Flood preparedness in Atlin – what you need to know to stay safe
Floods are common and can happen at any time of year. Whether caused by heavy rain or rapid snowmelt, floods can happen quickly and with little warning. Being prepared can make all the difference in protecting your home, yourself and those you live with.
Prepare your home
There are simple steps you can take in and around your home and property to help prevent flood damage. Move valuables and appliances above potential flood levels, clean your gutters regularly and keep nearby storm drains clear of debris. If you’re able, consider installing sump pumps, backflow valves and applying weather protection sealant around basement windows and the base of ground level doors.
Research insurance coverage
Insurance is one of the best ways to protect yourself in the event of an emergency. Check with your insurance representative to determine if sewer backup and/or residential flood insurance is available for your property. You can also contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada at 1-844-227-5422
Know where to find information
If a flood occurs or is expected, information will be shared online at EmergencyInfoBC.ca, the EmergencyInfoBC X (formerly Twitter) account and the Taku River Tlingit First Nation’s social media channels. If an Evacuation Alert or Order is issued, you may also be notified through broadcast-intrusive alerts or door-to-door notifications. Bookmark these sources in advance so you know where to get verified and trusted information.
Staying safe during a flood
During a flood, stay safe by following the instructions of local officials. In the event of an Evacuation Alert, be ready to leave on short notice. If an Evacuation Order is issued, you are at risk and must leave immediately with your grab-and-go bags.
Do not drive or walk across flooded roads, and do not attempt to cross rivers or flowing streams. Six inches of rushing water can knock an adult off their feet. Two feet of water can carry away most vehicles, including trucks and SUVs.
Returning home after a flood
Return home only when authorities say it’s safe. Watch for hazards like contaminated water, structural damage and mold. Document damage for insurance claims and begin cleanup with protective gear. Make a home emergency plan
Floods are unpredictable, but your response doesn’t have to be. Make a plan in advance. Knowing what to do, where to go and who to contact will reduce stress and help keep you focused and safe. Make your home emergency plan at PreparedBC.ca/EmergencyReady or pick up a hardcopy fill-in-the-blanks template at the Museum or RCMP in Atlin. For more information about flood preparedness, visit PreparedBC.ca/Floods.

Atlin Placer Miners Association (APMA)
14th August 2025 - Gold Price $US 3,335.90oz/$CDN 4,607.94oz Selected Summaries From 1904 BC Annual Reports on Atlin Mineral Division Claims (Notes in Italics by author)
Overview: Prospecting Atlin mineral claims, as opposed to placer claims has not received the attention they clearly deserve in 1904. Still, for all this, there have been a large number of mineral claims located in the district, a few of which have received some material development. The records of the Atlin office show that in 1903 there were new 57 mineral properties, and 112 certificates of work issued, while in 1904 some 105 claims were recorded and 122 certificates of work issued.
To this very day in 2025, and 121 years since 1904, the search still goes on for finding an Atlin mother lode.
The Imperial Group: The greatest amount of work done on any group of claims in the Atlin Mining Division was on the Imperial Group, Munro Mountain, immediately north west of Atlin, overlooking the valley of Pine creek. Work was being carried out by the Nimrud Syndicate, but in 1902 work was suspended.
Lake View Property: Located at 800 to 1,000 feet above Pine creek on the west side of Boulder Creek, this property consists of Lake View, Grand View and Last Chance claims. There are several quartz veins on the properties. The property bad been under bond to an English syndicate, whose local director informed the Mines Inspector on average samples he had obtained had assays running about $8.40 to the ton, mostly as free gold.
Red Jacket Property: (adjacent to Yellow Jacket on Pine Creek ), was discovered in 1899.
The Nimrud Syndicate sunk a shaft about 50 feet deep on the property, and reported good gold values but the company got into litigation and work was stopped. The property since has passed into the hands of Mr. J. M. Ruffner, of the North Columbia Gold Mining Company. Mr. Ruffner reportedly showed the Mines Inspector a sack of quartz in which gold was visible in nearly every sample. The claim is equipped with a small steam hoisting and pumping plant, and it is understood to be the intention of the owners to continue the work in 1905.
Beavis Group. Located along the Atlin lake shore immediately north of Atlin, the Beavis Group was reported to be under bond to a Skagway enterprise, who have already done some work on the property, The Mines Inspector took mine samples from tailings dumps. These samples were assayed by a Government Assayer, whose results indicate the presence of gold, but not in sufficient quantity for commercial profit.
Copper Island. This property, located in the First Narrows, Torres Inlet, was worked by a Mr. Laverdiere. Through his work, a number of Calcite veins a few inches in width, in which spots of bright native copper was seen, was from these veinlets that slabs of native copper were obtained. These veinlets, while exceedingly interesting, are not sufficiently large, nor does the native copper in them occur in sufficient quantity, to be of importance commercially. If you are ever passing through First Narrows, Mr. Laverdier’s short Adit is easily accessible only a few metres from the lake shore, also spots of native copper easily are visible inside the short Adit

“Desert Sky”
When dawn lights the desert Color will spring to life.
Flora will paint the landscape With petals of yellow and pink Proudly revealing their display As a garden to be cherished.
Wind will whisper off canyon walls

Sharing secrets from long ago. A breeze coming through a field of grain Will coax plants to wave at passersby. Beautiful wild mustangs will be seen In streams winding throughout the land.
A desert sky with long days Of sun will enhance colors Until sunshine begins to fade And purple shade flows over all.
Then, sundown will usher in A breath of scented cool air As the answer to a prayer.

OPPORTUNITY: NEW ORGANIZATION IN TOWN

Our Story
Atlin Family Church, Pastors Dale & Rena Mae McDonald look forward to meeting you. Let us introduce ourselves.
We met in grade 5 & Dale soon realized that Rena Mae was set apart from the other girls. At 10 years old God introduced us, first as friends & later in grade 10 we started to realize we wanted to get to know each other in a deeper relationship though dating & eventually getting married Oct 1/1983.
We both gave our hearts to The Lord at a young age, but we reaffirmed our faith in Jesus in a denominational church. Although we met many wonderful church family members it did not feel like home for us. We felt God leading us to a deeper relationship with Him & apart from a denominational structure.
Over the years we attended several churches & found our home in churches that taught faith in God & His Word. In 1999 after attending a faith focused church in Valleyview, AB we felt called to Calgary Bible Training Center graduating with honors in 2000. The call to the north was realized in 2003 at which time we moved to Whitehorse, Yukon.
Our time in the north has been sharing what we had learned in bible school while working in our various business or management positions in Whitehorse (& briefly in Prince George, BC). When in Prince George, we soon realized it would be a short stay. The Atlin journey began as we moved back from Prince George March 2024. We truly missed the north & were excited to come home! Atlin is such a beautiful location & community to call home.
To be honest we did not know the extent of the plan of God in coming back to the northwest. God began to reveal His plan during the summer of 2024 & we are excited to take the next step with Him with Atlin Family Church, a new church plant.
Atlin Family Church is a Christian, non-denominational -faith teaching ministry that is word based. A community where you can feel at home & ask questions without being judged. A place that gives you room to grow & build your personal relationship with Jesus. We believe every human being has a different journey in life & that is OK. What determines your destination is determined by your life choices. Having a personal relationship with Jesus puts you on the path of life! The sooner we find Him the sooner real life begins!
We believe:
We are what God’s Word says that we are! We can have what God’s Word says we can have! We can do what God’s Word says we can do!
We are part of The Body of Christ instructed to continue the ministry of Christ in Atlin. BC & Yukon.
