INSIDE MAJOR FUNK’S DISCO INFERNO

The Yukon funk ensemble will be presenting a string of disco dance parties

Major Funk has outdone themselves once again. The Whitehorse-based ensemble is well-known locally for their energetic, over-the-top and often themed live shows, but it wouldn’t be an entirely accurate statement to say anyone has yet seen the likes of the newest massive-scale event the group has been cooking up for the past year—a disco dance party featuring a 13-piece band dubbed the Major Funk Orchestra.

stone.” Girard says the original plan was to present the show last November, but the band quickly realized it would take them a long time to put the show together the way they envisioned it. They gave themselves a one-year time frame.

“We’re known for coming up with crazy ideas and often following through,” says frontman and trumpeter Adrian Burrill. “We’ve done themed shows in the past and big shows with lots of collaborations with dancers and guest musicians. Our music has been lending itself more towards the genre of disco, with our production elements leaning more towards disco, which is making a comeback in mainstream music, too.”

“We have connections with the Problematic Orchestra members and some musicians, in general, in town, so we started recruiting people for this crazy idea and it just snowballed and got bigger and bigger with more musicians on board,” Burrill says. “We got SPYA on board for using their convention centre space, the SPYA Studio, which is awesome; we got the [Yukon] Arts Centre onboard; and we realized it was going to be a big undertaking and require some funding so we did an application to the Yukon government’s Arts Fund, through the Tourism and Culture department, and so it turned into a very big production over the course of almost a year.”

With the whole band sharing a love of disco music, they began to work on some classic cover songs and take more disco-style approaches in their playing on their original tunes. When they tossed around the idea of putting on a disco-themed performance, there was one clear caveat: if they did this, they had to make it huge. They first enlisted the Screen Production Yukon Association (SPYA), who now run the former Yukon Convention Centre as a studio and presentation space, and set to work building the rest of the team they needed.

Major Funk certainly had their work cut out for them. Between securing funding, finding musicians, charting out all of the orchestra parts and recreating the atmosphere of a 1970s discotheque, tasks had to be delegated. But with a shared vision and a driving passion for this project, the band members were ready to step up to the plate, taking a divide-and-conquer approach.

“I always had a pipe dream of doing a giant Major Funk disco show,” says bassist Etienne Girard, who has led the band since its 2014 inception. “We were chatting about it and we collectively decided to just put the idea into

“Then we got a little excited and said we were going to do it in April,” he continued. “Even though we were able to accomplish our goals, the funding wouldn’t come through until after the show and we wouldn’t even know if we had the funding. It’s a very intensive production and we just can’t do it without support from grants and from sponsorships and from all of these alliances we needed to make.”

Major Funk consists of singer and keyboardist Seline HeyligersHare, guitarist Brent Gallant, saxophonist and flautist Tobey Moisey, and drummer Anders Grasholm in addition to Burrill and Girard. Though the band has covered disco songs in the past, Heyligers-Hare, who sings and plays keys for the band, says they were never able to fully bring them to life.

“All these songs we play, we’re never able to cover all the parts,” explains Heyligers-Hare. “We never have a full horn section, and there are always a billion piano and synth parts as violin parts on top of everything. It was always a want that we had, and it’s just nice to be able to cover all of your bases and play the song how it was written, which is really cool and such a privilege.”

The band will be joined in the Major Funk Orchestra by an array of local and flown-in guest musicians including Sarah-Jane Poirier, Katie Avery, Ellorie McKnight, Andrew MacKelvie, Michel Vallieres and backup singers Lindsey Walker and Anneky Kenny-Robichaud, with dancers Valerie Herdes and Marcy Mills.

The events will also feature sets from DJ Jon Gelinas and DJ Katabatik. The stage set was designed by local artist Tara Kolla, and countless people have worked behind the scenes on the technical and logistical sides of the show as well. To fulfill their man-

dates with SPYA and Music Yukon, Girard will be leading a week-long series of technical workshops in the SPYA space based around the show, covering topics such as live multitracking, show setup and inear monitoring operation.

“A show like this doesn’t come up very often, and it presented itself as a good opportunity to provide some training workshops through SPYA and Music Yukon about what it takes to put on a show of this calibre,” Girard explains. “This also helped us get those partners on board, so it was a win-win for everybody.”

This run of shows also marks a bittersweet turning point for Major Funk, ending one chapter and

beginning another. These shows will be Heyligers-Hare’s last with the band, as she will be stepping down from the group to focus on her own music project, Hendrika.

“It was a weird choice for me; it’s a hard decision,” she says. “I really love being in this band and it’s been seven years of my life, which is crazy. It’s something that holds a special place in my heart and in my life and allows me to have a different level of expression and energy release as a frontperson and a boisterous big-lead singer.

“Obviously, the friendship and connections made over these many years is really important to me, so it was a really big decision. It really just came down to scheduling conflicts and struggling to manage my time as I ramp up Hendrika. I feel like I have to give that my all.”

Girard and Burrill both express support for Heyligers-Hare and show excitement for her future,

while also standing firm on the fact that Major Funk will continue. They even have plans to head into the studio this winter to begin their next full-length album.

“We love Selina and she’s just crushing it with Hendrika,” says Burrill. “We’re super proud of her and super appreciative of all of her contributions to Major Funk over the years. We’ve had some turnover since 2014; we’ve been a band forever so that’s kind of inevitable, but she’s been a huge part since the pretty early days. It’s bittersweet, but I’m happy for her moving on.”

While the band spends a lot of time on the road, it’s special for all of its members to be able to bring the biggest shows of their career, so far, not just to their home of Whitehorse, but to other northern communities as well.

“These communities don’t often get a big production like this,” says Heyligers-Hare. “To be able to enrich the communities and engage folks is really such an honour, and I’m really happy that we can do that for people.”

The Major Funk Orchestra’s Disco Dance Party series takes place Oct. 3 in Whitehorse at the SPYA Studio (formerly the Yukon Convention Centre); Oct. 4 in Haines Junction at the St. Elias Convention Centre; and Oct. 11 at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall in Dawson City. Major Funk thanks the Yukon Arts Fund, Yukon Arts Centre, Music Yukon, Yukon Rendezvous, SPYA, Northern Vision Development, Jazz Yukon, Junction Arts and Music, Klondike Visitors Association, and Integraphics for their support. HOUSE PAINT FROM HERE

The

paint gets on my hand, drips on the ground ...

But that’s OK. It’s mostly stuff from the earth anyways. It will wash out of my clothes. This paint is not plastic.

It is hard to think about plastic because it’s everywhere, in everything. It’s in the keyboard I’m typing on, in the glasses I’m looking through at this screen. I don’t know how to live without it. Steps I take towards using less seem miniscule—to cry in the ocean, as they say. Doing something to resist the habits of our plastic-using society often seems to cause more problems than it solves.

I take heart from Adrienne Maree Brown’s idea that change is fractal. This means that small changes can and do affect larger systems. This makes me hope that things I actually do with my hands and materials will change what I imagine, what I can imagine—and, as I share them, what we can imagine.

I have been a painter for many years. I have hosted countless workshops for folks of a wide range of ages. I have used a lot of acrylic and latex paint, washed my brushes in countless sinks. Those plastics wind up being part of our water system.

Paint adds considerable microplastics to our environment. In the Yukon River, the paint from road markings makes up a significant amount of the microplastics in the water. I can’t imagine a world where we don’t paint lines on the road (I throw up my hands).

In my despondency, I watch too many Instagram reels. Wandering in those rabbit holes, I came across a recipe for house paint that uses clay, sand, flour and a

small amount of borax, which is a laundry booster. If you google it, you’ll find it.

When I was invited to carry out a residency to create an installation at Raven ReCentre, with fishskin tanning artist Cheryl McLean, I wanted to actually try this paint.

My work with Yukon clay set me up to try this. I had a bucket of clay slurry settling in my backyard. I poured some of it into an old pillowcase and hung it up to strain. I was able to find some sand nearby and sieve it.

I set up my camp stove outside Raven, and Cheryl and I experimented with making non-plasticbased paints and adhesives. I took a cup of Hinterland’s flour and mixed it into two cups of cold water. I added this to six cups of boiling water and cooked over a

low heat, stirring constantly, till it thickened.

I mixed a couple of tablespoons of borax into the sand. I then mixed roughly equal parts of sand, clay and flour paste in a bucket with a drill, using a paint-mixing attachment.

There are many more unpredictable elements at play here than with commercially-engineered paint. I could see that getting a feel for it would take a while. I had to add more water. It’s meant to be thicker than housepaint, but I wasn’t sure how thick. The first strokes didn’t look so good.

I wanted to test it on painted, primed and bare drywall. I had some prepared scraps, about 2x3 feet each. I primed them 2/3 of

Were you a student of Jack Hulland Elementary School (“JHES”) between January 1, 2007 and June 30, 2022 and subjected to a hold, restraint and/or placed in seclusion?

If so, your rights are affected by a class action lawsuit

WHAT IS A CLASS ACTION?

A class action is a lawsuit filed by one person on behalf of a group of people with the same legal claims

WHAT IS THIS CLASS ACTION ABOUT?

A class action lawsuit, (in this case, the “Lawsuit”), has been brought against the Government of Yukon (“Yukon”). The class action claims that there was a systemic practice of using holds, restraints and seclusion to control students’ behaviour at JHES.

AM I A CLASS MEMBER?

You are a Class Member if you were a student of JHES between January 1, 2007 and June 30, 2022, you were subjected to a hold, restraint, and/or you were locked in a room and/or placed in seclusion, and you did not opt- out of the class action

If you think you may be a Class Member or if you have questions, please contact the lawyers below.

WHAT IS THE SETTLEMENT?

A settlement of the Lawsuit has been reached with Yukon where, among other things:

• Class Members are entitled to make a claim for compensation through a Claims Process that limits the burden of time and cost on Class Members;

• A special counselling fund will be available to reimburse Class Members and their families for counselling and similarly related treatment that is not covered by any government or private insurance plan;

• Yukon will issue a public acknowledgement and apology; and

• Yukon will be responsible for the costs of the Claims Process and the reasonable costs and disbursements of the Plaintiffs incurred in this action

More information, including a more detailed notice, can be found at www.tuckercarruthers.ca or at www.cfmlawyers.ca/class-action/jhes, or by request via email at jackhulland@cfmlawyers.ca

We strongly recommend all Class Members provide the lawyers with their contact information to receive further details about the settlement and next steps.

WHO ARE MY LAWYERS?

You are represented by Tucker Carruthers and CFM Lawyers

WHO PAYS THE LAWYERS?

The lawyers will be paid from the compensation paid to Class Members. Those fees must be approved by the Court.

The lawyers will request court approval of:

• Approximately $240,000 in disbursements, which are the costs paid by the lawyers to date for things like experts, filing fees, postage, and travel. Under the settlement Yukon will be responsible for these costs (in whole or in part); and

• Legal fees of 25% for claims made under Tier 1, and 30% for claims made under Tier 2 and Tier 3.

WHAT DO I DO NOW?

On October 29-30, 2025 at the Supreme Court of Yukon located at 2134 2nd Ave, Whitehorse YT, the plaintiffs will apply for court approval of the settlement and legal fees

Class Members who do not oppose the proposed settlement and/or the legal fees do not need to appear at the settlement approval hearing.

If you are a Class Member and you wish to comment on or oppose the settlement and/or the legal fees:

• Submit a written submission by mail or email (jackhulland@cfmlawyers.ca) to the lawyers, postmarked no later than October 17, 2025

• All written submissions must state the nature of any comments or objection, and state whether the Class Member intends to appear at the settlement approval hearing.

• All timely written submissions will be provided to the Court.

• If you want to participate but do not provide timely written submissions, you will need to attend the hearing on October 29, 2025 and ask permission of the Court.

I am not a Class Member, can I participate?

• Only Class Members (and the guardians of Class Members who are minors) can participate.

• If you are not a Class Member you cannot participate

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

If the settlement is approved, a claims process will begin for Class Members to make claims for compensation.

Contact the lawyers below to make sure you are on the mailing list for future notices in the class action.

THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF YUKON FRANCOPHONE WOMEN

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Les Essentielles. For this occasion, short biographies of Yukon francophone women will be presented throughout the year in the pages of our paper. Thank you to l’Association francoyukonnaise, l’émission Rencontres, and l’Aurore boréale for their collaboration in this project.

Céline Roy

Céline Roy was born in Sainte-Thérèse de Blainville, in Quebec.

She did her primary, secondary and college studies in Rimouski. She then obtained a bachelor’s degree in education at the Université de Rimouski and did superior studies at Université Laval and the University of British Columbia. Céline arrived in the Yukon on August 15, 1991, after driving from Vancouver to the capital. She just obtained a teaching position at Whitehorse Elementary School. Once she arrived in Whitehorse, she made friends rapidly. They all had a great time discovering the Yukon together.

The following year, Céline met her partner, Christian Tessier, at the Frostbite Music Festival. It was love at first sight. After the birth of their second daughter, they decided to return to Quebec to be closer to their families.

Céline continued her teaching career in Quebec where she held the positions of teacher, academic counsellor and school principal. After more than 34 loyal years in the field of education, she decided to take a well-deserved retirement.

In 2018, the couple moved back to the Yukon. Céline worked for five years as vice principal and principal. She retired a second time in 2023.

She got involved in the Yukon francophone community by sitting on the board of directors of the Yukon francophone historical society and taking part in activities offered by the Association franco-yukonnaise for young retirees.

Life in the North suits her to a T and she feels privileged to be able to say that the Yukon is her home.

Maryne Dumaine

Maryne Dumaine was born in Paris, France, in 1980. As a child, she liked to draw and put on shows for her family. She told her parents that she would one day live far away …

When she was around 20, she went to live in Australia for one year. She came to Canada in January 2004. She travelled across the country and arrived in the Yukon in the summer of that year. She immediately went to the Moosehide Gathering in Dawson, and this event opened her eyes to a different way of seeing life.

Since 2004, Maryne has worked for almost all the Yukon francophone organizations, as an employee, contract worker or volunteer. She decided to stay in the Yukon due to job opportunities and to her growth as a woman.

Maryne connected with Les Essentielles through a painting workshop. Thereafter, she had children, and the francophone Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program was very important for her. She appreciated the community support during her pregnancies. She then had a few contracts with Les Essentielles and occupied various positions, including acting executive director. She was president of the group from 2019 to 2025.

Since 2018, Maryne has been the director of the Aurore boréale, the Yukon francophone newspaper. Since 2024, she has been the president of Réseau.Presse, the national network of francophone newspapers outside of Quebec.

An artistic soul, Maryne practices dance, photography, literary arts and drawing. Through the francophone community, Maryne has found a lot of opportunities.

Nathalie Parenteau

Nathalie Parenteau was born in Montreal in a family with deep roots in the Bois-Francs region of Quebec.

In 1983, Nathalie arrived in Whitehorse to volunteer with a youth group and immediately fell in love with the region. She worked for three months at the Yukon Conservation Society and, during weekends, she learned tricks on life in the North.

She lived for a few years in a luxurious, reinforced prospector tent at the foot of Nares Mountain. During the summers, she worked at the Carcross Visitor Information Centre and met some legendary Yukon characters.

Still in her twenties, Nathalie decided to go to university and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Western University. With her diploma in hand, she came back to the territory and decided to reconnect with her artistic side.

She took part in several exhibitions and participated in murals. For the last 25 years, Nathalie has lived entirely from her art, and her work has been showcased in several galleries in the Yukon, Canada and Alaska. Her beautiful painting Spirit Bear was part of the art collection at the office of the Commissioner of Yukon from 2018 to 2023.

Nathalie and Peter, her long-time partner, live in Whitehorse and both share a great passion for dogs, reading and wild spaces. They frequently visit their families in Quebec and California.

Nathalie is honoured to say that she saw the creation of Les Essentielles, the Yukon Francophone Women’s group, and designed their first logo.

SSuzanne Bertrand

uzanne Bertrand was born in 1947 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She started curling when she was 12. She moved to the Yukon in 1967 to begin her teaching career. For over 35 years, Suzanne worked in several elementary schools in Whitehorse.

She started volunteering with the Whitehorse Curling Club in 1981. Her career as a curling coach started in 1987 and she accompanied several teams to the Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Canada Winter Games, Arctic Winter Games and Brier.

In 1988, she won Sport Yukon’s Coach of the Year Award and the Excellence in Education Award in 1990.

In 1999, she was recognized nationally with the 3M Coach of the Year Award. In 2004, she received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the City of Whitehorse; and in 2005, the Canadian Curling Association recognized Suzanne with a Volunteer of the Year Award for all of Canada.

In 1985, Suzanne challenged the Yukon Change of Name Act, which denied married women the right to change their surnames. She won her case and was able to retain her maiden name of Bertrand.

Suzanne Bertrand died on Feb. 15, 2010, in Whitehorse, at the age of 62.

In 2011, she was posthumously inducted into the Yukon Sports Hall of Fame in the coach/builder category.

Since 2010, the Whitehorse Curling Club has awarded the Suzanne Bertrand Volunteer of the Year Award.

Through her positive attitude and optimism, she has left an indelible mark on the fields of curling and education in the

BLUEBERRY SEASON

A Blue Sky Blueberry Day at the White Pass

On the first Friday in September, I headed off into the White Pass, with my blueberry gang,

It was an unusual year, first because of the weather—so sunny and warm—and second because we were missing our fourth member, who was recovering from a shoulder injury and had to stay home. The jokes were not quite as spicy and the shrieks not quite as loud, and we wished she were with us, but we managed to have a pretty good time and came home with a collective yield of almost 50 cups!

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup cornmeal

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 1/4 cup sugar

• 1 Tbsp baking powder

• 1 tsp kosher salt

• 1 tsp dried thyme or 1 Tbsp fresh

• 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

• 1 cup buttermilk or yogurt

• 2 large eggs

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

• 1/2 cup cream cheese, diced (freeze cream cheese for 10 minutes to make it easier to dice)

• 2 tsp butter, melted, for brushing overtop once the cornbread is baked

METHOD

4. Add wet ingredients to the flour mixture and stir with a wooden spoon, lifting from the bottom of the bowl to incorporate all of the flour.

5. Stir in the cream cheese in two batches, trying not to overmix. Spoon into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

7. Remove from the oven and brush the top with melted butter. Cool on a rack for 20 minutes before cutting. Serve with butter and honey for a delicious breakfast.

Makes one 8x8 pan, or 8 to 12 servings.

First you pick, then you clean

We found that the best berries were on bushes tucked away in the shade underneath the spruce and balsam fir; the berries in full sun were smaller and sometimes even withered. Getting under those branches and into the damp gullies required ever more imaginative contortions of the body, and after four hours, three sore backs were ready to call it quits.

Three passenger trains passed below our berry-picking perch and we waved our little hearts out at the folks inside, who waved back with equal enthusiasm. Why is it so fun to wave at people on a train? Or at people on the cliff who are waving at you? I don’t know why, but it sure is heartlifting.

The guy at Canada Customs asked us how far we went. We said not far, which was true, and then he asked us, “How were the berries?” Three voices chorused, “Great!”

We drank sparkling water from cans on the way home, and a funny little date-filled treat provided by our kind driver, and declared the 2025 expedition a success. Well, a qualified success because we missed our Number Four, but she’ll be back next year.

In the meantime, there’s a world of new blueberry recipes to explore, ones that don’t use too many of those precious cups. Here’s a new one.

1. Preheat oven to 375°F and butter an 8- x 8-inch baking dish. Grease an 8-inch square baking dish or line with parchment.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and thyme until thoroughly combined. Add in the blueberries and toss to coat with the dry ingredients.

3. In a different bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs and melted butter.

Best breakfast: Blueberry Cornbread, with butter and honey

the way down and painted them with house paint for the top third.

From what I read, I understood that this paint would not be waterproof. Then a dog came by and peed on my test panel when it was just the first coat, and that didn’t bother it. It got me wondering how water resistant it actually was.

First coat was streaky, though once I got the water content dialed I was impressed with how it stuck to the painted surface.

Second coat was better. Then, following instructions, I sponged it with water and polished it with a yoghurt-container lid. Plastic, I guess, but they’re everywhere.

The result was a lovely textured beige colour I would never have picked as a paint chip but that gave me a feeling of satisfaction.

To test its weathering, I painted the far half of the traffic bollards in front of Raven. Check them out if you’re there. It’s hard to

My first attempt was a bit lumpy. It dries a lot lighter than it goes on!

see as the colour isn’t far off the concrete and wood themselves. I figure the top is worn off but the sides probably still have paint on them.

I painted halfway across the garden planters that my partner Dean made in our backyard, which was often watered with the sprinkler. The top seems to have worn off, but the side isn’t all that different yet.

I painted the vertical side of our wall tent. I can see some marks from water, but the paint film itself was unchanged a few weeks later.

I painted the underside of the structure that shelters our front door. It was primed first. Two coats, even without burnishing, gives me something very even. The paint shows me the places where water seeps in, but mostly, this paint is sheltered from the rain. My second coat was more watered down because I was running out of paint. I think the action of that coat partly dissolving the coat before is what made it so even.

I added red iron oxide to the paint and painted the walls behind our wood stove. This was just one coat—the pigment is also quite opaque.

Will it last? Who knows? But our plastics are lasting in our environment longer than we want them to. We don’t know what they are doing there. The clay and sand in this paint have been hanging out in this environment for a long time. When it wears out, they will be at home here.

I’ll write an update article when I have news of how these paint jobs last … maybe next spring.

If you have ideas for the Material ReCulturing column, please email them to me at materialreculturing@yahoo.com. Let’s keep trying stuff. n House paint from here cont’d from page 4

The paint goes on streaky. You can’t use a roller. Try to get the brushstrokes going in all directions.

STEEL TOES AND SUCCESS STORIES

Yukon Women in Trades and Technology celebrates 25 years

In August 2000, a group of women had a vision that seemed almost revolutionary for its time: What if young women across the Yukon could see themselves operating heavy machinery and building the territory’s future with their own hands?

Twenty-five years later, that vision has transformed into Yukon Women in Trades and Technology (YWITT), an organization that has persistently chipped away at one of Canada’s most stubborn gender gaps. YWITT was co-founded by Betty Irwin, a program director for YWITT from 2000 till 2009.

On Oct. 3, YWITT will be celebrating their 25th anniversary by inviting the community to a barbecue, with lawn games and more. “Dust off your going-out Carhartts, don your fanciest steel toes” reads the invitation, a playful nod to an organization that has never taken itself too seriously while tackling very serious issues.

The numbers tell a compelling story according to the press release. When YWITT held its first Young Women Exploring Trades Conference at the then Yukon College in 2000, few could have predicted the ripple effects. Back then it was a one-day event. Now it has evolved into a cornerstone event that takes students out of classrooms and into businesses, to meet women working in the field.

YWITT’s impact expands far beyond annual conferences. In 2006, Yukon College, YWITT and the territory partnered to develop the Women Exploring Trades and Technology program at the Yukon College, a 16-week introductory course offered by Yukon College

and designed to introduce women to technologies and trades.

“Over the past 25 years, we’ve seen individuals journey through our programs at different touchpoints, some starting as students in our after-school programs and growing into Red Seal journeypeople and instructors; and others engaging with our adult programming and taking the leap into the skilled trades as a second career avenue,” says Jodie McGregor, YWITT’s executive director. She adds that having YWITT’s support network has helped so many community members to grow and thrive.

The stories that emerge from YWITT programs are success stor-

ies, as it reads in their press release: In 2011, Maureen Moorse, described as “a trailblazer for apprenticing in carpentry in the Yukon,” led a team of 11 women ranging from their mid-twenties to early sixties in building a greenhouse at the Dawson City Women’s Shelter. The same year, female inmates at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre built a greenhouse for the Whitehorse Community Garden.

These initiatives reveal something significant about the YWITT philosophy: They meet people where they are. Whether it is Grade 8 students learning sheet metal work through the Cool Tools program (later rebranded as

Power Up!), women gathering for bicycle-maintenance workshops, or welding programs designed for women and non-binary individuals—YWITT has consistently adapted to community needs.

When asked what YWITT’s most significant achievement in advancing equity in trades and technology has been, Jodie McGregor says, “With equity work there isn’t usually one significant indicator that creates change. The growth and advancement has happened throughout the twenty-five years of small changes, with the goal of making a more equitable trades environment for our current and future community members.”

According to the press release,

across Canada, women’s registration in trades schools has steadily increased, year over year, but then there is a drop-off. Women experience higher attrition rates in apprenticeship programs and aren’t staying in trades. The reasons are discrimination, harassment or isolation. YWITT’s response: Their “Building Strong Leaders” program that includes all genders, operating on the principle that great leaders create great workplaces. McGregor explains what this looks like in practice “Recognizing the unique challenges faced by women and gender-diverse people in trades, the program also built resilience skills to help these leaders sustain their efforts, over time, without burning out. Perhaps most importantly, by giving participants tools to support others’ leadership journeys, YWITT created a ripple effect where more people are now better equipped to mentor and develop other tradeswomen and gender-diverse tradespeople. We have also seen some of these participants thrive in skill-sharing in our youth and adult programming,” says McGregor.

As YWITT celebrates 25 years, their vision for the future stays rooted in practical action. “Going forward, the organization’s commitment to working with and for tradespeople demonstrates our serious intent to scale this impact,” McGregor notes, suggesting their model of community-based leadership development can create lasting social change.

On Oct. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., everyone is invited for an evening of community and celebration to ring in YWITT’s 25th year and to honour all those who helped YWITT to go where it is today. The event will feature lawn games, a barbecue, a Kids Craft Zone, face painting and more. It will take place at Mount Sima, 770 Mount Sima Road, in Whitehorse. n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive.

TAAGISH MÉNÉ (TAGISH LAKE)

A “wishbone” of wonder

During the 2024 paddle season, I celebrated my milestone 50th birthday by paddling over 50 Yukon lakes. The information gathered was used to create the 50 Lakes Yukon guidebook, now available for purchase online and in local shops. In this final article in the summer series highlighting notable Yukon lakes, Tagish Lake is profiled for those seeking an epic fall destination to enjoy jaw-dropping 360-degree views and autumn colours. While it’s hard to forget that you’re paddling a lake named for the howling sound made by the wind in the rocks across the lake, there are calmer days to be enjoyed on Tagish Lake—still moments when you can float and turn in any direction to enjoy endless mountain landscapes and slopes bathed in colour.

This transboundary lake spans

both the Yukon and British Columbia, with approximately twothirds of it located in B.C. It lies within the Traditional Territories of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation, in the Yukon, and the Taku River Tlingit First Nation in B.C. At 119 kilometres in length, Taagish Méné is the longest and deepest lake in the Yukon, and also one of its largest.

Shaped like a wishbone, it features several basins, including Nares Lake, Graham Inlet and Moose Arm. The Taku Arm, which extends to the east, is accessible only by water. Notably, a meteorite measuring four metres in diameter and weighing 56 tons, fell onto the frozen Taku Arm in 2000 and is now part of the University of Alberta’s meteorite collection.

The western arm, Tséi Zhéłe’ Méné’ (Windy Arm), offers accessible recreation but is known for its high winds. Tagish Lake is all about the majesty, whether you’re on its waters, shores or hiking nearby trails. The Déi Łèiłú

(Butterfly Trail) offers a short loop in the Conrad Campground; while the Sam McGee Trail, across from the Klondike Highway, leads into the alpine below Montana Mountain. Nares Mountain, to the east of Carcross, also gives hikers breathtaking views of the lake.

The Tagish River/Taagish Too’e/Taagish Héeni Habitat Protection Area, also known as Six Mile or Tagish Narrows, stretches nearly seven kilometres between Marsh Lake and Tagish Lake. This area is important for migratory birds, including swans, geese and ducks, that rely on it for feeding in the spring. The waters also support various species of wildlife, including beavers, muskrats, fish and a range of carnivores along the shores. Taagish Méné drains northward through the Tagish

River, flowing into Marsh Lake and then into the Yukon River.

You can access Tagish Lake’s Windy Arm from the South Klondike Highway, Turn east at km 90 into the Conrad Camp-

ground. Or continue on to km 77, to the Yukon-B.C. border pullout. To access the north end of the lake, head to Tagish, to launch points on either side of the

River Bridge. n
