’s tons of camping,” she says. “We’re never going to run out of camping.”

Drainville is excited for this year’s festival because of some of the new features, including Kids Fest. There have always been workshops for kids, she says, but the festival ramped it up this year, partly because families were asking for it.

“It certainly didn’t hurt that I myself have four children,” she says. “I really have a passion for engaging youth in the arts.”

This year that engagement takes the form of a Frantic Follies vaudeville camp and a rock camp led by Yukon band Speed Control.

There will also be square dancing workshops and a children’s reading room, featuring live readings of kids stories.

The festival has also partnered this year with a literary event called Atlin Lit Up! For programming that spans Saturday and Sunday.

here are so many East Coasters performing at this year’s Atlin Arts and Music Festival, organizers felt it only made sense to program an East Coast kitchen party during the festival, taking place in Atlin July 7 to 9.

“Definitely (the kitchen party) is an acknowledgement of the volume of East Coasters on the roster,” says producer and artistic director Angela Drainville. “There are a lot from the East Coast. A number from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Ontario.”

Not only is Halifax headliner Joel Plaskett playing twice (Friday at 9 p.m. with his father, musician Bill Plaskett, and Saturday at 10 p.m. with his more raucous Emergency Band), the lineup also includes Rose Cousins, a singer from Prince Edward Island (8 p.m.

Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday), and IsKwé, a Winnipeg-born, Torontobased singer songwriter (midnight on Friday).

Drainville says there’s also a good number of performers from Vancouver, as well as a solid lineup of Yukoners, including Antarcticus (6 p.m. Saturday), Calla Kinglit (3 p.m. Sunday), Claire Ness (noon Saturday and Sunday), Major Funk and the Employment (midnight Saturday), and Speed Control (8 p.m. Saturday).

At the moment, Drainville says the festival is 80 per cent sold out, with roughly 300 tickets remaining between sales agents online at YukonTickets.com, at the Yukon

Bruce Cockburn was the headliner at last year’s Atlin Arts and Music Festival Finally, Drainville says the fireside jams are back this year, with a slate of artists scheduled to head out into the campgrounds (maps will be available at the festival) to lead singalongs on Friday and Saturday nights.

Drainville says she doesn’t know what it is about Atlin that makes it so appealing to such a broad cross-section of people, from families with young children, to 20-somethings, to retirees, but she suspects it has something to do with the town itself.

“I think there’s something about the environment there.

There’s a certain feeling that you get when you’re in Atlin that takes over,” says Drainville. “It’s evolved into being a really familyfriendly, peaceful atmosphere that people really enjoy.”

The Atlin Arts and Music Festival takes place Friday, July 7 through Sunday, July 9. Atlin is a 2-hour drive south of Whitehorse.

T

he emptying-out of Yukon’s schools signals the official start of that much-anticipated annual ritual: the Summer Holiday.

We all know the narrative arc of that story. For the first little while, the kids are bursting to be outside every moment of the day, burning off the pent-up energy held hostage inside the classroom for months.

Adventures will be had; risks will be taken; knees, elbows and hearts will be bruised; new friendships will be made, then broken by disputes over who’s the bravest and who’s a cowardycustard; lifelong memories and never-to-be-divulged secrets will be shared.

Inevitably, a few weeks in, the compulsion to rush outside immediately after breakfast will give way to a more leisurely exit, and increasing phone calls saying, “I dunno. What do you want to do?”

As July grinds on, especially on gloomier days, more time will be spent indoors, engrossed in comic

books and video games, or just lolling around, grousing about not having a single thing to do.

Like clockwork, around the second week of August, the focus will begin to shift toward the coming school year, what the new teacher will be like, and I hope I don’t have to sit beside that drip, Derek, again this year.

Rare is the family that manages to handle the summer holidays with ease, orchestrating the time with a magic blend of summer camp, day camps, and occasional outings to the beach, a festival, or just a shady picnic spot.

For them, summer might include time at a cottage, with enough down time at home to make “special” outings seem special, or even an extended road trip to interesting new locales.

That last one was one of my family’s specialties. With five kids and two adults crammed into a too-small car in a time long before air conditioning, we roamed through most of Canada and countless U.S. states.

Those trips honed my love of

travel and discovery as surely as Scout camp prepared me to be the wilderness warrior I like to consider myself.

Sure, I remember long days of boredom and claustrophobia, bitter arguments over personal space, late-night arrivals at onestar motels, and a sense that the car contained barely enough oxygen for four, let alone seven.

But I remember those clever Burma Shave signs, that first frosty taste of A&W root beer, and the miracle of soft ice cream. And I remember the majesty of Niagara Falls as vividly as the boileddry radiator on the white-knuckle switchbacks of the Kicking Horse Pass.

Most of all, I remember the togetherness, the silly songs and riddles, the games of “spot the Edsel” and (later) “punch-buggy.”

Whatever your summer holds in store, may you live it large.

Fireweed Jelly

A unique taste of the North

T

he beautiful and striking fireweed plant, with it’s spray of magenta flowers is the iconic symbol of the north. Chosen as the Yukon’s official floral symbol in 1957, fireweed represents not only the natural beauty of the territory, but also the history and culture of its people. Fireweed is also an apt symbol of resilience as it is often the first plant to appear after a forest fire.

You will see the ubiquitous fireweed plants in your travels, along roadsides, hillsides, and clearings in the Yukon, Northern British Columbia and Alaska – and perhaps even in your own backyard.

Fireweed is known not only for its beauty and symbolic cultural importance, but as a delicious and unique jelly. Fireweed jelly is an authentic gift for family and friends visiting the north. It is easy to make, and will be greatly appreciated.

There are many recipes for fireweed Jelly. This is the one I use.

Paul Rath is a freelance writer who lives on the Haines Highway where the fireweed is plentiful.

Fireweed Jelly Ingredients: 8 cups fireweed blossoms (no stems or leaves) ¼ cup lemon juice

You will see the wonderful magenta colour as the boiling water frees it from the blossoms

Add your pectin powder to the strained juice and bring to a boil

Savour and enjoy the unique taste of the north, which you have captured and preserved for days to come

Yield: approximately 15 x 125 ml jars

4 ½ cups water 2 packages powdered pectin 5 cups sugar

Method: • Collect the fireweed blossoms. Avoid the green stems and leaves. I harvest the blooming stalks while my patient wife picks and measures the blossoms. When picking, there could be bugs and perhaps bees, so be careful. We place the precious blossoms in a large freezer bag.

• Blossoms can be frozen if you want to schedule your jelly making for a more convenient time.

• Prepare your jars. Pre-heat your oven to 225ºF. Wash your jars in soapy water, rinse well and place them in the oven for at least 20 minutes.

• Add lemon juice and water to fireweed blossoms, and boil for 10 minutes. Strain the blossoms. We use a fine steel mesh, and then squeeze the blossoms through an old tea towel, if you don’t have a jelly bag. You will see the wonderful magenta colour as the boiling water frees it from the blossoms. You should end up with about 4 cups of juice.

• Add your pectin powder to the strained juice and bring to a boil.

• Add sugar and bring to a boil for 1 minute.

• Pour into your jars and seal. Process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

• Check to ensure that all lids have sealed properly.

• Savour and enjoy the unique taste of the north, which you have captured and preserved for days to come.

A Year of Firsts at the Yukon Arts Centre Onegin comes to the Yukon and there’s karaoke too!

here’s a lot to look forward to at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) this coming season.

“We want all Yukoners to enjoy the arts and not have to go down to Toronto,” says YAC Marketing and Development Director Sarah Frey.

This season the centre is celebrating its 25th anniversary year.

“It’s a big year for us with a lot of milestones,” Frey says.

Frey is excited about the 2018 lineup, and she isn’t the only one.

“The season offers a diverse range of outstanding performances from across the country including great homegrown Yukon work,” says Yukon Arts Centre Artistic Director Eric Epstein. “There is music, dance, theatre, comedy and more.”

He’s looking forward to revisiting some of the golden oldies. “In celebration of our first quarter century, we are thrilled to bring back The Grapes of Wrath’s Kevin Kane who performed during the YAC Opening Festival in 1992. Featured on the same program will be Yukon favourites Manfred Janssen and Jim Vautour in a rare duo performance,” says Epstein.

The National Arts Centre in Ottawa has announced a year-long project teaming up as presenting partners with arts organizations across the country this year. The National Arts Centre’s involvement will allow the Yukon Arts Centre to present a series of locally curated, high demand performances that would otherwise be inaccessible to many Yukoners.

The tent pole of the season is an adaptation of Pushkin’s poem and Tchaikovsky’s subsequent opera Onegin. Presented by the Yukon Arts Centre in partnership with Nakai Theatre, the romantic theatre piece by Veda Hille of the the Vancouver Arts Club is seen as having solid Broadway potential.

Onegin debuts on the Yukon Arts Centre’s Mainstage February 1-3.

“We haven’t had anything like that on the stage in a while and we’re really excited to bring that level of performance to the Yukon,” says Frey. “The fever is

catching among staff.”

Yukon themed programming includes Busted Up: A Yukon Story presented by Open Pit Theatre from September 13 to 23 at The Old Fire Hall. The season begins and ends performances celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Yukon Arts Centre. Kicking off with a formal Hall of Fame Gala in September to celebrate iconic Yukon artists in the community and ending with an Audience Choice Concert.

Aforementioned Artistic Director Eric Epstein is taking suggestions for which Canadian musicians Yukoners would like to see live, with bids open until June 30.

This season will also pilot a new “choose-your-own” style Northwestel Art Lovers Subscription Series. “We want to empower patrons to curate their own YAC experience,” says Sarah Frey.

Single tickets are currently on sale to the general public and subscribers have until September 29 to select five of the available performances, and get their 20 per cent discount. nce upon a time, long ago, a young truck driver in Whitehorse found himself with five days off work to celebrate the May long weekend and decided to finally visit Dawson City for the first time. It was either 1971 or ‘72, and he had been listening to his coworkers talk about it all winter. That young man was me, and my knowledge of the Klondike was scant, but he had read Pierre Berton’s version of it and was curious to see the real thing. It was love at first sight.

There was a handwritten sign taped in the front window of the DCW Grocery Store that said: “Urgently Needed: Dealers for the first season of Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall. See April Moi inside.”

The job paid $50 a night (plus tips) to work from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., which meant you could also find a full time day job and do both.

So I shook hands with April, who told me dealer school started on Tuesday morning when a guy from Las Vegas was arriving to teach us all how to deal cards and behave in a casino. His name was Bob Busey and he looked like central casting had picked him out. Tall, thin and dapper, he wore aviator glasses, spoke softly and acted like he’d been born in a house of ill-gotten fame. He first taught us how to shuffle like a pro and we spent hours upon hours doing nothing else.

The other dealers were mostly university students on summer jobs, but some were Dawson locals looking to bump their incomes over

the summer. There were about 20 in Busey’s school and it was genderbalanced ahead of the times, because the six can-can dancers were being asked to also deal when they weren’t dancing or serving drinks.

Busey had a six-week contract with the KVA (Klondike Visitors Association), three weeks to teach the dealers then three weeks to get the casino up and running before he selected one dealer to become the first pitboss of Canada’s first legal gambling casino.

When I later asked him why he bestowed that dubious and unwanted honour on me, he replied, “No brainer: Vietnam. Anybody who can survive Marine Corps boot camp and a year in a crazy jungle war isn’t going to have any problems with a tiny casino on the Arctic Ocean.” I was about to turn it down when he said he’d already raised my pay to $100 a night, which was pretty much what I made for a long, full day of driving trucks at $12 per hour. So the die was cast.

Bob taught us all the mechanics and rituals of dealing cards and made the schooling fun and interesting with his true stories from Vegas, Reno and Carson City, since he’d worked at all three. But the RCMP were also involved in our training because this was a big deal in those days, legalizing gambling in Canada. A fellow named Ron Shepherd came out from Ottawa, maybe Regina, and spent a week teaching us how to spot cheaters, card sharks, counters and splashers. Splashers were cheats who tried to briefly mark cards by

splashing water spots on them.

Shepherd was the head of the RCMP anti-gambling division and there was nothing a gambler might have up his sleeve that he hadn’t already seen or heard about. He also briefed me on security protocols and undercover backup nobody else knew about and coached me on how to handle the cash out of the dropboxes, since that was my most important job. Later on I was taking anywhere between $5 to $10,000 down to the night deposit at CIBC and – swear to God – he even taught me to walk a certain way to not draw attention when I was wearing a loaded money belt full of cash.

trying to knock off the take, but, being young and dumb, I wasn’t worried. After all, this was the Klondike where the YCGC (Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation) used to have millions in gold moving casually around town. The Casino numbers were peanuts in comparison.

But that all came later. During the lead up to opening night, there was a slight tension in the air, possibly fear of the unknown, because this had never been done before. But, for the most part, it grew tedious and boring. How many times can you shuffle a deck of cards and count to 21 before you’ve got the hang of it?

A day or two before the official opening, Danny Moi (April’s husband) and I climbed up a couple ladders above the door and hung the big “Diamond Tooth Gertie’s” banner over the building’s old name, which was Dawson Amateur Athletic Association.

I morphed into my Days of ‘98 look, which included a handlebar mustache, a part down the middle of my hair and wire-rim glasses to complete the 1898 gambler/dweeb look. Busey had also taught me the “Pitboss Glare,” which was a look in your eyes of disinterested interest.

It was role playing with a purpose during practice, but that changed when the doors opened and hundreds of starry-eyed gamblers – many of them rowdy asbestos miners from Clinton Creek – rushed in hoping to get rich quick so they could quit their jobs and save their lungs.

Filipino Spaghetti with Bison F

ilipino spaghetti is the perfect food; it’s meaty, savory, sweet and cheesy. And most importantly it’s filled with hot dogs. Whitehorse is lucky enough to have access to lots of great Filipino ingredients on our grocery store shelves, you can even find a packaged version of this sauce that only needs the meat and vegetables added.

Traditionally Filipino spaghetti is made with either beef or pork, this recipe uses bison, but you could give any sort of ground meat a try.

Stay away from any sort of ground poultry though, it doesn’t have the depth of flavour you really need to balance out this sauce. I used a cheddar smoky for this recipe, but any sort of hotdog will do the trick.

Serves 6 Bring the sauce to a simmer

INGREDIENTS 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 5 hot dogs, sliced 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 small onion, finely chopped ½ tsp ground oregano 1 ½ pounds ground bison 2 cups crushed tomatoes 1 cup banana ketchup (also called banana sauce) 2 Tbsp sugar Salt and pepper, to taste 1-pound spaghetti 1 cup shredded mild cheddar

METHOD

Once all the ingredients are added to the sauce, let it simmer

Grate the cheese

Heat the vegetable oil until shimmering in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the sliced hot dogs and cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove from skillet and reserve on a plate. Add garlic, onion and oregano to pan and cook until soft, about 4 minutes, then add ground bison. Cook stirring often breaking up the bits of bison with a wooden spoon until bison is fully cooked, about 8 minutes. Add the crushed tomatoes and banana ketchup and bring to a simmer, then add sugar and reserved hot dogs to the sauce.

Simmer for 30 minutes, season to taste with salt and pepper.

Cook pasta according to package directions, drain and place cooked pasta in a large bowl. Add 2 cups of sauce and toss to combine. Divide pasta between plates and top with additional sauce and top with grated cheese.

ou don’t own a boat or a canoe? No problem – Little Atlin Lodge is one of the very rare locations in the Yukon where you can rent a boat or a canoe directly on a lake shore.

The Little Atlin Lodge at km 6 of Highway #7 (Atlin Road) offers boat and canoe rentals on an hourly or daily rate. Your trip starts directly at their dock on Little Atlin Lake, which is known to be a fisherman’s paradise (and a fisherwoman’s, too)!

Last July, we had been very lucky with whitefish and northern pike, but the lake also offers good opportunities for lake trout and arctic grayling.

The lodge sells Yukon Angling Licences (cash only), which is very handy if you don’t have one yet.

Besides fishing we discovered the lake shore with a canoe. We enjoyed the landscape with Mount Minto in the back, watched bald eagles sitting on tree tops and tried to spot mountain goats high up on White Mountain. It’s only about 90 km from Whitehorse, but if you wish to spend more than

one day in the area, consider staying at Little Atlin Lodge in one of their lakefront guesthouses. Moreover, canoe rental is free if you stay at the lodge.

The Little Atlin Lake area also offers good opportunities for those who are into hiking. The more convenient of the two options is a stroll on an abandoned segment of the Atlin Road, that starts at km 9 on the Atlin Road.

It’s an easy 20-minute walk to an overlook onto Little Atlin Lake with interpretive signs on mountain goats.

We scanned the cliffs with binoculars and spotted some feeding high above. A predator of the goats, the golden eagle, nests on these sheer cliffs. We noticed several huge nests in the rock crevices.

If you are looking for an even better view over Little Atlin Lake, try the more demanding hike up to White Mountain (or Mount White). The trailhead is located at the gravel pit on km 6 of the cont’d on page 15...

Atlin Road. A short (2 km), but very steep trail, takes you up to a Northwestel radar tower. You can make this the destination of your hike as the view up there is gorgeous already – or you can continue for another kilometer to the top.

The summit is located on a plateau spotted with white limestone rocks, and it offers great opportunities for exploring. One is advised to watch for mountain goats along the trail and asked to refrain from hiking between mid May and mid June in order to not scare off the mother goats and expose the kids to predators.

By the way: we learned that there are different opinions on how this mountain got its name: some say it’s the white limestone, other say it’s named after Thomas White, a former minister of the interior from 1887-1888. Either way, the view is awesome and it makes this strenuous hike a very rewarding day trip.

Watson Lake Farmer’s Market Moves to the Sign Post Forest

ooking for something interesting to do on a Saturday afternoon? Look no further than the Watson Lake Farmer’s Market held at Historic Mile 635 in the famous Watson Lake Sign Post Forest.

Every Saturday from noon until 2 p.m., you can visit with resident artisans as you browse through the tables of locally made and harvested products. Taste some local fireweed honey; find out how chaga is harvested for tea; learn about essential oils and their many health benefits; try bannock; take home some wonderfully delicious baking; or purchase a hearty, home cooked lunch. These are just some of the local wares available for sale.

An extensive line up of northern musicians provides entertainment for those visiting the market.

Sit down around the gazebo, in the heart of the Sign Post Forest, and enjoy the toe-tapping, live music from performers such as Gerald Edzerza and Uphill and Still. Arts in the Park has been an integral part of the Watson Lake Farmer’s Market since the market’s inception in 2013.

“I loved being able to provide a place where all artists and entrepreneurs, young and old, would have a place to show their work that was a fun and good experience,” says Corrine Zozula Cole, long-time vendor and organizer

of the market for three years.

“I never charged a fee, as it is a huge learning curve to have the confidence in yourself and your products to sell. Most markets or festivals I have been involved in require a fee to enter. In some instances, you might not sell enough to cover the fee. When you are starting out, that can be very discouraging and you might feel like a failure, even though your work is awesome.

“Some days are good selling days and some are not. I wanted to inspire people to just come out and give it their best shot and stick with it. It was awesome watching the vendors gain confidence with each market. If they didn’t sell anything, they still had a great day in the park with a beautiful view and great live music. Everybody also left with a smile.”

Traditionally held at Wye Lake Park, organizers and vendors are excited about this new location in the Sign Post Forest. Marie Wilson, the originator of the Arts in the Park component to the market, comments, “as for the Sign Post Forest, I think that is a fantastic idea as well! There is a nice area inside the forest - both for tables and seating for people. I also like the idea that it will be that much more visible to tourists.”

“It was started because we felt it would be a great way to bring the community together, showcase talents within the community and of course, fresh food!” Wilson says. And it continues today.

Anyone wanting to have a table at the farmer’s market need only show up with their own table.

There is no charge for vendors or visitors.

Men’s World Softball Championships take place in Whitehorse July 7 to 16

ess than a week after Canada finally celebrates our 150th birthday, the top men’s softball (fastpitch) players in the country will be saddled with facing an angry New Zealand haka performed by disgruntled Black Sox players to begin the next 150 years.

The occasion is the 15th issue of the Men’s Softball World Championships to be contested here July 7 to 16, and the Kiwi beef stems from the 2015 Finals at Saskatoon when the Black Sox saw a 5-0 lead disappear on the way to a 10-5 Canadian victory in the gold medal game, Canada’s first since 1992.

If it’s true, as the old saying goes, revenge is a dish best served cold, they couldn’t have picked a better venue than sub-Arctic Whitehorse, gateway to the renowned goldfields of the fabled Klondike. Although, in all honesty, the summers here are usually hot and the sun shines most of the night. Like our good friends next door in Alaska, we can play ball late at night with no lights.

This will be the fourth time Whitehorse has hosted a World Championships and the first men’s.

The junior men’s were played here in 2008 and 2014 and the women in 2012. Worldwide, this will be the biggest men’s event of 2017 and, historically, probably the highest calibre of ball ever played in the Yukon – although oldtimers like to tell stories about some of the matches of Alaska versus Yukon at Dawson City’s Discovery Days tournament on August 17 weekend, an annual event with roots in the Gold Rush of 1898.

Let’s just call it the biggest collection of baseball talent to appear in the Yukon in the modern era – and these teams represent all five of the Olympic qualifying regions and their current world rankings.

Thomas, Ben and their captain were on the 2015 losing team and it was Thomas who said there is “unfinished business” and he has “a real fire in the belly to get the gold medal back again.”

Conversely, Canada will have bellies recently filled with copious quantities of birthday cake.

Historically, 2017 should be a three-way battle between New Zealand, USA and Canada, but the current world rankings don’t agree.

tion that comes up with the hottest pitchers at the right time, which is why I watch the early rounds like a scout looking for the hot young pitcher, often an unknown rookie.

Judging the pitchers is the scientific way of round robin watching. But this kind of baseball is more emotional than scientific and the New Zealand Black Sox are determined to capture the title Canada snatched from their grasp in 2015.

From a Canadian perspective nothing would be finer than a golden birthday present, but the rest of the world isn’t going to want to hear “O Canada” bouncing off Grey Mountain on medal Sunday, July 17.

In fact, methinks a haka victory chant is a far more likely scenario for Sunday evening’s entertainment.

Oyster Sauce Makes it Better N ot too many years ago, I discovered oyster sauce during a barbecue at a friend’s house. I wasn’t sure what the new flavour was, but I really enjoyed it.

I have passed on the secret to many others since then and all who have tried it rave about it.

This sauce can be found in all grocery stores in the Asian or spice section right beside the soy sauce.

It comes in a medium size glass bottle, but after you’ve tried it, you’ll be grabbing the big 3 litre plastic jug to keep the standard size jar topped up.

Like soy sauce it has a high sodium content (31 per cent) so salt avoiders will use it sparingly.

I first tasted it on a tin-foil wrapped baked potato, which had been sectioned into six pieces and held together by the foil. Just put a tablespoon or so of the sauce on the potato then open the cuts and let the sauce down into the centre

Try various coloured peppers, sliced zucchini, red onion, carrots, broccoli or cauliflower, separately or all together. Bean sprouts and water chestnuts are always welcome of the spud. Tightly wrap the foil and since it has been cut it will be done in about 45 minutes. No sour cream necessary. Thickly sliced, foil-wrapped potatoes work just as well and the portions can all be cooked in one foil-wrapped package.

vegetables for a stir-fry with oyster sauce and cook, stirring frequently in a vegetable wok on the barbecue. Sauté the same veggies in a cast iron pan or wok and add oyster sauce near the time they are done. Shut off heat and cover for 5 minutes before serving. Try various coloured peppers, sliced

zucchini, red onion, carrots, broccoli or cauliflower, separately or all together. Bean sprouts and water chestnuts are always welcome.

Try cabbage in single servings or larger portions, wrapped in foil coated with oyster sauce and on the barbecue. Depending on

temperature, look for about 3545 minutes to be done. If it is not done, just re-wrap the foil and put it back on the grill. Just remember the total time so you know for next time. Foil-wrapped cole-slaw works well, also, but needs to be monitored closely as the smaller pieces can easily burn.

Cut any wild game, domestic meat or fowl into stir fry pieces (about 1 cm thick and finger length or less) and cook in a cast iron pan or veggie wok on the barbecue. In a Ziploc, shake in olive oil (just enough to coat) and add oyster sauce while cooking. The pan should be very hot and the food should be stirred continuously for only a few minutes to be done. Take off the heat and let sit for 5 minutes with a lid or foil cover.

A veggie wok can be found at any store that sells barbecues and accessories. They are stainless steel, round or square, the size of a dinner plate and full of holes.

They blacken up quite quickly and are kept reasonably clean by scraping with the spatula or leaving them on the hot barbecue grill.

The gentle river quickly disappears, as does the horizon line and you enter the heart of the canyon. The Tutshi canyon is fast, generally grade III, with a grade IV drop known as the Nozzle, which we will scout. Below the canyon we will paddle a section known as “The Drops”, which is a series of grade IV and V rapids, with flat pools at the bottom.

The trip can be done in one day, leaving Whitehorse by 7:45 a.m. and returning to Whitehorse by approximately 7:30 p.m. We do not provide transportation to the river, but do provide a courtesy shuttle from the end of the trip back to your vehicle at the put-in. Vehicle rentals and a map to the river location can be arranged in Whitehorse.

The upper Tatshenshini is located on the Haines Road, a 2.5 – 3 hour ride from Whitehorse – an extremely scenic drive in itself.

The Tutshi is one exciting ride, but it is not for everybody. It is hard to stop in the canyon, and “The Drops” are steep. There will be an option to walk all “The Drops” if you feel uncomfortable rafting them.

35-mile paddle/cycle/run along Southeast Alaska’s Chilkat River Registration Deadline is July 1 at 11:59PM The CHILKAT CHALLENGE is destined to become one of the world’s great races but it will be more than just fun and a test of skill, strength, and stamina in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Beginning at Mosquito Lake ~30 miles north of Haines, Alaska, paddlers will race down the Chilkat River, past the Tlingit Village of Klukwan and through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home to the world’s largest congregation of bald eagles. After an 8-mile paddle (canoe or kayak) racers will swap their boats for bikes and cycle 20 miles alongside the Chilkat River on the Haines Highway. The final leg will be an 7–mile run along the Chilkat River from Haines to Letnikof Cove. From Mosquito Lake State Park to Letnikoft Cove racers will be surrounded by snow-capped mountains and glaciers, giant forests of spruce, hemlock, and cottonwood trees, bald eagles, and maybe a bull moose or mama grizzly bear!

T

here’s a new enterprise to the Yukon pizza scene. It’s big, unmistakably blue, and it’s serving up local ingredients atop a wood-fired crust, slope style.

Ski Bum Pizza Co. is Yukon’s first pizza food truck, and the brainchild of longtime Yukon resident Eric Telford and ‘za loving, culinary wizard, Tara Paczkowski.

The engaged duo seem to have a lot in common, and two of those things have been fused into one, delicious marriage: fresh tracks and artisan pizza.

After discussing dreams that would allow Telford and Paczkowski more freedom and mobility, they decided on a food truck venture, which seemed a perfect fit with Paczkowski’s natural kitchen talents, and their shared passion for pizza.

“We both love pizza and we wanted to do one thing really well,” Telford says. “We didn’t want a complicated, stressful operation that would require us to waste anything.”

That’s why Ski Bum Pizza Co. has a refined menu based on what is fresh, seasonal and local.

Telford says that Paczkowski, who is originally from Kamloops, has been a “driving force in developing connections with local growers and planning ingredient combos.”

Their menu showcases organic marinara sauce and vegetables sourced locally from Whitehorse and Atlin farms.

The ski slope themed menu will generally consist of three to four pizzas- a Margherita (with fresh basil, herbs and mozzarella), a seasonal vegetable combo, and a deluxe with meat and veggies.

Though the featured flavours will change depending on what is seasonal, Telford says pizza loving Yukoners can always expect super fresh ingredients, a light and airy handmade crust that has been

The Atlin based entrepreneurs will be serving wood-fired slices this summer out their food truck, a bright blue, retired Grumman mail truck.

At first glance, it’s hard to imagine a brick oven fits inside their converted truck, but as as Telford explains, it does, and with just enough room for a small nook for Paczkowski, who is seven months pregnant, to rest.

“We found it on Craigslist in Vancouver,” Telford recounts of their late night impulse purchase.

“We bought it sight unseen.”

the wood-fired pizza operation and Telford credits the food truck company, as well as the Bread Stone Ovens Company in Texas for making it all happen.

“Pizza making is a weird community,” laughs Telford. “Everyone is open and helpful, and strangely, you’re kind of on the same team, no matter where you live.”

“It’s not the ideal vehicle as it’s really tight, but they customized it so we have enough room,” Telford says.

The pair will be working in close proximity next to a 900 degree wood-fired oven, but adventure seems to be something that comes natural for the couple, who met two years ago. Telford and Paczkowski are currently on maternity and paternity leave while they await the arrival of

their baby in July.

“It’s been an adventure for sure, but it feels like the right fit for us. It’s working out so far,” Telford says.

This summer, Ski Bum Pizza Co. can be found based in Atlin from Sunday to Tuesday, and in Whitehorse from Wednesday to Saturday, at the corner of Steele and Third Ave. Every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. they will be at the Fireweed Community Market in Shipyards Park, and throughout the summer at Winterlong Brewing, summer music festivals like Atlin Arts and Music Festival, as well as, “weddings, sporting events, and probably at some of the random bush parties that make Yukon summers the best.”

Come fall, Telford and Paczkowski plan on taking their mobile show on the road. Their plan is

to partner with Over Time Beer Works in Kimberley, B.C., where their “slope” pizza will be right at home in the Kootenays. (It’s called “slope pizza” because it’s sold on the slopes of the ski hill).

After living the ski bum, pie slinging lifestyle from January through March, they will return to the Yukon for April. By selling enough pizza in the spring, summer and fall, they hope to shred mountains all winter long.

“We’ll be spending as much time as we can in Atlin for the shoulder seasons, and then in Whitehorse for spring and summer,” Telford says.

On May 13th, Ski Bum Pizza Co. had their first crack at serving wood-fired pizzas at their opening celebration at Winterlong Brewing Company. Their featured pizzas included a Yukon Beets pizza with goat cheese, walnuts and olive oil, and a Yukon-made pepperoni pizza with peppers and aged cheddar.

“We’re looking to support the whole food truck scene and if the City of Whitehorse is keen to support more food truck activity in more locations, I think it can grow significantly,” Telford says.

While Telford notes their current setup doesn’t allow them to have a larger menu, their pizzas will change daily depending on what’s fresh and available.

“What we lack in range, we make up for in freshness, flavour and quality,” Telford says. “We’re hoping to serve the freshest and most interesting pizzas in Whitehorse.”
