Look Who’s Parking in Whitehorse O ne of the world’s most urban birds has parked itself in downtown White-

horse.

The house sparrow, a small chirpy songbird, is now a familiar sight at downtown grocery store parking lots and other places where food is handy.

Unrelated to North American sparrows, which come here each spring, house sparrows are kin to an African weaver finch. Introduced from Europe to Brooklyn in the mid-1850s to help hunt bugs, they showed up in Ontario in 1870 and are now resident in most North American cities. Once established, they are non-migratory and stay close to reliable food sources. (That includes insects caught in car grills in summer.)

First reported here in the l990s, a single nesting pair was confirmed a decade ago. Now, chirpy flocks are seen and heard downtown almost daily. There have been surprisingly few sightings in other neighbourhoods.

Over a hundred individuals were observed there at Christmas, with 110 counted one day in March at the Alpine Bakery – a house sparrow hotspot.

House sparrows have also been reported in larger numbers (and declines) in urban Northwest Territories, with some even recorded in Nunavut and Alaska.

The bird has a large head and stout-chest. Males sport

Their nests are “untidy” conicalshaped nests in crevices including store-front facades and light standards.

Local observer Tracy Allard suggests the bird has adapted to northern winters by using vehicle wheel wells to stay warm – hence the preference for large store parking lots. Biologist Jim Hawkings says warmer winters and a ready food supply may have boosted the Yukon’s population.

In the south, house sparrows, which also eat seeds, are considered a farm pest.

In many large cities they are derided as a “blight” like starlings.

They can compete with native species at city bird feeders and bird houses. But their numbers are dropping in many areas, particularly in the United

While attracted to humanmade structures – they have been caught up in the shopping carts outside one grocery store, our house sparrows haven’t ruffled a lot of feathers here so far.

Dr. Katie Aitken, an ornithology instructor at Yukon College, says it’s “unknown” if Yukon’s house sparrow population will expand to become a problem downtown or with bird lovers. She admits she has a soft spot for them. “It was the first species I identified when I started birding as a child down south,” she told me outside the Independent Grocer as I watched a sparrow climb into a lamp-post.

Wherever people go, so goes the house sparrow. I’ve enjoyed their company on the beach in Hawaii, and their noisy cheeps inside airports in Victoria and Halifax.

(They can learn to activate automatic doors – once they were seen in Superstore’s dairy section.)

Some tallies estimate there are 50 million pairs on the planet.

S

tories are invaluable teachers, says B.C. author Caroline Woodward, they have the ability to “give us whole worlds.”

Old stories, too, are relevant artefacts that help us gain perspective on how much, or how little, progress we have made.

Fictional stories, the writer continues, are able to relate emotive experiences in a way that nonfiction books can’t. That is their strength, she explains, “[Fictional] stories allow us access to hopes and dreams, and working conditions and feeling sorry for horses in the cold — all the things that dry history books gloss over.”

I’m speaking with the author and part-time lighthouse keeper just after the re-publication of her book Alaska Highway TwoStep. First published in 1993, the unusual mystery novel is set in part along the legendary route and the release of its new edition coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Highway’s completion this year.

A road of expansive views, vast wilderness and remote truck stops sprinkled between our northern communities, the Alaska Highway is also littered with an entangled history of calamities and hardwon achievements. It is novelists like Woodward, who mix their creative art with this past, that help keep those stories alive.

And while it’s been over 20 years since Alaska Highway TwoStep was released, updating it only required a few aesthetic nips and tucks. However, even a simple change can be significant.

In the new edition, Woodward renamed the ferry “Queen of the

North” (the real-life BC Ferries boat that ran aground in 2006), the fictional “Queen of Hartley Bay,” after the town where many of the people who bravely set out to aid the sinking boat and its passengers came from. “The great joy of writing fiction is you get to right some wrongs,” she says of the revision, “and you get to honour some things you want to honour.”

Other edits include smoothing and refining the dialogue around the Site C Dam, which is not overtly named in the novel but integral to its plot. This contentious enterprise near her hometown in the Peace River region was another incentive to republish, Woodward notes. “I spend a lot of time writing letters to anyone who will listen, about how destructive this project is for all sorts of reasons — upstream and downstream,” she says.

It’s been more than two decades since the novel’s debut, but the dam is still in a loop of legal challenges and environmental reviews as it goes forward.

How stories are similar to, or in contrast with, our current situation is what keeps even the oldest stories relevant. In Alaska Highway Two-Step the Site C Dam scenario shows how conditions can stagnate. Two other plotlines, however, prove how fast change can happen. The tale of a freespirited woman trapped by the circumstances of the age she was born in is told in parallel with one of her nieces, who is able to live a solo existence free of those social pressures just one generation later; and the timeline before and during the Alaska Highway’s construction offers a glimpse into that time and a Yukon of bygone days.

As seen in Woodward’s novel, perspectives from the past can help us understand the present.

This is part of the magic of stor-

ies: to “help create empathy and understanding,” Woodward says.

Which is why keeping stories alive may, as she states, “make us better people.”

A Creative Way to Spend Your Vacation

Early-bird registration on now for the Keno City Music and Art Workshop

rtists, musicians, songwriters, general creative types and arts lovers alike might want to think about taking a little vacation time this summer. The Keno City Music and Art Workshop For Adults is returning for its second year, with workshops running July 24th through to August 7th.

The event runs for two weeks, in week long blocks, with different workshops and artists offered in each block. Participants register for the week of their choice, and can register for both weeks if they wish, too.

Workshops are run by Yukon visual artists Nicole Bauberger, Heidi Marion, Lillian Loponen and Dieter Weise and Yukon musicians Kim Beggs, Sarah Macdougall, Barbara Chamberlin, BJ Mclean, Cindy Harder and Travis Petkau. The topics are varied, from songwriting to acrylic painting to

This year’s event is a little different from the last in that it is two weeks long instead of one and there more time between workshops – changes that were made based on feedback from last years artists and attendees, according to participating music and organizer of the workshops Kim Beggs.

“Facilitating workshops takes up a lot of mental space (for the artists). With two weeks instead of one, artists teach on week and then spend the rest of the time creating and working on their own projects,” Beggs says.

Workshops start in the late morning, with two hours between each workshop and free time to just create, work on projects outside of class or “just write in your journal,” says Beggs.

In the evening there will be coffee houses and venues for the art created during the day to be displayed, and campfires for relaxing, sharing and storytelling, although all these events are optional. There is one day of free time so people can explore and enjoy Keno.

“Some people are just more comfortable sharing around a campfire… and everyone is on their own time,” Beggs says.

Participants will receive 24 hours worth of workshops over the course of the week, plus two hours of one-on-one mentorship outside of the time spent in the workshops, with extra private lessons available for negotiation with the artists at an additional hourly rate.

In addition to the workshops, all participants will be given a set of personal cards, printed with their favourite piece of art created during the workshop and a recording of a song they wrote during their stay. The supplies needed to participate in the workshops will be provided, although if people want to do additional work outside of the workshops they should bring their own supplies.

Beggs stresses that these workshops are, as the name suggests, for adults, and that participants are expected to be independent and responsible for themselves and their own meals while they are there. People can either book a room at the Silvermoon Bunkhouse or stay at the campground.

Most rooms have already been booked by the artists teaching this event, however there may still be some rooms available there, too, Beggs says.

Special discounted rates are

available for participants at the Keno City Hotel. There are several restaurants in Keno for those who don’t feel like cooking.

“If someone didn’t have a lot of money they could camp and the campground and just cook your own food,” Beggs says.

The event is a partnership with Yukon Women in Music and the Keno Club. Beggs adds that the event is looking for sponsors for next year, to help pay for art supplies, the artists fees and to create a fund to help people who might not have the money to attend the event.

Beggs stresses the workshops aren’t just for professionals, but for anyone who enjoy being creative and wants to take some time to do that.

“Artists can empower people with their creativity,” she says.

Can You Do the Cancan, Kate?

Roots of Klondike Gold Rush entertainment stretch back to 1892, 1893 and Coney Island and the Chicago World’s Fair

Klondike Kate’s first job was as a chorus girl on Coney Island, where the cancan had been a fixture from the Island’s earliest days

uring the 1890s, the United States was a melting pot of entertainment - and vaudeville became the perfect vehicle to showcase this wealth of diversity. From New York to Victoria, B.C., vaudeville reigned supreme as the most popular entertainment in every city and many small towns.

The key to vaudeville’s success was that it allowed audiences to sample a wide variety of short acts that included everything from juggling, animal acts, comedy, serious drama, opera, contortionists, musical virtuosos, Irish jigs, and of course the “authentic French cancan” as it was often billed.

By the 1890s the cancan was a feature of every vaudeville show large enough to employ a chorus line.

One of the defining moments that was to shape Yukon history happened in 1892 when the young Kathleen Eloise Rockwell saw the advertisement in a New York newspaper which read:

No experience necessary The job was in a Coney Island theatre and she auditioned and got it, thus setting in motion the amazing career of Klondike Kate.

Another young dancer who was destined for the Yukon spotlight was Cad Wilson, who was learning the ropes as a vaudeville dancer at the Madison Square Garden Theatre in 1892. Both of these chorus girls were to become huge stars during the Klondike Gold Rush, but for now they were in the chorus.

machinery, technology, art and culture.. The Fair created a great deal of employment for musicians who played in the makeshift saloons that haunted the outskirts of the fairgrounds. It was here that a new music could be heard called “ragtime,” so named for its infectious syncopated (ragged) beat.

From the beginning, cancan dancers loved the ragtime beat and the two became connected from this period forward. Even today, over a century later, the image of a ragtime pianist gussied up with a derby hat, striped shirt and arm-bands, only seems completed when there is a chorus girl or two in the picture.

In our next instalment, the cancan, ragtime, Cad Wilson and Kathleen Rockwell arrive in Dawson City, Yukon – the “Paris of the North.”

Creative flow meets yoga flow at True North Massage and Yoga yoga class that combines gentle poses with massage.

Both MacLean and Padfield have each practiced as massage therapists for eight years. They met when MacLean visited Padfield for a massage herself. Instantly they developed a bond based on their common interest in combining yoga with massage therapy.

“At the time I hadn’t had a chance to talk with someone who does both massage and yoga like me,” MacLean says. “It was a great experience to meet someone with so much shared interest, so I talked through the whole massage.”

Padfield had become enamoured with the idea of owning a yoga studio for several years after completing her teacher training in Calgary. When she moved up to the Yukon with her partner, she began to re-envision her dream to fit the Whitehorse market.

MacLean, who is from Whitehorse, has been practicing yoga since she was 12. She used to go with a friend’s aunt to a studio above Sanchez Cantina. As a teenager in the MAD program at the Wood Street School, yoga was part of the daily routine.

In her massage therapy practice, she began to notice that clients needed something more than occasional massages if they were to find healing and wellness.

“I was seeing patterns with my clients where they would be really awesome and open when they left, and then I would see them two weeks later, and they would

hile Whitehorse’s newest yoga studio True North Massage and Yoga just opened, it’s already setting itself apart from the other offerings in town.

The yoga studio, located at 407 Black Street, opened mid-January.

Since opening, its owners Sheila MacLean and Stephanie Padfield have set their sights on community partnerships and a hybrid approach to the practice.

With a focus on beginners to the practice, MacLean and Padfield have built their class offerings on an understanding that entering a new routine can be far more fun when there is some creativity involved.

This led them to develop Yarn Yoga in collaboration with the Itsy-Bitsy Yarn Store. Created for those who love to knit or crochet, the class combines an hour of flow and restorative yoga with an hour of working on your latest yarnbased project.

“Sometimes yoga can be a bit tricky to get into,” MacLean says. “[People] might not do yoga because they heard it was good for them once, but they might do it if – say for example – they are a knitter…now there is a class where they can go and do a bit of yoga beforehand… and then they sit and knit.”

Another of the duo’s hybrid classes take advantage of their training as massage therapists.

A Swiss Tradition in the North

Swiss cheese fondue can be enjoyed at the Wolf’s Den Restaurant, south of Whitehorse

f course, you have noticed that many people from Switzerland visit the Yukon in summer. Did you ever ask yourself what they do in wintertime?

Here is the answer: They enjoy a relatively mild winter in Switzerland and every now and then they eat a Swiss cheese fondue.

Fondue has a long tradition in Switzerland and Swiss people claim to have invented this dish, even if some regions in France and Italy do the same.

Originally, a cheese fondue consists of a blend of cheeses,

wine and seasoning, melted in a ceramic pot, and is eaten by dipping bread into the cheese using long forks.

The dish originated in the Alps when farmers were using ingredients that were available in the winter: cheese, peasant bread and wine. Lately people started dipping other bits of food such as potatoes, apples or pears into the cheese.

Every region in Switzerland has its own blend of two or more types of cheese and claims it to be the best. Gruyère or Vacherin are

often in the blend, but many Swiss families and restaurants keep secret about their unique blend.

To eat a fondue is a very social thing – you seldom see someone eating a fondue on their own. A funny evening is guaranteed if you apply one of the many existing informal “penalty rules.” For example, you must kiss your table mates if you lose your bread in the cheese or if you forget to stir the pot when you dip.

It’s not just a cliché – most Swiss people love cheese fondue.

And some of them fall in love with the Yukon and they leave Switzerland forever. Two of them are Yvonne and Harry Ochsner. They came to the Yukon 15 years ago, and they brought their Swiss recipes with them. Harry, who was a carpenter in Switzerland, built the Wolf’s Den Restaurant on his own. In 2002 they started to serve Swiss specialties to both tourists and locals at their authentic restaurant, located 15 miles (24 km) south of Whitehorse.

Yukon Wildflowers that Bloom in April

The Prairie Crocus is in the Ranunculaceae, buttercup family, but botanist are still trying to find out which species it exactly is

L

ast year we had an early spring and I found the first prairie crocus blooming on April 1st.

Most years the crocus blooms near the end of April. If you want to become a crocus hunter, don’t wait for all the snow to melt. If the daytime temperature is above zero for three weeks, start climbing a southern exposed hillside.

Look for the fuzzy heads of crocus

Androsace septentrionalis Primulaceae, primrose family Tiny flowers, quite common and it will be growing abundantly when you find a patch

poking up in the barren landscape.

Along with the first crocus there are other flowers blooming, some inconspicuous and most of them tiny. Look for them on those sun-warmed ridges or hillsides.

Most of the flowers, mentioned here, also grow in other environments. For example, the prairie crocus also blooms in open forest later in the spring.

then I show here, such as the kinnickinnick, which has deliciously tasting red-rimmed white little bells.

Some other berries flower early. Take time to look for the delightful yellow soapberry blossom.

Last year, I recall coming upon a plant that I had never seen in flower, because it flowers so early.

I forgot which one, so I will probably miss it again, because unlike the effusively blooming crocus, not all wildflowers show their beauty in such exuberant and abundant ways.

One that is almost equally showy is the townsendia; I have never seen it flowering in April, but it might bloom that early. I have only found it on two locations on the bluffs of the Takhini River.

Among those early blooms there also is the so-called pseudo flower Puccinia monoica, which is a fungus mimicking a flower that grows on certain plants of the mustard family.

And then there is the Douglasia, which is a pink cushion flower.

However, this flower doesn’t grow on hillsides; it only grows just above treeline on southern exposed mountain slopes. Extremely rewarding for an early spring hike, they make it a surreal experience.

What it Means to Be a Man

Documentary questioning our narrow definition of masculinity screens April 11 at the Yukon College

I

was 12 years old when I first remember putting on a mask to face the day. My mask was that that of a joker, a dependable friend, a fun guy. I used it to hide the sadness and helplessness I felt over my parent’s disintegrating marriage.

I used it to face down the taunts, jeers, pushes and punches of those who needed to express their physical superiority.

I used it to prove I was “enough of a man” to those who would question it. I used it to show that nothing was wrong, everything was okay, there was nothing to see here.

I grew to hate my mask. Yet, I was terrified of removing it. Terrified of being seen as I truly was.

The more I disconnected from my feelings, the safer I felt.

The Mask You Live In is a documentary that focuses on the mask of masculinity that men learn to wear. It looks at how the mask is constructed, the many forms and faces it takes on, how it is reinforced daily by our friends, family, culture and the media. It looks at how this mask is hurting our boys and men and fueling the rise of toxic masculinity we see expressed in sexual assault, suicide, and mass shootings.

It’s a challenging film to watch.

Many of us use phrases like “Man up”, “Be a man”, “Grow a pair”, out of love and out of fear for our boys – fear that they will be too soft to stand against the world.

Such phrases also police a narrow definition of what “being a man” looks like in this day and age.

As boys become men we learn

Joe Erhmann (left) is a former NFL player who now speaks out against the hyper-masculine culture of American sport. Erhmann is a powerful voice in the film The Mask You Live In message of hope. We meet men who have the courage to remove their mask, men willing to broaden the definition of masculinity and model it for the boys and men in their lives. They include an exNFL coach teaching leadership skills, a single dad learning from his son how to talk about emotions, a former jock rediscovering the sensitivity he suppressed as a child, a newly-sober teen finding brotherhood in a men’s circle rather than a street gang.

The common thread to each of their stories is the opening up, the asking for help, being willing to

to distrust and disconnect from our feelings. Strong emotions are associated with femininity, and we are taught that femininity is weak. As young men we learn to numb ourselves with work, video games, sports, sex, social media, porn, drugs and alcohol. We isolate ourselves and try to bury our pain, our frustration, our rage.

Asking for help, processing strong emotions in a healthy way, has not been modeled for us. In the Yukon, men resort to suicide at a rate seven times greater than women.

speak honestly about their pain, and being received with love and understanding.

Last year I developed the courage to remove my mask. I stopped numbing myself and discovered healthy ways to be with uncomfortable and challenging emotions. It takes work - after 30 years, the mask was stuck on pretty good, and it would replace itself again and again - but you find other men with the courage to remove their mask, and it gets easier. It is painful, but you also rediscover joy, fellowship, peace and a deeper ease moving through

the world.

We need more men with the courage to remove their masks.

The film The Mask You Live In is a 2015 documentary film written, directed, and produced by American filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom. It screens on Tuesday, April 11 at 6 p.m. at Yukon College in room C1440 (the glass class), with a discussion to follow.

ur identities are multifaceted and complex, in order to address gender-based inequality and violence we need to find ways to hear each other in order to effectively create social change that benefits everyone in the end. No one should be left behind.

In keeping with this spirit Les EssentElles, the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre, Yukon Status of Women Council, and

the Yukon Women’s Transition Home Society held a poster contest early March. It was decided that since March encompassed both International Women’s Day and the International Day to End Racial Discrimination, why not celebrate them both by having youth show us what they thought of working together across identities. Choosing the winners was no easy task and we are proud to showcase the three winners. Thank you to the Women’s Directorate for providing funding and What’s Up Yukon for being a supportive and involved community partner throughout this project!

Southwest of Salem plays April 9 at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre American society that fights for people who are wrongfully convicted, and lobbied to have them take up the case.

“There’s Otto in his little cabin in the woods in Mendenhall, and there’s this case all the way down there… it’s amazing the way it all came together,” Turner says.

“It doesn’t say so in the film, because it happened after it was finished, but the women have now been completely exonerated,” Turner says. This means that they not only been freed, but have been cleared of all charges and the charges have been wiped from their records.

“That’s why it’s so great to have Otto with us, to speak to these things and update us,” she says. “Otto is really humble about everything,” Turner adds.

Turner says films like this are important reminders of the battles the LGBTQ community has faced and continues to face. “We really need films like this,” Turner says. “We need them to remind ourselves of of what happened here so that we don’t let it happen again.”

The film plays on Sunday, April 9, which is the closing night of the festival.

“It’s going to be a really great night – this is a film I’m really excited about,” says Turner.

he OUT North Queer Film Festival brings film lovers an American documentary with a local twist on April 9.

Southwest of Salem tells the true story of four young lesbian women accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls and using them in satanic rituals in the early 1990s in San Antonio,Texas.

They were wrongfully convicted and spent years in jail before, in 2008, befriending Yukoner Darrell Otto, a professor at the Yukon College, who set about trying to clear their name.

The documentary uses a mixture of interviews, home videos and news to reconstruct the story.

“They call it Southwest of Salem because it was pretty much a witch hunt,” says Rian Turner, the artistic coordinator for the festival. “And that’s all part of this idea (some people had) about lesbians being like witches.”

Otto first read about the case in the news and became curious enough to write to the women while they were still in prison.

Eventually, he became convinced of their innocence after noting certain details of the case did not add up, Turner says, and set out to free them. Otto contacted the Innocence Program, which is an

Wicked Ram is a hiking, sheep hunting booty camp designed with a Yukon lifestyle in mind

yan MacGillivray has been sheep hunting for 10 years.

Three years ago, he had the idea to start a boot camp for sheep hunters. He did this because he knew the participants in the camp would push him to train harder for the sheep hunting season.

“Well, I wanted people to work out with,” he says. “You push yourself way harder with other people.”

Pushing yourself is essential if you want a successful sheep hunt. Because think about where that animal lives: on the tops and sides of mountains. It can be a full day slog up a mountain, with a 60 pound backpack.

There is no guarantee the sheep you seek will be at the top of that peak. They may be down the side, or a peak over. Or down the side two peaks over. The hunter has to be close enough to ensure the sheep he or she is spotting is regulation. That means belly crawling and bushwhacking, after climbing up and down whichever peaks are between them and the sheep.

MacGillivray designed his fitness camp to ensure a hunter has stamina. “You’ll get to the top of the mountain with more energy and you won’t be too stiff to get out of the tent the next morning,” he says. Because, let’s face it. You may not spot any sheep on the first day.

Last season, MacGillivray “hauled out two sheep and a caribou.”

He didn’t say where.

He wanted to make sure they were working. And they were.

The original intent behind MacGillivray’s boot camps, however successful, has nonetheless evolved. It turns out there is a higher demand for a boot camp for hikers. At year three, about 40 per cent of the participants are hunters, and the rest want to get

ready for a hiking season. Macgillivray learned that “there’s no one out there training people to climb mountains.”

He’s come up with a name for his camp: Mountain Fitness Conditioning. “If you just throw on a backpack and go on a hike, you’ll hate it,” he says. “If you don’t hurt yourself it will be a miracle.”

Another evolution in the bootcamp is its length. The first year it

was only one month, but that’s not enough time to condition people to climb a mountain. This year it will be three months of training, three days a week.

In April there will still be cold and snow, but Macgillivray realized that’s better than July, when no one shows up to class because, “July’s too crazy in the Yukon.”

He realized he had to get Yukoners in shape for their July plans.

The first month of training is to get muscles moving right, and to get your brain firing right. Gradually participants will start adding weight, with the aim of getting people used to carrying 60 pounds for an hour without hurting themselves.

This year, as well, there is an additional class. Taiga. It’s for adults and kids. There are currently three people signed up, and MacGillivray says he’ll take up to 10 adults, each with a child. The other class, Alpine, already has 21 “tentatively signed up.” And that’s as much as he’ll take.

The groups work out up Grey Mountain, where there’s a big hill to practice on. They also do body resistance training – lunges, squats, push ups, airplanes.

This year MacGillivray is adding another new element, something that will show participants their progress. Every Friday the Taiga group will hike up Haekel Hill for 20 minutes, and the Alpine group for 30 minutes. When the 20 or 30 minutes is up, each participant will mark their spot with a number and a specific colour of flagging tape.

The following week they’ll do it again, and see how much further they can get. As far as MacGillivray knows, the fastest anyone’s climbed that hill is in 34 minutes.

His goal is to have a participant get to the top by the end of the training cycle.
