There is a new space in town at Arts Underground, until Nov. 1, and it contains a show of

The team at Arts Underground figured that the room that had been used for the executive director’s office was being underused, so they moved the printers and ordered track lighting.

The space’s future is still being figured out. It may extend their art supply store, where artists can pick up materials. It may be used, primarily, to extend the members’ showing space, where staff maintain a year-round group show of Yukon-artist members, in addition to programming in their two feature galleries.

In the meantime, the organization put out a call, asking Yukon youth aged 13 to 18, from across the territory, to submit one piece each that they are proud of, in any medium.

From such an open request, it’s a coherent show. I encountered a strong presence of surrealism and anime, as well as other aesthetics. The show includes works on paper, canvas and board, as well as ceramic and one garment. The young artists have used collage, digital drawing, ink, pencil, acrylic, watercolour and markers.

Danee Marsh’s pencil portrait of Leon spends over half the face’s height on an enormous mouth. The ceramic face by Josie Kuzel, from Dawson City, also features a wide-open mouth.

Jean-Christophe A. Ménard’s à la récherche du colouleur uses multiple faces, but just from the nose down. Mikhaela Aljano’s Face also reveals only nose and lips, with a well-rendered hand among swirling white paint strokes. Lily Masserey’s anime-influenced Time Traveller’s wide blue eyes seem dazzled by what they can see. Intriguing.

Adolescence is awhile ago for me, but I remember its discomforts and the struggle of evolving identities. Many of the works include faces or heads modified for expressive purposes, which seem to speak to this theme. Natalie Slykhuis’ Donut Worry faces drip like the glazed icing evoked by the title. Élise L’Hereux’ Dans ma tête draws a transparent red bandeau across eyes, as part of a composition that includes storm clouds and scribbles.

Digital illustrations by Riley Cyr and Isis Van Bibber also alter the face; the former with design elements that seem painted on, and the latter with bangs falling down from the horns on the crown of the head.

Watercolours on paper by Fin Doll, Sebastien O’Mara and Alyssia Lauzon all make unsettling and original changes to a head or face.

OThe 10-minute athlete portrait focuses on the challenges of redefining life after stepping away from competitive athletics

n Oct. 2, Etienne GeoffroyGagnon hosted the premiere of his newest passion project at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC). Visions of the North is a 10-minute documentary short that delves into the Yukon athlete’s journey from a life of competitive skiing to navigating uncertainty in new beginnings.

“I’d been competing with Team Canada for about six years; last ski season was my first season deciding to step away from competitive skiing and take skiing down a different route with more filmmaking and that type of stuff,” Geoffroy-Gagnon says. “I wanted to capture all those emotions, and everything I was going through in real time, and this was a perfect

opportunity to do that.”

Geoffroy-Gagnon is careful not to give too much away from the

film, as watching it is the only real way to get the full picture of the athlete’s experiences and the

reasons for his decisions, including that of stepping away from a life of competitive skiing and his growing interest in filmmaking.

“There was a lot of internal dialogue there, and a lot of the classic competitive pressures,” he says. “I chose to start pursuing a different route and open up other options, but the movie goes into that in more detail.”

Visions of the North was Geoffroy-Gagnon’s first foray into longer-form video storytelling. He teamed up with Vancouver filmmaker Ty Ulrich and got Mount Sima involved as well.

“I got a bunch of the locals to help me out and we did a nice park shoot at Sima,” Geoffroy-Gagnon says. “The rest of the shooting happened in the backcountry in Squamish and Whistler [B.C.].”

The backcountry shoots took place outside ski resorts, so in addition to plotting out how to properly film the action shots they needed, Goeffrey-Gagnon and Ulrich had to be cognizant of their safety in regards to their travel and the weather. They even built their own jumps for the project.

“We started planning it throughout the summer,” Goeffrey-Gagnon says (meaning the summer of 2024). “And then winter came, and I’d say within the first few months of winter we got

The

Erin Neufeld grew up in Whitehorse, where, after 15 years living in Aotearoa, she

returned. She lives with her husband, three children, and various animals. She loves exploring the world around her and learning about the connections that make us who we are.

FIRST HUNT, AND MY SON’S FIRST GROUSE

We awaken to a world touched by Midas—the aspen trembles with golden rays, and the sunbeams slant through the pines in gleaming shafts of light. The air prickles with thoughts of snow, carrying that heady aroma of ripe berries and decaying leaves. It is autumn. Time for berrypicking, harvesting the garden, and—this year (for the first time in our family)—hunting.

When my son turned 10, we gave him a gun, a Stoeger Airgun .177 Air Rifle. He shot beer cans and paper targets. Once, after Halloween, he shot the pumpkins after they’d done their dash as jack-o’lanterns. It became a weekly activity, through the winter and into spring, to compete with his siblings and us, to see whose aim was improving (his) and whose was not (mine).

Neither my husband or I had come from a hunting family. We both ate meat and had our experiences with raising and harvesting chickens and turkeys, but we’d never gone out and harvested wild game. It was something that interested us—the opportunity to be out in the environment, observing the world around us, increasing our food security by providing for ourselves and, most importantly, teaching our kids about the need to care for our planet and all the

creatures that live within it, by respecting and caring for the world around us. We saw hunting as a way of connecting with our place, sustaining ourselves and teaching our children. But we didn’t know where to start.

We decided that, despite falling outside the required age for taking the Hunter Education and Ethics Development (HEED) course, offered by Environment

First Hunt, And My Son’s First Grouse

Yukon, we should probably start there. Taught by Jim Walsh, the course looks at basic gun knowledge and safety, animal identification and the territorial rules and regulations around hunting various game animals, as well as the importance of hunting in an ethical way. Filled with stories of his own and friends’ experiences, Jim Walsh provided an entertaining and engaging evening. And despite the three-hour length, he kept our 11-year-old son entranced. We all managed to pass the final exam at the end. This course, combined with an online component, gave us the ability and confidence to go grouse hunting with our son’s air gun.

My husband and son began going out for walks each evening and morning, before school, with the gun.

They would wander quietly through the forest, listening for the quiet chuk-chuk of a grouse, stopping to orient themselves to it, every so often, and making sure there could be a safe shot taken from the angle of approach. Sometimes I would join with our other kids and the dog, and we

would all try to quietly listen and look for any signs of the stealthy “forest chickens” … only to have the dog bound into some nearby bushes and flush out a trio of birds that would all fly off in wide arcs to land on nearby spruce trees. We all really enjoyed this new way of walking, often off the normal trail, and really actively listening to the world around us.

It’s amazing how I’ve walked these trails for decades and have never seen the places I have since taking up hunting, or at least walking around with a gun.

One afternoon, after a couple of weeks of twice-daily “hunts,” we were on our way home, after following a grouse from tree to tree, through the forest, until it had lost us in a dense bog of black spruce. I admired the way my son carefully walked with his gun, managing the muzzle to ensure it was never pointed at anyone, or the dog, with the safety always on. He answered his younger siblings’ questions about the gun and had his eyes and ears on the forest around him

It was a really proud moment for me to witness his learning in

action, and his earnestness at learning a new skill. He was walking out front on the trail, while I hung back with his siblings, when he stopped and slowly backed up. He looked back and signalled for us to stop. He had seen something. We all quietly stopped on the trail and looked to see what he had seen. I took a couple of careful steps forward to find the grouse, and there it was, standing right at the junction of the trails—head up, feathers out, chuk-chuking to itself. I whispered to my son to be mindful of the hill behind the bird, and he dutifully crept through the bushes to take a safer shot. He carefully sat down, then laid on the ground and lined up his gun.

I watched him take a breath and then ease it out, and all of a sudden the bird was a ball of fluff and feathers on the ground. I quickly walked over and made sure it was dead (my son has taken that shot so many times and then watched as the bird flew off, startled by the noise). This was his first hit. His first success. His first kill. And I could see all of that “shifting” across his face—pride, happiness,

confusion, and sadness.

The kids and I gathered around the bird and gently put our hands on it. We said thank you to the forest—and to the animal, for giving its life, and we promised to treat it with respect. My husband was coming up the trail to us, and the kids all ran off excitedly to tell him about the grouse. On the way home, my son wanted to carry the bird and to help his dad clean it up and put it in the fridge. I pulled out some recipe books and we looked through them together, then settled on one of Miche Gen-

est’s recipes for cooking it.

At bedtime, our son was sad. He couldn’t stop thinking about the grouse and how he had killed it. So we talked about how that grouse had had a wonderful, happy life, right up until it died, and how we would be careful to use as much of the bird as we could, to be respectful of the life it had given us.

My husband asked if he still wanted to hunt. Our son thought for a bit and said, “Yeah … but maybe not tomorrow.” ■

TWO CHOIRS, ONE VISION

Celebrating northern music

When the Vancouver Chamber Choir takes the stage at the Whitehorse United Church on Saturday, Oct. 18, they will bring a program crafted to celebrate the North. The event is organized by Whitehorse Concerts. The Vancouver Chamber Choir will join forces with the Whitehorse Chamber Choir in three works, says Kari Turunen, artistic director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir.

The Vancouver Chamber Choir is Canada’s longest-running professional choir, founded in 1971. It was honoured with the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, by Chorus America, among other awards, and presented concerts all over the world. For Turunen, a native of Finland, coming to Whitehorse is something special.

“Our Yukon program was definitely constructed around a theme … the North. This means that most of the composers presented are from the northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including Canada and the Baltic countries. Many of the works also feature natural phenomena from the North such as snow, northern lights and even the cold that sets in during the fall,” explains Turunen.

It’s a program that resonates very well in communities where such visits are rare cultural events. “I often feel that the most meaningful concerts are the ones in places where the visit of a professional choir is the exception, not the rule,” he adds. “There is often a stronger connection to the audience and a stronger feeling of presence from the singers

as well.”

The connection runs even deeper: one of the featured composers, Carmen Braden, was born in Whitehorse and raised in Yellowknife. She is a lifelong northerner whose compositions capture the landscape and feeling of Canada’s Sub-Arctic. Her award-winning work has earned national recognition.

“And the fact that we join forces with the Whitehorse Chamber Choir, in three works, creates additional ties to the community,” he says. The focus on meaningful connections reflects what makes the Vancouver Chamber Choir unique among other ensembles. The choir has premiered nearly 400 works by Canadian composers. At just 16 core members, it is smaller than most choirs, but the size leaves room for flexibility.

When Turunen became artistic director in 2019, he made one objective change by bringing the number of core singers down to 16, but then allowing for the group to expand or contract, according to the music.

“This season, in addition to the

regular grouping of sixteen singers, we will perform as a choir of ten, twenty-four and thirty-two … or, actually, eighty if you count the volunteer singers!” But flexibility in size is just one feature. Other things that set the choir apart are that they have a continuous local presence through both the number of concerts in

Vancouver and the outreach programs. “Our programming profile tends to be a little broader than that of many peer organizations,” Turunen says.

This broad programming approach is evident in Turunen’s focus on contemporary music from the Nordic and Baltic countries, since becoming director. “I also be-

lieve that the music we sing is more diverse, both in style and as far as the creators of it are concerned. I am very determined to build bridges and cooperate, and I hope that brings about something of a change in how people see the choir nowadays.” Community is another part of the success of the choir: “I think we are quite happy together, and that is a huge achievement in itself.”

The concert is exactly the kind of meaningful connection Turunen values most: bringing music that celebrates the North to an audience that lives in this unique place every day.

The concert will take place Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Whitehorse United Church, promising an evening where northern themes, local connection and world-class performance come together in a musical celebration. Visit eventbrite.ca to purchase tickets. ■

• Developing a Rural Land Development Strategy

CHANGING HOPES INTO HOMES

The Yukon Party will tackle the housing crisis head-on to help ensure affordable, accessible homes for all by:

• Cutting Development Permit Timelines by 50% and Eliminating Their Cost

We recognize the housing affordability crisis is not limited to one type of housing and will ensure that supply and planning account for all types; from affordable and country residential to commercial and recreational.

BUILDING & BRIDGING

The Yukon Party will Plan for Growth in Whitehorse by:

• Building Homes in Whitehorse by Accessing More Land

• Creating Tools to Acquire Vacant Land or Abandoned Lots

• Creating Incentives to Demolish Derelict Buildings and Remediate

• Planning the Next Phases of Whistle Bend and Expanding Mountainview Drive

The Yukon Party will also respect the enormous contributions seniors have made to enriching our territory, working to ensure a sufficient stock of housing options are available to them. We will also ensure every community has sufficient staff housing to support health care workers, teachers, social workers and other essential staff. By providing stable housing, the professionals Yukon communities rely on can be attracted to live, work and put down roots in the territory.

The

HOMEMADE HAMBURGER HELPER

This recipe is really quick, adaptable and cheap (like borscht)

Ithink it would, in fact, be safe to say that this is cheaper than borscht!

When we were kids, Mum would sometimes do up the classic Hamburger Helper™ dinner dish. We didn’t mind it at all, although I’ll admit, it wasn’t necessarily our favourite. Of course, back then, as I remember, they didn’t have the myriad of flavours that they offer today.

I’d never even heard of “Struggle Meals” or “Poverty Menus” until CBC News ran a cover page story on them the other day. I was actually shocked—and quite disturbed by the whole concept.

According to their article, one in four Canadians are struggling with food-insecurity issues, and sales of Hamburger Helper™ are up 14.5 percent in the U.S., over the last year alone. The article went on to talk about processed foods and how they are not as nutritious as regular diets.

Being honest, I’d already prepared this meal and had written the recipe before I saw that article, and I felt compelled to rewrite it, just to put a few things into perspective.

I was really surprised to learn, after doing some digging, that things like Hamburger Helper and Mac and Cheese use highlyprocessed noodles and flavour packets. I’ve always made my Hamburger Helper and Mac and Cheese from scratch, using the least-processed noodles that I can find. It’s so much easier, way more nutritious and so much cheaper in the long run.

I recently received a vacuum sealer as a gift from a friend. I don’t know how I ever lived without one (100 percent recommend!). One of the first things I used it for was ground beef—on sale. I got a three-pound bulk pack for $12 and split that into six 1/2-pound portions—so, $2 each. You can add whatever you want for seasonings to this recipe: different cheeses, chili, vegetables, etc.

I made it very plain and it landed on our plates for less than $1 a plate and was ready in about 20 minutes, start to finish. We didn’t consider it a “Struggle Meal”; it was just good!

INGREDIENTS

• Ground beef (about 1/4 pound per person)

• Onion

• Garlic

• Elbow noodles

• Cooking oil

• Red wine

• Beef Bisto

• Flour

• Salt and pepper, to taste

METHOD

1. Start by filling a medium-large saucepan with water, add a little salt and oil and then set on a burner to boil.

2. Finely dice the garlic and onion. Put these, with a little oil, into a frying pan and turn on to medium heat. Add the ground beef, as the onions start to caramelize (to brown). Stir with a wooden spoon to prevent burning or sticking.

3. When the noodle water starts to boil rapidly, add about a half cup of elbow noodles per person, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

4. Whisk a smallish tablespoon of Beef Bisto and flour into about a cup of cold water. Add this and about a 1/2 cup of red wine to your beef mixture. Stir as it thickens. You don’t want it too thick, just to have enough texture to stick to the noodles. Add some ground sea salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste. Remove from heat once you reach your desired consistency.

5. When the noodles are done (I prefer al dente), drain with a colander.

6. Stir the beef mixture right into

the drained noodles, then plate immediately. Sprinkle a little paprika, as a garnish—or, if you were lucky enough to have had a great harvest this year, some fresh basil leaves are lovely. You can also sprinkle grated cheese, chili peppers or parmesan, if you like.

Chef’s Note: Leftovers will keep up to a week in the fridge and can be reheated in the microwave. A fresh dinner roll and a beer round out this “Struggle Meal” very nicely! ■

The head in Rebecca Fico’s watercolour is full of blue birds. Monica Velasquez’ Les Étoiles reminds me of an Art Nouveau book plate. In Emily Toth’s A fairy tale in the Yukon, the whole head is replaced by a book with animal tracks on the pages and with sheep, moose, salmon and a raven leaping from it.

Along the theme of animals, two grey whales or porpoises touch snouts in Carl Turcotte’s oval acrylic painting. Lillia Larson paints a butterfly, perhaps emerging from a chrysalis on a heartshaped wooden panel. Saralyn Hissink paints an emerald-eyed wolf into a snowy stroke of paint on a background of aurora borealis. Léah Crammond balances popart evoking abstract zigzags with a realistic painting of a moth. Molly Charbonneau’s abstract Ink blot, hanging nearby, also evokes the feeling of an insect.

Another abstract composition, A flame’s heart by Jana Lojang, uses expressive mark-making that evokes, for me, feelings I remember well from adolescence and still encounter today. Izzy Massery’s Earth and Sky abstracts the landscape in a low relief paper collage with cheerful shooting stars.

Chloé Cashaback St-Laurent takes us to a stream on a hiking trip in Europe with Randonée à Madeira. Cora renders the forest for us in blue calligraphy ink. Loreto Mateo Sotil paints us a warmcoloured wall with a door, window and vines.

Two landscapes with figures identify themselves as Ted Harrison studies. A winter morning, by Sadie Warren, includes brightly-coloured buildings with wavy edges, and a running child with a dog. The large brown rectangle of a building dominates Stephanie Nemeth’s Caribou Hotel, against a pink sky, with a more complex mood that reminds me of Jim Logan’s work.

I am grateful to Arts Underground for bringing to us these young voices and the humanities they share. Spend some time with them.

The galleries at Arts Underground are open from 10 a.m to 5

It is Naki Ama Nartey’s African Royal Attire that makes the first impression of the show. This sleeveless dress, with a long back skirt in African cotton, welcomes viewers and draws us in to the rest of the pieces, almost as a host would.

p.m. Tuesday to Friday and from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. Saturday. For the month of October, you can also see Mammoth Dreaming, by Joyce Majiski, in the two focus galleries; and the Yukon Prize Longlist artists show in the Hougen Heritage Gallery, until Nov. 30. ■

Visions Of The North Premieres In Whitehorse ...

a pretty good idea of how difficult it was and that it was definitely not going to be an easy route.”

Completing the gruelling shoots was far from the end of the work, though, and Geoffroy-Gagnon says he and Ulrich have been handling the editing, voice-overs and other post-production work since the shooting wrapped.

“I’ve been used to doing some shooting in the park and on the resort, but never really in the backcountry setting, so I had to take a bit more of a production kind of view of things and help my filmer set up and figure out what our vision was and go a bit more over what we wanted things to look like and take a different perspective rather than just be the skier,” Geoffroy-Gagnon explains. “That was definitely a huge learning opportunity.”

While the film largely focuses on Geoffroy-Gagnon’s decision to move on from competitive skiing and into a new life path, the experiences he had in his six years, representing Canada on a global scale, will always hold a special place for him.

“The last six years with the Canadian team, being able to travel the world and literally pursue the dream I had when I was a little kid, that’s been a huge highlight of mine and I definitely wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world,” he says. “I got to meet some amazing people and see some great places and really push my limits in the sport.

“All good things need to come to an end, eventually, and it just so happened that it worked out that way. With all that being said, those six years are going to be some of the best memories I’m going to have for a long time.”

To describe the atmosphere of his film in one word, Geoffroy-Gagnon chooses reflective

“Some of the stuff that it goes into is me coming back home and resetting, and the Yukon giving me the opportunity to do that throughout my life, being able to come back to the Yukon and reset and get away from the noise to think about what my next endeavour is going to be,” he says.

“So, I’d say it’s a pretty reflective mood but there are a lot of voiceovers of me thinking and talking about the whole experience. But there’s also some pretty epic skiing in there, and that’s obviously my background, so I got a lot of opportunities to showcase that in the film and it definitely makes for a pretty visual piece.”

Geoffroy-Gagnon and Ulrich

Catching some late-afternoon air

continuously made tweaks to the project throughout its post-production work, so much that Geoffroy-Gagnon felt he would see the completed version only when everyone else did.

“We’re obviously super happy

with what we’ve got, but there’s always more to be done until the timeline pops up,” he says.

The premiere event in Whitehorse took place in early October and featured screenings of some other short films by friends of

Geoffroy-Gagnon’s, in addition to his own film, plus speaking introductions and a Q&A by GeoffroyGagnon. Visions of the North was also shown at Montreal’s iF3 Festival, which screens primarily freeskiing- and snowboardingbased movies. Following these screenings, Geoffroy-Gagnon is travelling down to Whistler to present the film there, and has started working on ideas for his next visual piece. MAKE IT A HABIT

Having good visibility on snowy roads can make all the difference. You will be able to see things clearly and avoid accidents and injuries. Here are a few tips to sharpen your vision and ensure a safe drive at night. First, check your lights. It is important to check your headlights that includes fog lamps, driving lights and brake lights if they are working properly before heading out. It is also important to visit your local mechanics if your vehicle requires to adjust or change your headlight bulb or if it requires some cleaning in order to have a safe and enjoyable drive.

IWas that ever dumb!

have 33 exotic pines that I carefully grew from seed, nurtured and carefully identified as to species and variety, until they escaped from the living-room nursery and met the great outdoors.

I should have labelled them. I should have made a rudimentary map.

Some of them I’m pretty sure of: the Scots pine and the ponderosa pine, for example. The Scots pine because it’s the only twoneedle pine that I planted, and its bark differs from our native lodgepole pine. I think the seeds were a bonus gift included with seeds I actually ordered (waste not, want not).

The ponderosa because it’s a three-needle pine.

Wait a minute … What’s with the focus on the number of needles?

Well, they’re a distinguishing feature. Pluck the needles off yer pine. If they’re short and come off one at a time, you’re probably lookin’ at a spruce. If they’re long and come off in pairs, that’ll likely

be yer lodgepole pine. In threes or fives, they’re exotic to the Yukon. And along with bark and cones, a forester or nursery operator can

figure out the species. It’s a selfevident obviosity that I am neither. And I only have one tree out of the 33 that has a cone. I’m gonna send its picture to the UBC Botanical Garden Forums and see what they say.

Or if there’s a forester reading this, yer welcome to come out and give me yer best guess.

Wandering in the old plantation one day, I spied this wee cone high up in one tree. At first I thought it was a cone from one of the larches that I planted at about the same time as my pines. Aggressive buggers those larches. They grow about two feet a year and, unlike my

pines, they’re not shy about producing cones … or seed. I think they’re about to become a weed species in my forest. I digress. The cone turned out to be attached to the as-yet-unnamed pine. It’s real!

I should admit up front that I’ve forgotten almost everything I thought I learned in a year of forest technology, other than a lasting appreciation for pine trees. I managed to score a job, for a couple of years, with federal forestry, a lot of which was spent at the Kananaskis Forest Experiment

Station, with access to the high ridges of the eastern slopes of the Rockies.

That’s where I discovered the limber pine and the whitebark pine, the first five-needle pines I’d ever seen.

As far as I know, all the nut pines (as in the pine nuts you put in yer salad) are five-needle pines. Take it as a given that the cones are fairly big.

Anyhow, that’s why I grew ’em. Besides salads, pine nuts are really good in koftas.

As best as I can remember, I started with 12 different species, in about 2006, thinking it’d be great to corner the local market in pine nuts, or at least have my own source. Reality struck in about 2015 as we were walking along the driveway admiring the trees: “Jeez, I’ll be dead and gone by the time these things grow any cones.” Ten years later, a bunch of them have pollen cones and some even have what I assume might actually turn into seed cones, if I can pollinate them.

But I don’t know what they are anymore, dammit! ■
