PUB NIGHT AT THE GUILD HALL

The local theatre society is presenting The Weir until Nov. 15

The Weir, a play written by Conor McPherson, first premiered in London, England, in 1997. Taking place in a rural Irish pub, it centres around a stranger disrupting the usual goings-on of the barflies, upstaging their ghoststory-sharing session with a much darker, more real tale that unsettles the listeners. This fall, from Oct. 29 to Nov. 15, the Guild Hall will be presenting an all-local production of the play.

“The writing is truly incredible,” says Brian Fidler, the Guild Hall’s artistic director. “It’s just so well-crafted and the storytelling is just so on point.”

For Yukon audiences, in particular, Fidler thinks the play can feel familiar and relatable. “We are a small town, even though we have many amenities,” he says. “We’re a small place, and it’s really the

connection between us all that I think keeps us here, and that’s what this play is; it’s about the real connection between people, not an online, artificial connection, but when people gather in a room and really talk to each other.”

Taking place only on a single set over the course of an evening, with no scene changes, the play transports audiences to other times and places through only its dialogue, in the stories its characters tell.

“I think this play’s strength is the characters and how they are crafted,” Fidler says. “Consequently, we need to have really good actors in those roles, and really good direction, in order to keep an audience engaged with our current short-term attention spans. We have an excellent cast.”

Directed by Reid Vanier, the Guild Hall’s production of The Weir features Katie Payne, Jason Westover, Roy Neilson, Jody Woodland and James Cleary in the five character roles.

“There are no weak links,” says Fidler. “It’s a very strong, connected cast. I was up there over

the weekend, when they were doing their tech weekend where they layer in the lights and the sound with the acting, and that cast was just superconnected. They sing songs together as their warmup, and they’re playing games.

“They’ve got a dartboard … They’re fully embracing the pub aesthetic of the piece, and everyone is sort of going in and out of their Irish accents, all the time. At its core, it’s all about the acting and how those actors are connected with each other through the direction.”

Fidler says Vanier has been able to masterfully bring out the chemistry between the actors and has fostered the connection on which the play hinges, while also understanding the subtleties of the script.

“He’s an excellent director,” Fidler says of Vanier. “I just love his work.”

Tasked with creating the ambience of the play was lighting designer Martin Nishikawa. Fidler says the lighting work is instrumental in complementing the story and moving the plot forward.

“There is a series of monologues in the story that are just beautifully painted by the lights,” he says. “[Nishikawa] has just done a masterful job of moving those monologues forward and painting pictures up there.”

With a four-week rehearsal process for the actors to get comfortable with their roles and for the crew to prepare, the pieces are in place for the show’s nearly-threeweek runtime, and Fidler is excited to bring the performance to the stage. While the show focuses primarily on dialogue, without set and costume changes, its magic lies in its surprising complexity.

“As I mentioned, it’s masterful storytelling on so many levels,” says Fidler. “If you really enjoy good storytelling and excellent

acting and a well-crafted story, then this is the play for you. It’s very well done, and every aspect of the production is just wonderfully rendered.”

Though nothing comes to mind for Fidler as being insurmountable, as far as challenges putting together the production goes, there are always things that come up and it’s crucial to be adaptable.

“We’re always working with people’s schedules because we are a community theatre,” Fidler explains. “These are your friends and your neighbours up on the stage, and people have lives, jobs and families. We need to be flexible in how we put together our rehearsal schedule so people can fit this into their lives. I think that’s kind of the main obstacle that we encountered is just being mindful of people’s time and what they’re able to offer to the Guild.

“If I can say it, we give a lot back to people who perform in our shows. We really try to treat them with a lot of respect and be mindful of their time, and just give people an opportunity—just as they are giving us so much of their time and so much of their effort and their love, and just that they put into it—we have to match them and we have to do our best to match what they’re giving us.”

Fidler also gives props to set designers Rebecca Manias and Courtney Holmes for their transformation of the space into an old-time Irish pub that makes audiences feel as though they are other patrons listening in on the conversations of the characters.

“If you’ve been to a show at the Guild, you know how that space can change,” he says. “With each show, it’s like you’re walking into another world; and with this,

they’ve done that. It’s an Irish rural pub and it’s to the tee. It’s really, really charming.”

Because the show has no intermission, Fidler encourages attendees to show up early to have a drink before the performance, since the theatre’s bar will also be made over into a mock pub, complete with drinks from Yukon Brewing.

“People should come and soak up the atmosphere, get in the spirit, have a drink and enjoy the space,” he says. “The Guild is looking really good these days.”

IN THE NIGHT WATCHES

In the night watches I will watch over you; I will neither slumber, nor sleep.

I’ll take the first watch; you take the second, my friend.

And in the morning … oh, in the morning, still I will be watching—always waiting.

Even as the One who does not slumber nor sleep, I will watch over you; I will keep watch. Rest. Breathe. Know that you are loved.

You are seen in your innermost parts, just as you are; every hair on your head counted.

Loved as you are, deeply, in the ocean depth of your being, revealed.

How deep is this love that washes over me. How wide.

A love that crosses over, that spans heaven and Earth.

A love that reaches through the fog, that dispels the darkness, that casts down every fear.

A love that is truth. Light. That lifts you above these momentary light afflictions. Be still my soul.

Wait for love.

Drink deeply from the cup that satisfies every longing. That quenches every thirst.

Be still. Be still and know.

With every breath, with every step, in every moment—loved. Wait for it. Even as the One who has braved

the deepest ocean depths and the darkest night to bring it to you.

The One who keeps watch … who never sleeps.

Listen for his voice. It comes in a whisper, as the wind so gently moves through the trees, as they sway under its intangible presence. Listen. It is the voice of love … soft, sometimes thundering like the voice of rushing water … the voice that drowns out all other voices.

Deep. Calling out to deep. His voice. You are loved as you are, where you are. That is the voice you need to hear in the night watches.

“Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me” (Psalm 42:7, NIV).

LIFTING SPIRITS WITH CELTIC MUSIC

A “Barra” of fun is the best remedy

If the grey curtain of winter approaching brings with it a sense of melancholy, there’s a group rolling into Whitehorse offering an ancient but time-tested remedy.

“Things do get dark. We are losing the daylight and people are dealing with a lot,” says Stewart MacNeil. “This is a good show for people who want to lift their spirits.”

MacNeil is one of four siblings who make up the core of the noted Celtic band, the Barra MacNeils. The show he’s talking about is the first of the band’s annual Christmas tour; and he says performing it in mid-November does not diminish the audiences’ enthusiasm.

“I think it is probably because it is much more than a Christmas show. There are other pieces of Gaelic music, and there are favourites that people enjoy. And we do a lot of versions.”

He says bringing variety to the music and arrangements is the result of a family that prizes versatility.

“We are primarily an acoustic band. Everyone plays multiple instruments and we are all singers. We have a full spectrum of vocals, so we can put together a lot of different sounds just from that end. It keeps it fresh for us.”

Each of the siblings play at least four instruments. Bass player Jamie Gatti, the fifth member on this tour, is the exception but brings a musical palette rich in diverse styles gained through more than 30 years plucking the strings with many accomplished performers.

Cape Breton Island, the band’s name also pays homage to their roots across the sea. Barra is an island in Scotland, the ancestral home of Clan MacNeil.

Growing up on the windswept north side of Sydney Harbour may have sheltered the family from the shifting currents of music in the Celtic homeland, yet seems an unlikely locale to produce an internationally-acclaimed musical ensemble.

Sydney Mines was once known for the copper it produced, but the last mine closed in 1975. It is now known primarily for its cold, windy, wet, snowy and very stormy winters. And the Barra MacNeils.

The group has won multiple awards and critical acclaim as a leading concert act. The Barra MacNeils have toured across North America, the Caribbean, Ireland, Scotland and elsewhere. They have released 17 recordings, pro-

This band is not deterred by cold or by grey skies

The array of talents and instruments (which include mandolin, violin, bodhran, Celtic harp, tin whistle and flute, to name a few) allows the musicians to bring a high level of creativity to their craft, but the sound remains true to their Celtic roots.

“The traditional music of Cape Breton goes back a few hundred years. There was a period when people said the music on the island was more authentic than what was being played in Scotland,” MacNeil said.

It is not only the music that draws on the family’s heritage; their performances blend in dancing, storytelling and Gaelic songs, to create an immersive cultural experience.

Although the family hails from

duced television specials and are regular headliners at festivals.

“We’re very fortunate to do what we do. Next year we’ll be celebrating forty years, and as we get older, we get better at working together,” MacNeil says.

A good thing, because the group faces a rigorous schedule over the next six weeks. From the launch in Whitehorse, Nov. 12 and 13 at the Yukon Arts Centre, the cross-country tour rolls through more than 30 venues, finishing in Nova Scotia three days before Christmas.

“It’s our biggest tour this year, and everybody’s taking their vitamins now.”

Which are, of course, another ancient but time-tested way to ward off winter’s chill, but not as much fun as going to the show. ■

FABRIC OF JOY WHERE WE LIVE

Gabrielle Dupont is an adventurous spirit who loves to travel across the territory to discover hidden treasure.

It’s the little things in life …

Many years ago, I was introduced to handkerchiefs by a good friend of mine. For me, a child of the 90s, they were a relic of the past along with corduroy pants and the wool berets of “old-fashioned people” (that is, people over 75). Point in case, my friend (the handkerchief fan) was a WW II kid who was eager to preach their usefulness. Instead of using commercial paper tissue that destroys the planet (and your wallet), “you blow your nose and then put it back in your sleeve,” he said, demonstrating, with the red cotton piece hanging off of his wrist.

Despite my strong convictions to do the right thing for the environment, I remained skeptical of handkerchiefs, thinking they were things out of Charles Dickens’ stories—until about a decade ago when a toilet-paper drama morphed into a lesson in humility.

A group of paddler friends and myself were at the Bettles Ranger Station and Visitor Center in the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, in Alaska, about to embark on a month-long canoe trip. We were summoned to a backcountry orientation session (all of us experienced trippers). The park ranger, assisted by educational slides, lectured us about the animals and plants we would surely encounter during our trip—

bears, birds and bull moose.

The dutiful young woman “pushed it” with one slide, illustrating the correct way to poop in the park: you must fully squat and bury the offending material. She then handed us various promotional knick–knacks. At that point, she was severely testing every-

up my nose at.

On the very first day of the trip, I came down with a benign cold that turned my nostrils into Niagara Falls. With a foggy brain, I went for my toilet-paper stash, having nothing else to blow my nose into. After a few days of this arrangement, my toilet-paper

one person, once a week, who, in turn, would relay our news to our contact person. For me, this was my dad.

So when it came to our weekly call, I joked with our call person— a friend’s wife—about asking my dad for a toilet-paper airdrop. The message was relayed. A few

one’s patience. I grabbed one of the knick-knacks (a sticker of some sort) and left the building. It’s only while we were all walking away from the visitor centre that I noticed others with their new orange hankies. This was one of the knick-knacks I had turned

stash was not only depleted, but it would also not last the entire trip (uh-oh!). Because the trip was long (four weeks) and remarkably remote, we had a satellite phone with us, to stay in touch with loved ones. We had set-up a system where we would phone

closer, the pilot got out on the plane pontoon, struck a pose and waited for us.

“My dad sent toilet paper,“ I whispered to myself, speculating and flabbergasted at the possibility of it all.

The author’s handkerchief drying over the towel bar in Mexico

days later, on the river, a float plane approached our group, circling above us at a low altitude for several minutes. Eventually, the pilot landed the plane about 200 metres from us, on the river.

“Someone died,” muttered my paddling partner. As we paddled

“Are you the overdue group?” asked the pilot, now within earshot. No we weren’t, and nobody was dead. Nor was this a toiletpaper delivery. Although we were concerned people might be missing on the river, the pilot was optimistic that he would spot them later. Before he departed, a friend asked (to spare me the embarrassment) if he had toilet paper in his plane. “Oh yeah, I sure do,” he said as he pulled out two full rolls.

At that moment, I realized two things: you can rely on bush pilots for toilet paper, and a certain orange handkerchief would have prevented this pickle.

From that trip onward, I never travelled without a handkerchief. In the wilderness of the Yukon, they clean my face and remove sunscreen from my skin. In hot climates, they get soaked in cold water and cool down my head. Even on a recent trip to Montreal, having caught the “flight flu,” my handkerchief saved me from carrying two metric tonnes of paper tissue in my carry-on.

There is no International “Day of the Handkerchief” and, after all the good they provide, perhaps it’s about time we change that. ■

ARTREPRENEUR

LICENSING PAINTINGS INTO PEOPLE’S LIVES

Anto brings artwork into our daily routines

When I walked into Anto, in their new location on Main Street, I was delighted to see Meghan Hildebrand’s paintings. Kym Rempel, owner of Anto, said they were also on display in her previous location but that this new space allows people to enjoy them better.

Rempel first saw Hildebrand’s paintings at an exhibition entitled That Crackle, at the Rah Rah Gallery on Sixth Avenue in Whitehorse, in 2013. Rempel fell in love with all the paintings, then and there. She loved the way Hildebrand evoked the landscape with unexpected colours, including fluorescents.

Then in 2018, Rempel was rebranding her soap and asked Hildebrand if she could use her paintings in the new designs. They also agreed to exhibit Hildebrand’s paintings in the shop, where they sell at a better commission rate

for Hildebrand than in other galleries.

Hildebrand sent up four paintings from the original exhibition. Rempel bought one of the paintings herself at that time, ruefully wishing she had bought it earlier when it was less expensive.

With her newly-designed products, Rempel quit her government job and opened Whoa Bear (in a hut on the Carcross Commons), operating there for years before moving to Whitehorse.

Hildebrand recalls first hearing from Rempel in 2018. “Being a Yukoner, a craft-soap fiend and a scent-o-holic, I was into it!” While Hildebrand doesn’t take on many graphic jobs, she is interested in licensing her existing work, she says, “if it’s for a product or service I feel aligned with.”

Hildebrand’s mother was Dereen Hildebrand, who, along with Steve Slade, founded Arts in the Park in 1996. Growing up in the Yukon arts scene, Hildebrand never doubted she could make it as an artist, and while there have been challenging times, she’s kept the faith. She now makes

her home and has her studio on the Sunshine Coast in B.C. You can visit meghanhildebrand.com to see her work.

Hildebrand offered Rempel a flat rate for each piece of artwork she wanted to licence. They have a simple contract that the art is only to be used for the stated purpose and that any other use will require an additional agreement. Hildebrand often requests soap as payment. “Her soaps make the perfect gifts, especially for my friends who are into my work.”

I, myself, remember winning a door prize at a national arts-education conference, in Ottawa, and being delighted to see Rempel’s soap in the bag, adorned with the immediately-recognizable colours and textures of Hildebrand’s paintings.

After some time working together, Hildebrand agreed to paint a few custom pieces for Rempel’s soap and bath products. As with the other licenses, Hildebrand keeps the original, and Rempel buys the printing rights for a specific purpose. In this case, there was also a fee charged

Finders Keepers acrylic on canvas at Ian Tan Art Gallery, in Vancouver

for the creation of the new work.
Hildebrand trusts Rempel’s design decisions about how to use her paintings in the soap packaging, and she loves the results.
Rempel’s soaps have names like Carcross Desert, Yukon River, Rocky Mountains, and so on.

Column with Nicole Bauberger
Nicole Bauberger is a multi-disciplinary visual artist, as well as a writer and performer, living in Whitehorse. She has contributed to What’s Up Yukon since our first issue on Feb. 9, 2005.

Rempel reflects that both she and Hildebrand represent landscape through abstract means; Rempel, through scent-memories of specific places; and Hildebrand, through colour, texture, pattern and repetition—the tools of an abstract artist.

Hildebrand resonated with that idea. “My work is an exploration of the places I love and experience and remember, through the lens of abstract painting. Almost everything I create becomes some version of a landscape. I really like her idea of adding smell and touch to recreate the experience of place. Kym’s soaps, inside their

wrappers, are a joy to behold. Satisfying shapes, colours, textures, scents … a complete and artful offering.”

Hildebrand has also known Meg Kinney, a New-York–based clothing designer, for years. Kinney saw Hildebrand’s work in a magazine and reached out. Hildebrand had coveted and collected Kinney’s pieces for 10 years when Kinney asked if she would like to collaborate.

Like Anto, Kinney’s brand has values that Hildebrand aligns with: “sustainability, ethical production, and beautiful products.”

Hildebrand says that she finds

the pieces Kinney created from her paintings to be “original, in that the prints are so large that the placement of the print totally changes the look of each piece.” She notes that these pieces are “beautifully-made garments that, like art, a person can enjoy for many years.” For Hildebrand, herself, she finds that wearing her own work in public becomes a “conversation starter.”

“You can style it differently and transform its purpose. It lets the wearer take part in the artistic expression.”

Last spring, Hildebrand attended the launch of this cloth-

ing line in New York City. Kinney has a store in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. She got to spend the day at the store in Brooklyn, as she says, “trying on all the clothes.” She and her husband packed their five days in New York full with exhibitions and museums, soaking up inspiration.

Over the past 12 months, Hildebrand attended the Venice Biennale and exhibited in Portland, Oregon. She has just completed a community mural. Now, she says “It’s time “to dream and consider the work” that she wants to do. She feels a shift coming and knows it will take

“rest and focus” to get there. She has a solo exhibit planned for the fall of 2026 at Mayberry Fine Art, in Winnipeg.

Anto, pronounced on-toe (antoyukon.com), moved to Main Street this year to find a larger space to hold more people and more products. Rempel enjoyed the challenge of designing the new space. For her, this is a kind of artwork, creating a space as unique and as beautiful as the products inside it.

Anto offers products made by a diverse range of artists, some local to the Yukon, and some from across Canada or from other countries. Rempel focuses on small businesses. She knows the artists and she hand-picks all of the works she carries. She wants to support people who are making things with artistic design, thoughtfulness and beauty.

Rempel sees her artform as making ways for people to bring beauty and art into their everyday routines. This could as easily be a beautiful coffee mug that makes you stop in the morning and enjoy it. It can include beautiful things in your bathroom or clothing, but also wall art.

“This is the philosophy I live by. This is what I love. Making my everyday routine full of things that bring me joy.”

Anto, located at 106 Main Street, is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. ■

CLASSIC REUBEN SANDWICH

ISo tasty, so quick, so sauerkraut-y

hate sauerkraut! There

Thousand Island

I said it and I’ll say it again. I hate sauerkraut! However, a friend of ours recently gifted us some local Sweet Cabbage Kraut from Nomadic Harvests in Mount Lorne, and it was incredibly good. They used cabbage, apple and onion in the fermenting process. It’s called La Bavaroise. Pick some up, so good. Let’s go back to my disdain for sauerkraut. I mean, it’s sour. It’s cabbage fermented by lactic-acid bacteria (Doesn’t that just sound gross?). It’s basically cabbage, salt and brine. When I eat something, it should taste nice, not sour. That being said, many, many people do love the traditional German food. You can have it! More prime rib steak for me!

Obviously, I never once ordered a reuben in my entire life. Once I started cooking professionally, it was a staple on most lunch menus and very quick and easy to make. Chefs love quick and easy. On the grill, off the grill, onto a plate—load up some fries or salad, ring the bell—next!

Rye Bread

Spread Thousand Island dressing on two pieces of rye bread. Add a hefty layer of swiss cheese to one of them. Cover the cheese with a layer of sauerkraut.

Top this with a good amount of corned beef. At this point, you may want to add another layer of swiss cheese. Totally

tended a weekly poker game at a local hotel, every week for 15 years, and ordered a corned beef and sauerkraut sandwich every single time he attended. We may never know.

One particularly interesting story comes from Omaha. Rumour

There are many stories regarding the origin of the reuben in those stories are that the sandwich was invented less than 100 years ago and originated in the U.S. Either in New York or Nebraska. Omaha, Nebraska, declared March 14 to be Reuben Sandwich Day, so perhaps there is a little more to the Nebraska story.

The Yukon Hospital Foundation raises funds to enhance the quality of healthcare for all Yukoners. Every dollar you give is used to support the area of greatest need. Your hospital needs your support. There is a great need for advanced equipment, including critical diagnostic imaging, surgical and other specialized tools. Give our doctors, nurses and sta the necessary equipment to provide the care you need.

For more information visit: yhf.ca

What we do know is that the recipe hasn’t changed much and a lot of people really do love them. A simple mix of sauer-

swiss cheese and thousand island dressing, grilled on rye bread and served warm.

Let’s have a look at how to make one for yourself or your friends.

INGREDIENTS

❑ Sauerkraut

❑ Corned beef

❑ Swiss cheese

6. Put the other piece of bread, dressing side down, on top and butter the top of the sandwich. 7. Put the sandwich, butter side down, into a hot frying pan or griddle and butter the other side (now the top).

Flip the sandwich as it starts to brown, and keep grilling until your cheese is nice and gooeymelted.

Serve this hot, right out of the pan. Cut it in half and plate with a side of fries, potato chips, soup or even a couple of pickles. Most people will love you for it and devour the sandwich. I think I’ll stick to serving them and have a BLT for myself. Enjoy! ■

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BATTERY

Batteries store energy that is needed to start your vehicle, there are a few things to remember about batteries. Regular maintenance #1 is making sure the battery is secured properly so it doesn’t vibrate, keeping connections clean and tight at the terminal, with loose connections you may run into problems like vehicles won’t start, alternator not charging properly and could cause battery and alternator failure. Making sure your battery is ready for the colder weather we see in the Yukon like adding a battery pad or battery blanket to keep it warm when the vehicle is not in use; by keeping the battery warm in colder weather you will get the most power out of the battery on start up. Here is a side tip: if you don’t drive your vehicle on a regular basis and are experiencing battery problems, you could ask you local mechanic to install a low amp battery maintainer; this will keep your battery fully charged even when the vehicle is parked for a long time.

Mike Linder is a writer whose heart remains in the Yukon, while his feet continually carry him to places unknown.

CORY WEEDS QUARTET BRINGING THE JUJU OF JAZZ

Cannot explain the magic of music

After spending his entire adult life immersed in jazz and the music scene, Cory Weeds is still fascinated by the mysterious alchemy that creates a memorable performance. “The funny thing about music, I often wonder, why is this working? Or what changed from the last time?”

Weeds admits he does not have the answers; in fact, sometimes he doesn’t even know if his mojo is working. “This one time, I was so jet-lagged … just dead on my feet. I was on the verge of selling all of my equipment when I got off stage. Then these people came up and said “Wow! We’ve never heard you sound that good.”

Despite not fully understanding the magic, Weeds does not let fear of the unknown hold him back. He has been described as the hardestworking man in jazz, and it would be hard to argue against it: his resume looks like it should belong to three people.

We’ll be bringing that music, and some original music and some greasy, down-home-again stuff. People are going to have fun.”

ognized early on.

He founded and ran a jazz club in Vancouver, for 13 years; has been the leader on more than 20 albums, while working as a sideman on many others; and has also been the producer on more than 250 recordings. Weeds also established and runs his own record label, which won a Grammy, in 2023, in Best Large Ensemble Jazz category. He has a piece of a Juno award, teaches, serves on boards, promotes festivals and spreads awareness of jazz throughout British Columbia and beyond.

“I love the music; I love the people that make the music,” he says. “Energywise, some people have a gift of being able to study music ten hours a day. My gift is

He does indeed do a lot of things, all the while working on his craft as a musician. One critic has tagged him as an “expressive saxophonist,” a label which seems to make Weeds a little uncomfortable. “I’m a self-deprecating guy,” he said. “I’m rooted in the tradition of hard bop, and I gravitate toward the more soulful, more lyrical side.

After the Yukon gig, the band is heading into the studio to record an album tentatively titled “Boop, Bop, Bing, Bash!”

“The music I like to play comes from a place of joy, happiness, and soul.”

And that is the vibe the Saxophonist Cory Weeds Quartet will be bringing to the Yukon Arts Centre on Nov. 16, as part of the Jazz on the Wing concert series. The hard-bop style is ideally suited for the kind of exuberant and upbeat performance the quartet is aiming for. The subgenre is an extension of bebop (drawing on R&B, gospel and the blues), to create a sound that is funky and somewhat rambunctious, leaning heavily on the saxophone and piano.

“I was never going to let this business make me bitter,” he said. “I love music too much. It is disheartening, but you have a choice. You can spend all your time getting upset with how the streaming companies are screwing us, or you can use what’s available to us to stay above the line.

“I can’t remember who said it, but if you take care of the music, the music will take care of you.”

Weeds, however, does not depend solely on music to ward off bad juju. He takes care of his body and his soul.

“As I get older, I am very much concentrating on communicating with people, making sure they have a good time. I am not up there trying to prove anything; I leave it up to the people to say if we are good or bad … It is not for me to make that decision.”

“I try not to care, because that’s when you get into your head.”

Being breezy and laid back, however, does not seem to come naturally to Weeds. His pre-game ritual sounds anything but carefree. “You have to put care into every aspect. I make sure I warm-up properly. Did the sound check go okay? Am I playing music that speaks to me?”

Which brings us back to the mystery of making magnificent music that brings merriment to the masses, which, unfortunately, remains as elusive as an eel in an estuary. “Sometimes you can do all of those things, and nothing works.”

MY BABY ‘LOVES A BUNCH OF AUTHORS’

Reading into elderhood

Iam a self-professed reading addict. I usually have two books (at least) on the go at once—one to read during the daytime when I am feeling alert and in a mood to learn something new, and one for bedtime when I want to relax and be entertained. Also, I read news apps in bed, with my morning tea, and I rarely leave the house without something to read tucked into my bag.

This addiction began in childhood (or perhaps in the womb as my mother was a reader as well). As a child, on Saturday afternoons I liked to lie on the couch with a crisp apple (Southern Ontario in the autumn) and a new Nancy Drew novel. That was my idea of a great way to spend time. My parents took me to the library regularly, and I always came home with a pile of books. I have been told that my grandfather read books to me, and I still have one of the ones we liked.

As an adult, I discovered that one could request books at the local library and be put on a waiting list if the desired ones were not instantly available. Then every three weeks, at my regular library visit, I would have a “surprise” pile of books waiting for me. Sometimes one or none, or sometimes a big stack.

Scanning a book into the computer

a book or to download it from the local library. The newest e-readers are also waterproof (for reading in the bath), Bluetooth-enabled for audiobooks, and available with colour screens.

Audiobooks are a more recent addition to my reading life. This started with cassettes or CDs of books for long car journeys and has continued with phone downloads from the library. Those 3,200-kilometre car trips south fly by when I’m listening to a good thriller. I also find audiobooks enjoyable when doing some routine household tasks or working on a knitting project.

I recently learned that even someone who has become blind is able to continue reading. (Of course, Braille has long been an option, but I think this is difficult for a person with onset of blindness later in life.) An avid reader friend, who became completely blind in his mid 70s, has a scanner he sets up over an open book, and the scanner inputs the content into his computer via Bluetooth. Then his computer “reads” it aloud to him. The model he has can scan a 300-page book in about

one hour.

Reading aloud was a part of life when my children were young. The hours spent sharing a good story were a wonderful bonding experience, remembered fondly by both parents and children. Now I am reading to my granddaughters. Even as the oldest is now able to read for herself, she wants me to read to her. I love sharing some of the stories that I read to her father, and even the ones that I enjoyed as a kid.

I have been asked if I can remember all of the books I read. I can’t. I can’t remember all the details, but both good fiction as well as non-fiction contain many universal life lessons or interesting information and insights into the lives of others. As I feel the need to do more armchair travel, rather than the burning-fossil-fuel sort of travel, it is a way to visit exotic places without getting on an airplane. I firmly believe that lessons and ideas learned in reading are absorbed and incorporated into who I am and what I believe. No time reading is wasted! ■

I joined a book club about 30 years ago, while living in Winnipeg. Then when I moved to Whitehorse, 13 years ago, a book club was one of the first activities I sought out. These regular gatherings remain one of the highlights of my month. Book club has led me to read all sorts of books that I may never have chosen by myself and has broadened my reading experience.

The next big event in my reading life came in the form of an e-reader. With that innovation, going on a trip does not involve a heavy suitcase full of books, but instead a slim, light device able to store more books that I could ever read on any holiday.

My current e-reader has close to 500 books stored on it. It has a lighted screen so is easy to read in dim light or at night when my partner is trying to sleep. As my eyesight begins to change/deteriorate with age, I can enlarge the size of the letters to accommodate this change. With the ereader, I can choose to purchase
