“L

ucie asked me to take a Latin dance class in 2001 while she was doing a minor in Spanish at SaintThomas university in Fredericton,” says Salsa Yukon cofounder Michel Morris.

“My first session was painful and to be honest I just wanted to play hockey,” he laughingly admits.

By the time he moved to the Yukon from New Brunswick with his wife, Lucie Desaulniers, salsa was in his blood.

“My favourite thing about salsa is dancing to a song that I love with my partner, Lucie,” he says.

“It’s an indescribable feeling.”

So much so that his only trepidation about moving here was that he couldn’t find anywhere in Whitehorse to dance salsa. That’s when Desaulniers had the idea of founding Salsa Yukon in order to teach and promote Latin dance in the territory.

The trend caught on and the couple have been teaching eager Yukoners to Salsa ever since.

“People in the Yukon are really enthusiastic to learn and open

to try new things,” says Morris.

“My favourite thing about teaching salsa is to help people learn, have fun and connect with other people.”

Next Saturday they’re hosting their semi-regular Salsa Social at the Rising Sun Lounge, which is on Wood St. between Front and Second Avenue.

“Wear comfortable shoes that slide,” Morris says. “Bring a bottle of water – and an open mind and positive energy.”

Morris says that Latin dance is a great way to connect with people, noting that many newcomers to the Territory have used Salsa Yukon as a way to build community in their new home. “It’s a safe place where people can learn and have fun and not feel pressured. You come here you do the best you can, you have fun, you dance. And they become your little dance family.”

Morris and Desaulniers can be credited with popularizing Latin dance in the Yukon and making it more accessible to everyone.

“When we started there were underground salsa parties, but

you had to be part of that network. Since we’ve been teaching, people have started to DJ themselves and some former students are teaching private classes. Our events are well attended.”

The classes are open to people of all ages.

“We’ve had people that were 15 and people that were 87,” says Morris.

Morris says he’s excited that Vicki Durant, the owner the The Rising Sun Lounge, is hosting the Salsa Saturday event this month.

“We are really grateful to Antoinette’s, Burnt Toast Café and The Wheelhouse Restaurant for pairing up with us to host Salsa Nights over those last seven years.”

The event starts at 8p.m. on Saturday, April 8th, and is open to everyone. The Rising Sun Lounge is located at 102 Wood St. For more information check out the Salsa Yukon Facebook page.

he fiddling tradition is alive and well in the Yukon thanks to the Fiddleheads, a group of young fiddlers ranging in age from seven to fourteen years old. The local youth fiddle club is teaming up with groups in Haines Junction and Dawson City to create a CD celebrating the rich Fiddle tradition of the Yukon. They will be celebrating the release of their debut album, A Yukon Fiddle Celebration, on April 30th at the Yukon Arts Centre. The CD features songs composed by fiddlers from all over the Yukon, performed by 39 young fiddlers from three different communities.

The Whitehorse Fiddleheads will be joined by the Treble Makers of Haines Junction, and a couple of members of the Dawson Fiddle Club. All three groups collaborated on the CD and will be performing at the April 30th show.

While Fiddleheads Yukon was established almost two decades ago, the Treble Makers are only in their second year. “Some of these kids went from never having played a violin before to being able to learn and play a song beautifully for the CD in only two years!” says Fiddleheads’ Artistic Director, Keitha Clark, “it was a real highlight for me, having those kids be a part of it.”

The show will also include an original play created by Mary Sloan and performed by many of the Fiddlehead members. The play is done in the Style of Robert

Routledge’s fiddles, his eighth, that he built from Yukon wood. My favorite tune in the show is the one he wrote, ‘Three White Birds.’ Maybe the fiddle remembers the tune and that is why it is so much fun to play the tune on it?”

Arriving in the Yukon. This was Condor’s last flight of the summer, the plane was half empty, I had a second seat to myself, and that’s even cooler!

sit on the 10K seat. For the first time in my life, I travelled middle class and it’s pretty cool, I have to admit! Tons of space for my legs, despite the big bag at my feet, and even more attentive hostesses.

This was Condor’s last flight of the summer, the plane was half empty, I had a second seat to myself, and that’s even cooler!

At 4 p.m. the plane took off from Frankfurt. I was a little less stressed than on my first plane (thrilling, but no sweaty hands… small victory!)

As soon as the cruising altitude was reached, the first meal was served. It’s 4:52 p.m… Each time I have a long flight, I have the feeling I’m forced to eat (or that I turned into a hobbit, like Pippin and his second, or his third dinners)! I tried to taste it while

watching The Big Short, but I wasn’t captivated, so I switched to Kung Fu Panda 3. Much better!

Between my book, my two little naps, two more meals, and the flight over Greenland – during which I was in complete bliss – the time passed relatively quickly because it was already time for landing. Some turbulences, quickly forgotten thanks to magnificent views of the great spaces that I came to look for, and here we were, on Canadian ground! Now, serious things could begin: off to customs to validate my Working Holiday Visa.

A fellow named “Dan” welcomed me for my entry into the territory. By a lucky chance, he spoke French. I realized fairly quickly that it wasn’t ordinary for Whitehorse customs officers to receive “clients” for a Working Holiday Visa, especially when Newcomer he asked me to visa go downtown to the federal office the next day to get my working permit.

It bothered me at the time, because I didn’t have a car yet and also because my hosts live 45 minutes out of town. (I learned later that this was a pretty common distance for

Yukon!) I answered that I wasn’t in a hurry since my “driver” couldn’t pick me up until 7 p.m. So Dan replied: “Get your luggage, wait and as soon as all the passengers of your flight have entered the territory, I’ll take care of your visa.”

My suitcase arrived and I waited. Finally, Dan beckoned me to follow him. He collected all my documents and disappeared into his office. From there began a long wait… He ended up coming back, a little annoyed because he wouldn’t be able to deliver my Working Holiday Visa today.

My record was complete and presented no problem, but because of new software, he ticked a box he shouldn’t have, and to correct it he needed the intervention of a visa officer, who didn’t work this Sunday.

So, Dan suggested that I go downtown to the federal office the next day (back to the starting point). I waited an hour and a half in the immigration offices for nothing in the end – even if I did have nothing better to do…

In an empty airport, I waited a little more than an hour: Marcelle arrived shortly before 7:30 p.m. and on my way to Alayuk - a tourism and competition kennel on Annie Lake Road.

The Woods, by Amber McMillan, gives a personal account of exploring small-town life in the Pacific Northwest

After Toronto’s worst winter in decades, Amber McMillan is finished with the cold hustle of the big city. She’s tired of the urban trudge, tired of the commute, tired of neighbours whinging, and now she wants out.

So along with her partner, Nate, and daughter, Lily, she leaves Toronto to find a life with less emotional, and literal, congestion.

They move to Protection Island, a small community off the coast of east Vancouver Island, to find a simpler existence beyond the busy hubbub of the big smoke. In The Woods, McMillan documents the first year of their journey and the mix of returns while adjusting to their new life in the more rural Pacific Northwest.

Anyone who has lived in a small town knows it’s not simply a life of leisure. True, it’s often quieter, access to nature is undeniably easier and the connections you have within the community are tighter, or at least more personal.

But, as McMillan soon finds out, those luxuries come with other issues attached: the lack of amenities, creature comforts and other modern-day conveniences are very real and time-consuming.

And then there’s those friendly neighbours you see everyday who double as the nosiest people you’ve ever met and are brazenly unafraid to publicly pass judgement on your private matters.

Protection Island is not actually that remote – it’s only 1.5 kilometers away from Nanaimo, the second-largest city on Vancouver Island – but it’s a far cry from their condo life in Toronto.

Where they traded in a busy train commute, they now find themselves dependant on a boat with a faulty motor; they traded in the silence of anonymity for the squabble of small-town politics and the stress of jobs with responsibility to the

stress of not having one at all.

It’s an oft-romanticized picture — moving away from the hustle and bustle to live with more connection, as small-town folk do in their slow-paced ways and, as McMillan suggests, living a “nobler” life.

But what the author grapples with realizing is: small-town life isn’t easier or better, it’s simply different. As every life situation is, each with their own pattern of conveniences and inconveniences that you’ll have to match together and find the blend that works best for you. It’s about choice, and the grass may alway seem greener until you are able to weigh the variables honestly for the lifestyle you desire.

The Woods is filled with some rather standard observations of small-town living, however, chapters of the author’s personal journaling are spiced up by the inclusion of historical narratives which add more concrete intrigue into a book of personal experience.

This is a conversational read, and maybe a timely one reminding us to see the positives in where we live and maybe even find gratitude as we grunt through the last stretches of winter.

Tombstone: a Cardboard Western offers a dusty tale of human, cyborg and robot love

hat does it take to make a puppet show that is also a stage show and a live-action video all in one?

A script, a bunch of performers, some music. Lights, cameras, action.

And cardboard. Miles of cardboard, according to Edward Westerhuis.

“We go to different stores, to the dump behind their stores.

The stuff from Mark’s (Work Wearhouse) is nice and thin. It has a really thin weave, with small ridges, so that’s good for really small, detailed work,” he explains.

“When we’re looking for bigger stuff, we’re looking for singlewalled stuff that has a pretty firm paper weight. The more you look at it, you can really tell the difference in quality.”

Westerhuis is a community art coordinator in Surrey, B.C. He’s also one of the originators of Tombstone: a Cardboard Western, the latest Ramshackle Theatre project, which debuts this weekend at the Yukon Arts Centre.

He’s a man who clearly knows his cardboard, which isn’t surprising. He practically lives with it.

“We gather a bunch of boxes and then we cut things down. The final product might be really small, but the junk pile of the things we cut away is huge,” he laughs.

“The whole studio floor is completely covered in a whole layer of the stuff. Sometimes the mess

can be as beautiful as the puppets themselves.”

Of course, it takes more than just discarded boxes to create the human, cyborg and robotic players in Tombstone’s interspecies love triangle. It also takes lots of shish kebab skewers and chopsticks, hockey tape, magnets and hot glue.

“I use super-long glue sticks, and I’ve gone through hundreds. I can’t give you any real numbers, but I would say upwards of 500 glue sticks, for sure,” Westerhuis guesses.

Another key element is time.

“It’s terrifying. Maybe almost a thousand hours. No, more than that. It’s been like a constant back-burner project that’s been going on for almost four years.

And that’s just his own time.

Add in the efforts of Ramshackle’s artistic director, Brian Fidler, and the other three core members of the Tombstone creative team, and the whole thing skyrockets.

“There have been stints when we’ve been working three weeks solid on it. In combined human hours, it’s through the roof, for sure.”

Westerhuis had worked as a cinematographer before a writer’s strike caused a slowdown in Vancouver’s film and TV industry, so he and his wife decided to head North till things improved.

“When I got to the Yukon, I didn’t know anyone. I still wanted

to make movies, so I did the lonely person’s filmmaking, which is animation, then stop-motion animation.”

When he met Fidler, an actor, director and puppeteer, he sought his input on working with stop-motion animation dolls.

“That was a really good crossover to working with puppets and video cameras. I came with a cinematographer frame of mind. His was more in the real world, with space and body movement, and so we taught each other those things.”

In 2010, they began to collaborate on what eventually became Sci Fi Double Feature, an “open hand” puppet show where the audience could see what the puppeteers were doing, both onstage and via simultaneous videotaping.

While that first show was in the works, they began devising Tombstone, along with fellow Whitehorse theatre-makers Claire Ness, Geneviève Doyon and Jessica Hickman.

From the outset, they wanted their narrative to cut against the standard western-movie tropes about the chisel-jawed male hero riding in to save the town.

Instead, they devised the tale of Petal, who dreams of having her own acrobatic show, but is stuck running her father’s westernthemed amusement park where all the rides and attractions are run by cowboy robots.

Petal is the park’s only human inhabitant until she hires Hank and his trusty steed, Rusty. But when Petal gets injured and becomes a cyborg, her father, Big Boss Man, forbids her from seeing Hank.

Hank, who loves Petal, creates a robot named Earl to take care of her. Alas, Petal falls for Earl and finds herself in a human/cyborg/ robot love triangle. When the robots decide to revolt, Petal has to choose where her true allegiances lie.

Westerhuis, who co-wrote the script with Fidler, is coy about how the situation turns out, except to suggest there is a “Hegelian dialectic resolution” – a third way.

With two cameras and a cast and crew of about 10 people, Westerhuis says it’s “amazing” to see how much work is being done.

“And the stuff we’re talking about, can be really ridiculous.

Like, what size is the chicken that comes out of the cannon?” he says.

“But it’s a very serious discussion. It’s constant creative problem-solving that pulls on different parts of your brain. Like, how do you be creative and analytical and interpersonal all at the same time? So, it fires all cylinders at the same time.”

An all-ages production, Tombstone: a Cardboard Western will play three shows from Friday, March 30 through Sunday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a

Al Cushing considers his time at the Yukon Arts Centre “a very positive nine years”

We’ve reached out to KIAC in Dawson and the folks in the Junction,” Cushing says.

“Touring has opened up, and I think this year we’ll have our first territorial touring happening, trying to make that arts centre be what it’s supposed to be.”

While he’s giving up his day job at YAC, the New Brunswick native and his Ontario-born wife, artist and activist Linda Leon, have no plans to leave their adopted home.

“We love it here. We don’t have any desire to go anywhere else, so we’ll be staying around.”

The couple met in Calgary in 1978 during the crew preview for the movie, Superman. Cushing jokes that it was a fortune cookie that persuaded them to move to Whitehorse in the first place (see What’s Up Yukon, August 21, 2014).

When he steps into retirement at the end of this month, one aspect of the Yukon Arts Centre’s evolution during his nine years at the helm pleases Cushing the most.

“I think the highlight is that the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) has gotten closer to achieving its mandate than ever before, which is to be an arts centre for the Yukon. It ain’t there yet, but we’re getting there,” he says.

The evidence, he suggests, lies in the extent to which the organization has moved beyond the walls of its 25-year-old hilltop edifice on the Yukon College endowment lands.

“We get out of our walls into the Old Fire Hall. We get out of our walls into Art House Carcross.

Now, after winding up his third three-year contract as chief executive officer – or executive director, or general manager (“I don’t care, they’re the same titles.”) – he has no intention of severing his connection with YAC. He plans to continue assisting the Yukon Arts Foundation on a project that has been on the drawing board for a while: expanding the public gallery and providing more storage space to accommodate the Yukon Permanent Art Collection better.

“We’re also looking at the possible creation of multi-uses spaces that could help the performance community grow by being able to provide rehearsal and performance spaces, and possibly expanding the lobby, so that it can become a revenue-generator.”

positive” nine-year stint. “ O b v i o u s l y, things take longer than you want, but I was prepared for that. Some things move slowly, but they are moving forward,” he says.

“I would like to have gotten the extension on the art gallery done before I left, but there’s all sort of reasons why not. Other than that, we got the new sound system done, and we’ve built up a really positive staff that’s doing exciting things.”

Among those exciting things, Cushing cites a major board and staff retreat three years ago that reaffirmed the centre’s territorywide mandate, as well as a “hugely successful” summit of Yukon creators and arts presenters in the fall of 2014.

From its founding by the territorial government in the early 1990s, Cushing says, the YAC’s role in serving and encouraging the arts in communities beyond the capital is unique among Canada’s provinces and territories.

The key to making it successful, he contends, does not lie with one person, even the one at the top.

“It’s all about people. It’s the people you have in your staff that you empower and who do the work,” he says.

As for words of advice the outgoing CEO would pass on to his successor, the message is simple: “Build the strength of your people, and then respect the community and the work that is already being done in the community.”

There’s a new berry in town that’s worth noticing

I

t struck me a couple days ago that I have gotten out of the habit of baking, and was missing having nibbly bites about for those mid-meal moments that require just a little something.

I briefly mentally bemoaned my lack of muffins, before remembering that this is one of the things that I can actually address in short order.

I turned to the simple cakes section of a non-fussy French baking book (no really, it is) with the equivalent of opening an atlas blind to plan a vacation. Cornmeal

cake with berries was what chance proffered – why not? Not only did it turn out to be a delicious use of the languishing store of cornmeal in the back of the cupboard, but an excellent vehicle for a new addition to my repertoire: the haskap.

Haskap (no “s” for the plant in the plural - I can’t quite wrap my grammatical tongue around that one) are honeysuckles (Lonicera caerulea) that bear oblong dusky blue berries. They are native to the circumpolar north and were initially cultivated in North

America as an ornamental in the 1950s – these varieties had incredibly bitter berries, so its no wonder nobody caught on to the fruit potential. In Japan however, fruit growers have been working with haskap for centuries. As per usual, they’re onto a good thing.

Delving into the origins of the haskap plants on the market today (names like Tundra, Borealis and Aurora might be familiar) led me to learn about the development of the named plants that we buy and grow. In this case, the University of Saskatchewan’s (U of S) Plant

I that can be added to sparkling (or still) water for a refreshing l ike to use my frozen berries to make a simple concentrated juice

drink. Of course a shot of something medicinal could be added – but the teetotaler’s version is lovely on its own.

I bring a small potful of frozen berries to a simmer on the woodstove, with a little water to prevent burning. I sieve out the berries and collect the juice, then return the pot to the stove with another cup of water.

I repeat this up to two more times depending on the strength of colour in the juice, and then save the leftover berry mash to add to my breakfast cereal. I make enough to last a week or two and find it keeps fine in a jar or bottle in the fridge.

■ Sciences Department has been working with haskap material since 1998 under the direction of Dr. Bob Bors. They have obtained cultivated material from Japan and the US and wild material from Canada and Russia and are crossing different lines and measuring the progeny for all sorts of things: fruit quality and size, bush size and shape etc. They look for how well berries hang on once they ripen and how well the plants and berries respond to mechanical harvesting – an important issue for plants that might end up in large orchards. For us, testing for hardiness is even more valuable; those plants that produce the largest, juiciest berries are not necessarily those that can survive the harshest winters, or remain dormant if it warms up mid-season.

New cultivars are coming online every year, and it can feel hard to keep up – I’m only just starting to explore how to use the berries as a group. There is a lot of variation in taste among the different lines, which allows for complex flavour development by varying proportions of each.

– the colour of haskap juice is pH dependent, turning more purplish blue in a basic environment and crimson in acid. I’ve noticed this when I add sparkling water (containing carbonic acid) to a splash of haskap juice for a lovely afternoon refresher, and then put the red-stained glass in the dishwater and see it turn the whole sink blue. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the University of Saskatchewan who have gone in-depth into the chemistry at work (check it out at Fruit.USask.ca).

I am eager to see what someone like Miche Genest will do with this colour-shifting berry, or for that matter any of our brilliant non-culinary artists. In the meantime, I’ll keep experimenting in my random sort of way, and while these in no way replace blueberries and the delight I find in getting out into the mountains for a good picking day, it’s no bad thing to have a berry-laden bush right out the back door!

n 2012 I came up to volunteer at the Yukon Quest Dog Sled Race and fell in love with the land. As I was approaching retirement, I decided that I would find a way to relocate my hobby dog team, consisting of mostly rescued dogs, and myself and four cats to the Yukon.

It was a shock when after 10 years with the same employer I was laid off on two days notice.

So, it was a fast move (before I ran out of money). In June of last year, I arrived with “Yukon or Bust” painted on my tailgate.

In the scramble, my favorite teacup was left behind, still proudly displayed on my kitchen wall. A friend, who’s daughter I had introduced to mushing, had found it in a second hand store and bought it as a gift for me because of the dog team on the cup and saucer. My roommate had bought and altered a special display shelf for it and mushers were offered tea in it when they dropped in.

Some brought food, others hauled water for us and loans were given to see us through rough patches.

Nearly every day I am moved to tears by the beauty of this land and its people. Yesterday a package from my old roommate came in the mail. It was my teacup complete with its shelf. Spring Guests

The Swan Haven Interpretive Centre opens in the first week of April in anticipation of the birds’ arrival

I

f the crocus is the official flower of spring, then the swan must be the official bird of spring in the Yukon. Each year thousands of swans ascend to the Yukon from winter feeding grounds along the coasts of Washington and southern British Columbia.Their annual stop brings them to Marsh Lake, where the birds congregate en masse, like tourists on a layover, feeding and resting up for the remainder of journey.

Their appearance is a sure sign that long-awaited spring is about to unfold.

The mass migration features both trumpeter swans and tundra swans, although the trumpeters are much more numerous, says Scott Cameron of Environment Yukon. Both species are similar in appearance, with white plumage, black bills and eyes and large feet. Trumpeter swans are slightly larger than their tundra cousins, however, weighing in at around 25 pounds, with a wingspan of up to six feet. Males and females of both species appear the same, and

juveniles are a light grey colour instead of white.

Swans are vegetarians and stop in the Southern Lakes region in the Yukon to eat aquatic plants and rest before heading off to their breeding grounds in central Alaska, although a few do breed in the northern Yukon, Cameron says.

The swans usually begin to appear at Marsh Lake around the first week of April, although Cameron notes they arrived early in 2016.

During peak migration, which occurs in the middle of April, there are often 1,300 swans gathered together, although last year the numbers were higher: around 2,000.

“As a whole, we’ve seen populations of trumpeter swans increase across North America over the last decade,” Cameron says of the increased numbers.

The arrival of the swans attracts not just people, but also predators, such as foxes, coyotes and bald eagles, Cameron says.

“Almost anything would scavenge a swan carcass. These birds

Each spring, thousands of swans stop in at Swan Haven on Marsh Lake on their way to their northern breeding grounds are part of the food web,” he notes.

One thing Cameron likes about the swans is the way they take off from the water.

“Being such a big, lumbering heavy bird, it’s interesting to see them take off and get air born.

They are not exactly graceful… it’s a running start on the water and

the sound they make with their feet slapping the water, the air rushing over their feathers as they take off can be very loud. It’s a lot of bird and when you’re close to it it’s very impressive,” he says.

The Swan Haven Interpretive Centre opens with The Celebration of Swans the first week of April, and will feature free programing and events. The swan migration itself is usually finished by the end of April. Swan Haven Environment Yukon’s web page for Swan Haven gives these directions for getting there: Swan Haven is located on the shores of M’Clintock Bay on Marsh Lake. From Whitehorse, take the Alaska Highway south past the Lewes River Bridge to Marsh Lake.

About 40 km south of Whitehorse, you’ll reach North M’Clintock Subdivision, and Swan Haven Road. Turn right down Swan Haven Road and follow it for 2 km until you reach the Swan Haven Interpretation Centre.

Sausage Stuffed Squid with Creamy Polenta T

he rule of thumb when cooking squid is either really fast, or really slow. Most people lean towards fast - fried calamari is on thousands of menus all over the country because you can get a great product really quickly. But the depth of flavour and tender texture you can

achieve when you slowly simmer squid is totally worth the investment of your time.

A version of this dish hits my table every month or so, in fact pork and squid top my list of surf and turf combinations every time. If you’re in a bit of a hurry you can get a great final product by just simmering rings of squid in a sausage tomato sauce and serving it over pasta. But if you’re looking to impress, then give these stuffed squid a try – it’s a great presentation to hit your table. This polenta is made with fine cornmeal, but if you look around you can find a quick cooking polenta that is just as good.

Stuffed Squid METHOD

INGREDIENTS

Remove the casing from the sausage before you stuff the squid

For the squid: Separate the wings and head from the bodies of the squid, then rinse the body under cold water. Remove the sausage from the casing and stuff the squid full with sausage, then seal with a skewer. Repeat with remaining sausage and squid, then pierce each stuffed squid a couple of times with a skewer. This will help them retain their shape while they simmer.

2 large or 4 smaller whole squid, cleaned 4 sausages (chorizo, Italian, etc.)

1 onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped ¼ cup chopped parsley one 28 ounce can of whole tomatoes 2 cups stock (or water, or beer) Salt and pepper, to taste

2. In a large skillet over medium high heat, cook the remaining crumbled sausage until browned.

Add onion, garlic and chopped parsley and cook stirring often for five minutes, or until the onion has softened.

For the polenta: Bring water to a boil over high heat and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Add the cornmeal while whisking constantly to get rid of any lumps. Turn heat to medium and continue to cook whisking constantly until polenta has thickened, about 15 minutes.

Add butter and whisk until fully incorporated. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Well it was a bit a different winter, but spring is here, we at the Gardens star�ed off a little late due to a cool early March, things changed fast with that beautif�l sun and longer days, we are now caught up to where we are ever� year at this time.

The retail giſt area of our garden center has increased in size by 300 percent, and we will be celebrating with a g�and opening of the area, coming soon, watch for details!

Food securit� has become a huge topic and we, being in the nor�h, end of the supply line for fresh produce, should be concer�ed. This is a good time to lear� and g�ow some of your food that you eat, have f�n, good exercise, get g�eat tasting food at a much lower price. W

hen I saw the post on Facebook from local Dawsonite Sarah Lenart, asking for two people to join her and friend Jeremy Herndl on a trip to Tuktoyaktuk from Inuvik via the winter ice road, I was elated.

The ice road follows the Mackenzie River delta channels, and eventually ends up on the Arctic Ocean. Construction of an allweather highway, which has been ongoing since 2013, is expected to be finished by fall of 2017, after which the ice road will be permanently closed. I didn’t want to miss out on an experience that might be gone forever by next year, so I immediately messaged Sarah back - I’m in!

Fellow Dawson resident Derrick Hastings messaged a day later, and our group was complete. We settled on February 20 to 23 for our adventure. Sarah took on the responsibility of organizing everything.

The morning of the 20th was sunny and cold as we all met at the Dawson airport. Excitement was in the air. After a stop in Old Crow, we landed in Inuvik and approached the airport car rental company to book a car. We were told that sadly, there was nothing available except a truck.

“Ice Road Truckers!” we all yelled, and enthusiastically put our names down.

We arrived at the rental company bright and early the next day to pick up our truck. In order to be fair and give each of us a chance to experience driving the ice road, it was decided that we would each take a driving shift of

one hour.

It was an honour to be the first shift, which took us from land onto the Mackenzie River.

We drove slowly, not wanting to rush through the trip. After all, it’s all about the journey, not the destination! Truckers and vehicles passed us, but we didn’t care – we were driving on a river, soon to be the ocean – this was an experience to be savoured!

Being in the driver’s seat also allowed another privilege – choice of music. Folk, alternative, and East Indian techno dance accompanied us as we gazed out the windows and snapped pictures.

Sarah, the expert in all things internet, periodically recorded live podcasts throughout our journey. We ended up with followers from Italy, Germany, and of course, Dawson City, looking through our eyes as we made our way to Tuktoyaktuk, or “Tuk,” as it’s more commonly referred to.

When we arrived at the point where the river became the ocean (Sarah kept track on her map app of where we were), we all got out and jumped up and down. How incredible to be standing on a frozen ocean! The horizon stretched out on either side with no land in sight – it FELT like the ocean.

Selfies were taken, smiles all around, then back in the truck to continue on.

After approximately 187 km, Jeremy was the driver to take us onto land and into the town of Tuk. After finding our bed and breakfast, we set out on foot to explore this small Inuvialuit community.

PHOTOS: Gabriela Sgaga It was cold, and the buildings looked windswept by snow. The locals, by contrast, were warm and friendly. We were invited into people’s homes to look at their beautiful, hand-made crafts, and once word got around, some even came to our bed and breakfast for tea and a chat. And all around us, the horizon stretched forever, a blend of different shades of grey sky and frozen ocean.

The next day, we walked across the bay on foot towards a station of the Distant Early Warning Line, also known as the DEW Line or the Early Warning Line. It was part of a system of radar stations set up in the far northern Arctic region of Canada in the 1950s to detect incoming Soviet bombers during the

Cold War, and provide early warning of any sea-and-land invasion.

A sobering history, but interesting nonetheless.

After some more home visits and local hospitality, we were on the road back to Inuvik, loaded down with gifts and memories.

This was our last night away from home. We sat up until 3 a.m. in our small rented cabin on the outskirts of Inuvik, talking and laughing – four very different people who had come together for an adventure, now bonded with the

shared experience of having driven an ice road that may be gone forever next year, but will always live on in our photos and memories.

Firth sent up his iconic portrayal of Darcy in the film version of Bridget Jones’s Diary, which has a plot loosely based on Pride and Prejudice. He plays Mark Darcy, a standoffish lawyer who starts off as a nemesis for Bridget. “Human rights barrister. Pretty nasty beast, apparently,” her father whispers. Writer Jo Baker follows Pride and Prejudice down another path, centering on the servants in Longbourn, published in 2013 and also available at Whitehorse Public Library. The Bennet family appears, but the Longbourn staff have their own preoccupations, as the world touches them where it doesn’t much intrude on Austen’s characters. But Baker’s perspective allows a more compassionate view of Mrs. Bennet and poor, ridiculous Mr. Collins than Austen does, and lends a tragic dimension to Lydia Bennet’s exploits.

The “big and glossy” figures of Darcy and Bingley are glimpsed briefly, as they tramp their disruptive way through the Longbourn household to wreak romantic havoc on the lives of the gentle Bennet sisters.

Thank You, Grandma

rekking around the vast wilderness behind my grandparents home, I remember my grandma taking me through the wilderness teaching me about traditional medicines. I loved learning what the medicines could be used for, when to use them, their benefits and the importance of respect and dignity for all life around me.

She would discuss survival techniques, shelter building, edible berries, edible plants and how to make it through a cold night if I ever found myself lost in the woods. Owning two trap lines hundreds of kilometres into the wilderness, where there was no cell service, running water or other individuals, it was important to learn these survival methods and how to aid someone else that might be in distress.

My grandmother, the matriarch of our family, was full of knowledge; a Kaska/Tahltan elder, her traditions were important to her. My grandma’s life events and stories were shared only to the carefully listening ear. Although my grandma influenced me in many ways, the most profound impact she had on my life was through her activism, for not only indigenous people but everyone.

Just over two years ago, I found myself stagnant in a job within the city limits of Halifax, Nova Scotia. I had uprooted my life in the Yukon over a decade before to pursue my degree. I left behind the life I knew in the Yukon, the guidance of my grandmother and the support of my family in search for something more.

I completed my schooling, which was something my grandmother had encouraged. One of the things she advocated for most strongly was accessible education for those who lived in the Yukon. I

was fortunate that my hockey career led me to university on the East Coast. It was early February 2015, when I packed my bags to head back to the Yukon, having just lost my grandfather not a month earlier, I was on my way to visit my ailing grandmother in the hospital.

I had called my family nightly to check in on her, she was often too weak to speak. As I put my bags in the taxi heading towards the airport I received a phone call from my uncle letting me know my grandmother had passed away moments earlier.

I attended my grandmother’s funeral a week later and was able to participate in the traditional funeral she had requested.

The funeral sparked my interest in learning more about my culture and family history. A time of solace, I spent the next year

planning my return to the Yukon, when an unexpected opportunity at a local women’s organization in Watson Lake presented itself.

Women’s rights and social activism was not always a topic around the dinner table. It was something I did not realize was entrenched in my values at a young age.

I attended some of my first meetings in the community with my grandmother, listening to her advocate for cultural healing, preserving tradition, women’s rights and working together to keep the community from divide.

I love flipping through photographs of my grandmother at workshops, or at rallies: she was always spearheading a campaign.

I admire that she was never afraid to speak her mind and share her values and love for all individuals

regardless of race, gender or sexuality.

My mother – another amazing role model – followed closely in her mother’s footsteps. She received an award for bridging the gap between First Nations people and the RCMP in 2012. My mother, like her own mother, continues to be a strong voice in the community and big influence in my activism.

I feel fortunate that I was raised with Kaska/Tahltan values. To me, my grandma was just “my grandma,” but as an adult I feel so lucky that she ignited within me so many of the values I so strongly believe in.

While never labeled or necessarily articulated, my grandmother’s life and legacy planted the roots of social justice and social activism within me. I have the

matriarchs of my family to thank for my ever-developing views and support in a line of work that is not glorious, and often thankless, but that I am thankful for.

Crystal Stewart works as a Women’s Advocate with the Liard Aboriginal Women’s Society in Watson Lake. She is of Kaska and Tahltan decent and is a member of the Liard First Nations Band. Born in the Yukon, she has lived within the territory on and off for a combined 15 years. Crystal returned to the Yukon just over a year ago to be closer to her family and to be actively involved in the the community that her grandmother loved so much.

Over the years, I have been able to see Paint Mountain (see photo #1) – which is around 100 km west from my place – many times.

However, on a few special occa-

sions I have I seen it turning into an amazing mirage that looks like a castle: a Fata Morgana.

Named after Morgan le Fay, a sorceress in the times of King Arthur, a Fata Morgana is what’s called a superior mirage, meaning that whatever looms at the horizon is seen above it’s actual position.

A subsun and lower sun pillar that I saw from a hill behind our house that we call “Don’s Descent.”

Such mirages, being superior, appear to show Paint Mountain elevated above its normal position. In a Fata Morgana this mirage comes in the form of great pillars and plateaus, and it seems that I see these mirages only in the winter.

Recently, when travelling east from Mendenhall to Whitehorse, I saw what looks like a brand cont’d on page 27...

This photo is of the same view, and you can see that on clear days there is no such mountain

spanking new mountain near Stony Creek – see photo #2. It was a mirage – another Fata Morgana. This mirage of a new mountain range appears to be beyond Whitehorse, again around 100 km from where I was standing.

In photo #3, you can see that on clear days there is no such mountain. Only the ridge in front of it is visible, and one snow covered peak peeking out from behind this ridge, but no mountain range as one can see in the Fata Morgana.

I read that superior mirages are more likely to occur in polar regions. In my research I couldn’t find anything on the typical dis-

tance between the viewer and the mirage, but I can tell you I have never seen a mirage towards the south or north from here. I am wedged in, in that direction, with the mountains to the north being five to 10 km away, and the ones towards the south being 15 to 20 km distant.

From here on the Alaska Highway, I only have long views, over 100 km unobstructed, along the valley to the east or west.

What I did happen to see towards the south one day (photos #4 and #5) were atmospheric optics of another kind.

#4) I saw a subsun. When you travel by airplane, you might have seen this phenomenon more often.

This particular subsun is part of a lower sun pillar. Sun pillars can also frequently be seen from an airplane. The lower sun pillar can show itself when you are looking down a slope at sunset or sunrise and, as was the case here, I was looking down into a valley with ice fog.

You don’t have to be in the mountains or the air to see an incredible optical phenomenon in the sky. The first time I saw a circumzenithal arc, I was close to town. I looked up from out of the trees and saw an upside down rainbow – which is another name for a circumzenithal arc. I later learned that this was probably part of a 46-degree halo.

Now, knowing more, I search the entire sky after seeing something extraordinary, such as sundogs, there is often a lot more to it. When I see atmospheric phenomena in the sky in town, the fun thing is that soon everybody is gazing upwards while starting to talk to each other. The best comment I have heard was, “it’s the Alaskans doing experiments.” For all I know, this could be true. Or it could even be aliens.

Whatever the explanation for these atmospheric optics, I can at least name them now.

Photo #5 was taken looking from the Alaska Highway towards Kusawa Lake. On the left side of the photo is Mount Vanier (the tent with cloud on top) and Mount Coudert (the lower mountain past Vanier); Kusawa Ridge is on the right side of the photo.

The circle around the sun, in which these two sundogs appear, is a 22-degree halo. Also, when you look closely, you can see a faint line connecting the sundogs with the sun. This line, which extends to the east, is part of the parhelic circle.

Above the sun you see a dish on top of the 22-degree halo, which is an upper tangent arc. Faintly vis-

ible at the very top of the photo, you can see the upside down rainbow – the circumzenithal arc.

There are quite a few more of these sky phenomena and if, unlike myself, you are a nighthawk, you might know more about the wonders found in the night sky.

hen Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin, 29, defeated American Patrick Cantlay on the final hole of the Valspar Championship in Florida on March 12 to win the first PGA Tour title of his career, his life changed forever when the winning putt fell into the cup.

All of a sudden instead of going on his honeymoon to Tahiti the last weekend in March, he and fiancée Jessica Kippenberger found themselves wondering if Augusta National has a Honeymoon Cabin, because they are going to the 2017 Masters in Augusta, Georgia on April 6-9.

Baseball’s Only Perfect Season

A

s a retired sportswriter who bleeds baseball Red and could steal second base before I was able to walk to first, I was recently deep into the internet researching the history and origins of the game when I stumbled on a fact that had somehow escaped my attention as a young writer: “The Perfect Season.”

Now, baseball is no stranger to perfection with perfect games, perfect plays, perfect weather and perfect serendipity such as the Chicago Cubs winning their first World Series since 1908 to produce the perfect ending to the 2016 season.

But a “Perfect Season?” I, personally, had never heard of such a thing, other than Don Shula’s 1972 Miami Dolphins, and almost feel embarrassed to admit it. Yet here are the undisputed facts of the matter: Cincinnati Red Stockings Year W L T 1867 17 1 0 1868 36 7 0 1869* 65 0 0 1870* 67 6 1 *Pro And here are the names of the 10 men who did it, the first professional baseball players in history and the only ones to complete a full season without a loss: Asa Brainard, Pitcher Doug Allison, Catcher Charlie Gould, First Base Charlie Sweasy, Second Base Fred Waterman, Third Base George Wright, Shortstop Andy Leonard, Left Field Harry Wright, Centre Field/ Manager Cal McVey, Right Field

Dick Hurley, Substitute The stars of the team were the Wright brothers – and not Wilbur and Orville. Harry was the manager who also played centre field and his brother, George, was the best hitter and fielder.

Only one player, first baseman Charlie Gould, was actually from Cincinnati. The others were from the east, most from the corridor between Washington, DC and Troy, NY, which was considered the hotbed of baseball in those days.

They were enticed to the banks of the distant Ohio River, far across the Allegheny Mountains, by the lure of money and the opportunity to be paid to play the game they all loved and had always played for nothing.

Of course, they were an AllStar team of sorts, playing against amateurs – so if any team was ever going to go undefeated it would be them. But it still sounds unfathomable to me to win 81 games in a row and most of them by lopsided scores. If there had been a World Series in 1869, nobody would have played them.

But reality set in after the 1870 season and the team went broke, folded and broke up. The Wrights and two others, Gould and McVey, went to Boston as pros and started the Boston Red Stockings and the others, Brainard, Allison, Sweasy, Waterman and Leonard to DC and the Washington Olympics for the new all professional league called the National Association.

In 1872, Leonard jumped to Boston to rejoin the Wrights, McVey and Gould for the first of four consecutive NA titles making the Boston Red Stockings the first powerhouse in pro baseball. They

But it was a brief honeymoon.

On Oct. 8, 1880 Cincinnati was expelled from the NL, due in part to its refusal to stop renting out their ballpark on Sundays and to cease selling beer during games. They didn’t rejoin the league again until 1888.

The Tripod Stands to Mark the River’s Breakup

G

iven the odd behavior of the Yukon River this year, it’s not at all certain just how and when spring breakup will occur, but however it happens, the ladies of the IODE have it covered.

What were some very wide open leads in the river prevented the formation of the usual ice bridge across at the ferry landing site this winter. Indeed, that passage has only become accessible to walkers, dog teams, snowmobiles and ATVs over the last fortnight at this writing (March 19) and those crossing from West Dawson and Sunnydale have had to rely on a route upstream that works out to be over 6 km long.

There was some concern about how this might affect the contest, but the river had finally filled in and the Yukon Order of Pioneers have placed the usual tripod on the ice.

It’s the movement of the tripod, attached by a cable to a clock at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, that establishes the precise time of breakup and determines who wins the annual ice pool.

By that time, people holding tickets will have been walking the dyke trail at all hours of the day and night (which is pretty light by then) watching the river for signs of the approaching summer. Someone will be there to see the river ice move. That person will notify

the fire hall, and some member of the department will sound the siren to let the community know what is happening.

At one time that siren might have been a flood alert warning, but the last of those was in 1979, and the dyke that was built in 1987 has been doing its job well since then.

No matter what time of day the siren sounds, you can count on the dyke to quickly fill up with spectators. If school is in session, classes will take time to go see the sight.

A week to 10 days later, the George Black Ferry will be launched and normal summer travel will begin.

Break-up contests have been going on in Dawson since 1896. Records indicate that used to be several of them, but they were consolidated at some point and run by a committee. The IODE assumed that role during World War II. At that time they reserved one quarter of the proceeds to buy items for soldiers serving overseas. Now they retain half of the profit and use the money to do charitable works and fund student awards.

Tickets have gone on sale for this year already, and will be available in Dawson, Stewart Crossing, Braeburn Lodge and Whitehorse until April 15. This is sooner than used to be the custom, but the river set a new early breakup re-

cord of April 23 in 2016, and if the IODE had not changed its day then, the ice would have gone out while tickets were still being sold.

Interestingly, the previous early record of April 28 was set in 1940, the year that the IODE took over what was sometimes called the Ice Derby from the committee that had been handling it up to that year.

In recent years, breakup has been occurring between April 29 and May 12, with a solid cluster of dates between May 1 and 4 and

one outlier on May 15 in 2013. The latest date on record in May 28, in 1964, but the statistical trend line shows a strong tendency for earlier rather than later over the last 20 years.
