his photo was taken high up in the Dezdeash Mountain Range close to my family’s hunting camp, Squirrel Creek. Our dog Tasha was with us on a moose hunting trip and right prior to this photo she caught and killed a ptarmigan. Tash loves going on adventures with the horses, when we are on the trail she does her perimeter checks and once that is done she usually picks a spot to wait for everyone and every horse to go past her (she hates it when the group isn’t together). If it’s a particularly long trail ride or overnight trip she hops on my horse Shooter with me to take a little break. Tasha is turning 5 on February 19th and I rescued her from Mayo, Yukon. Along with trail riding with the horses she LOVES to chase gophers, rabbits, and willow grouse and in the winter time she loves to pull a small sleigh containing oats to feed the horses.

What’s Up Yukon is pleased to partner with the Yukon Transportation Museum’s Dog Culture Display, “Yukon’s Best Friend: Doggedness in Love and Labour”. he International Tabletop Day celebrates board gaming around the world and an event is being hosted in Whitehorse this year by the Yukon Comic Culture Society (YCCS) on Saturday, April 30. The free event takes place at the Whitehorse Public Library from noon to 5 p.m. The YCCS is supplying board games for the event while door prizes will be drawn throughout the day. Wil Wheaton, best known for his role as Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: the Next Generation, is promoting the International Tabletop Day. He’s a board game lover and he hosts a successful show called TableTop that is broadcast on the YouTube channel Geek & Sundry. On Tabletop, Wil Wheaton and a rotating cast of famous geeks and friends play board games, illustrating how to play them. Tabletop episodes have garnered over 30 million views and is considered a significant force in the board gaming industry with games featured on the show often selling out immediately. In an interview for the magazine Gamesradar, Wheaton explained what Tabletop Day is about: “The idea is for gamers to gather at homes, libraries, community centres, friendly local game shops, dorm rooms, beaches and other fun places to play games together. We built a website that makes it easy for gamers to plan, join, and coordinate events, at TableTopDay.com. It’s a celebra-

Designer board games have been growing in popularity over the last 20 years, with significant growth seen in the last five. Driven by the ability of the Internet to connect gamers more easily and the access to funding that Kickstarter provides new publishers, designer board gaming has exploded with thousands of new games introduced per year. and Takenoko have slowly crept onto the shelves of mass market stores like Chapters and Wal-Mart. Board game designs now range in format from super-fast and easy to learn 10 minute games to elegantly designed games that play in an hour or two to epic, 12-hour plus board games where players do battle to rule the galaxy, controlling space forces and the economy of their empire. The Yukon Comic Culture Society has been hosting monthly free board gaming sessions throughout the city as part of their community outreach initiative. During each event, the YCCS provides their library of over 60 board games for play with volunteers available to teach new players these games. With an eye to keeping the event family friendly, the YCCS has purchased a wide variety of games for all ages and play-styles, from dexterity based games to cooperative board games for the ultra-competitive.

The Yukon Comic Culture Society is the organisation that scheduled the Star Wars Burlesque event in 2015 and who organise Yukomicon, the Yukon’s only comic and geek convention. The next Yukomicon is scheduled for August 2017. Tabletop Day is an international event that, in 2015, included over 3,000 registered events worldwide and whose social media campaign generated over 75 million impressions, with #TableTopDay trending globally for 12 hours on Twitter and Facebook. The free International Tabletop Day board game event takes place at the Whitehorse Public Library on Saturday, April 30 from noon to 5 p.m. For more information check out the Yukon Comic Culture Society Facebook page. hen a group of Dawsonites dressed up in Gold Rush garb to meet a Canadian Pacific Airlines riverboat in 1962, they had no idea that this simple one-off publicity stunt would put down roots and that the fledgling Klondike Tourist Bureau would evolve into the Klondike Visitors Association (KVA) about 10 years later. Today, the not for profit KVA has about $3 million in annual operating revenues, pays out $1.34 million in wages and benefits to the community, employing nearly 80 seasonal workers and some part timers throughout the year. It provides the territorial government with a quarter of the revenue from its slot machine operations ($254,022 this year). The KVA spends money marketing Dawson City as a tourism destination, an effort that benefits the entire Yukon. It finances its operations primarily with revenues from Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall. As attractions, it owns and operates the Jack London Museum and Interpretive Centre, the Free Claim #6 on Bonanza Creek, where visitors can experience gold panning first hand. The KVA also assists the Writers Trust of Canada in the operations of the Berton House Writers’ Retreat, which

sees four writers each year spend three months living in the Klondike. Community Events Casino weekends provide a lot of cash to local not-for-profits, and there are outright donations, in kind or in cash, to a number of other organizations. The KVA plans and operates many events during the year, taking the lead on the recently completed Spring carnival, called Thaw di Gras, just a few weeks after the snowmobile driven Trek Over the Top, which brings visitors from Alaska in March. It assists in the organization of the annual Commissioner’s Ball, works with the City of Dawson in promoting Canada Day events, organizes the annual Yukon Gold Panning Championships, helps the Tourism Association of the Yukon with its Yukon Culinary Festival, holds the annual Great Klondike International Outhouse Race, the Authors on 8th Literary Walking Tour and Writing Contest and participates in Discovery Days events in mid-August. The KVA regularly partners with other organizations to carry out projects. The Klondike Sun publishes all the entries in the writing contest. CFYT-fm uses Gerties to hold its annual talent night. The Dawson City Music Festival’s popular lip sync event is held in Ger-

ties. When the Nutcracker is performed here at Christmas time, the KVA makes Gerties available for the show. In addition, KVA members play a role on various territorial and local committees, such as the Tourism Industry Association of Yukon, the Tourism Marketing Committee, the Klondike Development Organization and the Tr’ondëk/ Klondike UNESCO Designation Advisory Group. At the end of each summer season, the KVA organizes and holds a Klondike Tourism Round-up meeting in which the members of the business and not-for-profit organizations meet to share their impressions of the season just ended and suggest how things might be improved for future years. If all this were not enough, the staff is busy planning a special Jack London Festival for this June to coincide with the 100th anniversary of his death in November, 1916, at the age of 40. More on that in a later column. Dan Davidson retired from 32 years of teaching in rural Yukon schools, but continues writing about life in Dawson City. Laughter Yoga: Heal Yourself Laughing by Ivan Skofenko

I

t is well-known that laughter is the best medicine. However, do we laugh enough in a normal life to get any benefit? Scientists say to get benefits from laughing one has to laugh 10 minutes continuously. Usually, life rarely provides us with such an opportunity. Also, one may be depressed. What to do then? Medical professionals did not take laughter seriously until its miraculous effect was accidentally revealed. In the middle of the 1970’s, Norman Cousins, editor of the Saturday Review, was diagnosed with a painful, life-threatening disease affecting the spine and joints. After doctors gave him little chance of recovery, he developed his own plan of treatment and finally was cured. His miraculous medicine was watching comedies and laughing. In those days, he documented many interesting findings of the effects of laughing which later

were proved by researchers. Scientists found that active and continuous laughter boosts the immune system, stimulates the heart and lungs, reduces stress and even helps with social bonds and relationships. However, the humour-based therapy had its limitation when put into practice. In 1995, Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from India, was inspired by reports about the effects of laughter therapy to encourage his patients to gather together in a park and laugh every day. To make themselves laugh they used jokes and funny stories.

of days, the number of people willing to laugh was 50. Then Dr. Kataria came to understand there were some limitations of this humour-based approach. For example, the number of jokes and PHOTO: Denis Yakushevich stories were limited, some of these were not funny for Laughter Exercise “Electric everyone, and in one instance, a Shock,” during a session training participant felt insulted by a joke and left the session. ing and reading the entire night. While studying one piece of research he got important insight: we do not need humour to laugh. The research said that the human body can not differentiate between real and artificial laughter and therefore even simulated laughing gives the same benefits. He then explained his new idea to participants in the morning. They started their session with simulated laughter and then Dr. Kataria made one more discovery: in a few minutes, the fake laughter turned to real laughter. It was contagious laughing for no reason in a setting where every participant felt comfortable and secure. With time, Dr. Kataria developed an entire system helping people to laugh for no reason.

Skills from the Past

Alaskan organizations seeking volunteers to help restore historic building – brick by brick by Paul Rath

V

Richard’s Tire Tips

When was the last time YOU ROTATED YOUR TIRES?

Studies have shown that by performing a regular rotation every 8 - 10,000kms the life of your tires is significantly increased, in most cases by up to 25%. Other factors such as driving style, application and tire pressure will also affect tread life. Failure to regularly perform rotations has proven to cause several different abnormal wear patterns such as diagonal, accelerated and uneven wear. The common rule for rotations is to move the drive axle tires straight forward or back depending on the vehicle and the free rolling axle should be crossed.

nquiring (and even inquiring) minds want to know: what the heck is a hack, anyway? In response to numerous queries on that very subject (none, actually), I’ve been hacking my way through the undergrowth of lexicography trying to decode a term the internet seems to assume all of us understand intuitively. Surprisingly, the dots between traditional and modern usages occasionally connect in some interesting ways. Anyone who has ever wielded an axe, a machete, or a steak knife knows what it’s like to hack away at something such as a tree, a shrub, or a particularly stubborn piece of beef. It’s an easy leap from there to how a stealthy hacker hacks into someone else’s computer system. Resistance, it seems, is often futile. Those of us who rank amongst the rankest of amateur participants in the ancient and honourable pastime of golf are accustomed to hacking around the back nine with equal futility. The medically-inclined (including those with a hypochondriac’s flair for melodrama) know

how it feels to awaken at 2 a.m. to hack up our boots with a dry, hacking cough. If we’ve done a bit in jail, we refer to guards as hacks (otherwise known as “bulls,” “screws,” or other terms of endearment). After enough time under lock and key - or locked into a deadend job - we may well complain we just can’t hack it any more. Anyone who has served in the navy may have done the occasional stretch under hack (confined to quarters) for some real or imagined indiscretion. In equestrian circles, a hack can be a light, gentle saddle horse. Extend that image slightly and a hack becomes a horse put out for public hire, transporting customers in a conveyance called a hackney. These days, you’ll probably hire a horseless carriage called a taxi, still colloquially known as a hack in places like New York City. How one gets from such a vehicle to the word hackneyed to denote a trite or clichéd turn of phrase remains shrouded in mystery. On the theory that it takes one to know one, however, I readily admit that hack writers - available for hire, with no guarantee

of quality - often resort to hackneyed phrases to fill the aching void (don’t all voids ache?) in our paid-by-the-inch masterworks. Which leads indirectly to the modern usage of the word hack, as in “37 Life Hacks You Need to Know” or “16 Cooking Hacks to Re-use Banana Skins.” Theoretically, it refers to a strategy or technique that lets you do things more efficiently: an updated equivalent of “Heloise’s Top Household Hints for Cleaning with Vinegar.” Hack your way through any one of those lists, though, and chances are you’ll find nothing but a useless collection of factoids couched in hackneyed phrases, whose real purpose is to let advertisers hack into your social media profile to sell you something you neither want nor need. Personally, I can’t hack it anymore. I’d rather hack up a hairball than hack my way through reams of deceptive clickbait looking for ways to make life better. Hmmm. I wonder what “meme” means. Ken Bolton is a writer-forhire who lives southeast of Whitehorse.

Enumerators have begun visiting homes across Yukon to collect the names of all eligible electors.

Les recenseurs ont commencé à visiter les habitations du Yukon en vue d’établir la liste des électeurs admissibles.

To be eligible, you must be: • a Canadian citizen, • at least 18 years old and, • a resident in Yukon for the past 12 months.

Pour pouvoir voter, vous devez : • avoir la citoyenneté canadienne; • avoir au moins 18 ans; • avoir résidé au Yukon au cours des 12 derniers mois.

Enumerators will be working in your community to include every eligible elector on the List of Electors. Adding your name to the list of eligible voters will make voting quicker and easier when the election of Members of the Legislative Assembly takes place later this year.

You will be asked for your full name and address, which will appear on the List of Electors. You will also be asked for your birth date and gender, which will not appear on the List. That information will be used by Elections Yukon to update the List in the future, with your consent. It may be shared with Elections Canada to help update federal Lists of Electors, too. Please share the requested information when your neighbourhood enumerators visit — and please contain your dogs to provide them with a safe working environment.

Thank you — in advance — for your cooperation.

Match Making

Music, wine and food team up to launch jazz singer Fawn Fritzen’s second album on April 30 at the Old Fire Hall by Ken Bolton

hen Fawn Fritzen’s new CD, Pairings, debuts at the Old Fire Hall on Saturday, it won’t be your typical Whitehorse album launch. For one thing, many of those in attendance already have a connection to the project as contributors to Fritzen’s effort to underwrite the album’s cost by using social media to appeal for financial support. “Involving people in a crowdfunding campaign, and showing where all the expenses are, is engaging in multiple ways,” the Whitehorse singer says. “It’s really powerful, not just because it helps me to actually be able to create the recording, but it lets people be a part of it and see why it’s valuable beyond the artistic, creative part of it.” By raising nearly $14,000 of her initial $16,000 goal through crowdfunding, Fritzen was able to complete the 12-track project that involved two Whitehorse studios and one in Toronto, and had been in the works for nearly three years. Her 2013 inaugural album, Bedroom Voice, had cost nearly $18,000 to produce. Apart from a $5,000 matching grant from the Yukon Film and Sound Commission, much of it had come from her own pocket. Another factor that will set the upcoming launch apart is the way the CD’s theme of “pairings” is reflected in the evening’s festivities themselves. Local wine aficionado Peter Turner has been recruited to select distinct wines that reflect five of the album’s songs, which attendees who purchase the $50 wine ticket can sample as they listen to Fritzen and her musical collaborators. “I’m just excited to see what he comes up with. Like, what’s the story of this wine, and what’s the story of this song? And finding ways of matching them up that way,” Fritzen says. “In order to

to kind of start out the evening, and then Peter will talk about the first wine and that will be served. Once the wine is poured and he is done talking, people can sip the wine and enjoy it and the song together.” In addition, Mike Boudreau of Bella Fine Dining will be offering hors d’oeuvres designed to match the wine selections. “Logistically, this is quite a

Whitehorse singer Fawn Fritzen during a 10-week stint in Toronto last fall. Her new jazz CD comes out this week. we don’t want to have people shuffling, getting up to get their wine and going back. That creates too much chaos.” The idea of pairing wine and song originated with Fritzen’s

thought everybody felt it needed to be paired with wine. Red wine, usually.” That concept led directly to Fritzen’s decision to compile an album of duos with a variety of different musicians and call it Pairings. As with her first CD, it includes four original tunes, with lyrics in three of the four languages she speaks (English, French and German - there is nothing in

her mother tongue of Mandarin). One of those songs, “Make It a Double,” was inspired by Calgary singer Tim Tamashiro’s observation that jazz music is either “thinky or drinky.” Another duet on the album is with Toronto vocalist Steve Amirault that will doubtless remind listeners of the Frank Sinatra classic, “One for My Baby.” The album also contains distinctive treatments of some jazz chestnuts, including the 1925 show tune, “Tea for Two,” which pairs Fritzen’s voice with piano work by Whitehorse musician Daniel Janke that “gives a kind of weird, dissonant edginess, but it’s still really sweet.” Besides collaborating on several of the tunes as both a performer and engineer, Janke also mixed the album. The album also offers a haunting, voice-and-drums rendering of Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” featuring Calgary percussionist Karl Schwonik and a version of Irving Berlin’s “Always,” arranged by David Restivo for solo voice and alto, tenor and baritone sax. Fritzen also teams up with the saxophone trio on a lesser-known Guess Who number, “Straighten Out,” and with Toronto’s George Koller on two of her own numbers, “Do Do Do” and “Just a Little Dance.” Fritzen’s partner on her original, “La tête dans la lune” and Cleo Laine’s “Lies of Handsome Men,” is award-winning guitarist Reg Schwager. Pairings will be released at the Old Fire Hall on Saturday, April 30 with two concerts, at 6 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Tickets are available at Dean’s Strings. Following the launch, Fritzen leaves for a five-stop tour in southern Ontario and Québec. Ken Bolton is a freelance writer who lives southeast of Whitehorse.

Capture the Green of Spring This recipe for pickled asparagus is like canning the happiness of sunshine and warmer weather

S

pring is in the air! You can taste it… it’s cool, crisp, and vinegary! Oh wait, those are the pickled asparagus – which, in my opinion, bring as much happiness as the onset of sunshine, warmer weather, and longer days. Is it possible to be unhappy while eating pickles? I think not. Although the prospect of making pickles might sound intimidating if you’ve never made them before, vinegar pickles are easy to make and delicious. These pickled asparagus don’t require any different or fancy equipment to make, just your basic canning supplies: Two pots, one large enough to hold all your jars and keep them covered with boiling water, and one saucepan to boil your vinegar solution in. A canning rack for the large pot to keep the jars off the bottom. Alternatively, you can set some extra screw bands on the bottom of the pot. This just keeps water circulating around the jars & keeps them from breaking. Tongs that are sturdy enough for lifting jars in and out of the water bath, preferably with rubber grips on them for extra support. A ladle for pouring your brine into the jars. And of course, you will need clean, glass Mason jars with twopiece, self-sealing lids (the flat lids with the screw on bands). Katherine Bunce is a writer, reader, foodie, and Capricorn currently residing in Whitehorse.

Can asparagus for a taste of summer all winter long PHOTO: Katherine Bunce

Pickled Asparagus Makes three 500 ml jars INGREDIENTS: 2½ - 3 pounds of asparagus (about 1 big bunch. Also, the thicker the asparagus, the more crunchy the pickle!) 6 garlic cloves, peeled 3 shallots, peeled and halved 2 cups distilled white vinegar 2 cups water 2 Tbsp pickling or fine sea salt Your choice of seasoning (see list below) METHOD: • Trim the woody ends from the asparagus, and then cut into 4 inch lengths. Into each of the three jars, snugly pack 2 garlic cloves, 2 shallot halves, and the asparagus, plus one of the seasoning combinations from in the list below. • Bring vinegar, water, and pickling salt to a boil, stirring to dissolve salt. Pour the hot vinegar mixture into your jars, leaving ½ inch of space from the rim. Use a wooden or plastic utensil (I find a chopstick works great) to poke inside each jar a few times to get rid of air bubbles. Wipe any liquid from rims of jars before placing the lids on. Fully submerge in boiling water for 10 minutes. Once jars have been removed from boiling water and cooled down, store them in a cool, dry place. For best flavours, don’t open for at least four weeks (this is truly the hardest part of the whole recipe). SEASONING COMBINATIONS (measurements per jar): • Dilly Asparagus: 1½ tsp dill seeds, and 3 sprigs of fresh dill • Lemon Tarragon Asparagus: 3-4 sprigs of fresh tarragon, and 3-5 large strips of lemon zest • Lemon Pepper Asparagus: 3-5 large strips of lemon zest, and ½ tsp black peppercorns • Spicy Asparagus: 1 red Thai chili or 1 tsp dried chili flakes • Fennel Asparagus: 1½ tsp fennel seeds

Gearing Up for Yukomicon 2017

Yukon Comic Culture Society presents a stage play of the comic series Kill Shakespeare June 2-4 at the Guild Hall by Angela Szymczuk

A

comic-con is an annual event where sci-fi lovers congregate to pay homage to super heroes/villains/authors/actors/producers who help bring this genre to life on the big screen/small screen and comic pages. Cities in North America and around the world host comic-cons, with San Diego being the most popular on this continent. There is typically something for every comic book fan, fantasy film lover, graphic novel enthusiast and the die hard science fiction peeps. For the past two years, the Yukon Comic Culture Society (YCCS) has been proud to present Yukomicon, with impressive turnouts from special guests – such as film and television actors and comic book illustrators – and attendees. Sci-fi and cosplay fans will have to wait another year, however, for the next Yukomicon. It has been postponed until August 2017. Paul Scholz, who is president of the YCCS, says cost is an issue this year and a large part of the problem is the high exchange rate of

the American dollar. “Sometimes it can be very costly to bring certain entertainers in. For the rest of 2016, our goal is to focus on fundraising,” Scholz says. “It is really important that we plan a quality convention.” The entertainment world can be very costly indeed, with actors charging thousands of dollars for an appearance. “We do get generous support from our sponsors, but rather than bring in some actors from older TV series, we would like to try and bring up actors from more recent shows – which can cost quite a bit more,” Scholz says. One of the ways the YCCS plan to fundraise, is by putting on a theatrical production called Kill Shakespeare, based on the 12 series comic of the same name written by Conor McCreery – who was a guest at the Yukomicon last year. “We decided to present (Kill Shakespeare) in the style of a radio play, but instead of being performed over the radio, it will take place on a stage at The Guild Hall in Whitehorse,” Scholz says. Kill Shakespeare is essentially

what the popular Shakespearean characters would be like if they each turned into a badass. The play is set to take place June 2-4. There will be other fundraising events taking place throughout the year, as well. And as usual, the YCCS drop in board game will continue to take place every month. “We have over 70 boardgames, so everyone is welcome to come by, plus it’s free,” says Scholz. Alongside the regular monthly games, there will be a special board game drop-in on Saturday, April 30 at noon at the Whitehorse Public Library to coincide with International Tabletop Day. For the comic-con fans, no need to despair. The YCCS is working hard to raise enough funds to bring Yukomicon back for 2017 – and make it the best one yet. For more information go to www.Yukomicon.com. Angela Szymczuk is a Whitehorse-based writer. Please send comments about her articles to editor@whatsupyukon.com.

Art Nights Alaska in

The First Friday art show openings take place every month in Haines, Alaska by Paul Rath

H

aines is said to have more artists per capita than any town in Southeast Alaska. On Friday April 1st, the creative spirit of Haines was clearly demonstrated as artists, artisans, craftsmen and members of the public gathered for the unveiling of an exhibit compiled by renowned scrimshaw artist Heidi Robichaud. The exhibit, which is sponsored by the Alaska Art Confluence, consists of four panels of photographs of local wood products highlighting logging, milling, manufacturing and finished goods, as well as examples of wood crafts and information about the importance of various tree species in the area. All those who attended the unveiling at the Art on Main Street office were united in their celebration of the importance of wood to the community of Haines. Craftsmen included Scott Carey, a timber framer who uses locally sourced sitka spruce in his construction, which focuses on mortise and tenon techniques. Sitka spruce is ideal for construction because it doesn’t need a lot of drying time and is a strong and durable wood. The resulting framing is beautiful. Next door to the exhibit, in Stepping Stones Studios, local artist Katie Craney unveiled her new pieces series of paintings called “Melt,” which draw attention to global warming. “Alaska is warming,” Craney says, as she talks about her art with quiet intensity. Craney has been experimenting with a variety of materials in her many layered works, including ink, gauze, tissue paper and metal. Aluminium flakes, similar to gold leaf, which are reflective, are added to the paintings. Craney’s message about global warming is, “We are all in it together, and we need to come together to figure it out.” Craney’s hope is that the viewer will see that they are part of the problem or part of the solution. Local cabinet maker John Carlson was also in attendance. He explained that he uses locally grown birch in the construction of the cabinets he builds. He starts with the raw logs, has them cut, then dries them for two years before hand crafting them into cabinets. Artisan Sean Bryant, whose beautiful bowl which he fashioned from birch, was also featured in the exhibit. Bryant described the wood as spalted birch, and

The Yukon and the Great War

Part 4

Mrs. Black Goes to War

This Yukon hero and others will be commemorated at The North and World War I conference at the High Country Inn May 9 to 12 by The Yukon Historical and Museums Association

D

uring the Great War of 1914-1918, nearly a thousand Yukoners enlisted for service in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, or fought for Britain, France and other Allied countries. Of these only a small handful were women. One woman who did not formally enlist to serve in the armed forces, but played an extremely important role in the Yukon’s war effort, was Martha Black. Mrs. Black, at the time, was the Yukon’s First Lady, that is, the wife of the most senior official in the territory, the Commissioner, George Black. She was pivotal in establishing the Imperial Order, Daughters of the Empire (IODE) in March of 1913. When war was declared August 4, 1914, the IODE immediately went into high gear to raise money for various patriotic funds. Within a short time, several more chapters of the IODE were established, including one named after Mrs. Black. For the next two years, there wasn’t a fund raising event

s

in Dawson City that she didn’t support. When Commissioner Black raised a company of volunteers to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Mrs. Black accompanied them to Victoria, then overseas to England, acting as an unofficial den-mother. She was an unstoppable force who overcame the objections of the most senior officials and sailed with her husband and son Lyman aboard a troopship carrying 1,500 men. In England, she volunteered in the Prisoners of War Department, the Red Cross and the YMCA. She administered the Yukon Comfort Fund and visited the Yukon sick and wounded, who had been returned from the battlefields to recuperate. Even her husband George was wounded during the Battle of Amiens in August of 1918. She visited the men of the Yukon Infantry Company who were stationed in southern England. They allowed her to fire one of the machine guns during one visit and she achieved a high score for

The Yukon Historical & Museums Association is coordinating a series of initiatives to commemorate the First World War and explore its impact on the North. The events include a workshop on May 9, the North and First World War Conference on May 9-12 and a Dawson Study Tour on May 13-15.

accuracy. On Christmas Day, 1917, she visited George and his men at their barracks and partook of the sumptuous Christmas dinner that had been prepared. During the time she was in England, she delivered hundreds of illustrated talks about her beloved Yukon to convalescing soldiers, service and church groups and gatherings sponsored by the YMCA. She was recognized for her work with Yukon wildflowers and her lectures on the Yukon by being made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. When she returned to Canada after the war, she supported her husband when he was elected to parliament. From 1935 to 1940, she was the Yukon’s Member of Parliament. In 1993, she was recognized as having been of national significance at a plaque ceremony in Dawson City. You can learn more about the amazing Mrs. Black and her remarkable wartime service at the The North and World War I conference, which will be taking place in Whitehorse from May 9 to 12. A World War I study tour to Dawson City will take place from May 13 to 15. Entrepreneurs Share Success

StartUp Whitehorse invites business-minded people to join the group and connect with others on their way up by Darrell Hookey

ust because you have a great idea for a business, it doesn’t automatically follow that you have an idea of how to get it up and running. What does follow is a lot of research into areas you may have no experience with: market studies, permitting, supply chains, advertising, patents, etc. StartUp Whitehorse aims to help people along that path. With a membership, an entrepreneur can learn from others who have been there already, or are going through the same process at the same time. “There is the Internet and all of its resources, but it is a whole lot easier to be able to talk with other people,” says Alastair Smith, a member of StartUp Whitehorse. RP Singh , another member, agrees. “Connectivity adds a whole new dimension,” Singh says. “This is incredible because this is a hub,” says Smith. “People have been doing this forever, but we didn’t necessarily have spots where we were meeting up and sharing ideas with other startups outside of the Yukon. That helps because we understand we are not the only ones. And that, on its own, is extremely valuable. “You have your highs and lows: it is good to share your highs and, when you have a low ...” Singh finishes for him, “... you see how other people got out of that low.” “Yeah, for sure,” Smith continues. “Then there is networking and learning from people who were there: raising funds and try-

Alastair Smith (left) and RP Singh are members – and enthusiastic advocates – of StartUp Whitehorse, which is a forum for entrepreneurs to share their ideas and encouragement ing to hire resources or trying to figure out how intellectual laws work.” But Singh wants to make something clear: Successful businesspeople can benefit from StartUp Whitehorse just as much as a firsttimer. “This is not unidirectional, there is more to it than that,” Singh says. “When you are established, your disposition after five years is not going to be identical to when you started off. “As an established person, you have the chance to tap back into that whole ‘How did I do it when I was really hungry?’ and, ‘Hey, your ideas are fantastic, I have resources that could help you with that.’” Such sharing needs a venue that is safe and stimulating. So,

StartUp Whitehorse members meet in the community-driven shared workspace called (Co) space by Yukonstruct, which is located at the corner of Strickland Street and 2nd Avenue on the second floor. StartUp Whitehorse is an organic, virtual organization that has no executive or clearly defined roles for its members. Its relationship with StartUp Canada is aspirational, at best, with no tangible contributions. It’s a good match because (Co) space and StartUp Yukon have the same proponent: Yukonstruct. Singh says he likes to show off the amenities: “This is the main space,” he says waving his arms wide. “Typically you walk in here anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, and this is

Time for Birds with Jenny Trapnell

Oh, Chickadee! O

f all the birds of the forest, the chickadee is my favourite. Growing up in Nova Scotia, it was one of the first birds I knew. My family had a cottage in the forest on the shore of St. Margaret’s Bay, outside Halifax. The black caps regularly shared our play areas. This tiny, cheery bird is found as far south as Mexico on this continent, and in Yukon as far north

as the Dawson area, though some species have been recorded in Old Crow. Mostly seen in southern Yukon, chickadees keeps us company year-round and are frequent visitors to backyard feeders. Most of us are familiar with the black-capped chickadee, with its black bib and cap. Two other species also breed here: the boreal and the mountain. Most common is the boreal with a brownish head and breast.

Yukon conservation biologist and author Cameron Eckert takes a photo of mountain chickadees in Tagish PHOTO: Shyloh van Delft All of these little birds use variations of the “chick-a-dee dee dee” call that I heard out east, with the hardy boreal sounding a noticeable nasal tone. Only the black-capped and the mountain species sing a whistled song during spring mating, and only by males. The rarest of the three is the mountain chickadee, identified by its black cap, and black eye-stripe with a white eyebrow between

the two. Found in limited numbers with “hotspots” in the Tagish area, both the boreal and the mountain prefer older coniferous forests of white spruce and pine. It’s been seen, but not often, in several Whitehorse neighbourhoods. Chickadee fan and Tagish birder Shyloh van Delft has been conducting an observational study of mountain chickadees for a few years. Two years ago, she noticed

a small explosion of this species around Tagish, with up to 14 birds seen at one time at a feeder. (Shyloh, who writes a BeakingOff blog would love to hear about any Mountain Chickadee sightings.) Boreal chickadees are the most widely distributed chickadee in Yukon, but have been seen to be in decline in southern Canada, cont’d on page 22...

April 28, 2016

Oh, Chickadee! ... continued from page 21 and may be losing habitat due to logging activity. Black-capped chickadees seem to be more adaptable to changing habitat, and prefer deciduous forests and shrubs. In my nearby greenbelt in Riverdale, which is a mixed forest, a local senior gentleman has set up a few feeders to visit regularly. A flock of chickadees will feed from his hand, land on his head and similarly mob others who visit the site. It’s a child’s dream, to have a bird feed from their hand. Chickadees will do this if you are patient in offering them food – they like black-oiled sunflowers in particular. Chickadees like to grab-andrun from feeders, devouring seeds at perches nearby. They nest in tree cavities and begin establishing their territories in early spring, fledging their young by mid-June. You can also install standard nest boxes to attract this friendly forest bird. As spring returns, let’s take time to also enjoy our year-round feathered friend the chickadee, a steadfast companion through the long dark winter. Happy Birding! Jennifer Trapnell has a passion for birding. Please send comments about her articles to birds@whatsupyukon.com.
