LANCE FULLER (Eulogy as read by Ivan Coyote) Although I haven’t known Lance for a long time he and my dad Don have been good friends for many years and have been through a lot together. They became friends soon after my dad arrived in Atlin, when Lance came to help install the electrical service at my dad’s place, they worked and then had a smoke and started talking and never stopped. They both love boats, and fishing, and dogs, and things that burn gas and leak oil. Lance on kayaking: “If I can’t hear a motor it’s just not right.”

Over the years Lance became my dad’s best friend in Atlin, and Linda tells me that Lance considered my dad to be one of h is best friends as well. They both talked to each other about stuff they didn’t share with others.

Lance was born September 1st, 1948 in Invermere, BC at the historic Pine Logs hospital on Dorothy Lake.

His parents, Art and Greta met in Scotland during World War II. Art was a Canadian soldier and Greta worked for the British Land Army. Greta became a war bride in 1944. They remained in Scotland for a while, then after the war Art returned to Invermere where he was from. Lance’s older sister Lavinia (Lee) was born in Scotland and Lance was borne 2 years later in Invermere as the family had relocated there.

In the early years the young family lived with their Great Uncle Jack Walker on his homestead. It was quite a change for Lance’s mom Greta, who didn’t know how to cook. She had to deal with a woodstove and an outhouse. She tried making bread once and she was concerned when it kept rising so she buried it in the garden and didn’t tell anyone, but soon the turkeys were walking around with bread dough hanging off their beaks.

Lance grew up hunting and fishing and gained his love of the outdoors since his earliest childhood. They would take the short holidays to Calgary or Banff. The main activities that Lance and Lee had as children revolved around family, camping, hunting, fishing, playing cards, having game nights. Uncle Joe won the first TV in Invermere so they would go there and watch TV. The family ties were strong.

Sister Lee, who was 2 years older than Lance used to beat him up regularly, until suddenly at about 13 years old he got tall and she had to stop.

When Lance was 14, his dad died suddenly. They were very close and it was a difficult time for the family and especially for Lance who always considered his dad as his best friend.

The loss of his dad turned Lance into a bit of a rebel with some drinking and fighting. His mom and his sister tried to steer him the right away, and although he was hurting, good values were instilled. One time, in his early teens, he had done something bad and his mom got a willow stick and tried to use it to reprimand him. He ran outside and she chased him around the yard for a while … then they started laughing so hard they had to both just lay down on the grass and the dog stole the stick. That memory stuck with him.

While Lance was 20, his then girlfriend in Invermere got pregnant and they had a son. They were young and wanted to do the right thing and get married but her parents moved her away from town and the son was put up for adoption. Lance never found out the whereabouts of his old girlfriend or their adopted son until only a few years ago when they made contact. Colin, the son, had a happy upbringing with a loving family on Vancouver Island and he and Lance have now met a few times. In height and colouring, Colin is the very image of Lance.

When Lance reached his early 20s, he was starting to turn his life around. Working hard and trying to stay out of trouble. He married his local Invermere sweetheart Leah Verge in 1971 and they lived in a rough cabin in the bush outside of town, with their horses.

He felt that in order to get his life entirely on track it would be best for him to make a new start elsewhere. This was made clear to him when the police came to his place asking after his whereabouts the previous evening as some petty crime had been committed. It appeared that the culprit had a 56 chevy similar to Lance’s so they just assumed it was him. His mom had the car at her workplace that day to advertise it for sale. But the police still thought it was him. He finally got the local police officer to believe him and they realized that he was being pretty good and that they often harassed him unnecessarily (but remember this is according to Lance). He was feeling good about that but figured the following year when a new cop would come to town he’d read up on Lance’s file and it would all start over again.

He met Dickie and Eddie Feldman who were working in Invermere but were originally from Atlin and decided to check it out there. He and Eddie and Leah drove up to Atlin in mid-winter in Eddie’s convertible, with it hitting about minus 60 degrees in Watson Lake – Lance and Eddie in the front drinking to keep warm and Leah in the backseat under a huge pile of blankets. They returned to Invermere and drove back up in Lance’s 48 Chevy one ton flatbed loaded with all their stuff in January 1972 at 40 below, along with Eddie and Dickie following in their car. They had jug of homebrew on the seat and shared that along the road.

They moved into the old trapline cabin up McDonald Lake Road (the cabin that now belongs to Johnny Reed). Several people from Invermere had come to Atlin as well, Eddie and Dickie Feldman who were working there, Orin and Odell Anderson, Dave and Carol Goodwin,

Shirley Connelly, to name a few. This town seemed to draw them here. Lance always told everyone that he moved to Atlin because it was the last one man RCMP detachment in the province.

After a year or so in the trapline cabin, Lance purchased the old homestead at McKee Creek, along with a couple of placer claims. He and his wife Leah were settling in to the community of Atlin, enjoying the various winter and summer activities.

While they lived at McKee Creek, they had their two boys. Shane born in 1973 and Clayton in 1977. Lance spent time teaching the boys to hunt and fish, drive motorcycles, skidoos, trucks. A lot of his teaching was to tell them what to do or not and then when they got in trouble figure it out for themselves. Such as “don’t ride your motorbikes across the tailings pond up at the mine” – so Clay sets out across the pond and gets stuck, Shane goes to help and he gets stuck, followed by Alfred and Reg… Lance let them dig and drag themselves and their bikes out of the mud – took them all day – but they didn’t go there again.

In his early days in Atlin Lance liked to work hard and party hard, seemed like everyone did in those days. He really liked his rum!

Sometimes it was a bit of a challenge when he lived out at McKee Creek and spent an evening in the bar at the Atlin Inn or at a curling bonspiel and had to get home. He walked the 12 miles many times – although it would be more than 12 miles with his meandering in and out of the ditch. One cold winter night he drove and made it half way and ended up with his truck in the ditch and had to walk the rest of the way, shirt unbuttoned, riding boots on. In the morning he walked back to get his truck out of the ditch and realized his skidoo was in the back of the truck and he could have taken it instead of walking.

From the time he was a teenager, Lance always had a strong work ethic. Perhaps even a bit of a workaholic. In Atlin he was always busy – guide outfitting with Goodwins on the Haines Road for several years and working heavy equipment for the miners during the non-hunting season. He also had a trapline for a while, cut firewood and sold it, did janitorial work, and was an avid wolf hunter to supplement his income. He always got his moose for the winter and kept the wolves away from town. He really loved the hunting area along the Haines Road, the ruggedness, the pack-trains in and out of the remote camps, the wildlife. Many of his fondest memories are from the hunting area.

Lance and his young family decided to move into town and he built a log house on 4th Ave in 1980. Shortly after moving to town, Lance and Leah got divorced and she moved to Prince George to go back to school and complete a legal stenographer course, graduating top in her class. The 2 boys moved to Prince George with her. Clay being quite young at the time was happy being with his mom, but Shane did not want to leave Atlin and wanted to stay with his dad. Lance was adamant that the 2 boys not be split up, so Shane went too and stayed with his mom till he graduated high school, when he returned to Atlin for good. Although the boys left Atlin when they were fairly young children, they returned to stay with their dad for the summers and other holidays and Atlin remained their home.

In the early 1980s Lance became highways foreman in Atlin. He was conscientious about keeping the roads clear and doing extra things around town, not always to the agreement of his employer. But he felt that doing a little bit extra was the right thing to do.

He left highways after a few years and started his own company, North West Contracting, initially getting a couple of old 1958 and 1960 D7 Cats which he loved. He would do any kind of work that people wanted and as times got busier he also acquired his gravel truck, loaders, tractor and lowbed, excavators, crane, bobcat, rock trucks, etc. He bought the old Atlin Trucking shop and carwash out at the airport and was proud of his company and he especially like his signs which had pictures of wolves on them.

Lance was a bit of a lady’s man. He had a couple of long time girlfriends and other lady friends, all of whom he remained in touch with over the years. He also had a network of town ladies who he could coerce with sweet talk into doing baking for him. Telling them how much he loved their buns!

Both of Lance’s sons married. Clayton had 2 boys – Lance’s much cherished grandsons Caius and Lucas. Caius is the image of Lance when he was younger and also inherited his bush skills. Lucas, the younger, stayed with his grandpa earlier this summer and went camping, fishing, ATVing and although only 12 years old – was taught by grandpa to drive a standard transmission truck.

13 years ago, Lance and Linda got together and never looked back. It was a strong relationship from the start and was only growing stronger as time went on. For a while, they travelled back and forth between Atlin and Kamloops, where Linda’s home was, then moved full time to their place on Warm Bay Road. In the winters, they would travel off and on and in the summers enjoyed the lake with their houseboat, kayaks and fishing boats. In the evenings, sitting watching the sunset over the lake from the hot-tub on the deck, Lance would say this is the life; this is what we worked hard for all of our lives.

When Lance’s mom Greta passed away a few years back, she had made arrangements to be buried with her husband Art back in Invermere.

Lance was always reluctant to return to Invermere and face up to his past there but had to go for his mom. While there he reconnected with his Aunt, Uncle, Cousins and old buddies and much to his surprise, they liked him and missed him and were very happy to see him back in Invermere. He has travelled back there several times since then, and today we are pleased to see that several of them are here to pay their respects and say goodbye.

Lance hardly recognized his old hometown as it has grown into a mountain and lake playground for people from Alberta, one can hardly park downtown. The first time there, Lance and Linda saw the historic Toby Theatre where Lance often went as a child. It was pretty much unchanged. So they bought tickets, and popcorn and realized they were the only ones in the old theatre … told the owner not to bother showing the animated feature that they didn’t really want to see but he insisted because Lance had come. The theatre closed down shortly after.

Over the past few years, Lance slowed down in his work and became somewhat retired. Sold most of his equipment and bought a few more toys. He always was up early to be one of the first people at the coffee shop’s “table of knowledge” where the old guys meet over coffee every morning to solve the problems of the town and the world. He always said he had to go there to catch up on the gossip and find out what people think he’s doing each day. I wonder who’s sitting in his chair now?

With less work, Lance and Linda had time to travel the world visiting numerous places in Europe, Africa, Central America and New Zealand.

Catching up with old relatives in Scotland and Ireland specifically stood out. Camping in the wilds of Africa was also a dream come true.

Instead of only seeing these large animals on Knowledge Network or National Geographic (of which he was an avid fan) seeing them in person and up close was special.

Although he pictured himself as a rough, tough, and often surly guy – most people saw through that to his softer side. He really had a big heart. He was a bit of an enigma – liking flowers and small birds, rum, fishing, wolves, music, the queen, buns.

His death on July 28th, caught us all by surprise. It seemed Lance was indestructible, although it turned out he was not. He had a number of physical incidents that would have done in a normal guy. One afternoon he was skidooing way down the lake, the ice wasn’t good and he knew it wasn’t but he went anyway cause that’s the kind of guy he was. There could have been wolves down there. He and his skidoo went through the ice, he got out, wet – but his skidoo didn’t. He considered going to shore and building a fire and getting dried out but was worried that his son Shane would come looking for him on this poor ice and would fall through as well. So, he walked … 17 kilometres down the lake back to Atlin. His feet froze. He just made it in time as Shane and a buddy were just heading out to look for him when he returned.

His feet went black, the doctor said he’d lose his toes. But he sat in his bathtub, drinking rum for days or weeks and his feet healed enough to get around. And while he was healing, guys in town went without asking and retrieved his skidoo from the lake – it’s just like that in Atlin.

Then he got hit head on by a truck and trailer on the Alaska highway, in the winter at 35 below. His feet were crushed, his long legs were trapped under his seat, the emergency brake pedal was stuck in his thigh and had to be cut out of his truck and later removed at the hospital. His crushed feet got frozen again. They did what they could, kept him in the hospital as long as he would stay, and told him he would not walk again. He said he had things to do still and proved them wrong. At least now his poor feet aren’t hurting anymore.

In 2011, Lance was diagnosed with lung cancer. Fortunately it was an early diagnosis and the tumour and part of his lung was removed and he remained cancer-free after that.

In the last three years, Lance was in and out of the hospital several times with heart and lung issues and was taking medications which helped. He was feeling pretty good this year and said he would at least get in one more good summer. He only made it half way.

The weekend that he passed, Lance and Linda had gone boating down the lake, came out of First Narrows and spotted a fire on the east shore of Atlin Lake. They called it in as the south wind would bring it toward the town of Atlin. Forestry put it out. I like to think he saved the town. They spent 2 nights on Caribou Island camping in their boat near their friends Jim and Penny. Had a lot of fun, caught a couple of fish. Headed back to town on Sunday, got to the dock and tied up the boat and it was time for Lance to go. Instantly. The way he would have wanted it.

Robert (Rick) Newberry, Nov. 8, 1951 – July 21, 2019 Robert Eric (Rick) Newberry, age 67, of Ellsworth, Michigan passed away at his home on July 21, 2019. He was a kind and loving man and an inspirational environmentalist, adventurer and social worker. He left a substantial impact on the organizations and people he served during his long career. He became the Executive Director of the West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) in 1987, leading the effort to ban carcinogenic pesticides, passing a statewide policy to eliminate combined storm water/sewer overflows, establishing WMEAC as the leading advocate to protect Lake Michigan's remaining sand dunes, and beginning an innovative citizen-led Adopt-A-Stream program to protect major tributaries from erosion and sedimentation.

Rick was an avid adventurer, spending many summer vacations canoeing and exploring Arctic rivers and lakes. He inherited his love of the outdoors from his grandfather, who was particularly attracted to the pristine Alaskan wilderness, taking Rick and his brother Bill by float plane to several remote locations in Alaska for trout and salmon fishing. At a young age he and his younger brother Bill hiked the Appalachian Trail for 6 weeks. Through the 1980's he became one of the first of a vanguard of urban pioneers moving into abandoned central neighborhoods to restore and live in historic houses. His social work began later in life when he returned to school and earned a Master of Social Work, helping those suffering from substance abuse, PTSD and other trauma as a family counselor in the Grand Rapids area. In 2002, he was hired as the community counselor for the remote village of Atlin, in NW British Columbia, Canada, becoming an integral part of the close-knit community through his work with the diverse population, including the native Tlingit community, which grew into a much cherished relationship. Rick's love of music led him to help create and become the Producer for the Atlin Arts and Music Festival, now in its 16th year, bringing in musicians from across Canada and the U.S. In 2015, he returned with his wife to Michigan so they could be closer to family.

He is survived by his wife and partner Lynn Jancek and his stepchildren Brian Markley (Karen Offereins), of San Francisco, CA, and Jeff (Kelly) Markley, of Montague, MI, his brother Bill (Lisa) Newberry and his sister Linda Newberry of Traverse City, MI, two grandchildren, Miles and Leo Markley. A Memorial Celebration to honor his life and work will be held at J.P Hoffmaster State Park, Muskegon, MI at 3:00 pm on September 8, 2019. While we grieve his passing, we celebrate his vision, his compassion and his humor.

To the people of Atlin, THANK YOU to everyone for the beautiful banner that was sent, including all the wonderful sentiments and signatures from the community. It was very meaningful to me to receive this, and I will always cherish it. Rick would have felt honoured.

Atlin was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was a rare gift just to visit a place so spectacular, with its fresh mountain air and water, and jaw-droppingly gorgeous mountain ranges, but to be able to return to live, and work, volunteer, explore, make good friends, and really become engrained in the community, was a highlight of our lives. We were lucky to have gotten to know an amazing diversity of people from so many walks of life, and backgrounds, including the First Nation, who Rick and I both had the opportunity to work with and get to know on a deeper level.

We’ve shared our stories and adventures many times with family and friends here in Michigan who really understand our deep affection for Atlin and for the community, and what a truly special place it is.
